Biological Factors That Contribute to Depression

Many people are pre-disposed to depression because of their own biological makeup making their risk of suffering from this condition much greater then those who do not share these risk factors. There are four main biological factors that can increase a persons risk for depression and these include (1) genetic factors, (2) biochemical factors, (3) alterations in hormonal regulation and, (4) sleep abnormalities.

Genetic Factors

Studies done with twins have shown that genetic factors play a role in the development of depressive disorders. There have been a number of studies done that show that the average rate of shared mood disorders among identical twins is 45% to 60%. This means if one twin suffers from depression, or any other mood disorder, there is a 45% to 60% chance that the other twin will also be affected. Contrast this with fraternal twins where the percentage falls of drastically to only 12%.

Moods disorders are inheritable for some people. This also means that those who are genetically susceptible to mood disorders can have an earlier age of onset, a greater rate of suffering other disorders in addition to depression and an increased risk of recurrent illnesses. However, any genetic factors that are present must interact with environmental factors for depression to develop.

Biochemical Factors

The brain contains billions of neurons and is a highly complex organ. There is a lot of evidence that points to the idea that depression is a biological or chemical disorder where central nervous system neurotransmitter abnormalities are a probable cause of clinical depression. These neurotransmitter abnormalities may be the result of inherited or environmental factors, or even of other medical conditions, such as cerebral infarction, hypothyroidism, AIDS, or substance abuse.

Specific neurotransmitters in the brain are believed to be related to mood altered states. It was initially believed that the two main neurotransmitters involved were serotonin and norepinephrine. With new research though it is now thought that depression results from the dysregulation of a number of neurotransmitter systems in addition to serotonin and norepinephrine. The dopamine, acetylcholine, and GABA systems are also believed to be involved in the pathophysiology of major depression.

Alterations in Hormonal Regulation

Although there is still inconclusive evidence that hormones can play a role in depression. The most studied neuroendocrine characteristic that relates to depression has been hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. Evidence of increased cortisol secretion is apparent in 20% to 40% of depressed outpatients and 40% to 60% of depressed inpatients. Results of a dexamethasone suppression test are abnormal in about 50% of patients with depression, which indicates hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. However, the findings of this test may also be abnormal in people with obsessive-compulsive disorders and other medical conditions. Significantly, patients with psychotic major depression are among those with the highest rates of nonsuppression of cortisol on the dexamethasone suppression test.

Sleep Abnormalities

Sleep electroencephalogram abnormalities may be evident in 40% to 60% of outpatients and up to 90% of inpatients during a major depressive episode. People prone to depression tend to have a pre-mature loss of sleep, slow delta wave sleep and altered rapid eye movement (REM) latency. The phase of REM sleep associated with dreaming occurs earlier in two thirds of people with bipolar and major depressive illnesses. This sign is referred to as reduced REM latency and is consistent with the expected manifestation of an inherited trait. Reduced REM latency and deficits in slow-wave sleep typical persist following recovery from a depressed episode. Data also suggests that depressed patients without this sign are not likely to respond to treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, which suppress early REM sleep.

There are many factors that contribute to depression, many of which are biochemical in nature. Those that are biologically induced can be treated with different prescription drugs but as with anything relating to human emotion and chemical makeup answering one question as to why brings up more questions that remain unanswered.

What is wrong? Is it depression?

ok, background info. Im 14, a girl, and im not aware of any genetic disorders that run in my family.

Whats been happening is that i find it hard to talk to my friends if they do anything to change. like one girl started wearing makeup and she has always made fun of me for wearing like only a little bit of eyeliner. but then she turns around and does the exact opposite. another friend is supposed to go to a program that would require her to go to high school at the college. she wanted me to go, and i said id consider, but i changed my mind when i considered all the things i would miss. she got mad and stopped talking to me. then she decided to bring my religion and everything into the fight. i could deal with the makeup thing, but this really messed me up. i feel achy and tired al the time and im usually very hyper and upbeat. i also feel like the world has turned its back on me.

Is there any hope for me?

BTW im already on Lexipro (spell?) for sleep

I promise you that most teenagers go through exactly this. There are always ups and downs and drama like this during highschool, there's always someone being hypocritical or bitchy, and you just need to weather it. Everyone experiences the feeling that the world's against them at some stage, but there is absolutely and without-a-doubt hope. These things will pass, if now soon then in a few years, when your friends are older and more mature. There will always be people around like this, but they're always larger in number and more intense during your school years.

Learn to rise above it. If people want to be petty and hypocritical and make themselves unhappy, then let them. Don't let yourself get dragged down into it, or you'll end up unhappy too. Pride yourself on being the mature one with better things to do than worry about minor issues like this.

Find someone you can talk to about this, vent about it to your parents, or write it down in a journal, get it out of your system.

What are Genetically Modified Foods?

Should patents on plants, animals and humans, as well as patents on their genes be allowed? Our ability to alter the genetic blueprint of animals and plants is in the process of changing many aspects of science and medicine. Many people see this as beneficial others see this as tampering with nature.

But what about genetically-modified (GM) food? Do we want to eat such food? And is it really such a big deal?

Genetic engineering enables scientists to create plants, animals and micro-organisms by manipulating genes in a way that does not occur naturally.

A recent GM Nation report concluded that the general public is overwhelmingly against GM technology, with feelings ranging from suspicion and skepticism, to hostility and rejection; there are, it was said, many more people who are cautious, suspicious or out rightly hostile about GM crops than there are supportive towards them.

Anxiety in society over genetically modified food is understandable, fuelled by a variety of causes - consumer unfamiliarity; lack of reliable information on the current safeguards in place; a steady stream of negative opinion in the media; opposition by activist groups; growing mistrust of industry; and a general lack of awareness of how our food is produced. The scientific community has not adequately addressed public concerns about GM foods, nor has it effectively communicated the value of the new technology.

The Royal Society, the UKs premier scientific body has pointed out the total lack of evidence that genetically modified crops cause harm to humans. But youd never have guessed that from the often negative media coverage.

When considering genetic engineering, it should be remembered that almost every living thing that man exploits has been genetically-modified in some way. The crops we use for food, the animals we eat, our pets and the plants in our gardens are radically different from those that existed in the so-called natural state.

Thousands of years of selective breeding have improved the yields of crops, the milk production of cows, the quantity of meat on cattle and the sizes and colours of our flowers and dogs.

But because of commercial interests, the public is being denied the right to know about GE ingredients in the food chain, and therefore losing the right to avoid them despite the presence of labelling laws in certain countries. GMOs should not be released into the environment as there is not adequate scientific understanding of their impact on the environment and human health. Genetic pollution could be a major threat because GMOs cannot be recalled once released into the environment. Labelling of all products with GE ingredients doesnt appear to be happening at the moment which is important for those people that want to avoid them.

Now my final thoughts… few would deny the benefits of modern genetic engineering in medicine. The use of genetically-modified bacteria to produce drugs such as insulin has been a revolution in medicine and saved the lives of millions. GM crops have also been hailed as the saviors of developing countries as they can be modified to prosper in dry, arid countries where there is little rainfall. There seems to be both negatives and positives to GE and GM foods….ill let you decide which path you choose!

If I am 5'11" and 135 pounds. why do I do I feel fat and insecure?

I have always had a weight complex. I had twin boys 21/2 years ago. I lost all my weight and more. I was 120 and skin and bones and wore a size 3. Now I were a size 7. I think my weight is fine but when I look in the mirror I still have this fat perception. I am 28yrs. old and married with children. I also suffer from depression and anxiety disoders. It just seems so childish but I cant overcome the whole weight thing. I have always had this obsession with "being too skinny." I think my weight is just not distributed correctly. Thanks to genetics.

It seems that in most cases of anxiety illness it effects women more than men and they are at greater risk of anxiety than men. No one knows exactly why this is but this area is so complex and there are genetic, psychological and emotional factors involved which are all important in the individuals risk of developing an anxiety problem or related problem.

 Some of these factors make anxiety more likely whereas some lessen the risk and therefore it is very difficult to predict exactly who will develop a problem.

 Also it depends where you live effects the risk too, as the rates of anxiety related issues are different throughout the world and dependant on cultural differences too. It is not just an issue for one country over another it is a worldwide issue

Some research has indicated that in some East Asian countries there are low rates of anxiety disorders where as in New Zealand there are high rates. Also within the countries themselves there are differences within the groups that make up the population. For example in the USA the African Americans have high rates of anxiety disorders, no one can explain why this is so or why rates are higher in certain groups or certain areas, however it has been shown that an important factor is how different groups see the world and how they support each other as well as how they set up their societies.

 It is quite logical to assume that in areas of dense population and high crime rate such as an inner city area, that anxiety is likely to be more of an issue rather than if you lived in a small rural area where crime is not an issue and everyone knows each other where anxiety problems then would be seen to be at a minimum. In the UK for example you are 50% more likely to have an anxiety problem if you live in a city compared to living in the countryside.

There is also evidence to suggest that genetic factors play a part in anxiety disorders and your genes are important in the development of anxiety. This is more likely if you have a history in your family of anxiety or related illnesses. You are more likely to suffer from the same illness if this is the case. This is not absolutely set in stone that you will inherit this disorder but are just more likely to.

 There are also social factors that are important too as anxiety disorders are a lot more common when you have life changing events for example exams, a death in the family or perhaps after a life threatening incident as in the case of post-traumatic-stress-disorder. It is very important to have the proper support and counselling at these times in order to decrease the possibility of developing anxiety related illness.

 For the predictable events such as examinations or starting a new job perhaps, the preparation is important in order to decrease the stress levels before the event happening and therefore lessen the chances of an anxiety illness occurring.

depression and having children?

I have a history of severe depression and an anxiety disorder. I still struggle and am on anti-depressants. I'm only 21 so don't want children yet. But I definatly do one day, in fact I can't think of anything I want more. But I'm worried that if I ever did have a baby, I would be being selfish. The genetic factors in mental health, coupled with whether I'd have to stay on anti-depressants through pregnancy and the high risk of post partum depression. It all seems impossible right now and I'm devastated.

Anyone have any advice or opinions for me? Or anyone who suffers with depression and has had children, I'd love to hear your experiences. Thanks in advance

A friend of mine did this successfully and took anti-depressants while pregnant. She now has two very well adjusted kids who are doing great. It can work. Give yourself some time and try not to add this to your worrying. It's a big decision but not one you need to make today! Just know it can happen and turn out just fine. It's not impossible at all :-)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. The repetitive, distressing thoughts or images that become the obsessions for sufferers cause a tremendous amount of anxiety that can only be placated by the ritualistic compulsions that temporarily work to soothe the anxious mind and stop the obsessive thoughts.

However, the compulsions are only a temporary fix and need to be repeated every time the thoughts crop up. Moreover, some people become so obsessive about stopping or preventing the obsessive thoughts and images that they perform their rituals almost constantly to prevent the occurrence of the unwanted thoughts.

For the sufferers, the obsessive, compulsive cycle feeds on itself, creating an endless cycle of obsessions, fears and compulsive activities. It can be extremely draining, both physically and mentally and can take up hours of each day, severely interfering with work and personal relationships.

There are a number of biological and environmental factors that can contribute to or cause obsessive compulsive disorder.

There is a possible link between low levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps the nerve cells in your body to communicate, and OCD. This is why prescription drugs that can deal with this imbalance are often at least partially helpful in resolving some of the effects of the disorder.

Low levels of serotonin may be a genetic trait passed on from parents to children so the tendency to develop OCD may be an inherited risk. There is also a link between the development of obsessive compulsive disorder in children and an untreated infection caused by streptococcus bacteria.

While biological factors can certainly play a role, environmental factors may cause the development of symptoms or pre-existing symptoms or tendencies to worsen.

OCD sufferers are compelled to perform rituals continuously to ease the anxious thoughts or obsessions that plague their minds. Washing their hands so many times that they become raw, cleaning household surfaces 5-6 hours a day, checking doors, windows, locks, and appliances non-stop, counting items obsessively, these are some of the compulsions that sufferers must contend with everyday.

While many compulsions are seemingly harmless on the surface, the compulsions are in response to obsessive and unwanted thoughts that need to be dealt with and the compulsions themselves can often be extremely detrimental to living a normal life.

Frustration and depression are the most common emotions associated with OCD after anxiousness and nervousness. That´s because the sufferers know their obsessions and compulsions are exaggerated, unwarranted and unnecessary but they can´t do anything about it. They are trapped in a cycle they know is unnecessary and can´t escape.

The drive to perform these ritualistic behaviors can become all encompassing and take over a sufferer´s life. Often the thoughts that invade your mind make no sense and are quite disturbing or scary. Obsessing about your own death or the death of a family member is upsetting.

You try to ignore these thoughts, you try to drive them away but they keep coming back. The obsessive compulsive disorder sufferers, like most anxiety sufferers, fear being labeled crazy or weird.

You are definitely not crazy and while you may be weird, it´s not because of your OCD. It is a more common problem than you may think; there are millions of people trying to cope with this problem right now. Chances are someone else you know is struggling with this problem as well.

OCD sufferers go to great lengths to hide their condition because they are embarrassed and worried about being humiliated in front of their family, friends and co-workers.

Why adult onset anxiety and depression in my family?

My mother family, THE ENTIRE side, follows a specific pattern. We were all highly creative, artistic, excellened in music, sports, work etc. We all were on top of our game and then.........the mental illness sets in and sets in hard between ages 25 and 30 for us all. I'm talking 6 cousins, 4 aunts, 3 uncles, my 3 brothers, my mother, my grandmother. We ALL have followed this pattern?

For me it was like I was on top of the entire world, nothing could stop me, then suddenly at age 27 out of no where I developed a panis disorder, 24/7 anxiety, servere depression, etc. The patten is the same for all those above. End results, everything from non-fuctional house and bed ridden to social anxieties.

Obviously there is a genetic link of some sort. But I'm curious why we all lead such highly productive normal lives until 25-30? Anyone else have this experience in their family?

To some degree you are on the right track. You have inherited it. Also, certain mental gliches dont come out til certain age ranges. Early twenties to 30's is about the range for most things to peak. Other then Add. Which is usually prevalant in children first. My best advice to you and all of your family is educate yourself about it. Not just by asking Dr's ... go get the books, research it on line. Teach yourself everything you can find out about it. Its the only real way to break the cycle. And when and if you have children, or if you do already. Pay close attention to them, try to learn the signs and teach them preventive behavioral techniques. If you dont... your great... great... great... grandchildren will end up going through what you are. Please dont give up though. It does get better. This I can promise you.

The world we currently live in is a social one. Communications advance to promote better socialization between people. It is possible that it may be just a passing phase, or a normal response to high pressure situations. Where it has been going on for awhile however, other things may need to be done. Avoiding social contact and activities can make the condition worse.

 

Although the comfort zone is relatively small, try to expand it slowly. Attend a low key social event with some family and look around and see how everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves. Be a little more active, one step at a time and simply greet people you may not have met. There does not need to be a conversation yet, although some may try and you may be surprised to find there are things in common you can talk about a little more openly.

 

By taking small steps gradually to expand this comfort zone, it will help to reduce the fears associated with Social Anxiety Disorder, gradually reverse the process over time and help manage social actions better as a result of more experience with them.

looking for good things about myself?

I'm obese, ugly as hell, antisocial (actually social anxiety disorder, but close enough), and worthless except for my intelligence.

The only thing I have is my academics. I'm not trying to be cocky, but I'm a genius. I skipped 2 grades and I'm at one of the countries most prestigious colleges and working about half as hard as everybody else and getting the same grades. I was published as lead author in a genetics journal at age 15, and found a new gene when I was 14.

Sometimes I can think about my academic accomplishments as a way to see myself as worth something, but there's only so much that that can do. I have virtually no friends, I've tried to kill myself once (it was an epic failure), and I just want some other reason that I might be worth something when I don't get any value of thinking about my academic accomplishments.

You seem to be a very interesting person. I find it hard to believe that all those accomplishments would have caused you to withdraw from society and be that person that you are. If anything, it should help you find some social interaction, at least within the circle of academic professionals who share the same ideas and goals as you.

You may have a problem with your physical appearance, and that's what the internet is so good with hiding. In the internet, nobody cares how you look -- just how you think, how you write, and how you interact in words. If you steer clear of youtube and facebook, you shouldn't worry about appearances.

Interact through interesting online forums/chatrooms. Find friends this way -- or if you are scared of socializing -- find people to share ideas with. Forums are a great way to interact and debate, forming acquaintances before you know it.

I'd kill for your brains. I wish I was that smart. Instead, all I have are my artsy hands and my flair for failure. I am not good at math - and i've failed a board exam twice. I should be killing myself .. but I'm still good for something I think. :p As long as I'm helping other people, I am still worth something. Maybe you can try something along the lines of that. My mom and I started a Christmas tradition of going to hospitals and giving presents/cards to needy patients who have to stay there for Christmas. It made me feel stupid for all those times I've felt bad about my life-- here are people who are ill, needy and without nobody to care for them but are still struggling to stay alive. It's inspiring, and it makes me want to do better things than to sit and mope at how retarded I am. :)

my mom has really bad anxiety issues and she thinks i do too, which i might. but i dont know and i really dont want to because its not very masculine to have anxiety atacks. isnt this more of a female thing?

i dont really know if its a female thing because women do tend to get more nervous. I personally every guy i know is very confident, i would never mind a guy with anxiety attacks, i would really respect them. I guess a lot of women do have anxiety issues but guys may have them too and probably not even show it!

The Causes Of Anxiety attacks

For different people there are different causes for anxiety attacks. It is important that we identify these causes so that we can battle them away.

Most often people get anxiety attacks for reasons they do not know. They suddenly begin to feel agitated and nervous. At the same time they lose concentration in whatever it is they were doing, and the cause as to why they have these feelings, seems to be unidentifiable.

One of the most popular causes reported by many anxiety patients, is that a prolonged working pattern, and especially with computers later on leads to anxiety disorders. To combat this, the regular work pattern must be broken. This is the exact reason why regular breaks are made compulsory, for those who have to work such repetitive tasks.

Another possible cause for anxiety is losing our body control. When with company, the mere thought of losing control and the embarrassment that would follow by having an anxiety attack, triggers anxiety. This nervousness will slowly build up and will eventually grow to become an anxiety attack, and the reality of the attack will lead to a further magnification of the situation. Avoiding such thoughts can be difficult, one of the easiest things to do is to make yourself occupied and busy, this can hopefully make you forget.

Trauma from a past life can also be a cause for anxiety attacks. There are many cases where victims of anxiety usually have a history which leads them to this disorder. For example, a break up in the family of a growing child can have a lasting damaging effect on the child's life later on. In the future this traumatic even would eventually develop into anxiety and depression in the person's life.

If you look at the way many anxiety patients behave and observe them even closer as well as the behavioral patterns of their parents, then you would notice many similarities. Ninety percent of all cases usually come from a parent that suffers from anxiety disorder. This has led to the wide belief that anxiety may run in family genes, even though many agree that the family environment, a person grows up in plays the bigger role in this cause.

These are some of the many causes for anxiety disorders. Every person is unique so in order to deal with anxiety, it is best advised that you seek help from a medical professional. In this way they can help you identify the underlying cause of your anxiety and give you sound advice on dealing with it in the future.

Anxiety attacks - Can You Inherit An Anxiety Disorder?

There are many factors that contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. All of them play a role in creating the necessary conditions for panic attacks, panic disorder and other phobias and anxiety to play an overwhelming role in your life.

One important factor might be the inherited, long term or sustained risk that predisposes you to panic and anxiety.

Inherited risk factors such as biological causes, childhood circumstances and accumulated stress are the long term problems that set the stage for potential panic and anxiety problems. In order for these long term factors to come into play, they usually need to be triggered or activated by short-term problems.

These triggers can include excessive stress, trauma or conditioning. Once panic attacks or anxiety have entered your life, they only stay in your life because you are maintaining the causes that are fueling them.

Your maintenance of panic and anxiety include nervous or agitated self talk, excessive worries, and avoidance of fearful situations.

In people who have panic disorder or some of the other anxiety conditions, the alarm system is triggered even though there is no danger and many scientists don´t know why this happens.

Panic disorder does seem to run in families, which may mean there is a strong biological component but many people with no family history develop panic disorder which suggests that biology is not the only factor at play.

There is a lot of controversy about whether panic disorders, phobias and anxiety can be inherited. Research has not uncovered a magic gene that controls anxiety or clear evidence that your parents are to blame for you condition.

That would be a convenient source of blame but it´s not the silver bullet. However, studies using twins show an increased likelihood that one twin will have panic disorders if the other does. These studies seem to support that at least some of the responsibility falls to your genetic design.

What many researchers and experts on this subject believe is inherited, is a personality type. If the personality type you inherit is predisposed to be anxious, volatile, excitable and reactive you are more likely to develop an anxiety disorder.

However, the manifestations of that reactive personality depend on the stresses you are exposed to in childhood, adolescence and beyond.

You may never had the opportunity to develop full blown panic disorder or agoraphobia because you were raised in a nurturing environment and were surrounded by supportive people. It´s the old nature and nurture argument.

Since nurture plays a role, here are some contributing factors that might predispose you to panic attacks or anxiety disorders. If your parents were overprotective this may lead to an excessive worry and concern for your own safety.

The fearful attitude of your parents about catching a cold, crossing the street, not climbing too high etc. etc. will cause and reinforce a reluctant, fearful view of the world is a dangerous place. If your parents were high achievers and expected the same from you it could have had a detrimental impact.

The high standards and the strive for perfection may have made you a perfectionist and too self-critical. These traits can lead to anxiety disorders because perfection is impossible to achieve and a lifetime of coming up short can certainly fuel a doubtful, anxious personality

Growing up in an insecure environment, either physically or emotionally can lead to anxiety conditions. Aside from the more obvious physical, sexual or emotional abuse, experiences such as divorce, death, or an alcoholic or addicted family member can lead to excessive clinginess and lack of confidence later on in life.

Regardless the reasons for anxiety problems, they can be dealt with and while it may not solve the underlying issue that caused or triggered your panic attacks or other anxiety, it can stop the panic attacks in their tracks and that's the first step to regaining your life.

because of family genes I suffer from anxiety, you know fear, and nervousness how do I control this or what are some ways to reduce it?

When having an anxiety attack, take deep breaths, drink water.

Then try to imagine either

A) someone (a good buddy, a loved one or your pet who loves and supports you) or
B) something (favourite treat, awards you won, a meaningful gift someone gave you) or
C) an event (you accomplished something you were proud of, played a great game, a great day when everything went so well, enjoyed a vacation)

that made you feel super confident. Also, just having lucky charm you can stroke at can be used as a reminder.

Anything that will instantly bring feelings that can turn your focus off your forget your anxiety will be give you a great relief.

You have to be able to really picture and feel these positive things in your mind for it to work.

I noticed for myself that one time when i was really anxious and then all of a suddenly saw i a friend, i instantly relaxed but i didn't expect that. Of course, you can't always expect your friends to always be there to support you whereever you go but you try to think about good things and good people and that will help you get through the moment.
