Separation Anxiety Dog
Separation Anxiety Dog Problems
Diagnosed in roughly 10 to 15% of all dogs reported to have some kind of behavioural problem, this psychological disease is pretty common. Sadly, many dogs which are rehomed via shelters after owners give them up have this condition. Treatment for this condition can be psychologically wearing, both upon the owner and the dog, in severe cases many take a period of many months to complete.
So what exactly is it that causes this condition in dogs? Dogs are pack animals and see their human carers simply as a higher ranked member of the pack, or even the alpha male or female. Being social creatures (as opposed to say cats, which are solitary hunting animals largely) they love to please and can form very strong emotional bonds. Separation anxiety dog issues may result as of an attachment to humans where the dog becomes distressed without a particular individual(s) companionship. There are a wide range of undesired activites such as biting, chewing furniture, innappropriate urination to name just a few!
training for this uncommon disorder may be effective, but dogs suffering from this disorder must be treated with patience, love and care. It is important for the indentification of the separation anxiety, dog training and owner compassion to go hand in hand to begin treating this tough condition. Slowly the dog must be left alone for longer periods or trained to be alone. If you dog is suffering from this problem, or you simply wish to learn more: Click Here

How to abruptly wean 16-month (for medical reasons)?
I just found out that I have Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
The treatment is 21 days of an antibiotic that is incompatible with breastfeeding - there are no alternatives.
I have a 16-month old son who will have to be instantly weaned starting tonight with my first dose and I can find no information online on the best ways to ease this process for him.
It is Friday afternoon and all of the lactation consultants have left for the weekend, so I have nobody else to ask.
I know it's not going to be easy but any advice on making it less traumatic will be appreciated.
He's also going through separation anxiety from me, so this is really bad timing. (I'm home with him all day so he doesn't have to be away from me very often)
my mom had to wean me abrubtly because I got a stomach virus. Her pediatrician told her to use something sweet as an alternative to breast milk so that the baby would want to drink it. She gave me flattened caffeine-free coke. Open the bottles or cans and let them sit and then give them to the baby. I hope this works out for you!

Separation Anxiety In Dogs
Separation anxiety is one of the most common problems that dogs develop. Its an anxiety disorder, and is defined as a state of intense panic brought on by the dogs isolation or separation from her owner. In other words, when you leave for work in the morning, your dog is plunged into a state of nervous anxiety which intensifies extremely quickly. Dogs are social animals they need plenty of company and social interaction to keep them happy and content. No dog likes to be left alone for long stretches of time, but some dogs do a lot worse than others and these are the ones most prone to separation anxiety. There are a number of contributing causes to the condition.
Some breeds are genetically predisposed towards anxiety and insecurity, which is something you should consider when deciding which breed you are going to go for particularly if you are going to be absent for long stretches of time. A few of these breeds include Weimaraners, Springer Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Airedales. A significant proportion of dogs from shelters develop separation anxiety. Most of these shelter dogs have undergone significant trauma in their lives they have been abandoned by their previous owners and thus they have little trust that their new found owner.
Dogs that were separated from their mothers and siblings too early have been identified as being especially prone to separation anxiety. Puppies from pet stores are a perfect example of this. They are usually taken from their mothers well before the earliest possible age which is 8 weeks, and confined to a small glass box in the pet store for anywhere between a few weeks to two months. This early weaning, coupled with the lack of exercise and affection while in the pet store, is psychologically traumatic for the dog.
Neglect is the number one cause of sepration anxiety for dogs. If you are absent much more than you are present in your dogs life, separation anxiety is pretty much inevitable. Your dog needs your company, affection, and attention in order to be happy and content. The symptoms of separation anxiety are pretty distinctive. Your dog will usually learn to tell when you are about to leave, she wll hear keys jingling, will see you putting on your outdoor clothes, and will become anxious. She may follow you from room to room, whining, trembling, and crying. Some dogs even become aggressive, in an attempt to stop their owners from leaving.
When you have left, the anxious behavior will rapidly worsen and usually will peak within half an hour. She may bark incessantly, scratch and dig at windows and doors, an attempt to escape from confinement and reunite herself with you, chew inappropriate items, even urinate and defecate inside the house. In extreme cases, she might self mutilate by licking or chewing her skin until its raw, or pulling out fur or will engage in obsessive compulsive behaviors, like spinning and tail chasing.
Upon your return, she will be excessively excited, and will leap around you in a frenzy of delight for a protracted period of time more than the 30 seconds to one minute of a happy, well balanced dog. This extended greeting is a source of some misunderstanding without realizing that such a greeting actually signifies the presence of a psychological disorder, some owners actually encourage their dog to get more and more worked up upon their return by fuelling the dogs excitement, encouraging her to leap around, paying her protracted attention, and so on.
If you are behaving in this way with your dog, please stop. I know its tempting and very easy to do, and it seems harmless after all, she is so happy to see you, what harm can it do to return her attention and affection in equal measure? but in actuality, you are just validating her belief that your return is the high point of the day. So she is as happy as Larry when you return but, when its time for you to leave again, her now exaggerated happiness at your presence is under threat, and she gets even more unhappy when you walk out that door. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimize your dogs tendency towards anxiety. Here is a short list of what to do.
Do exercise the heck out of her. Really wear her out, the longer you expect to be away, the more exercise she should get before you leave. For example, if you are leaving for work in the morning, she will probably be by herself for at least four hours and, if you have got a dog walker to take her out mid day instead of coming back yourself, she will not see you, the person she really cares about for at least nine hours. So she needs a good, vigorous walk fifteen to twenty minutes is the absolute minimum here, before you walk out that door. More is even better.
Distract her from her boredom, loneliness, and anxiety by giving her an attractive alternative to pining, pacing, and whining. All dogs love to chew, why not play on this predisposition? Get a couple of marrowbones from the butcher, bake them in the oven for 20 minutes so they go nice and hard and crunchy and so she can not smear marrow all over your furniture, slice them up into chunks of a few inches long, and give her one about 15 minutes before you leave. It will keep her happy and occupied, and will act as a smokescreen for your departure.
When you leave, put the radio on to a soothing station, classical music is ideal, but any station featuring lots of talk shows is also ideal. Keep the volume quite low, and it will calm her down a bit and give her the feeling that she has got company. If at all possible, supply her with a view. If she can see the world going by, thats the next best thing to being out and about in it.
Acclimatize her to your leaving. Taking things nice and slowly, practice getting ready to go, jingle your keys about, put on your coat, and open the door. Then without leaving sit back down and do not go anywhere. Do this until shes not reacting any more. When there are no reaction, give her a treat and lavish praise for being so brave. Next, practice actually walking out the door and returning immediately, again doing this until there are no reaction. Gradually work up, gradually being the operative word here until you are able to leave the house with no signs of stress from her.
Do not act overtly sympathetic when she is crying. Although it sounds very cold hearted, trying to soothe and comfort your dog by patting her and cooing over her is actually one of the worst things you can do. Its essentially validating her concern. Make sure she can not tell that you feel sorry for her, do not ever say, its ok, good girl when she is upset.

Canine separation anxiety is a neurological distress response to: separation from the person to whom the dog is attached, high degree of uncertainty of an outcome, or the probability of punishment. In dogs with this condition, the level of anxiety is disproportionate to the inciting circumstances. Brain chemistry plays a significant role in the development and progression of separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety are suffering and require effective behavioral management and medical intervention.
In the average U.S. veterinary practice, approximately 14% of canine patients exhibit one or more signs of separation anxiety. This behavioral disease is second only to aggression. The good news is that separation anxiety is a treatable disorder.
Separation anxiety is usually seen in younger dogs, especially when these pets are adopted from an animal shelter. It is not commonly seen in middle-aged dogs, although dogs that develop separation anxiety at a very young age may be at greater risk for recurrences later in life.
Separation anxiety is also common in older dogs. The hypothesis is that as animals age and lose sensory perception (hearing and sight) they become more dependent on their owners and may be more anxious when they are separated or even out of view.
Prolonged and constant human contact is frequently seen in cases of separation anxiety. Many dogs are so strongly attached to their owners that they will follow them from room to room to maintain close proximity.
Signs of separation anxiety can range from mild to severe:
Psychosomatic/medical consequences—excessive licking of haircoat, pacing, circling
Hyperattachment—excessive greeting behavior, constant pestering of owner
Hypersalivation
The behaviors associated with separation anxiety often occur within a short period of time after the animal is left alone, a unique feature which distinguishes separation anxiety from other behavioral disorders. A thorough history and physical examination (including blood tests) are needed to definitively diagnose separation anxiety and rule out other medical or behavioral differential diagnoses.
Clomicalm (clomipramine hydrochloride) alters behavior by its action on neurotransmitter systems within the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a significant role in fear and anxiety. Norepinephrine is involved with learning, memory, mood, arousal, and behavioral focus. Clomicalm blocks the uptake of both of these neurotransmitters in the brain. Increased levels of Serotonin reduces distress (fear) and associated signs in dogs with separation anxiety. Increased norepinephrine levels may stimulate the learning ability of some dogs, which may improve behavior modification.
Clomicalm tablets contain clomipramine hydrochloride, a tricyclic antidepressant. They are indicated for veterinary use in dogs greater than 6 months of age. This product is not labeled for use in treating canine aggression. Dogs receiving clomipramine have a decreased level of fear and anxiety and increased receptivity to behavioral modification. While clomipramine can cause transient lethargy, it does not act as a sedative.
The most common side effects are vomiting (emesis), lethargy, and diarrhea. Giving clomicalm with food may reduce vomiting. Clomicalm should not be used in male breeding dogs (testicular hypoplasia); in conjunction with Anipryl (l-deprenyl), Mitaban, or Amitraz; with CNS active drugs; with cimetidine or fluoxetine; dogs with cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, or glaucoma; or used within 7-14 days of general anesthesia.
Treatment of canine separation anxiety involves both medical intervention and behavioral modification/training. The course of treatment is determined on a case by case basis depending upon the dog’s response to therapy. Improvement may be seen within a few days, and typically is observed within one month or less of treatment. A standard length of treatment duration is two months, with some dogs needing longer treatment times. Because dogs with separation anxiety are truly suffering and can do real harm to themselves, treatment is the only humane option.
Behavioral modification techniques are based on the principles of desensitization and counter-conditioning. This training is neither complex nor time consuming. The basic techniques are easy to teach and perform.
Before beginning treatment, it is important to identify which behaviors are to be assessed and what level of progress is expected. While most dogs do respond well to treatment for separation related anxiety, treatment failures do occur. Signs of separation anxiety may return with changes to the dog’s environment or routine. Common precipitating factors include marriage, moving to a new house, a new baby, and changes in schedules (children going back to school or a new job with different hours). In such instances, additional treatment may be needed.
In all cases of canine separation anxiety, any form of reprimand or punishment is contra-indicated and may actually increase the dog’s anxiety.

Institutional Child Care Centers - Its Pros And Cons!
Choosing the appropriate child care centre is something very important. Their childhood must seem very active and happy else they will get into troubles like increased insecurity, excessive demand for attention, separation anxiety and behavioral problems. This will affect them a lot when they enter a grade school. There are many different organizations that come up with day care centers. Hence you have got to choose one from these innumerous options put forth. But with a proper analysis and research it can be done easily. Sometimes doing the trial and error will also help in deciding the best for your child. The one best suiting your child's nature must be chosen.
The most popular ones are the institutional child care in the US. These are open for children in the age group of six and above. They even take care of them in their school years. The expense in these day care centers is moderate when compared to the extremities in private and in home concerns. The cost is in accordance with the age and the period of stay. The fee must be paid every week irrespective of the count of days the child is present. Thus they provide the child with all facilities and teach them all basic lessons and math.
The classrooms are segregated on the basis of age. The classrooms with different age groups of students have one or more staffs as in charge to that particular class. The important factor is the child to staff ratio this goes in accordance with the licensing agreement of state. So it varies for different institutions not exceeding the guidelines. The care time starts before the children arrive and even few hours after they leave. They are fed lunch and breakfast. Play time and time for naps are also provided in the afternoon. Group activities for every age group of children are set for the whole day and there are specific times allotted for field trips, holiday activity and independent play. They are taught potty training and self feeding. For the preschool kids, basic skills like identify colors, letters and shapes, count and write their names.
Sending children to these institutions is beneficial in many aspects. They can easily adjust to the classroom atmosphere after these preschool care centers. They even get the mental strength to bare few situations in the absence of their parents. They get to all sorts of emergencies. The staffs working in such centers are trained to react appropriately to medical emergencies along with psychology and child development. Apart from these there are certain disadvantages also. They lack individual attention due to the large range of class strength and especially for children who badly need such intense care and affection. So such behavioral problems occur and it affects the children.
A good child care centre will let the parents come in and see their job to give them the trust and hope with their organization. Some concerns will also let parents to spend time with their children for the first two or three days. Thus the parents will find their child's comfort in the new atmosphere and can happily leave it to them in their absence. Thus most importantly a good child care centre must be chosen.

Separation anxiety with a nearly 3 year old?
Our son will be 3 next month and has never been watched by anyone other than family. We just joined a gym with a child watch center, and the first time he was fine. Second time, he cried and isolated himself from other kids. Third time, he flipped out, and we had to leave. The childcare attendants aren't giving any advice. How do we ease him into this and make it a better transition for him? He is to start preschool in the fall.
That is actually a very common problem for his age. He understands that you are leaving him and probably is worrying that you may not come back. I used to supervise a YMCA child watch and I can tell you that he will eventually get over it and have a great time. In my experience the best thing to do is to make sure that you explain to him what is going on, tell him "Mommy is going to ______ and I will be back in just a few minutes, this is a safe fun place for you to be and I will be right back to get you." He will probably still flip out, but the best thing for you to do is make the goodbye as SHORT as possible, the longer you linger, the longer he will be dramatic, he will put on a show for you. It would be a good Idea for you to ease him into spending time at the child watch. For instance, make the first visit really short, 5-10 minutes. Explain in to him the car what is going to happen, and when you get to the room, kiss him and make it a quick goodbye. LEAVE. He will be watching to see if you're standing at the door. Be gone for a few minutes and then come back Hug him and tell him what a great job he did. The next time you can do the same thing, but be gone for a little longer, extend how long you are gone over time. This should ease his discomfort a good bit. Another thing to consider is if he seems to connect with any of the staff members, try to make your visits on days that you know he or she will be there. Then when you go, you can tell him that he is going to "play with Miss ______." Or you could see if any of his regular playmates could go at the same time. It is a really good idea to get him comfortable with child watch before he starts preschool. Separation anxiety is a natural part of child development. It usually peaks around age two and should diminish over the next few years. The best thing that you can do for your child is leave him in a safe and fun atmosphere so that he knows that you will always come back. It's a good idea to give him lots of positive reinforcement and tell him how much you love him during this time. This will give him the confidence that you would never leave him for good.

Fear can keep us up all night long but faith makes one fine pillow. By Philip Gulley Find out about Child Separation Anxiety Disorder
What Is Separation Anxiety Disorder Anyway?
Separation anxiety disorder refers typically to younger children who are extremely unwilling to separate from major attachment figures (e.g., parents grandparents, older siblings) or from home. The threat of having to separate from a caregiver often results in anxiety as well, such as when parents plan to go out for the evening and leave the child with a sitter.
Primary symptoms: Excessive worry about potential harm toward oneself (e.g., getting sick at school) or one's primary caregivers (e.g., being in a car accident). The child may also avoid activities that may result in separation from parents. Nightmares and somatic complaints are common, inducing trembling, headaches, stomachaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and sweating.
Treatment: Cognitive-behavioral treatment for separation anxiety disorder is focused on teaching children several major skills. Children are taught to recognize anxiousfeelings regarding separation and to identify their physical reactions to anxiety. They are taught to identify their thoughts in anxiety provoking separation situations, and are taught to develop a plan to cope adaptively with the situation. Children are also taught to evaluate the success of the coping strategies they employed, and are taught to praise themselves for positive coping. In addition, behavioral strategies such as modeling, role-playing, relaxation training, and reinforced practice are used. Children are guided in developing a list of situations that are challenging for them, such as attending a birthday party without their parent, or staying home with a sitter. Children are taught to implement their coping skills while gradually facing each of these situations. Children's successes are praised highly by the therapist and by parents. Recent research has suggested that incorporating parents more centrally into the treatment of children with anxiety disorders can be extremely useful in reducing children's anxious behavior and may enhance treatment effectiveness and maintenance. Parents are often taught new ways to interact with their children so that the child's fears are not inadvertently reinforced. Parents are also taught ways to give children ample praise and positive reinforcement for brave behavior.

Do You suffer From Separation Anxiety Disorder? Find Out Today!
While separation anxiety disorder can affect people of all ages it is more prominent in children. Children usually exhibit symptoms of separation anxiety disorder when they are separated from familiar surroundings and familiar people. Most children will experience separation anxiety at some point in time but if symptoms become severe they may actually have a disorder that is of more concern than normal separation anxiety.
Separation anxiety disorder is evident in the following events:
- Recurring distress when separated from a certain person in their life such as a mother, father, or spouse.
- Constant or obsessive worrying about losing the person they are attached to.
- Constant worrying about some event that might happen to separate them from the person they are attached to.
- Excessive fear about being left alone without the subject of their attachment.
- Reluctance about going to sleep unless their attachment is nearby.
- Having nightmares about being separated from that person.
There are some children who suffer from separation anxiety disorder that also suffer from attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder, and panic disorder.
Separation anxiety is a normal event for children, especially those whose parents must leave them to go to work or when they begin school and are away from their parents. This is not the same as separation anxiety disorder. With separation anxiety disorder the condition becomes obsessive or compulsive. The reaction to certain events is much stronger than normal separation anxiety. The child with separation anxiety disorder may exhibit constant crying, shyness, silence, or an unwillingness to associate with others. Under normal circumstances these symptoms will go away on their own as soon as the child realizes that the situation is a normal part of life. For those who suffer from separation anxiety disorder those symptoms will exacerbate and get worse unless there is some sort of intervention.
There are steps that adults can take to help deal with separation anxiety disorder. Have a babysitter come to your house to get to know the child before you leave the child alone with them. This will allow the babysitter to develop a relationship with the child so that the child does not feel he is being left with a stranger.
Keep the same babysitter instead of changing them constantly. This will allow the child to become comfortable with the babysitter and know what to expect.
In the beginning, only leave the child for short periods of time. You can gradually increase the time each day so that your child has time to adjust.
Keep some of your child's favorite toys or a familiar blanket with your child when you plan to leave him. This will give him some sense of security because he is familiar with his own things.
Practice the same way to say goodbye each time you must leave your child. If you always kiss your child and tell them you love them before you leave you should keep this same behavior up every day. This way your child will know that when you hug them and tell them you love them you are about to leave them for a while. Assure your child that you will return. Try to not be late picking them up because this could cause them unnecessary anxiety.
Always stay upbeat and never let your child see that you are sad to leave them. Reinforce a positive attitude by telling them how much fun they are going to have while you are gone. If you are sad your child can detect your sadness and this will increase their separation anxiety disorder.

The Day Care Benefit
You've heard all the nasty rumors about day care. Too many kids and too few caregivers. Lots of sneezing and wheezing. That little guy who's always grabbing your child's toy. Everyone's got a story. But you have to get back to work and you have no choice. What's a good parent to do?
Let's concentrate on the positive. There are plenty of benefits to sending your child to day care. If you consider some of these benefits, it will help you come to terms with your own decision, whether you have a choice or not. Once you understand, you'll feel you're helping your child grow into a well rounded, happy child instead of feeling guilty about sticking him in day care.
Babies need interaction with other children. It's never too early to start engaging your son in activities with other children, whether his own age, toddlers or older children. Learning to interact with other kids prepares your son for his first real school experience. Day care is a gentler environment, there are less rules and more flexibility than strict teachers may impose in school.
Children benefit from day care by learning self-control, how to get along with others, and how to share. They begin to learn all about friendship. Without day care, your daughter only knows you; you are her whole world. How scary would it be to get into school at age four or five and find out that Mom isn't there with her? Children benefit from day care by expanding their world to include people other than their parents.
Separation anxiety will be lessened (or not an issue at all) when your child enters school if she's been in day care. She's already used to being away from you for some time during the day. She's learned how to make new friends and can be content without your undivided attention. The transition from home to school is far less difficult for those who've experienced day care.
In addition to learning socialization skills, your son may also have the opportunity to learn some of the basics such as the alphabet and numbers, and he's always increasing his vocabulary. This pre-preschool learning environment gives your child an understanding of what will be expected of him once he enters kindergarten. He learns to sit and listen, and is able to accept the information that will be thrust upon him in school. He learns the value of teamwork and to respect the opinions and emotions of others. Entering school for the first time is challenging for all children, but those who have been in day care benefit by already having exposure to a classroom-like environment.
Once your daughter enters school, day care can help with homework. Some day care facilities even offer after-school extracurricular activities like scout meetings, dance class, martial arts and on-site gymnastics instruction. Once she is in school her horizons begin to broaden.
As you can see, there are many benefits to placing your child in a licensed, qualified day care situation. And remember that even though your child is away from you for a portion of his day, it is really the parents that make the most difference in his life.
When he gets home from day care after spending a long day away from you, he will be bursting to tell you all about his day. Ask him questions about his friends, his teachers, his subjects. He will share his day with you no matter what his age is, and getting him to vividly describe his day is exciting to a child especially if you show interest. Of course you're interested, aren't you? After all, this child, a mini version of yourself, is taking on the world one day at a time, and the choices and desires he has will be a direct reflection of you. Make the most of that opportunity while you can - children are only children once.

Separation anxiety..? Daycare?
I'll be going back to work the first of May (my little guy will be 11 months). He's a bit of a "Momma's boy" (Daddy's boy too I guess). He's only been around a couple other little babies and is generally fine with strangers as long as he's in either my arms or his Daddy's arms. If he's not in our arms and someone comes up to him quickly, he cries. Sometimes he cries when I leave the room too. I guess I'm just looking for some stories from Moms who have gone back to work and had to leave their little one in daycare. Did your little one cry when you left him? If so, for how long? Are there any ways to help him get over it, or to help prepare him for it now? Thanks Moms!
**EDIT - Yahoo Answers wanted to put this in "Toddler and Preschool"... please tell me my little man is not a toddler yet!! haha He's still my little baby!
lol my little girl is a walking kinda talking 14month old...when shes 5 shell still be my baby!:))) haha
i started my little one in daycare at 9 months and she was fine. by 11 months she was pretty much waving me off while i was standing there like a wreck haha. as shes gotten older she will somedays cling to my legs, cry etc etc but i go in earlier the following day and spend some time with her and then when shes got her bearings i leave. ask your daycare provider if you can do this, it will make you both feel better you and your boy:)
he may cry and scream and want his mom but in my experience as soon the door closes behind me my daughter is fine laughing and playing lol ohi feel so wanted ....haha

Dog Separation Anxiety - 3 Common Problems in anxious Dogs
Separation anxiety in dogs is extremely common reason for dogs to be anxious. The symptoms of anxiety can be so severe that dogs are sent to shelters. While every dog is different, and displays their anxiety in a different way, the following are 3 symptoms of dog separation anxiety
Over Excitement:
When you get home, watch your dogs behavior. Look for actions like jumping up on you, licking you, and greeting you excessively. Excessive and prolonged greetings are a common symptom of separation anxiety in dogs. The greeting is not normal and calm, it is frantic and uncontrolled. Your dog thought you would never return, so they are not just saying 'Hi', they are thrilled to be reunited with you.
Digging, Scratching, Chewing:
The next level of separation anxiety is when a dog moves beyond barking and starts get physical. This type of scratching chewing and digging is an attempt to escape from the confines of the room, house, or yard so that they can find you. I call this "barrier anxiety". Some dogs will be so anxious and compulsive that they will injure themselves by breaking through glass, tearing down walls, and otherwise injure you or your property to get to you.
Barking and Whining:
Your dog barking when you leave, and while you are gone, is one of the most common symptoms of a dogs with a moderate level of separation anxiety. Typically, your dog will already be showing signs of anxiety before you leave. As the anxiety level increases, this may change to whining, then barking. Your dogs barks sometimes become high-pitched yelps. They are truly in a panic because they think that you are not coming back and need to be with you. This is a huge problem if live in a condominium or apartment
Not all dogs display these behaviors, some display mild symptoms such as whining, others will destroy a room that they are left in until you return. Separation anxiety is a serious condition and robs both you and your dog of a healthy relationship.

How To Train A Dog Not To Bark
One of the most common questions dog owners are forced to address is how to train a dog not to bark.
Dogs love to bark. It's a perfectly natural thing for your dog to do, just as it's normal for
us humans to speak.
It's when our dogs bark excessively that it becomes a problem for all concerned - including
our neighbours.
Considering this, our goal isn't to to stop our dogs from barking, but rather how to control the excessive barking.
There are of course situations when we want our dogs to bark (and I guess there are also times when I like my chatty aunty to speak!;)
training our dogs to stop or at least reduce their barking habit can be a very difficult task.
The first step in modifying this problem is to determine the reason why your dog is barking
in the first place. Once you've identified the cause or trigger, you can then plan your
training solution.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
- To express their needs (being bossy).
- Some dogs are bred to bark (some terriers and hounds).
- They are staking out their territory.
- To alert other members of their pack (that's you and your family) of impending danger.
- When playing, just through sheer excitement.
- Barking at other animals. Depending on where you are in the world, it could be squirrels
or any other small animal.
- If they are isolated.
- Some dogs bark excessively when seperated from their pack (you and your family).
- If they are trapped behind some type of barrier like a fence or window.
- Just for fun!
- To express dominance (puppies normally test you out at some stage with a display of
dominance barking).
- They bark because their owners have inadvertently rewarded excessive barking in the past
(this is crucial to understand).
- Through boredom or a lack of physical and mental stimulation.
- May feel stressed or uncomfortable for some reason. Things like feeling threatened or if
they don't have an appropriate place to sleep can cause excessive barking problems.
- Dogs that haven't been properly socialized often become nuisance barkers.
- May be looking for a response or some attention from their pack.
Another thing to keep in mind is that even though it may appear to you that your dog is
barking at nothing, this is not necessarily the case. This is due to the fact that your dog
has a much more acute sense of hearing, smell and sight than us humans. Your dogs excessive barking is probably being triggered by something.
How To Stop Your Dog From Barking
Ok, now we've sorted out the reason for your dogs barking problem, we can put some training
techniques in place to control it.
The most important piece of advice to remember when trying to modify any dog behavioral
problem, is to clearly communicate to your dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.
One of the biggest mistakes us dog owners make is to inadvertently reward our dogs excessive barking. We actually encourage and reinforce the barking problem when we commit these three dog training sins:
- Yell and scream at the dog, this just gives them the attention they were crying out for.
- Let them inside. If your dog is barking his head off outside, then you let him in, this
just rewards the barking.
- If your dog is barking and you react by giving him a comforting cuddle or a treat of some sort, you are definately encouraging your dog to bark again. By doing this you are communicating to your dog that you are happy with him. You should be making it clear that his excessive barking is inappropriate.
Right, lets get stuck into some proven techniques to stop your dog from barking. I've listed
the most common reasons why your dog may be barking, and some suggested solutions you can try.
Dog Goes Crazy Every Time The Phone Rings
This is a very common and annoying time for dogs to bark excessively. Try these training
techniques:
- Never yell at your dog.
- Get your dog used to the phone ringing, don't make it such a big deal. Ring your home number from your cell phone or get a friend to keep calling you. When the phone rings just sit there, don't say or do a thing. Repeat this process over a few days, your dog will probably continue to bark for a while but will give up before long.
- If you give your dog basic obedience training, behavioral problems such as excessive barking are easily controlled. Your dog looks up to you as their pack leader and is eager to please you in any situation. Teaching the Quiet! or Stop! obedience training command will soon correct nuisance barking problems.
- You may have some success by changing the tone and volume of your ring tone.
Dog Barks When You Are Not Home
I'm not going to pretend this type of barking will be easy for you to control, because in
reality it is often a difficult and lengthy process.
Always remember that dogs are social creatures, when they are seperated from their pack (you) they can become stressed and frustrated. This type of excessive barking is often caused by seperation anxiety.
- Firstly I'd say just use your common sense and get these dog ownership basics right. Keep your dog well exercised (physical and mental) and provide fresh water, chewing toys and a nice comfortable place to sleep. You can also try to block your dogs view of the street or other distractions. Basically, make sure your dog is happy.
- If you know your dog has been barking while you have been away, you must ignore him for a while when you return home. I understand this is difficult for lots of owners, but otherwise your dog believes that his barking is the reason you came back home to him. Just go about your business for a little while when you get home, ignoring your dog. When your dog has settled down, you then initiate contact with him.
- This next method takes time and patience, but can be a very effective way to stop your
dog from barking. It's based on that important rule applicable to all training situations.
Praise or reward when your dog does something good, create a negative association when he does something bad. Leave the house as you normally would, but just hide somewhere nearby. When your dog starts to bark spray him with water or throw a tin can full of coins or rocks in his direction (this is the negative association). Try to keep out of your dogs sight while doing this if possible. Go and hide again, if he is quiet for a while, go in and reward his good behavior with some praise and maybe a treat. This process may need to be repeated over and over until you have broken the excessive barking habit.
- The above techniques have proven to be successful with my own dogs, but if they don't
work for you, maybe you could try a Citronella Collar. Again this method uses the power of negative association. Every time your dog barks, a fine mist of citronella is sprayed into the air. Most dogs hate the smell, and soon realise if they don't bark, the smell isn't there to bother them. If you have more than one dog this method is not a suitable solution.
Dog Barks For Attention Or To Demand Something
This is one excessive barking problem that can be corrected very quickly.
- If you establish yourself as the pack leader or alpha dog in your owner-dog relationship, this type of barking problem won't occur. You'll also form a strong bond with your dog based on trust and respect.
- Another effective method you can try to stop this attention barking is simply ignoring your dog. Your dog will probably become frustrated and bark alot initially, but once he realizes that it is not getting him anywhere, he will stop. This training method can be hard on the ears for a while!
Dog Barks At Passers By
Workers like the Postman and Delivery driver's are constantly being barked at throughout their day.
Your dog perceives these type of people as intruders or a threat to their territory. The dog then barks and every time he barks he is rewarded, as the intruder goes away. Your dog is then very pleased that he has averted this threat, which leads him to do it again and again. His behavior is reinforced and therefore this can be a difficult problem to turn around.
- If possible, you could try to block your dogs vision or access to the area where these
people pass by.
- Dog obedience training is the best solution to this type of excessive barking. Once you have your dog properly obedience trained, you will be able to communicate to him that this is unacceptable behavior.
- If your dog consistently barks at a particular person, you may need this person to help
modify your dogs behavior. Just say your dog gets really agitated each time the postman
arrives. Have a chat to your postman and give him some of your dogs very favorite treats. Each time he delivers to your house, he can also deliver a tasty treat to your dog. In your dogs mind the postman goes from being a threat, to a welcome guest.
How To Train A Dog Not To Bark
In extreme cases of excessive barking, where all else has failed, some people advocate
debarking surgery. I've never needed to go down this path with any of my dogs, and don't think I ever would. But if you have come to the end of the line and think you have run out of options, you could discuss debarking surgery with your Veterinarian.
Good luck in trying to control your dog's excessive barking. If you consistently apply the above training techniques and add a little patience, you should have your dog under control before long.
How do you stop a husky puppy with seperation anxiety?
I have a nine week old husky that I've had for about a week and a half. I'm starting to crate train and she is doing.. Alright. but sometimes during the night she will cry, and some nights she won't at all. I'm not sure if she's crying because she's alone or because she has to go outside. If I leave her outside on a leash (I'll have my fense back up this week, was redoing patio) she will cry if she's by herself and it's the same when I leave her to go into the basement to do a load of laundry. Now I work 8hrs a day and I work outside and stop home every 2hrs to let her out of her crate (doing this until I trust her not to poo/pee in the house). But what should I do to ease her out of this or will this go away on it's own?
That's NOT a HUMAN psychological problem!

Has any other mother of a 2 year old faced "seperation anxiety" of their toddler ? What is it like?
It's more of a guilt trip put on by a very smart child. My kids both did that when I left them at daycare, especially my son. His daycare teacher told me that he would stop the second I was out of sight. But I still felt like crap.

We are perhaps uniquely among the earth's creatures the worrying animal. We worry away our lives. By Lewis Thomas The Medusa and the Snail1979 Find out about Anxiety Dog Separation Training
Dog Behavior Training
At some point in time all of us dog owners need to administer some dog behavior training (or dog behavior modification).
There are loads of dog behavior problems, they can affect all dog breeds, at any time throughout the dogs life. I've listed some of the more common dog behavior problems below, and importantly some proven dog behavior training methods to correct them.
General Principles For Dog Behavior Training
- A great number of puppy and dog behavioral problems are a result of separation anxiety.
- Many behavior problems (such as barking, biting & digging) stem from a lack of communication, or miscommunication between you the owner and your dog. Simply put, your dog is not aware of what is expected of him/her (I'll just say him from now on to make it easier).
- Applying some proper obedience training at an early stage is a most effective technique to correct any behavior problems, and also to prevent any future problems. The fact that you are reading this article possibly means it is too late for this tip!
- Set boundaries of acceptable and unacceptable behavior for your dogs, and stick to them. Be consistent, make it simple for your dog:
- Be clear that you are always the alpha dog in your owner-dog relationship.
- Make it clear to him what is unacceptable behavior - every time.
- Make it clear to him what is acceptable behavior - every time.
- Even though it may seem as though your dog is behaving poorly to spite you or annoy you this is not the case. In the vast majority of problem behavior cases there will be a cause or trigger which sparks the behavior. Identifying these triggers is the crucial first step towards solving the problem.
- Be careful you are not inadvertently rewarding the behavior you are trying to eliminate. An example of this would be if your dog is barking excessively outside, you then go to the door and call him inside. You're encouraging and rewarding the behavior, and he is sure to do it again.
It's a sad fact of life that the vast majority of dogs that end up in animal shelters (or worse) are because of a bad behavioral problem. It doesn't have to be this way, most problems (like aggression and destructive behavior) are at least manageable through proper dog behavior training.
If you repeatedly apply the proper training techniques, add some commitment and patience, you will achieve a positive result.
How to get dog to stop peeing from separation anxiety?
Our problem is this: Every time my husband and I leave the house our Welsh Corgi will pee on the rug and howl. He also has started doing this at night time. We will go to bed and then he will leave the bedroom where we are and pee on the office rug. Why? and how can we train him to stop this behavior? The only thing that's working for us now is to crate him while we are gone and to put a baby gate up at night in our bedroom so he can't go pee. We would like to not have to crate him when we leave for the rest of his life. Any info. would be greatly appreciated!
Forgot to add that he is potty trained otherwise. He will not do this behavior unless we leave or it's bedtime.
Also we will take him outside immediately before we leave or go to bed but he still manages to find pee in him to do this.
My dog does exactly the same thing. We just put him in a kennel when were not home. Eventually he grew into loving his kennel and he sleeps in there all night even with the door open
