Supplements to Help Relieve Depression

Sometimes life just seems to get the best of us. Even if you are the kind of person who is usually positive and on-the-go, you can have periods where you feel down and blue without being able to pinpoint exactly why. This could be a sign of depression. Many times when people hear that word, they think it could not possibly apply to them. However, there are a surprising number of people in the world who suffer from depression, often suffering in silence.

If you think you may be depressed, your best bet is to consult a physician. He or she may want to prescribe you certain medications, or suggest talk therapy. If you are not ready for prescription medication, or if you would simply prefer to keep your treatment natural, there are a number of supplements on the market that will enable you to get help while keeping it simple. There is a good selection of popular, helpful and well-documented supplements available in your local health food store or vitamin shop.

One of the most long-standing and well-known supplements for depression is an herb called St. John’s Wort. St. John’s Wort is also known as a hypericum. It is popular because it is known anecdotally to produce far fewer side effects than many of the popular prescription medications. Medications such as Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft are part of a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Other prescription-only drugs available for depression relief are those with brand names such as Nardil or Eldepryl, which belong to a class of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAO inhibitors.

The problem with either of these classes of drugs is that they can cause long-term side effects including ones of which we are not even certain. The short term problems range from shortness of breath, to sexual dysfunction, to weight gain or weight loss, to nausea and headaches. The list is actually quite long; the side effects of St. John’s Wort are few and far between. There are even studies that indicate certain foods should be avoided altogether while on MAO inhibitors, whereas no such warning exists for St. John’s Wort use. The only recommendation is that if you are currently using one of the prescription medications, you should speak with your doctor about how to safely discontinue use before starting to supplement with St. John’s Wort.

Another supplement that has increased in popularity for depression treatment is 5-Hydroxytryptophan, more commonly referred to as 5-HTP. In the United States, it is sold in natural food stores and vitamin shops for a variety of different uses, one of which is for relief of symptoms of depression. It is also useful as a sleep aid and an appetite suppressant. 5-HTP is not an herb, but an amino acid. Amino acids are naturally occurring in the body, and generally regarded as safe for consumption. This amino acid in particular can be found in small amounts in some foods, most notably cheese and poultry.

However, statistically one would have to consume a diet consisting of nothing but these two foods in order to get enough of it to help with depression. Hence, supplementation is a viable alternative to get the amount required for treatment. Since 5-HTP gets converted to serotonin with the help of the vitamin B-6, it is thought to work somewhat like the SSRIs but without the need for a prescription and again, without the potentially nasty side effects. One should not start a regimen of 5-HTP supplementation without consulting a physician, especially if he or she is already using another drug, herb or supplement for treatment of depression. The mixture could potentially be unsafe.

Some people prefer to treat depression with natural energy boosters, hoping that their lifted energy levels will subsequently lift their spirits. If this sounds more appealing to you, you can try a supplement called SAM-e. SAM-e stands for S-Adenosyl methionine, which is part of a methyl group that produces certain chemical reactions within the body. It too is naturally occurring, so supplementing with it is a decidedly better alternative for many people. SAM-e is produced and used by the liver, and while this supplement is touted as being quite effective, it does have a higher report of some side effects similar to the prescription drugs already mentioned. In rare circumstances, anxiety has been known to occur. Therefore, those prone to both anxiety and depression may want to avoid SAM-e.

For other mood-elevating substances, one could look to less potent supplements such as fish oils, B-vitamins, and ginseng. These are all energy-producing and mood balancing and come without any side effects. If you want to lift your spirits but are not ready to visit the idea of prescription drugs or even a strong natural supplement, you may want to start here. You could be on your way to feeling better by taking these supplements to care for yourself.

Most of the time people neglect to take deep breaths. Taking shallow breaths can actually increase tension. Inhaling deeply into your lungs releases toxins and relaxes your muscles. Getting more oxygen into the body and releasing physical tension are effective ways to achieve instant stress relief.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a process by which you tense and relax your muscles in specific groups. This can be performed at work, at home or in the car. It's a skill you must develop but it can help you feel calmer and also help you handle complex and stressful situations.

Is it normal for a 15 year old girl to feel like this?

i am a 15 year old girl and get very stressed and then sometimes cry for no reason, shout and people, get angry and grab people begging them for stuff (e.g telling them that somethings wrong and i need help), i punch walls and things, take stuff out on my bf because he tells me to now he wants me to be carmer, yesterday cried for 5 hours non stop becuase of school, friends, family and everyday stuff. I like helping out with my friends problems (one of my friends was in a rape incident i got her to tell police and now things are ok)
i have self harmed once before but i dont do cutting now because i know how bad it is but i ripped lots of hair out yesterday. I have started my period again after 3 months of missing it which i find a relief.
Could this be hormones? Could it be depression or PMS?
Does anyone have any relaxing techniques? I do find it relaxing to rip up paper and throw it ?

Well, it sounds like anxiety? I believe. Luckily, part of taming anxiety caused worries is relaxation.
Tips that I have got from my doctors:
Painting
Thinking about a happy place (mine was in the bottom of my parents walk in shower with the water running, very calming.)
Singing
Sleeping
Listening to music or the radio
Having a shower
Thinking about happy THOUGHTS!
Write down on pieces of paper the EXACT opposite you are thinking.

Hello, I have been taking GNC Fish Oil (300mg x 3 a day), B-Complex 50 (1 a day), Vitamin D-3 (800 IU x 1 a day), and a Centrum Multi-Vitamin daily for a little over two weeks to lift my major depression I am experiencing right now but have had no relief so far. Am I doing something wrong? I really wanted to try a natural approach but I find myself tired, irritable, and frustrated each day still. Along with this I am spending more time outdoors and really trying to stay motivated. Should this have kicked in yet? It's so hard to live life like this. I took Effexor XR three years ago and it was so hard to wean off of that medication that I am really trying to stay away from other meds. I also suffer from Anxiety and panic attacks which makes me more sensitive to meds and I can hardly tolerate the side effects of any of the SSRI's. As for my major depression, it lifted and has not returned ever since I'd sorted out my faulty thinking pattern about that particular person (a woman) who caused it. I whole heartedly suggest you the same!

I do not know how the baby-husband problem got solved in the end. All I know is that your husband seems such a selfish and senseless cruel beast to me that I seriously hope that you moved back to your parents, got divorced, kept the baby and sued his heartless, merciless ass.

Can Stress, Poor Diet, and Lack of Sufficient Sleep Cause Depression?

I'm a 20-Year old male in college and I have felt depressed for the last month, since the semester started. Examining my own habits, I've noticied that I'm lacking several things including:

*Stress. Since the semester began, I've found myself more and more stressed. I don't go out and socialize. I find myself stuck at home, and committing to school work. I think I'm overcommited to school work and I should try to relax. In addition, my job is dull and boring. I've been doing the same job for the past (3) years.

*Diet. I NEVER eat breakfast because I find I don't have the time to do so. When I get back home from school, I find myself eating "junk" food.

****My biggest concern is my lack of sleep. I feel tired during the day, but around 2-3 A.M. I find I have alot of energy. I wished it was the opposite so I could have more energy in the day. What steps do I need to take to combat my fatigue and depression?

Job stress results when we work too much or under bad circumstances, and it's not news to anyone that such stress can make us sick. But there's a wrinkle that flies under the radar in the stress and health discussion: Not only can an excessively stressful career make us sick, but once we get sick, our lower energy levels affect the quality and quantity of the work we can do, and sooner or later, our impaired performance can in turn ruin our careers.

Unfortunately, excess stress on a daily basis is something all too familiar to lots of people. And for all too many, it has already resulted in an assortment of health problems, ranging from the merely annoying, embarrassing, and slightly painful, such as cold sores, acne, neck pain, headaches, and hair loss, all the way to obesity, heart attacks, and even death.

Sometimes things can get so bad, that karoshi may seem like a merciful way out. But let's focus on the kinds of health consequences that result from stress that doesn't quite kill you and on the impact they can have on your career in turn. If the stress is ongoing, and it usually is, you may well end up suffering for years, alive but not so well.

We know that when the body experiences stress, it releases adrenalin and cortisol as part of our primitive fight-or-flight response. These important hormones help increase the oxygen level in the blood and boost the sugar in the blood - preparing us to either flee or fight.

That reaction may have been useful in an era where fighting or fleeing would have been considered reasonable options. But if your boss is yelling at you, neither bonking him on the kisser nor running away screaming qualifies as appropriate behavior. Instead, there you are, a sitting duck, flooded with stress hormones that have no place to go and serve no purpose except wreak havoc on your well-being.

What havoc? For example, the immune system is suppressed or damaged, which compromises your body's ability to resist infection. So you're the first to catch the office cold and the last to recover from it. And then there are a number of chronic health conditions are either caused or made worse by stress, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, migraine headaches, and heart disease. Some research suggests that stress can even cause cancer - or push the body over that critical hurdle where our immune system is just no longer strong enough to fight it off.

There are also slightly less obvious conditions, less obvious at least to the outside observer: depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and adrenal burnout.

They all have in common that they'll sap your energy and make it very difficult to get much work done. Come performance review, you'll have some explaining to do. And if anything, that'll make your stress-levels even worse.

Can you see where this is heading? Stress may hurt your body, but it will also hurt your career if you don't manage to get on top of it. Ratcheting down your stress levels has got to be a top priority, because it may not only cost you your health but your job as well. And then, what will you do for health insurance?

how do you cope with job stress? i am in counseling right now for depression and i also just have lots of mood swings and racing thoughts. (i'm not looking for a diagnosis...just letting you know where things stand)

my boss fired my friend today, for no real reason except she said it was too hard to schedule him anymore. i think this is unreasonable and it makes me mad.

how do i go into work tomorrow and stay calm? stuff like this is very hard for me, it makes my relationships suffer. it's a family business and i don't want to speak to anyone who runs it right now. but they will ask me why i'm not talking and i don't want to get real mad, because i could get fired.

Beyond doing relaxation techniques, you should take some time to evaluate the future. Is this a job you can see yourself in for the next 20 years (my guess is 'no'). If not, why aren't you elsewhere. My guess (and I could be wrong) is that you are either unsure of what you want to do or you don't feel like you have the qualifications to do whatever it is that you want to do.

Find something outside of work that you can go to in your mind when your job is driving you crazy. It could be a hobby, but the most effective thing is if you are working toward your future outside of work... taking a class, learning a skill (even if it is a hobby - like woodworking or home remodelling - like the classes that they do at home depot). If you know you won't be there forever, it won't seem so unbearable. If you know that you are qualified enough that finding a new job will be a snap, you won't have any problem being assertive (being aggressive, sarcastic, or mean will never get you ahead, so you might want to start with an Interpersonal Communications course at your local community college, tech school, or university - even if you 'klep' it - meaning take it for no grade).

You might also find that going to church on the weekend helps - not only socially, but to be around people who know that there is something more important than the day to day garbage that we all have to deal with (hmmm. maybe I should take my own advice).

Finally, having outside interests and skills will definitely help on that lovely day when you decide that you just can't take it anymore and turn in your two weeks notice. Maybe you'll even be doing it to run your own business. Wouldn't that be awesome!

This increases blood norepinephrine above normal levels, but since MAO inhibitors are being taken, it cannot be degraded by the body and so stays high enough to increase blood pressure. Other antidepressant drugs, such as amphetamines, also act as MAO inhibitors and, when combined with foods containing tyramine and dopamine, can precipitate severe or even lethal side effects.

Two eggs and a milk shake, one and one-half cups of tuna salad, four ounces of a roast, three frankfurters, two cups of ice cream, or two pieces of cheesecake represent approximately 500 calories each.

5. Eat Healthy. There are foods that promote calmness as well as foods that increase stress levels. Busy moms should ask themselves if they are consuming too much sugar or caffeine, and if they are getting enough protein. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and staying away from refined and processed foods also help. Healthy eating is very important for any busy mom. Taking a look at your eating habits and making the necessary changes can result in increased optimal health.

6. Call a friend. It is always important to have at least one relationship where Mom can just vent and know that a listening ear and unconditional acceptance will be given.

7. Calm Your Thoughts. Our thoughts create the lives we live so be aware of what you think about. Abraham said 'Worrying is using your imagination to create something you don't want'. What are you creating with your worries?

8. Don't Forget To Laugh. Laughing is good for you and with children around there are usually lots of things to laugh at -from the things they say to the things you find yourself saying back to them. Close the door and forget about everything else for an hour or so. This helps to increase levels of calmness and the calmer we feel, the less likely we are to get stressed out or depressed. 2. Read a Book

Reading is one of the simplest forms of relaxation for mind and body? Picking up a book and allowing our minds to add colour to the black and white pages, can relieve the stresses and strains that modern life places upon us. There are many other benefits too! There is a wealth of choice in ‘self improvement’, ’motivation’, or ‘educational’ books which may provide answers to questions we have always asked ourselves, or at least guide us in the right direction! There is no better place to start than your local Library, where you will find expert help and guidance from the staff. 3. Excercise Regularly.

Regular excercise has been shown to reduce stress so get moving. Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, aerobic dancing, walking or any of dozens of other activities can help your heart. They all cause you to feel warm, perspire and breathe heavily without being out of breath and without feeling any burning sensation in your muscles. Whether it is a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all exercise adds up to a healthier heart.

4. Laugh. Keep your sense of humor. Laugh a lot.

Brighten your mood and improve your sense of

well-being. Facilitate positive social interaction.

Reduce anxiety, tension, depression, anger, and

hostility. Lower your stress level. Exercise your heart and cardiovascular system and Reduce pain. Can't figure out how to get started? Go see a funny movie or read a funny book. The first way to use candles in relaxation and stress relief is a very simple, yet utterly effective method. Simply take a deep breath, and stare at the flame of the candle while it is lit. Focus in on the area at the base of the wick where the flames color is blue. Watch how the colors subtly change as you stare into the flame. Take deep, calming breaths while relaxing and simply focusing on the candle flame. It helps if this is done in a darkened room, however the exercise is effective even while in a brightly lit space. Of course, the act of simply having lit candles is very relaxing in itself. Whether simply around the house, in the bathtub, or during intimate moments, candles can enhance and bring peacefulness to our hectic lives. So the next time you are looking for a quick way to de-stress and ground yourself, look no further than the wax and wick!

6. Schedule a massage or pedicure once a month.

Get a manicure and pedicure. Science has proven that there are pressure points located on our feet and hands. These areas can cause additional pain during stressful times. A nice manicure and pedicure will help soothe those pressure points.

Plain and simple, the effects of stress on the body can be extremely detrimental. When a muscle is stressed, circulation is reduced and both oxygen and nutrients are blocked. Massage is a terrific way to loosen up the muscles, increase the circulation and bring oxygen and nutrients back to the area. It may also release stored toxins, so it's important to flush out your system by drinking water after a session.

7. Set realistic, obtainable goals and meet them.

One of the major causes of stress and depression is a feeling of going nowhere, a feeling that life is just passing by.
