Depression Us Quotes:

" There are two days in the week about which and upon which I never worry... Yesterday and Tomorrow. By Robert Jones Burdette Find out about Depression Us

Living with a demon called depression

Today I'm depressed! He actually started working. Everything was fine. I had been well for weeks, maybe even happy. But something happened. In fact, nothing happened! I been ignored! If someone had insulted me verbally or physically assaulted me, I could have responded immediately, either verbally or physically, but I was ignored and he has played in my mind so I became depressed about it.

Now, you might think "Oh my God, what's wrong, you're not depressed, you sulk like a child two years! And yes, I agree, it's a really stupid thing to become depressed, I know, honestly, I do know that!

But that is often how my depression begins. Something useless, something stupid, which I should be able to ignore or simply ignored, suddenly has a life of its own and takes over my mind and switches off the light of happiness, than to replace with long dark shadows persistent unhappiness, sadness and despair.

Chemical or physical. What is the cause?

If the problem with depression is something chemicals like hormones in the brain, why would it triggered by something as stupid as to be ignored?

If it is a chemical problem surely all depression will happen in his spare time, as if you were watching a movie really funny. One minute you'd be laughing his head off, then the next minute trying to jump out the window and have to end it all.

I have no doubt that there are chemicals involved. All Emotions are chemical by nature. Happiness, sadness, love, lust. They are all made possible by chemicals / hormones in our brain is running at certain times due to external influences, such as seeing a beautiful woman in a short skirt walking by .... POW ... Instant Chemical Lust flood the brain!

If I assume that the "cause" is a combination of physical external influences, which causes an internal reaction that goes on chemicals associated with preparing the body for anything that might happen.

And maybe sometimes it works the other way. Our clock may decide that the internal spring and summer are perfect times to get horny and start looking for this special boy or a girl!

Why does it affect some more than others?

My current struggle of depression has been turned off, I think, just being ignored by a certain person, maybe at some point in time when I felt vulnerable.

Someone else might think I'm just being a wimp. Perhaps they, and perhaps you too would not be the least affected by such an incident. You could if you are a victim of depression, even think that what I feel does not even deserve to be called depression!

You might even think I should rename this article "Living with a demon called Sulking!"

It is a matter of personal opinion.

Whether or not my depression is better or worse than perhaps your depression or someone elses, is not really important. It is certainly no question for me. In my case, I'm depressed and nothing you or anyone else think this will change.

Last night I felt terrible. I mean really bloody awful. I hated the world, I hated the people ... Yes, even you! And I hated myself. I hated myself because that all the things mentioned above.

When you are depressed, or at least when I'm depressed, I start by blaming the person or people, or the event, which I think is the cause of my current depression. But soon after I finished ranting and raving, or sometimes just sitting quietly (as if pouting), I began to reproach myself. I blame myself for not reacting more positively. I blame myself for not speaking my mind. I blame myself for not sticking to myself. I blame myself to put myself in a stupid situation. I blame myself for not learning from similar past events. I blame myself blaming myself and not punch the person responsible for my depression on the nose.

Plus I think I become more depressed. Until very quickly, which was perhaps a very small event triggered a mild depression, becomes much exaggerated in my mind and mild depression spreads like a huge storm dark cloud that stretches over the horizon casting its "shadow on everything I see and know.

Is there a cure?

How do you drag a depression? (Perhaps we should ask the government! :-) ) Well, it is not easy! Today, I dragged myself out of bed early. I went shopping. I not really need something, but I found myself with several packets of biscuits. Now you see I'm a little weight on the weight. But I managed to lose a stone in less than three months, which is great! However, I found that doing something bad, it's a great way distract the mind long enough to clear the clouds of depression. It is not easy, it is not easy by any means, and it may take several packets of biscuits and chocolate chip muffins with large quantities of tea before starting to improve.

I do not recommend everyone, especially if you have a weight problem. If you follow a diet and I think that the consumption of five packets of biscuits can actually make you more depressed, then I suggest you do something else nasty place.

You may find that entering a wooded area, taking off all your clothes, then run, screaming "I hate the world but I love my fat ass!" could well be enough to start emptying your depression.

Always be aware that things will get better!

I know it is not easy. But you must keep in mind that no matter how things seem to be right now, they may not be as bad for ever!

It's something I constantly keep telling myself that when I get depressed, or just a little tired of the world.

Everything is temporary. Even the mountains are reduced over time. Your problems, my problems, the problems of countries, are all temporary.

If there is absolutely nothing you can do now to facilitate your situation, if there is absolutely no action, you can take to relieve your dark feelings, if run naked shouting that you hate the world, but love your fat ass has had no positive effect on you at all .... all you have to do is be patient and wait .... long enough ... and I promise you that whatever the problem is that you have right now .... Cancer limiting or terminal illness to others .... it will pass.

But ofcourse, if is an action you can take, like maybe make an apology to someone, or talk to someone who has upset you, or any action anything that will help solve your current problem, or at least put the issue on the public square so that you can deal with it physically or verbally, and is much better than sitting in a dark room pus on it.

Writing this article has done me good. I do not feel as bad as now, when I started it. I certainly do not feel happy and joyful, yet. But I'm in recovery. And I hope, I really hope that at least one sentence made you smile or give you an idea of how to start your recovery. I'm sorry there is nothing scientifically proven in this article. It's just a load of things in my mind depressed. Maybe I'll read through it in a few days and decides to delete it, I do not know.

So, is there an answer? Depression can be cured without stuffing dangerous sedatives, or eating in FIG destroy cookies? Is it possible to just laugh you out of depression?

I honestly and obviously have no idea. Once the depression leaves me I'll probably be OK for some time to come. I do not suffer from depression regularly. It happens sometimes. Sometimes it does not seem to be a reason for that ... it takes a little more. And then, just as suddenly, it can be passed and I wonder why everyone went.

Maybe I'm a wimp. Perhaps your depressions are much worse than mine. Maybe you thought This article was useless, because it was written by an egocentric, vain, useless, fat, no sulking! Well, for now, I agree with you. But I hope that tomorrow or maybe next week, I do not care what you think, if you have not been helped by a somehow in this case, my depression has been worth it.

The Depression News Quotes:

There are people who are always anticipating trouble and in this way they manage to enjoy many sorrows that never really happen to them. By Josh Billings Find out about The Depression News

An Introduction to What is Depression

This book is for the 'Average Joe' in this country who likes information given in an understandable way. You want it kept simple and you don't need to read about all the technical stuff behind the subject. Depression happens to the average Joe all the time and most of us who have it don't get treated for it. That's a shame because depression is one of the most treatable diseases. I hope that if you understand it and know that it isn't something to hide, cover up, or ignore, your can have the power to beat it.

At the very least, 30% of the American population suffer from a depression.  The economic cost is out of sight but the cost in suffering for those who are depressed can never really be counted. Depression can not only destroy persons suffering with it, but everyone around them who cares about them. A serious major depression can ruin a family if left untreated. This is really bad news! The good news is that there is quick treatment and relief available for depression sufferers.   However, the majority of people who get depressed do not get treated. We have now learned that depression is mostly due to a chemical imbalance or mix-up in the brain. These mix-ups can be treated with medications. The medications available now can help you save your life or that of someone you love. Depression is treatable, just like high blood pressure, diabetes, and an ulcer.  It is simply a matter of reaching out for help, getting the right medication, and following directions.  Think of this as like having a car that goes on the blink. You wouldn't ignore trouble signs like an engine light flashing and think you could just keep on driving. You would investigate what was going on, get someone with training to check out your car, and fix whatever went wrong.  Same thing applies if you develop a temperature over 102, are dripping with sweat, and become weaker and weaker. You know something has to be done, and done quickly.  It is exactly the same when you experience depression.  Something is terribly wrong and you must act. I used to tell my new clients to think of themselves coming in to see me for a tune up, not a major overhaul. You won't need the big overhaul if you take action quickly.

How do you know if you have depression?  There are some things that really stand out which can help you decide if a depression is going on.  It involves your mood, your thoughts, your appetite, your sleep, and your feelings of self esteem. It is not just the blahs or the blues. Everybody has a few days or more when they feel down and sad. This is different.  It's not like the normal experience of sadness you have when things go wrong or when you are disappointed and hurt.  This is an emotional pit you've fallen into which affects your family, your job, and your whole life. It's a horrible feeling of hopelessness, of failure, of knowing that there is no way to make things better. You actually do 'drag' yourself along, going through the motions at home and work, thinking that you would rather hide in a cave and avoid everyone.  If you are depressed you cannot just 'get it together', put a smiley face on, square your shoulders, and get a stiff upper lip. No matter how hard you try to lift yourself up, you can't. And it tends to get worse, not better.  If you don't get treatment, this can last for months or even years. Why put yourself through something this awful when the right medication can get you back on track, able to feel better quickly?

There are some facts that will help you agree that it is good to know about depression, understand the symptoms, and get the treatment which will help. Depression is not something that you have made up in your head. It's feeling "down" and "low" and "hopeless" for months at a time.

Depression can affect people at any age, of any race, any ethnic, or any economic group. It doesn't just happen to soft people and is truly an equal opportunity illness. It is not a form of weakness but is a serious health problem, like any other illness. It is not something which should be hidden or anything to be embarrassed about. The names of famous people who have suffered from depression like David Letterman, Mike Wallace, Terry Bradshaw, Wynona Ryder, Delta Burke, Tipper Gore, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and so many more tell us that celebrities who seem to have all the breaks have suffered with depression. Depression is a thief. It comes into your life, steals your energy and self esteem, and whispers to you that you are worthless. It shoves you down deeper into the bottom of the pit where no angels want to go. It can drive you to actually think about suicide, getting it over with, and ending the agony which has made your life pure hell.

This book is intended to help you understand depression by giving you information that you will be able to understand. You will not have to have a Ph.D. to get through these chapters and by the time you have finished, you will know a lot.  After reading this paragraph you won't have to think about 'genetic implications' or such things as 'human leukocyte antigen'. You may even surprise yourself with how much you have learned about depression and how to deal with it. I hope you will feel comfortable reading and rereading chapters that seem to have real meaning for you. You are the reason this book has been written.

How yall good ol boys feel bout that there Bush feller and new regulations of his?

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration Monday proposed the most far-ranging overhaul of the financial regulatory system since the stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080331/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/fed_overhaul

What's your point? Bush and his administration are trying to do something to help the economy...too bad the liberals in Congress will never allow that to happen. If the evil Republicans managed to fix the economy before November it might cost the demoncrats the election. Just another sad example of how liberal demoncrats are truly looking out for the "common man". BTW ol is spelled ole...if you're going to pretend you're from the south at least get the spelling right.

My Depression Jesus Quotes:

We are more disturbed by a calamity which threatens us than by one which has befallen us. By John Lancaster Spalding Find out about My Depression Jesus

Depression Made Me Its Slave

I was watching a television program when a commercial break began explaining all the signs of depression. Without even knowing what was happening to me I felt myself being pulled into the description of hopelessness and fear. It was like a huge life-zapping suction cup that grabbed my attention and pulled at the very fiber of my thinking chaining me to everything that was wrong with my life.

Moments later the voice that directed all of my emotions and bunched all my pain into one massive ache explained why I needed to deaden the pain with anti-anxiety medicine. I was in the throws of depression; it was if the writers of the advertisement knew exactly how I was feeling. Suddenly a Spirit light entered my thinking and pulled me out of the depths of pain and instructed me that Depression was my master and I had become its Slave.

The voice of depression gnawed at a young mother's conscience pulling every thought of negativity and demanding a repeat performance of everything that she did wrong as a mother. Her three and a half year old daughter was still not potty trained. Her son was surfing the net and was looking at a pornographic site. Just yesterday she found out she was pregnant and now the list she had composed over every failure she felt as a parent surfaced and wrestled her to the ground in tears. She couldn't be a mother again!

An elderly man had been alone for years and he was desperate to find someone to love him again. In his anxiety he played with thoughts of who would want him now. He was old and worn out and even his family didn't have time for him. How could he find someone who would want to share his life with him? Every waking thought pulled at his mind and brought him to his knees reminding him constantly of his loneliness. Depression had captured him and brought him to despair with thoughts of suicide.

A woman sits before her computer and tabulates a pile of bills that are waiting to be paid. She looks at her bank account and then once again at the bills and realizes that no matter what she paid, she wouldn't have enough. Her head bounds low and a darkness of depression spreads engulfing her thinking with thoughts of hopelessness. No matter how hard she works she will never find enough money to pay all the bills.

Satan captures the minds of those who refuse to acknowledge there is a God. There is no hope for people who don't have faith. There is no future for those who depend on themselves alone without God. When you are not aware that you are fighting a spiritual war inside your head then you are mastered by Satan and held captive to negative thinking and depression.

Matthew 13: 14&15, "So the prophecy of Isaiah applies to them: 'This people will listen and listen, but not understand; they will look and look, but not see, because their minds are dull, and they have stopped up their ears and have closed their eyes. Otherwise, their eyes would see, their ears would hear, their minds would understand, and they would turn to me, says God, and I would heal them.'"

Too many people today are unaware of the unseen spiritual realm of heavenly beings surrounding our present day world. Beings that are talking constantly in your subconscious telling you that you are a loser. Voices condemning your every thought and telling you that you will always be a failure. These Demon voices relish pushing people into the darkness so they can make them slaves to hopelessness and fear.

When you place your faith in God then you begin to see the truth about the voices that captivate your mind. The Bible has story upon story of people who have been influenced by demons. God sent his only son to save people from these demonic forces. Jesus died for our sins so we would have the Holy Spirit who fights for those who surrender their lives to Him. People who have the Holy Spirit know it is a voice of positive thinking. A voice that gives inspiration, guidance, and wonder working power.

When you understand what you are fighting then you are able to break free and win the battle over your mind. Your eyes begin to see and your ears begin to hear the voice of love.

Matthew 13: 16, "As for you, how fortunate you are! Your eyes see and your ears hear."

Jesus brings us to a new light of understanding. He lifts the veil covering up the game of life that teaches us the difference between right and wrong and shows us the evil we are fighting against. He tells us about how temptation can lead us to over spend. He sets us free to believe in miracles by promising that He will divinely intervene on our behalf to help us meet our financial needs. He gives better paying jobs and promotions.

He inspires parents on how to teach their children. He helps them not to keep a list of wrongs of what their children have done and to never give up on them. He lets them enjoy their families by living one moment at a time. He inspires a love that surrounds a family and gives them the strength to face each problem.

He gives hope to the elderly. He inspires older men and women to teach Bible classes. He gives them hobbies that they enjoy. He takes the hand of the aged and guides them down paths to help them mentor the young. No one is ever alone because God surrounds each single person's life with love and a friendship that will never end. He loves people and He wants them to win the battle over evil that conspires to separate them from the joy of following Jesus' plan for their lives.

Matthew 11: 28-30, "Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light."

People today allow depression to rule their lives. They go to doctors to deaden the pain. They curl up in a ball of protection trying to hide from the demands of everyday life. But with God's help everything changes.

Romans 12: 2, "Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let 'God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind'. Then you will be able to know the will of God-what is good and pleasing to him and is perfect."

Depression is a selfish act. To give into the darkness of hopelessness is to give up on God. To allow a demon to influence your life and make you give up is to lose your game of life and to give victory to evil. When depression makes you its slave you are defeated by simple problems, like a child potting in his pants, a bill that you forgot to pay or a son who didn't show up to take his elderly father out because his job called him away suddenly. Depression is a prison that allows a person to feel sorry for themselves.

2 Corinthians 10: 4&5, "The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments; we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every 'thought captive and make it obey Christ'.

Depression gives us permission to feel bad. It robs you of your joy and sentences you to a prison of helplessness and fear. God tells us to fight against it and make our minds think according to the knowledge of God. Whenever we are fearful we must sing praises. Whenever we are feeling alone or abandoned we must read our Bibles and apply the light to our lives. Whenever we face difficulties with children we must pray and believe that God will give us the strength to win the battle with unconditional love one moment at a time.

Philippians 4: 8, "In conclusion, my brothers, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you."

Baby boomers economic depression is caused in part by the sudden realization that early retirement causes pressure on the family budget. Jobs are harder to get and funds raised from the sale of a business are soon spent.

There is a workable self-improvement breakthrough formula for this challenge. This three part formula requires you to make some quality choices to turn your situation around. It will happen over time.

At the center of this formula is the assumption that you really want to defeat baby boomers economic depression and develop a program that keeps it away from your life for the rest of your days.

They key issue for all baby boomers who want this outcome is building and maintaining a "desire fire" for it. You can use work experiences to create self-improvement programs which will give you the income to get a mature years you are happy with as you celebrate your new lifestyle.

Use the three point formula below . It will change your outlook on life for the rest of your days.

1. Get to the Root of The Challenge

The truth is baby boomers economic depression does not start in your wallet. It starts in your head. And involves your heart as well as the words of your mouth and the actions of your body. Your response to a change in your economic circumstances will bring you a lifestyle of defeat or victory.

Look at the plight of baby boomers who have given their life to a workplace only to have their job sent offshore. 25 years of service counts for nothing. What do you do?

First up you do not panic. That creates a spiral of depression that can prove fatal. You need to recognize the power of your thoughts over your future.

You can't stop bad news in the form of a job layoff or a failed business. You can however choose your response. You can lay down and accept it as a defeat or, the best option, is to decide to fight back in your thought life. The appearance of depressing events often can not be prevented but the length of time you stay depressed is determined by you. You choose how long it lasts.

You need to be clear on the required attitude here. It's not all about getting mad with your boss or creditors. It's about picking yourself up from this depressing "valley floor experience" and asking yourself what you can do to reinvent yourself. This is where you start to defeat baby boomers economic depression.

2. Take Control of Your Baby Boomer Economic Future

You will have better success in reinventing yourself when you replace your negative thoughts with positive ones. This is the foundation for your baby boomer self-improvement program. Expect to find a job that's better than you lost and you will find it.

Keep the hope in your head and faith in your heart that your best years are still ahead. Your hope will be rewarded.

3. Always Look for Opportunities to Better Use Your "Assets"

Your "Assets" are the skills, abilities and talents you've developed over the years and you've got plenty of them.

Use your best storytelling mode to tell others, at Church, in locations where you do voluntary work, of your abilities. Always have a pleasant attitude and highlight your ongoing search for jobs to benefit others with your skills.

You get the picture. Spread the news that you are available for hire and open to any business opportunity that may come your way. Seek and you'll. Remember also sometimes you may need perseverance as you apply the Bible truth "knock and it shall be opened unto you". That's how doors of economic opportunity get opened.

May you join the ranks of those who are fighting back against baby boomers economic depression and winning the battle.

Do you think that we be headed for a depression like 1929? Look below at the news.?

Todays news: The housing crisis. A bank failure. Oil shocks. The credit crunch. A job slump. The mortgage meltdown. Feeble auto sales. The stock market slide. A sour economic outlook was delivered to Congress on Tuesday

And still - we are not even in a recession. No, we learned from that fiasco and there are now semi-independent government institutions designed to prevent large down (and up) turns plus we are not on the disastrous gold standard anymore that had a lot to do with it. Unless oil supply is drastically reduced, we will not go into a depression (although, the ominous signs of a Chinese economic meltdown is another possibility were it to occur as it looks like it will).

Great Depression News Quotes:

If you treat every situation as a life and death matter you'll die a lot of times. By Dean Smith Find out about Great Depression News

Understanding My Great Depression

I never understood depression, until I was 57. It happened this way:

Two days after my “visit” to the emergency ward I met with a urologist. He told me several things can cause blood in the urine, including a bladder infection. He gave me a prescription for antibiotics and scheduled an appointment with me so he could look into my bladder—something I dreaded.

I asked, “Can’t we do the appointment sooner? I don’t like having to wait almost a week.”

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t.”

The next day I had a body scan with contrast. A few days later Dr. Sherman called. He said the results were encouraging, but he wanted me to take a PET scan.

I asked, “If the results are so encouraging why should I take a PET scan?”

“Just so we’re sure about the spots on your lung.”

Dr. Sherman, it seemed, wasn’t being honest with me. I understood he didn’t want to scare me, but my having cancer was a real possibility and, well, I just didn’t like the idea of doctors thinking they could fool me into believing I had nothing to worry about.

Did they think I hadn’t heard of WebMD.com?

I got a phone call from an old co-worker, Dan. Dan and I had never been close friends. To be honest, I had trouble with his radical politics, and with his bitterness. Dan was a failed artist, and I guess I was scared of becoming one too. Still, there was a bond between us: the Twelve Steps. Dan was a recovering alcoholic, though I suspected he occasionally fell off the wagon. (He often called in sick.)

“Randy, I ran into one of the guys you worked with. He told me you left Frank.”

“Yeah, I had a run-in with his alcoholic son about a year ago. When Frank got back from California he took my side of the argument. This infuriated Frank Jr. For the next year he was always on my case, always putting me down. Then last week he told me his father was semi-retired, and that, since he was now in charge, it was my job to drive cars with one headlight out. I told him I couldn’t do that, so he told me to leave. Dan, at this point in my life I just can’t work for an active alcoholic. Sometimes I just hate them, though I know I shouldn’t.”

“I hear you.”

“I have more news.” I filled Dan in on my medical condition.

“I’m really sorry to hear that. It sounds like you’re doing all the right things to take care of yourself. I hope everything turns out okay. I knew someone who was diagnosed with advanced bladder cancer fifteen years ago. They built him a new bladder. He’s doing fine.”

“That’s the one thing I’m grateful for: Bladder cancer, as long as it hasn’t spread, is treatable.”

I remembered that, for an alcoholic, Dan was an exception: He listened.

“I have medical news too,” Dan said. “Ever since my hernia operation I’ve been having some trouble, so I have to go back and have a second procedure. It’s nothing major. I won’t even have to say overnight in the hospital.”

“When are you going in?”

“In a week.”

Though I was concerned for Dan, I was envious. I wished I had his medical condition rather than mine.

We agreed to stay in touch. I hung up feeling glad that, in spite of our political differences, Dan and I had found a way to be friendly.

Finally: the morning of my bladder exam. I didn’t feel very scared, probably because I was still in denial, the way I had been in denial about so many things: my fear, my vulnerability, and my lack of self-worth.

To fast forward ahead: my bladder exam was negative. I didn’t have bladder cancer. One more scan to go.

Also negative. I didn’t have lung or any other type of cancer. Relieved, I was sure I’d feel great and finally leave my resentments and regrets behind

I didn’t. In fact, I felt a little worse. I wasn’t sure why. At first I assumed it was because I again felt like a victim, this time because I had to start all over again at a new limo company, just because the boss’s son was a drunk.

Again the world seemed so unfair!

But I did start again and found myself surrounded with unfamiliar faces. I felt lonely, like an outsider who didn’t belong.

Baron, a guy I used to work with, called me. “I have bad news,” he said. “Dan didn’t make it.”

“Didn’t make it?”

“Yeah, he died of a heart attack on the table.”

“What? He was only sixty-two.”

“I know.”

“How’d you find out?”

“Dan gave the hospital my name and number. I guess he had no one else.”

Still not believing that Dan had died, I thought of how strange it was that just a week ago I possibly had cancer while Dan had a minor medical condition, and yet Dan passed away, and I was fine.

I thanked Baron for calling. I thought of how Dan died a lonely, failed, bitter artist. More than anything I wished I could rewrite his story, but I knew I couldn’t.

Within a few hours I sank into a quicksand of grief. Surprised at how deep and thick the quicksand was, I wondered, is all my grief over Dan?

Soon I realized much of it was over my cancer-ridden parents’ horrible deaths. Again I wanted to go back in time and make peace with them before they fell sick; and again I didn’t want to face grief, so I wished I could deny it, the way I had denied the grief of my childhood, but then I told myself that feeling grief was a good thing—a sign of my now being strong enough to come to terms with it.

I assumed, therefore, my grief would run its course and retreat, but like a river fed by tributaries, my grief grew stronger and deeper; and so I sensed Dan’s and my parents’ passing weren’t the only source of my grief.

But else what was? Searching for an answer I lay down, closed my eyes and meditated. Soon I came to see that much of the source was my fear of also dying as a lonely, failed, bitter artist.

I looked forward to my monthly therapy session.

It arrived, finally. I told Matt I got a clean bill of health.

“That’s great news.”

I told Matt about Dan, and then spoke about my recent disappointments: failing the eye exam, seeing my book sales go nowhere and again changing jobs because of an alcoholic or drug-addict boss.

“And what does all that mean?” Matt asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Do you feel you caused all those disappointments?”

“No, that’s what makes them even more painful.”

“You do have good news: You’re healthy. Why not focus on that?”

“My feelings are not a telescope. I just can’t adjust them.”

“Do you think it’s in any way connected to your tendency to focus on the negative?”

Annoyed by the question, I answered, “I suppose so.” I went on and told Matt how tired I was of being a chauffeur, of having to fight New York City traffic, of having to sit in a car by myself hour after hour, of having to work for owners who never listened to me. “Chauffeuring was tolerable when I was pursuing a writing career, but where has that career led me: to a dead end walled with debt. I feel I’ve wasted the last twenty years of my life, and wish I had taken that job with FedEx all those years ago. Becoming a writer once seemed like a dream. Now it seems like a curse. I don’t understand how, after my book got some great reviews, the reviews have just stopped. I’m so sick of writing and revising. Besides, I don’t have anything else to say.”

“Do you feel you have options?” Matt asked.

“Not unless I buy them in the stock market.”

“You once talked about moving out West and driving a school bus.”

“Do you think that’s a real possibility?”

“You once thought it was.”

“I feel like this conversation is going in circles.” I looked at the small clock on the desk. The session was almost over. I can’t wait to get out of here.

Matt ended the session by again reminding me that I had a tendency to focus on the negative rather than the positive.

Easy for him to say

A half-hour later I walked into my apartment, and suddenly my grief and disappointment spun like a black hole and pulled me into a pitch-black depression. Again and again I thought—I obsessed—of how nothing ever seemed to work out for me. I assumed, therefore, nothing ever would. I felt cursed, and was sure no one would ever publish my book of fly fishing memoirs. I was also sure that, at fifty-five, I didn’t have any possibility of finding a rewarding career. I dreaded, as if it were the plague, the possibility that I’d have to drive a limousine for the next ten years. I wondered what the purpose of living was. I again read Hamlet’s To Be Or Not To Be soliloquy. His words hit like George Foreman’s punches. To me, living in misery seemed like a coward’s way out. I didn’t see how I’d be able to go to work the next day, or the next.

I reminded myself to stay in the day, but I couldn’t, so I tried to stay in the hour. I couldn’t. I tried to stay in the moment.

The moments moved like a river of molasses.

Somehow I made it through the next day of work, though my pain deepened. Finally home, I thought, for the first time in my life, of the best way of ending it all. The thought of jumping off a building and mutilating my body didn’t sit well with me, so I turned to the thought of taking an overdose of sleeping pills. And if I could get the pills, how would I say goodbye? Easy: I’d write letters to my friends and my sister, explaining why I decided not to go on living. Yes, my decision would cause them, especially my sister, pain, but maybe, just maybe, they would find a way to understand.

I made it through another day of work, and another, and then I thought of how Dan’s death had started a chain reaction of dark feelings. I wondered, How, with all my recovery, did I fall into my first severe depression? Was all my recovery, therefore, a waste of time? If only I could time travel back, to before I was in recovery, then I could again repress and deny my pain.

But like a flowing river, I couldn’t go back.

I thought of my sister, of how she had suffered from depression and had tried, several times, to commit suicide. I thought of how I never understood the pain she, and others, had lived with before modern-day antidepressants—and not just for a few weeks but for many, many years. I thought of how, for the first time in my life, I experienced the suffocating grip of depression, and of how I now understood its crushing pain.

No wonder my sister and Robert and the bosses I’ve worked for, became alcoholics and drug addicts. Should I take antidepressants? But they won’t change that I’m at a dead end in my life. And what about all those people who don’t have writing or dreams and have to work dead-end jobs, many to support families. How do they do it without being depressed? Suddenly I feel so sorry for them. Yes, I had been blessed to have a dream, even though I didn’t always see it.

Finally my work week ended. I spent my days off lying on my couch, watching movies and TV and trying, somewhat successfully, to numb my pain. I went to a Twelve Step meeting. Terribly ashamed of my great depression, I didn’t share about it.

I had to go back to work.

Like an angler wading upstream against a strong current, I made it through another work week, one step, one moment at a time.

I stood on 57th street, waiting for a bus. I remembered often sharing my feelings of disappointment with Matt. I remembered him always asking me questions, him inferring that my feelings were somehow not valid, and therefore my fault.

I got on the bus. The thought hit me: During all my years of therapy, all my years of disappointment, Matt had never shown me the slightest bit of empathy.

Immediately, my depression eased its deadly grip.

A half hour later I walked into my apartment and meditated. Yes, my depression, my thoughts of suicide, my lack of self-worth, must be connected to my not receiving empathy. Yes, during my whole life I’ve probably denied how much I craved empathy; but now, because of my recovery and my recent cancer scare, I’m able, finally, to admit my craving. Has the final layer of my recovery been peeled? Am I now ready to have all my character defects lifted? Yes, I should be grateful. When the other layers were peeled, I also felt pain. And my mother—yes, she too was in so much pain because her parents spent so much empathy on their dying son they had none left for her. No wonder she raged. And my father: his parents were so self-involved they had little empathy for him. No wonder he denied his feelings. If only I had seen this sooner. But I’m not supposed to regret the past. I have to go forward, like a river. Yes, my cancer scare has changed me, though not in the way I expected. It has helped me understand the pain of others and has helped me become more empathetic. Maybe the blood in my urine happened for a reason, like the time my fly line broke and I had to change lines and ended up catching a fish. And maybe, just maybe, a loving Higher Power is helping me take my recovery to a deeper level. Yet still I’m so scared to believe in a loving, active Higher Power. Is it because I’m afraid of being hurt again? Am I that vulnerable? No! I can choose to see myself as someone who’s been through so much, and has always kept getting up, always kept using my pain to help me grow. Yes, my recovery, if I work it, will help me find a way.

I woke up the next morning and ate breakfast. My depression, it seemed, had lifted.

I went to a Twelve Step meeting and shared about my recent depression and how it had changed me. After the meeting several people came up to me and told me how helpful my share was. She thanked me, then again.

Grateful, I thought, Yes, I can still help others. Perhaps I still have important writing to do, important amends to make. True, I don’t see the solutions for my life right now, but in the past, like after my mother died, I also didn’t see solutions, and yet solutions revealed themselves, not in my time but in theirs, and always, I now see, for the better. Who knows, maybe my book will start to sell, and I’ll sell my new book, especially because, after all I’ve been through, I now see the way my memoirs and autobiographical stories are unified. And with all those notes I’ve taken during last fishing season, I can write a new memoir, and though I see only the first half of my story, with spring almost here, perhaps my new adventures will lead me on a path that will show me how my new memoir will end.

Is there going to be another Great Depression? Im kinda worried about that & i dont want it to happen?

From all the talk i hear on the news, lots of people are starting to worry, and I am too. I really hate what Bush has done to this country!! Its all corrupt now, and i want to know if there is going to be another Depression like in the 1930's, or will the true hard working American people get out of this mess we got into?? please share your thoughts, and ease me on my worries about another depression coming through here

Theres a saying regarding this matter: A recession is when your neighbor is out of their job, a depression is when you are out of yours.

Before I get into it here is a quote to help your answer:
Martin Hennecke, of the Tyche Group says: “What investors need to understand, it’s not just about subprime and mortgages it’s really a big crisis of debt on all levels, even government debt hitting the West now and that’s very significant. In our view, it’s just getting started and it will really develop into a very, very severe recession maybe a real depression of the style we saw in 1929.”

Since 1913 the government has been creating paper money out of thin air. . Our dollar is not backed by gold, it has no value. Inflation as we are seeing is the destruction of value. It is the governments program of increasing the supply of money, which devalues the currency and causes the prices to go up. An example is Germany during the 20th century, the runaway inflation came and the middle class was wiped out.

The people are realizing our money is being made out of thin air. We permitted the politicians along with the central bankers to create unlimited money. The notion of a central bank is unconstitutional. Our founding fathers warned us against this. The Founders of this country, and a large majority of the American people up until the 1930s, disdained paper money, respected commodity money, and disapproved of a central bank’s monopoly control of money creation and interest rates. Ironically, it was the abuse of the gold standard, the Fed’s credit-creating habits of the 1920s, and its subsequent mischief in the 1930s, that not only gave us the Great Depression, but also prolonged it. Yet sound money was blamed for all the suffering. That’s why people hardly objected when Roosevelt and his statist friends confiscated gold and radically debased the currency, ushering in the age of worldwide fiat currencies with which the international economy struggles today.

James Madison warned of “The pestilent effects of paper money,” as the Founders had vivid memories of the destructiveness of the Continental dollar. George Mason of Virginia said that he had a “Mortal hatred to paper money.” Constitutional Convention delegate Oliver Ellsworth from Connecticut thought the convention “A favorable moment to shut and bar the door against paper money.” This view of the evils of paper money was shared by almost all the delegates to the convention, and was the reason the Constitution limited congressional authority to deal with the issue and mandated that only gold and silver could be legal tender. Paper money was prohibited and no central bank was authorized.

Printing money as they loosely say is illegal, you could call this counter fitting. The federal reserve created a system where banks only had to hold a fraction of reserves in order to create credit, this is another way the government debases currency. They print money, create credit, as it goes through the banking system we further expand the supply of money, diluting the value of money which is the inflation we see. This is an immoral and unjust tax on the people which many are unaware of.

Greenspan has kept the trend of inflation together longer than anyone. The dollar has been accepted by the world banks as having the value of gold, this created a global bubble which is about to burst as the global economy is suffering along with us.

Dealing with interest rates,Greenspan knew exactly what the consequences of his low interest rates would be. The trap was set to lure in unsuspecting borrowers who felt they could augment their stagnant wages by joining the housing gold rush. It was a great way to mask a deteriorating economy by expanding personal debt.

Alan Greenspan, years before he became Federal Reserve Board Chairman in charge of flagrantly debasing the U.S. dollar, wrote about this connection between sound money, prosperity, and freedom. In his article “Gold and Economic Freedom” (The Objectivist, July 1966), Greenspan starts by saying: “An almost hysterical antagonism toward the gold standard is an issue that unites statists of all persuasions. They seem to sense…that gold and economic freedom are inseparable.” Further he states that: “Under the gold standard, a free banking system stands as the protector of an economy’s stability and balanced growth.” Astoundingly, Mr. Greenspan’s analysis of the 1929 market crash, and how the Fed precipitated the crisis, directly parallels current conditions we are experienced under his management of the Fed. Greenspan explains: “The excess credit which the Fed pumped into the economy spilled over into the stock market- triggering a fantastic speculative boom.” And, “…By 1929 the speculative imbalances had become overwhelming and unmanageable by the Fed.” Greenspan concluded his article by stating: “In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation.” He explains that the “shabby secret” of the proponents of big government and paper money is that deficit spending is simply nothing more than a “scheme for the hidden confiscation of wealth.” Yet here we are today with a purely fiat monetary system, once managed almost exclusively by Alan Greenspan, who once so correctly denounced the Fed’s role in the Depression while recognizing the need for sound money.

In 1955, Economist Victor Lebow wrote in the Journal of Retailing, "Our enormously productive economy demands that we make consumption a way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption. We need things consumed, burned up, replaced, and discarded at an ever-increasing rate.

You have to look into other areas directly related to economics such as documentations of government dealings. Take the inflation for example, how could this be part of a plan from decades ago? After world war two the government worked to create this system with lobbyists.

President Eisenhower's council of economic advisor's chairman said: "Our ultimate purpose is to produce more consumer goods." What? Not to provide health care, jobs, sustainability, but consumer goods, our ULTIMATE purpose? It's no wonder we have more crap than jobs, or opportunities or even hope. It's no wonder we only keep 1% of everything we consume in a year, we have to respond to the call of a plan designed for us. How would this plan be carried out in this day and age without inflation caused by the debasing of our currency... it wouldn't have. Two strategies used for this are: planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence. Google it to learn more.

Signs of this economic plan could be seen anywhere to the trained eye. During the tragedy of 9/11 Mr. Bush could have suggested a number of appropriate things like to pray, grieve, to hope or come together. Instead Bush said we should shop, SHOP! In every act, everywhere we turn there is programming telling us to add to the inflation in a desperate attempt to stop others from realizing the truth.

Take a look around you. School tuition has risen 300% in some states in the last 5 years. Not only gas but food and daily essentials are rising as wages remain the same. More and more people can't afford health care. Our poor and lower class have increased dramatically, unemployment has risen its highest recently since Katrina. Veterans and elderlyI know have been forced out of their homes, admitted to senior developments because the government has gone after the little they have to survive on. The privitization of government, missing billions of tax dollars, the unconstitutional hiring of private military and spending for government spying on its citizens all contribute to this economic collapse caused by paper money devaluing our currency.

If one person cannot prosper in a prosperous country then perhaps things are not what they seem. And we have much more than one person to take care of who faces financial crisis. People don't stamp a word like depression until it happens to them, but its spreading like wild fire and soon everyone will realize there really never is control just the illusion of control.

Take walking or running for example: Walking or running would seem like an every day act, possibly a human triumph in the animal kingdom. But walking is actually a controlled fall in which you manipulate gravity and place your next foot forward to create balance and stability. It isn't something independent in itself, it is a controlled state of falling and at times we may not always be able to hold that state. In fact age wears us thin in this task.

The truth is we have already spun out of control and now we are crashing down. Go invest your money in foreign currency and make sure you have friends outside the states.

A day of worry is more exhausting than a day of work. By John Lubbock Find out about The Depression Newspaper

Era Newspapers, Classic Novels and Student Literary Enrichment

Era Newspapers, Classic Novels and Student Literary Enrichment

The use of era newspapers, i.e., mainly front-pages and reproductions, in social studies core curriculums is a widely accepted teaching aid that enable students’ to comprehend the actual event(s) described in history and other social studies textbooks. But a correlated use, very often ignored, occurs with the employment of era newspapers with the Classic Novels read in English, AP or American /European Literature courses in high school and college classrooms nationally. Historical newspapers can be specifically selected to matrix with the events described, era fashion, and historical personalities for all the major 20th Century novels.

Historical newspapers enhance a students’ understanding of the historical perspective of the author; who typically assumes the reader has a ‘common’ knowledge of the time period. The very select list of standard novels enhanced by reading historical newspapers include: U. Sinclair’s The Jungle, E. Wharton’s The House of Mirth, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Sun Also Rises and/or The Great Gatsby, J. Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, J. Heller’s Catch-22, along with Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, and Otto Frank’s Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. With day to day front-page headlines such as: 150,00 Reported Killed In The Battle Of The Aisne [Taunton Daily Gazette – WWI], Yanks Repulse Hun Raid Near Marne [Grand Forks Herald – WWI], Fanatic Battle Rages in Cassino Ruins [St. Louis Globe-Democrat – WWII Italy], Prohibition and World Court Figures as Nine States Vote [The Dallas Morning News – The Roaring Twenties], Stocks Cast Overboard in 16,000,000 Share Day [Buffalo Evening News – The Depression], Lindbergh Far Beyond Newfoundland [The World (New York City) – The Roaring Twenties],  and Roosevelt Extends Bank Holiday [The Evening Republican – The Depression] are a very select sample of thousands of possibilities.

Era reproduction newspapers provide a student with a semblance of the same news that inspired the author, helped them form a thematic perspective or cause deeper insights. Articles covering the horrors of war, the divisions of class within American society, the economic and human chaos of the Depression, and the cost of living visualized through full-page fashion, car, and grocery advertisements help a student gain a broader familiarity with the day to day life of the novels’ era. If historical newspapers, were used much like mathematical axioms, they could be used as ‘proofs’ for literary events, described horrors, odd personalities, or national opinion(s) expressed in the literary work. The use of both rural and metropolitan front-pages provide a variety of regional cultures, political party ‘opinions’, and ‘a snapshot in time’ reality a student could read about in the very next chapter. Classroom poster sets based on events, descriptions, themes, or as an introduction to each chapter would offer a sense of ‘concrete’ authenticity equal to this XYZ Generations’ Internet, cellular and ‘My Space’ reality. Co-curricula lesson planning using reproduction newspapers offer obvious academic interconnections between Journalism and history, Poetry and Current Events, or an era English/Literature novel and corresponding era history course. Era newspapers are considered as primary source documents and are about as painless a set of original source documents your students will ever be ‘forced’ to read. Your thoughts, feedback and comments are very welcome.

iS SPENDING EXCESSIVELY A SIGN OF DEPRESSION?

I read today in The Sun newspaper that this is a sign of depression, is there any truth in this? I've always done this ever since I started working, I got paid on a Friday and my pay was gone by Monday, I've never been able to save a penny.

I buy stupid things just for the sake of it, it causes more arguments in this house than enough, I'll buy a mobile say this week, I loss interest in it and its sold on ebay the next and I buy something else.

Spending money makes me feel good I suppose, but once I get the item I'm bored again.

This has lead me to being in a hell of alot of debt and being put on an IVA

I know I have anxiety but didn't think depression

I have never heard of it being a sign of depression, but it is a symptom of other mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder. Since you already know that you have anxiety, you could possibly have a form of bipolar disorder where the manic episodes are paired with episodes of anxiety(instead of depression). Most people who are bipolar don't get diagnosed right away since they usually don't complain of the symptoms of mania, since they feel good at those times(too good). Therefor when they seek treatment it is usually for the symptoms of depression or anxiety.
A good psychiatrist knows how to screen for bipolar disorder, and can find the right combination of medications for treatment.

Worry is a complete cycle of inefficient thought revolving about a pivot of fear. By Author Unknown Find out about Depression Survival

How to Survive Depression in the Family

We lost everything!

We lost our home, our investments, our live savings, our friends, our relationships with our family members including our kids and our enjoyment of life. We almost lost our marriage and my wife almost lost her life all to her depression!

This article was written out of empathy for those who live with someone who suffers with depression or anxiety disorder; for those to whom I refer as "The Silent Victims"

For 6 years I was a silent victim and my life was completely unlivable as my wife, Sharon, suffered with extreme debilitating depression, anxiety disorder, a severe sleep disorder, destructive obsessive compulsive behaviors, rage and several other behavioral disorders.

I didn't know about any of her conditions until the day after we were married, then it was all to obvious that something was desperately wrong!

I could go on for hundreds of pages about what happened next, but the purpose of this article is to share with you just a couple of the lessons I learned through my 6 years of learning to live with sever depression and other mental and emotional illnesses in the family.

I should also mention that Sharon and I are still together and doing just great! In fact, our purpose now is to help others who suffer as we have.

It took me six years of learning lesson every minute of every day to make it through life with Sharon's depression. Through that time, I documented what I was going through.

While going through the daily stresses of Sharon's depression-driven behaviors, and in speaking with so many poeple who have also gone through it all, I have identified 4 unconscious stages of coping with a loved one's depression.

1. Denial: In this stage, I was either not willing or not able to accept that fact that my wife was mentally ill. My denial made life very difficult for both Sharon and I because I was not in a position to help her by continually pressuring her to "snap out of it"!

In order for us to move forward, it was critical that I accepted the reality that Sharon was ill…that took me to the next unconscious coping mechanism…

2. Secrecy: Once I accepted internally that Sharon was ill, I felt ashamed and uncomfortable with it. Again, this did not help either of us. I made sure that our private affairs were kept as private as I could and I was not able to willing to speak with anyone about it.

Holding all of this inside was like a poison to me and it soon began to affect my own health and my own emotional well being. At this point, Sharon's depression and related illnesses were starting to cost us dearly. Some of her behaviors involved compulsive spending which financially crippled us. This, along with other behaviors, pushed me into the next unconscious stage of coping…

3. Anger and Resentment: At this stage, I made my plight very public…and I began to consult my lawyer about a divorce. This was the most dangerous stage for us because this is the stage at which I was closets to leaving the marriage. It was also the stage which was hardest on Sharon, because she could clearly see my misery which drove her to blame herself and become suicidal on more than a few occasions.

If you think you are at this point in your own relationship with someone who suffers from depression, you truly do need to do whatever it takes to get to the next stage. The next stage is the one where you can finally start healing and moving forward in a positive direction…

4. Understanding and Forgiveness: This was the point where Sharon and I began to work together to find solutions. At this unconscious stage, I began to become more empathetic to Sharon's situation and she and I began down our path to healing together.

This is, in my judgment, where things can start to turn around. Until you reach this stage, I am convinced that there is no chance for the family to survive.

To survive depression in the family, I recommend that you start by identifying which stage you are currently at and do whatever you need to do to get to stage 4; Understanding and Forgiveness.

It may take some time; it took me several very unhappy years of living minute by minute to reach stage 4. Once there, you can then start taking the steps towards healing for both you and your depressed loved one.

Depression destroys lives…but it doesn't have to destroy yours!

Why Do We Have So Many Mental Disorders?

Why can't we just simply call a person messed up, rather we have to sympathize with that person, and understand where they are coming from and feel sorry for them. Then we have to find a diagnosis for their cutting their hair, body, or having anxiety or depression, or social disorder and not just call it survival of the fittest.

Look if you can't make it in school, or at home chances are you aren't going to make it in life. Sorry I am so tired of people saying they have Bi-Polar because they took one to many crack-pipes and now want to get government assistance.

That's a novelty.

No man ever sank under the burden of the day. It is when tomorrow's burden is added to the burden of today that the weight is more than a man can bear. By George MacDonald Find out about Depression Or Recession

Depression 2008: is This a Trade Cycle’s Recession?

INTRODUCTION
Many of the writers are of the opinion that the prevailing depression 2008 is the recessive phase of a trade cycle. I don’t know whether it is so or the depression 2008 is a different phenomenon. All the same, I would like to recall the period when the world economies were in search of ways and means to control the then prevailing inflationary pressure. If that problematic inflation was a consequence of some trade cycle running that time, the present depressive trend may well be a consequence of the successive downward phase (after boom) of the same trade cycle. Then, it needs not be taken as a new thing.
An economy is likely to encounter many disturbances whereby all methods of maintaining employment and national income as steadily rising involve certain difficulties and weaknesses depending upon the nature and size of the disturbances. The periodical rise and fall in the level of economic activities, employment and national income is the most frequent type of the disturbances and is known as trade cycle. This type of cyclical fluctuations has been experienced by all industrial countries since the nineteenth century. While governments may have the greatest difficulty in overcoming the effects of major structural changes in the economy, they should be able at least to mitigate cyclical fluctuations by means of suitable monetary and fiscal measures.

SAMUELSON’S THEORY OF TRADE CYCLE
Among various theories of trade cycle propounded by different economists the theories base on the principle of accelerator allied with the multiplier principle have paved the way for more accurate analysis of trade cycle. Economists like R. F. Harrod, A. H. Hansen, J. R. Hicks and P. A. Samuelson have made fairly successful attempts to establish that the interaction of the accelerator with the multiplier is capable, under certain circumstances, of generating continuous cyclical fluctuations.
Paul A. Samuelson studied the multiplier-accelerator interaction in greater detail and derived a model in which a series of equations expresses the way in which the two forces interact to affect income, consumption and investment over a time. According to him, the multiplier and the accelerator combine in a series of endless possibilities depending upon the values of the multiplier and the accelerator. In other words, the initial increase in autonomous investment (Ia) works through the multiplier (K) to cause an increase in income (Y), say dY = K x Ia {where, K=1/(1 - c) and c represents the marginal propensity to consume (MPC)], and this increase in income (dY) brings an increase in consumption (C), say dC = c x dY (where c which works through the accelerator (w) to cause a change in induced investment (In), say dIn = w x dC, which, in turn, further increases income by K x dIn and so the action and the reaction continue. The process is super cumulative because one initial increase (or decrease) will set off a snow-ball effect where income and investment interact to magnify the impact at each successive level. Samuelson used lagged functions for investment and consumption and derived income function which gave various patterns of change in income level, for different combinations of the values of the marginal propensity to consume (MPC) and the accelerator, for a given change in autonomous investment (government spending).

EXTENUATION OF CYCLICAL FLUCTUATIONS
The present study aims at finding out the condition related to the change in autonomous investment that extenuates the cyclical fluctuations by making plain the ebbs and flows of a trade cycle, explained by Samuelson’s model. The change in autonomous investment in accordance to the so derived condition will provide the steady rate of income growth.
The income function derived by Samuelson reads as –
Yt = Gt + cYt-1 + w (Ct – Ct-1)

Where, Yt = Aggregate income or output during a period t.
Gt = Autonomous investment incurred by government during the period t, c = Marginal propensity to consume (MPC), w = Capital output ratio or the accelerator and Ct = Aggregate consumption during the period t.
Yt-1 and Ct-1 denote the income and the consumption, respectively, in previous period.
Therefore, Yt+1 = Gt+1 + cYt + w(Ct+1 – Ct)

But, Ct = cYt-1 and Ct+1 = cYt

Therefore, Yt+1 = Gt+1 + cYt + cwYt – cwYt-1

Or, Yt+1 – Yt = Gt+1 + cYt + cwYt – cwYt-1 – Yt

Or, Yt+1 – Yt = Gt+1 + cw(Yt – Yt-1) – (1– c)Yt

Or, dYt+1= Gt+1 + cw dYt – (1– c)Yt
[Where, dYt+1 = Yt – Yt-1 and dYt = Yt – Yt-1]

Or, dYt+1 – dYt = Gt+1 + (cw – 1) dYt – (1– c)Yt

dYt+1 and dYt represent the rise in income in (t + 1)th and (t)th period, respectively. If the cyclical fluctuations in the level of income are extenuated, there will be established a steady rate of income growth.
Thus, dYt+1 = dYt

Or, dYt+1 – dYt = 0

Therefore, Gt+1 + (cw – 1) dYt – (1– c)Yt = 0

Or, Gt+1 = (1– c)Yt – (cw – 1) dYt

Or, Gt+1 = (1– c)Yt – (cw – 1)(Yt – Yt-1)

Or, Gt+1 = (2 – cw – c)Yt – (1 – cw)Yt-1

Or, Gt+1 = AYt – BYt-1 ---------------(1)

Where, A = 2 – cw – c

And, B = 1 – cw

Relation (1) represents the condition in which the cyclical fluctuations in the level of income, as explained by Samuelson’s model, are extenuated.
The values of c (= 0.6) and w (= 1.5), which are related to the numerical example used by Samuelson to show how the cyclical fluctuations in the level of income are generated, give the values of A and B equal to 0.5 and 0.1, respectively.

Therefore, Gt+1 = 0.5Yt – 0.1Yt-1 -------------(2)

If the initial rate of annual autonomous investment (G) is Rs 40 which is changed to Rs 50 in (t)th period and if the rate of autonomous investment (G) is planned as per the relation (2) for (t + 1)th and onward periods, the level of income will experience a steady growth as shown in the table given in the end hereof.

CONCLUSION
It is widely accepted that the interaction between multiplier and accelerator causes the generation of trade cycles and that the Samuelson’s model is the true explanation of the network. If it is so, the extenuation of cyclical fluctuations on account of trade cycles becomes possible, fully and easily, by regulating the autonomous investment according to the relation (1) explained hereinabove. In this way the myth of bringing out the economy from the depths of depression becomes converted into reality. This will enable the national income to grow without fluctuations on account of a trade cycle caused by the multiplier-accelerator interaction. Therefore, it may well be concluded that if the depression 2008 is the recessive phase of a trade cycle, it can easily be treated in the way suggested above.

Does somebody know how a country has massive inflation during a recession or depression? ?

We are currently facing a recession and surely the amount of money in circulation is in decline as people are spending less. How have some countries in the past had massive inflation along with a recession. Is this caused by the government printing massive amounts of money in an attempt to shore up the economy? Please only answer if you know what your talking about!

Sure. Consider the concept of a cost-push inflation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost-push_inflation

For example, suppose the price of oil goes up a great deal, for whatever reason. All of a sudden, without any change in the amount of money, everything becomes more expensive - at least to the extent that its cost depends on oil.

Then, because everything is more expensive, people have no choice but to buy fewer goods. So people produce fewer goods, which means that the "real economy" starts shrinking. So companies start laying people off, which reduced demand and feeds the circle.

If the increase in cost is real (because there are less anchovies in the sea, you have to dig deeper to get the material, etc. and not just a monetary or demand phenomenon, prices can stay high as the economy collapses.

This has happened, and more than once (including in the U.S. during the 1970's), so, of course, economists have a word for it: stagflation:

http://moneyterms.co.uk/stagflation/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagflation

http://economics.about.com/od/useconomichistory/a/stagflation.htm

And, of course, many think we are heading for more of the same:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/business/21stagflation.html

Now I think I know what I'm talking about, so I answered, but, of course, I could be wrong. The clueless rarely know that they are clueless.

Depression 2008: India May Have Scaring 2009

DEPRESSION TRICKLE IN US

It was 1977 when the Vietnam War ended and the GIs came home. They began taking out loans and spending some of their savings. At that time, in America, monetary inflation as a result of the war and the large amount of savings sloshing around in banks started creeping into the prices of tangible goods such as metals, food, and energy. Social Security benefits were rising at an annual pace of near 10%. The economy was affluent with liquidity.

In 1979, Paul Volcker stepped in as chairman of the Federal Reserve and realized that Americans should keep faith in the U.S. dollar to save the Federal Reserve, along with the fractional banking system of the United States, from collapse. He raised the rates to 20 % whereby the system became purged of excess liquidity, though as an unintended aftermath. This made mass bankruptcies to ensue. Short term lending dried and the economy ceased to function properly. However, complex investment derivatives and globalization postponed the inevitable situation. But, as an aftermath of globalization, big bulk of Dollar went to Chinese foreign exchange holdings because of massive trade deficit of America with China. This made a considerable dent on money supply in the economy. A huge amount of dollars went also into the reserves of oil exporting nations as well.  A further contraction in liquidity, resulting in a scare, came about on account of the collapse of the dot.com bubble. However, the dollars which were initially going into foreign reserves, but eventually returned to the U.S. economy in the form of purchased U.S. treasuries. All the same, the net inflow of dollars remained negative and the gap went on being widened. To keep the economy moving forward, the money supply and loan base needed to grow at a faster rate than the rate at which liquidity was being contracting.

The members of the Federal Reserve understood that for this economy to move forward, something needed to be done, and they took serious action. They immediately began printing money at large and started slashing interest rates so as to make home loans to become more appealing. In addition thereto, exotic lending instruments became created in order to provide more loans to the already strapped consumer. Hence, the beginning of sub prime mortgages came about. This helped the economy run a little bit longer but how much longer? The problem of current account deficit running in the red persisted whereby dollars went on continuously to flowing out of the country. By and by, the economy went on advancing towards the point where it becomes unable to sell any of its debt and the consumers become unable to take further loan. Large number of loans started going bad and the banks became short of capital to make further loans. Ultimately the melting point became reached, the faith in US Dollar and US banking system collapsed and a deeply threatening recessive trend settled in the US economy. The bailout strategy and likewise monetary measures could not check the money going wrong way. Nor the trade enhancement efforts could prove fruitful to mitigate, to the required extent, the increasing dollar reserve holdings by other countries like China through currency manipulations based on their cheaply produced exports. The recessive trend of US economy stepped beyond national boundaries through international transactions and trapped almost all European countries. Thus, almost the whole Europe and America came in the ambit of the scaring economic turmoil called ‘The Depression 2008’.

DEPRESSION TRICKLE IN INDIA

On the other hand, Indian economy (like other developing countries) was still suffering from persistent inflationary pressure on account of heavy autonomous investment aiming to achieve increasing growth rate. The inflation rate touched a blatting height of 12.91 % in the week ending on 2nd of Aug. 2008, despite that the income distribution was highly unequal, the middleman profit margins were unjustifiably high and banks were enjoying sufficient saving deposits. There was being observed sufficient demand in market despite the prices were increasing on account of increasing costs of production due to illogically heavy payments to CEOs, MDs and other likewise personnel along with superfluously enormous expenditures on advertisements. There has been prevailing mass unemployment but the wages and salaries were increasing. This shows that the Indian economy was running in a paradoxical condition. Thus, only a small spark was needed to start the reverse gear to make Indian economy advancing towards the point of meltdown. Being exposed to the risks of trading with the depression stricken countries and the cheaply produced export manipulating countries like China, on account of globalization, the Indian economy ultimately got the spark which was though unwanted but symptomatically due. The prevailing inflationary pressure started being mitigated. The front line concerns observing price decrease started crying for help instead of finding cost reducing ways and means to cut the unnecessarily and illogically raged costs. The government and the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) mistakenly came to their help in haste and that too following the way of bailouts as inspired from US. A short detail of the measures taken by the government and RBI is as under.

(1) SBI declared cut in various banking rates (REPO rate, SLR, Reverse REPO rate, CRR etc.) on N0v.02, 2008 to provide extra capital of Rs 850 billion in market. Including all previous measures RBI provided total extra capital worth Rs 2750 billion in the market up to this declaration.

(2) The government declared on Nov. 18, 2008, Rs 500 billion to be invested by the Central Government with public-private partnership in infrastructure projects.

(3) SBI declared on Dec. 06, 2008, a special loan facility of Rs 110 billion to help housing and small industries.

(4) The government declared on Dec. 06, 2008, a budgetary help worth Rs 150 billion to infrastructure projects.

(5) The government declared on Dec. 07, 2008, a bailout package worth Rs 3000 billion to rescue the economy from depression grip.

(6) The government declared another economic package on Jan. 02, 2009 to remove slackness in the economy due to the world depression. In addition thereto RBI declared further cut in various banking rates that would bring about an increase worth Rs 200 billion in the liquidity in banking sector.

All the measures mentioned above could not prove fruitful in keeping the economy beyond the ambit of depression grip. Hence, Indian economy also, like US economy, went on slowing down making the remedial measures to slink. The inflation rate came down from 12.91 % in the week ending on Aug. 02, 2008, to 5.24 % in the week ending on Jan. 03, 2009. Thus, the average downfall in the inflation rate came out to be of 0.37 % per week (approximately) during the period of five months. Moreover, the trend of per-week downfall was found to be increasing. It was 0.44 % in the week ending on Nov. 22, 2008 and came to 0.67 % in the week ending on Jan. 03, 2009. The average per-week downfall in inflation rate was 0f 0.20 % within the period from Aug, 02 to Oct. 18, 2008. It came out to 0.44 % in the week ending on Nov. 22, 2008 and to 0.67 % in the week ending on Jan. 03, 2009. During the above said period of 22 weeks (approximately five months) the per-week downfall of 1.10 % was the maximum which came about in the week ending on Dec. 06, 2008.

The vehicle manufacturing sector became badly affected. The sale of passenger cars came 6.98 % down to 82105 cars in Dec. 2008 as compared to 88272 cars in Dec. 2007. The decrease in the sale of passenger vehicles came out to be 13.85 % as the sale remained 99352 vehicles in Dec. 2008 in comparison to 115334 vehicles in Dec. 2007. The sale of trucks and buses came 58.28 % down as it was 42961 vehicles in Dec.2007 and came down to 17920 vehicles in Dec 2008. Three wheelers also observed 28.98 % decrease in the sale as the sale was 26823 in Dec.2007 which came down to 19048 vehicles in Dec.2008. The aftermath of this downfall in the sale of automobiles resulted into both the direct and the indirect cuts in the prices of all automobiles. For example, price cut from Rs 125000 to Rs 200000 on Volvo trucks and from Rs 16000 to Rs 37000 on Eicher trucks, The prices of Hero Honda products have been lowered from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000, the prices of different products of Bajaj Auto stand lowered  up to Rs 2100, Bajaj Auto also lowered the prices of its three wheeler products up to Rs 4400, General Motors India made a price cut on their different cars from Rs 8000 to Rs 16500 and Ford India lowered the price of its model ‘Fusion’ by Rs 18000, Fiesta from Rs 2100 to Rs 25000 and Endeavor from Rs 47000 to Rs 54000. Similarly, Maruti Suzuki started giving discount from Rs 15,000 to Rs 35,000 on its cars and Tata Motors gave relaxation on its cars from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. Moreover, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. decided to sell its popular model, SANTRO GL (Solid) model, at 10 years old price of Rs 299000 along with giving relaxation worth Rs 15,773 in the form of free insurance and accessories in non-AC segment, worth Rs 26,000 on SANTRO GLS model and from Rs 7,000 to Rs 25,000 on GATZ, Accent and Verna models.

Some of manufacturing companies are exercising wage cut indirectly through short term block closers, cut in working hours or cut in week days. For example, Tata Motors observed fourth block-closer for three days in its heavy vehicles plant at Jamshedpur from 28th to 31st December 2008, TELCON (Tata Construction Equipment Co. Ltd.), a company with 60 % partnership of Tata observed a second block-closer in its Jamshedpur plant, within a period of one month, for three days from 25th to 27th of December 2008, Telco Construction Equipment Co. Ltd. (TELCON) observed a four days block-closer from 4th to 7th Dec. 2008 and ZF Steering, a vehicle ancillary company declared a second block-closers from Jan. 21st to 27th, having already observed the first one from Dec. 21st to 27th, 2008. On the other hand, Ashok Leyland observed five days week for two months.

Some companies have started to resort even to retrenchment of employees to some extent despite restrictive directions from the government. Retrenchment of 15000 temporary employees in the ancillary industries of Tata Motors, job loss for more than half of a million employees of depression stricken textile industry and discharge of 60 % workforce of manufacturing facilities of Volvo India are some of the examples.

GOVERNMENT RELUCTANCE

Despite the frequent news coming from media for last two weeks, regarding different concerns placing demand for and pleading further bailouts, the government seems to pay no heed to this issue and show reluctance to exercise another bailout in near future. I think the government has now come to understand that bailout is a weapon of no use to make the current turmoil good since it neither improves income distribution nor it checks the money going wrong ways. Companies intend to preserve their profits by making good the deficit in profit, caused on account of demand based price cut, through bailout proceeds and not through cost cutting, in its stead. They speak of increased cost but want not to accept that the rapid cost increase has come about not on account of raw material price increase and wage rate increase but due to the illogically, unjustifiably and arbitrarily enormous payments to advertisement agencies, the directors, CEOs and likewise personnel, on one hand, and due to irrelevant, unfair and unjust profit margins of middlemen or traders (some times even up to 10 times of the whole sale price), on the other hand.

SCARING 2009

However, the reason of the government silence may also be the coming end of the term of Congress Party’s government. If it is so and the depressive effects are being suppressed without undertaking legitimate and compatible measures of depression encountering, there will be a blatting invasion of austere depression on Indian economy after the due elections are completed. If so happens, the later half of 2009 will become very difficult and rather scaring for us since the Indian economy would be thrown into a sore predicament. If the condition of rapidly falling inflation rate, banking rates, stock market index etc. persisted, the under developed Indian economy may have more difficult to get through 2009, in comparison to the well developed US economy.

The Political Economy of Social Justice

The Political Economy of Social Justice

Dr.R.Murali

Head, Department of Philosophy & Centre for Philosophical Research

The Madura College (Autonomous), Madurai -625011.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can

change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”- Margaret Mead

I

Social justice refers to conceptions of justice applied to an entire society. It is based on the idea of a just society, which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society. Hence, Ethics has many spheres to operate. Economics is one of the major spheres of ethics. According to Aristotle, Economics is a practical expression of ethics- a basic virtue rooted in justice. This concept of justice has been variously described as distributive justice or a fair share for all. In other words, the concept of social justice was accepted as being rooted in an ethical base or simply common sense and economics cannot be divorced from this. Similarly economics and politics are inseparable. Social justice is both a philosophical problem and an important issue in political economy.

It can be argued that everyone wishes to live in a just society, but different political ideologies have different conceptions of what a 'just society' actually is. The term "social justice" itself tends to be used by those ideologies who believe that present day society is highly unjust - and these are usually left wing ideologies, advocating a more extensive use of democracy and income redistribution, a more egalitarian society and either a mixed economy or a non-market-based economic model. The right wing has its own conception of social justice, but generally believes that it is best achieved through embracing meritocracy, the operation of a free market , and the promotion of philoanthropy and charity. Both right and left tend to agree on the importance of rule of law human rights, and some form of a welfare safety net (though the left supports this to a greater extent than the right).

Social justice is also a concept that some use to describe the movement towards a socially just world. In this context, social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality. So a very broad definition of social justice is that "social justice reflects the way in which human rights are manifested in the everyday lives of people at every level of society". It can be further defined as working towards the realization of a world where all members of a society, regardless of background, have basic human rights and an equal oppurtunity  to access the benefits of their society.

Many philosophers like Aquinas, Locke, Bentham , Mill, Kant and others have discussed the problem of social justice in their works. In the latter part of the twentieth century, the concept of Social Justice has largely been associated with the political philosopher John Rawls (1921-2002) who draws on the utilitarian insights of Bentham and Mill, the social contract ideas of Locke, and the categorical imperative ideas of Kant. His first statement of principle was made in A Theory of Justice (1971) where he proposed that, "Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override. For this reason justice denies that the loss of freedom for some is made right by a greater good shared by others", a deontological proposition that echoes Kant in framing the moral good of justice in absolutist terms. His views are definitively restated in Political Liberalism (1993), where society is seen, "as a fair system of co-operation over time, from one generation to the next." (at p.14).

Along with these philosophers some others hold that social justice is nothing but the redistribution of wealth, power and status for the individual, community and societal good. Some others hold that it is government's (or those who hold significant power) responsibility to ensure a basic quality of life for all its citizens.

Hence, it’s very clear that economic policies of the society are very much connected with social justice. It is also true that all around in the world today many advocates of social justice are in some state of despair. Some of them fear that social justice is a lost cause in a global economy.

II

Liberalism: Social Justice as Economic Freedom

Liberal capitalism, the super economic, all pervasive model which is promoted and practiced all over the globe today has been subject to severe critical examination by economists, not only due to economic recession but also mainly for destabilizing value systems in countries and becomes responsible for social injustice across the globe.

Friedrich Hayek, Nobel laureate in Economics and a principal twentieth century defender of liberal capitalism, once stated that “…nothing has done so much to destroy the juridical safeguards of individual freedom as the striving after this mirage of social justice.” We do not have to spend a great deal of time on his jaundiced reading of the history of struggles for social justice. What is, however, worth noting is his unequivocal presumption that social justice and the freedoms we have under modern capitalism are not only distinct from each other, but mutually antagonistic.

Sam Gindin in his article on ‘Anti-Capitalism and the Terrain of Social Justice’ severely criticizes Hayek’s position. He says that what so many others have obscured and what Hayek to his credit confronts directly, is that inequality is not an unfortunate aberration under capitalism, but an inescapable outcome and an essential condition of its successful economic functioning. Capitalism is—and this is surely as clear today as it ever was—a social system based on class and competition. Such a society guarantees not just inequality of result, but insofar as the results of inequality are passed on through the institution of the family and the spatial divisions of uneven capitalist development, the inequality is reproduced inter-generationally and inter-regionally. This leads to a decisive inequality of opportunity.

It is not surprising therefore that the most clear-minded defenders of capitalism consequently seek to displace the terrain of debate over the legitimacy of capitalism from distributive or equal-opportunity notions of social justice, to notions of individual freedom and especially market freedoms. Gindin observes that the individual is placed at the center of a world in which the concept of the community or the collective is confined to the state—liberalism’s old nemesis. Liberalism then seeks to limit the power of the state not only by the rule of law, freedom of expression and association, and elected legislatures, but also and especially by the rights of property, the inviolability of contract in market exchanges, and the protection of private-family spaces to enjoy the fruits of property and labor.

There is no denying the powerful practical appeal of this structure. Both civil and political rights and the historically unprecedented economic dynamism and possibility of rising standards of living rested on it. Yet the reality of class inequality behind this structure could not so easily be set aside. The contradictions of liberal justice rest on the fact that a market economy creates a market society, and that private property is not and never was a relationship between people and things, but a relationship between people. Historically, the creation of markets and private property were not, as liberal mythology tends to present it, a matter of getting the state to stand aside so natural human propensities could unfold. Private property in particular emerged with the support of an absolutist state controlled by landed interests who asserted unconditional rights over property which had previously been constrained by traditional obligations. Those interests, backed by the state, forcibly expropriated the commons—lands formerly accessible to the community—for their exclusively private use. The need to reproduce these kinds of private property rights and the privileges they imply necessitated a permanently strong, active, and class-biased state. Today, the drive to deepen and expand such rights takes the form of neo liberal globalization.

Capitalism’s inequalities, it is crucial to emphasize, are not simply about some getting more and others less, but rather that the economic freedom capitalism embodies involves guaranteeing different kinds of freedoms for different people. For a minority, economic freedom revolves around the power to organize production and accumulate; for the rest, freedom to sell one’s productive potential in a labor market and, on the basis of that, to exercise some personal choice in consumer markets. What the minority is accumulating as part of its freedom includes power over the labor of others and therefore over their “individuality.” The freedom/power to sell one’s productive potential and to exercise some choice in consumer markets, in contrast, is founded on a dependency on those who provide the jobs and the commodities available for consumption.

The neo liberal response set out to undo the historically-acquired social limits that had redefined liberalism in practice in the postwar era. Neo liberalism named a strategy that sought to place capitalism clearly back on the track of its still incomplete development by accelerating the drive to commodify, and therefore open every aspect of life to profits and the social discipline imposed by profits. This was not just a matter of the extension of markets spatially (“globalization”), but of deepening the domestic penetration of markets into any social, personal, or cultural space that had previously managed to escape subordination to a capitalistic calculus. Since democracy tends to recreate protections against the anti-social logic of markets, the implementation of neo liberalism also necessitated a decline, one way or the other, in effective democracy.

It is relevant to take note of certain important criticisms against neo liberalism by its own supporters. Joseph Stiglitz former economist in the World Bank and the Noble Prize winner in Economics in 2001, who is the staunch supporter of the Globalization himself, declares that “Globalization today is not working for many of the world’s poor. It is not working for much of the environment. It is not working for stability of the global economy”. He writes on the basis of this close observation: “what I saw radically changed my view of both globalization and development… I saw first hand the devastating effect that globalization can have on developing countries”. Stiglitz accuses that the West “acting through the IMF and the WTO – has seriously mismanaged the process of privatization, liberalization and stabilization, and that by following its advice Third World countries and former Communist states are actually worse off than before.

George Soros, another architect of Globalization observes that ‘we have global markets but we cannot build a global society without taking into account moral considerations’ He says that US is the major obstacle to international cooperation today. It is resolutely opposed to any international arrangement that would infringe on its sovereignty. The list is long including the International Criminal Court, the Landmines Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, many of the ILO conventions and many more arcane conventions like the Law of Sea Convention and convention of Biological Diversity. Hence he says that the pursuit of hegemony comes into direct conflict with the vision of a global open society. United States wants to be an unmoved mover.

So it is not simply eliminating poverty but rather reducing inequality. The first is impossible to resolve without solving the second. The real problem, again, is not absolute resources but the social distance and different degrees of control over one’s own resources. And this holds true in every society.

In this context, Habermas’s view adds a socio-cultural dimension to the political economy. Habermas does tie economic globalization and global terrorism, but does not believe that the latter is ultimately a manifestation of a clash of cultures. Instead Habermas regards global terrorism as an economically based reaction to the gross inequities perpetrated by globalization. Accordingly, Habermas regards global terrorism as arising from a breakdown of communication and as only amounting to an external threat to modernism.

This gives the liberal sociologist Richard Munch reason to fear that we will be faced with the depletion of non-renewable resources, cultural alienation on a mass scale, and social explosions unless we succeed in politically fencing-in markets which are, as it were, running away from enfeebled and overburdened nation-states.

As Habermas wrote in 1997, globalization 'threatens to dissolve the social glue that holds together already fragmented national societies.' In Germany, questions of nation, national identity and culture, along with the search for a binding ‘social glue', have arisen just as globalization challenges the possibility of the national unification process. Anti-globalization there, as elsewhere, seeks to protect local identity, economies and culture from both the European Union and the more powerful American 'empire'.

For Amartya Sen, the central issue of contention is not globalization itself, nor is it the use of the market as an institution, but the inequity in the overall balance of institutional arrangements--which produces very unequal sharing of the benefits of globalization. He says that the question is not just whether the poor, too, gain something from globalization, but whether they get a fair share and a fair opportunity. There is an urgent need for reforming institutional arrangements--in addition to national ones--in order to overcome both the errors of omission and those of commission that tend to give the poor across the world such limited opportunities. Globalization deserves a reasoned defense, but it also needs reform.

III

Globalization : Road to injustice

Globalization has not only affected all aspects of human life but also influenced the social institutions to a great extent. It operates in an uneven and unequal manner. The neo-liberal economy, i.e., liberalization, privatization and globalization, has further compounded the unevenness and inequality in society. The small minority of world's population holds maximum resources and majority of people are grappled in poverty.

Before the melt down, there were 1.3 billion desperately poor people in the world who survived on less than $1 per day. There were an additional 1.5 billion very poor who lived on $2 each day. This means that 2.8 billion, almost half of the global family were living on $2 a day or less (Sider, 2002). But today things would have gone even worse.

Many do not have access to safe water (1 bil.) and they do not have access to improved sanitation (2 bil.). These poor public health conditions cause approximately 34,000 children to die every day of diarrhea and other easily preventable diseases (Sider, 2002).

In answer to the question "What is globalization?" Susan George, president of the Observatory on Globalization in Paris, associate director of the Transnational Institute of Amsterdam, and author of nine books, stated that there is already a world government – which is not democratic; one set of people can change the future of others who are not involved in decision-making. Its objective is to put all human activity in the market, including education, culture, and health. Globalization is responsible for pushing wealth upward both between countries and within countries. Since 1980 every country has experienced increasing inequalities. 85% of people live in countries where inequalities are increasing and this includes China, Russia, E. Europe and West Europe and the US, and at the same time inequalities are increasing between North and South.

She gave the illustration of the upturned champagne glass, showing the top 20% of humanity capturing 82% of the wealth, while the bottom 80% of the graph must get along with 1.3% of the world’s wealth. These inequalities are becoming more extreme. There are now 485 billionaires in the world, who control the equivalent of the wealth of half the world. And only three of those billionaires control wealth equaling the national production of 48 countries.

These inequalities have drastic consequences. The recently series of financial crises was caused by the institutional investors of the world. The ‘electronic herd’ all act at the same time e.g. someone says Thailand is not doing very well or Mexico and all run for the door at the same time. Then the financial crisis occurs and the IF steps in to say what the country must do. She emphasized  “the rules that the IF sets KILL ordinary people”. For example in Mexico after the 1995 financial crisis 28,000 small firms failed because they could not keep up with the interest rates imposed upon them. Half of Mexico is now living below the poverty line. In Indonesia, after the financial crisis, 20 million people who thought they were becoming middle class were pushed violently into poverty. In Russia 4% of people used to be classed as really poor, but now because there are no rules as the ‘market’ is supposed to do everything 50% are living in poverty. Everywhere health, social and educational structures have been cut because of structural adjustments. Now there is only one ideology left in the world after the collapse of communism.

Who are the managers of the global system? The power behind the throne is the large multinational corporations. They do not want to govern directly so they do so through the WB, IMF and WTO. These corporations support even the UN. Kofi Annan has signed the Global Contract with 50 multinationals, many of whom have terrible human rights and environmental damage records.

The system works well for the top 10% of the world’s population, but not for anyone else. The central political question of our time is changing. It used to be one of hierarchy, where you are on the hierarchical ladder – a king or a beggar; that was the main organizing principle of politics. For the past 100 years or so the central political question has been – Who is going to get the biggest piece of the pie? Elements of both of these – hierarchy and share of the pie - remain today. But the new question is ‘Who has a right to survive?’ and ‘Who has not?’ Now there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who do not contribute to the market as producers or consumers. Do they have the right to survive?

The first thing people have to understand is that the present system is not the only choice. God never said to Moses that globalization must dominate the world. There are many possibilities.

IV

Melt down: Lessons

The sudden set back in the economic scenario of the world shook every one. It is mind boggling that till the other day, country after whether hailing from North America or Europe or Africa or Asia was celebrating its perpetual increased economic growth rate, enhanced access to information technology and rising amongst its population suddenly getting traumatized by the possibility of getting swept away under the current of regression and depression deeper than 1930s brought out in and by the financial melt down initially in the US and Europe. “The global financial system is in deep and unprecedented crisis. Central Banks and governments the world over are facing several complex and compelling challenges. There have been serious disruptions in money markets. Stock markets across the world have been in a free fall and there has been extreme risk aversion in all financial markets. Policy makers across the globe are responding with aggressive, radical and unconventional measures to restore confidence and impart stability to the system”. (The Hindu October 27,2008 Editorial).

One major impact of this financial crisis in Krugman’s assessment is that advanced countries are likely to hit near zero growth next year with the world economy expanding only 3 percent. He fears that this down turn will be deep and prolonged as it was during 1930s.

As the financial turmoil continues to batter economies across the globe, the bailout packages from different governments globally is nearing the US dollar 3 trillion mark- about three times the size of the Indian economy. The UK administration in the first week of October came up with a mammoth 500 billion pounds bailout package primarily to shore up the fortunes of the nation’s banking sector. Russia too has approved a host measures estimated to be worth US dollars 86 billion to salvage the country’s banks hit by the credit squeeze. European Union pumped in 1.7 trillion Euros for underwriting of banks. Besides, a handful of European countries have also, already announced packages worth a similar amount in efforts to have their troubled financial institutions. In fact most of the world central banks moved to flood the system with money lest there should no occur total collapse.

Describing the situation Krugman observed: “all signs point to an economic slump that will be nasty, brutish and long”.

Japan’s Prime Minister Tar also announced as 27 trillion Yen stimulus package on October 30 for the world’s second largest economy including credits and loans to help small businesses, a reduction in highway tolls and cash pay back to households. He said that the financial outlook is severe and that he global financial crisis is almost certain to affect Japan’s real economy.

The burdens and impact of this so called financial tsunami is not only cutting across the globe but more significantly it is cutting across every aspect of life and in particular of poor and depressed sections of society in all most every part of the world that includes even richer nations like US and Europe. According to Director General of International Labour Organisation(ILO),Juan Somavia in an article he wrote for Times of India (October 25,2008)” the impact of the crisis on the lives, working conditions and hopes of millions of people will be strong and systemic. Arresting the crisis would require reaching beyond the financial system. This is not simply a crisis on Wall Street; it is a crisis on all streets”.

While talking of burdens, let us note the findings of a recent estimate of the impact made by the ILO. In its estimate the world unemployment could increase by 20 million marks of global unemployed for the first time. People working in such sectors as construction, automotive, tourism, finance, services and real estate will be hit hardest first. What is more disturbing that according to this ILO estimate as quoted by Juan Somavia, the number of working poor living on less than a dollar a day could rise by some 40 million and those living on tow dollars could rise by more than 100 million. It may be of crucial importance to note that job cuts are happening not only in towns, industry or elite services alone rather shocks from Wall Street are traveling even to rural India and even to small scale cottage and handloom industries and other small occupations. According to reports (Times of India Oct 24, 2008) thousands of skilled workers in two small towns, 100000 in Moradabad( UP) and 25000 in Panipat (Haryana) have been laid off after orders from their global markets mostly from the US and Europe dried up this month. In Moradabad, artisan adept at centuries- old art of crafting brassware of European and American show rooms are pulling cycle rickshaws and selling fruits. Panipat, from where rugs, bed sheets and other textiles wind up in US stores like Wal-Mart has weavers migrating or working at jobs that now pay 1/18th what they did. According to K. Subrahmanyam in The times of India 0ctober 28, 2008 a large number of workers in toys factories in China have not only been thrown out of the jobs but have been denied payment of arrears because of economic slow down in the West. Again according to various estimates including byu the US government’s own agency the job cuts and increase in unemployment level has aroused great sense of insecurity amongst common Americans. Thus the voice is loud and clear that the crisis is not simply financial or one country centric, it is global as well as one that has the potential to devastate life and livelihood of even an average member of humankind in many parts of globe.

Today a global food crisis coexists with unprecedented financial collapse and a recession which may well turn into a depression. Utsa Patnaik says,” The domination of finance over industry and the pursuit of economic policies favouring finance capital, at the expense of growth of the real economy particularly the out put of basic necessities required by the masses. The domination of finance in the modern world and its ideology known as neo liberalism and has been evident since 1970s. We might as well call it neo- deflationism, for the ideology of finance capital always involves policies deflating the level of mass demand”.(People’s Democracy-03 November 2008)

· Whether it is development or the economic recession, common people of the world are being terribly affected by globalization.

· When Capitalisms in crisis, it immediately seek for Social Intervention by the state. eg. Bail out packages that are in vogue now in US, UK, Germany and other places. Whereas when it is on the monstrous growth based on social injustice, it insists the state to keep away from its control and interference. Crisis-control measures are taken to suit the seekers of the supernormal profits in this high capitalist set up.

From the foregoing it becomes clear that the process of globalization that was initiated by the US and its likes since the beginning of 1990 or may be little earlier is a misnomer. The process has failed to make globe as one. It remains divided between developed, rich , powerful and haves on one side and have-nots on the other with US and its allies representing the unipolarity and monopoly of economic power, trade, commerce and market. THE idea that process of globalization would ensure global prosperity, progress, peace and security leading to a global family or what we during our ancient period termed as ‘vasudeva kutumbakam’ is missing. The process of globalization has no doubt yielded into global oneness but only oneness of the kind and one kind only namely ‘a global economy’- a economy whose centre of gravity of fulcrum- its controlling mechanism and draining out its fruits resides only at one place. It is this kind of global economy with its global interconnectivity largely founded on fundamental capitalist ideas and absolute free market that resulted into financial meltdown in one place and that is place of monopoly over global market, namely the US which ultimately and due to its interconnectivity encircled almost every nation. This no doubt affected the richer nations but it brought with it tremendous potential to pierce even the livelihoods of poor nations and also of poor even in richer societies.

It is too late at this hour of the day to reverse the cycle of globalization. But equally the kind of globalization and free market philosophy practiced and professed could prove dangerous not only for the poor nations but also for the super power itself. The anger and civil unrest kind of situation prevailing in US resulting from meltdown is the testimony to it. The kind of globalization followed today that for some time brought deceptive prosperity is largely the outcome of culture of consumerism, egotism, excessivism, greed, lust and total loss of ethics and values – it is not simple failure of financial policy. Fighting these menaces of currently practiced globalization and turning it to serve the cause of humanity and human welfare is a complex and multi dimensional agenda. It requires substituting voice of monopoly, isolating and subjugating other with global consensus, global co-operation and global concerns for humanity. Of course, it would demand devising new kinds of regulatory framework monitoring mechanism, institutional structures ensuring that they represent collective wisdom and collective consensus, unlike the Bretton Woods Institutions* (IMF, WB, etc.)Of today which can be manipulated of arm twisted. We are reminded of what Dr.Manmohan sigh while addressing the ASEM said, “the sad truth is that in this age of globalization we have a global economy of sorts, but it is not supported by a global polity to provide effective government”. speaking in the same vein European Commission President Jose Barroso said,’ we are in a moment where we need global team work, we either stick together or sink together”. Thus in short, what we are pleading is a case for global co-operation for an International economic order inspired by global consensus that works on the principles of equity, fairness and distributive justice and serves the cause of bringing welfare, peace and security to every single member of the global community.

V

What to do?

The state, as an institution, supposes to guarantee social welfare and social justice to the marginalized groups. Globalization has not only threatened it but also made it weak. State has now retreated back from its welfare role. In the contemporary context, social justice agenda is taken over by non-state organizations that are critical. The older theories of social justice, which are either inadequate or inapplicable, today cannot cover the new developments that have taken place in the era of globalization and therefore they have to be reviewed. Whether or not you see globalization as a positive or negative trend, it has given rise to increased interdependence of world economic markets leading to increasing economic disparities between the rich and the poor of all nations. While the wealthy develop more wealth at an increasingly rapid pace, the desperate poor are barely surviving.

Evolving global consensus as to the nature of process of globalization desiring and effective regulatory mechanism, evolving an institutional structure which is transparent and democratic unlike the present Bretton Woods Institutions where the decision making remains opaque and controlled by few powerful nations and thus ensuring that market behave responsible to society is so simple. It is a complex affair requiring engagement not only of states alone of course which is most fundamental essential , but in addition it also demands engagement of political experiences, social and economic expectations of different societies; and evolving a sensitive and reflective opinion of public and citizenry at global as well as local level. In short evolving such consensus would demand building common understanding and a common approach to new International economy order amongst every stake holder. In fact it is this kind of engagement right from political leadership to professionals, universities and voluntary groups that ultimately resulted into institutionalization of EU which initially did not look like a reality. In fact it is through this kind of engagement that the consensuses on matters like: common currency, common passport, common market, common human rights adjudicating mechanism could be arrived at.

No doubt it would demand new base of knowledge; different kind of professional approach to dealing with issues political, social, legal and economic in nature, and evolving more vibrant and sensitive public opinion at global as well as local level.

Some proposals to safeguard social justice:

· Equal and fair commerce and not free trade

· Education, medical care, social welfare must not be in the market.

· We need to make transnational companies responsible for their actions all over the world.

· It is very much required to cancel 3rd World Debt, and reduce the power of the WB and IMF.

· Already there have been substantial victories defeating multilateral agreement on investments. The value of Monsanto’s agricultural division has been reduced to zero dollars, because people won’t accept genetically modified foods and products. National coalitions are growing.

· The economic and political spheres of society are to be subordinated human development.

· The consumption patterns and the life styles of the people must be changed towards the sane consumption. This cannot happen overnight or by decree, but will require a slow educational process, and in this the government must play an important role. The function of the state is to establish norms for healthy consumption as against pathological and indifferent consumption. There fore we need a humanistic science of Man as the basis for the applied science and Art of Social Reconstruction.

· The production shall be directed for the sake of sane production.

· A concerted effort to stimulate the appetite for sane consumption is likely to change the pattern of consumption.

· Production for use instead for profit must be slogan of the Government.

· Militant consumer movement that will use the threat of consumer strikes

as a weapon. 20% of consumers can do wonders. The great advantage of consumer strike is that they do not require government action. Realization of their power is essential. It could be a manifestation of genuine democracy.

· Bureaucratic control that would forcibly block consumption would only make people all the more consumption hungry.

· The value of other commodities and services can be determined by panel of psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, theologians, and representatives of various social and consumer groups.

· Industrial democracy implies that each member of a large industrial or other organization plays an active role and participates in decision making.

· The Government can greatly facilitate the educational process by subsidizing the production of desirable commodities and services, until these can be profitably produced. A large educational campaign in favour of same consumption would have to accompany these efforts.

· Passive spectator democracy must be changed into active participatory democracy. Political life requires maximum decentralization through out industry and politics.

· Active and responsible participation further requires that humanistic management replace bureaucratic management. The realization of the new society and new man is possible only if old motivations of profit and power are replaced by new ones. Being, sharing, understanding; if the marketing character is replaced by the productive, loving character; If cybernetic religion is replaced by anew radical humanistic spirit.

· All brain washing methods in industrial and political advertising must be prohibited.

· There is an urgent need for reforming institutional arrangements--in addition to national ones--in order to overcome both the errors of omission and those of commission that tend to give the poor across the world such limited opportunities.

VI

How to do?

Strong political movements that must be built upon the process of class struggle should take place in each country. As Hugo Chavez said, “it cannot be mere movement of protest and celebration like Woodstock.. It is an enormous struggle, an endeavor in which organization and coordination are keys”. This is the challenge to international intellects and activists.

· The Bretton Woods Institutions are the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They were set up at a meeting of 43 countries in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA in July 1944. Their aims were to help rebuild the shattered postwar economy and to promote international economic cooperation. The original Bretton Woods agreement also included plans for an International Trade Organisation (ITO) but these lay dormant until the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was created in the early 1990s.
