I am 13 and I have been reading up on anxiety disorder and I think I may be having the beginning stages of the disordor. Is there any kind of natural pill or substance I can take to ruduce anxiety before I go resort to therapy and meds and what not? I have met all the symptoms of anxiety and I want to hit the nail on the head before it gets to late.

Cbt as Treatment for Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, known by many as manic depression, is a mental illness caused by a combination of factors, including neurological, biological, emotional, and environmental factors. It is most commonly described as mood cycling or mood swings, in which the patient cycles through moods of depression, mania, and normal behavior.
There are many treatment options for bipolar disorder. The most common treatment for bipolar disorder includes a combination of medication and therapy. However, some patients are not candidates for medication treatment. Patients that have a history of drug abuse, for instance, should in most cases not be placed on medication for bipolar disorder, as the risk for abuse is too great. Additionally, patients may not have a case of bipolar disorder severe enough to warrant medication. Other patients may choose to avoid the route of medication until it becomes absolutely necessary.
In response to these special cases in which medication treatment is not a viable option for bipolar disorder, that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, was developed. CBT is a type of therapy that assists patients in recognizing triggers and causes for their manic and depressive states. The patient can then learn techniques to avoid these triggers, and cope with symptoms during episodes. Seventy percent of bipolar disorder type one patients that undergo CBT experience one or fewer episodes within four years of starting the CBT treatment.
There are two main goals that are met by using CBT as treatment for bipolar disorder. The first goal is to recognize manic episodes before they become uncontrollable, and consciously change how they react to the episode. The second goal is to learn techniques, reactions, thoughts, and behaviors that can help to offset depression. These goals are realized through various techniques and activities prescribed by the therapist. With CBT, the treatment of bipolar disorder rests with the patient, who is given homework in the form of exercises and reading, which helps them to understand their condition and learn methods to cope with it.
The first step to successful treatment of bipolar disorder through CBT is to develop a treatment contract with the patient. This is a treatment plan that the patient agrees to follow, and also involves the patient's promise to complete all homework assignments and take any prescribed medication as directed. Because the success of CBT depends largely on the patient's responsibility and desire to cope with bipolar disorder, this is an important first step to successful treatment.
The second step to successful treatment of bipolar disorder through CBT is to monitor and grade moods. This is done with various worksheets that the therapist gives the patient. The patient may record their mood for the day, how many hours they have slept, their level of anxiety, and their level of irritability. Those with type two bipolar disorder may need to record their mood two or more times per day, as their moods cycle more often.
Understanding the pattern to mood cycling can help the patient then undergo the next step to CBT treatment for bipolar disorder. This step of CBT for treatment of bipolar disorder requires the patient to do homework in the form of worksheets and reading that will help the patient to understand how their thoughts effect their emotions. By understanding these things, the patient will be able to then practice altering their thoughts in a rational way to make emotions more rational as well, decreasing the number and severity of depressive and manic episodes.
The next step to CBT treatment for bipolar disorder is to learn how to recognize triggers. Triggers are the thoughts, emotions, situations, times of year, events, or environments that set off a depressive or manic episode. By learning how to understand and recognize their triggers, the patient can then learn to avoid the triggers entirely, thereby decreasing the number and severity of depressive and manic episodes.
Overall, CBT is a viable and quite successful treatment for bipolar disorder, and can be a healthy alternative to medication in some cases. If you feel you may be a candidate for CBT, you should contact your doctor or therapist to discuss this and other bipolar disorder treatment options.

Yes, it sounds like you very well have OCD, there are treatments for it medication like e selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as paroxetine, sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram, and fluvoxamine as well as the tricyclic antidepressants, in particular clomipramine. SSRIs prevent excess serotonin from being pumped back into the original neuron that released it. My girlfriend suffers from anxiety what should I do?
My girlfriend and I have been together for over a year now, but she was recently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Her symptoms include: constant crying, paranoia, dreading life. Crying, and constant rituals. What annoys me the most is that she makes me do the rituals with her. its been 3 months and I don't think I can deal with her anxiety problem anymore. Should I leave her or continue on in the hopes that things will be back to almost normal?

Medicine, psychiatry, and dualism:
In the past, psychiatric diagnoses have been regarded as ‘mental' in nature, in contrast to the ‘physical' nature of medical diagnoses. This distinction reflects the absence of gross pathology in most psychiatric disorders, and the fact that these conditions usually present with disturbed mental states or behaviour rather than physical symptoms.
Underling this division of illnesses into physical and mental, is the assumption that a parallel distinction can be made in healthy people ‘body-mind dualism'. This has and continues to exert a profound influence on medical thinking.
Co-morbidity means the occurrence of two disorders. The term has been extended to describe the co-occurrence of prominent mental symptoms and bodily pathology since these patients are usually given a psychiatric and a physical diagnosis. In particular neither of these diagnoses may lead to effective treatment because a focus on either may lead to neglect of the other. An example is the widespread neglect of depression in patients with medical disease.
Somatization some patients have somatic symptoms but no evidence of bodily pathology. It is then unclear whether their illness should be categorized as medical or as psychiatric. In the past these conditions were generally given the medical diagnosis of functional illness (function is abnormal but there is no pathology). Now these conditions are usually given the psychiatric diagnosis of somatoform disorder. Such patients receive both a medical diagnosis (organic disorder) and a psychiatric diagnosis such as somatoform disorder (functional disorder) and the resulting confusion and controversy is well illustrated by literature about the condition called chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CSF) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).
Modern (integrated) approach:
New scientific knowledge, such as the demonstration of the neural basis to many psychiatric disorders (esp. with the functional imaging and genetics) has shown that crude dualistic thinking is untenable. Evidence for the effect of psychiatric disorder on the outcome of medical conditions such as MI (Frasure-Smith et al 1993) has pointed to the same conclusions.
Mind and brain are now increasingly regarded as two side of the same coin. This shift implies that psychiatric disorders are no more distinct from medical conditions than the higher nervous system is from the rest of the body. As Eisenberg (i986a) put it, psychiatry has to become less ‘brain-less' and medicine less ‘mind-less'. Correspondingly medical and psychiatric care need to be more integrated.
The ‘biopsychosocial' approach which can be further divided into predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating causes can go a long way to bridge the gap and most importantly, serve the patient.
Anxiety Disorders
Abnormal state in which the most striking features are mental and physical symptoms of anxiety, occurring in the absence of organic brain disease or another psychiatric disorder
Although all the symptoms can occur in any of the anxiety disorders, there is a characteristic pattern in each disorder which will be described later. The disorders share many features of their clinical picture and aetiology but there are also differences:
In generalized anxiety disorders, anxiety is continuous-though it may fluctuate in intensity.
In phobic anxiety disorders, anxiety is intermittent, arising in particular circumstances.
In panic disorder, anxiety is intermittent but its occurrence is unrelated to any particular circumstances.
The Classification of anxiety disorders (ICD-10):
Phobic anxiety disorder:
Agoraphobia (with or without panic disorder)
Social phobia
Specific phobias
Panic Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder
Mixed anxiety and depression disorder.
(OCD in ICD-10 is diagnosed separately, in the DSM-IV it is under anxiety disorder)
Generalized Anxiety Disorders
Clinical Picture
The symptoms in GAD are persistent and are not restricted to, or markedly increased in, any particular set of circumstances. All the previously mentioned symptoms can occur, but there are characteristic pattern comprised of the following features:
Worry and apprehension that are more prolonged than those oh healthy people. The worries are widespread and not focused on a specific issue as they are in panic disorder (on having a panic attack) or social phobia (on being embarrassed). The person feels that theses widespread worries are difficult to control.
Psychological arousal which may be evident as irritability, poor concentration, and sensitivity to noise. Some patients complain of poor memory.
Autonomic overactivity experienced most often as sweating, palpitation, dry mouth, epigastric discomfort, and dizziness. Some patients ask for help without mentioning the psychological symptoms of anxiety.
Muscle tension often as restlessness, trembling, inability to relax, headache (usually bilateral and frontal or occipital) and aching in shoulders and neck.
Hyperventilation which may lead to dizziness, tingling in the extremities and, paradoxically, a feeling of shortness of breath.
Sleep disturbance include difficulty falling asleep and persistent worrying thoughts. Sleep often intermittent, unrefreshing, and accompanied by unpleasant dreams. Some patients have night terrors in which they awake suddenly feeling intensely anxious. Early morning waking is not a feature of GAD and its presence strongly suggests a depressive disorder.
Other features include tiredness, depressive symptoms, obsession symptoms, and depersonalization. These never prominent. If so, another diagnosis should be considered.
Clinical signs
The face appears strained, the brow is furrowed, and the posture is tense. The person is restless and may tremble. The skin is pale and sweating is common, especially from the hand, feet, and axillae. Readiness to tears, which may at first suggest depression, reflects the generally apprehensive state.
Note that there is no clear dividing line between GAD and normal anxiety. They differ both in the extent of the symptoms and the duration (in DSM-IV 6 month, in the ICD-10, more flexible; symptoms should have been present on most days at least several weeks at a time, and usually several month'
Comorbidity is common:

Substance misuse
Physical illness e.g. Thyroid disease, hypoglycaemia.
Epidemiology:
Life time rate 4-5 %
Incidence 3% per year
Aetiology:
Biopsychosocial, Interaction between stressful events, genetic causes, early experiences, personality and social circumstances.
Areas of the brain most likely involved: the amyygdala, the hippocampus.
Na, 5-HT, GABA and recently CRH (corticotrophin releasing hormone)
Prognosis
Duration is important and the longer the GAD the worse the prognosis.
Co-morbidity (physical or psychiatric) worsen the prognosis
However GAD has a very good prognosis if treated.
Treatment
Counselling: involving clear plan, explanation, reassurance, problem solving, advice about life style (e.g caffeine)
Medications:in the short term, long acting BDZ (not more than 3 weeks, risk of addiction). For the long term, antidepressant are effective, SSRI first line and Venelafaxine is 2nd line.
Phobic anxiety disorders:
1. Specific phobia
Same core symptoms as GAD, but occur in particular circumstances, there may be anticipatory anxiety. Grouped into:
The following specific phobias will be described briefly:
Phobia of dental treatment: 5% of adults.
Phobia of flying: CBT or behavioural treatment (desensitization is effective)
Blood injury phobia: unique in that fainting does occur, tensing works effectively with behavioural treatment.
Phobia of choking: exaggerated gag reflex (usually past experience). Desensitization works.
Phobia of illness: though recognised as irrational and not resisted.
Epidemiology:
Incidence 4.4 %per year
Prevalence 4% in M and 13 % in F.
Most start in childhood.
2. Social phobia
Clinical picture:
Inappropriate anxiety, experienced in social situations in which the person feels observed by others and could be criticized by them. Avoidance and escape are characteristic. Can be generalised or specific (e.g. public speaking). Associated with depression and substance misuse
Two discrete social phobias require separate consideration:
Phobia of excretion: patient become anxious and unable to pass urine in public lavatories, or fear of incontinence, patient arrange their lives so as never to be far from a lavatory.
Phobia of vomiting: fear of vomiting in public places, feeling of nausea and anxiety.
Treatment with psychotherapy or medication (SSRIs and ? blockers).
3. Agoraphobia
Patients are anxious when they are away from home, in crowds, or in situations that they cannot leave easily. They avoid these situations, feel anxious when anticipating them, and experience other symptoms. Especially panic attacks and fear of fainting and loss of control. Anticipatory anxiety is common, also depression, depersonalization and substance misuse.
Epidemiology:
Life time prevalence 6-10% F>M
Usually begins in mid twenties (later than social or specific phobias)
Panic disorder:
Clinical features:
Symptoms (at least 4) , more than 4 attacks in 4 weeks, or one attack followed by 4 weeks of persistent fear. Symptoms are:
Fear of going crazy or doing something uncontrolled.
Epidemiology:
Life-time prevalence is 5%.
Herdedibility is high, up to 30-40%.
F>M 2:1
Amongst men mortality is higher from cardiovascular disorders.
Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder
This diagnosis is reserved when the diagnostic criteria for depression or GAD are not severe enough to meet the criteria. Mild illness
Influence of culture on anxiety disorders:
In several cultures the presenting symptoms of anxiety disorders are more often somatic than psychological. e.g. Koro ,occur amongst Chinese men , there are episodes of acute anxiety, lasting 30 min to a day or two, the person complain of palpitation, sweating, pericardia discomfort and trembling. At the same time he is convinced that the penis will retract into the abdomen and that when this process is complete he will die.

Mesothelioma Support Groups-How to Find the Best One For You
When you are faced with a diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer there are many resources are available for you and your family to benefit. You can seek for support from family and friends, as well as from health professionals, support groups, or your place of worship. Asking for support is one way you can feel in control of what's going on in your life, your need for support is not a sign of weakness.
You feel lonely and abandoned. You may loose your desire to continue living . If your are not getting the much needed support from your friends and family then find others who can support you. There are probably others in your community who need your companionship as much as you need theirs. The mutual support of others with cancer might also be a source of comfort.You will probably need the support of different support groups to help you cope with the diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer.
What are different types of support groups?
There are different types and formats for support groups, there are individual, group counseling and support groups. Some support groups are formal and focus on learning about cancer or dealing with feelings. There are also less formal and more social groups. Some groups consist mainly of people with cancers or only caregivers, while others include spouses, family members, or friends. Other groups focus on certain types of cancer or stages of disease like mesothelioma cancer. Some groups have their meetings over a number of weeks while some others meet over a longer period of time. Some programs no longer accept new members while other groups are still open to new members.
Health professionals (a social worker, nurse, or other licensed professional), trained facilitators, or a group member may lead the group. The leader of a group should have some type of training before taking charge of a support group.
Telephone counseling groups
For those who cannot attend meetings or appointments, counseling over the telephone is offered by organizations such as Cancer Care, Inc. Some people may find online support groups helpful because they like the privacy. It may be comforting to chat with other people facing situations much like yours. But keep in mind that chat rooms and message boards are not the best source of cancer information, especially if they are not monitored by trained professionals or experts.
No matter what kind of group it is, everyone taking part should feel comfortable in the group and with the facilitator. If you have any fears or uncertainties before entering a group, try to discuss them with the group's facilitator ahead of time.
Along with support programs, other means of support may be available in your community such as:
•Home health nursing services
•Social services, such as counseling and financial aid
•Nutrition services that provide meals or allow you to talk with a registered dietitian
•Rehabilitation services provided by physical and occupational therapists
•Spiritual services from chaplains or religious figures in the community
Support in any form allows you to talk about your feelings and develop skills to cope with the changes taking place in your life. Some studies have found that people who go to support groups have an improved quality of life, including better sleep and appetite.
Self-help groups
Self-help groups are most often run by non-professionals who have been through the same kinds of problems or crises. The people in these groups can relate to your experience firsthand and often have treatment-related tips and advice that may help you. For example, they may offer a home remedy that helped with their nausea, or know where to get the best prices on wigs and turbans. If their family members are not in the group, patients are free to express exactly how they feel. Family members can also benefit from sharing their feelings, fears, and anxieties with other families affected by mesothelioma cancer.
Self-help groups also give people recovering or who are long term survivors of mesothelioma cancer help others with the cancer. With some training, many people with cancer have found that helping others makes them feel better about themselves. They may go on to become group counselors or facilitators.
Choosing when to take part in a support group is important. Some find it difficult to join a support group when they are first diagnosed. The stories that other patients may share, after months or even years of treatment, can be overwhelming and upsetting. If you try a group and it doesn't feel right, you may want to try again later or try another group.
Religion
Religion can be a source of strength for some people. Some find new faith when diagnosed with cancer. Others find their cancer experience strengthens their existing faith or their faith gives them newfound strength and hope. Others who have never had strong religious beliefs may not feel an urge to turn to religion at this time. A minister, rabbi, other leader of your faith, or a trained pastoral counselor can help you find spiritual support. Some members of the clergy are specially trained to minister to people with cancer and their families. Some hospitals also have chaplains available.
Ask your health care team about the resources available at your hospital. You can also contact your American Cancer Society to find out about sources of support that are available in your community.

Many people don’t like the idea of group therapy, feeling like it some how invades their privacy. Not group therapy... maybe a christian based group of therapists that volunteer? Something like that.
She frequently catches things on the media/internet and worries about them excessively... applies them to herself with all these "what if" questions. Most recently MJ's death. Before that, buying thorough bred dogs rather than adopting (since she bought one).
She doesn't have the funds and claims her insurance doesn't pay for therapy... how can she get help? She lives near San Fran.
omg. do not try to cure this with diet and sleeping in a tent. She isn't having anxiety because she isn't eating right or because she sleeps inside. Good grief. That person has anxiety, too, clearly.
I do agree that nature is very soothing and helps alot. If she could spend time hiking or something like that, birdwatching, fishing, it would help some.
But it isn't something she is DOING or NOT doing that makes her feel anxious. It's probably brain chemistry.
She needs to tell her physician and see if he or she can prescribe something for the anxiety.
If she wants therapy, maybe she would qualify for Medical, the state insurance. She could look into that. Probably the insurance person at her regular doctor's office could tell her where to start on that.

I have been struggling with anxiety for years, and this year was finally diagnosed as having Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia. I understand what your boyfriend is going through, it's a terrible disorder. I tried different medications (various antidepressants like Zoloft, Cymbalta, and Lexapro, as well as benzodiazepines like Xanax and Xanax XR) and they worked to some extent, but they don't get at the root cause of anxiety, so as soon as you stop taking them, you start having panic/anxiety symptoms again.
I have been undergoing Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT) and it is a Godsend, truly. It was really difficult at first, because the therapy makes you face down your thoughts (cognitive) and actions (behavioral) head-on and identify what is causing your anxiety and how your reactions are actually reinforcing the anxiety instead of making it better. Then you work to change your thoughts and behaviors, and thus eliminate the anxiety. Slowly but surely it works, and I am getting better and better every day without needing any kind of medication. I would recommend CBT to anyone who has panic and anxiety symptoms - it's hard work, but the results are nothing short of life-changing.

GIRD, GERD, diet and traditional Chinese medicine

Gastrointestinal Reflux Disorder (GIRD) and Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are two common digestive disorders that share similar symptoms: abdominal bloating, gas, nausea, shortness of breath and or acidic or sour taste in the mouth, throat, heartburn, burning sensation and or pain in the stomach, chest or behind the breastbone. Poor diet: too building or too cleansing tends to cause poor digestion, GIRD, GERD.
Digestion is a simple and orderly process. The stomach is the first digestive organ to receive and process food. It produces and mixes food with hydrochloric acid and enzymes designed specifically to digest animal protein and fat. This mixture sits and ferments (souring process), breaks down, before being sent down into the small intestine, for further digestion and eventual nutrient absorption into the bloodstream. Whatever food, fluids not digested, absorbed, become waste that is sent to the large intestine, for temporary storage, and eventual elimination from the body.
The major symptom of GIRD and GERD is heartburn caused by the backflow of hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the esophagus HCl, produced by the stomach, irritates and burns sensitive tissues. Esophageal sphincter muscles that control the opening and closing of the valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach generally prevent its back flow. Poor diet, overeating and or tight clothing tend to cause back flow of HCl, heartburn.
The throat, stomach and small intestine are more or less one long tube (thirty plus feet) that connects to another tube, large intestine (five feet), and ending in the anus. Overeating, especially protein, fat and starch (bread, cookies, pretzels, etc.) tend to clog the stomach and or small intestine, preventing the downward movement of food, which instead collects, clogs, festers (heat up, excess fermentation) and backs up, rebels like a clogged pipe that overflows causing burping, sour breath, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Weak digestion via long-term low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate (pasta, bread, salads, tropical fruits, juices, etc.) also causes reflux. Protein and fat build and fuel. Too little tends to weaken, slow digestion, movement of food, causing it to collect and clog. Too many fruits, vegetables, juices, cold drinks, etc. especially at the beginning of the meal, tend to dilute and weaken digestive acid and enzymes, reducing nutrient absorption, blood, while also slowing the movement of food producing abdominal bloating, gas, burping, reflux and or heartburn, depending on the rest of the diet.
Pregnancy, excess weight and or tight clothing, belts can also obstruct, block and clog the stomach and small intestine causing a backflow of energy, food, fluids, GIRD, GERD. Never ignore the obvious. Always ask questions, analyze.
The middle diet, meal plan, adjusted accordingly is recommended. Spices, Kim Chi (Korean spicy cabbage) help relieve heartburn. Reduce salads, tropical fruits, cold drinks, milk, yogurt and cottage cheese.
Case history: A female customer of mine was having digestive problems. Every time she ate, she would experience abdominal bloating, gas, burping, pain and heartburn. Her diet was anemic: low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate (pasta, bread, salads, fruit, juices, etc.). I suggested fennel seeds (one-quarter teaspoon after each meal).in addition to the hotter, middle diet. I told her to eat more protein, cooked foods, spices, etc. Three weeks later, she came back and hugged me. Her digestive problems and hot flashes (which she had not told me about) had disappeared. I told her (43 years old) that her hot flashes were not caused by menopause but instead intestinal heat via indigestion, stagnation of food, waste. Her doctor had diagnosed her as menopausal; which I thought was a little premature.

Hi right now i have been getting headaches jaw teeth throb pressure and sharp also gas and i have been getting spasms or sharp throbbing pressure in chest and cramping pressure and numbness in arm chest and back and sweating ect. i do suffer from anxiety.I have been to 7 docs that say my heart is fine 7 ekgs 3 blood work 1 showed lack of oxygen and 5 chest xrays and a ugi and a gallbladder scan and a thing to check for bloodclots in lungs.What could this be?I get it with and without exertion.

Sounds like angina. Do you have any nitroglicerin? If you do, and you take it, does the pain go away or get better? If so, there's very likely some restriction in the blood supply to the heart muscle.

Who all is treating their disorder the natural way, no meds?
I am diagnosed schizo-affective with severe anxiety and have tried lots of meds and finally decided to stop them. Im living a very happy life dealing with the things on my own and being spiritual with my God. i've found this is all the help i need, and with the guidance of my guardian i can live a happy successful life. Thus said, i have made my first plan and am sticking to it, something very hard to do with my bipolar manic phases. im going to join the Air Force next year as it will be one year i have been off my medications.

I did it the "natural" way, I used weed to self medicate, and when I stopped, I relapsed, really BADLY.
It depends on the severity of the disorder. If its manageable, I think people don't even notice they have the disorder, thus never get medicated.
If it is moderate, then some people try to do it the natural way, but it comes back to haunt them eventually, but sometimes it might never show itself again, as long as the triggers are being managed too.
If its serious, I don't think anyone should/anyone does not take medicine. Most people that don't take medicine with a serious form of a disorder end up living pretty messed up lives.
So either your disorder is really mild(which doesn't sound like it) or you might feel normal/able to handle you problems alone, but you might relapse into a bad episode sooner or later.
Schizo-affective disorder is partly(not sure if fully) a biological disorder with psychological effects. So there is no way to tell if you might get hit with a bad episode, but since its biological, something could eventually trigger it.
Also, I didn't know you could be allowed to enter the Air Force with a bipolar disorder/schizo-affective disorder. That's pretty cool.
