Manic Depression and Genetics
Research into manic depression, more formally called bipolar disorder, has been hindered, according to many in the scientific community due to the lack of animal models upon which to base studies.
Until now that is. Scientists have been able to create a genetically engineered defect in a specific gene which may play a leading role in causing mood disorders, like manic depression. The gene is known as glutamate receptor 6 – referred to as GluR6 – and has long been associated with manic depression.
Scientists knew that the gene was related to manic depression but were unsure of the exact mechanism. Not only that, but the gene encoding for the GluR6 receptor has not only been linked to manic depression, but also to the tendency of some individuals to consider suicide while taking antidepressant drugs in a separate pharmacogenetic study.
Interestingly enough, individuals who suffer with manic depression are the most susceptible to antidepressant-induced states of restlessness.
In the new study, scientists utilized mice to further examine the issue. The scientists used mice with the GluR6 gene missing, comparing them to a control group of mice who had the gene.
Both groups of mice underwent a series of tests specifically created to imitate the symptoms of manic episode of manic depression. The researchers discovered that the mice with the Glu6R gene missing displayed many of the symptoms of mania.
Not only were these mice more active in several tests, they also displayed more anxiety and more behavior traits that could be classified as risk taking and less behavior traits that could be called despair-type behavior. These mice without the GluR6 also displayed more aggressive behavior, another character trait of a manic episode of manic depression.
The scientists also administered biochemical tests on these mice, the results of which suggested that the GluR6 gene may also play a unique role in actually regulating some of the symptoms of mania.
Now that researchers have genetically engineered this type of laboratory mouse, they’ll be better able to study manic depression. This study also opens the door for further studies that may very well lead to new treatments.

Treatment varies based on the severity of the condition. Daily medication and constant monitoring of the child is required but in more severe cases, children may be required to wear external devices to deliver medicine.

I suffered from the very same thing. I was taking Zoloft for a while but did not like how it made me feel. My doctor perscribed Prozac been taking it for a little over a year and I feel great.

Hi..How long have you been taking the Zyprexa and the Prozac? I'm not on Prozac but I do take Zyprexa at night as well as Klonopin 3 times a day as needed for Bipolar. When I first started on the Zyprexa it would knock me out. Mornings were really hard for me also. I have been taking it for 1 1/2 years now and my body has adjusted to the side effects. It still makes me a little sleepy at night unless I'm already real tired then it makes me just fall out. Prozac can make you drowsy also until your body adjusts to it. My best advice is to just hang in there and give your body time to adjust to the medicine. If after 6 weeks to 8 weeks the side effects haven't lightened up any then I would suggest talking with your doctor about it.

depression and zoloft?
I just wanted to ask.. i just *just* started taking zoloft 25mg (took my first tablet about 2 hours ago).. and iam feeling extremely drowsy and extremely depressed.. is it because of zoloft or just my depression hitting me? when the hell will my depression go away?
I would prefer answers from people who have had experience with anti-depressants.

In palliative care do they help with depression, fatigue, and weakness, medication wise?
And most importantly, with therapy, or massages, or any natural ways to relieve these?
Usually when someone is in palliative care, they are getting doses of pain meds and some form of anti anxiety medication, such as ativan. It depends on how close they are to dying. This is just my experience from my best friends mom dying in January from cancer, and my friend who was a palliative care nurse. Usually they are too weak for therapy, massages and such.

I have GAD, mild PTSD, dp and so on. I am on meds.
My fears are mostly what if I do something bad AND GET IN TROUBLE. For example. On one forum some member asked what medications should he take for his depression. I told him celexa worked for me. Then I remembered some can get siuicidal from antidepressants. I worried so much what if this person takes celexa and becomes suicidal.
Or, I offered some guy help in writing a book. Later I learned he planned to lie in that book. I refused to help because he might write something crazy and I may be blamed if anything goes wrong.
I have bunch of irrational fears. I realize they are irrational but when the fear is overwhelming I do everything to avoid it and seek reassurance.
What causes them? Could it be my Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Sounds more like paranoia to me. They have medication for paranoia. I am very paranoid, however when it kicks in I am able to identify what is going on and I disregard it. Maybe you have not yet reached that level or are unable to do so. For example, when someone walks by me have laughs to the person next to them, I immediatly think it is about me. However, I remind myself of my nature and the way I am and dont let it bother me. This takes time as when you first do it, it is very uncomfortable. However its like riding a bike, the more you do it the better you feel about it. Then, you when you see the results of ingoring your paranoia you sometimes laugh because Alot of good came from it. DO keep in mind there is healthy paranoia and unhealthy paranoia. SOmeone obviously following you down a dark street would certainly give me reason to think something is amiss. A little old lady walking her dog down the street a night who seems to be catching on me, is nothing to worry about most likely. Rationalize your fears. Its how I defeat them. I ask why does this bother me, I identify what it is that bothers me abd come to the conclusion I am being silly. Do keep in mind though, again, that you need to have some paranoia because we do not live in a perfect world.
