I've come clean about my depression...now what?

I've been suffering from symptoms of depression for the past three years, but I've pretty much kept it to myself. Until today.

The only problem is, now that my parents know, they are kind of freaking out. My dad basically told me that, if they send me to a doctor, they'll pretend that they understand, prescribe me some meds, and tell me to 'come back in two weeks.' That the only thing they'll care about is money.

That may be true, but I don't care. I just want these feelings to stop. And my dad's no help. He knows nothing about it, and he keeps saying that things will get better if I 'look to God.'

If my own parents are reluctant to get me help, what other choices do I have? I don't expect any miraculous overnight solution, but I do know that if I don't do anything, nothing will change. What should I do? -___-

You need to go to a psychologist or other doctor if you have a lot of depression symptoms. Your psychologist can talk to your parents if you want him or her to. He or she can explain to your parents that it is a mental problem and that they just want to help you. Try to explain to your parents that you really want help and you will pray about it but that you also think a professional would help. I'm sure they want the best for you, even if they don't understand fully what you are going through.

1. Make time for you. Without the kids. Its very important to maintain your own sense of self and sometimes this can be difficult to do when you never actually have any 'you' time. Hitting the local gym is not always necessary. Just taking a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood, taking the steps instead of an elevator, or parking farther away can help a busy mom squeeze in exercise during the day.

5. Eat Healthy. There are foods that promote calmness as well as foods that increase stress levels. Busy moms should ask themselves if they are consuming too much sugar or caffeine, and if they are getting enough protein. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and staying away from refined and processed foods also help. Healthy eating is very important for any busy mom. Taking a look at your eating habits and making the necessary changes can result in increased optimal health.

6. Call a friend. It is always important to have at least one relationship where Mom can just vent and know that a listening ear and unconditional acceptance will be given.

7. Calm Your Thoughts. Our thoughts create the lives we live so be aware of what you think about. Abraham said 'Worrying is using your imagination to create something you don't want'. What are you creating with your worries?

8. Don't Forget To Laugh. Laughing is good for you and with children around there are usually lots of things to laugh at -from the things they say to the things you find yourself saying back to them. My favourite stress relief tip of all. Take a relaxing bath. Add music, candles and a glass of your favourite drink: beer, tea, hotchocolate, wine or even champagne. Close the door and forget about everything else for an hour or so. This helps to increase levels of calmness and the calmer we feel, the less likely we are to get stressed out or depressed. 2. Read a Book

Reading is one of the simplest forms of relaxation for mind and body? Picking up a book and allowing our minds to add colour to the black and white pages, can relieve the stresses and strains that modern life places upon us. There are many other benefits too! There is a wealth of choice in ‘self improvement’, ’motivation’, or ‘educational’ books which may provide answers to questions we have always asked ourselves, or at least guide us in the right direction! There is no better place to start than your local Library, where you will find expert help and guidance from the staff. Aside from the plentiful stock of titles on offer, there are Quick Reads which are ready made for people who just don’t have time to curl up with a good book but do have a few moments at lunch time to get lost with a sandwich.

3. Excercise Regularly.

Regular excercise has been shown to reduce stress so get moving. Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, aerobic dancing, walking or any of dozens of other activities can help your heart. They all cause you to feel warm, perspire and breathe heavily without being out of breath and without feeling any burning sensation in your muscles. Whether it is a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all exercise adds up to a healthier heart.

4. Laugh. Keep your sense of humor. Laugh a lot.

Brighten your mood and improve your sense of

well-being. Facilitate positive social interaction.

The first way to use candles in relaxation and stress relief is a very simple, yet utterly effective method. Simply take a deep breath, and stare at the flame of the candle while it is lit. Focus in on the area at the base of the wick where the flames color is blue. Watch how the colors subtly change as you stare into the flame. Take deep, calming breaths while relaxing and simply focusing on the candle flame. It helps if this is done in a darkened room, however the exercise is effective even while in a brightly lit space. Of course, the act of simply having lit candles is very relaxing in itself. Whether simply around the house, in the bathtub, or during intimate moments, candles can enhance and bring peacefulness to our hectic lives. So the next time you are looking for a quick way to de-stress and ground yourself, look no further than the wax and wick!

6. Schedule a massage or pedicure once a month.

Get a manicure and pedicure. Science has proven that there are pressure points located on our feet and hands. These areas can cause additional pain during stressful times. A nice manicure and pedicure will help soothe those pressure points.

Plain and simple, the effects of stress on the body can be extremely detrimental. When a muscle is stressed, circulation is reduced and both oxygen and nutrients are blocked. Massage is a terrific way to loosen up the muscles, increase the circulation and bring oxygen and nutrients back to the area. It may also release stored toxins, so it's important to flush out your system by drinking water after a session.

7. Set realistic, obtainable goals and meet them.

One of the major causes of stress and depression is a feeling of going nowhere, a feeling that life is just passing by.

Make a long story short, I am 6 months into a Human Rights case against my employer, but they are saying they must know what Medication I take (because of the type of meds they are), It take for ADHD, Anxiety, and Nocturnal Anxiety/Panic Attacks. They said as a condition of my employment, I must sign a consent of release of information, so they can speak to my psychiatrist. I got it last Wed. Im not singing. I called the Human Rights Comission, to which they told me Not to sign anything. Labour Board, (who dealt with my labour board case against my employer last year) said I have to go into Freedom of Information and Priacy Act. Any suggestions what I can do when I tell them I'm not signing. No I don't have a lawyer., I can't afford 1, and legal aid wont accept me. I'm waiting for the next step in my Human Rights case, and my Psychiatrist told me to not say a word. I know they can'tfire me for not giving consent, but Im stuck, I live in Ont. Can.

Also I looked it up on a couple websites, and the only case I saw that an employee had to give their employer sych critical info is when the person was an eplileptic.

Everytime I go to leave my dog goes nuts. He barks and cries and if he'll never see me again. I've tried giving treats to distract him but this doesn't work. I've tried locking him in another room so he doesn't see me going but he seems to know when i'm leaving. I've evn tried putting my bag and coat outside so he doesn't see me getting dressed and ready to leave. I can go to the door to get the mail or take out the garbage and this has no reaction but he seems to know that when i'm going to the door to leave him behind. any tips from anyone.

The mere mention of a "test" seems to be a four-letter word to the mind of many students. Not only do they become anxious, but also there are a few changes in their behavior on an involuntary basis. Remember the high school teacher that would proudly walk in and announce a daily "pop quiz". It is almost like the world stood still, the sound echoed and slowed to half the normal speed. Almost like a warp zone. That is because test taking illicit's fear in the human species. They are terribly afraid of failure or looking dumb, so they work themselves in to a panic attack without even realizing what is happening. There are ways to calm your mind and body when you are about to take a test. Following the below listed tips can give you a successful strategy for passing that test!

Study Guide To The Rescue

If you have a chance to purchase a study guide, do not let your shirt tale hit your bottom before you do so. No matter how much it cost it is the key to the test. When someone has built a study guide, they have reviewed the material backwards and forwards in order to determine what material is the most important. The study guide does most of the work for you, because it is like having your own personal researcher that did the footwork for you! If you have trouble in affording the reference material, make sure that you ask mom and dad or get a group in the class together allowing everyone to split the cost.

Psychological Helpers

There are a few tips and tricks that counselors want to charge you for sharing. Here they are so use them and enjoy this free gift to you! If you are nervous, and most people are with a test, you can use mental imagery to calm your body. When you are sitting in your chair take you index and ring finger and hold them together at the very tip of the fingers. Now close your eyes and take a deep breath, hold it a few seconds, now slowly release it. Practice this as we go through! Do these three times all while keeping your fingers together. Now imagine that the stress, tension and anxiety are draining from the top of your head to the very tips of your fingers that is holding it in your body. As the anxiety, fear and stress moves down your arm slowly release your fingers allowing the anxiety to drain from your body. If you really concentrate and use imagery it really feels like water is dripping from your fingertips! Pretty cool, huh!

Taking Your Time

Do not rush through the test, take your time and allow your mind the ability to catch up. If you are in a hurry or so nervous that you are half way reading the questions you will most likely read it wrong. Reading a small part of the question or answer can prove a red mark across your test. Hurrying through anything will cause you to make mistakes and unfortunately have caused many students to fail a class. Most professors give you ample time to complete the test and do not worry as if you are diligently working and the time is up, most will give you time to complete the entire test. Test anxiety has become a hot topic in the last twenty years as some very famous individuals have suffered.

The Old 1-2-3 That Mom Always Preached

The older that we get the less "dumb and out dated" that mom really becomes. You know in younger years all of those test tips that mom gave always went in one ear and out the other. Now we find ourselves struggling to remember them, because we are anxious about an upcoming test. Here they are again:

* Go to bed at a decent time - one of the leading indicators of poor grades is sleep deprivation. Did you know that sleep deprivation can cause you to be sick, miss an important pass or hit in sports, and even lead to accidents?

* No empty stomachs - Making sure that you have had something to eat before a test can actually calm your nerves. One of the reactions of the body to stress and anxiety is the release of acids that can upset one's stomach. Have something of substance in your stomach to soak up the nervous juices!

* Be prepared - Do not wait until the night before the exam to try and cram the information. Chances are that you will not do yourself any good and will only frustrate yourself. You do not need any more frustration so prepare ahead of time. Remember look for a study guide!

* Clear your mind - Do not worry with the electric bill, neighbors barking dog, or how to ask him/her out on a date when you are about to take a test. Remember to use your newfound mental imagery to clear your mind and take your test in the Caribbean! Hey the mind is a wonderful and miraculous tool.

What are a few tips on dealing with anxiety?

I won't lie; i'm awfully intelegent for my age, but when I take tests I completly forget everything I know about the subject. Thing is, I'm a hard-worker and I study so much, hence, I can't remember anything.

Take slow breaths through your nose and exhale through your mouth several times and let your shoulders drop. do this as often as needed. (this regulates your heart rate)

The next step regulates your mind:

Then use your thumb and on the same hand touch your nail tip into the back of each finger and slowly count all ten.
Make sure you can feel your finger nail slightly press into the back of each finger.

Honestly, I was taught to do this when I felt an anxiety attach was starting. He makes your mind re-focus. I count out loud (well whisper it) one, two, three, etc. as I touch each finger.
You are focusing on the "touch" of your nail into the back of each finger while your mind is counting.

Somehow it works.....sounds so simple too but try it and see for yourself, oh and don't fight it or try to figure anything out while you're doing it.....
