Natural post-partum depression treatments while breastfeeding? Plus, iron supplementation?

I believe I may be dealing with a bit of postpartum depression and am looking for some natural treatments that are safe while breastfeeding.
A few things I seem to recall hearing about are Red Raspberry Leaf and Evening Primrose Oil.
Also, I struggle with anemia and, on top of the iron in my prenatals, I take Floradix Floravital Iron+Herbs. I seem to recall hearing that iron supplementation and red raspberry leaf are not to mix, but do not recall why or even know if it is true.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me or offer advice?

im breaking up with my bf of 3 years at the moment, im at work, and im having an anxiety attack- i think! i have a history of depression and anxiety and i've recieved medication to no avail. what im experiencing right now is that my heart is beating very fast with that very unsettling and annoying feeling of having ur insides shaking like an earthquake while remaining eerily calm and stone faced on the outside. im also very tired i can barely write this, im also feeling very nauseas. i cant go home now. can u plz help??

How To Draw From That Higher Power For A Depression Cure

In spite of the immense technological advancements and inventions designed to make our lives easier, depression still exists and millions of people are still seeking a depression cure. With all the sources of entertainment around us, depression still lurks in the core of our very existence as humans.

 

Why? Could it be that with all the technology and scientific breakthroughs that we have lost the very essence of our being as humans? That-being a deep connection with the Omnipotent.

 

This may very well be the case. We work too hard, go at neck-breaking speeds in life to get things done and never take the time to relax and draw on the Higher Power inherent within us, it is no wonder over 25 million people in the United states are depressed and consequently seeking a depression cure to end their misery.

 

Coming from a Christian background and adhering to most of its principles in my honest opinion, an answer when asking for a depression cure will be a re-connection with God, by perhaps the most powerful yet easy method that although it is as old as the mountains is still extremely effective till this day: Prayer.

 

Don't approach it by thinking that you have to say some specific verses or a bunch of "Thee's and ‘Thou's'". That's not necessary, talk to your Creator as you would your best friend and let it all out.

 

The next step will be to simply take the time out to relax.

 

I'm going to borrow from Yoga folks, and the pose here is the relaxation pose.

It involves laying flat on a bed, and consciously breathing deeply and evenly in a ratio of 5:5:5 (inhalation, retention and exhalation). You may do this accompanying a clock or a metronome. Breathe evenly as thus for several minutes, now consciously make auto-suggestions to your body starting from the toes to relax by saying mentally: "my toes are hereby relaxed, my feet are hereby relaxed etc…"

 

Do this working to the crown of your head and make sure every organ you can think of is relaxed by this auto-suggestion. Now the best part, pick one of the following quotes depending on your spiritual beliefs and repeat this to yourself…(or heck, pick them all and repeat one after the other…)

 

1. I am that pure consciousness or self.

2. I can do all things through God who strengthens me.

3. They that wait upon God shall renew their strength.

 

Repeat this ‘mantra' mentally till it seeps into your subconscious and it literally replaces the negative thoughts you may have about your problems, just as light always overcomes darkness.

 

Now, turn to your right side, breathe evenly again, then arise and approach your day believing that you are refreshed and drawing upon that higher power for a depression cure.

 

Friends, this is very important, that you believe you are healed, just like a child believes the pain felt earlier has been cured by Mom kissing it away. Yes, such a child-like faith is required. Child-like but folks, powerful! It's been written: "According to your faith be it unto you" (this is a basic law of successful living.)

 

In addition to this, to co-operate with the Higher Power in healing you, you've got to meet this Power halfway. Make efforts to better yourself. Let's get back to the basics folks, exercise, eating right and positive thinking. In regards to a depression cure, you may have to supplement drawing upon that Higher Power with seeking good company, sources of laughter and a wise avoidance of those factors or people that bring you down.

 

A depression cure is within reach, the power which has its roots in the Omnipotent and Unseen is right there inside of you. With the tips above, you can draw from it, solve your problems and lead a depression free life.

 

Empower yourself with a depression cure that works, reconnecting with the spiritual forces around you. Great wonders exist in your mind. Tap into it and win.

Depression in the Elderly

Often people have the mistaken idea that it is normal for elderly people to be depressed. I have a lot of experience working with elderly in my former profession as a District Nurse and I say that it is far from normal for the elderly to be even a little depressed, mostly older people feel quite satisfied with their lives. unfortunately however when depression does develop, it may be simply dismissed as part of the  aging process.  for these reasons depression in the elderly goes  undiagnosed and therefore causes needless suffering for the family and for the individual who could otherwise live a fruitful life.

Understanding how the symptoms of depression in older people are  missed, many health care professionals are now being trained to identify the underlying depression.  If  such a diagnosis is made, treatment with medication and/or psychotherapy should follow. Recent research suggests that brief psychotherapy (talking people through their problems) is a highly effective means of treatment in the elderly, this is often better performed by a professional  health care worker as the elderly often do no want to "burden" those close to them with their own problems.

Depression in Children

It is only within the past 20 years or so that depression in children been taken seriously. 

The depression may show in one or more of numerous ways, the sufferer may pretend to be ill, cling to a parent,sick, refuse to go to school, or worry that the parent may die.  Some children may sulk all the time,always get into trouble , be negative and moody, be aggressive,start to bully and feel misunderstood.

The first step should you suspect depression is to have a complete physical examination by a Doctor.  There are many medications as well as some medical conditions such as a viral infection can cause similar symptoms as depression, and the Doctor must rule out these possibilities through examination and or tests.  If such a physical cause for the depression is ruled out, a psychological evaluation should be undertaken, usually by a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Any natural remedies for depression and insomnia? Very serious.?

I have severe insomnia, this week Mon- Sat I have had a total of 25 hours of sleep. I stay up all night usually until 4 am then I finally fall asleep, but have to get up to start my day aboout 2 or 3 hours later. I have head aches all the time and I have trouble with eating, I have no appetite and I'm not hungry, my body is just tired. I have asked my mother to take me to a doctor, but she said she doesnt want me being hooked on drugs and that I should look for natural alternatives first...are there any suggestions? I also suffer from depression, so I know that is part of it, but my mother also said she wants me to try to find a natural remedy for that. My causes for my depression are: family, my friends suicide and dealing with some other traumas...any suggestions please?

if you are having a hard time taking the next step of talking through these things with your doctor at the very lest talk through some of the less serious issues with a friend or family member you have great trust in,to atlest get some of the smaller issues off of your chest so your not dealing with everything at once.

For many North Americans, winter's shorter days bring with them a different kind of darkness: seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, which is a type of depression that strikes mostly during the colder months of the year.

While the disorder affects many types of people, medical experts say it can be treated and the seriousness of the illness reduced by watching for symptoms and taking early action. Those affected by SAD begin to see symptoms in late fall to early winter, said Dr. Peter Swanljung at Friends Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital, in Philadelphia. "To distinguish someone from seasonal affective disorder and a major depressive disorder (like clinical depression), it usually depends on timing," he said.

The causes of SAD are not fully known, but there appears to be a relationship between depression and sunlight, Swanljung said. Northerners are more susceptible to the disorder, he said, because of the darker and shorter days - a person living in Florida is less likely to suffer from SAD than one in Maine, for example.

There are a few theories about why this connection exists, Swanljung explained. One is that the change in light exposure during the winter months effects levels of serotonin, which affects energy and mood, in the brain. Another is that SAD is related to levels of melatonin, a naturally-occurring hormone involved in regulating our sleep cycles. And a third, he said, is that the changes in the amount of daylight somehow affect our circadian rhythm, our body's 24-hour clock.

A recent study from researchers at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto discovered that there are greater levels of serotonin transporters in the brain in the winter than in the summer, the first time such a difference has been found. When there was less light, more serotonin transporters were found. Serotonin transporters remove serotonin, so the finding suggests that there is more serotonin removal in the brain in the winter.

"This offers an explanation for why some healthy people experience low mood and energy in the winter, and why there is a regular reoccurrence of depressive episodes in fall and winter in some vulnerable individuals," Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, a researcher on the study, said in a statement. "The next steps will be to understand what causes this change and how to interfere with it."

Winter is also a stressful time of year for many North Americans, because of the holidays and the increased spending, travel time and busy social schedules that often go along with them. But the symptoms of SAD go beyond simple winter blues or holiday stress, Swanljung said. They are similar to those of clinical depression and include tiredness, increased appetite and weight gain, loss of interest in usual activities and low energy. Symptoms like those shouldn't be written off, he said, and if they include self-harm and suicidal feelings or attempts, they should be brought to the attention of a health professional as soon as possible.

SAD may not be as profound as other forms of depression, experts say, but it still warrants attention and treatment. "People need to understand that seasonal affective disorder is a real condition," Robin Monson-Dupuis of Aurora Behavioral Health in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, said in an email response. People in northern climates, where winters are particularly harsh, may think that negative feelings during that time of year are just a consequence of their location, Monson-Dupuis said, but if they affect your day-to-day functioning then they require investigation.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available for SAD. Light therapy, where patients sit in front of a very bright lamp or light box, is an option that many people have found helpful, Swanljung said. Though a prescription is not required to buy the equipment, it's worthwhile to talk to your health professional about it, he advised. Talk therapy can also be beneficial, as can simply keeping up with your contacts and avoiding social isolation. Exercise has been shown to help relieve depression, he said. Medication may be prescribed for more serious cases.

Paying attention to your mood and watching for patterns is a way to prevent seasonal depression from negatively affecting your life, Swanljung said. If it has been a problem for you in the past, beginning light therapy or medication ahead of time can help stave it off or reduce its severity.

S.A.D in the Summer?

(Reverse) Seasonal Affective Disorder. The sun makes me tired, sensitive to light, induces headaches, and all and all makes me want to be in a cooler, shadier place. I used to have very bad skin, (still do to an extent), and have always been prone to easy sunburns/face very red. Basically my depression just seems to get much worse when the sun comes out, which is a shame. I live in Southern California, so, any natural remedies or ideas for this?

I have a similar problem, but not SAD. When the sun is affecting my mental state and my physical health negatively, I just let myself stay inside most of the time. I try opening the windows here and there at least. Sometimes I'm able to go on an outing with family or friends, where they are distracting me and we're doing activities and such that make me feel better. Having people you care about around always helps someone get through these difficult situations.
