Fibromyalgia Blues - Depression, Anxiety & Stress

How can you have chronic pain and fatigue and NOT be depressed?  All people - healthy or not - struggle every day with the stress of raising a family, their jobs, financial troubles, family illness and yes, death & taxes. You’ve got to get the kids to school on time, pay the bills, go to work (if you can work), clean the house, feed the pets, water the lawn, pick up the kids, take them to soccer, piano lessons, make dinner, make the kids do their chores (good luck) and you have to do all this AND MORE with debilitating pain, fatigue, migraines, IBS, TMJ, RLS, etc.  Just thinking about it is depressing!

Fibromyalgia sufferers are often misdiagnosed with anxiety disorders and depression, implying that it’s “all in your head”, but research has consistently proven that Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression or hypochondria. Anxiety and depression do CO-EXIST with FM & treatment is important because both can make FM worse and interfere with symptom management.

From my own experience, I can tell you how easy it is to let it get the best of you.  There were days when I just got into bed in my dark room I called “the cave” and isolated myself from my family and friends.  I avoided leaving the house unless I just absolutely had to and when I did, all I could think about was getting home and crawling into bed.  The more depressed I got, the more pain I had.  The more pain I had, the more depressed I got!

I had anxiety attacks and the stress of a bad financial situation was more than I could handle - or so I thought.  There were times when I wondered how in the world I was going to make through the next day - How much longer can I deal with this?  I felt hopeless, helpless and worthless.  My self-image was horrible and my confidence level was nonexistent.  I was ashamed.

Have you ever felt that way?  I hope not, but IF YOU HAVE, there is a way to get out of the pit of depression and anxiety!  You can become a productive member of your family and society as a whole.  It’s not easy, but what choice do you have?  You know you don’t want to live like this forever.

I always hated the idea of therapy!  First of all, the effort it would take for me to get out of the house was a big factor.  Secondly, I didn’t want to tell all my pitiful story to a stranger and I wasn’t even sure I’d be believed when it came to the Fibromyalgia part.  There are still some mental health professionals that believe FM is psychological rather than physiological.  I didn’t want to hear it. 

About a year ago, my son needed therapy for depression and anger issues.  I took him to several professionals and one suggested (in front of my son) that he could cure my Fibromyalgia because it was more emotional & psychological stress than a physical problem.  The next day, we went to another therapist.  I didn’t trust him to help my son if he was going to say that to me.  We finally found one that fit our family since we would all take part in my son’s therapy.  It didn’t take me or the therapist long to discover I needed help, too.  He saw right through me! 

Therapy has changed my life in so many ways and with an understanding professional to guide me, I have taken back the control I had given up to Fibromyalgia.  He helped me see my value, my positive traits and taught me how to cope with my pain, stress, anxiety and depression.  Talking about it with an objective party is also a way of healing emotional scars and it was a relief to just lay it all out there!  He also recommended a new anti-depressant to my doctor which has helped me a lot. 

Perception is everything.  I perceived myself a certain way and became exactly that. 

My father was recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer - he never smoked.  It is the rarer form of lung cancer that is fast-acting and incurable.  I was devastated when I heard the news!  My dad is my hero and my rock - life without him is something I can’t even fathom.  I really lost it for a while, but with counseling, I am finding my own way to cope.  I’m still have bad days, but I am trying to work through them in a more healthy way.  The woman I was two years ago would have gone back to her cave and never come out.

There many medications, supplements & herbs out there that can help.  Talk to your doctor about which ones might work for you and always double check for interactions and side effects!  I have a lot of information about prescription drugs alternatives, therapies and other resources on my website that might be of help.

Don’t be afraid to take that first step and find a good mental health professional!  It truly is worth it.  I am now a functioning “Fibromyte” and though, I still have pain and other issues, I can get through them one day at a time.  If I can do it, YOU can, too!

Do you suffer from depression?  Are you close to someone who suffers from depression?  Do you try to hide this fact from the rest of the world?  Depression is a mental illness. MENTAL illness.  Oh that can’t be admitted to anyone!  Why not?  We accept that our physical body becomes ill, gets diseased, sustains injury so why not our brain?

There is such a stigma attached that we are kept from disclosing to others what is wrong. Others appear to think that a sufferer is either “mad” or needs to pull himself together.

Fortunately society is coming round to the realisation that depression is as much an illness as cancer.  For this reason it is becoming easier for the sufferer to seek help by admitting to himself that there is something wrong which needs medical attention.

How do you know when to see your doctor, or persuade your family member or friend that she should seek help?  Well depression can come suddenly or creep up gradually so you will decide by what you see or feel.  Sudden depression can descend as a full blown mental illness for which the doctor, or ambulance, will immediately be called.  In these cases it is taken out of the hands of the sufferer.

Supposing though it has crept up very slowly and is held at bay at certain times but comes out at others.  Then you will need to look for various symptoms.  Make out a check list and actively observe what is happening.

  • Mood is depressed.  By this I do not mean that the sufferer is a bit blue. This is an ongoing sadness and emptiness. Can be expressed by appearing very tearful.  Cannot be shaken off.
  • feelings of worthlessness.  Not wanting to tackle anything because of the sureness that it will not turn out right  as they are useless at everything
  • Lack of interest.  Cannot get enthused by tasks or events which have in the past been a joy.  Doesn’t want to do anything about it.  Maybe does try but can’t get involved.  Takes no pleasure in anything.  Everything is pointless.
  • Lack of concentration.  Unable to keep the mind focused on the task in hand.  May flit from one thing to another without achieving any end result.
  • Can’t sleep, or sleeps too long.  Depression often turns a person into an insomniac.  Can’t get to sleep easily.  Then wakes often throughout the night taking a long time to get off to sleep again.  Can have trouble waking and getting up when morning comes.
  • Lethargy.  Throughout the day feeling tired and lacking in energy
  • Weight loss.  There may be a lack of interest in eating and drinking and over time this will result in weight loss without conscious dieting or exercise.  Tempt with little and often but don’t expect the sufferer to tuck into a three course lunch.
  • Thoughts of death and/or suicide.  May have ideas as to committing suicide or even some sort of plan.

If you keep a record of what you see or feel over a two week time span you will discover just how much affect this mental illness is having.  Don’t expect to see all these symptoms.  Also it is not always easy to spot as there may be quite a lot of cover up if the sufferer is at a stage where he can attempt to put on a front for others to see.

Let’s suppose that the sufferer is someone close to you, perhaps within the family.  You see them everyday.  You will be able to keep an eye on the condition so that you are aware of what is happening when the sufferer is entering an episode of depression.  The person himself does not always notice.  If you can see an episode starting you can suggest the taking of the prescribed medication.

Be prepared.  Depression very, very rarely goes away forever.  It recurs.  Just be ready to take action on behalf of the sufferer.

Clinical depression goes by many names -- depression, "the blues," biological depression, major depression. But it all refers to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months at a time (not just a passing blue mood), accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past.

psychiatrists estimate that one in four women and one in ten men can expect to develop depression during their lifetime; depression affects at least one in 50 children under 12 and one in 20 teenagers.

Symptoms

Generally, the symptoms of depression include:

• Feeling sad, hopeless and despairing

• A loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities

• Loss of appetite or weight

• Loss of sex drive

• Sleeping problems, such as an inability to get to sleep or early waking

Types of Depression

Psychotic Depression:

sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.

Melancholic Depression

Is a more severe depression than non-melancholic depression and is primarily caused by biological factors. It is an uncommon type of depression, affecting only around 1-2% of the population and roughly the same number of males and females. It can occur on its own (unipolar) or as part of Bipolar Disorder.

Major Depression

An individual with major depression feels a profound and constant sense of hopelessness and despair.

Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is when a person has mild and alternating mood swings of elation and depression occurring over a long time period. Because the mood swings are mild, and the elation is often enjoyable, frequently people with cyclothymic disorder do not seek medical help.

The periods of elation and depression can last for lengthy periods, such as a few months. Often, a person with cyclothymic disorder has a relative with bipolar disorder, or they may develop bipolar disorder themselves.

Psychotic depression –

A depressed mood which includes symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you (paranoia) and having delusions.

Non-melancholic – in this case the depression is not melancholic, or, put simply, not primarily biological. Instead, it has to do with psychological causes, and is very often linked to stressful events in a person’s life, alone, or in conjunction with the individual’s personality style.

Non-melancholic depression is the most common of the three types of depression. People with non-melancholic depression experience:

• a depressed mood for more than two weeks

• social impairment

treat depression and bipolar?

I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 bipolar, mainly sever depression with lack of sleep as the main side affect of my manias. Since I have just recently been diagnosed, they are still working on finding the right dose of medicines for me. I am currently on Abilify and Zoloft. What are nonmedicinal ways to make myself feel better while waiting for the medicines to take over and/or ways to enhance the affects of the medicines? Any advice on how to treat/beat/feel better with depression would also be helpful. Thanks.

The Pain of Bipolar Depression Disorder

Symptoms of depression include: loss of interest in usual activities, prolonged sad or irritable mood, loss of energy or fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, sleeping too much or inability to sleep, drop in grades and inability to concentrate, inability to experience pleasure, appetite loss or overeating, anger, worry, and anxiety, thoughts of death or suicide.

Symptoms of manic states are varied and include restlessness, increased energy, euphoric mood, racing thoughts, poor judgment, intrusive or provocative behavior, difficulty concentrating, and a decreased need for sleep.

The exact causes of bipolar disorder aren't known, but stressful life events, un-resolvable problems, or emotional damage in childhood, possibly combined with genetic factors may play a role. Scientists are also studying about the possible causes of bipolar disorder through several kinds of studies. As the causes are more clearly identified and defined through research, scientists will gain a better understanding of the underlying causes of the illness, and eventually may be able to predict which types of treatment will work most effectively. As it stands now it is thought that bipolar depression disorder is caused by electrical and chemical processes in the brain not functioning correctly.

Unfortunately, for most individuals, lifelong treatment may be required to prevent recurrent manic and depressive episodes. They should try to identify the features of the illness that are distinct to that individual, including the warning signs of recurrent manic or depressive episodes, so that someone in treatment can get immediate help to ward off those symptoms. Hormone treatment for depression?

I recently visitied a D.O. and a hormone test has revelaed that my hormones, specifically my cortisol, is high when it should be low and low when it should be high. Additionally, I demonstrate a lot of the symptoms of an adrenal disorder: depression, irregular menstral cycles, skin conditions, etc. My doctor has reccomended adrenal stress end (?) to treat my depression, but I have heard that hormone treatment for non-menpausal women is risky at best, a crock at worst. (I mean, you can get this stuff over the counter for goodnes sake!) I'm only 26! Does anyone have anicdotes or advice to share?

You may also want to have your thyroid checked. I would highly recommend seeing an Endocrinologist as they specialize in treating many of the symptoms you've mentioned. Best of luck to you, I've been through it too.

So how can you do to help your child learn how to behave properly, make friends, and get along in the world? Like me, you may undergo carried on imparted upon such a your child needs to be in a school setting with some children to be socialized. Let’s ponder for a time how sort of social skills a child through autism may learn in school.

1. In a school or classroom setting, your child is exposed to both positive and negative socialization. This isn’t really debated by any of us who have been in school. The question is whether or not the “good” socialization outweighs the “bad” socialization.

2. There are typically two placements for children with autism when it comes to schools. Each comes with its own drawbacks as far as social skills are concerned. For those who are lower-functioning, there is the special ed classroom. If your child is placed in a special ed class, they may actually pick up negative behaviors from the other students. Children who have never said a bad word in their lives come home with all sorts of words that the parents know they didn’t teach their child.

Or maybe a child who wasn’t aggressive previously starts imitating the hitting, biting, or screaming of a classmate. That’s not what I think most parents are hoping for when they are told to put their child in school to learn social skills. If your child is higher-functioning, they may be mainstreamed in a regular ed classroom. Will the typical behaviors of their peers be the positive socialization you hoped for? Unfortunately, many times children with autism become an easy target for bullies who cause them physical and emotional harm.

Other classmates, who may be nice enough themselves, may still go along with cruel jokes or name calling at the expense of a child with autism just because they don’t want to be ostracized from their peers. Whether it’s bullying, teasing, or isolation, children who are “different” and don’t possess the same social abilities as their peers often experience great difficulties just trying to survive a day at school. These children often exhibit signs of tremendous stress and anxiety, depression, and some even contemplate suicide. Autism And Social Skills

So are there any alternatives? Families who are concerned about the educational and social well-being of their children often choose to teach them at home. Home-schooling offers a better opportunity for positive socialization while drastically limiting the possibility of negative social experiences. Home-schooled children are not isolated or “unsocialized”.

Home-schooling simply provides the opportunity for parents to expose their children to a variety of social situations when they feel their child is ready to handle them. Most communities have home-school groups that offer park days, sports teams, special classes or lessons, as well as informal get-togethers for home-schooled children. It must be noted that children with autism do not learn social skills simply by being with typical peers regardless of the setting -- school or home.

In order to master social skills, autistic children require specific instruction and opportunities to practice skills first in settings with one other child, then with two children, then in small groups, and then in large groups. To place a child with autism into a classroom situation (or any group situation) and assume that they will learn beneficial social skills just because other children are present is not supported by research or real life.

Common sense tells us that we don’t teach a child with autism to swim by throwing them into the deep end of a swimming pool and telling them to start swimming. Likewise, if we want children with autism to “swim” in the social world, we can’t just put them in a situation that virtually ensures their failure. We must teach them step-by-step and give them plenty of time to practice their social skills in a supervised setting. We can accomplish this via one-on-one play dates with peers, social skills small groups, sibling/parent relationships, community outings, etc.

So the next time someone suggests that you should put your child with autism in school simply because of their need for socialization, consider exactly what that means for your child. There’s not much compelling evidence to suggest that inclusion in school settings is accomplishing positive socialization or excellence in education for most children, especially children with autism. I am autistic. i have that rare kind, which begins mildly in childhood, and progressies more intensely through adulthood. This type, with constant attention from self, and hte caring watchfulness of those around me, has some awesome tendencies. I am very fortunate in this respect.

I know there are other types, and which type is definitely the key ingredient in dealing with this illness. Not knowing which type , i cant give any specific details to how to cope.

I hope, there is some effect to this illness, which actually promotes the well being of the child. Some trait which stands out, and is easily recognized.

Have just looked on Wikipedia to see what the definition of depression is with regards to the economy?
