Depression Mental Illness Quotes:

Fear is the father of courage and the mother of safety. By Henry H. Tweedy Find out about Depression Mental Illness

Depression mental illness

Do you suffer from depression?  Are you close to someone who suffers from depression?  Do you try to hide this fact from the rest of the world?  Depression is a mental illness. MENTAL illness.  Oh that can’t be admitted to anyone!  Why not?  We accept that our physical body becomes ill, gets diseased, sustains injury so why not our brain?

There is such a stigma attached that we are kept from disclosing to others what is wrong. Others appear to think that a sufferer is either “mad” or needs to pull himself together.

Fortunately society is coming round to the realisation that depression is as much an illness as cancer.  For this reason it is becoming easier for the sufferer to seek help by admitting to himself that there is something wrong which needs medical attention.

How do you know when to see your doctor, or persuade your family member or friend that she should seek help?  Well depression can come suddenly or creep up gradually so you will decide by what you see or feel.  Sudden depression can descend as a full blown mental illness for which the doctor, or ambulance, will immediately be called.  In these cases it is taken out of the hands of the sufferer.

Supposing though it has crept up very slowly and is held at bay at certain times but comes out at others.  Then you will need to look for various symptoms.  Make out a check list and actively observe what is happening.

  • Mood is depressed.  By this I do not mean that the sufferer is a bit blue. This is an ongoing sadness and emptiness. Can be expressed by appearing very tearful.  Cannot be shaken off.
  • feelings of worthlessness.  Not wanting to tackle anything because of the sureness that it will not turn out right  as they are useless at everything
  • Lack of interest.  Cannot get enthused by tasks or events which have in the past been a joy.  Doesn’t want to do anything about it.  Maybe does try but can’t get involved.  Takes no pleasure in anything.  Everything is pointless.
  • Lack of concentration.  Unable to keep the mind focused on the task in hand.  May flit from one thing to another without achieving any end result.
  • Can’t sleep, or sleeps too long.  Depression often turns a person into an insomniac.  Can’t get to sleep easily.  Then wakes often throughout the night taking a long time to get off to sleep again.  Can have trouble waking and getting up when morning comes.
  • Lethargy.  Throughout the day feeling tired and lacking in energy
  • Weight loss.  There may be a lack of interest in eating and drinking and over time this will result in weight loss without conscious dieting or exercise.  Tempt with little and often but don’t expect the sufferer to tuck into a three course lunch.
  • Thoughts of death and/or suicide.  May have ideas as to committing suicide or even some sort of plan.

If you keep a record of what you see or feel over a two week time span you will discover just how much affect this mental illness is having.  Don’t expect to see all these symptoms.  Also it is not always easy to spot as there may be quite a lot of cover up if the sufferer is at a stage where he can attempt to put on a front for others to see.

Let’s suppose that the sufferer is someone close to you, perhaps within the family.  You see them everyday.  You will be able to keep an eye on the condition so that you are aware of what is happening when the sufferer is entering an episode of depression.  The person himself does not always notice.  If you can see an episode starting you can suggest the taking of the prescribed medication.

Be prepared.  Depression very, very rarely goes away forever.  It recurs.  Just be ready to take action on behalf of the sufferer.

Knowing about this illness helps both sufferers and carers. For more information about depression, visit:  Depression FAQs

Depression Disorder Treatment Quotes:

Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt. By William Shakespeare Measure for Measure1604 Find out about Depression Disorder Treatment

The Pain of Bipolar Depression Disorder

Bipolar depression disorder generally occurs before the age of 30 years and may first develop during adolescence, but most commonly presents its symptoms in the late teens and early 20s. It is a type of mood disorder that exhibits marked changes in mood between extreme elation or happiness and severe depression. Bipolar disorder used to be referred to as manic depression.

Like other mental illnesses, bipolar disorder cannot yet be identified physiologically; for example, through a blood test or a brain scan. Therefore, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder is made on the basis of symptoms, course of illness, and, when available, family history. The diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV).

A person with bipolar depression disorder experiences cycling moods that usually swing from being overly elated or irritable (mania) to sad and hopeless (depression) and then back again, with periods of normal moods in between. There are statistics that say that one in five people will suffer from depression at least once during their life.

Symptoms of depression include: loss of interest in usual activities, prolonged sad or irritable mood, loss of energy or fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, sleeping too much or inability to sleep, drop in grades and inability to concentrate, inability to experience pleasure, appetite loss or overeating, anger, worry, and anxiety, thoughts of death or suicide.

Symptoms of manic states are varied and include restlessness, increased energy, euphoric mood, racing thoughts, poor judgment, intrusive or provocative behavior, difficulty concentrating, and a decreased need for sleep.

The exact causes of bipolar disorder aren't known, but stressful life events, un-resolvable problems, or emotional damage in childhood, possibly combined with genetic factors may play a role. Scientists are also studying about the possible causes of bipolar disorder through several kinds of studies. As the causes are more clearly identified and defined through research, scientists will gain a better understanding of the underlying causes of the illness, and eventually may be able to predict which types of treatment will work most effectively. As it stands now it is thought that bipolar depression disorder is caused by electrical and chemical processes in the brain not functioning correctly.

Unfortunately, for most individuals, lifelong treatment may be required to prevent recurrent manic and depressive episodes. They should try to identify the features of the illness that are distinct to that individual, including the warning signs of recurrent manic or depressive episodes, so that someone in treatment can get immediate help to ward off those symptoms. Failure to seek help can lead to suicide so the most important factor in any treatment is the sufferer's acceptance of some form of counseling and/ or medication.

Bipolar depression disorder is a serious mental illness that can be successfully treated with proper psychological counseling and medication. It is important that anyone exhibiting the signs or symptoms of this disease seek help so they can properly manage this condition.

Hormone treatment for depression?

I recently visitied a D.O. and a hormone test has revelaed that my hormones, specifically my cortisol, is high when it should be low and low when it should be high. Additionally, I demonstrate a lot of the symptoms of an adrenal disorder: depression, irregular menstral cycles, skin conditions, etc. My doctor has reccomended adrenal stress end (?) to treat my depression, but I have heard that hormone treatment for non-menpausal women is risky at best, a crock at worst. (I mean, you can get this stuff over the counter for goodnes sake!) I'm only 26! Does anyone have anicdotes or advice to share?

You may also want to have your thyroid checked. I would highly recommend seeing an Endocrinologist as they specialize in treating many of the symptoms you've mentioned. Best of luck to you, I've been through it too.

Depression Zealand Quotes:

Fear makes strangers of people who would be friends. By Shirley Maclaine Find out about Depression Zealand

Amazing Discovery for Enjoying Life More – Natural Relaxation

To really enjoy ourselves in life, we often feel that we have to do something special. We dine at a fashionable new restaurant, go to a party or see the latest movie. We seek out fun and new experiences as an attempt to free ourselves from stress, depression, worries and troubles.

Sarah McCrum, a relaxation expert at the Academy of Potential Education in New Zealand said that "soon, we find that these activities only give us temporary relief, an excited feeling that passes and not a long lasting sense of enjoyment that only natural relaxation can bring."

After all this excitement and entertainment, we often feel tired or even exhausted. It is similar to a toy that uses batteries to work. Eventually after playing with the toy, the batteries run out and the toy stops working. This is similar to what happens to us when we rely on our own energy supply-energy from our body and organs, which is limited.

When we rely on our own energy supply, we get tired more easily. We find it difficult to enjoy ourselves and may even feel a sense of depression. To escape stress and recharge our energy, we often sleep, go on vacation or adjust our busy schedule. But these stress relief solutions are only temporary. What we need is to find new ways to constantly get more energy. When we have more energy, life is automatically more enjoyable.

Often, when we are doing any activity we are either thinking about what we are doing or thinking about something completely different. We might even start to worry. Frequently, we are unconsciously in a state of tension, and are simply not physically and emotionally at peace. As a result, we stop energy from entering and flowing through our body. And then our meridians aren't open and relaxed, so we get tired and find it difficult to experience joy.

When we learn how to receive and flow with energy, we start to appreciate the world in a completely different way. When we are open, happy and experiencing natural relaxation, we can receive a higher source of life energy - quality energy that is light and fresh, making us more positive and glowing. Everything around us becomes brighter and more peaceful, and our experiences change for the better.

Everything we do is automatically more enjoyable because we have quality energy that gives us motivation and restoration. For example, sleep is more refreshing, music sounds more rhythmic and food tastes better. We are interested in the world around us and we have an inner confidence that we can solve our problems. We don't worry or feel depression and we can enjoy being in the moment.

Perhaps you already knew that you need natural relaxation, but what is it, truly? Give yourself the time and patience to, explore, learn and practice. Give yourself permission to receive greater health, happiness and peace.

Weight Loss for Summer?

Hi there,

I am a chubby eighteen year old receptionist living in New Zealand. I have always had issues with my weight and have done my share of pounding the treadmill and going to weight watchers meetings.

It is 13 weeks until Christmas and my birthday (21st Dec) and I really want to fit into my little mini shorts without giving my aunts and uncles a cellulite blast at Christmas lunch.

I am really want to enjoy my summer, i feel to do this I may need to loose around 10kgs. But in 13 weeks that feels impossible. I am a gym member and go 3-5times a week but have a major addiction to binge eating, so strong I just eat until i feel sick with guilt and depression over the 2 kitkat chunky chocolate bars, moro gold and 2 packs of wine gums.

Please, I need advice on how to kick my habit and get my mini short body.

Thanks

Well you got the first step down, going to the gym regurlary. Make sure that you're doing 30-45min of cardio at least 5 times per week, enough to be winded. You also should be doing strength training with light weight and many reps. This will help boost your metabolism and trim/tone your body. You also admitted to having a binge eating problem. The only way you're going to be able to drop the poulds is to start eating healthy and watch your portion size. If this is something you will have a hard time doing alone, ask for the help of your family and friends. Or better yet, see your doctor or set up a counseling appointment. You need to change your eating habbits in order to loose the weight. It won't be easy, especially at first, but if you stick to it and really change your lifestyle you'll be dropping weight in no time. Usually people healthfully loose 1-2lbs per week.

Managing and Litigating Depression Disability Claims Treatment Rehabilitation and Retraining

The prediction by the World Health Organization is that in less than twenty years, depression will be the second leading cause of disability in the world. In general, recognized symptoms of depression include, anhedonia "“ inability to experience pleasure or loss of capacity for pleasure, appetite disturbance with associated weight loss or gain, sleep disturbance (insomnia or oversleeping), psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, impaired concentration or indecisiveness, preoccupation with death or suicide. 1

A diagnosis of depression does not necessarily connote disability. For some, depression can be managed effectively with antidepressant medications and psychotherapy. For those who do not respond or respond only superficially to these treatment modalities, however, depression can be severely debilitating, affecting activities of daily living, social functioning and functioning in the workplace.

Disability carriers are increasingly being faced with claimants seeking disability benefits on the basis of mental illness. These types of claims pose their own unique challenges. The potentially subjective nature of the symptoms associated with mental illnesses such as depression can lead to disputes as to functional limitations and these types of disabilities are often approached with skepticism by insurers.

Disability insurance policies usually categorize disability into two subsets. "Own occupation" classifications, where the test applied is whether the insured is unable to perform his or her own occupation (the occupation in which he or she was engaged in at the time of commencement of disability) and "any occupation" classifications, where the scope is broadened and the insured must satisfy the insurer that he or she is disabled from performing any occupation. 2

Generally the "own occupation" test is time limited, often restricted to a two-year period. The "any occupation" test does not encompass any possible occupation but rather, has commonly been interpreted to mean an occupation for which an insured would be "reasonably suited" by means of his or her "training, education and experience".

The application of the "any occupation" test is subjective in that it is tailored to the individual's idiosyncratic "training, education and experience". As such, the determination, although a legal one, is largely based on the specific factual matrix including, the insured's education or lack thereof, age, work experience and medical condition . The interpretation of "total disability" by our courts has further circumscribed the "own occupation" and "any occupation" tests.

panic at the thought of doing a thing is a challenge to do it. By Henry S. Haskins Find out about Depression Diagnosis Code

An Acupuncture Article For Beginners

What is Acupuncture? Part of a 3000-year-old system of medicine developed in the Far East, this holistic treatment considers the whole person (as well as the symptoms) in order to establish and address the root of the illness, thus reducing the chances of the condition recurring.

How Does it Work? Qi is a fundamental concept in acupuncture. This vital energy is instrumental in motivating and determining our emotional and physical well being. When this energy becomes unbalanced, we may begin to develop 'disease'.

Qi flows through the body along pathways known as meridians and at certain points on each meridian the energy can be accessed and rebalanced.

Acupuncturists rebalance the body's energy by inserting needles into points chosen according to the patient and their condition. The body can begin to heal itself when its energy has been rebalanced.

Patients are actively encouraged by their acupuncturists to contribute to their own healing by dealing with lifestyle issues that may be having a detrimental effect on their health.

What Conditions can Benefit? Acupuncture effectively alleviates the symptoms of many conditions, including anxiety and stress-related illnesses; arthritis, rheumatism and joint pain; asthma; tinnitus, headaches, neuralgia and migraine; constipation, piles and irritable bowel syndrome (ibs); menstrual problems, morning sickness and post natal illness; frozen shoulder, sciatica and other back pains;

What is the Treatment Like? Almost half the treatment involves detailed questioning of the patient about their lifestyle and health issues. The patient's pulse will be taken and his tongue observed to aid the practitioner's assessment of his condition. Once a diagnosis has been reached, the relevant points are chosen and treatment begins.

What Does It Feel Like? Insertion of the needles is painless, but patients usually experience a sensation when the needle makes contact with the energy at the point. This can feel different for each patient, but may be a numbness, tingling or heaviness. Enduring for a few seconds, this preliminary sensation alerts the practitioner to the fact that the Qi has been influenced.

The usual duration for the needles to be left in position is about twenty minutes and most patients will become aware that they are calm and relaxed during this time. Immediately after treatment, especially the first time, it is common to feel quite tired.

This is usually followed over the next few days by the beginnings of change in the patient's condition as the energy starts to rebalance. Patients can also experience feelings of increased energy or general relaxation.

About Your Acupuncturist. Practitioners are required to be members of the British Acupuncture Council to ensure that insurance liabilities are covered and codes of practice, ethics and conduct followed.

Only sterile disposable needles are used and these are properly discarded after use.

How hard is it to get back into the Navy with and RE-4 code?

I was in basic training for a week yes only a week and I got kidney stones while I was there. When the military looked into my medical record they found that I had at one time been treated for PTSD, depression, and a sleeping disorder. Aparent miss diagnosis. When I mentioned this to my recruiter he said not to worry about it I wasnt currently being treated for it so it wouldnt matter. This recruiter is now involved in an investigation for second degree sexual assault and sexual battery. go figure. anyway the reason the military looked into my medical record was because of the stones and they disscharged me with a fraudulant inlistment because of the ptsd and depression how can i change this? I still want to be in the Navy.

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. By Anaïs Nin Diary1969 Find out about Postpartum Depression Diagnosis

Fish oil is still a popular health supplement

Benefits of fish oil

Most cold-water fish contain oil in their cavity net. This oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. These nutrients are typically used to manage inflammation of the body.

Types of fish that have high levels of omega-3 containing fish oil are trout, tuna, salmon, and sardines. However, consumption of these fish in a very large quantity can be harmful because of the high concentration of toxins from the body by a process known as biomagnification, as these fish are relatively higher in the food chain.

The oil industry Fish is the most profitable in Norway, Chile, Iceland and Peru, the latter being the largest in the company. Omega-3 fatty acids not only help to diagnose inflammation, but also to control cholesterol and improve body composition, because of the influence EPA and DHA on PPAR.

DHA is docosahexaenoic acid and EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid, which are both types of omega-3 essential widespread in fish oil.

Here we must remember that none of these Omega 3 compositions are produced by fish independently. Microalgae photosynthetic organic reactions and other autotrophs are original makers of EPA and DHA. The first is a precedent and a necessary condition for the formation of the latter. These three formations fatty acids Omega begins to change as they reach higher levels Tropic.

DHA Benefits include reduced risk of heart disease, maintaining adequate proportion of serotonin in the brain and the fight against manic depression.

Recent developments in research have sufficient evidence to assert that DHA plays a positive role in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, depression and postpartum coronary arteries, Cancer Prevention and benefits for nursing females.

Studies show that women who are pregnant need to supplement their daily diet with higher amounts of DHA. This increases the omega-3 fatty acids in breast milk, which in turn proves to be very beneficial for the baby.

EPA is apparently very important in the diagnosis of schizophrenia. It should be noted that diabetes inhibits the body's ability to EPA. These people should take other supplements EPA to maintain adequate levels of it.

For this reason, food supplements such as yogurt and milk containing DHA and EPA and other omega 3 fatty acids have been introduced on the market for consumption.

Fish oil is extracted from the fish's body and not by the liver (cod liver oil). The omega 3 and omega-6 are essentially kinds of essential fatty acids polyunsaturated. The human body needs adequate amounts of both. Omega 3 is generous in fish oil. Other sources of this type of fat acid include nuts, avocados, flax seeds, eggs and lactose rich food.

An important point to note here is that this is not the fish oil that is the diagnosis. However, the Omega 3 fatty acid. Fish oil is the most effective means of eat.

It is always advisable to consult your doctor before starting supplements of fish oil.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Fad Dieting And How It Can Lead To Depression

Fad diets why they are bad is because they can lead to medical and psychological problems. The psychiatric consequences can leave people searching for your depression cure. Most of us derive at least some self-esteem or self worth from our appearance. We know that the fad diets do not support the physiological needs of the body, but what does it do to our brain? Does fad dieting create depression? Does being overweight lead to depression? Fad dieting and depression have been linked in some studies.

The symptoms and length vary. They do all employ: down mood or melancholily, loss of interest in previously pleasurable things, overeating or not eating, sleeping to much or not at all, isolating oneself from others, lethargy (no get up and go), and a feeling of helplessness or hopelessness.

There is situational type depression where one event or serious of events seemed to trigger the symptoms. These usually include some kind of loss like someone close to you died, you lost your job, or your relationship has broken up. There are clinical types of depression like Major Depression and Dysthymia. These are diagnosed by professionals who follow a diagnostic manual. These diagnoses have to be specific to include the symptoms and length given in the manual. There is also Atypical Depression. The common symptoms of depression are present with this type. but it is also known to be reactive. This means that if something good happens the depression would lift for a time. This is absent in other forms of depression. Atypical depression is 40% of all depressions.

Recovery from clinical depression?

I have been diagnosed as clinically depressed in the last 2 years at age 25. The lack of focus and concentration that I feel as a result has caused me to leave several jobs, which has made me more depressed. Can intensive therapy and practicing mindfulness as well as other medical interventions restore me to somewhat normal functioning or is clinical depression something one just has to cope with?

You can recover from this but you have to be the one to decide that it is what you want. With the right meds and the right therapist things can get a lot better for you. If you find one that is not helpful then see someone else until you start to get it right. I am sorry you are going through this but it can be over come I know because I did it. I do not take anything now. It is a decision you have to make and be determined to make it out of it.

Mental Depression and How to Talk yourself Out of it

Some people call it the 'pits' and some people call it the 'blues' and some just call it 'feeling down in the dumps'. But whatever you may call it, being depressed is a terrible feeling.

The most common types of depression are:

Major Depression, which is characterized by a sad mood, sleep disorders, and a decreased or absent appetite. Often when a person is in a major depression, the person feels a complete lack of drive and motivation and the sufferer lacks the desire to do anything in life. Some people are completely disabled by depression, and some even consider suicide.

Dysthymia: This is a less severe type of long term depression that typically does not completely disable the individual. But it prevents the person from feeling motivated and functioning at optimum levels. Sometimes people who are suffering with Dysthymia also suffer from Major Depression, and when this occurs it is called double-depression.

Manic Depression is also called Bipolar Disorder. This type of depression is not as common as Dysthymia or major depression. It involves cycles of a manic state, alternated with a depressed state. This is often a long term recurring disorder. Sometimes the mood swings occur suddenly. But generally speaking, they tend to be gradual.

There are many variations of depression; the types described here are only three of the most common.

Some of the symptoms of depression include:

Sadness; anxiety; pessimism; insomnia and other sleep disorders; feelings of worthlessness; guilt; restlessness; pain; fatigue; weight loss; headaches; and thoughts of suicide.

Sources of Depression:

As previously stated, there are several types of depression: Major Depression; Manic Depression; and Dysthymia being three of the more common forms.

Many types of depression are hereditary. Living in a stressful environment can lead to depression. A traumatic experience such as a serious loss, relationship problems, or financial trouble can also lead to depression.

Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression as men are, but scientists do not know why.

If you suffer from depression, you will want to seek the advice of your physician. He may prescribe medication for you. But keep in mind that every medication has side effects.

Wouldn't it be phenomenal if you could regulate and eliminate your depression just by having certain thoughts? I know that this sounds too good to be true, but very often, various types of depression are caused by thinking negative thoughts.

Don't believe me? Then try it out! It's really quite basic and simple. Just imagine something that you feel is very troubling or sad. Go ahead, think about it right now! Then come back to this article.

Okay, so what happened? If you really focused and visualized the sad situation, you began to feel sad and a little depressed. And the longer you allow yourself to remain in that thought pattern, the sadder you will feel. As you stay in sad thoughts and keep feeling sadder, you lead yourself into a gradually intensifying depression.

The good news is that if you focus on a happy thought, then you will displace that sadness and depression and have happy feelings instead.

Listen closely now, because here are the keys to eliminating your depression: Our persistent thoughts spring forth from the unconscious mind. These are the thoughts that we find ourselves automatically thinking about during the day.

If the persistent thoughts that keep recurring in your mind are about your problems or sad experiences, then you raise your levels of anxiety, stress, and depression.

But here is the 'Light at the end of the tunnel': Since hypnosis can be used to alter our unconscious thoughts, nlp and self hypnosis stress management CDs will rapidly alter the way that you think, feel, and behave. The interesting thing is that the exact same techniques that work for stress management also work just as well for eliminating depression!

Now I'm going to tell you exactly how and why it is going to happen. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. Specifically, it is the Alpha state of consciousness. We go through the Alpha state as we are falling asleep at night. And we go through it again as we wake up in the morning. We also enter the Alpha state when we are daydreaming and imagining.

The unconscious mind is the seat of our emotions, and it is like a computer; the input controls the output! Hypnosis therapy is a wonderful tool for reaching directly into the unconscious mind and reprogramming it to automatically divert you away from negative thoughts, and promote positive thinking. It's a tool that allows you to bypass the consciousness to create positive expectations, which will in turn generate positive feelings. You can overcome depression by using hypnosis therapy.

Depression Disability?

I have suffered depression for 7 years, off (mild) and on (severe). Right now I am in a severe stage coupled with extreme anxiety and social phobias and OCD. I have a psychiatrist who said I am borderline schizo (not true). I have schizo meds which help w/ my OCD (fear of dying, choking).

I have a job. I am not going back to work because I can not do my job at this point. I have not quit, but an seriously thinking about it. I do need the insurance to see psychiatrist and meds.
I need the money too for bills, but at this point, I can't go back to work. It has been 2 months on Short term disability from work.

Should I quit my job and try for Soc Sec Disability or keep my job and stay on short term? I need to find a new doctor and find better meds/way of coping. What do I tell my job? What do I do?

All I know is not quit your job. Going to work helps you stand on your feet and life will have purpose. Staying at home means that there will be no difference between day or night, summer or winter,... Hang on to your job. If you need to explain it to your supervisor, you can ask your doctor to write a letter and hand it to your supervisor while you explain your problem the way that he/she can understand it and have sympathy (I am not talking about feeling sorry) to know how keeping this job is important for your health and at the same time knows that there are times that you need to get off.
Good luck

Major Depression Disability Quotes:

For peace of mind resign as general manager of the universe. By Author Unknown Find out about Major Depression Disability

Depression And Exercise - Why You Must Find Time To Exercise If You Are Depressed

Major depression or clinical depression (also known as Major Depressive Disorder or MDD) is a serious medical illness affecting 15 million American adults, or approximately 5 to 8 percent of the adult population. Unlike the unusually normal emotional experiences of transient mood states, major depression is persistent and can significantly interfere with a person's day to day existence. Behavior, thoughts, physical wellness, moods, and activity levels may all be affected in varying degrees and the resulting disabilities can be very discouraging, especially for people who are generally happy and active.

For me, depression seemed to appear out of nowhere, and with a vengeance. Even though I thought I was coping well in response to some extremely challenging life-lessons, my body and mind rebelled. And as many people are prone to do, I, too, stopped taking time for myself, especially to exercise, when those circumstances began to escalate.

I soon found myself feeling as if I would collapse at any given moment.  People around me couldn't understand why I wasn't handling things in my usual Super Woman way, or why I would break into tears for no apparent reason. Even though I wasn't eating much, my weight was going up and I was sporting bluish-black bags under both my eyes most of the time from lack of sleep. There were literally weeks on end when I could not sleep through an entire night, which, among other things, left me exhausted, unhappy, and achy most of the time. In short, I felt like the world was crashing in on me.

A beloved mentor, who was also a doctor prior to her recent passing, finally cornered me and said, "It's exercise or some pretty potent drugs. You choose." The last thing I felt like I wanted to do was exercise; my aversion to Big Pharma, however, won out.

Fortunately, research has indicated that exercise may match drug therapy for treating major depression.  For those of us who prefer not to take medications and are doing our best to remove as many toxins from our lives as possible, this is very good news.

There are numerous reasons to exercise if you are depressed. For me, exercise literally put my life back on course again.

Just a few of the exercise-related changes you, too, may experience:

1.      Increased sense of well being

2.      Increased overall energy levels

3.      Increased oxygenation and blood flow to the body and brain

4.      Natural tension and stress relief

5.      Sense of accomplishment, more self confidence, feeling like you are taking an active role in recovery

6.      Fewer episodes of sleeplessness

7.      Better stabilization of blood sugar

8.      Weight management

9.      Physical strengthening and increased resistance to mood swings

10.   Sense of community with others, self, or nature

If you're feeling like you may be depressed, visit www.ManageClinicalDepression.com for a free online screening and talk to your doctor or holistic health practitioner about your concerns.  And if you've been sidelined by depression, please begin any new exercise program slowly. Just walking a block or two each day is a great start. Persistence is the key. Any regular exercise effort will make a tremendous difference in the way you feel, especially if you've been sedentary or bedridden from depression.

I am unable to work due to Major Depression, what should I do?

I feel guilty sometimes because I can't work to help my family, even so I am a full-time student with excellent motivation I got only A's in my psychology classes this semester, I am a psychology genious, Ohohoho.

I have never worked, I lack energy due to my illness, I feel bad because my family can't afford medical insurance and they have to pay my expenses, A medication that I am taking costs one hundred dollars plus another medication and the Psychatrist's visit. Is difficult to get Disability now. What should I do? I am twenty one and male.

I have major depression and I am on Social Security Disability since I can't work full-time. I could never be a full-time student (due to the chronic fatigue), but I do work part-time.

I have to admit I find your dilemma perplexing. On the one hand, you write "I am a full-time student with excellent motivation." But on the other hand, you say you lack the energy to work due to your illness.

First, I suggest you talk things over with a school counselor, social worker, or a therapist at a clinic with a sliding fee scale. Any of these might provide options and help with your major depression. A social worker, in particular, can offer advice regarding Disability. Since you have not worked, you would not be eligible for Social Security Disability, with depends on how much you have paid into Social Security. However, you might qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Go to the following site for more info: http://www.ssa.gov/ssi/

You wrote that you feel guilty because you are a financial burden for your family. If you have the motivation to be a full-time student, you should be able to work at least part-time---if not now, then during the summers and when you get out of school.

Perhaps you can redirect your academic motivation to career motivation. A major source of that motivation would be to help your family. They made financial sacrifices to help you pay your expenses, get medication, and see a psychiatrist. Your motivation would be to reimburse them for their sacrifices. Even if you don't like your first job (few people do), you can view it as a stepping stone to help your family and perhaps get training to pursue a career in psychology.
