The problem concerning children and anxiety is becoming serious for physicians as stress levels increase in this age group. The fears may arise and vanish with age and time. It is natural to expect some anxiety among children at particular times in their lives. Another example of natural anxiety is stage fright, it is common in children during their early school years and even when they grow up they feel little conscious and nervous when it comes to giving a speech or making new friends but this fear eventually declines when a person gets used to the environment and people around him.

However if the anxiety produces a serious effect and starts to interfere with a child’s life and does not let him behave normally then it must be taken seriously. A child often shows edgy and nervous behavior when suffering from anxiety disorder. The children can even appear well behaved, quiet and shy all the time. If the child is very nervous or upset then he cannot continue his life normally, which includes instances when he will play or sleep improperly. Parents must take him to a physician for diagnosis. An early treatment is necessary or this disorder can prove serious. If the child shows anxiety symptoms at school then it is the duty of the teacher to inform his parents in time.

If the disorder is noticed early then it must be cured early too. When treated at the beginning the disorder has more chances of subsiding. Serious problems arising with this disorder can easily be prevented if the symptoms are noticed in time. Therefore, parents must be vigilant and notice the behavior of their child from time to time and look out for the symptoms that are different from the expected ones. If the anxiety symptoms appear longer than usual then a child must either be understanding of his fears or must be taken to a doctor.

A doctor may use his therapy session to make the child understand what he is going through. This will help him come out of this difficult phase and to lead his life normally.

As an expectant mother I have several fears and anxieties.?

What are some of your fears and anxieties as you are carrying this unborn child? Or what were some of your fears and anxieties before your child was born?
I should mention my worries. My worries are if my child will be born healthy. I wouldn't know what to do if my child was born with a mental disability or some kind. I hope to still try to be the best mother, but it would be pretty hard for me.

I was worried that they would be healthy and all right physically and mentally. That I would be able to be a good mom. I worried that I would make mistakes that would have them in therapy five times a week, at least.

I worried that I would get tired, really tired, and crabby and how much of a commitment parenthood is.

Oh, and I was worried about labor. Yeah.

You know, everybody has these kinds of fears I think, and you know what, you will be able to deal with it all. One bit at a time. Be here now. And some stuff is better than you think it'll be, some not as good or easy. Be here now. One minute at a time, sometimes!

Why do I cough when I am nervous, stressed, in fear or have anxiety?

Whenever I feel stress, anxiety, fear nervous or I am very worried I feel as though I have to cough. The feeling comes from my chest, nothing from my throat or lungs.
Its almost as if after though cough the uneasiness in my chest area goes away slightly (a few seconds after the cough).

I don’t smoke or do drugs or take medication, I also exercise regularly and eat fairly healthy. I don’t do or have anything that normally induces cough like smoking. or work in a coal mine for that matter

Growthful Fear and Anxiety - Feel the Fear and Know You're on the Right Track

For some reason we think if we listen to the lecture, read the book, buy the product, or attend the workshop that we should be able to "just do it." But the truth is that for athletes, artists, musicians, or anyone when they begin a new job - it's the hands-on practice that really builds their knowing, ability, and confidence in a new area.

In other words, the feeling of successfully learning something new is experiential - we have to experience ourselves doing it well in order to know that we've got it. This requires that we practice our new knowledge - which includes feeling awkward, making mistakes, and seeing our skills improve over time.

Last week I was working with one of my students who is dedicated to getting the most out of our work together. It was clear how much she admired my success in weight loss - how to know what to eat considering all the possible options, how to get herself to do what she knew, how to finally have peace with food and weight. She works with me to acquire that knowledge and inner understanding for herself because she longs to feel confident, unburdened, healthy, and radiant.

So I asked my student if she knew how long it had taken me to feel and embody the qualities she desired. Can you guess how long it took me? Six months? One year? Three years? I worked long and hard - learning to be present, understanding and experimenting with food and movement, exploring my emotional connections to food, reading, and studying, practicing what I was learning, and getting as much time as I could with my teachers who advanced my development - for 8 years before I felt I really got it.

I'm not special or unique. In fact, people who know me well know I can be a tough case - stubborn, willful, and resistant. In other words, human. If I can do this, you can do it. Put in the time, make your inner world and authenticity a priority, invest in yourself, work with capable teachers, and practice, practice, practice and you will learn how to embody your optimal health, radiance, and prosperity.

If that's true, then why do so many fail? Less than ½ of 1 percent of those who lose more than 100 pounds will keep it off for more than 5 years without surgery. And less than 5 percent of those who learn how to create wealth will become prosperous. If anyone can do it, why don't we? Survey says...the number 1 answer is...FEAR! Fear comes in many clever disguises such as "I don't have time", "I'll start next month", "I don't know how", "I'm not ready", "I need to learn more first", "I have to do x, y, and z before I can do that", "I don't want to talk about it", "I can't", and "Huh?" AKA "I forgot". But basically they all are layers over the very normal, simple human experience called fear.

In the moment we choose to do something new, we step out of our comfort zone and put ourselves face to face with some very uncomfortable feelings. Feelings human beings will go to great lengths to avoid.

When we voluntarily step across the threshold of what we know, we want and can imagine success, but we can also imagine the worst possible outcomes. We might feel rejected, anxious, humiliated, stupid, ashamed, hurt, embarrassed, foolish, like a failure, vulnerable, insecure, and more. These are the kind of feelings we prefer to avoid so we'd rather stay with the activities we know, the ones that make us feel good in the moment or at least not worse.

The problem with feeling good in the comfort zone is that, if you really check it, it actually doesn't feel that good. It feels like being asleep, or numb, or like you're running away from something. In other words, it feels like there's something to fear.

Inside our comfort zone looking out toward a new expression of ourselves in the world, we are at the edge of a great opportunity, but our anxiety seems to say, 'This is the wrong way to go. If it were right I wouldn't feel so anxious.'

Fear tells our minds that others who succeed had it easier or were special in some way. Or if we don't get something perfect the first time or feel nervous or scared to do it we think that maybe its not for us. But the passion that moved you to learn about losing weight, becoming prosperous, or personal development in the first place came from somewhere. It came from the part of you that wants you to live to your full potential.

Our quick fix culture does us all a huge disservice here, encouraging us as it does to lives of mediocrity. We're so programmed to get rid of any kind of discomfort - QUICK - that we run away from normal, positive indicators of our growth and development.

Did you know there are two kinds of anxiety? There's ordinary anxiety, like the everyday anxiety of sitting in traffic or having too much to do in too little time. But there's also its lesser known counterpart, growthful anxiety. Growthful anxiety is a clear physical indicator that we have the opportunity to grow in a new and more expansive way, to be more whole, and to embody more of our potential.

Think about anytime you have started a new job, even though you might have been excited, weren't you also nervous? Didn't you experience a learning curve where, little by little, you began to master the aspects of your position that were once new to you? Didn't it feel uncomfortable and awkward in the beginning? Didn't you start to feel good about yourself as you worked through the uncomfortable phase and overcame the challenge of learning something new?

Of course you did. Because growing feels great. Much better than the comfort zone. That's the way human growth and development works. It's a simple, natural process of feeling inspired, challenged, courageous, and competent, at which point things become easy and we're once again ready for something new and the cycle begins again. The reason we love hero movies is because we each face the hero/heroine's journey of inspiration, challenge, courage, and success - we are each human development in action on our own unique path.

So I'm giving you some tips to break free from society's gravitational pull toward mediocrity, to harness the power of growthful anxiety (fear), and to step boldly forward on your heroic journey to weight loss, health, and/or financial success.

<B>Breakthrough Practices for You</B>

1. For the next 7 days, notice when you are in your comfort zone and when you are feeling the natural growth anxiety of challenging yourself with something new. Really FEEL both without criticizing yourself in any way. Whether you're sitting on the sofa watching TV or eating something you think is unhealthy, or if you're studying new material or practicing a new form of exercise, what do you feel? Numb? Afraid? Engaged? When you're practicing something new, can you feel all the stages of inspiration, challenge, courage, and competence?

2. Become aware of the messages in your environment. Are they positive and supportive of your growth? Or are they negative and discouraging? Positive messages tell you have what it takes, that success is hard and uncomfortable sometimes but totally worth the effort, and that you'll feel most alive when you are challenging yourself to live to your fullest potential. Negative messages tell you that you don't have what it takes to be successful, that success is supposed to be fast and feel good, or that it's better just to take it easy and not stress yourself out. Make a list of the sources of positive messages in your life and list of the sources of negative messages in your life. Where do they come from? TV, radio, family, friends, work, mentors, books, role models, church, school, or other environments?

3. When we're children, most of us (sadly not all) have a huge amount of love and support for our smallest achievements like taking our first step, learning our name, and adding 1+1. As we get older, we have to work extra hard to find capable support and encouragement for our growth and development. Many adults are jaded themselves, have given up on their own growth, and are threatened by those with passion and an unwillingness to settle for mediocrity, so people in that camp aren't going to be able to provide support for our goals. This week eliminate or lessen your contact with the negative influences you found in question 2 above and increase and strengthen your contact with the positive influences in your life.

4. Give yourself a chance to benefit from growthful anxiety by practicing new weight loss, personal development, or prosperity skills that are uncomfortable for you. Even 10 minutes a day for whole week will build your confidence and ability to a whole new level.

Have your children been affected by the disappearance of Madeleine McCann?

I ask because my brother said his daughters (6 and 8) have expressed fear when going to bed at night.

Apparently the father of a friend of the youngest, was attacked by a burglar and his daughter (and school friends) believe her father was trying to prevent the burglar from trying to abduct her.

As children many of us feared monsters under the bed, which was an unrealistic fear. But it seems the monsters have been replaced by real life abductors.

First and foremost, we need to educate the public and especially parents about the symptoms of depression. Why do I place emphasis on educating parents? Because, the number of children with depression and anxiety are also on the rise and it is important for parents to know the symptoms and not confuse them with developmental stages, “temporary madness”, stubbornness, mood swings or “showing off” behaviors. The most common is “attention seeking”. Yes, they might be seeking attention, but the cry for help is real. Take it seriously.

Today there is no social, educational or age discrimination. The most common symptoms of depression are: No interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy; feeling sad or numb, crying easily or for no reason; feeling slowed down or feeling restless and irritable; feeling worthless or guilty; change in appetite; unintended change in weight; trouble recalling things, concentrating or making decisions; headaches, backaches or digestive problems; problems sleeping, or wanting to sleep all of the time; feeling tired all of the time and thoughts about death or suicide.

What we look for in diagnosing depression and anxiety is a constellation of symptoms. Depressed and anxious children often do not have the verbal skills to say “I am sad, lonely, depressed etc.” They are more likely to act out. They may seem irritable, anxious, angry or moody. There is help. We have treatment options that work. These include medication, therapy, neurofeedback, social support and lifestyle changes. Getting well is only the beginning of the challenge; staying well is the real goal. Talk to friends and family. Identify the symptoms, seek professional help and advice.

i work in child care and need some strategies for separation anxiety and some different approach to it all?

*Acknowledge their feelings too...don't just say "you're alright".

*Watch how the parent settles their child...look at what works and what doesn't, and copy what does work!

*In the past I used to settle this child by drawing him a Thomas the Tank engine picture, after I noticed that his mum did that for him at the centre sometimes. He would cling onto this picture for most of the day!

*For another child, each day that he was there, I would sit with him and he would do a drawing for his parents. I would fold the drawing into a card, and I would then ask the child what he'd like me to write in the card, and then I just wrote down what he said (which was normally something like "Daddy, I love you"). Awww :(

*For another child who would get extremely upset when her mum left, i'd take her inside to dance to her favourite music. That helped her deal with her anxiety.

*For children who get distressed during the day, also saying to the child that "mummy misses you too" can help some children.

*When you've got a child who is physically clinging onto their parent in the morning, get down on the child's level and say "can I pick you up so that you can give mummy a kiss goodbye?". Then let the child give their mum a kiss and give their mum a wave and encourage the child to do the same. I've found that this is a nicer way of separating a child from their parent.

*When a child is missing their parent and says they want them, don't just say "she'll be here soon"...try saying "she'll be hear after afternoon tea/rest time" what ever normally occurs before the child goes home.

*Try and build really strong relationships with the children, and they will feel more comfortable being cared for by you.

*Remind parents that if they themselves are anxious, then their child will pick up on that. Encourage parents and the child to get involved in a setup experience in the centre to help settle the child.

I have a crazy blue heeler boxer mix that has separation anxiety and won't let me catch her when leaving?

We got Rosie as a puppy 6 months ago. We believe she is probably a Cattle Dog/Boxer mix.She looks just like a cattle dog only with brindle coloring. She has been crate trained and has no problem with the crate. She will sleep in her crate when we our home but when we leave she will druel excessivly and soak her cage. Now she won't come to us when she is outside if she thinks we are going to leave or even when we are not going to leave. She will stay close to me but won't come to me even for a treat.Eventually she will come inside if I leave a door open and hopefully I will be near it to close the door before she runs outside again. She also bites the kids ankle or arm when they are running or riding their bikes.She runs around the house like a crazy dog and will even jump on the garage roof.Is there any hope for her separation anxiety to get better?What is the best way to get her to stop biting.She went to obedience training but I feel she needs more.Any good agility or obed. books/

The nipping of the ankles definately makes her a cow dog. Cow dogs are really smart. A sharp "NO" should teach her not to bite. But the herding instinct of stopping your kids on a bike... We had a queensland that had to go because she was more protective of me as a kid than my mom was. She might not outgrow that. She was bred to protect the stock. And if she thinks the kids are getting too far, she is just naturally herding them back to where they should be. That will be much harder to break her of. That's why the queenie left, my parents never found a cure for that. As for fear of being crated, some dogs take to that, others fear the confines. All I can suggest is she will take much more time than most dogs. You will have to pay a lot of attention to her. If you have a ritual you do before leaving (in my family, it's put your shoes on) make sure you catch her before you do that, otherwise she'll see the action and know what's comming next. Our Children Face Anxiety Disorder Everyday

Does your child tense up when the subject of going to school or day care is raised? Does he throw temper tantrums or start to cry as you try to get him to leave for school in morning? Or maybe he pretends he's sick to avoid going to school. If he does any of these, he may be suffering from anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder is a condition characterized by feelings of apprehension or extreme anxiety. It can manifest itself physically by sweating, accelerate heart rate or palpitations, hyper-ventilation, and a host of other symptoms.

Many parents think that this is just a phase and that their child will eventually grow out of it. If, however, this is a true case of anxiety disorder, ignoring it will probably only make the problem worse.

It's estimated that some sort of childhood anxiety disorder affects up to 10% of school age kids.

Probably the most common type of childhood anxiety is separation anxiety. Separation anxiety occurs when the child experiences severe anxiety when their primary caregiver, usually their mom or dad, leaves them with another person. Separation anxiety usually occurs between the ages of 12 to 28 months - but it can occur or re-occur later. If you've just moved to a new neighborhood or town or if you have recently been through a divorce, separation anxiety can be triggered in the child even if he's never experienced it before. Even though not all children experience separation anxiety, it is a normal part of growing up. If your kid is over five years old and still having episodes of separation anxiety, you may need to take him to see a counselor or psychologist.

Social anxiety is another type of anxiety that many children face, especially kids that are shy, awkward, or have some sort of speech impediment. Children can be very cruel to other kids - often unintentionally. And no kid likes to be embarrassed or made fun of. If a kid is the constant target of bullying or teasing, he may become anxious at the mere thought of interacting with other kids. Social anxiety usually begins in the teen years, but it can start in early childhood as well. About 10% of adults in the U.S. have some form of social anxiety - which includes stage fright and public speaking. There is no one size fits all cure for social phobia. Most adults that have it never get over it.

Many children suffer from generalized panic attacks. In other words, there is no explicit event or action that triggers the attack, it just happens. This kind of anxiety disorder can be the most paralyzing of all for a kid because they don't know what's causing it and have no idea how to stop it. Childhood panic attacks can have lifetime consequences if not treated. They can interfere with a child's ability to make friendships and try new experiences. If your child is experiencing panic attacks, you should take him to see a child psychiatrist. Panic attacks may be so severe that the only course of action may be prescription medicine.

When someone mentions anxiety disorder, it's rare that a picture of a child enters their mind. But many kids experience some form of anxiety every day and desperately need for some adult somewhere to acknowledge it and help them deal with it.

How can I overcome social anxiety?

I think it came from my childhood because I was always teased because my mom died (yes, kids can be very cruel) It didn't help that I didn't have a good father to depend on either. His girlfriends used to constantly mentally or physically abuse me while he acted like he didn't see it. Now as a 19yr old I always feel so nervous when around people like theres something wrong with me. I didn't even know what there was a name for something like this. I'm scared to talk, eat, write, or even concentrate when around others. If I'm in a crowded room I feel like everybodys talking bad about me. I know I might sound ridiculous but please don't judge me, I really need help and some good advice.

Tackling social anxiety can be a complex thing. Just as other people wrote, the first thing that is good for you to realize is that something like this is an abnormal condition. What I mean is, it's not something you just shake off. It's something people should take seriously, so if people say that you're overreacting or exaggerating, don't listen to them.

Secondly, because of everything you've been through over the years led to this, it's something that will take time to address and try to deal with. This is something your mind and body have become habituated to through slow repetition of experiences. Conditioning like that needs time to correct.

I would suggest psychological counselling. I would not suggest prescription drugs as a long term solution, because this only numbs one from the pain and anxiety without addressing the underlying mental and emotional issues. The symptoms are masked, but the root problems are not.

Also, I would seek help from a medical/psychological professional, and not rely primarily on a faith based cure. I'm not trying to belittle or attack religion here, it's just that too many religious groups do not understand the complexities of psychological disorders and might try to convince you that all you need to do is pray about it or read the Bible to cure yourself. It's not that simple. I've seen people become more discouraged and miserable this way.

Your situation is unique and I'm not a counsellor, so I've posted some links to social anxiety webpages and forums that might lead you to find counsellors or other people with the same condition. Hopefully they will be able to lead you to the help you need. Remember that you aren't the only one, and that even though part of you might not feel this way or believe this because of your anxiety, there are people out there who do care.

I hope you find the help that you need. You're relatively young. Do something about it now and you won't regret it.
