Depression Kids Health Quotes:

If you see ten troubles coming down the road you can be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you. By Calvin Coolidge Find out about Depression Kids Health

Fibromyalgia Blues - Depression, Anxiety & Stress

How can you have chronic pain and fatigue and NOT be depressed?  All people - healthy or not - struggle every day with the stress of raising a family, their jobs, financial troubles, family illness and yes, death & taxes. You’ve got to get the kids to school on time, pay the bills, go to work (if you can work), clean the house, feed the pets, water the lawn, pick up the kids, take them to soccer, piano lessons, make dinner, make the kids do their chores (good luck) and you have to do all this AND MORE with debilitating pain, fatigue, migraines, IBS, TMJ, RLS, etc.  Just thinking about it is depressing!

Fibromyalgia sufferers are often misdiagnosed with anxiety disorders and depression, implying that it’s “all in your head”, but research has consistently proven that Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression or hypochondria. Anxiety and depression do CO-EXIST with FM & treatment is important because both can make FM worse and interfere with symptom management.

From my own experience, I can tell you how easy it is to let it get the best of you.  There were days when I just got into bed in my dark room I called “the cave” and isolated myself from my family and friends.  I avoided leaving the house unless I just absolutely had to and when I did, all I could think about was getting home and crawling into bed.  The more depressed I got, the more pain I had.  The more pain I had, the more depressed I got!

I had anxiety attacks and the stress of a bad financial situation was more than I could handle - or so I thought.  There were times when I wondered how in the world I was going to make through the next day - How much longer can I deal with this?  I felt hopeless, helpless and worthless.  My self-image was horrible and my confidence level was nonexistent.  I was ashamed.

Have you ever felt that way?  I hope not, but IF YOU HAVE, there is a way to get out of the pit of depression and anxiety!  You can become a productive member of your family and society as a whole.  It’s not easy, but what choice do you have?  You know you don’t want to live like this forever.

I always hated the idea of therapy!  First of all, the effort it would take for me to get out of the house was a big factor.  Secondly, I didn’t want to tell all my pitiful story to a stranger and I wasn’t even sure I’d be believed when it came to the Fibromyalgia part.  There are still some mental health professionals that believe FM is psychological rather than physiological.  I didn’t want to hear it.

About a year ago, my son needed therapy for depression and anger issues.  I took him to several professionals and one suggested (in front of my son) that he could cure my Fibromyalgia because it was more emotional & psychological stress than a physical problem.  The next day, we went to another therapist.  I didn’t trust him to help my son if he was going to say that to me.  We finally found one that fit our family since we would all take part in my son’s therapy.  It didn’t take me or the therapist long to discover I needed help, too.  He saw right through me!

Therapy has changed my life in so many ways and with an understanding professional to guide me, I have taken back the control I had given up to Fibromyalgia.  He helped me see my value, my positive traits and taught me how to cope with my pain, stress, anxiety and depression.  Talking about it with an objective party is also a way of healing emotional scars and it was a relief to just lay it all out there!  He also recommended a new anti-depressant to my doctor which has helped me a lot.

Perception is everything.  I perceived myself a certain way and became exactly that.

My father was recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer - he never smoked.  It is the rarer form of lung cancer that is fast-acting and incurable.  I was devastated when I heard the news!  My dad is my hero and my rock - life without him is something I can’t even fathom.  I really lost it for a while, but with counseling, I am finding my own way to cope.  I’m still have bad days, but I am trying to work through them in a more healthy way.  The woman I was two years ago would have gone back to her cave and never come out.

There many medications, supplements & herbs out there that can help.  Talk to your doctor about which ones might work for you and always double check for interactions and side effects!  I have a lot of information about prescription drugs alternatives, therapies and other resources on my website that might be of help.

Don’t be afraid to take that first step and find a good mental health professional!  It truly is worth it.  I am now a functioning “Fibromyte” and though, I still have pain and other issues, I can get through them one day at a time.  If I can do it, YOU can, too!

Thinking about our economy, what do you think our economy is heading for? AnotherGreat depression?

With higher cost of living, scarce job market, lay offs, businesses moving, labor rate, health care and the exchange rate what do you think? How will their decisions today effect our future and what decisions do they make that we will have to amend to make our kids future to be better? What decisions will we make or would have made if we were in there shoes?

I majored in Economics in college and one thing I learned is that this country's economy has an incredible ability to rebound, even after bad recessions. It has happened many times over and over, however, the US is clearly losing its privileged economic position the world. The subprime mortgage meltdown pretty much supports your idea that things are getting worse and worse. The amount of personal debt in the US is another concern, although it is much higher in the UK. I truly think that things will only get worse as time progresses.

Depression Forum Help Quotes:

Worry is rust upon the blade. By Henry Ward Hughes Find out about Depression Forum Help

Dealing With Depression According to a Depression Forum

Depression is a word that many people do not want to say with their mouths. If you have been through it, you will know that it is the worse place to be in. A depression forum is suitable for people who have both gone through it and those who have not. We are all susceptible to it and empowering ourselves in advance will make sure that we know what to do if or when it starts to creep to us. The best lessons to learn from a depression forum is how to prevent it and if it is already here, how to deal with it. Signs of depression will differ from individual to individual, there are those people who will retreat to their shells and there are those who will come out in an extra ordinary way. One thing that all depressed people will feel, is like they are under pressure. Many say that they are in a deep hole where there is no visible way out. If this describes you, it is a high step for you to see a specialist. A doctor will perform a diagnosis and, they alone can confirm what your condition is. Therefore, when you have the signs, do not just assume that you are depressed. Let a professional confirm your condition.

In a good depression forum, the importance of a second or even a third opinion will be highly recommended. This is because people can view things from different points of view. When you are totally sure of your condition, your doctor must prescribe the right or suitable treatment for you. For further help, it is paramount that you talk to your pastor or spiritual leader for counseling. At this time, you want to explore all your options. There are people who take depression medication until they feel better. You are supposed to follow through with the medication as prescribed. If you are having troubles with a certain kind of medication, you need to ensure that you see your doctor so that they can assess your situation. Members of a depression forum who have been through it will tell you that it is hard going through it. However, no matter how hard it is, you have to keep a positive attitude. When you are positive you will facilitate your process of getting better.

In many depression forums, the issue of keeping a journal comes up. They say that writing is therapeutic and many have seen this to be the case. When you write down things that are hurting you, you will be in a position to plan what your mind can deal with. You will be in a position to identify all issues you are going through. Many times, people going through depression never point out a single issue that can be said to be what is bothering them. Plan or arrange your thoughts by writing them down, you will discover that is really works. To deal with depression, you also need to exercise or work out. Blow steam this way and feel refreshed. Watch also what you are taking in. Fruits and vegetables will nourish your cells and you will be in a position to improve your condition.

Depression Disorder Treatment Quotes:

Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt. By William Shakespeare Measure for Measure1604 Find out about Depression Disorder Treatment

The Pain of Bipolar Depression Disorder

Bipolar depression disorder generally occurs before the age of 30 years and may first develop during adolescence, but most commonly presents its symptoms in the late teens and early 20s. It is a type of mood disorder that exhibits marked changes in mood between extreme elation or happiness and severe depression. Bipolar disorder used to be referred to as manic depression.

Like other mental illnesses, bipolar disorder cannot yet be identified physiologically; for example, through a blood test or a brain scan. Therefore, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder is made on the basis of symptoms, course of illness, and, when available, family history. The diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV).

A person with bipolar depression disorder experiences cycling moods that usually swing from being overly elated or irritable (mania) to sad and hopeless (depression) and then back again, with periods of normal moods in between. There are statistics that say that one in five people will suffer from depression at least once during their life.

Symptoms of depression include: loss of interest in usual activities, prolonged sad or irritable mood, loss of energy or fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, sleeping too much or inability to sleep, drop in grades and inability to concentrate, inability to experience pleasure, appetite loss or overeating, anger, worry, and anxiety, thoughts of death or suicide.

Symptoms of manic states are varied and include restlessness, increased energy, euphoric mood, racing thoughts, poor judgment, intrusive or provocative behavior, difficulty concentrating, and a decreased need for sleep.

The exact causes of bipolar disorder aren't known, but stressful life events, un-resolvable problems, or emotional damage in childhood, possibly combined with genetic factors may play a role. Scientists are also studying about the possible causes of bipolar disorder through several kinds of studies. As the causes are more clearly identified and defined through research, scientists will gain a better understanding of the underlying causes of the illness, and eventually may be able to predict which types of treatment will work most effectively. As it stands now it is thought that bipolar depression disorder is caused by electrical and chemical processes in the brain not functioning correctly.

Unfortunately, for most individuals, lifelong treatment may be required to prevent recurrent manic and depressive episodes. They should try to identify the features of the illness that are distinct to that individual, including the warning signs of recurrent manic or depressive episodes, so that someone in treatment can get immediate help to ward off those symptoms. Failure to seek help can lead to suicide so the most important factor in any treatment is the sufferer's acceptance of some form of counseling and/ or medication.

Bipolar depression disorder is a serious mental illness that can be successfully treated with proper psychological counseling and medication. It is important that anyone exhibiting the signs or symptoms of this disease seek help so they can properly manage this condition.

Hormone treatment for depression?

I recently visitied a D.O. and a hormone test has revelaed that my hormones, specifically my cortisol, is high when it should be low and low when it should be high. Additionally, I demonstrate a lot of the symptoms of an adrenal disorder: depression, irregular menstral cycles, skin conditions, etc. My doctor has reccomended adrenal stress end (?) to treat my depression, but I have heard that hormone treatment for non-menpausal women is risky at best, a crock at worst. (I mean, you can get this stuff over the counter for goodnes sake!) I'm only 26! Does anyone have anicdotes or advice to share?

You may also want to have your thyroid checked. I would highly recommend seeing an Endocrinologist as they specialize in treating many of the symptoms you've mentioned. Best of luck to you, I've been through it too.

Introduction:

Human nature varies throughout the world. How an individual perceive and understand situation rely on diverse issues encompassing personal, social, economical or environmental. Childhood grooming demands positive, encouraging and congenial family and social atmosphere. This not only motivates and inculcates confidence but also provides ability to grasp and tackle stress and related issues intelligently.

In this competitive epoch and demanding life, stress cannot be evaded. We do not come across tough situations every day, it happens occasionally when situation turn out to be beyond our control. The situation becomes tough when major transitions are taking place in particular, when a student joins college, a shift from a nurturing family and home security to outer world.

Chemical imbalance, genetics, a history of abuse, family problems, death of loved one, any trauma in the past, pressures related with the academic performance, cut-throat competition, several adjustments in a new environment, a fear of failure in the chosen field, psycho-social, financial pressures generated due to escalating cost of education and books and to meet the domestic needs on a limited budget, lack of financial literacy, sexual assault, alcohol or drug abuse, poor diet and exercise habits, relationships, both friendship and physical, with opposite sex and peer pressure to frame a good impression upon everyone, loss of harmony, preparing for life after graduation.

In order to meet the expectations at all levels, trying to balance classes with work and social life, and to prove one’s worth, the students experience total deficiency of orientation, expression, motivation, hopelessness, despair and anguish, all these factors keep the students under stress, frustration, anxiety and gradually this sow the seeds of depression, the condition about which the student(s) may not be aware. The situation if ignored becomes devastating.

Depression is a severe medical condition that engrosses the body, mood and thoughts. It can affect person’s outlook, routine activities, behaviour and conduct. It can change the overall personality. Individual(s) with such illness cannot simply “put themselves together” and get better.

Measures taken by college authorities to combat depression in students-

The college authorities are becoming aware of the level and amount of stress the students are going through. Some of the Institution takes utmost care of the students so that they do not become the victim of depression and related disorders. They do counseling of the students so as to make them aware about various kinds of drug abuse and alcohol abuse (NY Times, 1997).

Various organizations are coming up so as to help students get study loan to complete their education. Many student welfare organizations are established to support the students in their academics, in finances and also give concern to their personal problems that induce stress and depression in the students (Section 4: Supporting Students' Welfare). They take care of any disability if the student has and also aid financial security to the students. They pay chief and supreme level of attention to the “worrying students”.

Student forum are established, where students can discuss explicitly about their problem(s) and get the best solution (http://www.americancollege.edu/Student_Forum.aspx).

Some of the Universities depute their staff members to discuss with the students in a friendly and congenial manner so that they can outburst their stress or any kind of anxiety creeping in their minds (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare).

Authorities have started various online help services for those students who feel uncomfortable to discuss out their issues or they are scared of the anticipatory consequences, or they are shy enough to speak (www.counsel.soton.ac.uk/publications/referrals.php).

Various Universities have Chaplains. They are available at Chaplaincy Centre(s) and students can talk confidentially and discuss their worries and grievances.

Numerous Careers Advisory Service(s) (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare), run events throughout the year that encompass Career Focus weeks for Second Years and Finalists. They also organize Work Experience Fair, Finance and I.T Fair, Skill Workshops. These not only support the students but also provide means and guidelines to achieve success.

The college and Universities also have diverse High field health facilities, Day Nurseries, gymnasiums, for better health of the student.

Some of the Colleges also run various personality development programs, they help the students in self- improvement and also build confidence of “CAN DO” attitude.

Nightline services are also provided by some Universities, which comprise confidential telephone listening service run by students for students (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare).

Many higher authorities of educational institutions, universities and colleges are aware of the consequences of stress that their students are going through so they have started appointing psychologists. They talk with college students about the relationships they have with both their parents and peers. Mattering to others is important to college students, and negative affect may be exacerbated if peer relationships are lacking.

To reduce perceived stress and depression, college students may benefit from understanding the developmental process that occurs in college. Psychologists can assist college student clients in developing close and healthy interpersonal relationships with peers by teaching important skills, such as open communication and assertiveness. It is also important to take the sex of the client into consideration given that sex differences were found consistently in this study. Though women may feel that they matter to others more than men do, they also experience more college stress and depression. As women and men report comparable levels of self-esteem, psychologists may want to implement interventions focusing on other factors such as the interpersonal relationships of women, particularly the family and friends to whom they believe they matter.

What measures Colleges and Universities must take to reduce depression and help students coping with it proactively:

“Depression is a huge problem in the college student population” says John Greden M.D executive director of U-M Depression Centre. College students are framing negative headlines in the news, initially it was related to alcohol, drug, physical abuse but in the present scenario the concern is for mental illness in the college campuses. In American Psychology Today Hara Marrano says “Mental illness is absolutely going off the charts on college campuses”. psychiatrist Shamsah Sonawalla of Massachusetts General Hospital  says “there is no just increase in the prevalence “ of psychological problems in college students but “an identification of problems earlier . that we recognize it more is a good thing. But we have opened up Pandora’s box” that Many students do not know notice the changes in them, they may feel anxiety, stress blues, but cannot root out the biological cause, they may feel that they are falling behind then their peers  (Ann Arbor, MI)

The symptoms of depression are based on- genetics, environment, life events, family and social environment and medical conditions together stimulate the brain to release mood altering neurotransmitters that may lead to anxiety, stress and depression.

The authorities must take the charge of not only counselling the students and parents (if required) but also amend the curriculum if required so as to put let pressure on students. Things like easy ways to study must be implemented. Co=operation is desired in case if the faculty members come across any situation if they notice grouchy and irritable behaviour of the collegiate, if the student becomes slow in thinking and speaking than normal, trouble in concentrating, remembering and making decisions, changes in habits especially eating and sleeping, lose interest in things , they use to enjoy, and if the student(s) have feeling of guilt, hopelessness, and wonder if the life is worth living. Above all if the student is thinking a lot about death or suicide, frequent complains about headache and stomach-ache.

Although the findings of this study are compelling, certain limitations need to be recognized. All of the measures were self report, and there were no behavioral indicators of the constructs being examined. There may have been a ceiling effect on mattering with the average score 3.27 out of a possible 4. In addition, the self-reported yearly family income was relatively high.

In addition, the study was conducted at only one university in one area of the United States. Again, generalizing the findings to students across the United States should be made cautiously. This study found that perceived mattering, a relatively new construct, self-esteem, and sex of participant are highly related to both depression and perceived stress, and that when combined with stress, they accounted for a considerable portion of the variance in depression. These findings have practical implications regarding issues to be addressed in therapy for those psychologists who work on college campuses. In addition, this study adds to the empirical knowledge about depression, as well as perceived stress, and calls for more research on these variables and their interconnectedness.

What Authorities can really do:
1.Help students get organized with their work
2.Students must also be allowed to take breaks, it is essential to have mental relaxation
3. Students must be encouraged for practicing and reharsing on their weakness rather than demotivating them.
4. the attitude to "Do it Now" must be given some relaxation to avoid stress and distress among the students.
5. students must be realized about their limitations and at the same time authorities mut encourage about their talents (hidden and expressed). This will provide confidence and mental relaxation.
6. Attitude of the student must be judged by the faculty members.
7. Students must be encouraged to pland their work schedule to have a systematic and less stressful work.
8. A positive and encouraging atmosphere reduces stress. it is the responsibility of college authorities to organise programs for the students which are related to their cultural and education.
9. Authorities must avoid comparisons between students as this becomes the sole reason for stress in students.
10. Pressures for the examination and performace can be reduced by introducing an educationa system that aids in learning through activities and projects, they should have practical orientation. This helps in grasping the subject fast.
11. Teaching through teaching aids always make the learning easy.

These are the efforts if taken can reduce the stress in college students and help the students to become a good and responsible citizens. The kind of education imparted by the Institutions id depicted in the personality of the students. Hence these students will shape the society in much reformed manner and can become a big help in reducing stress in fellows.

What are these symptoms of? Vivid colors and increased aesthetic and auditory perceptions?

Lately, colors and shapes are so vivid, and I feel like I experience what I see rather than just looking at it. Music makes my mind feel so open and free. Everything aesthetic seems beautiful to me.
This is a terrible comparison, but it's as if I am constantly on acid or shrooms; except it's natural and not brought on by any drugs or anything. It's not synesthesia, though I thought it was...what could this be? I have depression if that helps, and I think I might have schizophrenia (not hearing voices, but the other symptons like feeling alone or feelings of depersonalization). Please don't answer unless you actually understand what I'm talking about and don't make assumptions about depression or schizophrenia.

idk, maybe you've just learned that life is more beautiful than you thought it was, or that you view life as being very precious and finite, so that your perceptions have increased.

i wouldn't jump to conclusions about the whole schizophrenia thing. schizophrenics tend to be born with different brains and thus experience stronger perceptions from the beginning. a stronger indicator would be disorganized thoughts and nonsensical speech, as well as ill-based delusions.

Alcoholism Statistics: Enlightening Experience For Everyone

Alcoholism is one of the biggest problems in all over the world. Every year, several surveys are conducted to gather the alcoholism statistics. According to the statistical experts, alcoholism is even a worse disease than cancer or aids as it not only spoils the person's physical health but also spoils his/her life as well. Just by reason of massive drinking, a person has to sacrifice his/her family, career and social life. Sometimes, there are the possibilities that a person adopts some wrong ways to gather money for drinking. These wrong ways could be of crime including robbery and theft etc.

There are several types of alcoholism statistics. It might surprise you but it is true, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, there are five types of alcoholics. To increase your surprise, the biggest group of alcoholics in the world is young adults. Out of these five types of alcoholics, more than 31.5 come into the group of young adults. This is just a beginning. The next type of alcoholic is even more shocking.

The next type is the young antisocial alcoholics. This group contains all those young people who are in between 25 to 29 years of age and all of them have started drinking alcohol in their young ages. More than half of them are having several types of health hazards that make them fail to perform even normal functions. Many of them have people with drinking habits in their families. A major percentage of these people are also suffering from several types of depression and anxiety.

Besides this, the next category of alcoholics is functional alcoholics. More than half of them also smoke and all of them are belonging to middle age groups group. Surprisingly, all of them are having stable career and families. Around 19 percent or total alcoholics are intermediate familial alcoholics and 9 percent are considered as the chronic server alcoholics. After this, the next type of alcoholics is the server alcoholics. These people are those who will search for treatment for their drinking problems.

Now comes the turn of getting aware of number of men and women consumes alcohol. The results are shocking. Only in the US there are 9.8 million men having drinking problems while on the other hand 3.9 million women are exposed to drinking. According to the surveys, 3 out of 5 families have any particular person with drinking problems. 43 percent of total adults in US are open for drinking. The most shocking alcoholism statistic is that around 8 million children who are under the age of 18 years have an alcoholic parent either father or mother.

In US around 100,000 people lost their lives due to alcohol and 1/3rd of these deaths are committed suicides and accidents like car crashes or drowning. This shows that how an alcoholic person is more open for depression and anxiety. This has made alcohol the third largest cause of preventable deaths. Now, if you speak about the car crashes, around half of car accidents happen due to the alcohol or drunk driving.

If a man harbors any sort of fear it percolates through all thinking damages his personality and makes him a landlord to a ghost. By Lloyd Douglas Find out about Depression Us Statistics

How Illness Can Affect Depression

Illness and Depression

Depression often tags along with another serious illness such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, Parkinson's Disease and more.  So often doctors will treat the illness but not treat the depression which follows along. This is sad because if you are so dejected and pessimistic about being sick, chances are your recovery won't be the best.

Cancer Can Scare You to Death

Millions of people are living with a current or past diagnosis of cancer. Just the word 'cancer' causes people to panic, become overcome with fear of dying, and think they are forever ruined. There is an immediate fear of death, life plans upset, change in lifestyle, medical bills to face, and a fight to survive.  So often your doctor, your family, friends, and cancer specialists think that it is normal for you to be depressed when you have cancer and don't think it needs to be treated.  But how can you really participate in your treatment plan if you are expecting the worst, and knowing it will happen?

I have sat with people and their families when the diagnosis of cancer is given. The reaction is always disbelief, even if the person was suspecting this to be true. I have held the hand of women who have been told that their husbands have prostate cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, and many more.  I have sat silent with husbands who have just been given the news that their wife has breast cancer, uterine cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer.  Men tend not to talk but their pain can be felt through the looks on their faces. Cancer scares people and sometimes it scares them to death before their time.

Depression can and should be treated right along with any treatment for cancer. Antidepressant medications are usually well tolerated but there may be some side effects and problems with other medications taken.  It is very important to make it clear to your doctor that you need help for your depression as well as your cancer. It is also very important that if you are the husband, wife, sibling, or child of someone who is dealing with cancer to do the same thing. Please ask your doctor for antidepressant medication if you are suffering with cancer and are depressed.

Depression Can Break Your Heart

People with heart disease tend to suffer from depression more than healthy heart people. Flip that coin and people with depression are at greater risk for getting heart disease. If you have heart disease and are depressed you have a bigger risk of death after a heart attack. After having heart surgery, it's very important to follow through with necessary rehabilitation.  This is more difficult for someone who is depressed. Depression can increase blood pressure and affect clotting.  It can also lead to elevated insulin and cholesterol levels.  It can increase stress hormones, those fight or flight impulses we have when faced with danger. Again, a chemical imbalance in the brain sends the wrong messages to the body. Depression and heart disease are deadly companions and can lead to each other. They are a frightening hand in glove combination.

Despite the real connection between these two dangerous illnesses, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated. Persons with heart disease, their families and friends, and even their doctors and cardiologists may miss depression's warning signs. And when treatment is given it is often not enough. They think that these feelings just go along with heart disease.  When my husband had emergency open heart surgery, there was never any discussion about depression which went along with heart problems.  I was on top of it and worked to make sure my husband was able to get all the support he needed. Others may not know what to do and they get no help from the doctors.

The impact of depression and heart disease is enormous. Depression is the leading cause of disability and heart disease is by far the leading cause of death in the US. One in three Americans will die of some form of heart disease. So it is very important that we all become aware that depression and heart disease are associated with sickness and death and proper treatment must be given. Newer anti depressants don't have the negative complications that the previous ones did.

Treatment for depression helps you manage heart problems better and have a better quality of life. It should be made very clear to people with heart problems complicated by depression that exercise is one of the best treatments for both.

Treatment for depression helps people manage both diseases, making survival and enjoyment of life possible. Keep your heart and mind safe and sound. Total health is in your future.

Why do you think suicide and depression is more prevalent among men than women?

I've heard of these statistics and was curious to hear some answers on the subject. One theory is that becuase us guys tend to suppress our emotions and feelings all the time and not talk about them, it can eventually lead to negative things like burst of rage, anger, depression, etc. do you think that's plausible?

Please review the citations I have provided for complete objective rigorous discussion.

To address the issue of the higher prevalence of depression in women, please allow me to quote directly from the first citation listed:

"Epidemiological surveys demonstrate that unipolar depression is more common in females than in males. Gender-specific cultural and social factors may contribute to the female preponderance..."

"...Therefore, we conclude that social factors are inducing part of the preponderance of females among depressed cases."

With respect to differences in suicidality, it is widely recognized that in the US females attempt suicide at a higher rate than males, however, men successfully complete suicide at a significantly higher rate. This difference is felt to be on the basis of method employed in suicidality, i.e. females are more prone to use less violent methods to obtain the result, e.g. overdosing on pills with failure to complete suicide versus males being more prone to use more definitive methods in their attempts, e.g. the use of a pistol in order to complete suicide, and they succeed at a higher rate than do women. Please use the second source citation to verify this.

Genetic Depression Disorders Quotes:

He who fears he shall suffer already suffers what he fears. By Montaigne Find out about Genetic Depression Disorders

Biological Factors That Contribute to Depression

Many people are pre-disposed to depression because of their own biological makeup making their risk of suffering from this condition much greater then those who do not share these risk factors. There are four main biological factors that can increase a persons risk for depression and these include (1) genetic factors, (2) biochemical factors, (3) alterations in hormonal regulation and, (4) sleep abnormalities.

Genetic Factors

Studies done with twins have shown that genetic factors play a role in the development of depressive disorders. There have been a number of studies done that show that the average rate of shared mood disorders among identical twins is 45% to 60%. This means if one twin suffers from depression, or any other mood disorder, there is a 45% to 60% chance that the other twin will also be affected. Contrast this with fraternal twins where the percentage falls of drastically to only 12%.

Moods disorders are inheritable for some people. This also means that those who are genetically susceptible to mood disorders can have an earlier age of onset, a greater rate of suffering other disorders in addition to depression and an increased risk of recurrent illnesses. However, any genetic factors that are present must interact with environmental factors for depression to develop.

Biochemical Factors

The brain contains billions of neurons and is a highly complex organ. There is a lot of evidence that points to the idea that depression is a biological or chemical disorder where central nervous system neurotransmitter abnormalities are a probable cause of clinical depression. These neurotransmitter abnormalities may be the result of inherited or environmental factors, or even of other medical conditions, such as cerebral infarction, hypothyroidism, AIDS, or substance abuse.

Specific neurotransmitters in the brain are believed to be related to mood altered states. It was initially believed that the two main neurotransmitters involved were serotonin and norepinephrine. With new research though it is now thought that depression results from the dysregulation of a number of neurotransmitter systems in addition to serotonin and norepinephrine. The dopamine, acetylcholine, and GABA systems are also believed to be involved in the pathophysiology of major depression.

Alterations in Hormonal Regulation

Although there is still inconclusive evidence that hormones can play a role in depression. The most studied neuroendocrine characteristic that relates to depression has been hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. Evidence of increased cortisol secretion is apparent in 20% to 40% of depressed outpatients and 40% to 60% of depressed inpatients. Results of a dexamethasone suppression test are abnormal in about 50% of patients with depression, which indicates hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. However, the findings of this test may also be abnormal in people with obsessive-compulsive disorders and other medical conditions. Significantly, patients with psychotic major depression are among those with the highest rates of nonsuppression of cortisol on the dexamethasone suppression test.

Sleep Abnormalities

Sleep electroencephalogram abnormalities may be evident in 40% to 60% of outpatients and up to 90% of inpatients during a major depressive episode. People prone to depression tend to have a pre-mature loss of sleep, slow delta wave sleep and altered rapid eye movement (REM) latency. The phase of REM sleep associated with dreaming occurs earlier in two thirds of people with bipolar and major depressive illnesses. This sign is referred to as reduced REM latency and is consistent with the expected manifestation of an inherited trait. Reduced REM latency and deficits in slow-wave sleep typical persist following recovery from a depressed episode. Data also suggests that depressed patients without this sign are not likely to respond to treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, which suppress early REM sleep.

There are many factors that contribute to depression, many of which are biochemical in nature. Those that are biologically induced can be treated with different prescription drugs but as with anything relating to human emotion and chemical makeup answering one question as to why brings up more questions that remain unanswered.

What is wrong? Is it depression?

ok, background info. Im 14, a girl, and im not aware of any genetic disorders that run in my family.

Whats been happening is that i find it hard to talk to my friends if they do anything to change. like one girl started wearing makeup and she has always made fun of me for wearing like only a little bit of eyeliner. but then she turns around and does the exact opposite. another friend is supposed to go to a program that would require her to go to high school at the college. she wanted me to go, and i said id consider, but i changed my mind when i considered all the things i would miss. she got mad and stopped talking to me. then she decided to bring my religion and everything into the fight. i could deal with the makeup thing, but this really messed me up. i feel achy and tired al the time and im usually very hyper and upbeat. i also feel like the world has turned its back on me.

Is there any hope for me?

BTW im already on Lexipro (spell?) for sleep

I promise you that most teenagers go through exactly this. There are always ups and downs and drama like this during highschool, there's always someone being hypocritical or bitchy, and you just need to weather it. Everyone experiences the feeling that the world's against them at some stage, but there is absolutely and without-a-doubt hope. These things will pass, if now soon then in a few years, when your friends are older and more mature. There will always be people around like this, but they're always larger in number and more intense during your school years.

Learn to rise above it. If people want to be petty and hypocritical and make themselves unhappy, then let them. Don't let yourself get dragged down into it, or you'll end up unhappy too. Pride yourself on being the mature one with better things to do than worry about minor issues like this.

Find someone you can talk to about this, vent about it to your parents, or write it down in a journal, get it out of your system.

Good luck.

Depression Family Doctor Quotes:

Some patients I see are actually draining into their bodies the diseased thoughts of their minds. By Zacharty Bercovitz Find out about Depression Family Doctor

Diagnosis of Depression

If any person shows any symptom of having depression, then he should visit his family doctor as soon as possible. The doctor might need to perform other tests to make sure that the symptoms are for depression and not of any other illness having common symptoms. These tests are required to perform because there are no proper tests for depression. It can only be detected with the presence of symptoms such as irritation, sleeping and eating disorders, consistent pain in the body and even hallucinations. The level of depression a person is suffering from can be detected with the help of general questions regarding the mental health of the person. Different systems are developed by American psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization to measure depression. A good diagnosis of depression should also include the questions regarding the history of the person suffering from depression. The doctor should also acquire knowledge about loss of some dear ones of the person, loss of job or intake of any drugs. The following category of persons generally needs depression treatment:

1.People with personal or family history of depression.

2.People suffering from a lot of diseases.

3.People suffering from symptoms having no clear medical cause.

4.People who visits their doctors in quick successions.

After the diagnosis of depression, the doctors use specifiers to obtain the detailed information about the health of the person regarding the most effective treatment, the course and the duration of treatment. The specifiers related to different types of depression are as follows:

Mild: The specifier is mild if the person shows some symptoms of depression, but he can perform his routine work without any extra effort.

Moderate: The specifier is moderate if the person shows symptoms of depression and needs extra efforts to perform his routine work.

severe: The specifier is severe if the person shows most of the symptoms of depression. In this case, the person may not be able to perform his routine work and may also be affected with hallucination and can also attempt to suicide.

Melancholic feature: The specifier is said to be melancholic, if the person feels lack of energy and uninterested in performing activities, which he earlier used to perform with excitement. In this case, the person also suffers from sleeping and eating disorders.

Catatonic feature: In this type of specifier, the person may show aimless activities or copying the behavior of others.

Depression help is needed when it starts affecting life. Depression symptoms are very much similar to other common disorders.

Will my family doctor refer me to a psychiatrist?

I have been have some serious problems with mood swings, depression, losing and gaining weight, very decreased sex drive, fatigue, and no energy. I thought it was my birth control pills but, I switched pills because I thought I was having side effects. After 3 months, my symptoms are still here. Will my doctor send me to a psychologist? because I am beginning to think that I am having some serious mental problems.

If you need to see a therapist, you might get a referral. But your symptoms sound like hypoglycemia to me. It may not be your head, but your diet.
Fatigue, insomnia, mental confusion, anxiety, nervousness, mood swings, faintness, headaches, depression, phobias, heart palpitations, a craving for sweets, cold hands and feet, forgetfulness, dizziness, blurred vision, inner trembling, outbursts of temper, sudden hunger, allergies, and crying spells are all symptoms of low blood sugar.
You can get drugs for depression, or you can change how and what you eat.

Depression Treatment Guidelines Quotes:

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. By Elbert Hubbard Find out about Depression Treatment Guidelines

Bipolar Disorder Treatment - 5 Clinical Procedures And 7 Effective drugs

It is usually women who are associated as having mood swings as they are said to unpredictable, unlike men. Men can exhibit mood swings, although it may not be as noticeable. We all accept that everyone has the occasional mood swing which is normal in life. If you are having unexplained changes in mood swings or emotions which are out of proportion, it is time for you to think about consulting your doctor or a psychiatrist.

'Consulting with a psychiatrist' is what most people do not like to hear, or choose to ignore. Anyone seeing a professional such as a psychiatrist is thought to have a mental illness, but seeing one could be the answer to your problems which can be addressed.

Once you have consulted a doctor or a psychiatrist, they can evaluate you and your condition. They can then determine how extensive your disorder is so that they can prescribe the correct medicine and suitable treatment for yourself. This is so that your condition can be stabilised.

Having been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, you will have get used to this long term illness. It won't just disappear - you have to deal with the episodes that you will experience from one day to the next. It is frightening at first but once you have learnt to accept it, you can begin to take control again, even though there is no cure. Medication will help to normalise your life again so that you can cope.

The onset of Bipolar Disorder usually starts in adolescence or the early 20's, and is found to be complex. It could be a few years before the precise diagnosis is recognised. A bipolar patient will find this a disadvantage as they cannot get the right medication or treatment until it is realised.

Diagnosing and treating this disorder is done by a psychiatrist or psychologist. A person is first interviewed to find out more about them, with a clinical investigation which will determine their mental status, and the type of bipolar symptoms the patient is experiencing. The clinical procedures that need to be carried out are as follows:

1. MCMI III
2. MMPI II
3. ISS
4. YMRS
5. SRMI

These tests can either be done in outpatients department or in the hospital, and are either written tests or verbal ones. The DSM-IV provides the guidelines for diagnosing all types of Mental Illnesses and Bipolar Disorder. Guidelines show that Bipolar Disorder is when a person has an elevated mood with unusual irritability over a week with also at least three mania symptoms. Unless a person is just irritable the requirement will be at least four symptoms.

The symptoms in adolescents and children both differ. Children usually exhibit features which seem psychotic and often mistakenly diagnosed as schizophrenia. Rather than being elated, they usually exhibit more aggression and irritability, which are ongoing symptoms that are chronic, whereas adults have episodes of these occurrences.

To treat Bipolar Disorder, a patient is usually given medications. Mood stabilisers are administered and combined with anticonvulsants, antidepressants and antipsychotics. By giving these medications bipolar episodes are regulated.

Medications

1. Carbamazepine - An anticonvulsant which is prescribed together with mood stabilisers. This medicine may be prescribed if a person isn't responding well to lithium therapy.

2. Electroconvulsive Therapy - If medications have been unsuccessful in treating depression in bipolar, this therapy is very successful. Anaesthesia and a muscle relaxant is given when the treatment to avoid the risk of convulsions.

3. Lithium - The most widely used prescribed medication as it is the oldest for bipolar disorder, but it isn't recommended for patients that have mixed mania. Lithium is sometimes used in combination with benzodiazepines or neuroleptics.

4. MAOIs - This drug helps to block the action of monoamine oxidase. You should avoid eating foods that contain a huge amount of tyramine, so that you don't get any undesireable side effects.

5. Neuroleptics - These are used to control symptoms of mania with drugs such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol. Patients need to be cautious of the severe side effects that neuroleptics have.

6. SSRIs - These help to regulate depression and examples are flouxetine, paroxetine and sertraline.

7. Valproate - For those that have rapid cycles of bipolar, this medication has proven to be effective. It is used on its own or with other drugs.

Antidepressants are given short term as with some patients they can stimulate mania episodes.

Bipolar Disorder is said to be biological, a claim made by many experts in the field, for which therapy is required. They offer Counselling and Psychotherapy alongside medications which are necessary to control the illness. Patients and families are helped to gain a better understanding and the importance of taking medications regularly to cut down on the risk of suicide.

Once your condition is controlled by and stabilised by medications, you should continue to take them to avoid any relapse. Bipolar Disorder will be with you throughout your life, so medication and treatment is paramount.

Tom Cruise doesn't believe in medicine...?

I am not asking this to be sarcastic. I'm really wondering. Tom Cruise gave Brooke Shields grief for taking medicine for post-partum depression. He stated his beliefs regarding medicine as a scientologist. I was just wondering, how is it that they had a test tube baby? Wouldn't that require doctors and medical treatments? Isn't that something that isn't considered natural? I'm just curious how that fits in the guidelines and it is okay for him. Does anyone know?
So it is only mental health medication he doesn't like? I appreciate that response. Thank you. But why does he get to decide what medicine is okay and what is not?

I think it wasn't medicine but psychiatry that he (and Scientology) had a problem with.

The practice of psychiatry interferes with the testing/cleaning/whatever process that Scientology makes its money off of.
