Dog Health Paw Problem Can Be Prevented

If your dog has a paw problem, this needs immediate attention to prevent infection and other serious problems. The dog health paw problem can cause the beloved pet to become aggressive, sad and depressed. Dogs have gained the status of being a part of the family and need special care. Just like you, their health and happiness matters and only you can supply the care.

Causes of the Dog Health Paw Problem

Look at the bottom of your foot and you will see that a dog's pads are just as soft as your foot. Imagine having a piece of glass suck in your foot. The dog will feel the same pain as you do. Dogs have a third digit bone that appears shorter and accounts for why these breeds of dogs are said to have cat feet.

Doberman Pinschers, Giant Schnauzer, Sheep dogs and Akita's all share the cat feet along with many more breeds. Some breeds have feet called hare feet such as Samoyed, Greyhounds and some toy breeds. This paw has center toes longer than the side toes.

The paw absorbs the shock when a dog is running or jumping. When a dog runs, the paw allows for flexibility and is able to bear the weight of the animal. Checking the paws regularly for any type of infection or injury is vital to keeping the dog health paw problem from becoming an issue. Not only can the infection affect the paws, but the infection if not treated can spread to the rest of the dog's body.

Treatment of the Dog Paw

If your dog has a paw injury, you need to clean this area with soap and water and apply an antibiotic cream. If the dog licks the area, wrapping the paw until the antibiotic cream has time to work is needed. Most dogs will take care of minor injuries themselves, but injuries that are more serious require your help and sometime a veterinarian. For more info see http://www.aboutdoghealth.org/doghealthproblems/large-dogs.html on large dog health issues.

Unclipped nails grow out and curl under, which will eventually grow into the pads causing open sores and in some cases, the dog cannot walk due to pain. These nails need clipping down to the pinkish part of the nail, which if clipped will bleed and cause pain to the dog. If the nails have grown long, you need to clip weekly and the pinkish part of the nail will recede until you finally have the nails short enough for comfort. Dog health paw problem issues do not have to be an issue when the dog is properly cared for.

Do not allow the dog to walk on hot sand or blacktop ground during extremely hot days. If you know what it feels like for you, it feels the same for the dog. This can burn their pads and cause a great deal of pain. Slivers of glass or fissile bushes that become embedded in the pads need to be removed with a tweezers just as you would do to yourself. Dog you have hair growing between the pads need to have the hair clipped down to prevent pain when walking. This accounts for Pekinese, Shih-Tzu's, Yorkies and other similar dog breeds.

Is it possible that a dog triggered my current depression?

About three days ago we got a dog, ever since then I haven't been the same. I feel different inside and I think it is depression. I don't find enjoyment in the activities I did before we got him. I also just feel tired all of the time, I really like the dog a lot. For some reason though I just want to get rid of him. What can I do to get back to my normal self? I would like to keep the dog, but if it is needed.

On the contrary pets are well known to help people with depression. Time to see a doctor.

It is not the cares of today but the cares of tomorrow that weigh a man down. By George MacDonald Find out about Depression Dog Generator

What To Take For Depression - Prescription drugs Or Natural Medicine?

If you're wondering what to take for depression: natural medicine or prescription drugs, this article will help you decide which is the best choice for you. You will also learn some practical tips for helping you feel better about your life.

When most people think about treating depression, they think about prescription drugs. This is because pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars every year on advertising. While prescription drugs may be the preferred treatment of doctors in the United States, other countries with more progressive health and prevention programs, like Germany, consider natural medicines the number one treatment. In fact, when you consider that natural remedies have been used for centuries and antidepressants for less than 50 years, prescription drugs are really the new kids on the block.

When considering what to take for depression, it's important to understand that while drugs do suppress the symptoms of anxiety and depression, they are not a cure. While drugs work for some people, they do not work for others. In fact, some drugs can make symptoms worse due to their side effects. Although the side effects will vary with drug that you take, some common ones include weight gain, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The bottom line is that some people can tolerate side effects better than others.

Although many people do fine on prescription medications, others are concerned about the long term implications of taking these drugs. Although pharmaceutical companies know that they work well in some cases, even they aren't sure about their long term effect on the brain and whether they contribute to decline in brain function.

By contrast, natural remedies have been used by countless generations since the time of Socrates. In this regard, they have certainly stood the test of time. Made from natural herbs that have been proven to treat depression, like St. John's Wort and Passion Flower, they elevate mood and create motivation by increasing the production of serotonin and dopamine. Most people can use these natural supplements without side effects which makes them an excellent solution to the question what to take for depression. Unlike drugs, they have no worries about addiction or implications for long term use.

What to Take For Depression: A Prescription for Good Food and Exercise

In fact, after taking them for a few weeks (like drugs, they do take some time to build up in the system), you will start to feel better, so you can make some small changes that will enhance your mood even more. Since it's easier to make changes when you feel good and are motivated to make improvements to your life, this is a good strategy for lifting yourself permanently out of depression. The first change is to make simple substitutions in your diet. If you have been eating a lot of sugar or processed food, substitute healthy food slowly over time. For instance, instead of having a big bag of chips, have some fresh crunchy celery sticks with sea salt. Instead of having a bowl of ice cream, choose a bowl of fresh berries in season with a big dollop of fresh whipped cream. As you eat better, good food will enhance the action of the natural remedy and will be ready for the next step in this simple program.

Of course the final answer in what to take for depression is to make sure that you get daily exercise. This is not the no-pain-no-gain type of exercise, but movement that you enjoy, that makes you feel good to be in your body. When nobody is home, turn on your favorite tunes and dance to your heart's content. Or take your dog for a brisk walk around the block, enjoying the natural beauty, sounds and smells of the world around you. Make exercise into a sensual experience and you will look forward to it every day.

So there you have it, your answer for what to take for depression: a natural supplement that lifts your mood without drugging you, good food and daily exercise. What could be simpler, more practical and easier than that? Get your life back and get started today.

What Mental Health Providers Do Not Tell You about Why Residents in Long Term Care Are So Depressed

Forward-looking long term care administrators have long pondered how to eliminate the dejection and malaise that infests their facilities. They have heard about culture-change and tried various solutions: staff wearing regular clothes, pleasant bird cages, providing more resident options and meetings about communication skills with the staff.

However, nothing seems able to generate the meaningful changes needed for a pleasant and more optimistic environment.

How Do You Transform Long Term Care from Being A Festering Incubator of Malaise and Hopelessness to Becoming an Uplifting Gallery to Resident Achievement and Accomplishment?

I have practiced clinical psychology for 30 years and treated hundreds of elderly patients for depression and anxiety. I have concluded that insidious communication patterns within long term care facilities themselves are often at fault.

These, combined with the out-dated techniques used by the mental health providers they use, inadvertently create the conditions which cause residents to be even more depressed and dejected.

There is a growing concern that the only mental health care residents often get is from geriatric psychiatrists who often miss the feelings they experience about their plight. Just write a prescription, maybe tell them how their thinking processes are distorted, check in occasionally and see you later.

The use of medication is often the only treatment a resident receives, even though the research literature clearly and consistently emphasizes that it must be combined with psychotherapy to achieve optimal outcome.

However, many psychologists use pathology-driven psychotherapy in their treatments. They build and expand on the problems and repeated complaints of the resident thereby encouraging their impact on his/her awareness. They often contribute to the lack of significance and de-humanization residents feel because their approaches are often too impersonal, mechanistic and dismissive. Consequently, resident losses continually loom larger in consciousness.

They generate impersonal case histories, which fail to illuminate each individual's experience in the struggle to survive illness. Residents, too, increasingly complain about this crisis of having no meaning-nothing to live for.

This underscores the need for a cutting-edge mental health program that addresses meaning obtained by the resident from his/her travails and his/her strengths and successes, no matter how small. This dignifies him/her. After all, that is what culture-change is all about!

What Most Mental Health Providers Do Not Know about How Residents in Long Term Care Become So Depressed

Conventional mental health providers miss the point that the resident makes sense of his/her world by creating a coherent facility persona by subconsciously crafting a particular story and role for him/her in it. We have all seen the abandoned residents, betrayed residents, and the ostracized residents. When we see no objective verification, we conclude that they are the result of internal dramas that the residents are really feeling and living which have been created by inadvertent, though insidious, hypnotic processes taking place in the facility itself.

Just like the stage hypnotists subject really feels like and becomes a barking dog, the facility resident becomes and feels like a victim drowning in his/her own tragedy. Therefore, the residents hopeless story, though not necessarily a FACT, becomes one.

And unfortunately the screaming misery that results becomes the biggest FACT of all!

Implications For Your Facility:

This insidious waking hypnosis is induced by repetitive problem-saturated conversations taking place in the facility. THAT IS Right! The CNAs, nurses, therapists, families, doctors and residents themselves unknowingly collude, by their use of various interactions and words, to create a reality which is catastrophic, demoralizing and futile.

We undergo waking hypnosis all the time e.g. in the theatre when an endearing character dies we may cry and feel hopeless; if our parents continually told us how stupid we were, we may grow up actually feeling stupid. THE SAME SITUATION can be perceived differently by different people based on the story of themselves that was internalized by repetitive pervasive conversations.

One person is treated for cancer and describes the therapeutic experience as miserable and the worst time in my life. Another describes it as just a difficult challenge.

Both had almost identical experiences and walked away with vastly different interpretations, stories and feelings. We learn thru repetition. Repeated suggestions and conversational themes associated with emotionally charged experiences are powerful in crafting a certain role for a resident in a particular story.

The residents internalized story can change over time because it is contingent on the type of consistent interactions in which s/he is engaged. Interactions or conversations need not be verbal, but are often composed of nonverbal components. A nurse who is gruff in manner is sending the suggestion that the resident is a pain or perhaps inept. Every interaction with a resident should be seen as resulting over time in a better or worse outcome for the residents felt sense of self.

Strength-Embedded Psychotherapy starts to treat resident depression and anxiety by using asset mining, a method of sensitively, yet tenaciously, unearthing any improvements, large or small, that can be credited to the resident. Then s/he implements the skillful use of conscious conversation: manifesting attention, imbuing constructive meaning and significance to resident suffering and replacing problem-saturated conversations with strength and progress saturated ones.

These techniques are reinforced by the long term care staff and are used over time with repetition and consistency. The therapist then incorporates them deftly in the residents internalized story, occasionally over his/her objections, so that the new plot can be internalized and eventually changed from one starring resident victimization to one showcasing mastery.

Throughout the process, the resident will often tenaciously attempt to revert to saturating conversations with problems and references to victimization. The resident craves continuity of the problem-saturated story which s/he has internalized.

After all s/he has depended upon it, often at great emotional cost, for a consistent sense of identity. However, with consistency and over time, the new trance starts to take effect with the resident experiencing him/herself as masterful and potent, rather than miserable and hopeless.

Compare SEP-strength-embedded psychotherapy with the usual pathology-focused techniques of most mental health providers. Talk to a resident for 15 minutes; just write a prescription and follow-up occasionally. If you are a psychologist, tell them how their thinking processes are distorted. Then over-use empathy to the point that the resident is repeating the same miseries and complaints over and over to the point that they loom ever larger in consciousness.

These pathology-driven treatments continue to infest long term care with dire results. They build on the problems of the resident and build their impact on his/her awareness. They often contribute to their insignificance and de-humanization because they are impersonal, mechanistic and dismissive. Consequently, resident losses continually loom larger in consciousness.

The train to culture-change is moving faster. Not changing your mental health provider to one who emphasizes strength and success-based approaches can put you in danger of being perceived as an uncaring dinosaur later. On the other hand, enthusiastically adopting it now can position you as a forward-looking pioneer who is contributing to the historic changes taking place in the long term care industry.

Dog Depression Dogs Quotes:

Worry is interest paid on trouble before it comes due. By William Ralph Inge Find out about Dog Depression Dogs

Listen Up Your Dog is Talking to You!

Imagine that every time you attempt to talk to your best friend their response is one of harsh scolding words. Now picture this happening not once, twice or thrice but almost every single day. I’m betting soon there won’t be much of anything to call as friendship left! I’ll even go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that soon the two of you won’t be talking altogether. Perhaps you’d withdraw into some kinda shell or maybe the bombardment of negativity and criticism would drive you to lash out in anger one day.

Okay, now let’s picture this scenario a little bit differently in that you happen to be a dog and that supposed best friend of yours is your owner.  That makes it a tad more complicated doesn’t it, especially if your owner is not trying to be intentionally cruel or harsh but simply doesn’t understand how to communicate properly with you!

Okay revert back to your human form for now. Have you ever tried communicating with someone who doesn’t speak the same language as you? It isn’t easy is it! There’s a whole lot of arm waving, gesticulating, self-conscious grinning and facial contortions, much of which isn’t actually helping you to understand one another any better…and we are talking about communication between individuals from the same species here! That pretty much puts into perspective the monumental wall standing between you and your dog communicating efficiently with one another.

The very real problem here is that you don’t talk dogspeak and neither does your dog speak any human language but that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn how to communicate effectively with one another. And seeing as you happen to be the more intelligent species in this particular partnership, the onus is on you to create that better environment of communication. However unfortunately far too often this is not the case, more often than not it being the dog owner representing the party that gets irritated and confrontational during sessions of communication. If and when a situation such as this continues for a long enough duration this in turn could make your dog to:

•    Become depressed and withdraw
•    Start avoiding you
•    Whimper and slink about whenever you’re in the vicinity
•    Become aggressive and unmanageable

Communication With Your Dog Starts With Understanding Your Dog

Like us humans, dogs have their own standard dog etiquette that incorporates accepted proper behavior and quite naturally in the same way that we expect them to respond in a desired manner to our communication so do they expect no less from us. But as pointed out previously, being that we are two very different species, notwithstanding the fact that we have co-existed side by side for thousands of years, the inescapable fact is that dogs and us speak entirely different languages!

Thus to forge a better relationship with your dog you need to have a better understanding of dog communicative signals other than the obvious ones that comprise dog language.

Dog Language

Dogs bark, growl, yelp, snarl, whine, howl, warble and sing as a means of communication between themselves and other species such as us. Dogs can tell pretty accurately from the tone and inflection of our voices what kind of mood and state of mind we are in, much in the same way that we can judge their intent from the type of vocalization they utter. However there is only so far such communication takes usand the plain fact of the matter is that so much of dog language exists in the form of unvocalized signals; something the average dog owner is utterly unaware of.

Generally speaking all dogs no matter where they come from (thanks to their common ancestral origins, the wolf) understand what another dog is saying. However some dogs are better adapted to unvocalized signals than others. For example dogs that have docked tails cannot communicate dog signals that incorporate tail action. Also color patterns do play a part in dog language communication, and dogs that have black outline eyes with tan spots above them are better able to communicate eye-related signals because of such contrast. Completely black dogs or white ones are at a disadvantage from this perspective, which may explain why black dogs use the licking signal more often than the ones using facial expressions.

Common Unvocalized Dog Signals

Nose Licking:  Nose licking by dogs is one of the signals they use to show their discomfort or alternatively it used as a message to calm down other dogs or people in a situation in which the dog doing the licking evaluates as one that is too stressful.

Head Turning:  The motion of head turning could be a subtle swivel or a single swift movement; sometimes the head turning could be a prolonged side to side movement. Averting their heads is another manner in which dogs can defuse potentially explosive situations between themselves because by turning their heads away they are signaling non-threatening intentions in polite doggy speak.

Next time you are stooping over your dog look carefully to see if he or she turns their head away; if they do then they are evidently signaling to you that it makes them feel uncomfortable. If you pay special attention next time you’ll also notice that dogs rarely look directly at one another because it is considered impolite and rife with threat. When dogs are seated in group they generally avert their heads away from one another in keeping with polite dog etiquette (much like the way civilized persons make a point of not staring directly at the person opposite them in a subway car).

Eye Squinting:  Dogs narrow their eyes to express to the person or fellow canine to whom their gaze is directed that they have no ill intentions, and that there is no veiled threat implied from that gaze. Whenever a dog looks at another dog directly with no threatening intentions, the dog squints its eyes to make sure the other dog understands that no aggression is intended.

Dog Bowing:  Bowing represents a number of things in doggy language but most commonly it is an invitation to play. Dogs don’t only bow to other dogs they also bow to people and other animals. When a bowing dog also hops from foot to foot then unquestionably that is an invitation to play. Sometimes dogs also use bowing as a means  to calm or de-stress a situation.

Yawning:  A yawning dog does not reflect a tired dog; yawning happens to be yet another de-stressing signal in doggy language. This is one dog signal you can use quite effectively to calm your dog when it is anxious or agitated. These are just a few of the many unvocalized signals dog use to communicate with other dogs and us. You can easily use some of these dog signals to communicate with your furry best friend. However I wouldn’t recommend going around slobbering your tongue across your face; that may go down well in doggy world but I am not sure the same can be said in the real world!

Depression Joint Pain Quotes:

When one has too great a dread of what is impending one feels some relief when the trouble has come. By Joseph Joubert Find out about Depression Joint Pain

Fibromyalgia Joint Pain: A Form of Arthritis

The main areas that are affected are tender points and muscles in different parts of the body. The problem can sometimes be very complicated and the extent of suffering can be intense and almost debilitating.

symptoms of Fibromyalgia Joint Pain

The symptoms of fibromyalgia joint pain often tend to overlap with those of autoimmune diseases. They might also overlap with those of muscoskeletal conditions. This is why it is sometimes very difficult to diagnose. In many cases, defining the signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia is part of coming up with a diagnostic framework of this condition. Even in this case objective and subjective symptoms are difficult to tell them apart.

About 2 percent of American population is estimated to be sufferers of fibromyalgia syndrome. There are two main criteria that are used to classify fibromyalgia joint pain by American College of Rheumatology. The first one is the history of the pain that spreads to all the four body quadrants of the patient’s body which are the right, left side, below waist and above waist for a period of not less than three months.

The second criterion is the presence of intense pain in not less then 11 of the 18 tender joints when they are subjected to physical examination. The force applied to these joints has to be equivalent to 9lbs or 4 kg. In most cases, pain in fibromyalgia is migratory. In other words, it keeps moving from one part of the body to the other. This is a clear indication that the central nervous system is not functioning well.

The manner in which the body responds to stress also determines the manner in which fibromyalgia joint pain spreads throughout the four body quadrants. Stress becomes a major cause of fibromyalgia syndrome when the body is unable to handle stress. In this case, depression sets in leading in a very awful situation whereby an individual’s health deteriorates at a very alarming rate.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome among Women

Fibromyalgia joint pain is very common among women who are in the child-bearing age. Children and old people can also be affected by this condition. Apart from pain that occurs in tender tissues, there are also other symptoms that are non-defining in nature. One of these symptoms is fatigue. One feels very tired and this might cause or be accompanied by lack of sleep, sweating at night and disturbances in the form of cognitive difficulties and memory lapses.

Tension might also occur accompanied by migraine headaches. If the rib cage is affected by pain one becomes very sure that the problem that ails the individual is in deed suffering from fibromyalgia joint pain. Some people become very sensitive to chemicals when they are suffering from this condition.

I’m taking anti depression medication (celexa, & Bupropion) for couple of months now. I also have pain in my joints that I have been taking pain medication with little improvements. Now I was thinking of using alternative relief like medical marijuana. Would I have to stop taking my other medications in order to use it?

Medicinal marijuana is only available by prescription,in most states it is illegal to have it otherwise.
Normally medicinal marijuana is used for extreme cases of glaucoma (an ocular disease).
I am not sure what the mixing of your anti-depressants and using marijuana would do but since you need a prescription in order to legally use it,asking your doctor would solve the whole question on the ordeal.

Depression Dog Therapy Quotes:

Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy to worry at night. By Author Unknown Find out about Depression Dog Therapy

Therapy Dogs Bring Joy And Comfort

Because dogs are such kind and loveable creatures, they are often used in various type of therapy in order to help those who have met with unfortunate circumstances. A therapy dog can bring great relief to adults and kids alike just by their simple presence and contact. Even if they don't do anything but allow an individual to pet them they can be a great source of comfort.

Therapy dogs are utilized in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, therapy centers, and even taken to disaster areas. The underlying qualification to be a therapy dog relies upon the dog's individual personality and temperament. The dog must be calm, patient, and gentle. They need to enjoy human contact and allow themselves to be petted and hugged by total strangers. Therapy dogs come from many different breeds but golden retrievers are among the most common due to their gentle dispositions.

Therapy dogs are not the same as service dogs. They have not necessarily been trained to perform any specific function other than to provide comfort. They are not given the same legal rights as service dogs and therefore are not automatically allowed access to places where animals are normally prohibited. Institutions that do allow them in general have requirements and stipulations that must be met before they are allowed entry.

The requirements might include certifications of health and vaccinations from a veterinarian and accreditation from an organization that tests the behavior of therapy dogs. The dogs may have to pass tests that show they can withstand sudden movements and noises and are not spooked by unusual equipment like canes and wheelchairs.

Some nursing homes might have a live-in therapy dog but usually a therapy dog is brought in on a set schedule to visit the residents. The dog may do a few simple tricks for entertainment but his main job is to simply visit with the residents and let them touch him and take joy in his presence.

Oftentimes, therapy dogs and their owners are simply volunteers using their own means and time to bring joy to shut-ins or the disabled. These dogs might even do more than simply brighten someone's day. Companionship with animals has also been linked to decreasing depression, lowering blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Working with therapy dogs may also help patients improve their wheelchair maneuverability skills and fine motor skills, they could even help strengthen balance. In addition to helping alleviate depression, therapy dogs help to reduce anxiety and loneliness, increase attention and interaction, and develop an interest in group recreation. They may also help children with developmental disabilities increase vocabulary, and learn more about concepts like size and color.

Therapy dogs have an important place in nursing homes providing companionship for the elderly and in hospitals bringing joy to the sick and injured. They are also an important aspect of treating childhood disabilities like developmental delays, mental disorders, healing from trauma, and autism.

Therapy dogs prove to us just how powerful the bond between mankind and dogs actually is. Dogs can reach us in ways another human cannot and because of that they bring comfort and joy where it is needed most.

Help with service dog training?

I have depression and panic attacks, and I know it's not a big deal to most people, but it is to me. Anyway, I have depression and panic attacks, and I'm going to Job Corps in about a month, I would like to have my dog trained to be my therapy dog, since I am going far from my therapist. I would like to train my dog to be my service dog and take her with me, since both my mother (who gets me through my panic attacks) and my therapist (who gets me through my depression) will be in Portland when I'm five hours away in Yachats. I would like to have my dog trained to get me through the things my mother and therapist get me through, and am in need of suggestions.

I really don't think there is a way to train your dog to respond to that. Instead of having it come to you, how about you go to your dog? When I go to stores I hold held my service dog. Be sure if you are to go into public places with it, to have the certification that the dog is a working animal, and have a red vest on it with words clearly seen "Service Dog" to prevent idiots from calling you a retard <3 {Past experience, made me want to cry >_>}

You should also have your service dog socialized, so when out and about with it {if you plan to be}, it won't want to go and say hi to everyone it meets. Unless of course you want it to, then there's no need to correct the behavior. Get it used to sliding doors and other things that may frighten the dog.

I recommend having a small dog that you can carry around, catches less attention therefore less panic attacks, and I find it easier to control the dog. I'm not saying having a big dog would be a huge mistake though =) If you have a panic attack and pass out it would be good for balance.

Remember to have a backup plan, such as comfort food, or anything comforting, like calling your mother/therapist. Because you can't always rely on the dog, just as you can't always rely on your mother/therapist.

Hope I helped~

Congestive heart Failure in my small dog?

I have a 12 year old miniature Schnauzer just diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. They put her on Lasix and xanax for her anxiety. ( she just started them yesterday) Are there any specific Dog foods that would be best for her? What about treats? Any herbal remedies? Also is there anything I can do for her to make her more comfortable? Anything I should talk to her doctor about? Just looking for some info

Any high quality dog food will do. Treats should (as always) be limited. ANY time you give an herbal remedy, discuss with the vet first...some herbs can interfere with prescription medications and cause damage to death. I would assess the dog's condition in a few weeks to a month with the vet. My own dog that went through CHF did extremely well on Enacard. Hopefully the doctor told you about how Lasix can cause VERY frequent urination and sometimes the inability for the dog to hold its urine? If you see any problems at all, discuss with your vet.

Dog Anxiety Remedy Quotes:

A stammering man is never a worthless one. Physiology can tell you why. It is an excess of sensibility to the presence of his fellow creature that makes him stammer. By Thomas Carlyle letter to Ralph Waldo Emerson 17 November 1843 Find out about Dog Anxiety Remedy

Nervous Dogs, How to Help

By the time I get to see a dog whose behaviour is so nervous their quality of life is compromised the dog is reacting to just about anything. It often starts with one issue and then spreads over time. There is one common factor, their owners have rewarded and encouraged the behaviour however unwittingly and the real level is usually lower than it appears.

The basic rule is to always use voice encouragement but never touch until the moment has passed. Use a confident “I'm not bothered by the problem, I'm not scared” voice not a baby voice and confident body language. Try to stand upright, make big hand gestures, look confidently at the dog. Don't stand there thinking “Oh my God, my poor dog”, it doesn't help, you just communicate your own panic and add to the problem.

Dogs can be great actors. They sometimes learn that cowering, shaking and skulking away is a great way of not doing what you asked. Always follow through commands, calmly and gently.

Leaving The House

True separation anxiety (SA) is rare. A dog with SA is a very timid, insecure dog who cannot cope even when you are there. It seems that any dog who barks, chews, messes or hurts themselves when left is automatically diagnosed with SA. True SA is a dog who is clingy, nervous and shows some of the same symptoms even when you are with them. Most of the dogs who have SA are dogs with dominance issues or who are bored, lack enough exercise and stimulation or no manners or training.

If your dog is happy normally, but barks the place down or wrecks it when left alone, think about proper training, games, toys and better exercise. If your dog lacks respect, jumps all over everybody, doesn't obey commands properly and steals your food, it doesn't have SA, it needs training.

When you leave, leave calmly, put the dog in its normal place, say “see you later”, leave it something to do and just go. Don't stand there saying “Please be good, don't chew anything, please be quiet” or you can guarantee they will do exactly that because you make them anxious then leave.

Triggers

If your dog starts to react as soon as you do something that makes it guess you are leaving, desensitizing with no result is the best treatment. So if, for example, picking up your keys sends the dog into a frenzy, leave the keys somewhere obvious. Every time you pass them, pick them up and put them straight down. Ignore the dog and carry on about your business. When you get to the point you can pick them up and get no reaction, praise the dog. Use the same trick with lifting your coat or shoes until the dog hardly bothers.

Start small and stay calm. You are trying to break the association of the first behaviour and the assumption that you are going out.

confidence

If your dog is a very clingy, insecure dog it will never get better if you consistently pander to it. If your dog jumps at loud noises, don't run to it and start picking it up, petting it and sounding anxious yourself. Look at the dog, wave your hand and say “not a problem, look, I'm not bothered” and carry on. Don't ignore it, just look and sound like you don't care. If the dog is afraid of an item, go to it, pick it up, calm, confident voice, say “look, this is fine, not scared” and walk away. Don't take the item to the dog and don't try to force the dog towards it.

Dogs pick up on your signals and high pitched, baby talk sounds like panic. Constant stroking rewards and stimulates the adrenalin so you are not making it better.

Treatment

Your own behaviour is the most successful way forward. Calm assertive body language, saving the real attention for the calm dog moments. Bach Flower Remedies can help a lot in genuine cases of SA and of fear related behaviour but it must be diagnosed properly and the right ones used, do not use Rescue Remedy as a cure all. Don't let your dog live like this, get some professional help.

Is Phosphorus and Ignatia Iamara safe for dogs?

My dog is a rescue and considered to be a "special needs" animal because he suffers severe fear and anxiety. He is not fear-aggressive, just a bundle of nerves.
Someone recommended that I use the following "remedy" to help him cope:

PHOSPHORUS in the 1M potency get it in pellet form....

The dose is 3 pellets once a day for 3 days only then STOP and give it time to work.... GIVE IN MORNING

and

IGNATIA IAMARA in the 1M potency also in pellet form....

The dose is the same 3 pellets once a day for 3 days only then STOP.... GIVE IN EVENING

Has anyone tried this? Is it safe and does it work?

Your best source for the answer to this question would be a holistic vet. Try to find one in your area - try googling "holistic vet" and your city.

Good luck.

Pet Anxiety Wrap Quotes:

If a man harbors any sort of fear it percolates through all thinking damages his personality and makes him a landlord to a ghost. By Lloyd Douglas Find out about Pet Anxiety Wrap

Do You See The 3 Signs Of Cat Heat Stroke?

If you were wearing layers of clothing the whole year round, you'll get a heat stroke too. Your feline friend is prone to heat exhaustion as much as any furry pet in town. Most cat owners neglect to check on their fur balls during the summer because cats are generally independent compared to other pets. So, while your neighbor's pet poodle might get all the pampering in the world, your kitty could already be suffering from a cardiac arrest without your knowledge.

Don't be a bad cat owner-show your pet all the love it deserves. There are three signs of pet heat stroke to look out for in the summer:

Panting

Cats are generally agile animals. This means that they should be more used to rigorous activities compared to a fat Labrador. If your cat begins to show strange signs of heavy breathing, then it's best to give it a nice cool bowl of water. It would help to bring your kitty inside the house for shade, too. The most pampered felines get to stay inside their master's air conditioned bedrooms in the summer. If certain house rules prevent you from bringing your pet indoors, you should at least make sure it has a sufficiently ventilated shade to hide in once the sun gets too intolerable.

Anxiety and Faster heartbeats

Most cats laze around during the daytime, and your furry feline is nocturnal, in every sense of the word. So when starts to get panicky and begins to pace restlessly across the room, you should check for its pulse. If your pet's heart is beating too fast for its own good, think of ways to help your pet cool down. Wrapping your pet in a damp towel is pretty effective. If nothing helps after ten or fifteen minutes, you should call the vet for more instructions.

Dark Red Gums

Your pets are generally wired the same way as you are. When the heat is up, your heart rate goes up too. A higher heart rate means a higher blood pressure, and a higher blood pressure leads to unusually red skin. Unfortunately, your pet, unlike you, is covered in fur, which makes checking for hyperactive blood vessels a little harder. Since your cat's gums are hairless, it's the best place to check if its heart is pumping too much blood. If its gums are extremely red, it's probably already having a heat stroke.

Some preventive measures

Why wait for your pet to suffer from a heatstroke if you can prevent the dreadful from happening? During extremely harsh weathers, it's only right to let your pet stay indoors. Rubbing a damp towel against your pet also keeps its body from overheating.

Your feline friend might not like this idea during colder seasons, but you could also try dipping your cat's paws in a tubful of iced water. Making a bed out of frozen peas for your pet is also a nice summer treat. This way, your pet can cool down without getting icky and wet. Too much heat can also cause cats to be too lethargic to eat or drink. If this happens, get a dropper and feed your kitty by hand.

What I think the most people will benefit from, if you can get them to truly take it in, is canine body language! Most average dog owners don't even realize it exists. Maybe also add in the extreme importance, to the dog, of the owner's body language.

I also think the breed/group traits are super important. Too many people haven't a clue as to why their dogs do what is perfectly natural for that breed. Or why one dog doesn't know to stay out from under grandpa's feet since their other dog knew it! Definitely breed traits!

Sounds fascinating!

The first thing to understand about your anxiety panic disorder, social anxiety disorder or any other form of anxiety disorder is that the symptoms you face are symptoms and not reality. It is important to spot these anxiety attack symptoms so that you can ultimately see it coming on and treat it.

Here are some of the feelings and symptoms that you may experience during an anxiety attack:

· Irrational heightened fear. Although those that face anxiety disorder often have an overall fear and endless amount of worries, during an attack this is heightened and elevated to something much more serious in their minds.
· Pounding heart, racing heart and chest pain.
· Problems breathing, often, you may feel like you have just run a marathon although you have not done much physical activity.
· Feelings like you are losing it, you may feel that your mind is just being overtaken; you can not concentrate or focus.
· You feel physically shaken; your legs are jelly, your stomach hurts, your muscles do not move as you are telling them to. You may even feel numbness, tingling and chills.
· You feel as if you are dying.

Anxiety attack symptoms can be just one or two of these or they can be many more. You should realize or try to realize, when these symptoms are occurring as this can be a helpful signal to you to realize that this is not rational thought.

In anxiety attack symptoms, your body is reacting to the way in which you are thinking. While you should not try to treat your condition alone, you can work with behavioral specialists that will help you to work through the problems effectively. In most cases, people that have anxiety disorders of any type feel as if they just can not seek out the help that they need. While this may be the case, getting through this one event can help you to ease out of the terrible conditions you are facing right now.

Knowing what anxiety attack symptoms are can help you to notice when you need help. Realizing when a loved one is in this situation can be helpful to them as well. Often, the irrational feelings that they are having are very real and very terrifying to them. Getting them the help they need is essential to their own well being.

Anxiety Wrap <h2>Anxiety Wrap Hot Information</h2>
Are you feeling guilty for something this morning?

Guilt Collected

You, me, we, we’re all guilty of something
must be, should be, will be, yes we’re guilty
Doesn’t matter we didn’t eat the apple
we are the residue and therefore guilty

While egos one and two argue we feel remorse
we are damned for sins believed and others relayed
We wrap anxiety around and fend the world
it doesn’t matter we didn’t eat the apple

Yes we are all guilty of something surely
repentance the only salvation they preach
But if that’s the case, in whose light did we come
are we the residue and therefore guilty?

Control does come in many forms to hold
beware the guilty for they walk in packs

I totally get this, being born and raised a Catholic. Guilt is easy to grasp, and salvation is more nuanced: "in whose light did we come?"

I'm not sure I get the use of the verb "fend" in line 7. I think it needs a preposition. Do you mean "fend off," as in push away? So you could maybe do something like "anxiety-wrapped, we fend off the world"

In line 13, I'm not sure "to hold" is working. I know you want 10 syllables, but basically you're stretching out "Control comes in many forms" with the "does" and the "to hold". How about, "Control? Control. It comes in many forms." or something like that.

Anyway, just my two cents. I found it very well thought out.

Cheers.
