Major depression can be a life threatening illness. It is an indiscriminant mental illness that strikes people from all walks of life at anytime.

Major depression is a debilitating mental illness that can make getting up in the morning an ordeal. Getting through the day is next to impossible. Many people who suffer from this disease have had multiple jobs because they cannot make it to work.

Although it strikes indiscriminately, women are twice more likely to be afflicted than men. When major depression is left untreated, it gradually worsens until thoughts of suicide are what the victim feels is their only way to make the pain stop.
This illness is diagnosed in degrees. There are prescription medications that can treat depression and the person afflicted can lead a normal life. It is critical that the person who is taking the medication seek counseling so the medications can be monitored and adjusted if necessary.
The person who suffers from this malady needs to have a support system. They need people who can encourage them to take their medication and seek help when it is necessary.
For a person suffering from this problem, even the slightest event can trigger earth shattering despair. For a person who has not been diagnosed, symptoms include lack of energy, crying, nervousness and thoughts of doing bodily damage to yourself. While everyone has had these thoughts at one time or another in their lives, it is recommended that you seek medical help if you have them often or if depression runs in your family.
If you or someone you love have these symptoms, it is critical that you seek medical attention immediately. This disease strikes quickly and you may not have the time to wait. If the symptoms are treated early they can be controlled. But you need to be diagnosed first.
A person who suffers from major depression can live a normal happy life without the pain. It can be controlled by medication and if taken properly, there are minimal amount of attacks.

The first time I was turned down because I wanted to just go back to work I didnt want to wait on the decision,the second time I was turned down because I hadnt been to my therapist or doctoors long enough so they just turned me down again,this time I have a lawyer,and I was sent to a neuro- psychcologist,because my memory and thinking was horribly off...so thats when I got the major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety diagnoses.
I am a mess,I have so much I want to do as far as helping others,but my depression has been diagnosed as major and for the first time i am agreeing with the diagnoses.
I just wanna know what are my chances?? I truly believe alot of people are applying for disablity benefits now in this economic crisis

It is good you have a lawyer. Keep trying you will get there it just takes time and don't give up.
Work under the table if you have to , in order to survive. or just hit the food banks, crash at friends and family, and homeless shelters until you get it.
Even when you are finally approved you are allowed to work a little....ask your attorney if you could work part-time.

Can a person with bipolar disorder/manic depression get disability?
I filed for disability in march..with diagnosis of panic disorder, severe depression, diastolic dysfunction, diabetes..was turned down! filed for reconsideration and was diagnosed with Bipolar/manic depression. I do not go anywhere. I will drive but as far as goin in place i dont go. I havent been in a store, resturant, etc since dec 2008. I stay home and wont even go to my friends or families homes. Im afraid of havin a severe panic attacks. Those do not feel good. I try to avoid them as much as possible. I have had plenty in my sleep. can someone help me?
I understand your panic disorder. I haven't been able to travel for years because of the horror of panic disorder. You are really bad and you need to get disability. You may have to get some help, since you are not hardly able to leave your home, because this might have to be taken before a Judge in a court of law. I know a lady that has been getting disability for panic disorders for years. She can go around town and just drive a little bit from home. She has been right around her home since 1980. Can't take vacations. I am fortunate that I have been able to work, but I have had to take jobs below me because of my disability. I have a personality disorder and can't hardly stand being with people along with panic attacks and constantly being smothered because I have a fear of the sky.. They bother me so bad that I stay to myself most of the time. So I have to work alone, and sometimes I can barely do that. So I do know what you feel and how restricted you are in what you can or can't do. People who have never suffered with this phobia can not possibly have even an idea. I wish I was normal and could take a trip somewhere. Don't give up on the disability that you so deserve.

Do you believe your diagnosis?
Mine is chronic schizoaffective depressive type. I know I know labels labels labels. There are times when I doubt mine, but when I get the hallucinations or start thinking like a paranoid then I realize that my psychiatrist is probably right. It's really interesting because I've been labeled most of the psychotic disorders out there from psychosis NOS to psychotic depression. I mean does it matter what diagnosis you have? I guess I'm sort of complaining because as I said I have a chronic condition and the meds only take the edge off. Well I just started abilify so maybe that will help, but the pattern that is emerging is that these meds work for a while then they stop working. Any advice? Thanks. I hope I made sense.
Yes. I noticed arbitrary swings in my mood since at least junior high. I guessed the same diagnosis I have now years ago in a journal. I've always known there's something wrong with me and it helps me deal with it for it to have a name. That being said, I'd much rather not have to deal with it at all. I'm sick of the doctors. A Look at Bipolar or Manic Depression
When you are in the manic stage you feel very high, enthusiastic, unable to slow down, and very impulsive .You can have bad judgment and do things that you would never ordinarily do. This can cause severe problems with shame and embarrassment. You become very irritated if anyone suggests you calm down and slow up. You can feel nothing is impossible, have grand ideas, and think you have no limits. Then you enter a depressed period.
Not everyone who is depressed or manic has every symptom described. Some have few symptoms, some many more that aren't even listed. How severe the symptoms are varies from person to person and also varies as to the person's age.
Manic State is described as a person having:
-Abnormal or excessive enthusiasm unusual irritability
-Loss of interest in formerly pleasurable activities
-Decreased interest in sex and difficulty with performance
-Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
-Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
-Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
-Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
-Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
-Restlessness, irritability
-Persistent physical symptoms that don't have a cause.
Here's Mickey's story:
She's 46 and works in the personnel department of a mid sized company. Everyone likes Mickey and they call her 'magic Mickey' when she organizes all the flights and tickets and hotels for conventions. She laughs loud, dyes her hair a bright red, and has so much energy that she makes people tired just watching her. On her job everyone appreciates her 'give more than 100%' job attitude. Suddenly people at work start to notice Mickey is not just talkative, she can't stop talking. She tells her co workers that she thinks she could be president of the company and do a better job. She also is over the top in her flirty behavior with men in the office, telling them they don't know what they are missing, not having her sexually. Finally her boss calls her aside and tells her he thinks something is wrong and she needs to see a doctor. She explodes and slams out of the office, threatening to sue for discrimination. Her husband sees her come home out of control and asks her if she is taking her medications. She has stopped and refuses to take them. Her husband calls their doctor and he tells him to take her to the emergency ward. She has to be hospitalized for a week to get stabilized, be put back on medicine, and get back on an even keel. She feels humiliated that people at the office saw her that way. She wonders if she can go back to work there.
Jake has an equally bad story
He is 67 and sold his tool and die company for a nice profit. He and his wife are set financially and they live in a nice waterfront home in Florida. Jake loves to entertain and does much of the cooking himself. There is nothing he likes more than to have a large group of people to the house for a party. His wife knows that there is another side of Jake that most people never see. He can quickly become depressed and when he is, he turns mean and nasty. He has hit his wife many times throughout the marriage when he is going into a depressive state. She reminds him to take his medication because she knows it will keep him more even, less explosive. They throw a large party for the neighbors and Jake is doing his usual grilling while telling stories to everybody in the vicinity. He starts to get irritated when a new neighbor starts to brag about his new home, how much it cost, how much more he is going to spend. Jake starts to talk over this man but the man has had a few drinks and just keeps going. Jake's wife doesn't like what she sees on Jake's face but there is nothing she can do. Suddenly Jake flips a piece of meat off the grill onto the offending neighbor. The two men actually start to fight and have to be pulled apart. Jake cannot calm down and is screaming and threatening to kill the man. Someone calls the police. Jake pushes an officer and is handcuffed and taken to jail. Suddenly people are looking at him like a wild man who is losing his mind.
If you or someone you care about is suffering from manic depressive type symptoms, you need to get help. This is one type of depression which really is controlled by medication. If you get on the right meds with small side effects you can tolerate, you will have a wonderful life with no extremes.
Remember this. Depression is treatable. Instead of worrying about whether you are depressed, do something about it. Worry is constructive only if you push yourself to change things for the better. Only one in three people who are seriously depressed get help. Make sure you are in the minority group with this one.
How to stop ongoing bipolar dysthymia/mild depression?
I am on a high dose of Lamictal, the stabilizer with the most antidepressant properties.
I am on Lithium to manage the hypomania and augment Lamictal's antidepressant properties.
I take Omega 3 fish oil as an antidepressant supplement.
I take Seroquel and sleeping pills to get a full night's sleep.
I cannot take antidepressants without going manic.
I see my therapist regularly.
I am fairly stable and hold a full-time professional job.
This is a typical problem of med compliant, proactive people with bipolar type II. It sucks, and I'd like to figure out how to make it stop.

I'm not doing NEARLY as well as you, but here are a few ideas -
A lot of times the meds don't work right when you have PMS, or if you are older, getting on towards menopause, there are problems. I keep track when I will have PMS because I know I will be in total relapse at that time. I avoid putting things on my calendar then (which I can do to some extent, because I am on disability for bipolar).
I use a light box, one that's REALLY bright. My doc says for many bipolar people, they get more depressed in the fall/winter. It's best to use it about 1/2 hour in the morning, first thing when you get up. You can get the Sunray, I used that in a mental hospital, and it was very good. Don't get the dinky little lights, they aren't bright enough.
I wrote up a list of happy things to read when I'm down, stuff like a basket of fluffy kittens, the sound of popcorn popping, the scent of jergen's lotion, the feel of snowflakes melting on my face, or the first snowfall on pine trees, that kind of thing. My list is 4 pages long. It helps quite a bit. I also hug my cats and tell my hubby I am needy. I ask for sex when I'm low, even when I don't feel like having it at all, because it actually helps a LOT.
I found that ativan and other benzos, and especially ambien, made me have a LOT of trouble controlling my behavior, and made me very angry all the time, way beyond irritability. So you may want to see if you can get by without those pills. After a couple weeks, they don't work anyway, due to dependence. Research that, if you don't believe me. The reason you get insomnia when you quit them is due to drug withdrawal.
A good websight is bipolarworld.net, and click on ask the doctor. That Dr. Phelp's guy specializes in bipolar and recently wrote a book on Bipolar II, which is his main interest in bipolar, actually. So you will want to read all his stuff. He really emphasizes regular exercise as a mood stabilizer.
Oh, and I'm going to add, when I get busy and don't eat, and my blood sugar gets a little low (I'm dragging a bit), often my mood dives and won't come back up until the next day. so I try to eat regularly and get whole grains. I still screw up, but not very often.

A medical condition, termed depressive disorder, affects the normal function of our brains. They say the depression is the gift of modern lifestyle. It may be true in some cases and may not be so in some other cases. In yet other cases, the depression may be due to life style and other factors. Depressive disorders are many and different and bipolar disorder is one of them. This disorder causes strange swings of the affected person’s mood, verve and the capacity to work.
Medical researchers are still learning the potential root causes of the bipolar disorder. They suspect the disorder may be caused by genetic factors independently and in combination with environmental factors. However we will not proceed further in that direction as the bipolar disorder-symptoms form the theme of this article. This disorder is a condition that creates lifted up manic/hypo-manic and depressed states for extended time and here are the bipolar disorder-symptoms in detail. The bipolar disorder-symptoms may be of two varieties.
The first set of signs is related to mania or what is otherwise referred to as a manic episode. They include: • Euphoria or excessively “high,” mood • Increased physical activity that is, augmented energy, activity, and restiveness. They include: • Sadness, anxiety, or feeling of emptiness • Hopelessness or pessimism • Feelings of guilt, ineptitude, or despondency • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, • Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or of being “slowed down” • Problems related to concentration • Restiveness or irritability • Problems regarding sleep • Problems with respect to appetite • chronic pain or other persistent bodily symptoms without any obvious cause • Thoughts oriented towards committing suicide, death If in excess of five of the above bipolar disorder-symptoms are observed almost a day lasting for a fortnight or more, then it is the sign of depression or depressive episode.
If these symptoms are appeared along with that of mania, it is called mixed state of bipolar disorder. In mixed state, the bipolar disorder-symptoms consist of insomnia, agitation, psychosis, appetite change and suicidal tendency. Simultaneously, the affected person may feel highly energized too. The bipolar disorder-symptoms may include alcohol or drug abuse, problems at school/workplace, and or interpersonal problems and they point to the underlying mood disorders. There is no ensured way to thwart bipolar disorder from occurring. Nevertheless, giving treatment to the person showing the first sign of the disorder may stop it from deterioration.
Is it possible to have a diagnosis of Cyclothymia, Depression AND Bipolar disorder?
My GP wrote a report on me stating that I had all three conditions at the same time. I don't believe it's possible to have even two of them at once. I believe Cyclothymia is a less severe form of Bipolar, and Depression when combined with hypomania is a symptom of Cyclothymia, not a disorder in itself.
Cyclothymia is in fact a mild form of bipolar. I have known people to go from having Cyclothymia disorder to progress onto having bipolar. Depression is part of bipolar so can not be classed as a separate disorder. hypo-mania is also a sign of bipolar type 2 disorder. You could have what they call bipolar "NOS" (not otherwise specified. this is when you don't come under any of the other types such as bipolar l bipolar ll or Cyclothymic disorders. take care good luck

Children's Health - Brain Development Disorder - Definition and Types
I. Definition
A neurodevelopmental disorder is defined as an impairment of the growth and development of the central nervous system. It effects the child's brain function in controlling emotion, learning ability and memory as well as social interaction. Today, one in six children is diagnosed with some forms of development and behaviour disorder. It is advised for parent to have their child diagnosed early, if they found that their child is withdrawing from social world, failing to learn the basic communication skill or struggle with emotional regulation, etc.. otherwise, a child may be at risk of becoming serious lifelong disability.
II. Most common types of brain development disorder
1. Autism disorder
Autism is one most common form of brain development disorder and one in 166 child is diagnosed with some forms of autism. It is defined as medical condition in which a child has some of the following impairments
a) Speech b) Social and communication skills c) Limited interest d) Repetitive behaviour
2. Asperger syndrome
Children with Asperger syndrome has no problem with speech development, but have very poor social and communication skills. they may talk a lot, but fail to focus and keep up with the subject. they also have a very narrow interest as they may talk about only one single subject for months or years. Some children with Asperger syndrome may also engage in repetitive behaviour such as flagging hand.
3. Pervasive Development disorder
Children who have developed some or mild forms of autism are considered to have pervasive development disorder. Although some symptoms or important signs of autism are missing, they are likely to diagnoses with autism or Asperger syndrome later in their life.
4. Rett Syndrome
Rett syndrome effects mostly girl, is defined as a condition of which children lose social and communication skills as well as purposely use of their hand. It may also accompany with symptoms of hand repetitive and seizures.
5. Childhood integrative disorder
Children with childhood integrative disorder may gradually lose their language, social communication and self help skills between the period of 2 -4 years old.
6. Sensory integration dysfunction
Sensory integration dysfunction is a condition of which a child fails to react to the information collected from the scene, caused by abnormal brain function in processing information. Typically, most children with sensory integration syndrome may be under sensitive in reaction to pain or noise or over sensitive in reaction to certain environments such as noise, bright light or often both.
7. Auditory processing disorder
Auditory processing disorder is defined as damaging of the neurological structures and pathways of sound perception, therefore children with this disorder are able to hear sounds but have trouble to interpret what they hear.
8. Expressive language disorder
This is defined as a condition of which the children have a limited vocabulary and difficulty in recalling words or expressing themselves by using complex sentences.
9. Speech apraxia
It is caused by the broken down of the inter-reaction between the brain in controlling the speech muscles during speech. Children with speech appraxia know what they want to say, but can not speak through their voice and their words are difficult to understand.
10. Attention deficit hyperactivity
ADHD is defined as psychological condition of which a child has a poor attention skill, impulsive behavior and hyper-activity. The symptoms may appear to be innocent but annoying nuisances to other children. It effects between 3-5% of children globally and most of them are diagnosed later in their childhood life.
11. Attention deficit disorder
Unlike ADHD, children with attention deficit disorder are diagnosed only with symptoms of poor attention skill and impulsive behaviour. Although, the symptoms may appear only annoying to other children, it can inflict the learning ability of the children in the class.
12. Mental retardation
Metal retardation is considered as a generalized disorder. Children with mental retardation normally fail to adapt or adjust to another type of behaviour or situation. They also have a below average IQ ( 70 or lower) and difficulty in performing routine activity.
13. Hearing impairment
Hearing impairment is characterized as a child have a reduce of the ability to detect or understand sounds. Since the children can not hear well, it may interfere with normal progress of social and communication skills causing disruptive behaviour.
14. Seizure disorder (Epilepsy)
Since the normal function of neurons is to generate electrochemical impulses to act on other neurons, glands, and muscles to produce human thoughts, the damage or abnormal function of neurons in case of seizure disorder interferes with sensations, emotions, and behavior, resulting in delay or loss of social and communication skills.
15. Nonverbal learning disorder
The problems of the nonverbal learning disorder are not speech and memory, they may seem normal when they talk and understand what they hear, but in abstracted thinking such as non-verbal problem-solving, daily change of routine and social skills.
16. Traumatic brain injury
Traumatic brain injury normally caused by physical impacts such as car accident or lack of oxygen circulated in their body for a certain amount of time that damage certain areas of the brain in controlling speech, thinking, behaviour and social skills.
17. Fragile X syndrome
Fragile X syndrome is defined as a genetic defect. Children with this syndrome have difficult to control the physical, intellectual, emotional and behavioural aspects in their daily activity as resulting of inherited cause of mental retardation.
18. Tuberous sclerosis
This another type of genetic disease, which causes tumor to be growth in the brain and other organ, leading to seizure, delay development, behaviour problem and sometimes mental retardation.
19. William syndrome
William syndrome is a genetic defect, caused by a deletion of about 26 genes from the long arm of chromosome. Children with William syndrome appear to have unusual language skill and eager for social interaction, but can also be mental retardation and heart problems.
20. Angelman syndrome
This is a condition caused by deletion or inactivation of genes on the maternally inherited chromosome 15. Children with this type of syndrome have severe mental retardation that effect their intellectual and interfere with normal development. The syndrome also accompanies with unexplained smiling and laughing.
21. Prader-Willi syndrome
Prader-Will syndrome is also another genetic defect caused by missing or partial missing of the seven genes on chromosome 15. Children who was born with Prader-Willi syndrome have delay development and feeding difficulty in infancy and develop compulsive eating and food obsession after age one.
22. Phenylketonuria
Phenylketonuria is a genetically metabolic disorder caused by deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase, leading to accumulation of phenylalanine, interfering with development of the brain, causing severe brain damage, mental retardation if it is not controlled by a special diet in their early life.
23. Early-onset childhood bipolar disorder
It is also known as manic-depression. Children who are diagnosed with this disorder have symptoms of frequent mood swing, alternate thinking and behaviour .
24. Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized as a children life is disrupted by unwanted, unnecessary and repetitive thought, as well as an overwhelming need to do certain thing compulsively such as washing their hand many times a day, drinking a cup water before leaving home, etc.
25. Generalized anxiety disorder
It is a kind of anxiety disorder. Children with generalized anxiety disorder always worry about something, restlessness and fear without reason.
26. Selective mutism
Selective mutism is defined as another type of anxiety in which a child who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak or becomes silent in certain situations or in front of specific people.
27. Oppositional defiant disorder
Oppositional defiant disorder is defined as an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, disobedient, hostile and defiant behaviour toward parent and authority.
28. Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder association with streptococcal infection ( PANDAS)
It is defined as a condition in which the immune system attack the child central nervous system, leading to behaviour, thinking and movement problems.
29. Reactive attachment disorder
Reactive attachment disorder is defined as an inappropriate social behaviour caused by severe early experiences of neglect, abuse of parent or caregivers between the ages of six months and three years.
30. Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is described as a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality caused by inability of a child to cope with the change in the internal or external environment, leading to hallucination and delusion.

I have the definitions but not real sure about the points of assesment and managment as an EMT-B.
I have answers as what I think it is but I want to know the real answers...
I'm an NREMT-B in Oregon.
Firstly, the EMT-B scope of practice doesn't cover "management of mental illnesses." Your scope of practice will basically be recognition of a patient with mental problems and how to address and handle the patient in a pre-hospital setting.
Also, I'd challenge the instructor as to what they're thinking here - not even EMT-P's can "diagnose" a patient, which is precisely what is needed to tell differences between many of the listed disorders.
In a pre-hospital setting, if a patient presents themselves as either emotionally or mentally disturbed, there is ONE set of guidelines. We don't diagnose the specific disorder - we handle the patient based on their signs and symptoms at the time of our arrival.
Things to remember: Don't play along with them - be direct and honest. 'No, I don't see the spiders, there aren't any here." Be sure to have additional help available before you approach a mentally or emotionally disturbed patient.
In your PCR - your assessment of a patient will not list a diagnosis such as "Patient is suffering from PTSD." or "patient has panic disorder."
If you have a patient who DOES have a history of PTSD, even then, your assessment would read something like "Patient suffers from mental disturbances, possibly from prior medical diagnosis of PTSD."
No EMT in the world can show up on someone's doorstep, watch them for 5 minutes and go, "Yep, that guy is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia." It's ludicrous to even suggest that. What you OBSERVE and what you KNOW should be put on a PCR. Your scope of practice does NOT cover you managing any of these patients beyond being straight, honest, calming and respectful.
Don't lie, don't play along, don't try to diagnose or tell them what's wrong with them. If they appear to be a threat to themselves or others, you can ask them to go to the hospital with you and get checked out. If they are altered, or under age, then you can insist they go - but make sure you have the cops around to help and serve as witnesses.
EMT-B's are good for basic life support only. We aren't doctors or super heros. We manage airways, treat for shock, give cpr, supply limited medicines and TRANSPORT.
If you need clinical definitions of those conditions, go to any of the online medical sites using a google search.
Just remember! EMT's do NOT diagnose! If you can't diagnose a specific mental problem, YOU CAN'T TREAT It EITHER!
Ask your teacher if they've ever been able to diagnose one of these in the field, and if they answer 'sure" ask them if they're sure "diagnose" is the right answer, because on the national exams, it ISN'T.

Unfortunately most people are regularly poisoning their own bodies by feeding themselves a steady diet of junk food. When you do this your body gets very out of whack. These distress signals are misinterpreted as anxiety…eventually this anxiety builds up until you snap… then you have a panic attack.
2) Work on curing panic attacks by balancing your mind and body. The easiest way to balance yourself out is to participate in some sort of a physical exercise regimen. There have been a ton of studies done about this… and they all show that exercise is great for lowering your anxiety. Less anxiety means less of a chance of panic attacks.
When you exercise your heart rate increases, you start sweating, and you start to breathe quickly. Does this sound familiar? These are probably some of the symptoms you suffer from when you have a panic attack… So… exercise will help your body get used to being in a hyper state. When you are used to it… the feelings you get; the ones that usually cause your panic attacks will not affect you as drastically. Your body becomes much more accustomed to the feelings of a panic attack.
Curing panic is easy if you are willing to put some work into it. There are tons of options available to you… you just need to find what works the best for you. Be stubborn about beating panic attacks and you will be successful. Make sure to set goals and reward yourself when you attain them… you deserve it… and it will help you in curing panic attacks.

You most likely will not giggle and laugh. The gas will just relax you and give you kind of a floaty feeling. Allergies to the nitrous oxide are extremely rare. You are also breathing in at least 3 liters of oxygen along with the nitrous. Good luck

Most Panic attacks are caused by imaginary fears, "what if? that can plague our minds. Most of the concerns that threaten to overwhelm our ability face are greatly exaggerated or highly unlikely. Examination of these negative feelings and lack of connection with reality is an important part disprove the danger your body believes it is in.
The other important part of this process is to fill your mind with positive statements that support strengthening your ability to cope with any situation you are in.
Self-esteem and confidence are important weapons in your fight against panic. Think about some positive general statements, strengthen self-esteem that you can fill your mind with periods stress.
Here are some examples:
"I handled difficult situations before and I can do it again"
"I have many people I can count on me to help get through this"
"I am smart and capable and can do anything if I put too much "
"Difficult situations have made me stronger, and so before this"
"Open the door to a new opportunity and walk through "
Positive statements can be anything that makes you feel good about yourself. Make a list today and add that you encounter difficult situations and use it to overcome your negative feelings. Little things build inertia to make big life changes.

Kundalini Energy and Panic Attacks
A disorder called Panic attacks will affect approximately 1.7% adults which relates to about 3 million people in the United States today, (medicinenet com). Unfortunately, the onset of panic attacks is most prevalent in teenagers 15 to 19 years old.
Panic attacks are a type of anxiety disorder that is sudden and unexpected and can be disabling. It is also often unprovoked, however, it is believed that panic attacks are brought on by a major life stress but can be inherited in some instances. It is not known exactly what triggers a panic attack.
During the 1970's, those experiencing panic attacks and sought treatment for some of the symptoms as in feeling a possible heart attack, extreme sense of fear, an overwhelming feeling of losing their mind, difficulty breathing, nausea and dizziness were often misdiagnosed in those days.
Physicians thought more along the lines of mental illness instead of an anxiety disorder. Sometimes episodes of panic attacks would be frequent and other times not quite so often. This reinforced the idea that it was all in their imagination for physicians. This in turn often made the patient reluctant to seek help and suffered quietly.
Recent advances have helped the situation. Treatments include psychotherapy and medications or both. Some of the well known medications are Klonopin, Paxil and Xanax.
It is important to work with your physician for these treatments. However, a new form of treatment is emerging.
This treatment is called Kundalini Awakening. This treatment also helps depression.
This is basically a rich source of psychic energy in the unconscious. Being described as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine, Classical Literature called it Hatha Yoga Kundalini.
It is important to note that this is how yogins explain Kundalini, it's network of channels and chakras, or micro motions in the brain. And, a latent form of spiritual energy, or Kundalini energy, lies at the base of the spine.
This energy is released by realization or spiritual advancement. Meditation, religion or spiritual practices releases this energy.
The very symptoms of a panic attack are the symptoms of Kundalini Awakening. Historically, the terrifying rush of feelings people experience, have tried to be stopped, either by the person themselves, or physicians with medications.
Through the concept of Kundalini Awakening, these so-called panic attacks are actually manifestations of the micro-vibrations that are being stimulated. Instead of fighting these symptoms, it's important to give in to them and let them flow. In this way, recovery is then possible as there will be no fear of the symptoms.
Meditation is a way of releasing those fears. Understanding that internal energy is causing the heart palpitations and other symptoms, the patient will not fear they are dying or freaking out.
As the Kundalini Awakening is happening or just after an awakening, the person will feel a sense of wonder, strong feelings of peace, emotional joy or reverence, a strong feeling of love or contentment and a heightened sense of consciousness. Some have even reported seeing a white light.
Basically it is considered that all Yoga is Kundalini Yoga, but specific terms like Kundalini Yoga will be used by some individuals. No matter, because it the end you are still awakening the kundalini with yoga.

does klonopin work just as good as xanax for panic attacks?
i have severe panic attacks and was diagonose with panic disorder, i stress alot, i cant sleep, i worry 24/7 i was takin 1-3mg of xanax a day and that was a very very good drug to release anxiety,and it made me sleep very well, but its also very addicting, i have klonopins but ive never taken them before there 1mg pills, and i was just wondering if these work just as well as xanax, like when i have a panic attack i take a xanax and it goes away within 30 mins will the klonopins do this also?? thanks for any info on this!

Panic Attacks, Anxiety Disorder, and other fears and phobias can affect our lives in many ways. Various areas can take a noticeable change such as our health, happiness, our professional life and jobs. What are some of the things we should know about these?
We can start with our health and happiness. Panic attacks typically do not cause damage to our health directly. It can do so in other indirect ways however. Examples could be insomnia, depression, and potentially lowering the immune system. Some of these things directly tie in with our happiness.
