Working Abroad in Japan: working to Eikaiwa

If you search on all major Eikaiwa - English Channel Business CRAM-school, you will find their websites, you can find endless websites and forums totally backfires. It seems that every English teacher in Japan hate those guys. But should you be careful?

In fact, take everything you read with a grain of salt. This applies to sites, but also enemies. I Eikaiwa worked for a long time ago, and I have some friends who work for them. I want to give you a little run down, given the advantages and disadvantages, which I hope will help you make an informed decision.

I worked for one of the most famous one - that I will not name not here. (But it shares the same name as a famous model Chevrolet 70s). I can not totally hate them, because they have hired and started up in Japan. I also paid fairly well, but I have experience teaching in a short period of time, more experience if I had a degree in education back to the states. So, if you look at things from a totally utilitarian perspective, these big Eikaiwa you come here and put you in place. When people at home say they want to teach in Japan, I always say it's a good way to come here.

Basically, an Eikaiwa, you teach 6-8 lessons per day (by company). You'll have quick 10-15 minute breaks between lessons, but you must use this time to write assessments and lessons get the next loans. I do not know of other schools, but mine was simplified so that you do not really make a more or preparation. All times are usually afternoon or evening, which is great if you're a person night.

Eight lessons per day is ridiculous, but you get used to. It's amazing how long you get used to. If I had to go eight lessons Tomorrow, I certainly could not do it, but when I worked for the cram-school I've ever felt.

It's hard, but on the side positive, you get tons of teaching experience. Not only will you learn about students, you will also learn what types of activities lessons and work and do not work. I use this knowledge of all time to date.

Now I teach myself and prepare all my own lessons and do all my calendar, I kind of understand that school, I worked for everything done for me. When these large companies, you just walk, do your lessons, and walk OUT. You never take anything with you, or worry about what you are going to teach the next day.

On the negative side, these schools often use teaching materials and ugly little regard for student progress. Despite this, if you're a good teacher, you can make valuable lessons for students. You can still care about students, even if the company no.

At the end of the day, these companies are interested in money and nothing else. If you really want to be a teacher, it can be depressing. The lessons, teachers, students, staff, are all interchangeable. This is why it is called "English fast food. "To me, this term has become a really negative environment and that is one reason why I finally left.

Do I honestly have depression? Im so confused with myself!?

I've seen my therapist twice and she made me do a depression test to see how depressed I am. Apparently I scored pretty darn high. Then I did Beck Depression Inventory today, and I scored above a 30++ so that would mean depression as well.

But you see, the problem is... I know I'm not happy. I fantasize about stepping in front of a bus, I just attempted suicide 4 days ago, I know I seriously dislike myself, I feel like an absolute failure, I feel worthless, my future is bleak beyond hope. But there are also times when I feel alright. Like now. I've been feeling... close-to normal these past 2 days. It's hard to describe it. But I get depressed immediately once someone hits a trigger. Then I go into this whole self loathing state of mind. But I get out of it, if someone's there to keep my mind off it. I don't find it too hard to concentrate anymore. I'm starting to eat again. I don't know, this is so confusing.

Am I well again?

You need to get different medication. Whatever they're giving you isn't working.

You might only have to take a low level antidepressant for about 6 months to get your levels straightened out!

*When you’re willing to accept change and go through the process of self-improvement, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is. We should always remember that there’s no such thing as ‘over night success’. Ok what is the best thing for me to do?

I am teenage male who often finds himself questioning his own identity. I've took many online quizes and went to actual medical sights with symptoms. Currently I've self diagnosed myself with a foot fetish, an addiction to pornography, bipolar disorder, depression, low self esteem, and a serious loner status. What should I do?
I don't want to abolish the foot fetish, but I want it reduced to only an attraction, not rejection. Currently it is an obsession
My porn addiction is once per day, not every hour.

I think you may have some serious things going on but you may be going through some normal stuff too.

Self diagnosis is never a good idea. For the bipolar disorder and depression, you should probably see a doctor.

As for the porn addiction, define addiction to you. To me, just because someone really, really likes porn doesn't mean they are an addict. I only consider them an addict if they are cutting class, and blowing off the job/friends/family to go watch porn. My stance on foot fetishes are, as long as you aren't hurting anyone or causing trouble, what's the problem? Do what makes you happy.

The loner status is only a bad thing if you think it is. Some people are happy being to themselves and there isn't anything wrong with that. Everyone acts like if you aren't out going and the life of the party there's something wrong with you but there really isn't, that's just how you are.

If you think being a loner is bad, you'll have to work on your low self esteem. Focus on your good points instead of your bad to boost your confidence. Also, when talking to people keep your body language "open", don't cross your arms and your legs. When making small talk, do not complain to try and find things in common. Talk about things you like and things that make you happy to establish a friendship.

Iq Tests: are You Really Clever?

Have you ever been into an IQ test?

 

Some time ago I was involved in a test of this kind and as soon as I reached the end I got a score representative of my “intelligence”. It was one of those online tests taking about half an hour of your time, where you surf between anagrams, mathematical series and visual pattern recognition. An average person should score around 100 and when you totalize over 120 you are said to belong to an elite of “superior” or “gifted” individuals.

 

As a consequence, when you score high you feel great, a genius, but on the other side of the badge a low score can make you question your brain power and you will end up to claim that this kind of tests are mere trivial mind games and nothing more, taking your self esteem back.

 

Following the above considerations, what I wonder is whether these tests are a really good assessment of intelligence or not. IQ is a “psychometric” test, measuring mental ability, but define intelligence is far from being simple. Some psychologists believe that intelligence can somewhat be genetically inherited, while others sustain the thesis that the development of the mind might be the result of social background. The way to determine the real validity of an IQ test to assess general intelligence is debatable. Many see those tests as an appraisal of problem solving skills rather than a metric to measure intelligence. Besides, they are not accurate tests of creativity and other elements important to assess and individual’s effective intellect power.

 

Anyway IQ tests are popular and because of their supposed ability to measure intelligence they have been widely used by many companies and institutions over the years. There are many associations where the entry requirement is a particular high IQ score, like the famous Mensa, gathering something like 3% of the civilized population. Other groups which flourished and spread on the internet are so elitarian that will accept only members with an IQ of 140 or higher –Albert Einstein was supposed to score around 160.

 

In conclusion, when you take an IQ test don’t be too excited or depressed by your score, your genius can be misunderstood.

I took a bunch of those little online quiz things, but I'm afraid maybe i read it wrong and it exxagerated so I'm not really depressed. If I went to see a psychologist and I was WRONG and there wasn't anythign wrong with me I'd feel really, really stupid and bad about myself over it. "Every week when I go to school to take the test I feel like there's a gun at my head - a loaded gun pointed directly at my head."

I understood exactly how she felt, and I know how hard it is to get through court reporting school. At the same time though, I knew that it was this very attitude, this "mindset" that was blocking her from passing the test. She had the "I must pass or I will die syndrome "- and she had it bad!

"The Magic of Non-Attachment" is the title and it suggests that to pass a test you should give it your best, work hard, really do your homework and go to the test with the intention of passing. But then... let go. Let go of the results! Come back to the truth: that pass or fail - you will be O.K. All of the "I will die (or I will be totally humiliated) if I don't pass" is simply not true! It's a lot drama - self-created drama - and it is blocking you from performing on the test. Who can perform with all that heavy weight on their shoulders?!

To come back to the truth: that you will be O.K no matter what happens with the test, releases you from the grip of desperation and anxiety.  It frees you up to study, to focus, to retain information and to think on your feet on the day of the test. To embrace this approach, brings yourself back into balance about the test, and will significantly increase your odds of passing.

The very same afternoon following my session with the court reporter client, I had another client, also a court reporting student, who went to the same school. In addition to being a student, he'd taken a job working at the school's front desk. He had a very cool, relaxed attitude, and when I asked him about it he said, "...working at the school I know every  student, I'm the one who gives them their books on the first day, and I see them every morning, every lunchtime, month after month, year after year. I can tell you right now which ones are going to succeed. The one's who get all bent out of shape about every test are going to get stuck and never finish school. The one's who take the tests without getting upset, the one's who don't seem to attach too much importance to every test - they're the ones who are going to be court reporters."

That's it. That's the Zen of test taking.

Test Anxiety- Nothing New But Needs Care

Students, generally, carry some sort of pressure to perform. Naturally, they would like to excel, which may or may not be for self satisfaction. Test anxiety occurs quite normally in people. Anyone who has ever taken a test knows what it takes to fail and go through incredible cramming sessions and incessant writing of notes and also a complete blank-out in the head. However, test anxiety is the easiest to overcome. But test anxiety sometimes projects as an anxiety disorder. Diagnoses may get a little hard if it happens so.

Sweaty palms are the most easily viewable symptoms of test anxiety. This is considered to be the most primitive and normal test anxiety. Fear creeps in with a sense of malaise and students tend to overcome these symptoms by adopting a few measures first up. A few tips are mentioned below:

1. planning study rather than just cramming
2. undergoing practice tests
3. deep and concentrated breathing before an exam
4. self-affirmation before a test
5. Taking extra tutoring prior to a big exam, if the problems happen to be with materials. A good guidance can always be a healthy booster
6. speaking out your fears with family and friends

But for few students, unfortunately, test anxiety goes over board. The symptoms are more serious if it is a more aggressive anxiety disorder. Fear, insomnia, heart palpitations and fear are the extra symptoms to worry about. This is mostly the case if the symptoms repeat frequently prior to the tests. In most of the cases, the techniques of relaxation for a normal test anxiety may not have a major impact on people who suffer from full fledged anxiety disorder.

If you ever suspect a anxiety disorder, you should be smart enough a person to seek advice medically. The treatments help you in a big way to overcome this disorder and make life more peaceful and less complicated. If the anxiety in you goes beyond a point, it is very important you seek good advice. Anxiety disorders might be terrible if left unchecked.
