Two specific neurotransmitters that seem to be connected with depression are norepinephrine and
serotonin. Cortisol, which is a hormone produced in the body, has also been linked to depression and often, too much cortisol is found in people who are suffering from depression.

Depression is a serious problem and no matter what is causing depression in your life or in the life of someone you love, it is important that you get professional help. Do certain birth control pills cause depression?

Last fall, I changed from Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo to Trinessa. My insurance company stopped covering the first type so I had no choice. I don't want to go off because I am sexually active. I have noticed that my mood has changed since being on the new pills. I feel depressed mostly, very fatigued, etc. I have gained a little weight as well. Has anyone experienced this with Trinessa? Helpful comments only please!

I was on Yasmin for about 6 months and had to switch to a pill with lower estrogen in it because I was feeling just that same way! Every night, right when I took my pill I felt really depressed and I have never experienced depression before, or such terrible fatigue until being on the pill, so I have recently switched to Alesse and I already feel such an improvement! You should check the information that comes with the pills though, I know with Yasmin it did in fact say it may cause depression, and from research I have done on birth control pills it is a side effect for many, you should definitely talk to your doctor about it! It has made a great difference for me =D

Vicodin is a depressant in and of itself. It works on brain chemicals to suppress reactions to pain which also suppresses reactions to pleasure as well. Since it has such a psychological effect on people it is alot like marijuana use...once you are used to being on Vicodin or marijuana, the world seems to suck alot more when you are not taking it because your brain is more alert and responsive to every little thing.

i just don't know i had always been a somewhat hyper child then mellowed out in my teenage years. but now i don't know i just fell empty inside, i either eat too much or nothing at all, and feel tired lately and recently i've been crying...usually i don't even cry i just keep it all inside...or is that my problem? my friends and family members keep asking me if im all right because it seems somethings the matter or im upset but i don't now what to say cuz i think im acting my normal self. is it true that depression can be hereditary? help me understand!

In North America, an estimated 50-60 percent of the population is affected by winter depression. There a wide spectrum of symptoms that arise from a change in sleeping habits and weight gain, the majority of suicidal thoughts and results unfortunate. Think of it this way - fully half of the people you know are somewhat depressed in the winter!

Winter depression is very common in parts somewhat north (or south) of the equator. People who live near the equator have a very low incidence of depression winter. Why? Simple. They live where there is sufficient daylight hours to avoid triggering the hormone imbalance that causes depression. Now, please note that I did not say that people spend close to the equator more time sunbathing than northerners. He has not matter that they have a better suntan. Instead, it is the length of the day that counts.

Again, this is the time of the day, no time! This fact of winter depression which led to the name Seasonal Affective Disorder. People who live in northern climates suffer because of the shortened season days. Just as trees lose their leaves when the days shorten, people lose their happiness. People who live where the days are shorter seasonally are victims of the chemical reaction of the brain unless the daylight hours.

So, understanding that this is not your fault, what can you do?

First, start now on a plan to extend the hours of daylight in your day using light therapy. Light therapy is the treatment of depression the most effective known. Just a small bank of lights and the time to sit near them for a couple of hours each day.

The lights are the easy part. Get the cheapest unit you can find that will hold four foot long bulbs fluorescent. Mine has four bulbs. Buy the best "grow" lights. The kind that is best for plants. They are closest to the spectrum of sunlight. Do not use standard fluorescent bulbs. They are too green and actually drain energy from you.

Research has shown that the best time to treat your winter depression with light therapy is in the morning. It is best to make your first task of the day. In addition, it will give you some quiet time alone to read some uplifting material. It never hurts to get positive input!

Reduce stress by sticking to a daily routine. Go to bed on time so that you can do your light therapy in the morning. Try to avoid to piss the world. Get to work early and plan your day. Make a list of things to do and check them off as you accomplish them. Save difficult projects for when you're not the fight against winter depression.

Then, decide that the time will not affect your mood. You can not change time, so why be upset? If the weather is bad, allow a little more time to go to work. It's simple, is not it? Accepting and move forward.

Then, improve your health. Eat a little less. Eat healthy foods. Exercise a little. Go for a walk. Did you know that is almost impossible to think bad thoughts while walking briskly? Drink water! The vitamin that people lack the most is the water old flat.

Last, do not give up on yourself. If you feel sick, screaming for help! Talk to someone. Nearest you need to know how you feel. Tell them. If you can not talk to your family or a friend, go see your doctor. Go for a walk in clinic and a nurse, a psychologist - somebody! And please, unless you're completely overwhelmed, do not take antidepressants. Yes, they will help you if you are suicidal, but the long term side affects the spirit of these psychotropic substances are extreme and not good for your health overall.

In summary, here are seven things you can do now to overcome your winter blues:

1) Make or a light box. Use it in the morning. One to two hours each day.

2) Reduce your stress by having a daily routine.

3) Get enough sleep. Go to bed early so you can get up early and sunbathe in front of your lights.

4) Decide that the time will not affect your mood.

5 Healthy Eating). Exercise. Drink plenty of water.

6) Talk about what you feel. Remember, 50% of people feel as you do, one way or another.

7) No matter how it is bad, wait! It will get better.

Alcohol Detox Can Kill You. Here's Why

We often underestimate the health risks of alcohol abuse. Because it is a legal substance--and heavily promoted--we rarely put alcohol abuse into the same mental category as with drugs such as cocaine or heroin. Although you won't ever go to jail for possession, the health risks are just as great if not greater, and few other drugs can match alcohol for the health risks associated with detox.

With increasing use and abuse comes tolerance and addiction. Physical addiction to alcohol occurs as your brain attempts to equalize from the constant flood of depressive chemicals, and to do so actually changes the flow of certain neurotransmitters.

The brain likes things to stay the same, and when you continually add a depressive like alcohol. It responds by increasing the sensitivity to certain excitatory neurotransmitters, most notably GABA. As long as you continue to consume alcohol, and as a result depress brain activity levels, all is fine (except for the hundreds of other health deficits accompanying alcohol abuse) but should you ever stop drinking, the brain is suddenly lacking in the near continual presence of the depressant chemical, and because it has been "rewired" to be extra sensitive to excitatory neurotransmitters, without anything slowing it down, it races ahead.

Understanding Alcohol Detox

This racing brain presents with symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, vomiting, shakes, hallucination, seizures and convulsions and a possibility of heart stoppage. There are few drugs that resent with a detox as dangerous as alcohol.

Treatment

Fortunately, the symptoms of alcohol detox, at least in the acute and dangerous period, can be easily managed with the use of certain prescription medications. Through drugs such as benzodiazepines, which slow the brain down to safe levels, the symptoms are managed, and detox can proceed in safety, and in relative comfort.

No one with a serious history of alcohol abuse and addiction should attempt to detox off of alcohol without medical supervision. The health risks of an unmanaged detox are high, and the discomfort and anxiety of such a detox very unpleasant, there is no reason to endure such a dangerous and painful few days.

The worst of detox symptoms end in a few days, and although long term symptoms of withdrawal may continue for months, after 3 or 4 days the danger period has passed, and recovering alcoholics are now ready to participate and benefit from therapies of recovery.

Don’t risk it trying to detox on your own.

Defined: Depression is a debilitating state that has a negative impact on a person’s mood, and a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities.   A depressed person will describe their mood as sad or empty, and sometimes he or she becomes irritable easily.  Some other characteristics are weight loss, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, low energy level, feeling worthless, difficulty concentrating and suicidal feelings.  This last factor is the reason why depression must be treated and addressed.  Depression can create a hopelessness that is so severe that it could lead to death.  Don’t ignore it, get help as soon as possible.  Depression often occurs following a significant loss, or a major life change.  It also occurs when a person feels stuck in a particular area of their life, such as stuck in a job, a relationship, or an illness.

Treatment: Is depression treatable?  Absolutely Yes! With proper treatment, 80% to 90% of depressed people are able to move out of the depression.  The most common treatment is medication.  I advise individuals to investigate this option very thoroughly before making a decision for medication.  There are multiple side effects from anti-depressant medication.  It is considered the quick fix, yet like most quick fixes, it is not always a magic bullet.  Many people jump in without properly investigating the pros and cons of the medication.  The medicine deals with the symptom, and does not address the root cause of the depression.  Professional counseling has been very effective in treating depression.  A good therapist will help you identify the root cause of the depression, and teach you skills to come out of the debilitating mood.  The old cliché stands true, “What is not talked out is acted out.”  Talk out the depression and it will stop being acted out in your life.  Some say that this is too easy, yet it has been proven to work over and over again.

How long does Treatment Last: This depends on the severity of the depression.  Sometimes a major life event causes an episode of depression, and the event must be worked through with a good counselor.  Sometimes the event is a trigger that surfaces many other unresolved experiences, and this therapy process will take a longer to resolve.  For example, the breakup of a relationship may bring up the grief of some others relationship failures that were never resolved.  It’s as if the pain of the broken relationship becomes magnetized to the other break ups, and all the pain surfaces at one time.  A good professional counselor will help you make the connections, and break free from the sadness.

Conclusion: There is hope for depression.  You must deal with the root of the problem, and not just the symptom, to break free.  Find a good Professional Counselor or Therapist, and your investment in yourself will reap valuable rewards in your quality of life.

Any suggestions to fight depression on your own?

I've been having a real hard time lately it's been over a month now, and a few days ago i unintentionally read an article that explains depression and all the symptoms fit perfectly. Now that i discovered my situation i want to take action and fix it. I want to be able to enjoy life like i used to, it's not fair that my brain denies me this pleasure when i have everything to prosper. Sadly I cannot afford a doctor/teraphist or medication at the moment. So i was wondering if there is anything i can do on my own to improve my state instead of making it worse until i can afford paying a teraphist.

There's a great book out called "Real Magic" by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer that you may be able to get some useful ideas from. He teaches you how to be happy, healthy, successful and prosperous in daily life through positive thinking and action. I studied this book and found it very helpful in overcoming depression.

I am very fortunate to be receiving treatment and medication and my depression is in remission for 4 years now. Good Luck to you!

You would be amazed at the number of people in all professions that are on anti depressants. Doctors, Lawyers, Police, Corrections Officers, Nurses, Surgeons, and every other profession you can possibly think of.

I am on anti depressants and currently work as a counselor. Before that I worked with Level 3 Sex Offenders and Murderers coming out of prison. I had to be drug tested for both jobs and the anti depressants never even showed up!

10 Signs That your Brain Chemistry is Out of Balance

Your brain chemistry drives you ? your energy levels, your moods, your thoughts, actions, behaviors, your beliefs, your desires, dreams, and motivations. And in turn these all drive your brain chemistry.

Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, create and reflect your feelings moods, thoughts and behaviors. They are a powerful group of chemicals in the brain that result in physiological and psychological changes in how we experience our lives. All behavior has a corresponding chemical pattern in the brain.

Your behaviors and your experience affect your biochemical profile and your biochemical profile affects your behaviors and your experience. By picking up on the yellow flags that tell you when your brain chemistry is out of balance you can take specific steps to put your self back "at choice" and in charge again.

Here is how you will know that an out of balance brain chemistry is driving your behaviors.

1. You are not happy.

Contentment, happiness, appreciation are emotions not readily available to an out of balanced brain. Practicing appreciation, gratitude and forgiveness can promote optimal brain chemistry.

2. You are stressed.

A neurochemically imbalanced body is stressed ? it is tired and listless, its mind is dull and foggy, it is weak, and it suffers more than it needs to.

3. You do not have insight.

An out of balance brain misperceives. And it misperceives in the direction of the imbalance. It does not have access to accurate perceptions. Because an out of balance brain misperceives it does not have access to insight.

4. You are driven to certain behaviors.

When your brain chemistry is out of balance, you are driven into unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors. You unwittingly begin to engage in activities, behaviors, and lifestyles that create neurochemical chaos in your body. You are not "at choice" - you are not choosing deliberate considered action.

5. You do things that you do not want to do but feel good to you in the short term.

When your brain is out of balance it drives you to behaviors that will keep it out of balance. It seeks its own imbalanced baseline.

6. It feels good to continue doing the same old things that you want to change.

When you seek to establish a new baseline brain chemistry that supports a change you want to make, there are numerous physiological feedback loops that act to keep it at the old baseline. It will feel uncomfortable to change these physiological feedback loops.

The behaviors that keep you out of balance will feel good in the moment even though you may not want to be doing them.

7. You rely on what "feels good" to you as your guide to behavior.

When you have out of balance brain chemistry you can not rely on what feels good to you as your guide for what you should be doing, feeling, thinking, experiencing. You must take deliberate conscious actions that are designed specifically to bring your brain chemistry back into balance.

8. You do not recognize the need to choose a deliberate action designed to balance your brain chemistry.

When you are driven to a behavior, thought, feeling or experience, that is exactly the time that you need not to do it because it will drive you further out of balance. An out of balance brain drives your behaviors and experience in the direction of the imbalance.

9. You believe that you can override your biology.

You alter your brain chemistry, manipulate your neurochemical profile and affect your body?s physiology every day by what you do and don?t eat or think, and how and where you spend your time.

Through your daily behaviors and the environments you create your biochemical profile and this is reflected in the emotions, energy, thoughts, actions, and psychological states that either bring you to peak performance or that block your best functioning. Neurochemicals are not the essence of who we are but they are the physiological brakes or fuel for the fullest expression of the essence of who you are.

10. You think that you cannot change.

You need 3-6 weeks of consistent action to begin to see some noticeable results in your behavior changes. However, the brain seeks to return to the old baseline for about 3-6 months. So when you do not follow through with your changed behavior, the brain will gravitate back to the original unbalanced baseline.

It takes 6-12 months of compliance with the new behavior to affect the enzymatic changes that change the brain chemistry baseline. When the baseline brain chemistry changes you are less subject to day to day drastic swings. The new behaviors that keep an optimal brain chemistry for you then become part of what you naturally do.

You can develop the knowledge, power, and technology to craft your inner and outer worlds in order to overcome the stress, resistance, and friction in them. Through your daily behaviors and the environments in which you spend your time you can create the emotions, energy, thoughts, actions, and psychological states that you want.

You can choose to promote clarity, focus, peace, excitement or you can contribute to confusion, depression, anxiety, and conflict within yourself. The degree to which you have one or the other of these experiences is the degree to which you are in harmony with your body?s physiology or in conflict with it. How close are you to a balanced neurochemistry is the degree to which you will experience peak performance.

Take the time and effort to design and live a life that fosters your optimal brain chemistry. Open the way for optimal development of your personal resources, talents, and dreams.

Doctors do you think Depression?

is REALLY a chemical imbalance? If that is the case, then how does a stressful event change brain chemistry? Most depressions are caused by a stressful event.

There are definite changes in the way the brain works when a person is depressed:

1. Modern brain scans that can look at how 'hard' the brain is working have shown that some areas of the brain (such as at the front) are not working as well as normal.

2. Depressed patients have higher than normal levels of stress hormones.

3. Various chemical systems in the brain may not be working correctly including one known as the serotonin or 5-HT system.

Antidepressants may help to reverse these changes. Unfortunately there is no brain scan or blood test that can be used to diagnose when a person has a depressive illness. The diagnosis can only be made from the symptoms. Generally speaking a diagnosis of depression will be made if a person has a persistently low mood that significantly influences their everyday life and has been present for two weeks or more, and there are also three or four or more other symptoms of depression.

Stress can lead to you to feeling 'down' and 'miserable'. What is different about a depressive illness is that these feelings last for weeks or months, rather than days. In addition to feeling low most or all of the time, many other symptoms can occur in depressive illness (though not everybody has every one). These include:

-Being unable to gain pleasure from activities that normally would be pleasurable.
-Losing interest in normal activities, hobbies and everyday life.
-Feeling tired all of the time and having no energy.
-Difficulty sleeping or waking early in the morning (though some feel that they can't get out of bed and 'face the world').
-Having a poor appetite, no interest in food and losing weight (though some people overeat and put on weight - 'comfort eating').
-Losing interest in sex.
-Finding it difficult to concentrate and think straight.
-Feeling restless, tense and anxious.
-Being irritable.
-Losing self-confidence.
-Avoiding other people.
-Finding it harder than usual to make decisions.
-Feeling useless and inadequate - 'a waste of space'.
-Feeling guilty about who you are and what you have done.
-Feeling hopeless - that nothing will make things better.
-Thinking about suicide - this is very common. If you feel this way, talk to somebody about it. If you think somebody else might be thinking this way, ask them about it - IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

What causes depression?

-We do not fully understand the causes of depression.
-Genes or early life experiences may make some people vulnerable.
-Stressful life events, such as losing a job or a relationship ending, may trigger an episode of depression.
-Depression can be triggered by some physical illnesses, drug treatments and recreational drugs.
