Above all, you should always realize that as human beings you do have your limits. Do not try to cope with everything by yourself. Psychosis states may also occur after using a variety of substances both legal and illegal and both prescription and non prescription. drugs whose use, abuse, or withdrawal implicates psychosis include alcohol, cold medications, barbiturates, stimulants, cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy, amphetamines, and LSD. So avoid drinking too much or using drugs. This is for a research project! I like the movie "The Secret" but there is a whole other "Secret" that goes with "The Secret" That's for another day and another time!

I was diagnosed with PPD about 2 weeks after my daughter was born. Ifelt a little down about 8 days after she was born then one morning i woke up and just started crying hysterically for no reason, she had slept for hours she wasn't crying, there was nothing wrong and this went on for about 3 days my partner (who isnt good with emotional situations) was beside himself he would come home from work with me in tears and a baby crying (or not), he was fantastic though. I had read alot on PPD before i had my baby and knew i was a candidate for it becasue i had been depressed before, i was an older mother, i had very HIGH expectation of myself (having had 11 nieces and had alot to do with looking after them and even helped raise 2 of them for 6 months). So iwent to the doctor on the fourth day and was given anti depressants and went to see a councellor. When my daughter was about 3 months i took myself of the meds and inthe last few days have realised that was a silly mistake. I am nowhere near as bad as i was but i have massive issues iwth worrying what other people think eg: i am constantly told by my mother and sister in law "dont pick your daughter up when she s crying she will end up clingy and sooky" but i just cant leave her cry so ipick her up then stress that i am doing the wrong thing. I think PPD isnot spoken about enough when i was at my worst i would tell people (close friends) and they would say "yeah i was like that" and i never even knew. Now i have started to feel a bit better my partner is starting to feel down i thinkthis is due to the fact that he was working and then dealing with me when he got home, we have fought alot lately and he has now decided to go to the doctors to see what hey can do for him as husbands of women with PPD are more likely to get it themsevles. If i hadnt read as much as i did before i had my daughter i think this would have broken us and me ....

The Depression really came after the twenties. I thinkt he Depression is usually considered to have begun with the Wall Street Crash in 1929, and ended with America's entry into World War Two in 1941.

The 1920s was an era when a lot of people were conspicuously enjoying themselves, but even in the 20s there would have been plenty of poor people who led quite hard lives, but their lives would have become a lot harder during the Depression.

For black people the 20s was a hard time, with a lot of discrimination as regards jobs etc. In America's Women' Gail Collins writes:

'African American women of middle age or younger in the NOrth had approximately the same literacy rate as white women their age and were just as likely to send their children to school. But the payoff was much lower for black students. Even those with high school degrees were shut out of clerical and sales jobs in white neighborhoods. Employers refused to hire black women, even though they w ere better educated and worked for less than the pool of available whites. (Addie Hunter, a graduate of an excellent high school in Boston, fought for years to find a white-collar job but wound up working in a factory "color - the reason nobody will give, the reason nobody is required to give, will always be in the way") she concluded. What I mean is that even when you're off the drug completely (went to rehab; no longer using; et cetera) you're a totally different depressed person.

Vicodin is a depressant in and of itself. It works on brain chemicals to suppress reactions to pain which also suppresses reactions to pleasure as well. Since it has such a psychological effect on people it is alot like marijuana use...once you are used to being on Vicodin or marijuana, the world seems to suck alot more when you are not taking it because your brain is more alert and responsive to every little thing.

Situational Depression is a reaction to tough events.  If an individual is faced with being fired or needing to move and they are feeling upset or aggravated, they may find themselves feeling depressed.  More often than not, these feelings of being low and blue pass soon or even after a few weeks, life goes back to normal. 

Still, if depressive feelings continue for several weeks or even months, the depression  may be chemical in nature.  Chemical Depressive Disorder occurs when neurochemistry is altered and the person is not able to react normally.  Chemical Depressive Disorder frequently happens in families and may be traced generationally.  Another cause of Chemical Depression is brain injury.  What might start outas a circumstantial Depressive Disorder may advance into a Chemical Clinical Depression if the situation continues over a long period of time.

One of the influences on Chemical Depressive Disorder is an alteration in neurochemistry. This can happen not only from brain injury, but also from malady or in reaction to stress.  The three neurotransmitters that determine emotions are serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.  These chemical substances rise and fall during the day and can even be influenced by lack of rest, lack of exposure to sun and changes in hormonal levels.  Currently, it is not known if variations in these neurochemicals result in Clinical Depression or if extended Clinical Depression causes changes in neurochemistry levels.  One theory is that long-term Depressive Disorder is a maladaptive coping mechanism to uncomfortable feelings and life events which becomes permanently imprinted on the brain.

Signs

Signs of Depression include feeling gloomy almost every day, not enjoying activities that used to be pleasant, weight variations, changes in sleep, feeling unsatisfied or difficulty thinking, troubles with concentration, feeling tired or run down.  Depressive Disorder can also result in feelings of worthlessness and even suicidal ideation.

In order to be treated by a doctor, symptoms of Clinical Depression must cause  meaningful distress and disability and be present for at least two weeks.  Additionally, mourning due to the recent passing of a loved one is not normally interpreted as  Depressive Disorder that is treated with medicine.

Once in a while feeling down is a natural part of the human experience.  Even so, ongoing feelings of Depression may be signals of a more serious Chemical Depressive Disorder and should be handled by a doctor.  If you or someone you care about is showing the symptoms of ongoing Clinical Depression, please seek assistance.  There are excellent treatment options and assistance is available for the asking.

Try looking on your State website or in the Government section of the phone book for Mental Health Department or Department of Health and Human Services and they should be able to point you in the right direction. 10 Signs That your Brain Chemistry is Out of Balance

Your brain chemistry drives you ? your energy levels, your moods, your thoughts, actions, behaviors, your beliefs, your desires, dreams, and motivations. And in turn these all drive your brain chemistry.

Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, create and reflect your feelings moods, thoughts and behaviors. They are a powerful group of chemicals in the brain that result in physiological and psychological changes in how we experience our lives. All behavior has a corresponding chemical pattern in the brain.

Your behaviors and your experience affect your biochemical profile and your biochemical profile affects your behaviors and your experience. By picking up on the yellow flags that tell you when your brain chemistry is out of balance you can take specific steps to put your self back "at choice" and in charge again.

Here is how you will know that an out of balance brain chemistry is driving your behaviors.

1. You are not happy.

Contentment, happiness, appreciation are emotions not readily available to an out of balanced brain. Practicing appreciation, gratitude and forgiveness can promote optimal brain chemistry.

2. You are stressed.

A neurochemically imbalanced body is stressed ? it is tired and listless, its mind is dull and foggy, it is weak, and it suffers more than it needs to.

3. You do not have insight.

An out of balance brain misperceives. And it misperceives in the direction of the imbalance. It does not have access to accurate perceptions. Because an out of balance brain misperceives it does not have access to insight.

4. You are driven to certain behaviors.

When your brain chemistry is out of balance, you are driven into unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors. You unwittingly begin to engage in activities, behaviors, and lifestyles that create neurochemical chaos in your body. You are not "at choice" - you are not choosing deliberate considered action.

5. You do things that you do not want to do but feel good to you in the short term.

When your brain is out of balance it drives you to behaviors that will keep it out of balance. It seeks its own imbalanced baseline.

6. It feels good to continue doing the same old things that you want to change.

When you seek to establish a new baseline brain chemistry that supports a change you want to make, there are numerous physiological feedback loops that act to keep it at the old baseline. It will feel uncomfortable to change these physiological feedback loops.

The behaviors that keep you out of balance will feel good in the moment even though you may not want to be doing them.

7. You rely on what "feels good" to you as your guide to behavior.

When you have out of balance brain chemistry you can not rely on what feels good to you as your guide for what you should be doing, feeling, thinking, experiencing. You must take deliberate conscious actions that are designed specifically to bring your brain chemistry back into balance.

8. You do not recognize the need to choose a deliberate action designed to balance your brain chemistry.

When you are driven to a behavior, thought, feeling or experience, that is exactly the time that you need not to do it because it will drive you further out of balance. An out of balance brain drives your behaviors and experience in the direction of the imbalance.

9. You believe that you can override your biology.

You alter your brain chemistry, manipulate your neurochemical profile and affect your body?s physiology every day by what you do and don?t eat or think, and how and where you spend your time.

Through your daily behaviors and the environments you create your biochemical profile and this is reflected in the emotions, energy, thoughts, actions, and psychological states that either bring you to peak performance or that block your best functioning. Neurochemicals are not the essence of who we are but they are the physiological brakes or fuel for the fullest expression of the essence of who you are.

10. You think that you cannot change.

You need 3-6 weeks of consistent action to begin to see some noticeable results in your behavior changes. However, the brain seeks to return to the old baseline for about 3-6 months. So when you do not follow through with your changed behavior, the brain will gravitate back to the original unbalanced baseline.

It takes 6-12 months of compliance with the new behavior to affect the enzymatic changes that change the brain chemistry baseline. When the baseline brain chemistry changes you are less subject to day to day drastic swings. The new behaviors that keep an optimal brain chemistry for you then become part of what you naturally do.

You can develop the knowledge, power, and technology to craft your inner and outer worlds in order to overcome the stress, resistance, and friction in them. Through your daily behaviors and the environments in which you spend your time you can create the emotions, energy, thoughts, actions, and psychological states that you want.

You can choose to promote clarity, focus, peace, excitement or you can contribute to confusion, depression, anxiety, and conflict within yourself. The degree to which you have one or the other of these experiences is the degree to which you are in harmony with your body?s physiology or in conflict with it. How close are you to a balanced neurochemistry is the degree to which you will experience peak performance.

Take the time and effort to design and live a life that fosters your optimal brain chemistry. Open the way for optimal development of your personal resources, talents, and dreams.

Optimizing you brain chemistry and neurotransmitter profile can produce phenomenal results in improving your well-being, achieving your dreams, and living the successful, healthy and integrated life of your choice.

Doctors do you think Depression?

is REALLY a chemical imbalance? If that is the case, then how does a stressful event change brain chemistry? Most depressions are caused by a stressful event.

There are definite changes in the way the brain works when a person is depressed:

1. Modern brain scans that can look at how 'hard' the brain is working have shown that some areas of the brain (such as at the front) are not working as well as normal.

2. Depressed patients have higher than normal levels of stress hormones.

3. Various chemical systems in the brain may not be working correctly including one known as the serotonin or 5-HT system.

Antidepressants may help to reverse these changes. Unfortunately there is no brain scan or blood test that can be used to diagnose when a person has a depressive illness. The diagnosis can only be made from the symptoms. Generally speaking a diagnosis of depression will be made if a person has a persistently low mood that significantly influences their everyday life and has been present for two weeks or more, and there are also three or four or more other symptoms of depression.

Stress can lead to you to feeling 'down' and 'miserable'. What is different about a depressive illness is that these feelings last for weeks or months, rather than days. In addition to feeling low most or all of the time, many other symptoms can occur in depressive illness (though not everybody has every one). These include:

-Being unable to gain pleasure from activities that normally would be pleasurable.
-Losing interest in normal activities, hobbies and everyday life.
-Feeling tired all of the time and having no energy.
-Difficulty sleeping or waking early in the morning (though some feel that they can't get out of bed and 'face the world').
-Having a poor appetite, no interest in food and losing weight (though some people overeat and put on weight - 'comfort eating').
-Losing interest in sex.
-Finding it difficult to concentrate and think straight.
-Feeling restless, tense and anxious.
-Being irritable.
-Losing self-confidence.
-Avoiding other people.
-Finding it harder than usual to make decisions.
-Feeling useless and inadequate - 'a waste of space'.
-Feeling guilty about who you are and what you have done.
-Feeling hopeless - that nothing will make things better.
-Thinking about suicide - this is very common. If you feel this way, talk to somebody about it. If you think somebody else might be thinking this way, ask them about it - IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

What causes depression?

-We do not fully understand the causes of depression.
-Genes or early life experiences may make some people vulnerable.
-Stressful life events, such as losing a job or a relationship ending, may trigger an episode of depression.
-Depression can be triggered by some physical illnesses, drug treatments and recreational drugs.

Not Just in the Mind: Depression Treatment

As Fibromyalgia (FM) sufferers we are often made to feel like our pain is “all in your head”, but research has consistently proven that Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression or hypochondria. IT IS REAL!  However, there is a connection between FM and other chronic pain conditions to depression and anxiety.  Treatment is important because both can make FM worse and interfere with symptom management.

There is some debate by medical and mental professionals about what causes what.  The “What came first?  The chicken or the egg” debate translates into “What came first?  The chronic pain or the depression?”  TRUE Fibromyalgia experts, researchers and others know that the chronic pain of FM & overlapping conditions leads to depression and anxiety. 

Fibromyalgia is a common condition in which a person suffers from chronic musculoskeletal pain. There are points called tender points, sometimes all over the body, and these tender and painful points are used as part of the diagnosis of FM. Individuals with FM may also be more susceptible to pain in general. Whenever the tender points are simply touched, they can send sharp pain impulses. Many Fibromyalgia sufferers experience pain all over and some experience pain only in specific regions. It can involve the muscles and the joints. Sometimes, there is so much pain that it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the pain originates.  Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by other overlapping conditions such as chronic myofascial pain (CMP), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), migraine & tension headaches, interstitial cystitis (IC), mitral valve prolapse (MVP), cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety and more.  The symptoms of Fibromyalgia, alone, are wide-ranging and debilitating.  Do they really think that depression and anxiety is the CAUSE for ALL of the above?

Depression is a mental illness characterized by feelings of profound sadness and lack of interest in enjoyable activities. It is a constant low mood that interferes with the ability to function and appreciate things in life. It may cause a wide range of symptoms, both physical and emotional. It can last for weeks, months, or years. People with depression rarely recover without treatment and if you have Fibromyalgia, you may have to fight it for the rest of your life.

Anxiety is a normal state of apprehension, tension, and uneasiness in response to a real or perceived threat.  Although anxiety is considered a normal response to temporary periods of stress or uncertain situations, prolonged, intense, periods of anxiety may indicate an anxiety disorder. Other indicators of an anxiety disorder are anxiety that occurs without an external threat and anxiety that impairs daily functioning.

What can cause depression & anxiety?  Stressful life events, chronic stress, low self-esteem, imbalances in brain chemicals and hormones, lack of control over circumstances (helplessness and hopelessness), negative thought patterns and beliefs, chronic pain, chronic physical or mental illness, including thyroid disease & headaches can ALL cause both.  Little or no social  and familial support can be a main factor in depression for FM patients. Family history of depression & anxiety can also be a factor.

Lack of quality sleep is also believed to have an influence on depression.  Since FM & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients tend to have insomnia and/or other sleep disorders, it stands to reason that poor sleep can lead to depression.

There is a wide variety of medications, vitamins, minerals, herbs and therapies that can help ease the impact of pain, anxiety and depression.  With so many out there, you and your doctor may have to go through the process of trial and error to find what works best for you!

Exercise is not only good for FM, it is also highly beneficial for depression and anxiety.  Recent studies suggest exercise can change your brain chemistry. Exercising can boost your level of serotonin, a brain chemical that is effects mood and pain perception. It can also stimulate the production of endorphins, natural painkillers that can give you an overall feeling of well-being.

Exercise is a great for stress, too. It relieves muscle tension and it gets the heart rate up. The combination makes us more relaxed and alert, which helps us deal with our problems in a calmer and more controlled way.

There are several other methods you can use to combat stress, including: meditation, deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, mental imagery relaxation, relaxation to music, biofeedback, counseling - to help you recognize and release stress.

What is the best 'biology' major?

I have alot of worries and anxieties before going into pre-med/life science studies specifically over what biology major would help the most in preparing me for the MCATs, research experience and medical school admissions. I was a biochemistry major in undergrad. But I can tell you that the best way to prepare for the MCAT is to do plenty of practice exams, and look over sections in the MCAT book(s) if you're using any while you are studying those sections in class.
