Biological Factors That Contribute to Depression

Many people are pre-disposed to depression because of their own biological makeup making their risk of suffering from this condition much greater then those who do not share these risk factors. There are four main biological factors that can increase a persons risk for depression and these include (1) genetic factors, (2) biochemical factors, (3) alterations in hormonal regulation and, (4) sleep abnormalities.

Genetic Factors

Studies done with twins have shown that genetic factors play a role in the development of depressive disorders. There have been a number of studies done that show that the average rate of shared mood disorders among identical twins is 45% to 60%. This means if one twin suffers from depression, or any other mood disorder, there is a 45% to 60% chance that the other twin will also be affected. Contrast this with fraternal twins where the percentage falls of drastically to only 12%.

Moods disorders are inheritable for some people. This also means that those who are genetically susceptible to mood disorders can have an earlier age of onset, a greater rate of suffering other disorders in addition to depression and an increased risk of recurrent illnesses. However, any genetic factors that are present must interact with environmental factors for depression to develop.

Biochemical Factors

The brain contains billions of neurons and is a highly complex organ. There is a lot of evidence that points to the idea that depression is a biological or chemical disorder where central nervous system neurotransmitter abnormalities are a probable cause of clinical depression. These neurotransmitter abnormalities may be the result of inherited or environmental factors, or even of other medical conditions, such as cerebral infarction, hypothyroidism, AIDS, or substance abuse.

Specific neurotransmitters in the brain are believed to be related to mood altered states. It was initially believed that the two main neurotransmitters involved were serotonin and norepinephrine. With new research though it is now thought that depression results from the dysregulation of a number of neurotransmitter systems in addition to serotonin and norepinephrine. The dopamine, acetylcholine, and GABA systems are also believed to be involved in the pathophysiology of major depression.

Alterations in Hormonal Regulation

Although there is still inconclusive evidence that hormones can play a role in depression. The most studied neuroendocrine characteristic that relates to depression has been hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. Evidence of increased cortisol secretion is apparent in 20% to 40% of depressed outpatients and 40% to 60% of depressed inpatients. Results of a dexamethasone suppression test are abnormal in about 50% of patients with depression, which indicates hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis. However, the findings of this test may also be abnormal in people with obsessive-compulsive disorders and other medical conditions. Significantly, patients with psychotic major depression are among those with the highest rates of nonsuppression of cortisol on the dexamethasone suppression test.

Sleep Abnormalities

Sleep electroencephalogram abnormalities may be evident in 40% to 60% of outpatients and up to 90% of inpatients during a major depressive episode. People prone to depression tend to have a pre-mature loss of sleep, slow delta wave sleep and altered rapid eye movement (REM) latency. The phase of REM sleep associated with dreaming occurs earlier in two thirds of people with bipolar and major depressive illnesses. This sign is referred to as reduced REM latency and is consistent with the expected manifestation of an inherited trait. Reduced REM latency and deficits in slow-wave sleep typical persist following recovery from a depressed episode. Data also suggests that depressed patients without this sign are not likely to respond to treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, which suppress early REM sleep.

There are many factors that contribute to depression, many of which are biochemical in nature. Those that are biologically induced can be treated with different prescription drugs but as with anything relating to human emotion and chemical makeup answering one question as to why brings up more questions that remain unanswered.

What is wrong? Is it depression?

ok, background info. Im 14, a girl, and im not aware of any genetic disorders that run in my family.

Whats been happening is that i find it hard to talk to my friends if they do anything to change. like one girl started wearing makeup and she has always made fun of me for wearing like only a little bit of eyeliner. but then she turns around and does the exact opposite. another friend is supposed to go to a program that would require her to go to high school at the college. she wanted me to go, and i said id consider, but i changed my mind when i considered all the things i would miss. she got mad and stopped talking to me. then she decided to bring my religion and everything into the fight. i could deal with the makeup thing, but this really messed me up. i feel achy and tired al the time and im usually very hyper and upbeat. i also feel like the world has turned its back on me.

Is there any hope for me?

BTW im already on Lexipro (spell?) for sleep

I promise you that most teenagers go through exactly this. There are always ups and downs and drama like this during highschool, there's always someone being hypocritical or bitchy, and you just need to weather it. Everyone experiences the feeling that the world's against them at some stage, but there is absolutely and without-a-doubt hope. These things will pass, if now soon then in a few years, when your friends are older and more mature. There will always be people around like this, but they're always larger in number and more intense during your school years.

Learn to rise above it. If people want to be petty and hypocritical and make themselves unhappy, then let them. Don't let yourself get dragged down into it, or you'll end up unhappy too. Pride yourself on being the mature one with better things to do than worry about minor issues like this.

Find someone you can talk to about this, vent about it to your parents, or write it down in a journal, get it out of your system.

I want to get back to my size 10/12 dress size, im now a 14/16 no thanks to the rod, me being lazy, suffer depression and comfort eat etc ive got over £350 worth of excerise stuff in my house and recently bought excersice dvds. only thing i need is wilpower, i want to lose weight but its not enough. help please

Have some friends take some candid photos of you--or a video. Seeing myself as others see me is always a huge shock. And I mean HUGE. Can I be that big? That's motivation.
Start a food log, write down what you eat, what time it was, what else you were doing, how hungry you were, and what emotions you felt. When you see a pattern, try to not turn to food for everything. If you're upset, instead of eating, take a short walk.

Most frequent treatment method for major depression is with the regulation of antidepressant medication. There may also be instances where psychotherapy or counseling is required.

The three most common ways of treating major depression are medication, psychotherapy and electro-convulsive therapy. There is a wide range of different types of antidepressant medication that is available today for individuals that have been diagnosed with major depression. I am being refused tests and diagnosis for severe crippling athritis because of depression.What can I do?

I have severe arthritic pain and can hardly walk. The condition is getting worse. my Gp and a pain specialist are constantly refusing me tests as they say my pain is a matter for a psychiatrist. This is related in my notes by the pain specialist. Changing GP can do no good as I have already done this. What can I do?

Pain can make you feel depressed and depression makes pain harder to deal with. So how do you break out of the vicious circle. First, do you have a diagnosis of arthritis? Is it osteoarthritis? If so, ask a pharmacist whether glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate will interfere with any depression medications you are on. If not, then give them a try. Some people find them helpful.

If you have rheumatoid arthritis then you need to see a rheumatologist and discuss management of your condition with them.

If you have not been diagnosed then ask your gp to do these two simple blood tests, ESR (Erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and CrP (C reactive protein). Both of these are likely to be raised if you have a rheumatoid type condition.

However, there can be a problem where you had pain due to some injury, flare up or whatever and then your brain keeps sensing the pain even when its original cause has gone away. It is sort of like the phantom pain experienced by some amputees. This type of pain does not respond well to painkillers and is something that can be helped by a psychiatrist, if you would be willing to accept its origin.

See if you can get one of your doctors to explain more clearly why they are saying these things to you. Your experience of pain, even if there is no apparent physical cause, may feel just as real to you and even more unpleasant as painkillers may not help much but its treatment may be different.

Abnormal skin sensations are experienced by people with celiac disease which include itching, burning, prickling or tingling. These abnormalities create depressive mood, especially in children. Use of vitamin E is very effective in these cases.

If the vitamins are supplemented by minerals, then the combination can help you to overthrow your depression quickly. So intake of minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium should be considered along with vitamins.

Remember, there is no 'ideal meal' formula for overthrowing glutenated depression. Vitamins and minerals do help, but you need to consult your doctor for deciding which ones and in what proportion. Also, taking vitamins is not the solution for everything. For instance, consumption of excessive alcohol or occasional consumption of gluten loaded food can negate the effectiveness of vitamins. You should take the time to reassure your loved one that they will not be abandoned and are causing no burden on you or your family. Schedule different activities that you know they will enjoy and find ways in which your loved one can contribute to family activities and recognize his or her contributions. Above all, Alzheimer’s patients suffering from depression need reassurance and support from a dedicated caretaker whose first concern is the comfort of their loved one.

At home, throw out any unhealthy foods or foods you have weaknesses for, and don’t buy them again. If they aren’t in the house, you won’t eat them. Let your friends, co-workers, and family know what you are trying to do, so they can support you and not try to tempt you with that after-work drink, dessert after dinner, or by buying unhealthy foods at the grocery store. Visualize yourself achieving your weight-loss goals. Do not let any excuses come into your plan—think ahead to any obstacles you might encounter as you try to lose weight, and plan how you will overcome them. If you make a plan and stick to it, you will reach your goals!

We uncover the first of these unconscious forces by recognizing that the storms in our lives all share a common cause. Each storm, large or small, centers around something that happens to us that we don't want to be happening for whatever reasons. A few quick examples prove this insight, but best success is assured if you will fill in the blanks from your own experience. Imagine a woman caught in an emotional firestorm of anger because she does not want to be treated like that. Or a man who feels trapped by a tormenting depression because he doesn't want what life continues to bring to him. Can we see that these two storms share a common root? Both rise as they do because of our unconscious resistance to something that has already happened.

Whenever we face an unwanted event and find ourselves feeling nothing but resistance, we can discover that this stress-mess is made from our insistence that this should not have happened. And how about when we recall past mistakes, painfully reliving how we fell down -- either a moment ago or ten years back? Aren't we sure that whatever that error may have been -- it shouldn't have taken place?

Which brings us to the following insight that deserves a few moments extra consideration. It feels natural for us to go along with the feeling of not wanting what we are powerless to change! What on earth lies hidden in this strange struggle of ours that compels us to wrestle with what amounts to mental ghosts? After all, once something has happened in our life -- that moment is over; it's gone, done with, finished. Clearly, what was no longer exists in the here and Now. So, we have to ask ourselves, given this understanding that is above dispute, how can something from our own past feel as real and as alive as it does to us in the present moment? The following answer brings us one step closer to living in a world without storms.

Within our mind lingers an untold number of chemically and electrically stored images of the way things were. These mental pictures include complete scenes of every experience past, as well as pleasurable or frightening images of what is yet to come. And these same images are secret storehouses of all the sensations that accompanied them in the moment of their creation. Each one is laden with its original emotional content that pours into us each time we revisit them. To help visualize how this unseen psychic sequence unfolds within, put yourself in the place of this imaginary person -- Barbara -- walking down the street. As Barbara window-shops her eye catches sight of a lace-sleeved lavender blouse on sale in one of her favorite stores. In an instant, Barbara recalls wearing a similar blouse many years ago the night her father passed away. Now, virtually unnoticed, a small wave of regret washes over her. For reasons unknown to her, as she stands there still looking at a blouse she feels sure should be in her closet, she is beginning to think about the last words she had with her father, and how she wishes she would have said something else.

The more Barbara is drawn into these flooding considerations, the more she suffers. And the more unwanted this painful experience becomes, the more she unconsciously resists her mounting turmoil until she is caught in a full-blown storm. Haven't we all been there before? Where a seemingly harmless thought, which we turn over in our mind, becomes a tornado? Well, it need not be like that . . . for any of us!

The only reason we ever find ourselves caught in a psychological storm is because we have been drawn, without knowing it, into identifying with -- actually merging with -- mental images from our past. These images are pre-loaded -- rather like psychological time capsules -- with punishing thoughts and feelings that flood into us the instant we identify with them. As the invisible, but psychically palpable blows from these painful memories pour through on us, we are unconsciously moved to try and resist them -- all of which makes us feel as though we are trapped in a storm about which we can do nothing other than try to escape its lashing!

Once we invite the following insight to become our own, we need never again endure the pounding of such negative states: No storm of mental torment or dark, emotional suffering belongs to you. Any wave of resentment, anxiety, or fear that comes to wash you away is nothing more than a kind of psychic residue left over from who you once were. Not only do these negative states have nothing in common with your True Nature, but they cannot enter into the living Now where this higher consciousness lives.

This same truth can be said in a slightly different way: we cannot be punished by any painful storm when we are grounded in the present moment. The reason for this perfect protection is as pure as it is simple: psychological storms are powerless to push their divisive and destructive forces into the spiritual harbor of Now because, within Its native wholeness, they have no way to remain there. Now let's pull these important lessons together in a short summary.

We have seen that the storms we suffer are not born simply from any particular event that takes place, but rather they rise from an unknown ground in us due to our undetected resistance to them. Further, these unwanted events that we so strongly resist are not the actual events themselves. What we secretly struggle against in these moments are unwanted images of that event fashioned by ourselves. This occurs, for example, when we imagine a fearful future, or see ourselves thrown for a social loss of some sort. In these moments we suffer, as we do, because we are looking at what we don't want to see. And then, because we don't know that we have been tricked into giving these negative fantasies our attention, we try to imagine ways to escape their punishing presence. The more we struggle to get away, the more attention we inadvertently lend to what we wish would disappear! It's a great paradox: not wanting to look upon what is bothering us keeps what is bothering us in plain view! But now we are beginning to see our way out of this trap.

From this moment forward, whenever some dark storm appears in us we must neither run from it, nor stand there and hate what we think is happening. Instead we must awaken to ourselves, bring ourselves back into the Now and quietly, deliberately, drop any image that our thought-nature presents within us to justify the brewing conflict. Learning to dismiss the storms that sink our chances to be happy takes dedicated inner work, but you may be assured such powers are possible. Your True Nature already dwells beyond the reach self-wrecking storms. Join it; begin Now!
