Alternatively, 2-4 ml of a liquid extract or 3-4 grams of powdered leaf in tablets or capsules taken twice daily can be substituted if desired.

Damiana has demonstrated mild hypoglycemic effects in animal studies. Patients with diabetes and hypoglycemia should use this plant with caution, and monitor blood sugar levels closely. Damiana has a traditional use as an abortive and is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) has a very quick calming effect on the nervous system and causes an uplifting, euphoric feeling. It is also a muscle relaxant and mild sedative. It is helps anxiety, tension, stress, irritability and insomnia. Kava stops the mind from racing, often a symptom of generalized anxiety disorder.

The usual dose is 750 mg twice daily. Do not exceed 4 capsules per day.

Kava Kava is a traditional Polynesian remedy, and while it has been used safely by Polynesians for centuries, now that it has become popular worldwide it has been linked to some cases of liver failure in people of other ethnic groups who have difficulty metabolizing it. Ask a health care professional before use if you have a history of liver problems, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are taking any medication. Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is most often used for insomnia, but it can also be taken in the daytime to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. This herb is often included in European formulas for heart palpitations, which often have anxiety as a component. It is taken in capsule form, 500 mg daily, or 20-30 drops of tincture, or as a fresh tea. Passionflower, though it helps bring on natural sleep, does not have the sedative effects of many prescription sleeping pills.

Pulsatilla is a homeopathic remedy said to be most suitable for shy, hypersensitive people who tend to feel warm rather than cold. Homeopathic practitioners recommend a 30C potency 2-4 times daily for relief of acute symptoms, and 30C or 6C 1-2 times daily for chronic use. Homeopathic remedies use miniscule concentrations of compounds to "nudge" the body into healing itself. They either help or they do not; there are no toxic side effects.

Scullcup (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a relaxing and gentle sedative for the central nervous system. It is very good for nervous tension and for nervous exhaustion plus neurological and neuromotor problems. The dose is 10-20 drops of fresh plant tincture or 1-2 dropperfuls of dried plant tincture. Skullcap can also be sleep inducing, but it is rarely habituating.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is commonly used for depression, but helps anxiety as well. Use a 300 mg extract 3 times daily. Quality varies widely between brands; it is best to buy a product standardized to contain 3-5% hyperforin and 0.3% hypericin. It works by increasing the level of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system such as serotonin and dopamine. Do not use this product if also taking prescription antidepressants.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been used since Greek and Roman times to promote sleep and relaxation. It can treat insomnia, anxiety, and stress related gastrointestinal upset. According to one theory, valerian affects the brain in a way similar to valium; while another theory holds that valerian contains GABA, a neurotransmitter which has a calming affect on the brain, or else influences the brain's natural production of GABA. Also, some reasearchers believe that valerian affects serotonin levels in a manner similar to anitdepressant drugs such as Prozac.

If using valerian to treat insomnia, take the herb 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed. It can be taken 2-4 times daily to help stress and anxiety. The recommended dose of tincture is 30-60 drops, or a capsule or tablet of 300-500 mg.

Some people feel groggy after taking valerian; if this occurs, lower the dose. Avoid hazardous activities while using valerian, and do not combine it with other sedatives, antidepressants or alcohol. Do not take valerian for more than 3 weeks, as it can be habituating.

Verbena (Verbena officinalis) is a relaxing nervous system tonic indicated for a wide range of nervous disorders including nervous exhaustion and stress. As a tincture, use 2-4 mls up to 4 times daily. Avoid use during pregnancy as this herb is a uterine stimulant.

Withania (Withania somnifera) is an ayurvedic herb sold under the name Ashwaghanda. It is a very good tonic herb that is especially helpful for debility and nervous exhaustion due to stress. It has steriodal, adaptogenic, sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also useful for panic attacks and phobic disorders such as agoraphobia. Use 1 tsp powder 3 times daily.

I can not say personally if it works for anxiety or depression but I can tell you this, I once had a Chinese Dentist that used it on me when I was having some multiple dental work done & wow did it ever relax me (well I guess I can say it works for anxiety, DOH) I still needed a few shots to numb my mouth but not as many & I was a lot more relaxed. I have faith in it. I sure would rather have acupuncture done than take a bunch a pills. I think it was Paula Abduel that spranged her ankle very badly after practicing for a show & it was so bad they were going to cancel her tour (back in the day) & she went to an acupuncturist one time & whatever he did he told her to get up & walk & she did & the pain was completely gone. Ok, I am babbling. Insurance wont cover it & you will have to call one in your area to find out cost but I don't think it's extremely out of line like shrinks charge here or what most of these medications cost here. Best treatment for anxiety and panic disorder?

What is the best treatment for anxiety and panic disorder?
I am taking a beta blocker 25mg and the Dr gave me Xanax too. But everyone keeps telling me how wrong Xanax is and so addictive. But I keep having the panic attacks. Is anyone else taking an SSRI or something else for the anxiety and panic attack treatment? What are alternatives other than Xanax?
Anyone taking it combined with a beta blocker?

I have the same disorder. I take Valium which is much longer acting than Xanax. I had a terrible time trying to get off of Xanax. It is very short acting and very addictive. Also, you should get into cognitive therapy. I took an anxiety management program and it helped me a lot. When i feel a panic attack coming on i now have some mental tools to fight it off and most of the time i am able to do that. Good luck!!

I wasn´t paranoid, I just felt incapable of protecting myself from things that were happening to me or coming at me, like cars, people... even stepping off a curb. There was no barrier or filter to protect me from life. I felt defenseless... unbalanced. I had no sense of a physical center."

Disturbed by her worsening condition, Marcie started psychotherapy. Her fears and phobias were the main theme of her sessions. When asked if her symptoms had improved, she laughingly replied, "No, I just live with them better. Sometimes I can focus on them and control them. At other times I feel out of control."

Like many a desperate phobic, Marcie went to several physicians in hopes of finding a better answer. One after another, they examined her and left her with the same diagnosis: "Nothing is wrong, it´s all in your head."

Blanche´s case:

"One day as I was about to leave my home to run a few errands, I suddenly became rooted to the floor, just as I was about to open the front door. I was physically unable to walk through that door. From that day until four weeks ago, I was unable to leave my home unless my daughter accompanied me and I had a cane to help support me. In order to move around in the house I had to hold on to furniture.

I felt dizzy, dyscoordinated, and off-balance. Although I tried several drugs, my agoraphobia and an acute fear of falling persisted. I became totally dependent upon my children to help me whenever I needed to go to the store or the doctor. Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, my phobias disappeared."

Alan´s case:

Alan went to his doctor following the sudden, seemingly unexplainable onset of two phobias; a fear of small, enclosed spaces, and a fear of death.

It all began when Alan, who had never suffered from any phobias or panic attacks, went into the hospital for a minor hernia operation. After receiving two pre-op injections to anesthetize him and make him drowsy, Alan was moved from his hospital bed to a stretcher. A hospital attendant then pulled up the metal bars on the sides of the stretcher and proceeded to wheel Alan out of his room and down the hall to an elevator bank.

Only able to look up at the ceiling, Alan began to find the perspective from the stretcher mildly disorienting. The elevator took him down to the basement of the hospital, and as he was being wheeled toward the pre-op room, the perspective from the stretcher, and the bars on either side of him, made Alan feel increasingly uncomfortable. He was beginning to feel trapped.

Once inside the small, windowless pre-op room, things got much worse. The room took on a surreal quality, and Alan began to feel seriously disoriented and dizzy. Within moments, he was panic stricken. He recalled:

"It was like something out of Night Gallery. Everything was so unreal. I felt like I wasn´t really there... like I was witnessing everything in the third person. Suddenly I wanted to get up and run out of the room. I needed to get to a window or door... get some fresh air... see  some  sunlight. But I was stuck on the stretcher with an intravenous in my arm, trapped inside those bars, thinking that any minute I was going to start screaming like a madman... it was like I was going crazy or something."

Shortly thereafter the injections must have taken full effect, for Alan barely remembers the surgery. Once he was fully conscious again in the post-op ward, his fears returned. But this time he was no longer scared of being trapped in a stretcher... he was thinking what it would be like to be trapped in a coffin, six feet underground, for all eternity. For Alan, a coffin represented the ultimate claustrophobic nightmare, the smallest enclosed space in which a human being could fit.

Alan was released from the hospital within a few days. But for a full week he could think of little else but dying and being put into "the box." He thought about being cremated, but that seemed worse. He tried to watch TV to distract his mind, but every program seemed to have someone being killed or someone dying of a disease. All this did was make him think of' "the box." Clearly, Alan´s phobia was beginning to take on a life of its own.

Soon Alan´s small studio apartment had taken on a boxlike quality, especially at night when he couldn´t see anything outside his windows. Furthermore, the thought of having hundreds of people living on top of him in his building, he lived on the second floor, was becoming unbearable. He panicked several times and ran to the window for air. But in his condition leaving the apartment was impossible, especially since the last thing he wanted was to wind up back in the hospital.

As soon as Alan was well enough to go out, his girlfriend convinced him to "lighten up" and go with her to the movies. Once inside the theater, he immediately felt uncomfortable. As soon as someone sat near him he would get up and change his seat. Ultimately, he found he could only be comfortable sitting in an aisle seat near the exit.

Sensing that Alan had become "a different person" since the surgery, his girlfriend suggested he see a psychiatrist. Instead, Alan called his regular physician and told him everything that had happened since he received the two injections in the hospital. His doctor told him, "You don´t need a psychiatrist, you need a priest."

Needless to say, this made Alan much worse. He began to be suspicious of everybody, including his girlfriend and his doctor. He felt like a victim in a crazy conspiracy, that he "really didn´t know any of these people at all."

Alan´s acute claustrophobia dissolved almost immediately when he started the right treatment with the right doctor. He wrote:

"It's been almost six months since I've had any serious attacks. I know the medication has helped, but knowing why this happened to me has also helped. I still think about death a lot, not as much as I used to, but more than I should. I've decided to see a therapist here."

Although the sudden appearance, disappearance, and intensification of phobic symptoms has always been noticed by phobics and clinicians, no one has ever offered an acceptable explanation, and for one very good reason. All previous phobic theories have overlooked the vital importance of the inner-ear system. As a result, they have necessarily overlooked the importance of various factors that can destabilize that system.

Agoraphobia And The Misconception Of A "safe Zone"

Agoraphobia anxiety disorder is the name used to to describe individuals with serious or recurring anxiety attacks.  A lot of people will suffer from a feeling of dread and panic some point in their lifetime, particularly when placed in hazardous or violent cases.  When these worries appear to feature no apparent trigger, they turn into what is known as panic disorder, though they normally go hand in hand with times of severe emotional stress in our lives (such as significant deadlines in the office or school).

When a person seems to get recurrent anxiety attacks, generally around every week or even more, and with out a specific reason or traumatic stimulus, the individual might have what is called an anxiety disorder.  They will start to fear that they will have a panic attack at any time.  They think that one of the familiar indicators (dizziness, rushing heart, trembling, sweating, worries of going into cardiac arrest or death) may become too much for them and turn into a very strong anxiety attack.

As a result, a few might start to keep away from locations where they feel they can be unable to break free from should a panic attack develops.  They will often stay away from packed areas, driving a car in hefty traffic, public transit, tiny or claustrophobic spaces, and in severe situations even steeping out of the home.  It's this that we call an agoraphobia panic condition.

One time, many years back, I got in a accident and destroyed my car while going down a rather busy street in Peoria, Arizona.  I recall the screeching brakes and the sound of crunching metal upon impact.  Thankfully, I was physically alright.  However in the 2 or 3 weeks that followed, I began to feel apprehensive when it was time to go to work, or by the end of the day when I would head back home.  One day, I found myself at lunch one day with some close friends and out of nowhere my palms begun feeling sweaty, and I began breathing fairly fast.  Shortly after that my arms began to become numb as if they were asleep and I was feeling lightheaded.  My best friend, realizing something was going on, drove me to the clinic.  All of the medical tests showed I was totally normal.

I had something similar a few weeks down the road and began to wonder if the medical doctors at the medical center somehow forgot something when they were evaluating me.  I started to feel uneasy going to the spots where my attacks had happened.  I had a couple more panic attacks and began to be concerned when the next one would take place.  Suppose it had been on the freeway?  Suppose my car spun out of control and smashed into someone?  I before long could barely force myself to leave the house even for essential things such as purchasing groceries.  I had a full-blown agoraphobia panic disorder.

I thought I have to be going mad!  I was frozen in my life and I was losing contact with friends because I was so terrified of going out and maybe getting agoraphobia panic attacks.  I was fearful that when I left my home, I would go through a panic attack.  And if I went through an anxiety attack, I may be left susceptible and fully at the mercy of the situation I would be in and the people that could be around.

I believed that I might be in less danger at home where I did not need to worry about getting agoraphobia panic attacks for the duration of risky circumstances like driving or experience the humiliation of going insane" around others.

What I have consequently come to recognize, is that my life was collapsing in on me and becoming smaller and smaller due to the notion that there is a "protected zone."  In other words, I believed that I could be secure at home and for some reason walking outside, I would in some way be less secure.  I now understand that there actually isn't a safe zone.  Sitting down in my house is equally as safe as taking walks on a crowded street.  I have suffered from anxiety attacks in various scenarios and in numerous different places, and I am still doing fine.  If left to themselves every one of my agoraphobia panic attacks would've passed on its own with or without professional treatment.  I might have even had one out in the woods and though it might be scary, it would inevitably go away and I would be completely fine-with no medicine, no psychiatrists, and no protection anywhere to be seen.

Think about you?  Despite your most overwhelming agoraphobia panic attacks, where you were certainly confident you were about to die, aren't you still here living?

Sure, it is recommended find medical care if you're developing a severe physical trouble like an asthma attack, diabetic issues, or some other substantial physical condition, but no doctor around will inform you that you would be more secure in your house than in the supermarket or shopping mall.  There is no safe zone.

Trust me I've been there and I've had to handle all the worry and anxiety.  Once you can comprehend this concept, and believe it on a instinctual level, it will transform how you see the world and it will give back your freedom.  This small principle was completely life-altering as soon as I felt it deep down inside.  It started the ball rolling that helped me get my agoraphobia panic attacks in order by changing how I looked at the world.

I believe you can do this.  Why?  Because I got over it, myself.  Nowadays, I'm a firm believer in the concept that what one individual can do, another person can do.  The path may well not often be the exact same, however, you can have control of your life as well.
