Worrying is like a rocking chair it gives you something to do but it gets you nowhere. By Glenn Turner Find out about Depression Types
Types of Mood Disorders
There are two categories of mood disorders recognized by the psychiatric community: unipolar and bipolar disorder. Both are a type of depression with the difference being those who suffer bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, also experience extreme mood swings between depression and episodes of extreme mania or high energy. The unipolar, or depression, type of mood disorder can further be broken down into the different types of depression which include: 1. Major depression. 2. Dysthymia. 3. Seasonal affective disorder. 4. Postpartum depression. Mood disorders are characterized by continued feelings of sadness, despair, guilt, irritability, loss of appetite, constant fatigue and suicidal thoughts. Different people will have different combinations of these thoughts and feelings, making it important for sufferers to seek professional help to help sort through the various symptoms. While some of these feelings are normal in daily life, when they become an on going problem that last for weeks, months and even years it is considered a mood disorder that needs some sort of medical or psychiatric treatment. The exact cause of mood disorders is not known. It does appear that many combinations of outside events can trigger an episode. It is known that many people who suffer mood disorders also have a chemical imbalance of the brain that makes them more susceptible to these depressed feelings. Research has also shown that the different types of mood disorders can run in families are thought to be a genetic trait. Treatment of mood disorders varies depending on the disorder itself and any outside influences that may contribute to the disorder. These outside influences include illness, drug or alcohol abuse or a major life changing event. Normally these need to be dealt with along with the mood disorder for treatment to be successful. The mood disorder itself can be treated with anti-depressant medication, therapy or a combination of the two. The different types of mood disorder can be treated successfully if its sufferers seek help. Unfortunately nearly half of the people who suffer from mood disorders never seek the help they need. What was Hoovers approach to the Great Depression? What type of things did he do?
I can't seem to find this answer and its killing me! Any help would be welcome.
Hoover signed into law the federal reserve act which basically made all people slaves to the system. This is huge and massive in its scope and hard to comprehend. See when the US gave up the power to coin and regulate the money supply to private banksters (word used to display connection to other words like mobsters, gangsters, hucksters, lawyers), when this was done, the value of the dollar began to plummet and to this day has a value of pennies compared to when the Fed took control. btw the main task outlined by Congress for the Fed was to maintain the value of the money, which they obviously failed. But they did so in ways to be not obvious. With the system as is you and I with every other person alive who is not a wealthy rich person will continually work our entire lives to do what? Pay off debt. To who? The banks and the gov't. This is NOT what the founding fathers outlined in the Constitution. It is in fact the exact opposite of what is outlined in the Constitution. Our country has been hijacked by the politicians once entrusted to serve the people and protect their best interest. Now the whole system only gives any interest to the biggest campaign contribution or favor. Both of which are bribes and illegal in all areas of life except when it concerns politicians. Hmm wonder why? Hoover died very morose and sorrowful for the huge injustice he placed upon the people once sovereign in this country. He is rotting in his own hell for that along with whoever else back then helped get this garbage legislation passed. Right there with income taxes and all these other regulatory fees, fines , surcharges, levies, excises, postage fees, assessments, penalties, and the list is about fifty miles long of all the other names for tax they use. Hoover approach was to spend as much as he could and then give the country to the banksters and enslave everyone until the next time the people wake from the trance they are in and take back our country. Wake up and surf around for learning about this stuff. You will find many times the link you try will come back as not available. This is because the gov't has tons of anti propaganda agencies working on finding the truth and wiping it out as fast as they can. See a uninformed public is to their liking. They need it in order to keep collecting all that tax money to give themselves annual raises and lifetime annuities and retirement benefits and health benefits no one in the private sector that pays all those taxes will ever get. Ever wonder why the things we are taught in school growing up seem to be of no use whatsoever in the real world we live in day to day? Because if they taught us what we should know like how the banking system and monetary system works, the American people would revolt and kill every single one of those thieves, con-men or what ever you prefer to call them. They are lawbreakers that have bought off the legislators and have secured their innocence through bribery, and special favors. Same with all those serving( serving their puppet masters at the insurance corps., banks, and other huge lobbying groups). When you hear the term "wealth distribution", this is some of what is being talked about. The new health care legislation is what that is. Tax tax tax tax tax tax and give it to people who either don't need it, earn it, deserve it, obtain it under false pretenses, or the main eater of the tax collected, the politicians as it is collected and sent through their grubby paws it always finds its way into their pockets first, then some filters through to the intended purpose. Not much though. Hoover destroyed this nation single handedly and did it by giving it to the bankers. Something Andrew Jackson spent his entire presidency keeping from happening, and avoiding several assassination attempts by those banking powers that wanted the central bank. Andrew is the guy on the $20 bill. Hoover is not on anything. And he's the one who gave away our money and our self soverveign status doing so. Go find out what that is and get real mad. Without our sovereign status we are nothing more than vessels in which a tax can be collected from on a constant and ever increasing amount. Otherwise known as slaves. See these socialists like Pelosi and Reid and Ted Kennedy(don't ever mistake Ted Kennedy for John F. Kennedy) all want one thing, to keep us all in servitude to them. JFK was a great president and his vision of ending the federal reserve and their stranglehold on the people through lending practices and controling interest rates amongst the other countries banking moguls and with holding credit or advancing it got him asssassinated. If Oswald killed Kennedy, it was because the bankers paid him to do it. There is a speech on youtube if you search for it that Kennedy makes about ending the fed, and getting the media to expose corruption within the gov't and everywhere it is found. Kennedy brought silver certificates back into circulation as part of his plan to base our currency upon something of value again. These are the things that the bankers do not like at all, and will kill those who try to take away their power. Ron Paul will be next probably. He is getting way too much headway with his audit the fed and end the fed push. In conclusion, Hoover sucked and is not worthy of anything but derogatory remarks.

Psych. experts: Facing a terminal illness and severe anxiety and depression?
Is this just a general given that people will face or does life style or regret matter?
Do those who LACK faith in God face more anxiety and depression when faced with a terminal diagnosis or do those who have faith still have this anxiety and depression during this time?
Do those who are carefree (will party up their last days...giving no thought to afterlife) face less than those who used to be partiers and now realize that partying offers no comfort and now they have nothing to hold onto?
What type of person when faced in this situation becomes overwhelmed with long-term anxiety and depression?
OR......are there so many factors that come into play?
My 2nd cousin is experiencing this. I don' tknow her well.
Life style is a huge factor into how people view terminal illnesses and also how they deal with depression and anxiety. Anxiety is heavily influenced by lifestyle and high stress lifestyles are obviously more prone to producing high anxiety people.
Having a solid religious faith does give many people comfort if they realize that they have a terminal illness but so does having strong family ties and good social interconnections. Regretting partying is not something that specifically influences ones view of their oncoming death, but having lived a shallow life in which a person wishes they could "do it over again" is something that will make the prospect of dying seem much more difficult than it should be.
Being carefree can actually be a good thing because if it allows you to get closure in the face of a terminal illness it can be a good thing. Holding onto one's life too tightly (too many things to live for) can make dying seem absolutely tragic so this question can go both ways depending on the circumstance.
A person with a terminal illness is far more likely to become depressed than to develop anxiety issues. In fact, in terminal patients anxiety is a sign that some personality issue existed during their life whereas depression is far more common. There are many factors that come into play here including social support, genetic predisposition, view on life and methods of dealing with stress.
Daniel G. Amen, M.D., has pioneered the clinical use of brain SPECT imaging (one of medicine's most sophisticated functional brain-imaging studies) in psychiatry. The Amen Clinics' signature brain scans have discovered that the illnesses of anxiety and depression are, in large part, the result of brain dysfunction...

How To Cure Social Anxiety Effectively
Social anxiety manifests as feeling anxiety in common social situations. If you are a social anxiety sufferer then you know that all areas of your life are being affected by the influence of social anxiety.
Your dating life suffers, it becomes harder to make friends and your life becomes like a prison. You are a prisoner of your thoughts. It feels like you are living in an invisible cell that you can not smell or touch.
Here are a few tips to start right away your recovery from the influence of social anxiety:
1. Stop judging everything. Learn how to look at reality with your own fresh eyes. Don't over dramatize events and imagine what can be in the world. Look first at what it is.
In other words, you should not suppose anything that you can not prove.
Don't suppose anything about people before you know that it's true.
2. Heal your past. Our past can be a great source of suffering if we don't accept it as it was. You need to accept completely what happened in your past. You can not change it.
You can not change it in reality but you can change it in your own mind. Your mind does not hold truth. Your mind just approximates the outer reality. Most of the times, it does a pretty bad job at it.
3. Accept reality as it is. This seems to be the hardest thing for most people. I don't mean that you have to accept reality only intellectually or conceptually. You need to accept it at a gut level. You need to get as much as possible in touch with reality as it is.

No man ever sank under the burden of the day. It is when tomorrow's burden is added to the burden of today that the weight is more than a man can bear. By George MacDonald Find out about Anxiety In Toddlers
Children Can Have Anxiety Just Like Adults
Child Anxiety, just like that of adults, is a normal, healthy emotion felt as a response to certain stimuli. But when anxiety becomes recurring, irrational and intense, it might be thought of as a disorder. Episodes of anxiety attacks can disable the child from performing his day by day duties in class and at home. And while it is typically safe, anxiety attacks can affect how the child lives.
Since youngsters are more fragile, they are vulnerable to such attacks and the effects of those attacks may be more severe than to adults. But what causes anxiety attacks? Listed below are a few of the causes of anxiety attacks:
School Phobia and Separation Anxiety When a toddler reaches a certain age, he or she develops school phobia. The exact cause for this is still unknown, but what occurs is, the child turns into excessively afraid of going to school. A toddler manifests this worry by creating causes and complaining ailments reminiscent of toothaches, headache, and abdomen cramps to maintain her or him from going to school. School phobia is usually linked to separation anxiety but the latter can manifest to conditions apart from at school (e.g. being with a gaggle of people or becoming a member of different family for the weekend).
Again, the exact purpose for that is unknown. Separation nervousness is excessive fear of being away from somebody whom the kid is comfortable being with. Tale-instructed indicators of separation anxiousness are similar to school phobia.
Stress Stress is linked to anxiety attacks. It might be a result of heavy responsibilities at house and in class, unfinished tasks, bodily and psychological abuse, a school bully, atmosphere that is unfit for the child's age, violence, etc.
Change in way of life A baby creates buddies at school and within the neighborhood. These mates would make her or him feel comfy and accepted. So when the household moves to a different place or to a distinct school, a child loses his pals and comfort he or she has established and forces him or her to start all over again. If the child can not address this traumatic state of affairs, it can lead to episodes of anxiety attack.
Oblique Reasons In lots of circumstances, anxiety attacks simply come out of the blue, or happen with no logical, clear or apparent reason. It may happen while the child is relaxed throughout the day and even while asleep. This may increasingly only happen only once. Maybe, an anxiety attack is caused by unresolved internal points, which are not directly linked with the trigger. For example, a child who experiences a death of a loved one may panic whenever a certain, almost similar situation happens. The traumatic experience that he or she went through in the past which are not processed properly can come out, in this case through an attack.
A child may additionally present episodes of anxiety attacks as a result of the problem at hand reminded her or him about household conflicts. Preventing in the household in addition to divorce of parents may be traumatic to a toddler that when witnessing an identical state of affairs, he or she goes into a panic.
Take observe that there is no single cause (and it takes a number of factors) for a kid to have an anxiety assault, but no matter it's, what's important is how do cope with it properly.
I need advice on what to do when my toddler does this...?
Often during the day, my 14 month old son will go into his room, and purposely close the door to his room. Then he will fuss (perhaps out of frustration?) when he can't get out. I have always went to his room and told him I was there and let him out. I guess I have a few questions about this. I read about there being some seperation anxiety in some toddlers.
1 How should I react when he does this?
2 Could he just be uncertain of us being there for him?
3 Has anyone experienced this with a toddler?
I would be appreciative of any advice or suggestions you can give me.
Thanks in Advance.
I think that's totally normal for a 14 mo old to do... you're being paranoid in worrying how to react and worrying if he's uncertain if you are there for him.....
When he does it and gets mad, just go open the door and tell him it's okay. Give him a hug and a kiss and let him play.
If you don't want the door to close, hang a towel over the top of the door and it won't shut.
That's what they do and it's just your job to do repetitive parenting right now.

The scientific expression to get a fearfulness of flying is "pteromechanophobia." It may also be named "aerophobia," "aviatophobia" or "aviophobia." By any name, it indicates the same thing: A fearfulness of flying in an airplane, helicopter or other comparable indicates.
Dread of flying is carefully in connection with acrophobia, and that is a anxiety of heights. Acrophobia is, in by itself, one of the most common phobias among the adult populace in the western planet. Anxiety of flying can even be in connection with claustrophobia, which is a concern of enclosed spaces. If you've ever been on an airplane, you understand that even however you are out into the fantastic wide open, the cabin by itself is usually uncomfortably cramped. Specially if you come about to be sitting next to Kevin Smith.
I, personally, had a mild dread of flying all through nearly all of my twenties, however it was by no means related to a concern of heights or perhaps a concern of enclosed spaces. Instead, it absolutely was a combination of a anxiety of passing away including a concern of not having command in the procedings.
Through the way, isn't it weird that there may be no medical name for your concern of passing away? It really is the one issue the majority of us anxiety essentially the most, but the medical community has yet to name it. Possibly the principle is the fact that it's this kind of a prevalent and healthy thing to anxiety that there may be no sense in naming it. It really is right to get scared of dying; it happens to be not a healthcare or psychological ailment. It really is purely how all residing elements are wired. You see it in dynamics as a lot as in human behavior; animals fight to their last to survive, no matter the scenario.
Anyway, for me a fearfulness of flying became closely linked to a dread of passing away right after the attacks around the Community Trade Center's Twin Towers on 9/11. I was living in New York City within the time, and was capable of observe the entire point unfold from my front stoop. The conclusion of my street used to finish inside a view from the twin towers, so I had a best look at in the day's proceedings.
The anxiety of losing control is almost certainly linked to that day as nicely, due to the fact it's so well documented that the terrorists have been competent to consider regulate on the airplanes prior to crashing them into your buildings, and no one on board was in a position to cease them. Anyone who's flown because then has to possess asked themselves how they would respond in the comparable circumstance.

Only man clogs his happiness with care destroying what is with thoughts of what may be. By John Dryden Find out about Test Anxiety Symptoms
How To Increase Your Capacity To Memorize Information & Overcome Test Anxiety
If you are a student who is trying to bring up your grades, there are a list of tricks that will help you to amplify your capacity to focus your concentration, absorb the data that you study, and bring it back to consciousness during an exam without being subjected to mental blocks or test anxiety. Here are the best ways that I know to establish good study habits:
(1) Create a place for study and study only in that place! Establish a peaceful room that will make possible concentration without any distractions. Some usual examples would be a library, a vacant classroom, or your home office. You will want to establish the habit of studying when you are in this place. So it is best to not use this place for other activities like daydreaming, watching TV, or playing music, etc.
BE SURE YOUR SPECIAL PLACE HAS:
(a) A comfy seat, but not excessively comfortable
(b) Your writing desk or table
(c) Excellent illumination
(d) Sufficient air flow
BE SURE YOUR SPECIAL PLACE DOES NOT HAVE:
(a) Views that will be distracting
(b) A telephone
(c) Distracting music
(d) A large screen television
(e) A companion who talks a lot
(f) A refrigerator filled with snacks
(2) Split your work into small, short-range projects.
(a) Set up small highly specific projects like, "I am going to study my English from 1 PM to 2 PM. Or else you will be setting yourself up to fail.
(b) Set a doable homework goal for the amount of time you are able to allocate. For example: finish reading chapter ten in my chemistry text, or complete a final version of my chemistry paper, etc. Set your goals when you you are ready to study but before you actually begin. Set realistic goals. You may do more than reach your goal, but set a reasonable goal even if it seems far too easy.
(3) Test Anxiety
(a) Some students experience physical symptoms for the most part, like feeling hot or cold, nausea, or faintness, etc.
(b) Other students experience mostly emotional symptoms, like feeling irritable, crying, or getting frustrated quickly.
(c) The main difficulty with anxiety is that it can make one have a memory block. Or it could make one have thoughts that are racing out of control.
(d) Although you may currently experience some level of anxiety while taking a test, you can learn to diminish that anxiety, or even completely eliminate it!
(e) Anxiety and the resultant stress are as a rule the main causes of a lack of the ability to focus your concentration. Stress can also trigger a mental block when one tries to remember information.
(f) hypnosis CD's can be utilized to relax your mind and focus your concentration. As your mind calms down, your ability to stay focused will increase. Similarly, a calm mind enhances your ability to retain information, and recall it when it is needed.
(g) Hypnosis and nlp CD's can be utilized to program your mind for the positive expectation of tranquility and the ability to bring back to mind the information during an exam. This is effective at diminishing or eliminating test anxiety.
(h) There are a number of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques that can quickly do away with a test phobia!

The doctor noticed I was a little depressed so she put me on some depression medicine and the very next morning I woke up to feed my son and started to have an attack. But never did I have any hiccups/burps/stomach problems.

We can easily manage if we will only take each day the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday's burden over again today and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it. By John Newton Find out about Of Anxiety Attacks
All About Anxiety Attacks
Anxiety attacks can happen anytime, anywhere when you least expect it.
Anxiety is what we always feel when we are in a tense situation, like studying harder for a major exam, rendering a speech in front of many people, or going on a blind date where you don't know what to expect; even a bride definitely feel anxious on her wedding day (maybe thinking, what if she'll be stood up by her groom! What a terrifying thought!). If you feel anxious or fear for certain circumstances or things and with logical reasons to be, it is just a normal and rational response. But, if you feel unexpected surges of overwhelming dread that comes without warning and for no reason at all, it is no longer regular anxiety but anxiety attack.
Anxiety attacks are far more intense than having the feeling of being stressed or anxious that most people experience. It is described as a sudden attack of intense fear or feelings of impending fate or disaster that strike without warning and for no apparent reason. And this can be immediately followed by several symptoms. These are caused by a shift in the way the Amygdala, the small organ in the brain which regulates the anxiety response, behaves when confronted with an anxiety provoking thought, sensation or situation. Anxiety attacks occur when a level of anxiety is reached which causes the Adrenalin to produce severe symptoms which reach a peak in just a matter of minutes. The peak of an attack can range anywhere from 5 to 30minutes, but the symptoms may last a little longer. The symptoms of anxiety attacks are completely harmless, although they can be very frightening. Anxiety attacks belong to a group of anxiety disorder, like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and agoraphobia.
Some of the symptoms of anxiety attack are intense heartbeat, difficulty of breathing, palpitation, nausea, excessive sweating and trembling, chest pains, fearful of going crazy or about to die, sudden chills, and the like. Some people may experience different or more anxiety attack symptoms but this does not mean that their condition is far worse or that you are suffering from different undiagnosed condition. And because we are all different, the symptoms during anxiety attacks can vastly vary. You might not find among the listed anxiety attack symptoms what you are experiencing and you'll start to think there's something very wrong with you. The list is just a guide only. Everyone reacts differently.
Anxiety attacks are always a sign of underlying anxiety disorder which itself can be treated successfully with or without having to go through medication or costly therapy. Linden method offers a cure on panic and anxiety attacks. According to this method, anxiety attacks are not a sign of illness. The way to cure it is to eliminate the causes that trigger anxiety attacks.
Sometimes I get them but I would also like to know if other people get them too. I know that people do but very few people are ever candid about it. I also get mild anxiety attacks when I'm in a very large crowd of people. Not that I am scared of people but I just feel very closed in around a bunch of people. I would like not hear about taking medication or seeing a doctor. Because what if there were no doctors or medications that you can take for it, Thank you and good advice is helpful.
Rigorous exercise. I had panic attacks into my early teenage years. Weightlifting and track helped get rid of them. It didn't happen overnight though.

Anxiety Disorders Symptoms - Causes of Panic Disorders
Anxiety disorders symptoms are numerous and include such things as social anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and phobias. Many people everywhere are identified as having a panic attacks throughout their lifetimes, and so many are seeking the right answers as to what has brought on this particular sickness, that may be quite significant. When you are brought up in a household in which a person has an anxiety disorder, you are essentially taught these types of anxiety behaviors also. Phobias are usually particularly common to be passed to members of the family. Insure relationships with dad and mom could also trigger anxiety disorders later on in your everyday living. Social constraints and culture could possibly play a role on this also, educating people to become troubled at certain times or fearful of certain things.
An anxiety disorder may also be the result of health factors not related to genetics. Phobias and other anxiety disorders sometimes develop due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, especially with the chemical serotonin, which also affects depression in some people. Evolution comes into play, because you automatically have a fight-or-flight system built into our brains. The foods we eat, amount we exercise, and sleep we get every night all play roles into how our brain functions.
Lastly, anxiety disorders may possibly develop as a result of anxiety. When you are stressed in relation to a problem, you may find that you slowly begin to wear out. Although our bodies are built to manage specific quantities of stress, over time, this merely breaks down and we cave in to anxiety, which sometimes develop into an anxiety disorder. Regardless of the reason why, on the other hand, it is simply important that you ask for help dealing with your anxiety disorders symptoms.

Do you have anxiety/panic attacks? I want to help you! I suffer from depression and panic anxiety disorder...?
It was ruining my life! I stayed in my room for 6 months! Luckily I have my anxiety about 99% under control and I am able to lead a normal life. I remember how horrible it was, and I didn't think I would ever get over it, but here I am. I want to offer some help to anyone going through this! I take 225 Mg off Effexor XR Daily, it worked wonders for me! Of course I still have symptoms of depression from time to time. Seperate yourself from your anxiety. Imagine a monster that lives in your brain, let's call him "Boo". He Lies. He Overexaggerates. He tells you to be afraid. He wants you to live in fear. FACE HIM. DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM. Every time Boo tells you to be afraid, tell him to fuck off! He lives off your fear. Every time you give into him he grows twice his size! Stand up for yourself. Don't let him take over your life. ITS YOUR LIFE, LIVE IT! Go out and do things. The more things you do, the easier it will become to control Boo! I hope this helps someone like it helped me!!!
Similar to seperating yourself from your eating disorder (in the book Life Without Ed). It's actually a very good concept, and seems to work for a lot of people. Actually, I've managed to 'list' my others (I've got DID, I don't have control when they take over, but I am learning to recognize/identify them). It's very helpful saying to yourself "No, that's something [whatever call/name your problem] would do. I would never do that, I'm in control not [the problem]."

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. By Elbert Hubbard Find out about Causes Anxiety Panic Attacks
Causes of Panic Attacks
The short and obvious answer: panic attacks are caused by high anxiety. But, what exactly is anxiety? Understanding how anxiety crops up will help you defeat panic attacks.
One of the biggest myths surrounding anxiety is that it is harmful and can lead to a number of various life-threatening conditions.
Definition of Anxiety
Anxiety is defined as a state of apprehension or fear resulting from the anticipation of a real or imagined threat, event, or situation. It is one of the most common human emotions experienced by people at some point in their lives.
However, most people who have never experienced a panic attack, or extreme anxiety, fail to realize the terrifying nature of the experience. Extreme dizziness, blurred vision, tingling and feelings of breathlessness—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
When these sensations occur and people do not understand why, they feel they have contracted an illness, or a serious mental condition. The threat of losing complete control seems very real and naturally very terrifying.
Fight/Flight Response: One of the root causes of panic attacks?
I am sure most of you have heard of the fight/flight response as an explanation for one of the root causes of panic attacks. Have you made the connection between this response and the unusual sensations you experience during and after a panic attack episode?
Anxiety is a response to a danger or threat. It is so named because all of its effects are aimed toward either fighting or fleeing from the danger. Thus, the sole purpose of anxiety is to protect the individual from harm. This may seem ironic given that you no doubt feel your anxiety is actually causing you great harm...perhaps the most significant of all the causes of panic attacks.
However, the anxiety that the fight/flight response created was vital in the daily survival of our ancient ancestors—when faced with some danger, an automatic response would take over that propelled them to take immediate action such as attack or run. Even in today's hectic world, this is still a necessary mechanism. It comes in useful when you must respond to a real threat within a split second.
Anxiety is a built-in mechanism to protect us from danger. Interestingly, it is a mechanism that protects but does not harm—an important point that will be elaborated upon later.
The Physical Manifestations of a Panic Attack: Other pieces of the puzzle to understand the causes of panic attacks. Nervousness and Chemical Effects...
When confronted with danger, the brain sends signals to a section of the nervous system. It is this system that is responsible for gearing the body up for action and also calms the body down and restores equilibrium. To carry out these two vital functions, the autonomic nervous system has two subsections, the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.
Although I don't want to become too "scientific," having a basic understanding of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system will help you understand the causes of panic attacks.
The sympathetic nervous system is the one we tend to know all too much about because it primes our body for action, readies us for the “fight or flight” response, while the parasympathetic nervous system is the one we love dearly as it serves as our restoring system, which returns the body to its normal state.
When either of these systems is activated, they stimulate the whole body, which has an “all or nothing” effect. This explains why when a panic attack occurs, the individual often feels a number of different sensations throughout the body.
The sympathetic system is responsible for releasing the adrenaline from the adrenal glands on the kidneys. These are small glands located just above the kidneys. Less known, however, is that the adrenal glands also release adrenaline, which functions as the body’s chemical messengers to keep the activity going. When a panic attack begins, it does not switch off as easily as it is turned on. There is always a period of what would seem increased or continued anxiety, as these messengers travel throughout the body. Think of them as one of the physiological causes of panic attacks, if you will.
After a period of time, the parasympathetic nervous system gets called into action. Its role is to return the body to normal functioning once the perceived danger is gone. The parasympathetic system is the system we all know and love, because it returns us to a calm relaxed state.
When we engage in a coping strategy that we have learned, for example, a relaxation technique, we are in fact willing the parasympathetic nervous system into action. A good thing to remember is that this system will be brought into action at some stage whether we will it or not. The body cannot continue in an ever-increasing spiral of anxiety. It reaches a point where it simply must kick in, relaxing the body. This is one of the many built-in protection systems our bodies have for survival.
You can do your best with worrying thoughts, keeping the sympathetic nervous system going, but eventually it stops. In time, it becomes a little smarter than us, and realizes that there really is no danger. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent—modern science is always discovering amazing patterns of intelligence that run throughout the cells of our body. Our body seems to have infinite ways of dealing with the most complicated array of functions we take for granted. Rest assured that your body’s primary goal is to keep you alive and well.
Not so convinced?
Try holding your breath for as long as you can. No matter how strong your mental will is, it can never override the will of the body. This is good news—no matter how hard you try to convince yourself that you are gong to die from a panic attack, you won’t. Your body will override that fear and search for a state of balance. There has never been a reported incident of someone dying from a panic attack.
Remember this next time you have a panic attack; he causes of panic attacks cannot do you any physical harm. Your mind may make the sensations continue longer than the body intended, but eventually everything will return to a state of balance. In fact, balance (homeostasis) is what our body continually strives for.
The interference for your body is nothing more than the sensations of doing rigorous exercise. Our body is not alarmed by these symptoms. Why should it be? It knows its own capability. It’s our thinking minds that panic, which overreact and scream in sheer terror! We tend to fear the worst and exaggerate our own sensations. A quickened heart beat becomes a heart attack. An overactive mind seems like a close shave with schizophrenia. Is it our fault? Not really—we are simply diagnosing from poor information.
Cardiovascular Effects Activity in the sympathetic nervous system increases our heartbeat rate, speeds up the blood flow throughout the body, ensures all areas are well supplied with oxygen and that waste products are removed. This happens in order to prime the body for action.
A fascinating feature of the “fight or flight” mechanism is that blood (which is channelled from areas where it is currently not needed by a tightening of the blood vessels) is brought to areas where it is urgently needed.
For example, should there be a physical attack, blood drains from the skin, fingers, and toes so that less blood is lost, and is moved to “active areas” such as the thighs and biceps to help the body prepare for action.
This is why many feel numbness and tingling during a panic attack-often misinterpreted as some serious health risk-such as the precursor to a heart attack. Interestingly, most people who suffer from anxiety often feel they have heart problems. If you are really worried that such is the case with your situation, visit your doctor and have it checked out. At least then you can put your mind at rest.
Respiratory Effects
One of the scariest effects of a panic attack is the fear of suffocating or smothering. It is very common during a panic attack to feel tightness in the chest and throat. I’m sure everyone can relate to some fear of losing control of your breathing. From personal experience, anxiety grows from the fear that your breathing itself would cease and you would be unable to recover. Can a panic attack stop our breathing? No.
A panic attack is associated with an increase in the speed and depth of breathing. This has obvious importance for the defense of the body since the tissues need to get more oxygen to prepare for action. The feelings produced by this increase in breathing, however, can include breathlessness, hyperventilation, sensations of choking or smothering, and even pains or tightness in the chest. The real problem is that these sensations are alien to us, and they feel unnatural.
Having experienced extreme panic attacks myself, I remember that on many occasions, I would have this feeling that I couldn’t trust my body to do the breathing for me, so I would have to manually take over and tell myself when to breathe in and when to breathe out. Of course, this didn’t suit my body’s requirement of oxygen and so the sensations would intensify—along with the anxiety. It was only when I employed the technique I will describe for you later, did I let the body continue doing what it does best—running the whole show.
Importantly, a side-effect of increased breathing, (especially if no actual activity occurs) is that the blood supply to the head is actually decreased. While such a decrease is only a small amount and is not at all dangerous, it produces a variety of unpleasant but harmless symptoms that include dizziness, blurred vision, confusion, sense of unreality, and hot flushes.
Other Physical Effects of Panic Attacks:
Now that we've discussed some of the primary physiological causes of panic attacks, there are a number of other effects that are produced by the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, none of which are in any way harmful.
For example, the pupils widen to let in more light, which may result in blurred vision, or “seeing” stars, etc. There is a decrease in salivation, resulting in dry mouth. There is decreased activity in the digestive system, which often produces nausea, a heavy feeling in the stomach, and even constipation. Finally, many of the muscle groups tense up in preparation for “fight or flight” and this results in subjective feelings of tension, sometimes extending to actual aches and pains, as well as trembling and shaking.
Overall, the fight/flight response results in a general activation of the whole bodily metabolism. Thus, one often feels hot and flushed and, because this process takes a lot of energy, the person generally feels tired and drained.
Mental Manifestations: Are the causes of panic attacks all in my head? is a question many people wonder to themselves.
The goal of the fight/flight response is making the individual aware of the potential danger that may be present. Therefore, when activated, the mental priority is placed upon searching the surroundings for potential threats. In this state one is highly-strung, so to speak. It is very difficult to concentrate on any one activity, as the mind has been trained to seek all potential threats and not to give up until the threat has been identified. As soon as the panic hits, many people look for the quick and easiest exit from their current surroundings, such as by simply leaving the bank queue and walking outside. Sometimes the anxiety can heighten, if we perceive that leaving will cause some sort of social embarrassment.
If you have a panic attack while at the workplace but feel you must press on with whatever task it is you are doing, it is quite understandable that you would find it very hard to concentrate. It is quite common to become agitated and generally restless in such a situation. Many individuals I have worked with who have suffered from panic attacks over the years indicated that artificial light—such as that which comes from computer monitors and televisions screens—can can be one of the causes of panic attacks by triggering them or worsen a panic attack, particularly if the person is feeling tired or run down.
This is worth bearing in mind if you work for long periods of time on a computer. Regular break reminders should be set up on your computer to remind you to get up from the desk and get some fresh air when possible.
In other situations, when during a panic attack an outside threat cannot normally be found, the mind turns inwards and begins to contemplate the possible illness the body or mind could be suffering from. This ranges from thinking it might have been something you ate at lunch, to the possibility of an oncoming cardiac arrest.
The burning question is: Why is the fight/flight response activated during a panic attack even when there is apparently nothing to be frightened of?
Upon closer examination of the causes of panic attacks, it would appear that what we are afraid of are the sensations themselves—we are afraid of the body losing control. These unexpected physical symptoms create the fear or panic that something is terribly wrong. Why do you experience the physical symptoms of the fight/flight response if you are not frightened to begin with? There are many ways these symptoms can manifest themselves, not just through fear.
For example, it may be that you have become generally stressed for some reason in your life, and this stress results in an increase in the production of adrenaline and other chemicals, which from time to time, would produce symptoms....and which you perceive as the causes of panic attacks.
This increased adrenaline can be maintained chemically in the body, even after the stress has long gone. Another possibility is diet, which directly affects our level of stress. Excess caffeine, alcohol, or sugar is known for causing stress in the body, and is believed to be one of the contributing factors of the causes of panic attacks (Chapter 5 gives a full discussion on diet and its importance).
Unresolved emotions are often pointed to as possible trigger of panic attacks, but it is important to point out that eliminating panic attacks from your life does not necessarily mean analyzing your psyche and digging into your subconscious. The “One Move” technique will teach you to deal with the present moment and defuse the attack along with removing the underlying anxiety that sparks the initial anxiety.
