Ptsd - Treating Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder With Hypnotherapy

Most of us experience trauma of one kind or another during our lifetime. It just seems built into existence. Indeed research suggests that from 50% to 90% of us will have to cope with trauma at one time or another.

Psychological trauma is the result of experiences that leave the person feeling overwhelmed and somehow unable to cope with and fully process the feelings and emotions produced by those experiences.

With trauma, the subconscious mind has been shocked by an event, or a series of events, and this has profoundly affected the functioning of the individual.

Powerful though it may be for the traumatised individual, on a psychological level the experience itself is somehow less important than the individual's perception and inner response to that experience.

This explains why a similar event may very well be shrugged off by one person yet creates real difficulty in another. What may be a traumatic experience for one may not be traumatic for another.

Trauma itself can happen at any time on the life journey.

It may take place in childhood, and occur as a result of experiencing or witnessing psychological or physical abuse, or extreme poverty, for example, and it can leave the child traumatised well into adulthood.

Or the trauma may have happened later in life, having its origins in abuse, accident, violence, crime, war, death or natural disaster.

Difficult though trauma may be, around 8% of the population will develop the more devastating form and symptoms of trauma known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

Left untreated, PTSD can have truly dire consequences for the individual, seriously affecting his or her relationships and ability to function on a work or an interpersonal level.

PTSD often results from an experience or experiences that threatened real physical harm. Sometimes, however, it can be caused by psychological and emotional trauma where there was no actual implication of physical harm.

Very often, though, it combines aspect of both of these.

While Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is in fact a chronic and severe emotional response to trauma, it differs from traumatic stress or combat stress in that it is usually much more intense and not at all transitory in nature.

In the past, PTSD was also known as shell shock, battle fatigue, and post traumatic stress syndrome.

It isn't necessary to have been in a war setting to experience PTSD, however, any real shock to the system - such as a car accident or a death, drug addiction or sexual assault - can bring it about.

Regardless of the cause, the trauma symptoms that result are very real and distressing for the person unfortunate enough to experience them.

Those suffering from this kind of trauma may experience chronic and acute anxiety, anger, disturbed sleep, disruptive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares. Often they find it very difficult to talk about the events that caused the trauma.

Because of their disturbing nature, they find it difficult or impossible to effectively deal with and integrate these things on the subconscious level of the mind.

And this is where skilfully applied transformational hypnotherapy can be enormously useful, providing a trauma treatment that can lead to a full trauma recovery.

Working with a professional and highly skilled transformational hypnotherapist, the subconscious mind can be taught to re-process the traumatic experiences of the past so that the damage becomes neutralised and undone.

The fact is that, despite the fearful expectations and beliefs instilled during the traumatic experience itself, the person did survive. He or she did in fact make it through.

With the correct trauma therapy the actual facts of the traumatic experience remain, but the perception and the psychological disruptions once caused by those facts are forever altered.

Real and effective trauma treatment requires that the individual come to terms with what has happened so that he or she is then able to then let it go and move on with their life.

Of course, letting go does not mean that the traumatised person has to forget what has happened.

Yet it does very often mean that the person has to be helped to forgive any aggressor or any individual who may have been actively involved in the traumatic experience.

This is not for any religious reasons. Neither is it through any kind of altruism. It is simply because failure to do this simply keeps the person in bondage to the past, maintaining and supporting the damage - the continuing trauma stress, the ongoing emotional and mental trauma.

It needs to be stressed that forgiveness is for the traumatised person. It is not necessarily for the person or people who may have been responsible for causing the trauma. Indeed, very often the person or persons responsible for this remain forever unaware of the forgiveness.

But it is through real and meaningful forgiveness that the person is changed, released and set free. With the guidance of transformational hypnotherapy, the individual is shown how to forgive the past and in so doing heal and move on with their life.

If you or someone you care about is suffering from the truly devastating and debilitation effects of trauma, there really is something that can be done about it.

Working with a properly qualified and experienced transformational hypnotherapist you can put the nightmare of trauma behind you and move on with the life that has been put on hold.

With the right kind of help, you really can experience true trauma recovery and set yourself free of the experiences of the past.

How does post traumatic stress disorder effect war veterans?

i have to write a paper on post traumatic stress disorder, and how it impacts iraq and vietnam veterans. so i really nee some help looking for articles, and some ideas, okay so please help me out guys

well first off, everyone can get post traumatic stress from anything, its all mental, and i have it to be honest. Its not something you can control and its not something that is left unnoticed. You often catch yourself going through random flashbacks of a stressful situation. like I've noticed that when Im playing a video game, doesnt matter which game, but i was playing it and all of a sudden i was thinking about the stressful time that caused the post traumatic stress. and its like you re-live it temporarily, but some time had gone by because i had died on my game and my little sister had come in and asked me what i was doing. it causes bad dreams and makes you want to not sleep. depending on how bad it is. it just overall isnt something that is tolerable for very long

Anxiety - What is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder ?

Post-traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD is a form of anxiety that can occur after the exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm happened or was threatened.

Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include:

- Survivors of devastating earthquakes
- People that witness traumatic events
- Survivors of several accidents on the sea or air
- Physical and sexual abuse or crimes
- Major changes in someone's life
- Severe accidents car or plane accidents
- Violent personal assaults
- Natural disasters or human causes disasters (bombs)
- People taking part in terrorist rescues
- People affected by racism
- Military combat actions
- PTSD often occurs in soldiers attending wars
- Birth of a child can often cause PTSD (moms usually experience anxiety after birth and even during pregnancy).
- Any type of family violation
- Death of a loved one
- Being fired from work
- Divorce

Usually all the family members of the victim are disposed to develop post traumatic stress disorder. PTSD can occur in people of any age, and that includes children and adolescents.

symptoms of PTSD

Many PTSD sufferers repeatedly experience flashbacks, memories, nightmares, or frightening thoughts, these symptoms are most likely to happen when they are exposed to objects or objects that remind them of their trauma.

Common Symptoms :

- General Anxiety Disorder
- Irritability or anger
- Intense guilt or fear for no apparent reason
- Emotional numbness and sleep problems
- Severe depression
- Mood Swings

Lets have a closer look at the most common physical symptoms in (PTSD) :

- Weak Immune System
- Dizziness and numbness
- Chest pain
- Discomfort in other parts of the body, muscular tension
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Long term headaches

Sufferers often are treated for other causes than anxiety disorder. It happens often that sufferers think they have heart diseases, muscular problems or lack of minerals and vitamins.

Post-traumatic anxiety disorder can only be diagnosed if the symptoms last for more than one month. Symptoms do not occur immediately after the trauma, it usually varies, but they are most likely to occur within 3 months, it varies from one to another.

However some people recover in less than six months, others experience these symptoms a lot longer. Often PTSD may become chronic, and general anxiety disorder occurs. It can last for years if not treated in time.

There are lots of treatments available now, such as one to one coaching programs, which are completely natural and guaranteed, medication does help but they usually have bad side effects, they may reduce the level of anxiety, but in most of the cases it is not the cure.

General Statistics of PTSD

Studies have shown that 6.2 million adults in the US ages 18 to 58, approximately 4.6 percent of the people between these ages, have PTSD, the number is continuing to grow due to the high level of stress in urban areas. There are more women than men suffering from PTSD.

Treatment

One successful treatment that has worked for more than 40,000 people already is the panic Away program which is a one-to-one coaching, complete natural anxiety program mainly based on relaxation techniques and ways to master your thoughts to overcome PTSD and anxiety.

Depression Tests: A Great Help in Diagnosing Depression Disorders

Depression tests are given by health providers in order to assess the level of depression of the patient. Different Depression Tests vary not only in their set of questions but on their assessment procedures as well.

Depression tests are grouped as self-test questionnaires given by health providers. There are several self tests for determining a person's level of depression.

• Self-Tests

Zung Depression Scale - This is a 10 minute screening test with 20 questions. This is for people who experienced symptoms in the past 2 weeks. Scoring includes 50-69 common range for depression and 70+ for severe depression.

Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) - This test has a total of 20 questions. It was developed by Lenore S. Radloff for the assessment of depression symptoms for the past week. This also tracks the progress, on a weekly basis, in a short form. Depression is present when there are a 16+ point gained. This is also equivalent to 10+ points in short form of.

Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) - This is for adults. It is screening test with 30 questions and a short form of 15 questions. Scores indicates; 10-19 = for Mild Depression, 20-30 = for Severe Depression. For the Short Form, 4-10 = Mild Depression, 10-14 = Severe Depression.

Some of the detailed self-assessment depression tests are:

1. The National Mental Health Association Depression Screening
2. Mayo Clinic Depression Assessment
3. The Wakefiled Self-Report Questionnaire on Depression

• Free Depression Tests Online

Anxiety and Depression Screening Test - These are screening questions for assessing anxiety disorders as a mental illness.

Goldberg Depression Questionnaire - This is designed by Dr. Ivan Goldberg. It consists of 18 questions. It can be answered with the use of a scale that responds to their feelings. Scoring comparison are: 54+ for Severely Depressed, 36-53 for Moderate to Severe, 22-35 for Mild to Moderate, 18-21 for Borderline Depressed, 10-17 for Possible Mild Depression, 0-9 for Likely Not Depressed.

Wakefield Depression Questionnaire - This is composed of 12 questionnaires which can assess signs of depression at the moment you are answering it. A score of 15+ points needs a care of a mental health professional.

• Tests Given By Health Care/Mental Health Professionals

Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) - This is commonly used by health providers. This has about 21 multiple test questions that can assess a patient for the past two weeks who needs further treatment. The higher the score, the more severe the depression is.

The Depression-Arkansas Scale (D-ARK) - This brief instrument developed test is made by Dr. G. Richard Smith. It has 11 questions that can assess disorders for the past 4 weeks. It is categorized by: 0-8 minimal, 9-12 mild, 13-8 moderate and 9+ severe.

Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) - This depression screening test has about 10 questions which can assess the last 7 days, for further evaluation. 9+ points indicates a suicidal tendency and 1+ point for further care assessment via health providers.

Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) - This has a total of 21 questions that can assess severe symptoms. This is handed by health professionals for proper monitoring. Severe indicates a high score.

Cornell Dysthymia Rating Scale (CDRS) - This test assesses dysthymia symptoms. It has about 20 test questions.

Depression Tests are designed to determine the risk of developing a depressive disorder. The test is a series of questions which concerns the daily habits and mood swings. This can help identify symptoms for more evaluation and can only be done by professionals.

Depression tests are now on the tip of our hands offers instant free results. Aside from this, it can be done with confidential screening nowadays. The National Mental Association even started its web based tests so as to lower the risk of people not seeking help.

Although the disorder is highly treatable, The American psychiatric Association states that eighty to ninety percent can be treated effectively with the help of depression testing. Once the testing is done, the report and personalized interpretation will pass through medical professionals for proper treatment.

Depression Tests is an early warning signal of the disorder. The best way to help a person is to undergo different tests so as to manage the stage of depression before it becomes full-blown. The type of depression will depend on the treatment given to the patient.

Symptoms of depression include the following:

• loss of activity interest
• sad mood
• changes in body weight and appetite
• less sleep or oversleep
• loss of energy
• agitation
• inappropriate guilt
• concentration difficulty
• suicide attempts
• and a feeling of worthlessness

Other warning signals include low motivation, extended fatigue and chronic frustration.

Depression Tests are not intended as the official diagnosis or a medical treatment substitute. This only serves as the primary route for the recommendation of a patient, especially for future plans of diagnosis and treatments. Treatment would include:

• Antidepressant medications
• Psychotherapy
• Or both

Aside from this, a referral to a good psychologist or psychiatrist would ease these depression problems. Thus, in order to effectively carry out these tests, doctors do a background check on the patient, particularly for past depressive episodes. Observing different situations is also part of the diagnosis. This is where the doctors can identify if the patient is suffering from emotional or physical depression.

Manic Depression/Bipolar?

I am doing a research project for my Health 250 class (Wellness.) We are supposed to choose a disease or conditional that we find interesting or that has impacted our lives in a personal way. I am doing bipolar disorder/manic depression, as I am bipolar type 2 and struggle immensely on a day to day basis with the realities of the disorder, and my SEVERELY bipolar type 1 uncle committed suicide several years ago.

Anyway, I obviously know on a personal level what bipolar disorder type 2 is, but I don't know much about type 1, cyclothemia, and that stuff.

If you have ANY statistics and/or information to share, that'd be awesome. Personal experiences are also a huge help!

Thanks!

ANYONE? Please?

Well, no personal experience to go off of. No personal knowledge either. The best I can possibly do to help is internet research.

Bipolar Depression Types Quotes:

Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. By Eleanor Roosevelt Find out about Bipolar Depression Types

Depression – Types and symptoms

Clinical depression goes by many names -- depression, "the blues," biological depression, major depression. But it all refers to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months at a time (not just a passing blue mood), accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past.

psychiatrists estimate that one in four women and one in ten men can expect to develop depression during their lifetime; depression affects at least one in 50 children under 12 and one in 20 teenagers.

Symptoms

Generally, the symptoms of depression include:

• Feeling sad, hopeless and despairing

• A loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities

• Loss of appetite or weight

• Loss of sex drive

• Sleeping problems, such as an inability to get to sleep or early waking

Types of Depression

Psychotic Depression:

sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.

Melancholic Depression

Is a more severe depression than non-melancholic depression and is primarily caused by biological factors. It is an uncommon type of depression, affecting only around 1-2% of the population and roughly the same number of males and females. It can occur on its own (unipolar) or as part of Bipolar Disorder.

Major Depression

An individual with major depression feels a profound and constant sense of hopelessness and despair.

Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is when a person has mild and alternating mood swings of elation and depression occurring over a long time period. Because the mood swings are mild, and the elation is often enjoyable, frequently people with cyclothymic disorder do not seek medical help.

The periods of elation and depression can last for lengthy periods, such as a few months. Often, a person with cyclothymic disorder has a relative with bipolar disorder, or they may develop bipolar disorder themselves.

Psychotic depression –

A depressed mood which includes symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you (paranoia) and having delusions.

Non-melancholic – in this case the depression is not melancholic, or, put simply, not primarily biological. Instead, it has to do with psychological causes, and is very often linked to stressful events in a person’s life, alone, or in conjunction with the individual’s personality style.

Non-melancholic depression is the most common of the three types of depression. People with non-melancholic depression experience:

• a depressed mood for more than two weeks

• social impairment

treat depression and bipolar?

I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 bipolar, mainly sever depression with lack of sleep as the main side affect of my manias. Since I have just recently been diagnosed, they are still working on finding the right dose of medicines for me. I am currently on Abilify and Zoloft. What are nonmedicinal ways to make myself feel better while waiting for the medicines to take over and/or ways to enhance the affects of the medicines? Any advice on how to treat/beat/feel better with depression would also be helpful. Thanks.

First, you should cut down on your sugar intake. Excessive sugar can help cause depression, nervous anxiety and spurts of energy followed by extreme fatigue. Caffeine products (such as coffee, non-herbal tea, cola, and some medications), cigarettes and alcoholic beverages may also contribute to nervous anxiety, depression and highs and lows of energy.

L- tyrosine has been effective for many people in reducing or eliminating depression in very short order (often in less than one hour! Take 100 to 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach.

Eat foods with lots of omega-3 fatty acids. Research studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help symptoms of depression as well as bipolar disorder. For people who do not like fish, fish oil supplements are available in health food stores.

Eat chocolate! Natural dark chocolate with little or no sugar that is. The natural occurring substance in chocolate called PEA, for short, has been found to elevate endorphin levels and act as a natural antidepressant.

Oregano may ease that depressed, heavy-hearted feeling.

If you have a juicer, whip up half a glass of watercress and a half a glass of spinach. Throw in some carrots to make the juice sweeter. Then, bottoms up and spirits up!

Eat 2 ripe bananas a day to chase the blues away. Bananas contain the chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine, which are believed to help prevent depression.

While running a warm bath, prepare a cup of chamomile tea. Add the used tea bag to the bath, along with a new one. If you use loose chamomile, wrap the herb in cheesecloth before putting it in the bathtub to avoid a messy cleanup. Once the bath is ready, take your cup of tea into the bath with you and relax in the tub.

To lighten a heavy heart, drink saffron tea and/or thyme tea that has been sweetened with honey.

Sniffing citrus essential oils every hour you're awake may help you get out of a funk. You can buy lemon or orange oil at a health food store. Do NOT take the oils internally.

Cheer yourself up by wearing rose colors - pinks and scarlets. The orange family of colors are also picker-uppers.

Making love can help people overcome feelings of depression.

If you're mildly depressed, simply change your physiology and your emotions will follow suit. In other words, do the physical things you do when your happy - and you'll feel happy. Smile! Laugh! Jump up and down! Sing! Dance! Get dressed up!

Juices seem to be calming to the nerves. Throughout the day, sip apple, pineapple, prune, grape or cherry juice. Make sure the juice has no added sugar or preservatives, and drink it at room temperature, not chilled.

Chop a large onion into very small pieces and add a tablespoon of honey. Eat half the mixture with lunch and the other half with dinner. Onions contain prostaglandin, which is proven to have stress-relieving effect.

St John's Wort - for mild to moderate depression, this herb lives up to its hype. More than 40 scientific studies have verified the traditional use of this herb for depression. It works as well as prescription drugs and has significantly fewer side effects. In all the studies though it took up to 2 weeks to have any effect. In some people it can take up to a month. Typical dosage: 900 mg of capsules standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin per day in divided doses, with meals (including a dose at bedtime if you are suffering from insomnia)

Oats - This is the same plant that goes into your morning oatmeal. It is a wonderful tonic for the nervous system, having generalized nourishing and soothing qualities. The plant is traditionally used not only for depression, but also for anxiety, stress, fatigue, and debility.

When buying dried oats for tea, look for pale green to yellow seeds, rather than something that looks like straw. Typical dosage: 3 cups of tea per day (steep 1 Tbsp of dried seeds in 1 cup of how water for 10 - 15 minutes.

Lavender - This beautiful, fragrant herb has a gentle relaxing and nourishing effect on the nervous system, while lifting the spirits and easing depression. It promotes refreshing sleep as well. It's essential oil can be applied to the body, inhaled, or added to bath water.
Typical dosage: 1 cup 3 times per day (steep 1 tsp of flowers in 1 cup of hot water for 5 minutes)

Gingko - This amazing herb is beneficial for treatment of the cardiovascular and nervous system. It enhances blood supply to the brain and improves nerve cell function. It enhances memory and other intellectual functions. Gingko can be an excellent treatment for depression especially in the elderly. Typical dosage: 40 - 60 mg of standardized extract capsules 3 times a day.

Depression Natural Treatments Quotes:

Many of our fears are tissue-paper-thin and a single courageous step would carry us clear through them. By Brendan Francis Find out about Depression Natural Treatments

Natural Treatment for Acne, Acne cure Tips

Acne occurs when the natural oils that the skin produces gets clogged in the pores of the skin. Normally, acne is prevalent in the onset of puberty when the body starts to produce hormones, it has also been known to be a problem for women during pregnancy. Since acne is a problem for people world wide, there are many forms of treatment, products and medications on the market.

You can get apple cider vinegar for your acne, rosacea treatments from your local supermarket or health food store. Ideally you should purchase organic apple cider vinegar, as this has more of the vital nutrients contained within, but it will be slightly more expensive.

If you have blackheads on your skin, then you can use a range of natural treatments in order to help deal with them and prevent others from forming. One of the most common natural blackhead treatments is similar to a skin exfoliate that many women use for cosmetic purposes. These are great devices as they help the skin to shed the old skin cells that build up over some time. You should buy a few of these skin peels and try them for yourself.

Natural acne treatments are becoming more and more popular with the passing of each year, and for good reason; there is strong demand. But why is there a demand for alternative acne treatments? Because people have grown wary of the mainline acne treatments that list more chemicals as ingredients than you can find under your kitchen sink. This is where natural acne treatments come in.

There are also many people that admit to not understanding the underlying causes of acne. This creates a problem when trying to find a cure. Most physicians know about the symptoms and how to treat them, but they still don't understand what's going on internally to cause acne to be there.

People with acne tend to be more depressed and unhappy. People can be cruel calling you names and teasing you for having those red spots on your face. It greatly affects self-esteem and to some people especially teenagers, acne can affect their love life and social life. Finding a natural treatment for your acne will definitely boost your self confidence and will bring a lot of changes in your life.

Homeopathy is a natural mode of medical practice that makes use of natural substances like herbs, minerals and even venomous materials to formulate remedies for various types of diseases. Acne, in both adults and teenagers, can be effectively overcome by the employment of the homeopathic mode of treatment.

Mix almond powder with rose water to create a paste. Apply this paste to the skin and gently massage the paste with your fingertips. Leave the paste for 30 minutes before you wash it off with cold water. This solution is very good to get rid of blackheads.

I am looking for a natural treatment for OCD, Anxiety, and Depression?

I have tried prozac, but I do not like the side effects not to mention that I had a very bad allergic reaction. I am looking to try the natural approach first, but cannot afford to see a homeopathic doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find information or who I should ask about this. My therapist suggested a pharmacist but the pharmacist told me that the only solution is medication.

Thanks in advance

Your only solution is NOT medication. Of course a pharmacist would tell you that, so they can sell more medication to you.

I am 38 years old and from the time I was 10 years old until 2 years ago when I changed my diet, I also suffered with OCD, depression and anxiety.

The OCD was fairly mild, things like checking the iron was off 15 times before I left the house. I managed to get this under control by touching the iron once and saying loudly “I am checking the iron now and it is definitely off” and then when I had another urge to check it, I would just repeat my earlier wording in my head and be 100% sure that I had definitely turned it off. It is a long slog but after a while you can re-pattern your thoughts.

hypnosis would probably help with OCD too.

My depression and anxiety were quite severe and at one stage 15 years ago, I went through an intense suicidal period.

My doctor kept trying to get me onto different medications but I resisted as I wanted to find a more natural way. I have seen many people trying to come off anti-depressants and it is not a pretty sight believe me.

So in the last 5 years I did the following:

I found things like reducing or completely abstaining from alcohol to be very useful, since alcohol is a depressant.

I found daily chakra meditation to be very helpful.

I found daily relaxation meditation to be very helpful.

I found bach flower remedies to be very helpful - the rescue remedy was very good for my anxiety

I found gentle exercise (yoga, swimming) to be very helpful.

I found reiki treatments to be very helpful.

All of the above did not cure me, but they certainly helped me to live a normal life and avoid medications.

However, the main saving grace for me was 2 years ago when I changed my diet.

I went from a SAD (standard american diet) to a Raw Vegan diet and my depression and anxiety completely disappeared.

It is quite amazing really. Sometimes I lose the plot and start eating cooked foods (i.e. - over the holiday season) and my depression and anxiety both return.

And when I eat Raw Vegan foods again, my depression and anxiety disappear.

Apparently this is quite common and many people have found their life-long depression vanishes once they change to a Raw Vegan diet, especially if you also consume certified organic produce.

There are lots of books, DVDs and websites dedicated to the Raw Vegan lifestyle, so maybe you should read up on it and seriously consider making the change.

Good Luck

.

Depression Nos Symptoms Quotes:

Worry is a complete cycle of inefficient thought revolving about a pivot of fear. By Author Unknown Find out about Depression Nos Symptoms

severe Depression: The Symptoms of Depression

Depression is considered to be a disorder. This is because it involves everything in the patient's body, mood and thoughts. Anyone who has this won't be able to eat properly, sleep well, think about oneself and practically do anything.

People have to keep in mind that depression is much worse than just a passing mood that anyone can get because of a bad day at the office. This is because it is something that a person will not able to recover from with just a snap of finger rather with medication, counseling and the help of family and friends who are there.

Some studies have shown that depression may be passed on from one generation to the next. Though this doesn't always happen because there are also patients who have never had this in the family's medical history, only one thing is certain. This will usually occur when there are changes in the patient's brain structure or function.

This could be from worrying too much or having low self-esteem, losing a loved one after a traumatic event, hormonal changes in the body or after patient has survived from a medical illness making one feel apathetic.

The causes just mentioned show that depression can happen to anyone regardless of age, culture or gender. Those who have this problem can later become mentally ill while others turn suicidal. The best indication for anyone to notice that the person is experiencing this problem could be in the output at work or in the relationship one has with others.

Here are some of the symptoms of depression. The person may experience one or manifest a combination.

1. The person may have feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and sadness.

2. Someone who once enjoyed a certain sport or hobby has somehow lost interest in it. Friends or family may not be able to tell if this happens on one occasion but will be able to later on if this continues.

3. Depression can also happen if the individual has difficulty focusing on a certain task, has difficult remembering something or when making a decision.

4. The patients weight has dropped down because the person isn't consuming anything or if this has gone up due to overeating.

5. The individual has a hard time going to bed at night more popularly known as insomnia or has difficulty getting out of bed in the morning.

6. The last symptom is the person's no response or reaction to the treatments given by the doctor. This can be felt even when given medication to treat a headache, digestive disorders or chronic pain.

Those who feel that the person has this problem should schedule a physical examination with the doctor. More tests will have to be done later on should the specialist feel it is needed so that a course of action can be taken.

Depression affects many Americans every year and studies have shown that it affects more women than men. Since there is no wonder cure for this disorder, both the doctor and the patient will have to work together for weeks, months or even years before making a breakthrough.

The specialist may use drugs and recommend medication. Patients who feel this can be overcome at home can just visit the clinic regularly while those who cannot will have to be confined to the mental institution.

My son is 7 and diagnostic with ADHD/PDD-nos when he was 5.?

I was reading some questions and answers search by PDD.
ADHD has the same symptoms as PDD -
ADHD is treated by medication
PDD is autism which is not treated by Medication (may be harmful?)
ADHD could be the same as Bi-Polar (searched for bi-polar)
Bi-polar sometimes mistaken for Manic Depression?
Better (in some cases) to be treated by psychiatrist as oppose to Pediatric.
This is pretty confusing, but I really appreciate everybodies thoughts, researched knowledged, and experiences.
My son is currently on 54mg of concerta for ADHD. Sometimes he still doesn't listen in classroom (thinking about something else).
Question is, will a psychiatrist be bettter for him even if he can not express himself too well and can not understand what the doctor is saying without me translating in with words he understands? I like for him to visit without me so that he feel free to say anything he wants. Sometimes I think he say what he thinks I want to hear.
Thanks

I would have him evaluated by a pediatric specialty team at your nearest children's hospital or rehab center. My daughter was dx'd with ADD/ADHD/PDD-NOS and then High-functioning Autism by her ped and later by state funded physical and occupational therapists through early intervention. She was medicated at the school's insistence for ADHD. When that made things worse instead of better, we had her evaluated at our local pediatric rehabilitation center and learned that she was actually a perfect match for the symptoms/actions of Aspergers Syndrome and early onset bi-polar disorder. The reason the meds made things worse was that with bi-polar, you can't give just the anti-depressant, you have to do a mood stabilizer as well, or the manic symptoms will intensify and often times go out of control. Hope you find the help you need to help your child

Depression Nos Treatment Quotes:

We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies. By Roderick Thorp Rainbow drive Find out about Depression Nos Treatment

DEPRESSION MEDICAL TREATMENT

Today there are many different treatment options available for depression. However, you should always remember that overcoming depression will take time and you will need to stay strong through some of the more difficult days.

Different types of depression  are caused by biological factors (melancholic depression and psychotic melancholia) and are more likely to need physical treatments, (e.g. antidepressants) and less likely to be resolved with psychological treatments alone (e.g. counseling, psychotherapy). Whereas, non-melancholic depression can be treated equally and effectively with physical treatments or with psychological treatments. Psychological

Treatment:

Psychological treatment is an alternative to medication or it sometimes works alongside medication and is usually provided by a mental health professional, such as a counselor, psychiatrist or psychologist.

Generally, psychological treatments or therapies used for depression include Cognitive Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Psychotherapy and Counseling.

Physical treatment:

1) Medication – Medication, to some extent, is successful in managing depression. There are several different types of antidepressant medicines available in the market which is prescribed by doctors or psychiatrists. Each antidepressant medicine works in a different way and has different applications.  Like most other medicine, these medicines too can have side-effects and some medications are better suited to adults than young people.

2) Hospitalization – If your depression is severe or if you have suicidal tendencies, then hospitalization may be necessary for you. You might have to spend a short amount of time in the hospital if you begin taking medication to make sure that it is working effectively or to gauge side effects.

Alternative Therapies

Along with seeking treatment to manage depression there are a number of things you can do yourself that may help you when you are feeling depressed. Some of these include:

1) Eating well and being active even when you might not feel like it. Exercising and eating well can help when you are feeling down as both stimulate hormones, such as endorphins, which help you feel better about yourself and your life.

2)  Whenever you are experiencing any changes in your emotions you should consider writing them down in a journal or a daily diary. This is not only a great way of understanding your emotions and a specific situation but it also helps you think about alternative solutions to your problems.

3) Always take time out to relax. When you are feeling down it may be hard to be social or motivate yourself to do things, but taking a little time out for yourself each day will help you to make a list of all the things you enjoy doing and then you can plan to do something from this list each day.

4) When you are depressed, it may seem hard, but sharing how you feel and hanging out with someone you trust can help you get through the hard times.

5) Sometimes in a race to be ambitious  you may set goals which are almost unachievable for you and then end up feeling even worse when you do not attain them. Always try to set goals that are achievable for you, even if it's on a day by day, or hour by hour, basis. And after achieving each goal, don’t forget to reward yourself.

Im 18 but when I was 14 I went to a residental treatment center, The paper work says I was diagnosed with Depression(Dont know which kind) and a eating disorder (nos i think). I was put on prozac. (im off it now) Where is that information now? Like what if i want to be back on medication or find a theropist and say i need help for depression if i dont have nothing to prove I really have it? Or is it still in the system? Are my doctor and theropist in the system to? What will be on my mental health records? Should my mom still have the records? Help
Oh and i was under franklin county children services ( fccs) so im not sure if my mom has any info.

franklin county in what state. If you remember the name of the therapist you were seeing you can request a release of all records that pertained to you. You can also ask for the records from the RTC you were in as well. If there was any agencies involved such as children services, or CASA, (guardian adlitem) and so on you can also ask them for their records. I say this because if you do not know the name of the mental health provider you seen it will be in the records of other agencies. i wish you luck and I also wish you well. God Bless!!

P.S.. If you decide you want to go back on medication, all you have to do is tell your current mental health provider about your history. It could be to your advantage to ask your new mental health provider to re evaluate you in the best interest of making sure you have had the correct diagnosis. Also, your new provider will request records from previous providers. I hope this helps hon.

whats the best way to deal with having bipolar disorder / manic depression ?

i have recently been told i suffer from bipolar disorder is there any tips people can give me on how to handle it im a bit scared .
becase i was resently diagnosed and also suffer from anorexia nervosa it makes it slightly harder

Ok try This

I have come up with seven ways to assist you in helping to eliminate or reduce your depression.

1) Eat properly : This means, most of all, remember TO eat! With depression, it seems that you either don't want to eat at all or you gorge yourself constantly! The main thing that is important is that you eat healthy nutrients for your body in order for it to help to get back into balance. If you have trouble eating large meals then eat small meals divided up during the day. Remember to eat green vegetables, chicken, fish etc. You need your protein and especially your vitamin B which helps with stress. You can also take a supplement if your doctor doesn't contraindicate it.

2) Get enough sleep: Again, with depression, usually the norm is that you either sleep too little or too much. What we are looking for here is a happy medium! Both too little and too much sleep can make you feel even more depressed! If you aren't tired or you have repetitive thoughts running around in your head, try to read prior to going to bed, watch TV, exercise before bed so that you are tired. Take a hot bath, have your husband or partner give you a massage, use relaxation techniques. Try anything. Remember, don't lie awake in bed if you can't sleep. Get up and do something and then try lying down again. That way you only associate bed with sleep.

3) Get outside: Why? because that puts you back in the world of the living! It is especially helpful for me to go out to the woods and take in all of the scenery with all of the sights and sounds. There is something about hearing birds chirping that helps. Sunshine helps depression so get out in the sun and let it do it's work! Breathe in the fresh air. Even if you have no desire to get off of your sofa or out of your bed, believe me, I have been there and I understand, trust me, you absolutely need to get outside! Go do an errand that needs to be done, even if it is just a small one. You CAN do it if you try!

4) Exercise: Ok, I KNOW that you have heard this one! I used to think "yeah, right! I can't even get the strength to stand up from my chair but you want me to exercise?!!" I hear you loud and clear, but before you completely disregard it, let me inform you that exercise releases endorphins that naturally reduce depression so that it scientifically does help you! When I say exercise, I don't mean that you have to start an aerobics class or anything that intense!! I am talking about just walking around the block to start with..or as far as you can tolerate the first time. Try to increase your endurance and distance every time you walk. You can also try the Wii fitness, if you have it. It can be quite helpful because it offers Yoga as an exercise, which I happen to use. The main point is get your body moving! It may be painful at first..but you definitely will see a difference in the end.

5) Use Relaxation Techniques: If you have not learned how to relax or any easy relaxation techniques, there are many videos out there that will walk you through a full body relaxation and it is something that you can also do for yourself. One example of this is to start at the top of your body, ( your head) tense by the count of three and relax by the count of three, and continue this with every muscle of your body down to your toes until you feel physically relaxed.
Relaxation also applies to whatever it is you do that is your passion. You may not be "feeling" it right now, but attempt to try it. Going through the motions can sometimes be helpful. Write in a journal, paint, go fishing, listen to music, dance...whatever it is to you that can give you peace of mind, even for a moment. Go to your "place of peace" or an imaginary place that you feel safe, secure and free of stress. Basically, it means try to imagine yourself in a place where you feel the most comfortable and safe. Imagine it and memorize it to the fullest detail. This will be helpful for you when you get stressed out. You can mentally take yourself back to that place quickly with practice!

6) Pet a pet: Sound simple? Well, it is! Research has shown that people who have pets are less stressed. Think about how relaxing it is to pet a cat or dog. They love you unconditionally and only want to please you. What more could you want? More and more hospitals, nursing homes, etc. are allowing "pet therapy" for their residents because they realize it's value. Try it for yourself. You will be glad you did!

7) Act "As if..": Most people who are in any type of recovery program knows only too well what this saying means! To explain it.. it means even if you are feeling completely depressed, try as hard as you can to act "as if" you aren't depressed. Go through the motions of your daily life. It is important to keep up your routine. Depressed people tend to get out of their normal routine and find it difficult to resume it sometimes. This does not mean that you will automatically feel completely wonderful and not depresse
