Book Review: Unholy Domain by Dan Ronco

There are a plethora of sci-fi books that have explored what the Earth would be like after the apocalypse, and generally the apocalypse in question is a nuclear war, or some sort of plague.

Unholy Domain takes this genre in a new and very thought provoking direction. One only has to spend a couple of minutes researching the history and growth of the Internet to realize how in the space of just a few years it was woven itself into the very fabric of our world. We have near instantaneous communication via email, we have access to enormous repositories of information, it has become a part of our day to day life. I could not live without it!

Unfortunately there is a potential dark side to the technology. Increasingly it is also the backbone used by basic infrastructures, power generation, transportation, law enforcement, and a lot more. There have already been rumblings in the press about what might happen if hackers gained control of a power generating plant, or other basic service.

In Unholy Domain Dan Ronco takes us to a world where a decade previously (2010) a virus had decimated the Internet. Because of the disruption to basic services over a million people died. What would the world look like under these circumstances?

Dan Ronco takes us to a world that has become a fractured society, the technos and the religious zealots. In the aftermath of the disaster the government has regulated technology, stifling innovation, this has resulted in an economic situation rivaling the great depression. Without advancing technology the world has not just stagnated it has regressed to an earlier time.

Technology has become an underground industry, a black market more lucrative than drugs. The technos are run by a shady organization known simply as The Domain.

The opposing force are the fanatical Army of God, the paramilitary wing of The Church of Natural Humans. Their leader Adam Jordan is on the outside a charismatic speaker, but is also a man with a single minded hatred for technology and those who would use it.

Our hero in Unholy Domain is David Brown, a young student who has the dubious honor of being the son of the man accused of unleashing the deadly virus.

When David receives a message sent 10 years previously from his father he begins to have doubts about his fathers guilt and decides to investigate for himself. David is walking a tightrope, he has enemies in high places, neither The Domain, nor the Army of God are enamored by his presence, for different reasons, though one does become his unseen temporary protector with an ulterior motive in mind.

This is a fast paced techno thriller which I can pretty much guarantee you will not want to put down, I know I didn't! Set close enough in the future (2020) that most of the 'props' are believable, it paints a dark picture of one potential future scenario for mankind.

This is a book that is worth searching out, I liked the style of writing a great deal. Each chapter begins with some quotes, some old and real, other from books yet to be written. A very cute touch. You don't have to be a hard core Sci-Fi fan for this one, just a lover of a great story.

You can pick up your own copy of Unholy Domain from Amazon, he also has a web site with additional information.

What to write a historical fiction short story on?

it's only supposed to be 1000 words, which is really short, so that's no problem - the main issue is i have no idea what to write about.

so far i've considered something like the boston tea party, or the watergate scandal, or something set in the great depression. but there needs to be some sort of conflict/resolution and i can't even think of a conflict.

any suggestions, guys? if you have a better time period i should write it in, by all means say so. thanks :)

How about Prohibitionn? The sale of alcohol was illegal and you can have conflict about selling it, making it or consuming it.

A woman could be struggling with her new right to vote. Her husband could be unsupportive or it could be a self-awareness/growth type of thing.

A family's journey out to the "wild west".

A young girl and how Roe v. Wade changed her life.

A religious refugee who fled to the colonies ( huguenots/quakers/many others)

An person who bought their way to the colonies as an indentured servant. Passage on a ship and they have serve 3-5 years as someone else's unpaid servant.

Loneliness insomnia and change: the fear of these is even worse than the reality. By Mignon McLaughlin The Second Neurotic's Notebook1966 Find out about Puppy Depression Dogs

How to Tame your Dog and training it to Perfection is Easier Than you Think!

Your Dog and Training is Easier Than You Think!

Your dog's behavior is a reflection of you

A dog is as good as its owner has taught it.

Family friends of mine have a German Shepherd and as they are an elderly couple they weren't quite so inclined to train their dog when it was young.

After a while of disobedience they decided to take this dog to a dog training school but as would be expected from a dog that has never had any training from a puppy the dog didn't like the training school.

The easy solution was to discontinue the training and hope for the best.

Unfortunately the best will never come from a dog that has not been trained and will not respond to any of their requests.

They were disappointed with their pet and assumed that it was because it had a poor personality.

Little did they know that having spent some time on this dog when it was a puppy would have given them a pet that they would have enjoyed a whole lot more and they would have had an obedient dog that they would have been happy to take anywhere without fear of it running away and causing trouble.

German Shepherds are intelligent dogs and this dog has been quite bored for most of it's life as it hasn't got any purpose in life and will not listen to any commands.

After seeing the dog become somewhat depressed I started to retrain it to improve the life of both the dog and it's owners.

Progress has been very rapid as the dog is happy it has some new challenges and loves the attention and rewards that it gets on a regular basis now.

It is a lot more sociable and is easier to manage when out in public.

The owners are a lot happier and so is the dog.

It just seems a shame that they didn't persevere so much earlier in the dog's life and they all would have enjoyed many more years of fun and entertainment.

depression on skull of my shih tzu puppy ?

We recently had a two-month old Shih Tzu puppy and just now I noticed that she has a small depression on the top of her skull. This is the first time we ever had a dog (we usually owned cats) and I'm dead worried if this is normal or if I have to take the puppy to the vet. I don't have the faintest clue on what is going on. I'm really worried.
EDIT:

To ASHA: Yes, it's on the center of her skull. I think she might've fell off the couch (which is ten inches from the floor).
To patriciajean43: We just got the puppy 3 days ago. And yes, the depression feels kinda soft.

Okay, I won't leave her alone on the couch anymore.

It is in the center and is it a soft spot?If so it sounds like an open fontanel.Did you just get the pup recently? When you take her in for her vaccines have the vet check it.If small it will most likely close up as she grows. And if you feel she fell off the couch you need to be more careful. At this young age she could hurt herself, never leave a small pup on a couch unattended.Added: From your later post it does indeed sound like the open fontanel as I said before.Do not press on it real hard.Leave it be.Remember her brain is under that spot..I didn't mean to sound bossy about the couch thing.Just I know you would not want the pup to get hurt if you could help it.

Depression Photos Quotes:

Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. By Eleanor Roosevelt Find out about Depression Photos

Photo Manipulation With Adobe Photoshop And Its effects On Society

For years now, the world has been impacted by the advent of the computer graphics editing tool Adobe PhotoShop. The effect that photo manipulation with PhotoShop has had on society and culture is undeniable and as the number of resources for PhotoShop learning and training increases, it is likely that this impact will increase as well.

Photo manipulation in photography is most evident in advertising and is used to enhance the look of people, places and objects. Open any magazine and it is likely that every single image within has been retouched or manipulated with PhotoShop. Consider an advertisement for a car; during the actual photo shoot, the photographer relies on a team of professionals to create the perfect scene. Lighting experts, manipulate shadows to accentuate the cars lines and enhance its curves. The entire scene is orchestrated to provide the ultimate perception of the vehicle. But, once the photo shoot is done, and the images are produced, the work is far from over. This is where the computer graphics professionals come in and their tool of choice is usually Adobe PhotoShop.

Even with their team of professional assistants, it is very difficult to create the perfect image in a single photo shoot. Certainly it can be done, but it takes time, and time to the advertiser equals money. What an entire team can accomplish during a photo shoot in 1-2 days of set-up and trial & error, a single graphic artist can accomplish in under an hour. This of course has not only decreased the costs associated with creating an advertising campaign, but it has also increased efficiency, allowing advertisers to produce more content.

From a business perspective, this has had an indirect result on the number of products available for purchase. Lower advertising costs create more opportunities to offer more products at a cheaper price. All of these inexpensive products have resulted in a change in purchasing mentality for your average consumer and have helped boost the economy during times which might otherwise be less economically vibrant.

Of course there are a myriad of other factors, but it can certainly be argued that Adobe PhotoShop has had an effect, if only indirectly on the economy of the World.

A more direct impact that photo manipulation with PhotoShop has had on society has been with the simplicity in altering the image of the human body. The vast majority of all advertisements featuring people have been altered in some way or another. Using PhotoShop, the ability to remove unsightly handlebars from the waist, or cellulite from the thighs is as simple as a slight rub with the eraser tool or a quick pass with the clone and stamp tool.

The result over time has been a total transformation of what society considers a good body image. While a few magazines buck the trend, most magazine ads portray women as unrealistically perfect. This depiction, when viewed by both men and women can have a drastic effect on how people view themselves when compared to what society evidently considers as the ideal look. Personal anxiety, low self-worth, eating disorders and depression are just some of the end results.

A powerful tool, there is no doubt photo manipulation with Adobe PhotoShop has had many effects on society, both from an economic perspective and from the perspective of how we view ourselves.

Depression Of 1930 Quotes:

I am an old man and have known a great many troubles but most of them never happened. By Mark Twain Find out about Depression Of 1930

A look at the Black Tuesday crash of the New York Stock Exchange and if it caused the Great Depression

The main characteristic of U.S. stock exchange was mass speculation throughout the late 1920's. In 1929 alone, a record volume of 1,124 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange, while in less than one year Dow Jones Industrial average rose from 191 to 381. This situation intrigued investors, who became uninterested in corporate results and focused on the potential profits from the constant increase in the stock prices. Moreover, investors were buying stocks on margin by borrowing from their brokers as they didn’t actually have the money to purchase them. This led to an absurd increase of market performance and incurred huge profits for the investors. In the 1930s, the total of outstanding brokers' loans was $8.5 billion, while interest rates for broker’s loans were skyrocketing reaching even 20%.

In this speculative environment, the stock prices had begun declining since September 3, 1929, but on October 21 a free fall of prices panicked mostly the average investors, who started selling quickly in the fear of even greater losses. Although the prices stabilized the next two, on October 24 the system collapsed collectively as institutional and major investors lost confidence in the market. Big banking corporations tried to stop the crash, but it was obvious that the market’s correction mechanisms could not work under these panicky conditions. On Tuesday, October 29, 1929 Dow Jones recorded a decline of 13% and 16.4 million shares changes hands.

Black Tuesday of October 29, 1929 is broadly considered as the beginning of the Great Depression Era for the United States, but also for the economic system around the globe. However, it is a fact that, since September 1929 the U.S. stock exchange had declined by nearly 40% in less than five weeks. It is also a fact that since the beginning of 1920s, capitalist systems had experienced periods of panic and depressions as a result of ineffective economic policies and practices, both governmental and private. In this turbulent environment, investors had lost their confidence to the market before 1929, but they kept on investing being captured by extreme profitability from margin investing.

Therefore, Black Tuesday did not exactly caused the Great Depression. It was actually a correction of the market considering the 13% losses of that day compared to the average of 40% of the previous weeks. However, as market mechanisms were unable to reverse the situation and force required correction of errors, stock exchange ultimately collapsed.

Depression Of 1930
Depression Of 1930 Best Information

great depression 1930's?

why does this economic time period of harship deserve the title "Great"?

it was great simply because the world had never seen anything like it before.
The Depression was collective insanity. Workers were idle because firms would not hire them to work their machines; firms would not hire workers to work machines because they saw no market for goods; and there was no market for goods because workers had no incomes to spend.
It was a vicious cycle.

Crossword Puzzles From the Depression Era Solving Tips

Solving Tips for Depression Era Crossword Puzzles

Rated from easy to challenging, solving one of the more challenging of crossword puzzles can leave you with a sense of accomplishment. Of course, you can find crossword puzzles in countless places: newspapers, magazines and in books devoted to them. Surely, the most innovative has been the internet. I finally have the perfect outlet for this very unique collection of puzzles.

The crossword puzzles of my father, sold in eBook format at: http://www.crosswordpuzzlesdepressionera.com/ are challenging in different ways compared to today’s crossword puzzles. These puzzles created between 1930 and 1934 reflect the consciousness of those times. Word usage and even definitions frequently change according to historical and current events. In my eBook crossword puzzles, some of the easy words become more difficult because they are related to the knowledge of the day in which they were created. Some clue examples include: (1.) Pen name of famous woman author. (2.) Word made famous by Lindbergh. (3.) American Humorist. (4.) Legendary Hero. (5.) Most recent occurrence. (6.) Minute Particle (7.) Proposed International Language.

The author of a set of crossword puzzles will often repeat certain words that are their favorites by giving them different clues. Sometimes the hints are straight out definitions of a word and other times a pun or joke is used with a play on words. You will always find some easy words from obvious clues that will help you get started and will interconnect with much harder words.

Remember that many words can have multiple meanings and can sometimes be used as either nouns or verbs. The first word of a crossword clue is always capitalized, and if that word is a noun, could be either common or proper. A common noun is a word other than a pronoun that is used to signify a person, place or thing. A proper noun has two distinctive features: one, is that it will name a specific item; another is that it will begin with a capital letter no matter where it occurs in a sentence. If the clue reads "Nice weather," the answer could be "sunny" or it could be "temps," the French word for weather, as the clue could be using the proper noun, Nice, a city in France. As a general rule, the harder clues can have multiple meanings in the words used.

Depression History Quotes:

There are very few monsters who warrant the fear we have of them. By Andre Gide Find out about Depression History

History of Scotts Valley, California

The history of Scotts Valley, California is a lengthy tale. It is positioned at the bottom of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Archaeological digs have unearthed remnants of the Paleo Indian culture dating back as far as eight to twelve thousand years. Settlements of the Ohlone tribes are thought to date back as far as 2,000 B.C. It was also home to the Shasta tribe and many beaver. Wild produce such as acorns, berries, cherries, and plums made the area attractive to indigenous people. Steelhead fish and salmon supplied many meals for people of the region.

The region was formerly called Rancho San Agustin during the time of the Spanish-Mexican inhabitants. The area extends for over 4,400 acres. It was given to Jose Antonio Bolcoff who was recorded to be residing with his wife there in 1836. Bolcoff was a native of Russia but later became a Mexican citizen. He spent a period of time as a traveling interpreter for Alta, California's governor, Pablo Vicente de Sol .Bolcoff abandoned his "rancho" and it was then given over to his brother in law Joseph Ladd Majors.

Majors was an American citizen from Tennessee. He had previously earned a living as a trapper. When he came to the area he assisted in the operation of a distillery with Job Dye. He constructed a grist mill where area residents were able to get much need ground wheat. He used the "rancho" to assist in stowing away British and American citizens. They were being threatened by the Mexican government who wanted to banish all of the "foreigners" in the area. Meanwhile, Paul Sweet helped to develop the tanning industry in the region. There was a large presence of tanbark oaks within the Santa Cruz Mountains. He was a native of the state of Rhode Island.

Mayor Joseph Ladd Majors was elected into office, and in later years served as treasurer to the city. He decided to sell his property in 1850. A native of Maine, Hiram Scott, purchased Major's property. Scott had worked as a seaman but became a gold prospector in the area. His family was the only residents in the area for a long period of time. The city was named in his honor. Quail, deer, coyotes, wolves, mink, and grizzly bears were plentiful and indigenous to the region during that time period. He eventually sold off his land to a few different families as they came into the area.

Locke's Springvale Dairy was an attraction in the area. The dairy donated some land to the school district. Social activities largely took place within the school which became the social hub. Apples, butter, cheese, grapes, poultry and milk became staples of the areas produce. The beautiful landscape of the region called to tourists from many places, especially after The Great Depression. History of Scotts Valley, California shows that the area did not become incorporated until 1964 and wasn't truly a city until 1966. The city is now home to many high tech firms.

Is it possible to be accepted into the military if you have a history of depression and once took meds for it?

Please only anwer this question if you are serious and know what you are talking about. NO COMMENTS PLEASE.

A history of depressive disorders treated with anti-depressants is not automatically disqualifying. It will require a waiver from either the Commander of the Recriuting District or a medical waiver in accordance with the brach of service's manual of the medical department.
There are certain things you can do to make the process easier. Try to get copies of all documents related to your mental health treatment. Be honest and open with your history to your Recruiter and to the people at MEPS (military entrance processing station).
Lying will eventually catch up with you. If you have a recurrence of symptoms while on active duty and reveal your previous history at that point you can be charged with a fraudulent enlisment or erroneous enlistment and be fined or placed in confinement.
Take it from someone with 15 years in the Navy who specialized and works in Mental health.

Depression Photos Color Quotes:

No human thing is of serious importance. By Plato Find out about Depression Photos Color

MENOPAUSE – SIMPLE WAYS TO COPE WITH THE symptoms

Menopause has a debilitating effect on the body and mind of a woman. This may sound melodramatic, but when you think of all the symptoms that are part of the menopausal stage, you will definitely agree with me.

Medical research has identified 34 to 35 common menopausal symptoms. To name a few:

Physical menopausal symptoms:

Profuse sweating at night, palpitation, extreme fatigue, joint pains, bleeding of gums, bloating, frequent headaches, irregular menstruation, Osteoporosis, cracking and chipping of finger/toe nails, increase in facial hair but thinning of hairline, frequent gastric ailments, vaginal irritation, dryness of skin causing wrinkles, and sometimes higher levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormones (TSH) or Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Emotional menopausal symptoms: Irritability, mood-swings ranging between depression and hilarity, insomnia, lack of concentration, unjustified anxiety and fears, diminishing interest in sexual activity, etc.

Phew! Aren’t these enough? Today, medical research has provided drugs for most of the physical as well as emotional problems. But some of these medications have side effects that can be equally traumatic. So, from a non-medical point of view, there are some very simple ways in which to cope with this difficult stage in life. They are:

Yoga therapy for menopause

Prana Power Yoga is one of the most effective forms of exercise. It is a combination of Yoga exercises and meditation. Yoga improves blood circulation and increases efficiency of all the other organs, thus reducing the physical symptoms. Yoga also includes pranayam or breathing technique which is a form of mind-and-body relaxation method, thus reducing emotional symptoms. Of course, any new form of physical activity should be undertaken under proper supervision; especially so by women who have a family history of Osteoporosis/Rheumatism or experience joint pains. If your daily schedule renders yoga classes impossible, an early morning walk for about 20 minutes will do wonders as well. It is important to make exercise an essential part of your daily routine.

Appropriate regime during menopause

I am not going to tell you the usual diet – drink plenty of water, increase fiber intake, lots of fruits and vegetables, etc. You already know this. But here’s what I consume besides the usual balanced diet with positiveresults – soy bean flour. A tablespoon of flour per day can be consumed in the form of porridge at breakfast time. Also, add a tablespoon of cooked bean sprouts in your daily salad. Make mayonnaise and other sauces at home with low-cholesterol cooking oil instead of using commercially available sauces. Soak together one almond, fiveblack currants, one dried fig, one dried apricot, one date in half cup water for five to six hours and consume the whole thing once a day. This prevents acidity and aids digestion. And here’s the bonus – your skin will develop a new radiance. Again, please be cautious about any known or possible allergies. Modifying an old cliché, “An apple a day, keeps your cheeks pink everyday.”

Hobby as a cure for menopausal symptoms

Come on ladies, start thinking about “you” instead of your career and family. Keep some time of the week for an activity that you like doing alone. Occasionally go on a holiday to a place you have missed because the rest of the family was not interested. This can be combined with photography or writing travel articles to share your experiences. If Osteoporosis or Rheumatism is a deterrent, resume an old favorite hobby such as writing, singing, painting, sketching, home-made jewelry, home-made handicrafts, etc. You can learn to play a musical instrument or join the local dramatics association. But the key phrase here is – do what you-and-you-alone wish to do, away from the rest of the family. It will also get you away from your aches and pains for a while.

A school friend of mine took up an unusual hobby – she brought down all the old photo albums from the attic and kept them closer at hand. Once a week she organizes the photos in new albums and writes little notes below each photo, listing the people in each photo and the relationship with the family. She also writes down some interesting or amusing incidents related with some of the photographs. This has brought back wonderful memories and she feels as if she was reliving those beautiful moments of her life. It has had a therapeutic effect and keeps her in a positive frame of mind during the rest of the week. Ahem, of course, some of us like writing articles.

Look good, feel good during menopause

Ah, know any woman who doesn’t want to look good? You will not find one. Treat yourself to some new clothes; maybe even change your style a little. Give yourself a new look. It’s not important to be trendy. It is more important to wear comfortable clothes that enhance your individual personality. Try a new hairstyle. A deep-cleansing facial once a month will keep the skin toned and slow down the process of wrinkling. The look-good-feel-good effect works wonders, so pamper yourself. Herbal products are great and rarely have adverse side effects. Massaging with almond oil enriched with Vitamin E rejuvenates the skin and gives it a natural glow; yes, even at 50 plus years. Again, please do not try anything new if you have a history or family history of skin allergies.

Redecorate your home

As a cure for menopausal symptoms, depending on your finances, health and energy levels, you can redecorate your home (or at least your own room) to give it a new look. Take your time doing it. Make a list of your favorite colors for the soft furnishing; buy a reclining chair you’ve always wanted or a lampshade you preferred. Maybe you would like a small settee placed next to the window for your early morning tea time. If your room is breezy and cool, hang a wind-chime at the window. Choose something with a soft tinkling sound. This will soothe the nerves and in a little while you will actually feel your mind and muscles start to relax. The soft sound of a waterfall can also be very calming. Small ornamental indoor waterfalls are available in curio shops. Place it just a few feet away from the chair you usually use when relaxing at the end of the day.

Aromatherapy for menopause

Go out and shop instead of wallowing in depression. Lavender, ylang-ylang, chamomile, orange, rose, etc are soothing fragrances. Essential oils with these fragrances are commercially available. Rubbing your face and body with an essential oil of your choice will serve a dual purpose - the fragrance soothes the nerves and the base oil acts as a natural moisturizer. These oils are also available to suit a person by their personality and zodiac sign. Why not try one? I have and it does help to some extent.

Home based job - a sure cure for menopausal symptoms

For homemakers, who have some free time on their hands and are thrifty by nature, taking on a part time work-from-home job can be very fulfilling. You can even acquire the job from home. There are various websites where you can register free of cost and seek employment to suit your talents. Just Google-search for home based jobs and you will find a plethora of such websites. Some extra income is always useful. A bit of caution: If any site asks you to pay them online to get a job, just ignore them. No genuine job sites will ask you to pay them for giving you work as they are paid by the recruiters. For job-seekers, the service is free of cost.

Charity-related work

Now this may sound preachy, but in fact charitable work has a therapeutic as well as schooling effect on a person. This should be a purely voluntary service, not paid work. Visit an orphanage or home-for-the-aged and spend some quality time with the residents. Voluntary work in schools for special children can also be taken up. This kind of activity would take you away from your aches and pains. Emotionally, when you see someone in a worse condition than you and yours, it compels you to thank God for what He has given you. Charity work can also be done from your own home. There is a concept of mentoring a needy child, where you can facilitate the child’s education. There is no financial responsibility on your part. Coaching, guidance and advice are all it takes. This is very fulfilling emotionally, especially since your own children have probably grown up and do not need you as much. The feeling of being “needed” by someone adds purpose to your life.

Reading - a distraction from menopause

Were you fond of reading when young? Have you let that excellent habit take a backseat? Then this is the time to visit the nearest bookstore and just browse, and browse... The old spark of interest will be rekindled. I’m speaking of books, of course! Discover new authors, new writing style. If you have read only fiction in the past, try non-fiction like plays, autobiographies, real-life adventure stories, etc. At present I am reading “Three Cups of Tea” co-authored by Greg Mortensen (a mountaineer) and D. A. Relin, which is about one man’s mission to build schools in the most remote parts of Pakistan where there were none. It is a very compelling story and fast reading.

Another lady of my acquaintance did something unusual but very, very therapeutic for her – she gathered together all the comics that were stashed away in an old trunk and read some of them once a week. These included Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Asterix, Archie, etc. What you read is not the question here. The end result has to be positive and that’s what counts. If you do not wish to purchase books, you can join the local lending library and read books for a nominal fee.

Pet therapy for menopausal symptoms

Those who love animals but have not had an opportunity to keep a pet can do so now. Pets are adorable. I have a dog named Robin Hood, who belies the name vis-à-vis bravery. Yet, he is the most pampered and adored member of our household. Dogs, cats, fish, birds or other pets need a lot of attention, so you should be prepared to devote plenty of time. Most pets havemoods too and are usually very sensitive to criticism. Treat a pet with TLC and the pleasure is all yours.

Quality time with spouse:

Discussing your needs and problems with your spouse can sometimes help. Better options are getting away together at a weekend for a short holiday, reliving the old days, sharing common interests, etc. Enroll in some activity which you can do together as a couple. Learn ballroom dancing together. Laughing together, smiling together, sharing companionable silences, just a walk hand-in-hand is not outdated and will never be. These apparently small gestures are a large part of togetherness.

Recognize your potential:

Paula (name changed) said to me, “But I am not good at anything. I cannot sing or dance. I am not fond of reading. My Arthritis will not permit travel. I am just an ordinary homemaker. I can cook and bake very well but I’ve been doing that for years. It hasn’t been therapeutic so far!” Our little group of friends got together and suggested she conduct cooking and baking classes at home for teenagers and young couples who are on the threshold of a new life. Today, her students are winning cooking and baking competitions. They consider her the mantra for kitchen-ills. For neighbors and friends, she has even come up with simplified recipes; especially useful for mothers with very young children or men/women who like home cooked food but cannot spare the time to prepare elaborate meals. Who knows, maybe one day a cookery book with her name on it might be available in bookstores.

So ladies, you have taken care of spouse, house and kids. Why expect others to take care of you now? You can take care of yourself. I have found my therapy – reading and writing. GO AND FIND YOUR THERAPY BECAUSE YOU ARE WORTH IT

Great Depression Usa Quotes:

If we all did the things we are capable of doing we would literally astound ourselves. By Thomas Alva Edison Find out about Great Depression Usa

The History of Gold Coins Issued by Usa

The first gold coins in the United States were issued back in 1795. The Unites States Mint set the value of the U.S. Dollar at 24 grains of gold. The value was based in accordance with the world price on the precious metal, which at that time was $19.39 per troy ounce.

The U.S. gold coins started to be issued in seven different mints around the country as the Western Frontier of the Unites States began its expansion. The mints were set from Philadelphia to San Francisco. The sizes of coins varied from one dollar gold piece to fifty dollar denomination. It is worth mentioning that at that time the U.S. mints issued coins that were worth their weight in gold.

In 1834 and 1837 U.S. Congress modified the gold specifications by setting the price of gold at a mark of $20.67 per ounce. When the Great Depression occurred in 1933, President Roosevelt made gold an illegal asset for the citizens of the United States. During this period, by Roosevelt's order, all gold coins were returned to U.S. Treasury and the melted into gold bars. After that the value of the U.S. dollar coin was set to $35 per ounce. The global outcome was to decrease by 40 percent the buying power of the dollar

When millions of gold coins were melted into gold bars, they became very rare and thus highly sought by various collectors. According to money experts only about one percent of gold coins can be found today. Each gold coin that survived till nowadays is highly valued by collectors and investors.

Every gold coins minted in the United States before 1933, is valued on individual basis according to its date, rarity, appeal among various collectors and its grade.

What is Rare Coin Grading Worth?

Coins that fall under the category "rare" are graded on ANA (American Numismatic Association). The scale ranges from 1 to 70. Coins are certified authentic and then PCGS or NGC, two leaders in providing coin grading services. For example a gold coin graded 1 has a slightly visible date, very wear and its value is a little above its weight in gold or precious metals. Obviously the better the coin is preserved the more a collector or investorinvestor in willing to pay for it.

Double Eagles

1933_double_eagle_gold_coin_reversevery often a collector starts his Gold Coin Collection of U.S. coins minted before 1933 with a $20 Double Eagle. Note that from 1849 to 1907 U.S. Mist issued the Liberty series. The Mint then changed the design of the Double Eagle into Saint-Gaudens. The latter were minted in the period between 1907 and 1933.

Starting a collection of Pre- 1933 U.S. gold coins is advantageous for several reasons:

"Pure Gold Content" - this means that each coin includes almost 1 troy ounce of gold.

"A Double Profit Opportunity" The gold market is continuously changing and $20 Double Eagle gold coins already have a history showing the continuously rising value, which goes 2 to 3 times higher in value if compared to the gold bullion alone.

The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin

One of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, coin is considered to be the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle. It actually was never officially issued. Still it appeared from 1907 until 1932. Although in 1933 there were 445,500 Double Eagle minted, none were released into circulation because of the changes made in currency laws during the Great Depression.

The result of the Great Depression was that president Franklin Roosevelt took America off the gold standard. The gold coins were drawn out of circulation and afterwards were not issued anymore. Besides, people had to return the ones they had

Later, in 1933, the Double Eagle coins were declared illegal. It was prohibited to own any of the gold coins, unless they had a collectible value.

The same year Gold Double Eagle coinsGold Double Eagle coins were ordered to be melted by the U.S. Mint. By 1937 billions of gold bars were made out of these unique coins.

A few coins have escaped from being melted down. In1933 two of them were given by the Mint to the U.S. National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institute. These two Gold Double Eagle coins were known as the only legal specimens to ever become part of a coin collection. Still by 1952, eight additional coins were discovered. These were confiscated by the Secret Service.

Today 19 of the some of most valuable 1933 Gold Double Eagle coins are owned by a Philadelphian jeweler, Israel Switt.

Great Depression: How did it affect the USA?

I am looking for solid based answers that include important points in the 1930's that shaped the USA in good or bad ways. Thanks :D

The Great Depression was the worst collapse in the history of American capitalism. The American people endured a full decade of almost unbelievable economic misery. Depression In Women
Depression In Women Unique Explanation

How can depression in pregnant women lead to preeclampsia?

The march of dimes suggested that pregnant women with depression have a higher risk of preeclampsia is this true? And if so.. why isn't this mentioned anywhere else? and how are the two related?

source that says depression causes

http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/188_15663.asp

If depression is due to stress or results in stress, stress causes alot of medical problems (high blood pressure, etc) and I'm guessing that is what their studies have shown. You may want to research the effects of Stress on pregnancy and see if you find articles associating Stress to Pre-Ecamplsia/Toxemia in pregnancy.

There are foods that will help reduce stress that are nutritious as well. Blueberries, Almonds, Dark Greens are among several stress reducing foods. Try adding some to your meals and you just may see and feel the difference (worked for me). Also doing a power walk each day, will help raise your endorphins and lowers stress.
