Labor Unions Have Outlived Their Usefulness and Must Go

Labor Unions in the United States have outlived their usefulness and need to be outlawed. As we look back we see that the Labor Union movement is barely over 125 years old. It can be tracked back to about 1880, maybe a bit beyond. When we consider the conditions for workers back then and through the Great Depression, the need for labor unions is apparent. If not for unions, children would be working in factories, people would be working much longer hours every day, and there would be no weekends off; all these are important facts. I believe unions were absolutely necessary and historically served a good purpose. I also believe they no longer serve a positive purpose, but they have actually contributed in a big way to our current economic crisis. We have come too far for our society to allow the conditions mentioned above, even without labor unions.

Consider that in modern times there is not one major corporation subject to labor union organization of its employees that has been successful. Not a single one! Oh, you will be able to find some second tier companies that seem successful in spite of unionization, but on some of these the jury is still out. Additionally, if you look at heavily unionized states, like California, it is pretty easy to see the enormous negative impact of the labor unions. If the state of California were not controlled by the unions and their unreasonable contracts, it would have a far easier path out of its financial woes.

Let’s take a look at the General Motors situation. With the U.S. economy continuing to shed jobs—In Detroit, the UAW has been in the way of a reasonable solution. While they have agreed to some concessions as part of the GM's bankruptcy negotiations with the federal government, their real goal was and is to keep GM afloat to provide jobs for their membership. GM has become about jobs, not about building automobiles. It should have been allowed to fail without government intervention, and it most likely would have were it not for the labor unions. Let’s face it… had the labor unions been eliminated five years ago GM would probably not have found itself in it’s current financial condition. Oh, I know there are some other factors, but those probably could have been dealt with were it not for the unions.

So, GM exists only to provide jobs for the union workers, and for no other reason. Even our government has acknowledged that allowing GM to disappear would cause such unemployment directly and in allied businesses, that it may be the kiss of death for our economy. However, having said that, it is my bet that GM will be allowed to fail as soon as it is determined that the economy could survive the impact.

A wise move by the United States government would be to outlaw all labor unions right now, before it has to deal with the Union Bosses when the time to let GM fail arrives. Outlawing all labor unions at this time would also prove to be an economic blessing to California and other states finding themselves in a similar position.

Tough times require tough decisions. I hope we are up to the challenge.

First, try what they want, there is no way they will manage to outlaw psyciatric medicine......Psyciatric illnesses are more and more accepted as true illnesses, and not just "things that are in our heads".

All it takes is looking back to 50 years ago, 100 years ago.....were mental illnesses present then....yeah...and most of those people were just locked up in mental institutions because it was hopeless with no way of treating them. Read a little bit on lobotomys, and why that was seen to be such a good treatment for many people at the time. It was because there was some sliver in hope in it for so many people that were in completely hopeless situations.

They have just passed laws last fall that REQUIRES medical coverage to cover mental health eqally to other illnesses. We have gotten to where it is recongised as needing access to treatment just as much as any physical illness, it would be a complete turn around and make it illegal to treat.

And post partum deprssion, I doubt many people outside that group are going to agree with blocking that legislation. And I doubt they could get many, if any, legislators, to side with that small group, over siding with NAMI (National Aliance on Mental Illness) and other groups oout there that fight for Mental illness and education about mental illness.

This group is probably assosiated with Scietnology.....they dont believe in mental illnesses.....or in most medication in general. (actually just googled it and found their web page and it "was founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology")

Key heart attack tests are:

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG). This is a graphic record of the electrical activity of the heart as it contracts and relaxes. The ECG can detect abnormal heartbeats, some areas of damage, inadequate blood flow, and heart enlargement.

Blood test. A blood test will be done routinely to check for enzymes or other substances that are released when cells begin to die. These are "markers" of the amount of damage to your heart.

Nuclear scan. This test shows areas of the heart that lack blood flow and are damaged. It also can reveal problems with the heart’s pumping action. A small amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein, usually in the arm. A scanning camera positioned over the heart records whether the nuclear material is taken up by the heart muscle (healthy areas) or not (damaged areas). The camera also can evaluate how well the heart muscle pumps blood. This test can be done during both rest and exercise, enhancing the usefulness of its results.

Coronary angiography This test is used to check blockages and narrowed areas inside coronary arteries. A fine tube (catheter) is threaded through an artery of an arm or leg up into the heart. A dye that shows up on X ray is then injected into the blood vessel, and the vessels and heart are filmed as the heart pumps. The picture is called an angiogram or arteriogram.

Dawson's Creek (Season 5) DVD Review

During its six-year run, Dawson's Creek was nominated for 12 Teen Choice Awards, making it one of the most successful original programs in WB network history. Taking place in the fictional location of Capeside, Massachusetts, the series was actually filmed in the real-life township of Wilmington, North Carolina (however the show's theme song was written and performed by Paula Cole, who calls Massachusetts home). Creator Kevin Williamson is said to have modeled the characters in the series after part and parcel of his own adolescent years... Dawson's Creek centers around the personal universe of several high school teenagers, each of them friends of title character Dawson Leery. Together, they form the basis of a teen drama series that has taken its place among the pop culture icons of its era. Any recommendations for a family-oriented movie?

Any unique family oriented movies out there (excluding the standard Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, etc.) that you could recommend for a family with 4 kids under the age of 7?

They are going through some hard times (mother's health is not well) and I'd like to get them a gift of DVD's they can enjoy to help distract them from the high levels of anxiety.

My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki, especially if you're looking for a movie that deals with a mother's illness (she ends the movie recovering), making it seem a bit more "normal". My kids watched it over and over and over...

The VeggieTales series is always fun, if the parents aren't offended by the Bible verses at the end of each episode. I'm not Christian, but my kids loved them anyway. Especially the silly songs.

There must be a hundred out there. I'd suggest renting a few, especially if your local library offers free ones, before buying.

A 1977 film by film-maker Mel Brooks entitled, High Anxiety takes a comedic look at the mental health industry and the various approaches taken to treat anxiety disorder. The movie was given two Golden Globe nominations even if it did not do too well at the box office. Brooks, known throughout Hollywood as a comedic genius, deliberately made this movie as a spook of the more-serious psychological thrillers made by Alfred Hitchcock.

While it is true that laughter is the best medicine, high anxiety is certainly no laughing matter. In real life,
High anxiety can lead to panic attacks, phobia and other disturbing behavior associated with excessive nervousness or fear. It is an unpleasant feeling that is often accompanied by palpitations, chest pain, nausea, and headaches.

But what exactly is the cause of anxiety? According to medical experts, a "re-setting" of an organ in the brain called "amygdala." Amygdala is an ancient Greek word for almond. The amygdala, shaped like an almond, is found inside the medial temporal lobes of the brain. As part of the limbic system, it performs a role in the processing of emotional reactions and memory. This organ is connected to several brain centers such as the visual cortex and the neocortex. In recent laboratory research, people who were made to view depressing images or films showed changes in their glucose metabolism. After watching horrible scenes such as a plane crash or predatory scenes in animals, men were found to have had increased glucose metabolism on the right side of the amygdala. Women, on the other hand, developed increased metabolism on the left side of the said organ.

If left uncontrolled, emotional disorders can cause major health problems, suffer poor performance at work or in school, and even cause damage to their professional and personal relationships. To avoid a total mental, emotional and physical breakdown, people suffering from emotional disorders should consult a doctor or a therapist. Often, after a careful interview and evaluation, the doctor would prescribe
anti anxiety medication. The drugs are given to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety. These prescription pills work to block the neurotransmitters that are known to influence cases of depression. It is very important to control depression because, as medical histories have shown, it is one of the most common causes of relationship problems, health degradation, and even in the rise of suicidal thoughts among depressed individuals.

One of the more effective prescriptions today is bupropion, an antidepressant and a substance used to control excessive smoking. Clinical studies involving the introduction of multi-placebo samples showed that the use of bupropion is effective for the treatment of depression. The said substance is said to be the fourth most prescribed antidepressant in America today, grossing over 21 million prescriptions since it was released in the market. First developed in 1966, bupropion was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1984 for medical and therapeutic use.
Today, bupropion is marketed under the brand name Wellbutrin, which is strictly a prescription drug that comes in slow release and extended release variants. If taken without doctor supervision, the drug may cause seizures. It is also not recommended for patients below 18 years old. But under the care of a doctor or a health professional, the of use of this drug can be the fastest way to remove the symptoms of excessive fear and apprehension.

A Healthy Dose of Laughter therapy

Laughter is contagious and good humor is easily passed on to other people around you. Basically, it feels good to feel good, and laughter is the key to changing your mood and spirit. Of course you can’t always be in a good mood. Some people and situations are so annoying that it’s almost impossible to stay pleasant and friendly. However, those people who find laughter in everyday life are using humor as a healthy form of therapy.

There is a whole new field of therapeutic laughter where humor is used to treat chronic pain associated with cancers, arthritis, depression, and anxiety. Many doctors and therapists prescribe to their patients a daily dose of jokes, comedies, games, light-hearted movies or anything that causes a hearty belly laugh or at least a few good chuckles.

Research is showing that by watching a 15-30 minute segment of a funny sit-com or movie, you can increase blood flow to the heart and reduce the strain and stress put on it. Even the anticipation of laughter has benefits by lowering stress hormones and increasing your natural pain defenses. Just 10 minutes of good hearty laughter can keep you pain free for hours.

I recommend watching reruns of MASH, Seinfeld, the Cosby Show, Two and a Half Men and Scrubs for a guaranteed daily dose of laughter. Jay Leno’s Headlines are always good for a jolly belly laugh and old–time comedians like Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, etc can be just what the doctor ordered.

Encouraging others to laugh will help you maintain your sense of humor and develop it into a daily habit. Not only will you learn to appreciate the lighter side of life, but you will also live longer, since laughter is associated with boosting immune cell activity and reducing the high levels of stress hormones linked to certain diseases.

Laughing makes you feel better and it’s a lot of fun. When you see people laughing, you can’t help but join in to share in their merriment. Laughter is contagious. Don’t just catch it. Be the carrier!
