Relief from anxiety attacks?

I've been on klonopin for 11 years for panic/anxiety attacks, and am trying to gather as much info on methods used to control the attacks as possible so that I can eventually get off of it. I've tried the breathing exercises and have had no success--any other ideas?

Consult your doctor on this, but I heard that eating bananas can relieve anxiety due to helping balance seratonin levels. Other things you might try are: yoga and music therapy. Breathing exercises are a good idea, but if they aren't working, perhaps these other ideas may help. Whatever you do, I wouldn't go off a medication without a doctor's supervision.

3.Progressive Muscle Relaxation - Progressive muscle relaxation is an easy technique that works on every major muscle group in the body. It aids in decreasing tension in your muscles while it strengthens them. It can be done while sitting down or lying in bed.

Begin by tensing the muscles in your feet and hold it for a count of 8. Release the contraction and relax your muscles. Continue this same contraction method for all your major muscle groups in your body all the way to your head. When you have finished, your entire body with be totally relaxed.

4.Yoga - Yoga is a popular exercise that involves a combination of physical and mental practices to help attain total relaxation. Yoga teaches you to control your breathing while you focus on stretching and relaxing your body's major muscle groups.

As far as fibromyalgia is concerned, the best form of Yoga is Hatha yoga. This is a form of Yoga that concentrates on particular movements and poses to center the body and mind. You can choose to do Yoga on your own with the aid of video or books, or you can attend a local class.

5.Personal Sanctuary - Escaping to a positive stress-free environment when you are tense is a great way to induce relaxation. You can create your own "personal sanctuary" in your home. One of the most popular supplements today for relaxation is an herb called Kava Kava. It comes mostly from the western Pacific, specifically found in Hawaii and Fiji. All parts of the plant are used in its preparation as a supplement, but the herb is generally prepared in westernized countries from the powder ground from the root.

Kava is such a powerful beverage that its effects have been compared to alcohol. The sedative properties are strong, and while it is an over-the-counter herb that can be purchased in the tea section of your grocery store or in your local health food store, it should still be handled with care. Many people taking herbal supplements do not realize their potency, and Kava is no exception. The good news is, one cannot become ‘addicted’ to Kava Kava nor can someone build up an immunity or tolerance to it. Therefore, you can feel comfortable knowing that it may safely be consumed so long as it is consumed in moderation. Another potent amino acid is called Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, better known as GABA. This amino acid is a neurotransmitter that is an integral part of our central nervous system. It is thought to pass through the blood-brain barrier, meaning it can affect you fairly quickly and should not be taken by those who are pregnant or nursing without consulting a physician first. GABA is generally sold in pill form at most health food stores. Some studies have indicated that its efficacy is questionable and that you are wasting your money if purchasing this supplement. Other satisfied customers think differently.

Another supplement closely related to GABA and available in pill form as well as tea is L-theanine. This is an amino acid that also crosses the blood-brain barrier, and is most commonly found in green tea. Many people reap great benefits drinking green tea, for its antioxidant properties, reported appetite control, and relaxation benefits. The relaxation and anxiety reduction stems from the theanine amino.

Whether taken in pill or liquid form, L-theanine can help with mental stress and clarity, and can improve mood when combined with caffeine (as is the case with green tea). In its pure form, though, it is most often used for anxiety relief. It works by promoting alpha waves in the brain, which signals wakeful relaxation. It increases brain levels of serotonin, dopamine, and other feel-good chemicals and can be good for both depression and anxiety for this reason. There are no known toxicity concerns with L-theanine, so as long as you are in good health you should be able to take this supplement for any anxiety issues you may have without concern. As always, though, it is a good precautionary measure to consult your health care practitioner before starting any supplement program.

Do Beta Blockers Weaken the heart?

Hello, My question is having been on toprol (generic is metoprolol) 12.5 mg for exactly a year now, I have a question lately I have felt like my heart is beating weaker or something to that degree, now as I do suffer from a very severe anxiety disorder it could simply be all misconception. But If there are any Dr's or RN's I would like to know if Beta blockers weaken the Heart muscle or its ability to pump blood.

And could it also be a side effect of my being afrad of heart problems (im on it for anxiety symptom reduction and because my heart rate was reaching 170 180 durning attacks for maybe 3 hours) And because of these fears I do not exercise at all I have not since the summer of 07 I also take xanax as needed.
(22 1/2 years old dont smoke drink etc)

Beta Blockers interfere with the sympathetic nervous system. At the ends of the nerves going to the heart they release a neurotransmitter called Ach. This then binds to your beta receptors in the heart and increased the strength and rate of contractions. As the name suggests beta blockers block the beta receptors in the heart limiting the sympathetic effect on the heart, which helps to prevent arrhythmias from developing.

In taking beta blockers, your ensure your parasympathetic nervous system dominates, so the strength of contraction of your heart is reduced as well as the rate.

So beta blockers do weaken your heart but only when you take them, it is not a pertinent state. However there are other mechanisms in your body which will also intervene. If you started to exercise you will be fine (as long as it's not too vigorous to start with). As you start to exercise, your heart rate will increase as the O2 in your blood decreases (due to muscle contraction). This increase in heart rate means more blood will return to your heart per minute so the volume of blood in your heart will increase (increased preload). If you increase the preload of the heart you will increase the contractility of the heart muscle. ( because the muscle will be stretched more).

So by doing exercise you will strengthen your heart muscle. I would ask a physiotherapist or doctor to suggest an exercise plan to get you back to your active self, you will probbably feel better for it! The beta blockers are acting to protect your heart not damage it.

Self-talk is the inner chatter that accompanies us in most of our waking moments. Your self-talk can be a powerful aid to your performance, or it can be destructive.

What do you say when you talk to yourself? If you're like many of us, your self-talk is a caustic mixture of judgments, complaints, and verbal abuse, in the form of "tapes" - mental recordings - that you've imprinted on your mind and play over and over again. No wonder you feel down and depressed.

However, you can change the tapes you play, and your self-talk, as soon as you become aware of what you're saying to yourself. Changing your self-talk will turbo-charge your life and enhance your performance in everything you do.

You can change your self-talk right now

Let's try a little test. Say to yourself, silently or aloud: "That was a stupid thing to say. How could I say _________ (pick any verbal blunder you can remember). I'm so stupid."

How do you feel? Perhaps you feel sad, or anxious. Take a moment to track your emotions in your body. Perhaps you have a sinking feeling in your tummy, or your face is becoming hot. Your self-talk immediately affected your body, your mental state and your emotions.

Now let's try some positive self-talk. Take a couple of deep breaths, smile, and say to yourself, aloud or silently: "I'm happy, strong and confident."

How do you feel now? Feel your emotions in your body. Repeat the words "I'm happy, strong and confident" several times - keep smiling as you do so. You felt an emotional lift, didn't you? You can give yourself an emotional boost at any time, just by changing your self-talk. If you make it a habit to repeat motivating self-talk to yourself, not only will you feel better, but you'll perform better in everything you do.

Self-talk is powerful, and it's free. It's the best thing you can do for yourself.

Erase old self-talk tapes: make new tapes

Affirmations are a form of self-talk, and you can create your own affirmations to use as self-talk. However, the best way to change your old self-talk tapes, is to make a new tape every time you catch yourself replaying an old tape.

For example, if you hear yourself saying: "I'll never get this project done. No one's helping me with it, I'm always left to do the hard work and others get the credit..."

Change your self-talk immediately. Write down your new self-talk tape which will over time erase the old self-talk tape: "This project's interesting. I'm going to have fun working with it. I'll ask ___ and ___ for their input right away. I'm taking charge of this project, it will be done in no time, and I'll claim the credit because I deserve it."

Now repeat your new self-talk to yourself as often as you need to, particularly as soon as you can hear any faint whispers of the old self talk. Boost the new tape with affirmations, like: "I'm confident, capable and strong. I CAN do this!"

Start today: use powerful self-talk to enhance your performance in everything you do.

Learn as much as you can as education is the key in managing your fears.

These, for example, include Anxiety Disorders Association of America, Institute of Mental Health, National Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health America; all present lots of solo and combined counseling and psychiatric services.

 

6- Go online: There are several useful websites dedicated to providing information, relief, and support for those suffering or recovering from anxiety. Such sites usually contain self-help strategies and self tests to fight anxiety. There are online-therapies, anxiety management techniques and courses available. You can also sign-up for newsletters, blogs, mailing lists / web rings and forums to share your own and view others’ views on the same.

 

7- Try audiovisual support: According to some clinical studies, audiovisual distraction is the most effective means of managing the anxiety especially in children. You can also find some wonderful tapes and CD’s that have many different kinds of meditations, yoga or relaxation techniques.

 

8- Approach counselors or psychologists: A professional counselor or a psychologist, who is on call 24 hours a day, can help you assess your anxiety level. You can also learn and practice relaxation techniques. Often, counseling can help you to identify thought patterns that worsen your anxiety and generate more positive ways to think about your life.

 

9- Consult your doctor or psychiatrist: While many think that medications should be the last resort for tackling anxiety, at times, you may need a health care professional to find out whether you need a medicine to manage your symptoms. However, do remember, it is always yours choice whether or not to pursue medical treatment. In short, dealing with anxiety attacks can be challenging but by trying different approaches you should be able to find one that is best for you. The good news is, if managed properly, the treatment of anxiety is often successful. Therefore, get help as soon as possible. The sooner you get help, the sooner you can recover.

Social anxiety institute tapes?

Has anyone used the tapes from the Social Anxiety Institute, and are they worth it? Do they actually work?

I have social anxiety and am looking to get over it, but I'm a bit wary of these tapes.

I saw SAI's youtube channel where they have SA sufferers who have gone through the tapes talking, and they all seem like they still have really bad social anxiety. They were being asked questions like, "Can you think of any method besides these tapes that would help?? 'Cause there's really no other option but the tapes, and there are no good therapists." Seems like an ad to me, and this institute seems a bit brainwashing and creepy.

Done with rant lol, can someone tell me if it actually works? If you used these did it actually help you with your social anxiety?

Well I've never heard of those tapes, but there are plenty of other methods to help ease social anxiety, my therapist has probably shown me more than 20 ways by now.

However, when it comes to anxiety attacks, some of the doctors find it very difficult to tell you what is wrong with you. They may conduct several tests and still they may not come to any conclusion. They may also say that you are perfectly normal, but you know it from within that you are not normal. There are times that the patients may go crazy if they do not get the proper treatment.

If you suffer form frequently occurring anxiety attacks, then visiting your regular physician is not recommended. You will have to visit a specialist or a medical professional that deals with only such cases. You can get enough help for anxiety from a psychiatrist. However you need to be patient with the doctor as well as the treatment.

Although, most of the medications that are prescribed are good and effective, however, some of them have side affects too. If you want to avoid the side affects and look forward for something drug-free, then you can go for hypnosis therapy. This therapy, is generally, combined with other therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. The medical specialist who conducts this therapy is called as a hypnotherapist.

When you visit a hypnotherapist the first time, he or she will ask you about your medical history and other health related questions. Then, the hypnotherapist will give you a briefing about hypnosis along with all the pros and cons of the treatment. After the briefing of the technique, the hypnotherapist will tell you how the treatment will help for anxiety attacks. The treatment starts with a series of relaxation exercises. Each session of the hypnotherapist may last for 30 minutes and you will surely feel the difference in four to ten sessions.

The hypnotist would make observations after each session so as to understand and interpret the progress of the patient. You will get to know about the same when the information would be shared by you. children in the age group of 9-12 are easy to hypnotize and get a quick relief. They can be cured after 2-3 sessions of hypnotherapy. Another type of hypnotism that can be done along with hypnotherapy is self hypnotism. You need some audio tapes and special instructions for the same.

Charles Linden devised another method of fighting anxiety attacks. this is referred to as Linden method. It is really helpful and has made the lives of many people easier. Hypnotherapy and Linden method both are drug free and without any side affects. It would be completely wrong to think that anxiety attacks are untreatable when there are so many methods to treat it.

If the trance was full and deep, you should have this feeling permanently. So keep at the tapes, and feel relaxed and refreshed as you go deeper and deeper. Soon you will notice that you don't need help any more to feel anxious free.

If you feel that you are still having problems, then try a professional hypnotherapist, it will probably only take one session to place you into a deeper, more fulfilling trance that will allow you to be in control of your life once again.

Meditation Helps Students With Adhd: New Study

The Transcendental Meditation technique may be an effective and safe non-pharmaceutical aid for treating ADHD, according to a promising new study published this month in the peer-reviewed online journal Current Issues in Education.

The pilot study followed a group of middle school students with ADHD who were meditating twice a day in school. After three months, researchers found over 50 percent reduction in stress and anxiety and improvements in ADHD symptoms.

<b>Effect exceeds expectations</b>

"The effect was much greater than we expected," said Sarina J. Grosswald, Ed.D., a George Washington University-trained cognitive learning specialist and lead researcher on the study. "The children also showed improvements in attention, working memory, organization, and behavior regulation."

Grosswald said that after the in-school meditation routine began, "teachers reported they were able to teach more, and students were able to learn more because they were less stressed and anxious."

<b>Stress interferes with the ability to learn</b>

Prior research shows ADHD children have slower brain development and a reduced ability to cope with stress. "Stress interferes with the ability to learn-it shuts down the brain," said William Stixrud, Ph.D., a Silver Spring, Maryland, clinical neuropsychologist and co-author of the study.

"Medication for ADHD is very effective for some children, but it is marginally or not effective for others. Even for those children who show improved symptoms with the medication, the improvement is often insufficient or accompanied by troubling side effects," Stixrud said. "Virtually everyone finds it difficult to pay attention, organize themselves and get things done when they're under stress. So it stands to reason that the TM technique which reduces stress and organizes brain function would reduce ADHD symptoms."

While in some cases a child cannot function without medication, there is growing concern about the health risks and side effects associated with the common ADHD medications, including mood swings, insomnia, tics, slowed growth, and heart problems. In 2006 the FDA required manufacturers to place warning labels on ADHD medications, listing the potential serious health risks.

These high risks and growing concerns are fueling parents' search for alternatives that may be safer for their kids.

The study was conducted in a private K-12 school for children with language-based learning disabilities. Participation was restricted to 10 students, ages 11-14, who had pre-existing diagnoses of ADHD. About half of the students were on medication. The students meditated at school in a group for 10 minutes, morning and afternoon.

To determine the influence of the Transcendental Meditation technique, at the beginning and end of the three-month period, parents, teachers and students completed standard ADHD assessment inventories measuring stress and anxiety, behavior and social competency, and executive function. Students were also given a battery of performance tests to measure cognitive functioning.

<b>"The results were quite remarkable"</b>

Andy and Daryl Schoenbach's daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in second grade. Like most ADHD children she was taking medication. "The medication helped but had mixed results-she still lost focus, had meltdowns, and the medications affected her sleep and appetite," said Andy, who lives with Daryl in Washington D.C. "She was not performing close to her potential and we didn't see the situation improving. So at the end of seventh grade when her doctor recommended increasing the medication, we decided it was time to take a different course-stopping the medication and using Transcendental Meditation."

"The results were quite remarkable," Daryl said. "The twice daily meditations smoothed things out, gave her perspective, and enabled her to be in greater control of her own life when things started falling apart. It took some time, but it gradually changed the way she handled crises and enabled her to feel confident that she could take on greater challenges -in her own words, 'climb a mountain.'"

"Everyone noticed the change," Andy added.

Grosswald explained that there is substantial research showing the effectiveness of the TM technique for reducing stress and anxiety, and improving cognitive functioning among the general population. "What's significant about these new findings is that among children who have difficulty with focus and attention, we see the same results. TM doesn't require concentration, controlling the mind or disciplined focus. The fact that these children are able to do TM, and do it easily shows us that this technique may be particularly well suited for children with ADHD," she said.

This study was funded by the Abramson Family Foundation and the Institute for Community Enrichment.

A second, recently completed TM-ADHD study with a control group measured brain function using electroencephalography (EEG). Preliminary data shows that three months practice of the technique resulted in significant positive changes in brain functioning during visual-motor skills. Changes were specifically seen in the circuitry of the brain associated with attention and distractibility. After six months TM practice, measurements of distractibility moved into the normal range.

A third, $2 million TM-ADHD study, to be funded in part by a grant from <a href="http://www.davidlynchfoundation.org/">The David Lynch Foundation</a>, will more fully investigate the effects of the technique on ADHD and other learning disorders.

" The rate of prescriptions for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the U.S. has increasing by a factor of five since 1991-with production of ADHD medicines up 2,000 percent in 9 years.
" The commonly used drugs for ADHD are stimulants (amphetamines). These drugs can cause persistent and negative side effects, including sleep disturbances, reduced appetite, weight loss, suppressed growth, and mood disorders. The side effects are frequently treated with additional medications to manage insomnia or mood swings. Almost none of the medications prescribed for insomnia or mood disturbances are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with children.
" The long-term health effects of ADHD medications are not fully known, but evidence suggests risks of cardiac disorders and sudden death, liver damage and psychiatric events. It has also been found that children on long-term medication have significantly higher rates of delinquency, substance use, and stunted physical growth.

I've a thought disorder and have loads of problems communicating, what can I do about it?

Since the end of last year, I always had problems trying to communicate.
I often showed symptoms of thought disorder where I am unable to successfully complete a sentence - like for example - 'Do I look pretty?' and 'Does my face have any blemishes?' - it seems like I'm thinking of two things so quickly that I usually end up saying - 'Does I look' - then I quickly realize I made a grammatical mistake and I get all pissed at myself.
Similarly, I usually change the topics very quickly when I'm talking. Maybe it's because I've a lot in my mind that I'm trying to say, so I pretty much jump from one topic to another.

I'm not sure if I've a thought disorder, but if I do have, what can I do about it? I heard it's due to stress and anxiety. I've tried meditation for a week or so, but there's no progress so far.

I took an online diagnostic test it says that I'm categorized under tangentiality and circumstantiality in my case.
