Bipolar Disorder: Often, undiagnosed killer

Bi polar disorder is a brain disorder that causes sudden and unexplained changes in mood a person, who in turn changes the individual energy and ability to function. While virtually everyone experiences their own ups and downs from time to time, bi polar disorder symptoms are more severe, often damaging personal relationships and performance at school or work. Untreated, bi polar disease a patient may even lead to suicide. Until recently, bi polar disorder was called manic-depression, manic-depressive and bi polar affective disorder, among other medical terms.

Bi polar disorder is medically classified into four types, namely

I 1.Bi polar
2.Bi polar II
3.Cyclothymic Disorder
4.Bi polar disorder unspecified

Health experts mental use this classification to identify the symptoms of bi polar disorder, which differ among individuals. When the type of bi polar disorder has been identified, physicians can prepare a treatment plan that is best suited to the individual.

Bi polar disorder affects both men and Women of all ages. In America alone, approximately 5.7 million people aged 18 and over (2.6% of the population) suffer. Most victims have their first symptoms in twenty years, though the research states that the first signs of bi polar disorder may actually occur much earlier. The adolescents and even children can suffer from this disorder.

The first symptoms of bi polar disorder may occur during childhood, at the end life, or anywhere in between. behavior patterns between children and adults suffering from bi polar disorder may differ, making diagnosis the disease very difficult. Often, people may suffer for years before it is properly recognized and treated. Once diagnosed, this long-term illness must be managed carefully for the remainder of the life of the individual, just like diabetes or heart disease.

Bi polar disorder is a recurrent problem. Without treatment, patients have a 15% risk of death by suicide - in the developed world, bi polar disorder is the third leading cause of death among people between 15 and 24 years, and is the 6th leading cause of disability (lost years of healthy life) for people aged 15-44. It was found that the bi polar disorder tends to run in families - meaning that if a person has a bi polar disorder, and his parents are more likely to suffer as well. It was also found that a patient is identical also much more sensitive to the suffering of disorder. In most cases, however, the sleeping disorder are affected system until what triggered by a kind of emotional stress.

The theory that a bi polar disorder is caused by multiple factors, genetic and environmental, is supported by research. Sleep, for example, has been linked to bi polar disorder - Previous research has shown that patients bi polar have more difficulty sleeping and suffer more sleep problems associated with normal individuals.

Much research on the disorder bi Polar is currently underway, some are trying to discover the reason why many patients turn out to be creative geniuses.

Depression Parents Children Quotes:

When one has too great a dread of what is impending one feels some relief when the trouble has come. By Joseph Joubert Find out about Depression Parents Children

Why Are So Many Young Kids Depressed

At one time, young people were considered immune to sadness. Now mental health professionals know better. Even preschoolers can develop symptoms of depression, such as irritability, sadness, and withdrawal.

Abela, Associate Professor of Psychology at McGill and Director of the Cognitive Behaviour therapy Clinic at the Montreal Children's Hospital, says the realization that children can become clinically depressed is a recent development - within the last 20 years. But most studies of childhood depression focused on teenagers on the assumption that younger children don't have the cognitive capability and big-picture perspective to draw the negative conclusions that fuel depression.

Now Abela's research indicates that even the sandbox set can become depressed. He has found that small children, indeed, have already developed the cognitive factors that can lead to depression. Depression among children, he has found, respects no geographic boundaries.

"In the past 15 years, China has gone through the same amount of change that Europe or North America went through in 70 years during the Industrial Revolution." Marital infidelity and divorce are skyrocketing, urbanization is ripping apart traditional family compounds - and depression rates in China now equal our own.

Depression is the most common emotional problem in adolescence and the single greatest risk factor for teen suicide says child psychiatrist Peter Jensen, director of the Centre for the Advancement of Childrens Mental Health. He also notes that depression rated have been rising over the last half century: Teens born in the 1980s are more likely to develop depression than those who were born in the 1970s, whose rate of depression is higher than for those born in the 1960s.

Parents are bound to have trouble understanding a depressed teen's confusing signals; after all, who does not want to think of their child as happy and confident. But parents must pay attention to serious depression; the risks are too great if they don't.

No one knows the reason for this steady surge in sadness, but experts point to the breakdown of families, the pressures of the information age, and increased isolation. Social environment doesnt cause depression explains psychiatrist John March, M.D., who is heading a nation-wide study of therapies for teen depression. But environmental stress can bring out depression in people who are susceptible. Depression is more than teenage angst. It is an illness of the central nervous system that is common, impairing, and lethal.

Stress may predispose individuals to an initial episode. several factors associated with physical illness may contribute to the onset or worsening of depression. These include the psychological impact of disability, decline in quality of life, and the loss of relationships.

Medication side effects may also be a contributing factor. Physical illness may also contribute directly to the onset of depression by affecting physiological mechanisms such as neurotransmitters, hormones, and the immune system.

However, the strongest predictor of depression might be cigarette smoking. Depressed teens may smoke because they think smoking will make them feel better, but nicotine alters brain chemistry and actually worsens symptoms of depression.

Discrimination is another form of a societal stressor, and it can also lead to depression. It can take many forms some as subtle as not being included in a conversation or joke, some as blatant as threats scrawled on a wall, and some as violent as brutal beatings and other hate crimes. Because it can be hard to deal with individually, discrimination is a particularly sinister form of stress. By banding together, however, those who experience discrimination can take action to protect themselves, challenge the ignorance and hateful assumptions that fuel bigotry, and promote a healthier environment for all.

In the last decade, there have been reports of greater intolerance among young people and a greater tolerance for overt expressions and acts of hatred on college and university campuses. In a study by Schellenberg, Hirt, and Sears, attitudes toward homosexuals among students at a Canadian university were measured. Their findings showed that (1) attitudes toward gay men were more negative than attitudes towards lesbians; (2) students in the faculties of Arts or Social Science had more positive attitude than students in Business and Science; (3) women were more positive than men and (4) attitudes toward gay men also improved with time spend at college, but only for male students.

Genetic depression in child not adopted vs. child adopted?

If a child grows up and their parents tell them that when they were little(the parents), they had depression, and that depression is genetic in their family,so that the children might get depression in their lifetime because its genetic.
Now on the other hand...A child is adopted and this child has a genetic history of depression. Now if the child dosen't know that they were adopted and they do have a genetic history of of depression....
my question is: Is the child who grows up with a family that tells them that they have a chance of getting depression going to get it (at a higher chance) than the child who has it in its background but isn't told about it.
If this is confusing pls tell me to add more details. Its very hard to word but thanks for awnsering.

If it's going to develop there's not much to prevent it. Nature vs. nuture...I think it's a bit of both.
I think the person who's been warned would keep it in the back of their mind and analyze feelings closer. And the person who doesn't know might miss important clues and delay a diagnosis.

Depression Drugs Children Quotes:

panic at the thought of doing a thing is a challenge to do it. By Henry S. Haskins Find out about Depression Drugs Children

Is your Child Depressed? Watch Out as the Risks are Increasing!

Depression is a mental disorder that is today common even among the children. More often than not mental disorders are caused in the grown ups. But the situation is quite different nowadays. It is really a worrying prospect that our future generations are also not free from the curse of depression. It is indeed sad to know that even the children go through a number of mental complications nowadays. They also face mental dilemmas and problems. They are also vulnerable to a number of anti social elements that confuse and perplex them mentally. It becomes really difficult for them to understand what is bad and good. The saddest part is that most of the cases of children remain untreated for a long period of time. The parents also fail to take into account that their young ones are suffering one of the most killing mental disorders.

It is not that the symptoms of depression are not noticeable in the children. They show certain symptoms that are not uncommon but at the same time they are not normal also. Normally the parents think that it is quite natural for the children to show symptoms like sulking, refusal to answer to unknown people, refusal to go to school, feigning sickness etc. These symptoms are common but what is unique is that they have also been discovered as the most common symptoms of depression. The guardians, when their wards show these symptoms, concentrate on curing the symptoms and not the inherent cause. The parents also cannot be blamed. After all there are no parents who would want their children to ail in an ailment. Children undergoing depression never show a complete development in these symptoms. In short the symptoms do not cease. Because the symptoms are just the effects. The cause still exists quite strongly in the psyche of the depressed child. And if the symptoms are ignored for a long time as quite normal and mundane you might also run the risk of leading your child wayward. If the seeds of depression are allowed to remain in the child for long, the child might also get caught in the anti social elements as I mentioned earlier and might grow into juvenile delinquents.

Therefore, these kinds of symptoms on the part of the children should not be overlooked. Immediate help should be taken from the doctors to determine if the symptoms are the result of depression and complete subsequent medication should be carried out. There are ways of depression cure in children. However, they cannot be exactly administered depression drugs just like that. Let us take for example the case of Xanax online. Depression drug Xanax is quite successful in the adults but it cannot be given to the children without medical consultation. Even while administrating to the adults Xanax prescription should be attained first. The condition is also applied to those who buy Xanax online. Just because depression should not be neglected in the children, does not mean that you give them depression pills on your own. This kind of unwarranted action might put your child's life at stake.

what does everyone think of the supreme court's decision on child rape?

I think it SHOULD be elligible for the death penalty. To do something so evil and twisted to a child is the worst thing you could do in your life. You are killing part of them, which few ever recover from. A lifelong battle with depression, drugs, and/or alcohol will ensue, i am sure. I think any crime against the innocense of a child should have serious death penalty ramlifications. At least life in prison should be the penalty for such a crime.

I don't agree w/ the decision either. If you are not put to death you should have your yaya's cut off.

Childhood Depression Prevention Quotes:

The only thing that could spoil a day was people. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself. By Ernest Hemingway Find out about Childhood Depression Prevention

What To Do When Your Child Is Depressed

Like adults, children can suffer from depression, in this case: childhood depression. It's not uncommon and since children actually are the purest of humans, it might be safe to say if a child is depressed-and they actually tell you that-it's a rather serious issue.

One of the most common misconceptions about childhood depression is:"what do children have to be depressed about?". Perhaps this reveals a few misunderstandings about childhood depression and what it is. It is indeed quite similar to clinical depression-borrowing from medical terminology and is not just down moods resulting from a child being 'depressed' cause they have just been punished or have been told they can't have something. No, childhood depression is more intrusive into the child's very existence, may be long-lasting and if not attended to life threatening.

Perhaps another misconception may have to do with us thinking, being a child is a care-free, trouble free stage of human life. Not necessarily, with peer acceptance, school and family expectations, it is enough to make a kid worry and could be a huge factor to be considered in regards to dealing with a case of childhood depression.

Other Causes of Childhood Depression:

1. Family History of Mental illness or suicide.
2. Abuse (physical, emotional or sexual)
3. chronic illnesses.
4. Loss of a parent at an early age to death, divorce or abandonment.
5. Improper diet and lack of sufficient exercise.
6. Excessive exposure to negative factors such as parents arguing, bad neighborhoods etc
7. Insufficient parental attention.

Though this is not a conclusive list of the causes of depression in children, perhaps these factors are the most common ones.

symptoms of Childhood Depression:

1. Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
2. Abrupt change in Appetite
3. Change in sleep patterns (either increase or decrease).
4. Difficulty concentrating.
5. Making depreciating statements like "I'm not good enough, I'm stupid..."
6. Persistent Sadness.
7. Recurring thoughts of Suicide
8. Excessive clinging or withdrawal
If you notice any of these in your child's behaviour it may be time to seek help. But, keep in mind, the first step may be a good heart to heart talk with your child.

Reconnect with them. Make plans for a getaway saying things like "How about you and I go to the park, just the two of us eh?". Now seize this time to carefully see what could be the problem.

Also, borrowing from Yoga principles (Natural Healing as well), now will be a good time to assess your entire families diet.  Remember, "you are what you eat". Diet plays, perhaps the most important role in one's health, especially children in their growing stages so all efforts should be made to 'pleasantly' enforce a proper diet. You may not have to work too hard, most kids LOVE bananas and other sweet fruits and fresh juices. Vegetables...maybe not so much, but you get my gist. Try to replace processed foods with healthier ones.

Take time out to be there for your child or at least be conscious of who he or she is around the most.  Remember children are wonderful imitators.
If you yourself happen to be depressed, I recommend drug-free alternatives such as Yoga, and the previously mentioned proper eating. Also, look into fasting albeit it short as this works wonders for restoring your emotional balance as result of the body not being taxed with the duties of digestion, assimilation and re-building. Your mind clears and all moroseness disappears and consequently, you tend to find the answers to the problems warranting a treatment for depression in the first place. Keep in mind though; this radical step is suited only for adults not necessarily for kids.

Devote thirty minutes or more a day for open air recreation for yourself and your family. Visits to the zoo, active play, and swimming tend to relieve tension created in the home, school, and work and this may go a long way in assisting in curing childhood depression in the family.
Make efforts yourself to be cheerful as much as possible as kids do mimic what their parents constantly do.

Finally, if you are of a spiritual inclination, try prayer power and introduce your child to it. Hey, the Man did say: "Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God." I believe a child connected to God is one sure way of preventing childhood depression. (Of course with the factors previously mentioned.)

Parenting or being a role model to a child is a duty that may be tasking at times, even more say when dealing with a depressed child. However with the suggestions given, if tackled properly, childhood depression need not be a thing your kid has to go through.

What Is Teenage Depression And Its Causes

We all remember when we were teenagers. Boy, what a phase in our lives.
What with the need for peer acceptance, parental expectations, raging hormones, acne...
It's no wonder teenage depression exists in such high numbers.

From research and even mere observation, teenage depression actually manifests itself differently from adult or childhood depression as during this age, teens want to start to mark their territorial signs of independence and the last thing a teen may want to do is admit they need help for depression. Teenagers tend not to display gloom, self-depreciation, or talk about feeling hopeless like adults do during this stage of their lives if they are depressed, so as a parent or adult role-model you may need to watch for other signs of depression in the teenager you are dealing with.

Teenage Depression: Symptoms to watch out for

Though the signs of teenage depression may vary in both sexes, here are some symptoms that are common to both male and female teens battling with depression.

1. Excessive negativity and antisocial behaviors.
2. Wanting to leave home or retreat to their rooms constantly.
3. Inattention to personal appearance.
4. A lack of desire to co-operate in family get-togethers and activities.

Signs of Teenage Depression in Males:

1. Increasing in aggression and agitation.
2. A higher tendency to get in trouble with school or the law.
3. Reckless behavior such as uncontrolled use of illegal substances.

Signs of Teenage Depression in Females:

1. Less attention to their appearance.
2. Pre-occupation with death and themes of suicide.
3. Excessive promiscuity or an extreme isolation from members of their opposite sex.

Although this is not a conclusive list of the signs of teenage depression one should look out for in teens, the ones listed above are the most common ones. In addition to these depression symptoms in regards to teenager, other ones may include a lower self-esteem than average, referrals to suicide (in extreme cases) and a general negative outlook on life.

It indeed may be challenging to cope with as an adult to deal with a depressed teenager as it's a catch 22 situation, they want to be independent as teens, yet they need your help.
Well, this may be a good time to simply take charge, albeit with care and caution as we are dealing with delicate and sensitive emotions here and reach out to help.

Teenage Depression: solutions for coping with depression in your teen

1. If necessary, seek professional help. I lean more towards drug-free alternatives so meetings with competent Pastors, guidance counselors, teachers and therapists may suffice to at least get a diagnosis...if you need one.
2. Talk to your teen's friends and or their parents, although this approach requires care, remember, they are starting to declare independence and 'snooping' around on them may be defeating the purpose of reaching them, so do this with care and tact.
3. Suggest one-on-one outings with phrases like: "hey, how about a game of basket ball, just you and I..?' or "Hey how about us girls take a trip to the Mall?"
If they refuse, don't appear too crushed; simply respond with an understanding "okay maybe some other time..."
4. Ask if there is anything they'd like to discuss and this will be a great time to be more of the listener and less of the talker as soon as they start to open up.
5. Don't be what you've not always been to your teen, in other words being overly nice or "Bill Cosby-ish" (no pun intended Mr. Cosby) , trust me, they'll see right through the act and may withdraw even more.
6. Watch for signs of suicide (in extreme cases) and if there is the slightest
indication, double up your efforts to reach your teen. It helps if you've been close as parent and child from the beginning.
7. In the hopes things are not as extreme, soon as they manifest signs of reaching out, help, be there. Incorporate such limbs of a natural treatment for depression as exercise, proper diet and positive thoughts and affirmations.
8. Set a good example of being upbeat around your teen as much as possible. This can also be more of preventive measure if any.
9. Prayer. If you are spiritual, pray and it doesn't hurt and can help immensely to ask
your depressed teen to join. "Where two or more are gathered in My name, there will I be." Keep that promise from Above in mind-it works.

Teenage depression may wear a different mask from all other types, but it is essentially the same and with the proper steps taken can be overcome. Do not panic, however, be strong and there for your teen and in applying the steps above with other suggestions or creative ideas you deem right as an adult dealing with a depressed teen, you will be able to steer him or her back to a positive outlook on life.

Depression Kids Quotes:

Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow it only saps today of its joy. By Leo Buscaglia Find out about Depression Kids

Is Your Child Depressed? These are Red Flags-From Hoffman Estates and Cary, IL

Depression is not just an affliction of adults. Your children or teenagers also may also suffer from it.

You should consider treatment for them when their severely melancholy and sad feelings persist and interfere with their ability to function. This is not a small matter. It has been estimated that approximately 5 percent of children and adolescents suffer from depression at some point in time.

If you have a child under stress who has experienced a significant loss or who has been diagnosed with an attentional, learning or anxiety disorder, you should consider him or her at higher risk for a form of depression that may require treatment.

Depression can also run in families, so be attuned to your familys history. Also, your depressed kids may present symptoms that seem different from those of adults. It is important to be aware of any signs of depression in your kids.

Seek help for your child if one or more of the following signs persist:
Frequent sadness, tearfulness or crying,

Expressions of hopelessness,

Withdrawal from activities; inability to enjoy them,

Persistent feelings of boredom or low energy,

Social isolation, poor communication or manifestations of low self esteem,

Unwarranted expressions of guilt,

Excessive sensitivity to rejection or failure; taking things to personally,

Increased irritability or hostility,

Too many relationship problems,

Persistent malaise or frequent complaints of physical illness, such as headaches, backaches or stomachaches,

Frequent absences, disciplinary problems or poor performance in school,

Poor concentration in school or elsewhere,

Any major change in eating and/or sleeping patterns,
Frequent discussions about or efforts to run away from home,

Expressions of suicide or the frequent occurrence of self destructive behavior.

Also, if your kid used to play often with friends but now spends most of his or her time alone or in solitary pursuits, take note.

Things that were once fun but that now seem to bring little joy to your kid may signal depression. Also, if your child or adolescent is depressed, he or she may talk of wanting to be dead or commit suicide.

Remember, that if your adolescent is depressed, he or she is at an increased risk for suicide and is more likely to abuse alcohol or other drugs in order to feel better.

If your kids or adolescents frequently cause trouble at home or at school, it may be a signal that they may actually be depressed but not be aware of it. Even though your youngster may not always seem sad, his or her troublesome behavior may, in fact, still be a sign of depression.

Early diagnosis and psychological treatment are essential to help depressed kids. Comprehensive treatment often includes professionals from different specialties, individual and family therapy and sometimes the use of antidepressant medication.

For expert help for your kid, locate a psychologist who is experienced in treating children and adolescents.

Depression Young Children Quotes:

Dealing With Bipolar Children - Reasons Parents Must Be Supportive

Most parents care about their children right off the bat. When they are a baby, parents are frantic about every little sniffle. It's normal for parents to worry about the kids. Parents should always be concerned about their children, not just physically but mentally as well.

Even at a young age, children exhibit symptoms of a disorder and while childhood growing up plays a part in that it is now being concluded that certain brain disorders develop at their young age, getting worse as they mature. As parents, it is important to be aware in the level of activity the child does.

There are many people out in the world today suffering some type of mental or brain disorder, something called Bipolar Disorder. This disease can affect the way a person functions socially and affects their day to day activities and chores. When a child is affected by it, performance in school, relationships with other kids and even their parents and siblings are all greatly affected.

Bipolar disorder is a disease which can cause severed mood swings or rather shifts. It is also called manic depressive disorder. It is a bit easier as a child for parents to recognize the symptoms of the disease. When a child ha bipolar they will shift from unusually happy to extremely sad or depressed then back to extremely happy once again. All this within an instant for children. Symptoms of the disease can usually be seen in young adults. However, studies show young children can and do exhibit them too but parents are not well-versed in this disease and may miss the "warning" signs.

When a child is growing up, most parents feel that their child's behavior is a normal part of growing up. Yet, the missed signs can cause severe relationship problems with parents and siblings as well as friends and does effect their daily routine.

It is necessary to be aware of these bipolar disorder signs but especially in children (where, again, actions may seem normal.)

* Overly happy
* Too depressed
* Increase in energy
* Loss of sleep
* too irritable
* fast talker
* Unrealistic beliefs in one's ability and powers
* poor judgment; and
* Aggressive behavior

As you can tell, bipolar children is very hard to detect. Some parents consider the behavior normal and think the children will outgrow the symptoms at a certain age. If you suspect your child may have it, watch their behavior and their moods. Should they shift suddenly, there is a possibility they could be bipolar.

Consult your child's physician as soon as possible so that may recommend a wonderful psychiatrist. This doctor will be able to diagnosis your child and start them on a treatment plan that will be right for them and for the family. Medications can be used to stabilize a bipolar mood.

It is important that the child seeks help because the long the diagnosis is not made, the harder it is on the family and the person suffering. It is possible all these could lead up to a suicide attempt.

An effective bipolar treatment means diagnosing it early. Take note of any unusual behavior in children and consult your pediatrician if anything seems out of the ordinary. With proper care and lots of support, parents can be assured their child will get all the help they need so they can grow up normally and function well in society.

How might a depressed mother, as compared to a nondepressed mother, react to an infant who has a difficult tem?

Women are more likely than men to suffer from clinical depression. Women are also more likely than men to be the primary caregiver for infants and young children. A mother suffering from depression may react to her child differently and also impact that child’s emotional development differently than a non-depressed mother would.

I think you might have answered your own question. A depressed mother MAY have more negative interactions with her children, but that's not exactly an inevitability.

Depression Young People Quotes:

He who fears he shall suffer already suffers what he fears. By Montaigne Essays1588 Find out about Depression Young People

Alcoholism among Young People

In a speech of a government official running the elections everything may seem black and hopeless but as soon as he becomes a representative of the government, the overall state of things is fine. The truth is that the reality is harsh and the situation in the society is not at all as full of happiness as we are told. With all modern conveniences people get nowadays, we do not get closer but become lonelier and more depressed. We are running away from problems and hide from solutions on the bottom of the bottle of alcohol, though we know "spirits" will not change our lives for better.

Grownups suffer from constant stress, so what can be said about poor young men and women who are twice as impressible as any grownup. There are a lot of reasons for children to start drinking. The first one is the example of parents that have drinking problem within family for quite a few years. A child might reject the lifestyle of parents completely, observing the consequences of drinking or accept it being sure that it is the normal way to act and behave in the society. Parents may know or not be aware of a problem a child has. The second reason a child drinks alcohol though he or she thinks about it as disgusting is the goal to attract attention of parents that for one or the other reason can not give themselves fully to children that start their first specs in the society as aware individuals. The third reason may be to show off, to protest against something or to look different from others. The goal of a teenager is to show everyone who he or she is. Alcohol is harmful, forbidden and unacceptable at a young age, but these three factors alone are a powerful motivator that will provoke a child to take a bottle and taste the forbidden drink. And the last but not least is the reason called the "adult". The essence of the reason is to escape from harsh reality and avoid solutions of problems. Any of these reasons may be applied even to a social drinker.

Drinking is a problem, but no dry laws, no special events have yet influenced on the solution of it. Society itself has to finally evaluate the reason for drinking and bring up children that are aware of dangers some of the things that seem quite attractive contain.

When Your Child Under 13 is suffering From Depression

Is it possible for children less than 13 years old to have clinical depression?  It wasn't too long ago that doctors, and even parents, thought otherwise.  As doctors and research scientists in the mental health fields learn more about the way people think, as well as increasing their knowledge of medicine, it is now known that children under 13 can have depression as severely as teens or adults.

Long term depression in young children appears to happen in about 5% of children according to researchers.   Depression can result from long term illness, a loss, low self-esteem, anxiety disorders and attention deficit problems.  It is important to take note of any changes in your young child's behavior in order to determine depression.

Some signs of depression in children under 13 might be:

Frequent sadness or crying
feeling guilt a lot or low self esteem
Hopelessness
Changes in eating or sleeping patterns
Irritability or anger
Talk of suicide
Very poor concentration
Wanting to be alone, if previously they played with many friends
Causing trouble at school

Having one or two of these symptoms on occasion does not mean your child under 13 has severe depression.  Severe depression is when a child may have several of these symptoms continuing for weeks.

Children under 13, who are suffering from severe depression, can even have thoughts of committing suicide and actually do it, despite their young age.  Professional depression treatment is important for children suffering severe affects of the disease.  Most parents prefer to stay away from prescription depression drugs for their kids under 13 if possible, and it is only recommended as a last resort, and only in severe cases.

There are some natural homeopathic medications to try, for mild depression.  Sometimes merely paying more attention to your child and displaying more love is all the natural medicine that is needed.  Good nutrition is important also.  In addition to that you can try the natural herbs Passiflora and St John's Wort.  There are some combinations of these herbs on the market specifically for kids.  You will have to determine if your child has a mild case of depression or severe depression based on your observations or your medical doctor's observation.

A decent method of treatment will usually encompass family and individual therapy for children under 13 suffering from mild to severe depression.  Two popular types of individual therapy for children are:

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
Focuses on individual events such as bereavement or conflict that may be the cause of continuing depression.  Children are taught to work through the specific issues causing the depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events.  Children are taught to take a more positive view of life and their surroundings.

For severe depression in children under 13, a combination of the above behavioral therapies plus antidepressant medication sometimes is warranted.  There has been some caution in giving depression medications to young children since it sometimes increases thoughts of suicide.  Children less than 13 years of age who may need the combination of prescription drugs and behavioral therapy are those that may have reoccurring depression symptoms, bipolar disorder, don’t have access to therapy for some reason or they have very severe symptoms that require immediate correction.

Believing in children and knowing that depression can exist in children less than 13 is important.  Mild to severe depression is usually treatable and your child will be able to end therapy or medications at some point and live happily from then on.

How To Do A Correct Diagnosis And Assessment of Childhood Obesity

There has been a lot of public interest and research into health complications attributed to adult obesity in recent times. Nevertheless, the same amount of attention should also be given on issues regarding childhood and adolescent obesity.

There is a common perception that obesity in children is merely a cosmetic problem, with very little or no medical effects. This is a huge misconception largely based on lack of information and guidelines on childhood obesity.

Early assessment and diagnosis of childhood obesity is critically important in order to introduce some preventive measures. Medical approach for obesity in children and in adults are treated differently. This is mainly because children and adolescents are still in the growing stage and a lot of factors should be considered. Aggressive weight management programs are simply not advisable since it is important not to compromise the child's normal development and growth. Intensive deiting may very well prove to be quite disastrous.

Clinical nutrition assessment and diagnosis of childhood obesity generally revolves around the energy balance minus energy intake minus energy output. Unlike adults where energy balance is zero, children require a continuing positive supply and balance of energy to sustain normal growth. Subjective assessment and diagnosis of childhood obesity have proven to be inadequate. This would only result to the possibility of mislabelling non-obese children as obese and vice versa.

It is also highly critical to perform an accurate assessment and diagnosis of childhood obesity to decrease the cardiovascular risks in their early stage. Other health complications such as hyperlipidaemia, high blood pressure, hyperinsulinaemia, and prevalence of Type II Diabetes can prove to be deadly when left untreated. There is also a higher probability that childhood obesity can persist into adulthood that can also affect the child emotionally and socially. Obese children will predictably have very low self-esteem and have the tendency to isolate themselves from other people. Aside from that, obese people are often subjected to discrimation in our society.

This is the harsh reality that obese people have to live with every single day. This could trigger a person to undergo a deep depression and result to ill-health both physically and emotionally.

The growing number of obese people have made this a societal issue, and not merely the burden of the afflicted individual. We are all expected to contribute in hopefully minimizing the incidents of obesity both among children and adults. Early assessment and diagnosis of childhood obesity is still the major key in trimming down the figures. Employing some preventive measures is undoubtedly a more effective treatment.

How Do You Go About With Effective Childhood Depression Treatment

The thing about this sort of condition really stems from how the child was treated during his or her childhood, and the experiences that they have been exposed to. This condition is called developmental depression, and they can affect children from the ages of 4 and up. Most psychologists would agree that the main reason for childhood developmental depression stems from negative reinforcement that they get exposed to when they are children.

For example, this can not only be from the direct exposure to punishment that they get when they are a child; a broken home is also a form of negative reinforcement, and if the child has been exposed to the situation where they have to stop fights between parents, depression will eventually set in. Mental illness in children is something that should be treated in all seriousness, and sometimes, they are so complex that intervention can be a many tiered and multi stepped process. Recent statistics reveal that as many as one in every thirty three children experience childhood depression symptoms, and if not treated, might develop into a more serious form of clinical depression when they reach adulthood. What you need to do for the initial stages is that you need to be able to know how to spot the signs and symptoms of childhood depression, as speed in intervention is one of the most important things in the cure of this mentally debilitating condition.

Children who have this depressive disorder will often stand out from other children in that they have no interest in the activities a normal child would be excited to join. They often have no energy and can be said to be reclusive in their own environment. You need to be able to tall apart whether your child is either ill or he is clinically depressed, because more often than not, these two conditions get mixed up and the wrong prognosis is observed. Children who are depressed are more than often critical of their own outwardly appearance or their own situation, they often do not smile and would immerse themselves in a mundane activity for what would seem like hours and hours on end. The most effective form of treatment for this condition is family therapy, and this more and often would supersede cognitive therapy executed by psychologists.

Family therapy, conducted by a number of studies, have shown that the bond of love can be one of the most effective elements in bringing the child out of the depression cycle and back to a normal life. This is really common sense when you are thinking about it, as the only people that the child would trust from the get go is loved ones, and this can range not only from the primary parents, but secondary care takers and even guardians who have been in constant contact with the child. If you are considering an initial route to take to treat your child, then family therapy is one good way to do this.

Panic Attacks - Children - 3 Simple and Safe Tips

When we talk about Panic Attacks, Children are are just as susceptible to it as we adults are. It can be mind wrecking for a parent to see their young one go through such a thing. Having the knowledge and understanding around this topic can aid in better communication between you and your child. I will provide some simple and safe tips for understanding, preventing, and dealing with it.

To understand these attacks, it should be noted that it consists of periods of extreme fear, anxiety and  there may present a host of other symptoms along with it. This may include one or more symptoms such as an elevated heart rate, cold sweat, hyperventilation, being jumpy or exhibiting shakiness, etc... The list can become fairly large, but those are a few of the primary ones. This is the first tip - understanding it.

The second tip regarding Panic Attacks, Children will tend to show signs before these things happen. What I mean by this is that as a concerned parent, you may notice certain unusual traits in their behavior. It can range anywhere from activities they normally love, yet try to avoid it like the plague, or a lack of an appetite and other similar cases. This tip revolves around prevention. Try to be open with communication with them. Talk about these things, try to see if there are things that worry them. If this doesn't work out - as some children may keep silent about it, then reassure them. You are there, and everything will be alright. If they ever need to talk about anything, you're always available for them. This reassurance will provide some level of security, that they are not by themselves, they are not alone.

It is also helpful for some physical activites to be incorporated, or some sort of fun distraction if you notice symptoms starting to act up that may lead to a panic attack. By dissolving the possible attacks that may occur, you gradually break down the cycle where even the fear of having another panic attack actually leads to one!

When it happens and there actually are Panic Attacks, Children should be comforted. This is the Third tip. There are many treatments available that may help deal with Panic Attacks, but one of the most effective ways to deal with it is to simply keep your child close by, and shatter that barrier that tries to block them from reality. Your presence is like a warm blanket of security that can pierce through that wall that tries to block them from reality during an actual attack.
