panic at the thought of doing a thing is a challenge to do it. By Henry S. Haskins Find out about Depression Drugs Children
Is your Child Depressed? Watch Out as the Risks are Increasing!
Depression is a mental disorder that is today common even among the children. More often than not mental disorders are caused in the grown ups. But the situation is quite different nowadays. It is really a worrying prospect that our future generations are also not free from the curse of depression. It is indeed sad to know that even the children go through a number of mental complications nowadays. They also face mental dilemmas and problems. They are also vulnerable to a number of anti social elements that confuse and perplex them mentally. It becomes really difficult for them to understand what is bad and good. The saddest part is that most of the cases of children remain untreated for a long period of time. The parents also fail to take into account that their young ones are suffering one of the most killing mental disorders.
It is not that the symptoms of depression are not noticeable in the children. They show certain symptoms that are not uncommon but at the same time they are not normal also. Normally the parents think that it is quite natural for the children to show symptoms like sulking, refusal to answer to unknown people, refusal to go to school, feigning sickness etc. These symptoms are common but what is unique is that they have also been discovered as the most common symptoms of depression. The guardians, when their wards show these symptoms, concentrate on curing the symptoms and not the inherent cause. The parents also cannot be blamed. After all there are no parents who would want their children to ail in an ailment. Children undergoing depression never show a complete development in these symptoms. In short the symptoms do not cease. Because the symptoms are just the effects. The cause still exists quite strongly in the psyche of the depressed child. And if the symptoms are ignored for a long time as quite normal and mundane you might also run the risk of leading your child wayward. If the seeds of depression are allowed to remain in the child for long, the child might also get caught in the anti social elements as I mentioned earlier and might grow into juvenile delinquents.
Therefore, these kinds of symptoms on the part of the children should not be overlooked. Immediate help should be taken from the doctors to determine if the symptoms are the result of depression and complete subsequent medication should be carried out. There are ways of depressioncure in children. However, they cannot be exactly administered depression drugs just like that. Let us take for example the case of Xanax online. Depression drug Xanax is quite successful in the adults but it cannot be given to the children without medical consultation. Even while administrating to the adults Xanax prescription should be attained first. The condition is also applied to those who buy Xanax online. Just because depression should not be neglected in the children, does not mean that you give them depression pills on your own. This kind of unwarranted action might put your child's life at stake.

what does everyone think of the supreme court's decision on child rape?
I think it SHOULD be elligible for the death penalty. To do something so evil and twisted to a child is the worst thing you could do in your life. You are killing part of them, which few ever recover from. A lifelong battle with depression, drugs, and/or alcohol will ensue, i am sure. I think any crime against the innocense of a child should have serious death penalty ramlifications. At least life in prison should be the penalty for such a crime.
I don't agree w/ the decision either. If you are not put to death you should have your yaya's cut off.

Depression in College Students
Introduction:
Human nature varies throughout the world. How an individual perceive and understand situation rely on diverse issues encompassing personal, social, economical or environmental. Childhood grooming demands positive, encouraging and congenial family and social atmosphere. This not only motivates and inculcates confidence but also provides ability to grasp and tackle stress and related issues intelligently.
In this competitive epoch and demanding life, stress cannot be evaded. We do not come across tough situations every day, it happens occasionally when situation turn out to be beyond our control. The situation becomes tough when major transitions are taking place in particular, when a student joins college, a shift from a nurturing family and home security to outer world.
Chemical imbalance, genetics, a history of abuse, family problems, death of loved one, any trauma in the past, pressures related with the academic performance, cut-throat competition, several adjustments in a new environment, a fear of failure in the chosen field, psycho-social, financial pressures generated due to escalating cost of education and books and to meet the domestic needs on a limited budget, lack of financial literacy, sexual assault, alcohol or drug abuse, poor diet and exercise habits, relationships, both friendship and physical, with opposite sex and peer pressure to frame a good impression upon everyone, loss of harmony, preparing for life after graduation.
In order to meet the expectations at all levels, trying to balance classes with work and social life, and to prove one’s worth, the students experience total deficiency of orientation, expression, motivation, hopelessness, despair and anguish, all these factors keep the students under stress, frustration, anxiety and gradually this sow the seeds of depression, the condition about which the student(s) may not be aware. The situation if ignored becomes devastating.
Depression is a severe medical condition that engrosses the body, mood and thoughts. It can affect person’s outlook, routine activities, behaviour and conduct. It can change the overall personality. Individual(s) with such illness cannot simply “put themselves together” and get better.
Measures taken by college authorities to combat depression in students-
The college authorities are becoming aware of the level and amount of stress the students are going through. Some of the Institution takes utmost care of the students so that they do not become the victim of depression and related disorders. They do counseling of the students so as to make them aware about various kinds of drug abuse and alcohol abuse (NY Times, 1997).
Various organizations are coming up so as to help students get study loan to complete their education. Many student welfare organizations are established to support the students in their academics, in finances and also give concern to their personal problems that induce stress and depression in the students (Section 4: Supporting Students' Welfare). They take care of any disability if the student has and also aid financial security to the students. They pay chief and supreme level of attention to the “worrying students”.
Some of the Universities depute their staff members to discuss with the students in a friendly and congenial manner so that they can outburst their stress or any kind of anxiety creeping in their minds (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare).
Authorities have started various online help services for those students who feel uncomfortable to discuss out their issues or they are scared of the anticipatory consequences, or they are shy enough to speak (www.counsel.soton.ac.uk/publications/referrals.php).
Various Universities have Chaplains. They are available at Chaplaincy Centre(s) and students can talk confidentially and discuss their worries and grievances.
Numerous Careers Advisory Service(s) (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare), run events throughout the year that encompass Career Focus weeks for Second Years and Finalists. They also organize Work Experience Fair, Finance and I.T Fair, Skill Workshops. These not only support the students but also provide means and guidelines to achieve success.
The college and Universities also have diverse High field health facilities, Day Nurseries, gymnasiums, for better health of the student.
Some of the Colleges also run various personality development programs, they help the students in self- improvement and also build confidence of “CAN DO” attitude.
Nightline services are also provided by some Universities, which comprise confidential telephone listening service run by students for students (Section 4: Supporting Student’s Welfare).
Many higher authorities of educational institutions, universities and colleges are aware of the consequences of stress that their students are going through so they have started appointing psychologists. They talk with college students about the relationships they have with both their parents and peers. Mattering to others is important to college students, and negative affect may be exacerbated if peer relationships are lacking.
To reduce perceived stress and depression, college students may benefit from understanding the developmental process that occurs in college. Psychologists can assist college student clients in developing close and healthy interpersonal relationships with peers by teaching important skills, such as open communication and assertiveness. It is also important to take the sex of the client into consideration given that sex differences were found consistently in this study. Though women may feel that they matter to others more than men do, they also experience more college stress and depression. As women and men report comparable levels of self-esteem, psychologists may want to implement interventions focusing on other factors such as the interpersonal relationships of women, particularly the family and friends to whom they believe they matter.
What measures Colleges and Universities must take to reduce depression and help students coping with it proactively:
“Depression is a huge problem in the college student population” says John Greden M.D executive director of U-M Depression Centre. College students are framing negative headlines in the news, initially it was related to alcohol, drug, physical abuse but in the present scenario the concern is for mental illness in the college campuses. In American Psychology Today Hara Marrano says “Mental illness is absolutely going off the charts on college campuses”. psychiatrist Shamsah Sonawalla of Massachusetts General Hospital says “there is no just increase in the prevalence “ of psychological problems in college students but “an identification of problems earlier . that we recognize it more is a good thing. But we have opened up Pandora’s box” that Many students do not know notice the changes in them, they may feel anxiety, stress blues, but cannot root out the biological cause, they may feel that they are falling behind then their peers (Ann Arbor, MI)
The symptoms of depression are based on- genetics, environment, life events, family and social environment and medical conditions together stimulate the brain to release mood altering neurotransmitters that may lead to anxiety, stress and depression.
The authorities must take the charge of not only counselling the students and parents (if required) but also amend the curriculum if required so as to put let pressure on students. Things like easy ways to study must be implemented. Co=operation is desired in case if the faculty members come across any situation if they notice grouchy and irritable behaviour of the collegiate, if the student becomes slow in thinking and speaking than normal, trouble in concentrating, remembering and making decisions, changes in habits especially eating and sleeping, lose interest in things , they use to enjoy, and if the student(s) have feeling of guilt, hopelessness, and wonder if the life is worth living. Above all if the student is thinking a lot about death or suicide, frequent complains about headache and stomach-ache.
Although the findings of this study are compelling, certain limitations need to be recognized. All of the measures were self report, and there were no behavioral indicators of the constructs being examined. There may have been a ceiling effect on mattering with the average score 3.27 out of a possible 4. In addition, the self-reported yearly family income was relatively high.
In addition, the study was conducted at only one university in one area of the United States. Again, generalizing the findings to students across the United States should be made cautiously. This study found that perceived mattering, a relatively new construct, self-esteem, and sex of participant are highly related to both depression and perceived stress, and that when combined with stress, they accounted for a considerable portion of the variance in depression. These findings have practical implications regarding issues to be addressed in therapy for those psychologists who work on college campuses. In addition, this study adds to the empirical knowledge about depression, as well as perceived stress, and calls for more research on these variables and their interconnectedness.
What Authorities can really do: 1.Help students get organized with their work 2.Students must also be allowed to take breaks, it is essential to have mental relaxation 3. Students must be encouraged for practicing and reharsing on their weakness rather than demotivating them. 4. the attitude to "Do it Now" must be given some relaxation to avoid stress and distress among the students. 5. students must be realized about their limitations and at the same time authorities mut encourage about their talents (hidden and expressed). This will provide confidence and mental relaxation. 6. Attitude of the student must be judged by the faculty members. 7. Students must be encouraged to pland their work schedule to have a systematic and less stressful work. 8. A positive and encouraging atmosphere reduces stress. it is the responsibility of college authorities to organise programs for the students which are related to their cultural and education. 9. Authorities must avoid comparisons between students as this becomes the sole reason for stress in students. 10. Pressures for the examination and performace can be reduced by introducing an educationa system that aids in learning through activities and projects, they should have practical orientation. This helps in grasping the subject fast. 11. Teaching through teaching aids always make the learning easy.
These are the efforts if taken can reduce the stress in college students and help the students to become a good and responsible citizens. The kind of education imparted by the Institutions id depicted in the personality of the students. Hence these students will shape the society in much reformed manner and can become a big help in reducing stress in fellows.

What are these symptoms of? Vivid colors and increased aesthetic and auditory perceptions?
Lately, colors and shapes are so vivid, and I feel like I experience what I see rather than just looking at it. Music makes my mind feel so open and free. Everything aesthetic seems beautiful to me.
This is a terrible comparison, but it's as if I am constantly on acid or shrooms; except it's natural and not brought on by any drugs or anything. It's not synesthesia, though I thought it was...what could this be? I have depression if that helps, and I think I might have schizophrenia (not hearing voices, but the other symptons like feeling alone or feelings of depersonalization). Please don't answer unless you actually understand what I'm talking about and don't make assumptions about depression or schizophrenia.
idk, maybe you've just learned that life is more beautiful than you thought it was, or that you view life as being very precious and finite, so that your perceptions have increased.
i wouldn't jump to conclusions about the whole schizophrenia thing. schizophrenics tend to be born with different brains and thus experience stronger perceptions from the beginning. a stronger indicator would be disorganized thoughts and nonsensical speech, as well as ill-based delusions.

Delirium Tremens Treatment Information
Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal that involves sudden and severe mental or neurological changes.Delirium tremens can occur after a period of heavy alcohol drinking, especially when the person does not eat enough food. It may also be triggered by head injury, infection, or illness in people with a history of heavy use of alcohol. Approximately 10% of males and 3-5% of females are alcoholic; 5% of each group experiences DT. It is most common in people who have a history of alcohol withdrawal , especially in those who drink the equivalent of 7 - 8 pints of beer every day for several months.
symptoms occur most often within 72 hours after the last glass, but can occur up to 7 - 10 days after the last glass. Symptoms may progress rapidly. Withdrawal symptoms include alcoholic feeling jumpy or nervous, feeling fragile, anxiety, irritability or easily excited, emotional instability, the speed of emotional changes, depression, fatigue, difficulty in thinking clearly, palpitations (sensation of smell 's heart beat), sweating, particularly palms of the hands or the face, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. Supportive therapy is an important component of the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and DTs. Thiamine is useful in preventing of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and DTs. Multivitamins and folate frequently are administered to these patients. Haloperidol has been used successfully as adjunctive therapy for rapid control of agitation and alcohol-induced hallucinations. Do not use phenothiazines. Benzodiazepines or barbiturates treat seizures and manifestations of DT. Long-term preventive treatment may begin after the patient recovers from acute symptoms. Does anyone have a happily ever after story with their bipolar parent?
My mother was diagnosed as bipolar about 5 years ago, after I had been out of her home several years. Previous diagnoses include depression, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, hypothyroidism, chronic insomnia, sleep apnea & hypoglycemia. She has visited half a dozen doctors to get these diagnoses. She continually cycles through taking medicine from 1 doctor as prescribed, to taking medicine from several docs who do not know she is doctor shopping, to all-herbal(and I mean like, 20 - 30 different supplements a day), to no medicine.
With each new diagnosis/treatment, she seems to believe that she has turned a corner. If I try to talk to her about behaviors that seem harmful, she becomes too tearful and sleepy to talk. Recently, she has done some very hurtful things. I'm beyond trying to confront her about it.
Does anyone have a similar situation that turned out well? I keep hoping for the best, but her behavior gets more erratic and hurtful as time goes by.
It's possible.
I was diagnosed at age 7 as Bipolar among other things. I had done the whole 20 different doctors 50 billion different pills sometimes all at the same time deal a few hospital stays until I found my "magic" pills. They don't solve everything but I do live a somewhat normal life. The symtoms are very mild but still there. So it is possible. For some though there is no "magic" pills and even more popular is they just don't find them. Always have hope for her though. You don't even know how hard it is to have this. It is the worst feeling in the world to not be able to control your feelings/what you are feeling when you are feeling it. To feel happy when someone you love got dianosed with an uncurable disease is the weirdest/and worst feeling in the world...to not have any control over your feelings in awful. To not be in control of your situation is bad enough for most...to not be in control of anything is a very hopeless feeling. You feel very alone to say the least.
Just know that that is not her. She is not doing those things on purpose. Know that she loves you and can't control it. Keep working on a finding her "magic" pills. Know that she will never completely be herself again though. This is a part of her..and it will never be completly gone.

Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt. By William Shakespeare Measure for Measure1604 Find out about Depression Pills Names
If you have depression, you may feel hopeless and sad or stop feeling pleasure from almost everything you do. You may feel down in the dumps, tearful, or discouraged. You may also be irritable or anxious or have low energy levels. The symptoms of depression are often subtle at first. It can be hard to recognize that symptoms may be connected and that you might have depression.
The two most significant symptoms of depression are:
Loss of interest in or pleasure from most daily activities.
Sadness or hopelessness.
Other symptoms include:
Sleeping too much or not enough.
Losing or gaining weight because of changes in appetite.
Feeling restless and unable to sit still, or feeling that moving takes a great effort.
Feeling unworthy or guilty without an obvious reason.
Feeling tired all the time.
Thinking often about death or suicide.
Having problems concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
If you have at least five of these symptoms for 2 weeks or longer, and one of the symptoms is either sadness or loss of interest, you may be diagnosed with major depression that needs treatment. Even if you have fewer than five symptoms, you may still be depressed and need treatment.
If you have 2 to 4 symptoms for a period of at least 2 years (1 year for a child), you may have a long-term form of depression called dysthymic disorder (dysthymia).
Many women experience mood changes before menstruation. Physical and emotional premenstrual symptoms that interfere with relationships or responsibilities are known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, women who have emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms that seriously interfere with daily life may have a type of depression known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). For more information see the topic Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Is anyone taking Effexor XR for clinical (major) depression?
I am just curious to those who have the same diagnosis as I have and are or have taken this drug for it. What is your experience with it? I read that a high percentage of people have insomnia with it. That is one thing I am definatley trying to avoid! I know it will take weeks before I know how it's going to affect me, but I would like to hear some advice/get knowledge about anyone that it has been perscribed to with people diagnosed with clinical depresson like me. Thank you
I was on a high dose of Effexor for probably up to 8 years.
Personally I felt it really helped, however it is one of those things you do have to take consistantly at the times it is prescribed to you, that is crucial.
I found when I was well, I stopped because I didn't think I needed it anymore, so when I stopped my world crashed in around me.
So to be honest, I really belive it is a good one to take, stay with the prescribed dosage and don't stop suddenly.

Wellbutrin for treating depression
The generic name of Wellbutrin is bupropion. This drug is to be orally administered. It is prescribed as medication for treating depression. Wellbutrin is effective against severe depression as well as any temporary depression.
Generic drugs are normally sold under some market name. The composition and ratio of drugs in these brand names or market names differ. Bupropion is therefore sold as Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin XL, Wellbutrin SR, Budeprion, Zyban, or Aplenzin.
There are some do's and don'ts in relation to this drug. For instance, this antidepressant should not be prescribed for patients who suffer with any eating problems such as bulimia or anorexia, or patients who suffer seizures for example during any epileptic attack. Likewise prescribing this medication for those who have abruptly left alcohol, or smoking, instead of leaving these habits gradually is also not advisable. At times two or more medications may contain same drugs. In such cases, the body may receive more quantity of such antidepressants than it can handle. So the physician who is prescribing medications should be aware of drugs that his patient is taking.
There are some medicines that should not be taken with Wellbutrin. The drugs that should not be given along with Wellbutrin are primarily monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Phenelzine, selegiline, rasagiline, isocarboxazid, and tranylcypromine are some of the drugs that come under this category. These are sold under brand names Nardil, Eldepryl, Azilect, Marplan, and Parnate, respectively. This restriction would however cease if there is a fortnight's gap between the administration of the antidepressant, and these drugs. Taking Wellbutrin when another drug that serves the same purpose is also bad.
Other medical conditions that might prompt the doctor to prescribe different medication, or different dosage of Wellbutrin include kidney problems, manic depression or bipolar disorder, liver complications, heart ailments, high blood pressure, spinal injury, brain injury, and any tumor in spine or brain.
Therefore, it is necessary for the doctor to know all the medications that the patient took before approaching him for treating depression, and the patient should also disclose all health problems that he or she ever had, because it is only the doctor who knows which information is relevant.
If Wellbutrin is given to a patient who is 24 years or below, the youngster may start feeling suicidal. This means the physician needs to strictly monitor the patient's condition for almost 3 months.
Wellbutrin is a well known drug and at the same time it is widely considered as the best option for most of the strange diseases that you might come along. It is always advised to buy these drugs at the Canadian pharmacy , as you can save a lot of time and money. You can click here to Buy Wellbutrin Online .

Unable to gain full mental clarity during the day, feels as though I am in a "haze" all day.
Don't feel sad necessarily, just feel bad because of the
mental clarity problem.
Have tried sleep medications such as Ambien and Lunesta with no good after affects.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
As a student nurse, I've just gone thru my psych clinicals, so I feel confident enought to offer this advice: There are many new antidepressant meds available today. If it was your regular doctor who prescibed your current meds, then I suggest seeing a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist will be completely up to date on all the meds out there, and will have vastly more experience with your specific issues. I truely believe that 99% of mental illness is biochemical in nature and can be managed by pharmacology.
As for your sleep problems, remember, depression is the cause of irregular sleep patterns and not vice versa. Ambien and Lunesta are great drugs for most people, but just not you. People with depression often experience anxiety as well, so perhaps another drug like Xanex will work better at night. Also you could just try 50mg of diphenhydromine hydrochloride, which is the generic name for Benadryl. That should get you to sleep fast. But be aware that it will dry out your nasel passages and if you take more that 50 mg., it could make you agitated. My mom did that (she thinks that if 1 pill works good, than 3 or 4 pills will work better).

Keep Healthy And Good Looking: Address The Stress
The recent events of this past year have caused higher levels of stress than most of us have been accustomed to in quite a while. Our practice has observed an increase in cracked, more sensitive teeth, more complaints of headaches, and elevated occurrences of mouth ulcers. Without a doubt, mental stress increases your chances of cardiovascular problems and causes undesirable weight gains due to higher levels of cortisol. Even worse, weight gains may cause one to try dangerous fad diets or even contemplate “purging” to lower calorie intake. This anxiety can lead to bigger eating disorders like bullimia or anorexia nervosa.
Furthermore, the stress ultimately takes a toll on your appearance beyond just a bulging waistline:
Your Skin-redness, psoraisis allow the skin to become less effective a barrier against harmful chemicals. The skin becomes more prone to dehydration and release of free radicals causing more wrinkle on the surface. The muscles of the face (from frowning, etc.) create deeper changes.
Sleep Deprivation from worrying or depression makes you look tired ,as well as, leading to decreased heart and immune function. This is a vicious cycle that must be rectified.
Your Smile certainly feels the effects from the weight of concerns, a depressed ego and possibly finances. Beyond the psychology, there is the physiologic clenching and grinding of the teeth which usually leads to headaches, cheek biting, and/or even worse, permanent damage to the enamel. Not only do your teeth wear down, get shorter, begin to yellow, but your bite begins to suffer. Furthermore, a bad bite starts to show up in your face because your facial muscles are stressed to compensate for your bite.
HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS!
You can do something about it!
Here’s a few suggestions from:
Improve Yor Emotions With Motion–exercise will make you breathe more ( help you relax), lose wait, and improve your self esteem
Laugh More–the power of laughing is magical. Don’t listen to the news–unless it’s good or you’re in it. Listen to satellite radio comedy channels in the car or watch a fun comedy. Those happy feelings conquers the anxiety and soothes alots.

Don’t Fight Your Bite –relaxing yourself is a great start. Prevention is the best medicine. However, if there are cracks or wear and tear in your mouth , don’t wait to repair them to avoid even more costly discomfort, costs, or effects on your appearance.

Do I qualify for veneers on NHS?
I am 23 years old and I used to be paranoid as a kid that I had big front teeth. When I was around 14, I sanded my own two front teeth down to the same size as the teeth either side of them. I now realise as an adult that they were perfectly normal and that it was a very stupid thing to do.
I was always scared and embarrassed to mention it to anyone until now and I have been completely beating myself up about this for years. I have an extreme lack of confidence in a lot of things including speaking and smiling which is caused by what I have done.
I am currently on benefits for depression and so I do not pay for dentistry. I have booked an appointment with the dentist for the first time in years as I have always been too scared. I am hoping that he will restore my teeth with veneers but I am completely worried that he will not do them as I am an NHS patient. The appointment is nout until the new year. Do you think I qualify for veneers as an NHS patient?
On the NHS there is a maximum you have to pay for one work session with the dentist. It's around £250 which is not a lot considering the cost of this work done privately. If your dentist is good he will do all of the work you need (costing thousands privately in one session) in the single session and not charge huge amounts.

If we all did the things we are capable of doing we would literally astound ourselves. By Thomas Alva Edison Find out about Dysthymia Depression Diagnosis
What is Psychological Depression?
It is one of the most common and most serious mental health problems facing people today. Psychological depression can interfere with a person's ability to function effectively throughout the day or even to have the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and it is in fact so common that over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime.
The causes behind depression are complex and not yet fully understood but we are able to treat it much more effectively because we have a better understanding of the causes of clinical depression.
The first step in fighting depression is to understand what it is, how it affects you, and what causes it. Unfortunately, many people do not recognize that depression is a treatable illness. Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment; although the great majority, even those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped. This condition is so common that over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime.
symptoms of major depression include at least five of the following symptoms (at least one must include the first and second listed below) and they must be present nearly every day, all day, for 2 weeks: Persistent depressed mood, including feelings of emptiness or sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, feelings of hopelessness or pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness, insomnia, early morning awakening or oversleeping, change in eating (either loss or increased appetite), decreased energy, fatigue or feeling slowed down, restlessness and irritability, difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions, thoughts of suicide or death, persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders or chronic pain. A less severe type of depression, Dysthymia, involves long-term, chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keep one from functioning well or from feeling good.
The most important thing anyone can do for the depressed person is to help him or her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The guidelines for diagnosis of major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder are found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM IV). The depressed mood must persist for greater than two weeks in order to warrant this diagnosis.
The first step to getting appropriate treatment for depression is a physical examination by a physician. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression. If a diagnosis of depression is made, treatment with medication and/or psychotherapy will help the depressed person return to a happier, more fulfilling life. Most do best with combined treatment: medication to gain relatively quick symptom relief and psychotherapy to learn more effective ways to deal with life's problems, including depression.
Psychological depression is not something you can just "snap out of", it is a serious medical condition that affects the chemistry of the brain. With the appropriate medical treatment the vast majority of people of suffer from its effects can live depression free lives.

Can you tell me about dysthymia?
During our first visit, my therapist said I might have dysthymia. I read it is a mild depression that is the most common form of depression. For some reason, hearing this bothered me because I felt like he wasn't taking it seriously. I feel like my depression is more than just mild...and like this form of depression is just for people who are looking for a diagnosis, as if it's not a serious condition. I don't mean to be offensive. I really just want to understand more about it and not be so ignorant about it.
If you are physically sick you can elicit the interest of a battery of physicians; but if you are mentally sick you are lucky if the janitor comes around. By Martin H. Fischer Find out about Herbal Depression Remedy
Before we look at whether a herbal depression solution could be the answer to all our prayers, let us look at a few facts about depression.
People tend to shrug their shoulders when confronted with depression in a loved one or colleague and rarely know how to handle it. Yet the statistics show that this mental condition is a serious illness and needs to be treated. Look at the figures from the National Mental Health Association. There is a strong link between suicide and this condition. Between 30 -70% of suicide cases have had some form of depressive illness during their lives.
Do you know what Jarsin 300 is? it is the most popular brand of all the herbal depression remedies in Germany. In fact it accounts for between 25- 50% of all the prescriptions in that country for depression and puts Prozac and Xanax, the conventional anti depressants, in the shade.
The herb used in this preparation is called St. John's Wort and has been used for over two thousand years, first as a diuretic by the Romans! In fact, the Roman physician Galen, who was the doctor to four Roman Emperors, used it successfully for many ailments although he did not realize that it was also useful for depression.
People are curious to know why this herbal depression solution is so popular in Germany. The answer is that Germany is more open minded about complementary medicine, as indeed is the UK. This means in practice that there are more funds available for research. That research has shown that symptoms of depression are greatly alleviated using this preparation with much fewer side effects than those experienced with Xanax and Paxil, the conventional chemical synthetic medications.
Side effects from the anti depressant drugs mentioned above can range from loss of libido, weight gain, suicidal thoughts and even aggressive behavior, not to mention self injury. There are also some mysteries about the long term effects of these drugs and there are dangers of getting addicted as well. Finally, they do not cure this mental condition at all and their main effect seems to be to alleviate symptoms but the 'zombie' feeling and living in a shadowy world are often noted.
If you are suffering from depression, it may be time to take a closer look at a herbal depression solution and look at other herbs such as ginseng, passion flower and gingko biloba. You could also do a check on the company producing these herbal depression remedies to make sure that they are following FDA guidelines and are offering guarantees. Treatment for depression has come a long way in the past several years. Most individuals that have depressive symptoms for more than a couple of weeks now have a smorgasboard selection of different antidepressant medications that can be prescribed for them by their doctor. Although it normally takes 3-4 weeks for most individuals to absorb the medication into their system sufficiently enough for it to work, the majority of these patients can get themselves back on track after a few short months of taking their medicine.
But what about those individuals that have chronic depression?
People that suffer chronic depression have a serious disorder that, once diagnosed, require continuous treatment and regular doses of antidepressant medication. Those with chronic depression continue to take medication, under the supervision of their doctor, as long as necessary in order to maintain a "normal" chemical balance in their brain that helps them to lead a normal, productive life.
Recently, many individuals suffering from chronic depression have built up a tolerance to their medication. This problem isn't isolated to antidepressant medication, as many people will build a tolerance to what they're taking over time. However, most antidepressants were actually designed for "normal" per se people and shorter periods of use. In other words, the people with the real problems weren't being targeted when these drugs were created.
There are other therapies available such as light therapy, shock therapy, electromagnetic therapy, ect. The problem here is that some people aren't able to use these treatments because of other existing conditions. Also, the vagus nerve pacemaker makes most individuals uncomfortable because it must be placed underneath the skin. Even then there's no guarantee of success.
Neither researchers nor physicians understand why the human brain goes from working fine to becoming unbalanced. One theory is aging of the brain, but this theory doesn't quite fit for patients that are now twenty five years old and have been having problems since they were fifteen. That's only ten years and doesn't fit the theory.
Research is being aggressively done in order to find answers for those that have these long term issues, but answers are coming slow and if the individuals current medication stops working then it presents a real problem for these people to continue to lead a normal life. Chronic depression is a very serious condition that can easily take over a person's life, affecting their jobs and their relationships with family and friends.
The biggest challange faced by researchers is the fact that so many people react differently to the current depression drugs on the market. They don't have a very sound blueprint to work from when creating something new.
At this point the only thing that can be done for those that suffer from chronic depression is to continue to try different combinations of medications on individuals until, hopefully, the doctor can find the combination that will be helpful and then, hopefully on a long term basis. We can only hope that a permanent, long term solution will be found soon for these individuals.
RE-- Depression Cycling-- I constantly cycle from happy to sad, I get on a new drug, it works for a few weeks?
then BANG i CRASH again! then back to dr., try a new one, it works for a few weeks then i crash again,, anyone out there had this happen & was able to overcome it? I think I am Bi-Polar 2 & i am currently on: Ablifiy- 7 mgs, adderall-40mgs, paxil- 60 mgs, & Remeron- 30 mgs.
Besideds asking my dr, what advice, life experiences out there might be able to help me out please..??
ps- mood stabilizers ive been on: Lithium, Ablify, Lamictal, & Depakote.
It scares me that you think you are Bipolar 2. If the Dr. is prescribing you all those medications, you need to have a clear diagnosis. Certainly I would assume it would be Bipolar but if you are a rapid cycler, that is more serious than Bipolar II. Always be sure exactly what your diagnosis is, ask your doctor exactly what he is treating you for. I do not like to give personal opinions on meds because everyone has their opinions on them however I would have to agree that I would personally rather try staying on the same med for a longer period and up the dosage than keep switching. Eventually you must switch but that is over time not immediatley. Also, those are a lot of meds for only Biploar II.. Paxil 60 MG is strong. They usually change you after 40 MG and Abilify is used a lot for Bipolar I and schizophrenia.
You need to have a clear communication with your doc. If you don't completely understand everything, ask. If your doc is not compassionate toward your mental health, find a new one. Don't let your doctor treat you like another mentally ill statistic. You are a human being and deserve the caring, respect and chance to heal in the best way possible.
Good Luck.
