Natural post-partum depression treatments while breastfeeding? Plus, iron supplementation?

I believe I may be dealing with a bit of postpartum depression and am looking for some natural treatments that are safe while breastfeeding.
A few things I seem to recall hearing about are Red Raspberry Leaf and Evening Primrose Oil.
Also, I struggle with anemia and, on top of the iron in my prenatals, I take Floradix Floravital Iron+Herbs. I seem to recall hearing that iron supplementation and red raspberry leaf are not to mix, but do not recall why or even know if it is true.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me or offer advice?

I am looking for a natural treatment for OCD, Anxiety, and Depression?

I have tried prozac, but I do not like the side effects not to mention that I had a very bad allergic reaction. I am looking to try the natural approach first, but cannot afford to see a homeopathic doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find information or who I should ask about this. My therapist suggested a pharmacist but the pharmacist told me that the only solution is medication.

Your only solution is NOT medication. Of course a pharmacist would tell you that, so they can sell more medication to you.

I am 38 years old and from the time I was 10 years old until 2 years ago when I changed my diet, I also suffered with OCD, depression and anxiety.

The OCD was fairly mild, things like checking the iron was off 15 times before I left the house. I managed to get this under control by touching the iron once and saying loudly “I am checking the iron now and it is definitely off” and then when I had another urge to check it, I would just repeat my earlier wording in my head and be 100% sure that I had definitely turned it off. It is a long slog but after a while you can re-pattern your thoughts.

hypnosis would probably help with OCD too.

My depression and anxiety were quite severe and at one stage 15 years ago, I went through an intense suicidal period.

My doctor kept trying to get me onto different medications but I resisted as I wanted to find a more natural way. I have seen many people trying to come off anti-depressants and it is not a pretty sight believe me.

So in the last 5 years I did the following:

I found things like reducing or completely abstaining from alcohol to be very useful, since alcohol is a depressant.

I found daily chakra meditation to be very helpful.

I found daily relaxation meditation to be very helpful.

I found bach flower remedies to be very helpful - the rescue remedy was very good for my anxiety

I found gentle exercise (yoga, swimming) to be very helpful.

I found reiki treatments to be very helpful.

All of the above did not cure me, but they certainly helped me to live a normal life and avoid medications.

However, the main saving grace for me was 2 years ago when I changed my diet.

I went from a SAD (standard american diet) to a Raw Vegan diet and my depression and anxiety completely disappeared.

It is quite amazing really. Sometimes I lose the plot and start eating cooked foods (i.e. - over the holiday season) and my depression and anxiety both return.

And when I eat Raw Vegan foods again, my depression and anxiety disappear.

Apparently this is quite common and many people have found their life-long depression vanishes once they change to a Raw Vegan diet, especially if you also consume certified organic produce.

There are lots of books, DVDs and websites dedicated to the Raw Vegan lifestyle, so maybe you should read up on it and seriously consider making the change.

<li>    Chronic but vague aches, pains, headaches, or digestive problems
<li>    Constipation,
<li>    Reduced or absent sex drive
<li>    Slowed movement or speech
<li>    Changes in the menstrual cycle in women
<li>    Sudden drop in performance levels at work
<li>    Not wanting to take part in social activities
<li>    Wishing to avoid contact with friends
<li>    Difficulties cropping up at home and in family life
<li>    Crying for no apparent reason

Who would be the best doctor to go to for anxiety?

I am having a relapse with my anxiety attacks and am interested in attempting to treat them naturally instead of with Paxil as I did before due to how uncomfortable the with drawl symptoms made me if I was unable to afford to refill my meds. It's been nearly two years since I have had attacks this bad and frequent, but I have also added more stress in my life with returning to school and being in a serious relationship. What I am wondering is if there are any psychiatrists in the Peoria, Il area who will be OK with treating my symptoms with something other than prescription drugs. Also, I am considering going to a dietitian and getting a hair test done to see if I have any sort of deficiencies causing my anxiety. I have noticed over the years that my mother and also suffers from depression and certain anxieties so I was wondering if anxiety is genetic, or if the deficiencies could be genetic and causing anxiety in us both.

There is evidence that anxiety and depression is genetic. I would go back to seeing a psychiatrist and about the medication try checking into the 4 dollar plans at wal-mart and other pharmacies before start on one.

I am a 43 yr old woman recently diagnosed with depression for the 2nd time in my life & do NOT want to take 'traditional' medicines this time (2 years on Paxil during my divorce made me emotionally {& sexually} dead, sweaty & nearly a zombie). Any personal experiences & suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't know. But don't write-off the traditional medicines. Paxil may not have worked for you, but others might.

Vitamins to get rid of Depression?

Hello, I have been taking GNC Fish Oil (300mg x 3 a day), B-Complex 50 (1 a day), Vitamin D-3 (800 IU x 1 a day), and a Centrum Multi-Vitamin daily for a little over two weeks to lift my major depression I am experiencing right now but have had no relief so far. Am I doing something wrong? I really wanted to try a natural approach but I find myself tired, irritable, and frustrated each day still. Along with this I am spending more time outdoors and really trying to stay motivated. Should this have kicked in yet? It's so hard to live life like this. I took Effexor XR three years ago and it was so hard to wean off of that medication that I am really trying to stay away from other meds. I also suffer from Anxiety and panic attacks which makes me more sensitive to meds and I can hardly tolerate the side effects of any of the SSRI's. I was wondering if any one knows any natural remedies for pmt and depression?

I had a baby 7 months ago and quite often am feeling low and suffer bad pmt. I dont really want to start taking prescription drugs and was wondering if any one knew of any natural remedies?

Ladytoob's advice is very important. Getting out really is important, preferably as part of a regime or 'routine' sort of therapy. I suppose all our conditions are different, but methods that avoid more chemicals are almost always preferable (after all, even herbal SSRIs such as St. John's Wort, are still chemicals).

Counseling and psycho-therapy have helped me enormously, but they only 'help' you! They don't 'cure' you. You have got to establish an objective (or objectives) towards which to work. (Which of course a good counselor or therapist can help you to do - but my own hunch is that if you have already established these yourself, by whatever means, then therapy is probably much more likely to be effective. Mainly because you will make more productive use of your, sadly short, courses of these - assuming you are not spectacularly wealthy).

To help you do this consider, firstly, in some depth - in fact, great depth - the following five categories which, I believe must be addressed in order to have a good quality of life: 1) Food in your tummy; seriously: not just wether you can afford to eat, but really look at what you know about healthy, enjoyable nutrition; preparing food so it is (at least a little bit) a highlight of your day, etc. 2) A roof over your head; as above: are your home surroundings nice? (Not necessarily 'expensive') just nice. Not cluttered up, full of junk-mail, dusty, difficult to keep clean and tidy - not laboratory-like - just clean, tidy and reasonably hygienic, and therefore aesthetically pleasant even before you added your own personal touches. 3) Someone to love/love you; any meanings, not merely intimate. 4) Something to do; a regular as it were "meaning in life" (your job, your child). 5) Something to look forward to; even if it is merely ensuring that you daily make time to prepare a really good meal, or go to bed a bit earlier than before, to read a great book (pick something to make you laugh as well as cry - just the former might have your head in clouds or sand, while just the latter will make you depressed! - ANYTHING by Bill Bryson will work, here!)

Really 'go to town' in a big way and think about the widest possible ways - as well as the small ones - of filling these areas up. But make sure that you only fill them up with things you actually like. (eg, and importantly: the "something to do" bit, particularly if it is a job. Some jobs are much more 'likable' if they are only part-time).

And secondly, (though there's no particular order in any of this) be absolutely determined not to live up to other people's expectations of you. Make up your mind about who you are (you can always change it, later - people do change!) and be YOURSELF!! Doing this can create quite a large explosion, but rest assured, the ones that are still left standing there after the blast, by definition, will be your real friends!

Light Therapy
Getting enough sunlight is a natural mood booster, and a lack of sunlight can lead to depression. Getting out in the air and the sunlight for a walk or a run or other exercise can be helpful to boost your mood and can be a double-threat to depression because you are getting exercise as well. If you cannot get out in the sunlight for any reason or if you can't get enough sunlight, you can use lamps that simulate natural sunlight to help you boost your mood with this light therapy.
