Just discovered I am pregnant aged 40. Had son 16 years ago and have had severe depression since. Had two ectopic pregnancies and only have one ovary have had a miscarraige and a termination after having been raped. Have just come out of an abusive relationship and was in a hostel for six months. Want this baby but scared I will get post natal depression again. I am only about four weeks and it has not been confirmed - Home test was positive though. Had a bit of bleeding during the night. Would welcome some advice about bleeding, post natal depression second time and how to be positive and also my age.

The teenage years are already difficult, with emotional, physical, and hormonal changes that often cause confusion and anxiety. These years are so tumultuous that signs of depression can often be mistaken for normal teenage angst or moodiness. For many parents, it’s not easy to recognize the signs of depression in teens. But depression affects up to one in eight teens. Learning how to recognize the signs of teen depression is crucial for parents. Untreated depression can cause serious problems for teens and their families. Take a look at some of the indications and warning signs to look for in your teen.

Causes of Teen Depression

Causes of teen depression are similar to the causes of adult depression. When looking for signs of the condition, it’s important to consider what kinds of factors might be triggering your teen’s depression. Taking note of possible risk factors makes it easier to pick up on any signs of depression that might develop.

Major life events such as the death of a family member or friend, or the separation or divorce of parents may trigger depression. Certain medical conditions, particularly those that affect hormones, can also cause depression in teens. Substance abuse; poverty; physical; emotional or sexual abuse and violence can all set off teen depression. Genetics plays a role too, as children with family members who have suffered from depression are more susceptible to becoming depressed themselves.

Signs of Teen Depression

Teen depression was particularly difficult to diagnose in the past. Teenagers are less likely than adults to articulate their feelings — and this means it’s more difficult for adults to recognize when teens are feeling depressed. A teenager who is at risk of depression will likely show signs of at least five of the following symptoms for two weeks or longer:

If you notice these signs, call a suicide hotline, mental health worker or family doctor. Talk to your teen. Do not ignore these warning signs:

Worsening depression

Sudden emotional change from sadness to being calm or happy

Talking about suicide or death, or talking about being worthless or hopeless

Loss of interest in things the teen once cared about, such as hobbies and other activities

Giving away treasured possessions, writing goodbye letters, or writing a will

Teen Depression Diagnosis and Management

While there are no medical tests used to diagnose teen depression, doctors and mental health professionals are able to identify the condition by talking to the teen and perhaps family members or teachers. Based on a psychological evaluation, a doctor can assess the severity of the teen’s depression and determine if he or she may be at risk of attempting suicide.

During the diagnostic process, a doctor will probably also look for signs of any other mental health problems such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, or anxiety disorder, which might exacerbate depressive symptoms.

Treating teenage depression usually involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Antidepressants may help to restore disrupted brain chemistry to normal levels, while psychotherapy provides the teen with an outlet to talk about his or her feelings and behavior in a non-confrontational and nonjudgmental setting. It is particularly important that these two modes of therapy are combined, to give the teen a chance to articulate feelings or talk about life events that may have triggered the depression.

Parents can help their teens by allowing them some breathing room, even though their instinct may be to take care of them or force them to talk about what’s bothering them. Still, without being overbearing, it’s important to make yourself available to your teen if he or she does want to talk. A depressed teen will often respond more positively to a third party such as a psychotherapist, than they will to a parent, but it’s important to try to establish open lines of communication.

how can I get a thourough psychiatric examination? I cannot get a diagnosis that satisfies all of my criteria.

I have been treated, usually for major depression, severe, for twelve years. I've been on antidepressents, antipsychotics, moodstabilizers, ritalin, etc. I've been hospitalized four times. There is discrepency over what my exact diagnosis is because my symptoms do not match any specific disorder. I have depression that is neither mild (like dystymia) nor fluctuating in recurrances and relapses (like major depression.) It is constant. I also have obsessive compulsive personality disorder, add, anxiety that doesn't fit any of the usual classifications (every few years, for example, I will become terrified that someone is in my house. It is a crippling, agonizing fear, yet I realize that there is no reason I should think this.) I.Q. tests indicate I should do very well in school, but I cannot pass any class except those in English, particularly writing classes. In addition, I have very bizarre patterns of thought, but they are not incredible enough to be called a "thought disorder."

Why do you feel that you need to have a label to be properly treated? A good psychologist or psychiatrist will take all of your symptoms into consideration, not just your diagnosis.
Have you had a previous psychiatric evaluation? If so, what did it entail? Was it just a clinical interview or testing too?

Canadian Scientists Discover Gene for Depression

Canadian scientists have identified a gene that makes some people susceptible to major depressive disorders. speaking at the Forum of European Neuroscience today (9 July), Professor Nicholas Barden explained, "This is a major breakthrough in the realm of psychiatry and will have groundbreaking implications for diagnosis and the development of new anti-depressant treatment."

It has been known for many years that genetic factors are at the base of depression and bipolar disorder, but the complex molecular networks involved remain unknown. "The actual gene, known as P2RX7, is found in humans and animals and is responsible for depression. It has taken many years to find," said neuroscientist, Professor Barden from CHUL Research Centre in Quebec. Finding it is highly significant in uncovering the molecular pathways involved in depression. The results were published in May 2006 American Journal of Medical Genetics*

During their lifetime, about 5-12% of men and 10-25% of women will experience at least one episode of major depression. People with bipolar disorder – also known as manic depression – experience extreme mood swings. The total social cost of depressive disorders is estimated to be billions of dollars per year. By 2020, depression is expected to rank first in disease burden in economically developed countries.

Depression has until now often been associated with the serotonin system in the brain, a system that can influence mood and emotion. "What is particularly exciting is that P2RX7 has nothing to do with serotonin," said Professor Barden. drugs that boost the flow of serotonin can be effective anti-depressants, but take weeks to take effect. The fact that P2RX7 that has nothing to do with serotonin could partly explain why.

Animal studies have shown that this gene is expressed in brain areas known to be involved in depression, and depressive-like behaviour in mice could be reversed by treatment with drugs that stimulate P2RX7.

P2RX7 also plays an important role in the brain's response to inflammation, which is known to be part of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Additionally, stress hormones decrease the activity of this gene, suggesting a mechanism for the onset of depression following severe stress.

"A person may have the mutated gene, but its 'default setting' means that they may not develop depression. We don't yet know how P2RX7 works and we still believe that a multitude of genes feed into the same pathway that may induce depression," said Professor Barden.

The identification of the gene means that anti-depressants in the future could target the gene directly. With anti-depressants currently targeting the serotonin system, P2RX7 is bypassed to an extent. In animal studies, activators of P2RX7 have an immediate anti-depressant action, giving hope that new anti-depressant medication, with a new mechanism of action, can be developed.

Some kids seem much more restrained than others, less likely to be the center of attention or the life of the party. Treating them like they can't do things for themselves or that they're somehow different just prepetuates the depressed feelings. Instead, let them know that you are there for them if they need to talk. Be supportive, not too pushy, and learn more about depression and it's symptoms and effects. The more you know, the easier it is for you to understand what that person is dealing with.

Exhibiting symptoms of depression is not unusual for teens, given all the stresses and confusions they have in their young lives. If the teen becomes very withdrawn, spends most of their time in bed, stops eating, or ever tries to harm themselves than I would see a mental health professional. For many teens, becoming more withdrawn from family is not unusal since they are trying to form their own identity. It can be hard for some kids to make friends, and to deal with not being well liked they act as if it doesn't matter what anyone thinks and they just stop dealing with people. If you think that your teen may be depressed, talk with them and find out why they're not showing much interest in friends. They may just get teased and ridiculed at school and don't feel like anyone wants to be their friend. If your teen is honest with you, you'll be able to see if they exhibit the symtpoms of depression. Take them to a mental health profession to get diagonsed.

Mental Depression and Nutritional Deficiency

Your mental depression may be related to your diet, in particular, your nutritional deficiency.

Mental depression and many autoimmune problems are chemically and environmentally related. Specifically, your mental depression may be due to the chemicals in your foods and the environment, which upset the normal functioning of neurotransmitters, resulting in imbalance of brain chemicals.

Unfortunately, many people with mild depression simply ignore their mental disorder, thinking their depressive episodes are no more than "seasonal blues"; while those with major depression are more likely to look upon medications as their "magic bullet."

Of course, mental depression, which is a complex mental illness, may be due to many factors. However, one common cause of mental depression is diet. Nutritional deficiency may play a pivotal role in manipulating the chemicals in your brain, which are implicated in different types of depression.

To illustrate, magnesium deficiency is prevalent among the Americans. Why is that? Due to lack of funding to support studies in this seemingly unprofitable area of research, there have not been many studies on the impact of magnesium deficiency on the American health.

Magnesium deficiency is responsible for many health problems, including allergies, panic attacks, cardiovascular disease, hypertension in children, and premenstrual syndrome. In particular, those individuals who are low in magnesium tend to be more likely to have emotional problems. If your brain chemistry is balanced, you can handle almost any type of stress. If not, then stress can exacerbate your emotional problems to the breaking point.

Physical symptoms of magnesium deficiency include twitches, cramps, muscle tension, muscle soreness, backaches, neck pain, constipation, urinary spasms, menstrual cramps, and difficulty in swallowing. Other common mental symptoms are insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity and restlessness with constant movement, panic attacks, and premenstrual irritability. If you sigh a great deal, or have frequent headaches, you may be deficient in magnesium too.

Magnesium deficiency plays a critical role in mental depression. All chemical reactions in the body require an enzyme system to initiate the biochemical reaction, and magnesium is a critical co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body. In addition, magnesium is responsible for neurotransmission abnormalities - the precursors of different types of mental disorders.

To reverse magnesium or nutritional deficiency, you need to change your diet. Magnesium is a youth-preserving mineral. As you age, your magnesium level declines due to poor absorption and inadequate diet. Two-thirds of elderly Americans eat less than 75 percent of the RDA for magnesium, and only 25 percent of Americans meet the RDA for magnesium.

Magnesium is found in whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

If necessary, take a supplement of 200-300 milligrams of magnesium. Given that you are living in a highly polluted environment, you should take a high dose of multi-vitamins and multi-minerals, and large doses of omega 3 fatty acids, if you are not consuming a great deal lot of fish, such as salmon.

Dr. James D. Gordon of Georgetown University School of Medicine recommends:

"Eliminate foods that are heavily processed and have been adulterated in any way with any kind of food additive, preservative, coloring, artificial flavoring, artificial sweetener. Aspartame has been shown to cause serious brain damage in animal. . ."

The rule of thumb, according to Dr. James Gordon, is simple: Eat whole foods. You were created to eat whole foods, not pop tarts.

If you think you can eat a whole food, and then a processed food occasionally, you will still be getting the nutrients from you whole food, think again! The chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics from a processed food may have significant long-term biological effects on your intestinal functioning, and thus preventing you from taking in nutrients from you whole food.

According to Dr. James Gordon, you should eliminate all types of sugar, except honey or rice syrup. Look at the concentrated sugar content in every Coke and other carbonated beverages that flood the consumer market. Remember, food manufacturers have everything to gain, and you have everything to lose, except your weight.

Your mental depression may be a diet-related mental disorder.

What can you add to your diet to avoid loss of nutrition and any "mental slips" while fasting on fluids?

I would like to fast on fluids but I do not want any mental slips like depression, paranoia, and I do not want to feel weak. Fasting is effective in weight loss for me it just has consequences that I would like to compromise. I intend on fasting until 25 more pounds are lost and doing stretches and areobics to maintain proper fuctions of my body, and at that point maintain the weight loss by starting a work out schedule but I was interested in "something or things" to add to my diet to avoid major nutrition loss without weight gain...

ok so I have a journal and everyday I write to my grandma who passed away 1 yr. ago september.
and I tell people not to look at it because she's the only one who I think really cared about me. well people decide not to listen to me and they read it and then start laughing and say " Nicole your so funny" or " Nicole your so dumb". and it hurts because while I'm writing to my grandma it makes me cry to think that I feel so stupid and that I'm gonna fail in life..
can someone please help me or give me some advice

I think the "Letters to Grandma" idea is an excellent idea.

From time to time, we all suffer from stress and anxiety, even depression. It may be work related, family problems or financial concerns. The stress caused by these worries can lead to health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, stroke and even obesity. Then we start to stress over our health problems. It's a vicious circle.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING ANTIDEPRESSANT drugs, BE CAREFUL.
All antidepressants work by manipulating the brain's use of serotonin, the chemical largely responsible for your mood. A study published in the British Medical Journal shows that the use of antidepressants can increase the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding for people over 65. And the newer types of antidepressants, called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors {SSRIs} are the worst offenders. These drugs can also cause nausea, headache, dry mouth, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and tremors.

YOUR OPTIONS.

These prescription drugs are NOT the only option for dealing with stress and depression. Studies have found that people respond just as well to natural therapies without the toxic side effects. According to Dr Michael Rosenbaum, author of "Energy For Life", a B complex supplement, along with vitamin C can make a big difference. He also recommends St John's Wort. Beware however of drug interactions with this herb. It can be effective for mild depression, but should NEVER be taken if you are on warfarin therapy or taking SSRIs. As with all changes in diet, you should FIRST discuss it with your family doctor.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER SUGGESTIONS.

OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS.

For a long time we've known that fish is healthy for you, but American nutritionist Joseph Hibbeln, claims that a fish diet can dramatically improve your state of mind, even cure depression. Mr Hibbeln, from the US National Institutes of Health, says the Omega 3 fats in fish influence our state of mind by altering one of our brain's key chemical messengers, serotonin. Lack of it is thought to be the cause of depression. His studies are confirmed by research at Harvard Medical School. Deep sea fish such as tuna, swordfish and salmon are 3
sources of Omega 3 fatty acids.

SEROTONIN RICH FOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS.

Other sources of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps to improve our sense of wellbeing, include: vitamin D { cod liver oil and sunshine}, sunflower seeds, bananas, turkey, avocados, mangoes, broccoli, almonds, vitamin B6 and the mineral magnesium. Camomile is a herb rich in magnesium and chamomile tea can be effective as a bedtime "relaxant". These "mood foods" are required to convert the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin.

KOREAN {PANAX} GINSENG.

Ginseng is a tonic herb renowned for its benefit in helping the body "adapt" to stress. As a balancer of body energies, it helps to relax and relieve stress as well as promote stamina.

VITAMIN B9 {FOLATE OR FOLIC ACID}

Studies with those suffering mild and major depression have shown low blood concentrations of the B vitamin nutrient folate. Sources of folate include: liver, asparagus, lentils, chick peas, beans, spinach and other leafy green vegetables.

SAMe

One of the most exciting breakthroughs in natural approaches to treating depression is SAMe. Naturally produced in the human body, it has largest concentrations in the liver, followed by the adrenal glands, heart, kidneys, lungs and brain. Healthy people naturally produce sufficient SAMe, but a deficiency in the blood can result in depression.

SAMe helps increase the blood levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, encouraging the brain cells to be more responsive to these "feel good" chemicals. This helps promote focus, concentration, calmness and mood elevation. It is also a liver tonic and may assist with arthritis pain. When taken as a supplement, make sure it includes the key nutrients vitamin B12 and folic acid to optimize natural SAMe production.

Real estate and economy uncertainty: Sell and rent?

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal had an article about Fannie May and Freddie Mac experiencing vulnerability due to the mortgage/housing market. The article quoted an analyst as saying, "We are seeing unprecedented foreclosures and declines in home prices not seen since the Great Depression."

For those who are blessed with great equity in their homes and the ability to pay their mortgages, should they be selling their homes? Do very prominent real estate experts expect a major depression that would affect not only the housing market as well as jobs? If so, it seems the only way to somewhat insulate oneself from a housing disaster would be to own your home outright, have virtually no equity (thereby no financial loss), or sell and rent.

What about those of us who don't have subprime loans, can pay our mortgages (in a relative stable economy) and don't want to sell? What are some of the well-known financial advisers like Suze Orman and others like "Wall Street" saying?

I am sorry but I don't follow your line of reasoning.

You don't have a housing disaster if you can pay your mortgage. It doesn't matter what prominent real estate experts say. If you have equity, can afford your payment why on earth would you sell and rent?

Do you have any idea how many 'renters' are getting notices that the landlord is in foreclosure and those renters are SOL?

Don't apply whats going on in a segment of our economy to yourself when it does not apply to you. While your value may fluxuate due to the market.......you are in a position to ride it out if you can make your payment. Many investors are just sitting on the sidelines waiting and alot are hanging out at foreclosure sales. Its a time to buy not sell.
Turn off your TV. Your getting freaked into thinking about stupid moves when you have no reason to be freaked out.

5 Post Natal Depression Busters for New Mothers

The joys of having a new baby can sometimes be overshadowed by post natal or post partum depression.  Post natal depression is commonly known as “the baby blues.”  It is said to be triggered by hormonal changes after a baby is born.  Its symptoms include depression, tearfulness, low self esteem, low self confidence, guilt feelings, insomnia, low appetite, low sex drive and in extreme cases, self destruction.

While serious bouts of depression may require appropriate medication under the guidance of a doctor, it is best to deal with post natal depression the natural way.  The following are stress busting tips that you, too, could use to battle the baby blues:

Start and maintain a gratitude journal. 

When you’re feeling blue, all you’ll want is to be by yourself.  This may be the best time to pull out a nice clean notebook and to start a journal.  Maintaining a journal is a time-tested practice that yields wondrous results for the author.  While you may use your journal for letting all your negative emotions out on writing, do make a conscious effort to cite the things that are positive in your life.  Happy thoughts can uplift your mood. 

Be thankful for the big or small things that make you happy.  They remind you that your current situation is just a small event in your life that will inevitably pass.  For every bad feeling that starts to creep in, battle it with a happy thought over something that you are thankful for.

Face your situation knowing that you shall be over the hump soon. 

The strain you are experiencing now is a result of major adjustments that must be made before things achieve a normal and stable state.  Mothers eventually get more hours of sleep as their babies learn to sleep through the night.  You, too, will gradually find more and more packets of free time to do some leisurely reading or catching up with old hobbies that you may have left behind. 

As your baby grows older, you will experience more joy in being able to play or talk with your baby.  Things will lighten up slowly at home after your adjustment period.  Life may never be the same again for us mothers, but we do get our lives back on track in time. 

Move your body. 

Moderate amounts of exercise are known to lift one’s mood.  When the body is set in motion, feel-good chemicals called “endorphins” are released into your system.  This is the reason why children who run around appear to be “hyper” or excited.  Cardiovascular or aerobic exercises are common ways to release endorphins and adrenaline.  Adrenaline is what makes your body feel energized.  A ten-minute routine can produce immediate effects

Try brisk-walking or hip-hop dancing.  Alternatively, there is the low-impact activity of stretching.  A few minutes of comfortable stretching from your shoulders to your feet contribute to a feeling of general well-being. 

Develop some circuit breakers

Circuit breakers are typically known as mechanical systems for damage control.  The same principle can be applied in a human situation.  Notice how bad luck may seem to come in a series of events?  The same holds true for stress.  A bad start in the morning somehow sets the trend for the rest of the day. Sometimes, being tired and feeling low prevent you from doing things right.  

If you feel that nothing seems to go your way today, stop right there and put on your circuit breaker.  Break a seemingly bad cycle by downshifting or dropping some errands in the meantime. 

Your set of circuit breakers should include easy things like stepping out to get some sunshine, reading a few pages of a good book, having a leisurely chat on the phone with a supportive friend, listening to your favorite music or having a bubble bath.  Everyone has her own set of circuit breakers.  Make a list of what works for you.  The short activities that you resort to once in a while may spell the difference between having a bad day and a good day. 

Try meditation

Meditation was originally practiced as a way of understanding the mystic forces of life.  Its earlier concepts were related to philosophy and even religion.  The states of bliss attained by its earlier proponents paved the way for the application of meditation as a stress-reduction technique. 

Nowadays, one does not have to be a yogi to practice meditation.  Anyone can meditate anywhere.  You can learn it under the guidance of a trained instructor or simply follow an instructional video at home. 

While not all mothers may experience post natal depression, getting the baby blues is not a sign of weakness nor should it be taken against you.  Post natal depression happens to the best of us.  Instead of wallowing in self pity and depression, deal with the blues by recognizing it when it strikes. 

If you follow the five self help measures regularly, you’ll get past this phase even before you realize it.  Until then, hang in there and remind yourself constantly that as in all life changing events, this, too, shall pass.

Did FDR's policy really prolong the Great Depression by 7 years, as leading UCLA economists now believe?

In an article in the August issue of the Journal of Political Economy, Ohanian and Cole blame specific anti-competition and pro-labor measures that Roosevelt promoted and signed into law June 16, 1933.

"President Roosevelt believed that excessive competition was responsible for the Depression by reducing prices and wages, and by extension reducing employment and demand for goods and services," said Cole, also a UCLA professor of economics. "So he came up with a recovery package that would be unimaginable today, allowing businesses in every industry to collude without the threat of antitrust prosecution and workers to demand salaries about 25 percent above where they ought to have been, given market forces. The economy was poised for a beautiful recovery, but that recovery was stalled by these misguided policies."

Interesting article, and baffling that it came out of UCLA!!

Yes, it's the perfect example of a far-left liberal not believing in the free market. When the free market has been left to regulate itself things have gone peachy. It's only when the government decides "it knows better" and interferes that things really go to pot.

Take our current situation: Banks didn't want to give loans to people who obviously couldn't afford them. The government butts in and says, "but you HAVE to give loans to the poor and working class! And if you don't we'll fine you BIG time!" Hence, the Community Reinvestment Act and other government mandates to give loans to unqualified applicants.

What happens? Just like the banks predicted, those who couldn't afford loans defaulted and the banks were left holding unsellable vacant properties, which they then turned over to Fannie and Freddy Mac. Bingo! You now have a horrible housing crisis that can be traced back to government interference in the markets.

There are clinical types of depression like Major Depression and Dysthymia. These are diagnosed by professionals who follow a diagnostic manual. These diagnoses have to be specific to include the symptoms and length given in the manual. There is also Atypical Depression. The common symptoms of depression are present with this type. but it is also known to be reactive. This means that if something good happens the depression would lift for a time. This is absent in other forms of depression. Atypical depression is 40% of all depressions.

Recovery from clinical depression?

I have been diagnosed as clinically depressed in the last 2 years at age 25. The lack of focus and concentration that I feel as a result has caused me to leave several jobs, which has made me more depressed. Can intensive therapy and practicing mindfulness as well as other medical interventions restore me to somewhat normal functioning or is clinical depression something one just has to cope with?

You can recover from this but you have to be the one to decide that it is what you want. With the right meds and the right therapist things can get a lot better for you. If you find one that is not helpful then see someone else until you start to get it right. I am sorry you are going through this but it can be over come I know because I did it. I do not take anything now. It is a decision you have to make and be determined to make it out of it.

Online Psychotherapy Is Effective

There has been a growing interest in Online Therapy using email, correspondence and live video conferencing using Skype or similar free services. The convenience of this approach for the client is very apparent: The client can take control of the process, paying only for the time that he or she wants to pay for. The client can have his session at a time that is convenient to him, and can take the time to compose his email questions and feedback at his leisure, instead of feeling pressured to perform during a traditional session. Of course, not having to take time off work to drive to a therapist's office is always a plus. Generally the cost for online sessions is much lower too since the therapist doesn't have to pay for office space. Generally, it is well recognized that if you make therapy more accessible and more convenient, then people will be more likely to stick with it, and this is always a major factor in the successful outcome of psychotherapy.

What about effectiveness?

Well, in a clinical study published in the Lancet in August, 2009, Online Therapy, via instant messaging, resulted in a significant recovery rate for patients suffering from depression. The treatment method used was Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

In general online therapy works best when clients are offered specific strategies with which they can experiment at home. Techniques such as CBT, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (nlp), Mindfulness-based Psychotherapy (http://www.mindfulnessmeditationtherapy.com) are particularly appropriate.

The very process of writing down your thoughts in an email is an immensely powerful tool for helping you develop a more objective relationship with emotions, which can be very abstract and difficult to verbalize. This is why journaling has long been encouraged in many schools of psychotherapy. Then taking the bold step of sharing this with another person is also very empowering for most people. Some people are good at doing this face-to-face, but many actually feel intimidated and need more time to formulate the right words, without a therapist pressing them for content.

The online approach can also be good for the therapist, because he or she can take time to design the right strategies to offer the client and not feel pressured to provide a solution on the spot.

Is Online Therapy a substitute for face-to-face sessions?

No, probably not, but it is clearly an excellent addition, and provides an alternative for those who don't feel comfortable with traditional therapy sessions, or are unable to attend such sessions. It may be particularly useful for those suffering from social anxiety or agoraphobia. One thing is for certain: the internet has become a major part of most people's lives, and we should develop the extraordinary potential of the World Wide Web for bringing people together to promote healing.

would this be something people would even want to read?

I'm 17 [almost 18] and I've spent the last 7 months in a residential treatment center for depression, bulimia, self injury, suicidal thoughts and gestures and some other junk. But through the course of my treatment I got into journaling and so I have them from the start up to where I am now and I'm supposed to be getting out soon.

I wanted to get something like an online journal where I can put up my journal entires from treatment and have them read.
