Manic Depression and Genetics

Research into manic depression, more formally called bipolar disorder, has been hindered, according to many in the scientific community due to the lack of animal models upon which to base studies.

Until now that is. Scientists have been able to create a genetically engineered defect in a specific gene which may play a leading role in causing mood disorders, like manic depression. The gene is known as glutamate receptor 6 – referred to as GluR6 – and has long been associated with manic depression.

Scientists knew that the gene was related to manic depression but were unsure of the exact mechanism. Not only that, but the gene encoding for the GluR6 receptor has not only been linked to manic depression, but also to the tendency of some individuals to consider suicide while taking antidepressant drugs in a separate pharmacogenetic study.

Interestingly enough, individuals who suffer with manic depression are the most susceptible to antidepressant-induced states of restlessness.

In the new study, scientists utilized mice to further examine the issue. The scientists used mice with the GluR6 gene missing, comparing them to a control group of mice who had the gene.

Both groups of mice underwent a series of tests specifically created to imitate the symptoms of manic episode of manic depression. The researchers discovered that the mice with the Glu6R gene missing displayed many of the symptoms of mania.

Not only were these mice more active in several tests, they also displayed more anxiety and more behavior traits that could be classified as risk taking and less behavior traits that could be called despair-type behavior. These mice without the GluR6 also displayed more aggressive behavior, another character trait of a manic episode of manic depression.

The scientists also administered biochemical tests on these mice, the results of which suggested that the GluR6 gene may also play a unique role in actually regulating some of the symptoms of mania.

Now that researchers have genetically engineered this type of laboratory mouse, they’ll be better able to study manic depression. This study also opens the door for further studies that may very well lead to new treatments.

Manic depression is a mental health disorder characterized by erratic swings in mood. Individuals with this health issue, most recently renamed bipolar disorder, are subject not only to depression, but also episodes of mania. These manic episodes involve high energy expenditure, sleeplessness for several days sometimes, as well as rapid speech, racing thoughts and feelings of grandiosity. Those individuals experiencing a manic episode may also display psychotic behavior, such as hallucinations.

Several mood stabilizing drugs are currently available for the treatment of manic depression. Individuals with manic depression are also encouraged to take a series of behavioral therapy as well.

Is this Manic Depression?

I have had a condition for the last year and a half, and I don't seem to be getting the answers that I would like. My "symptoms", if you will, are states of a very happy and peaceful feeling, and no, i do not do drugs alcohol and the such; and moments about 3-4 weeks later where I use self harm such as eraser burning, pin-tracking, scratching with finger nails, and on one occasion i used a razor blade from a pencil sharpener...

So is it or isn't it? I have heard that i am not supposed to self diagnose

you know, you shouldn't get diagnosed on yahoo! answers, either. i suggest you see a professional who can correctly diagnose you.

Mental Depression Disorders Quotes:

Worry is a complete cycle of inefficient thought revolving about a pivot of fear. By Author Unknown Find out about Mental Depression Disorders

Mental Health Disorder Information

There are many different types of mental health disorders, any of which could affect any one of us at any time of our lives regardless of our age, gender, background or status. The most common type of mental health disorders are anxiety and depression related disorders.

Certainly, all of us can experience anxiety at times, especially when we have a particularly difficult situation to deal with, like taking a driving test for example, or going for a job interview, but when the anxiety is so severe that it disrupts our daily lives, then it could be that we are suffering from an anxiety- related mental health disorder.

Similarly, each of us know what its like to feel a bit down in the dumps, we may even say we are depressed, but true depression is where the symptoms dont subside after a short period of time, they persist and are severe enough to impair our ability to carry out our normal routines.

The following list represents some of the more commonly known mental health disorders with a brief description of their typical symptoms.

Phobias

A phobia is an anxiety related disorder characterised by extreme fear, perhaps fear of a situation, an object, a place or a creature and this fear is completely out of proportion to the norm. There are literally hundreds of known phobias but common ones include fear of public places, confined spaces, flying, spiders, and fear of heights. A sufferer will try to avoid their fear at all costs, and when faced with it, will experience severe anxiety which can include palpitations, nausea and panic attacks.

Panic attacks

A panic attack can be a terrifying experience. Someone experiencing a panic attack is engulfed by overwhelming fear and panic often without warning. Various physical symptoms can accompany a panic attack, which include difficulty breathing, trembling, palpitations, dizziness, sweating, and nausea and a feeling of impending death.

Post traumatic stress

Post traumatic stress can follow an intensely disturbing experience such as a car crash, violence or rape, being in extreme danger or basically any event that causes severe psychological distress. The symptoms include constantly reliving the event in the mind through flashbacks and nightmares, disturbed sleep, anxiety and depression.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety related disorder manifesting itself in irrational and obsessive thoughts that spark illogical rituals and behaviours or compulsions, for example, constantly thinking (obsessing) that your hands are not clean causing you to repeatedly wash your hands (a compulsion). Other examples include excessive cleaning, checking and rechecking that doors are locked and windows closed etc. Someone with OCD can feel intensely anxious if they dont carry out their rituals so performing them is a way to relieve their feelings of anxiety and distress.

Depression

Depression is more than a period of the blues. Clinical depression can be said to exist when the symptoms of depression persist for longer than a couple of weeks and are severe enough to interfere with normal daily routines. There is also a loss of pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed. There are many symptoms associated with depression including feelings of sadness and despair, lethargy, sleep disturbances, changes in eating patterns, sudden changes in behaviour and mood, anxiety, guilt, and thoughts of death and suicide. We can all experience some of these symptoms at times but when truly depressed these symptoms dont just subside, they persist.

Bipolar disorder (manic depression)

Bipolar disorder is characterised by extreme fluctuations in mood with episodes of euphoria and mania alternating with episodes of depression and despair. During a manic phase the bipolar sufferer may need very little sleep, may think and talk very quickly, can be highly creative, appear completely confident and without inhibition, they could leave their job, go on a spending spree or behave in other potentially destructive ways. During a depressive episode they may experience strong feelings of hopelessness and despair and find themselves unable to muster the energy to do even the simplest of tasks. They may also withdraw from social situations and even contemplate suicide. Bipolar is a lifelong disorder affecting around 1 percent of the population.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a particularly severe kind of mental health disorder, which is characterised by hallucinations, delusions, and strange behaviour and beliefs.

Conclusion

Mental health disorders are complex so making an accurate diagnosis yourself can be difficult, many people will present with symptoms of more than one type of disorder and many of the symptoms of each disorder overlap with each other. Consequently, it is important to seek the right help. In the first instance you should speak to your doctor who will be able to make full medical assessment and guide you towards an appropriate course of treatment.

Sadly, many people are afraid of seeking help and as such, will suffer in silence which can be an isolating and lonely experience with potentially devastating effects. Fortunately, mental health disorders are treatable and those who do seek help can go on to lead normal lives once again.

can depression lead to psychosis or other mental disorders?

I'm starting to believe this but if anyone knows for sure, let me know.

I suffer from major depression, but it never reached the point of psychosis. The answer to your question is that when depression becomes very severe, it can lead to a state of psychotic depression. In addition to many of the symptoms of depression, one can actually hallucinate or have irrational delusions.

Of course, depression can co-exist with other mood disorders, for example, anxiety, panic, and OCD. I have some anxiety and OCD.

If nothing else is helping you (like psychotherapy, alternative health, traditional antidepressants), it sounds like you should contact your doctor ASAP. I don't know what you are experiencing right now, but if necessary you should consider a trip to hospital ER.

In my own case, many years of traditional antidepressants and combinations did almost nothing to help me. I had to go on lamictal (usually for bipolar disorder) and abilify (for depression, bipolar and schizophrenia). This combination of meds helped me. I am not suggesting you take this combo since we all react differently to psych meds. However, try to find a shrink who does their research and thinks "outside the box." He or she might come up with a med or meds that more conventional shrinks never thought of.

This is probably obvious, but make sure you are seeing a psychiatrist, who knows much more about psych meds than regular doctors.

EDIT: Here's a link you might want to check out. http://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/psychotic-depression

Manic Depression Disorders
Manic Depression Disorders Incredible News

whats the best way to deal with having bipolar disorder / manic depression ?

i have recently been told i suffer from bipolar disorder is there any tips people can give me on how to handle it im a bit scared .
becase i was resently diagnosed and also suffer from anorexia nervosa it makes it slightly harder

Ok try This

I have come up with seven ways to assist you in helping to eliminate or reduce your depression.

1) Eat properly : This means, most of all, remember TO eat! With depression, it seems that you either don't want to eat at all or you gorge yourself constantly! The main thing that is important is that you eat healthy nutrients for your body in order for it to help to get back into balance. If you have trouble eating large meals then eat small meals divided up during the day. Remember to eat green vegetables, chicken, fish etc. You need your protein and especially your vitamin B which helps with stress. You can also take a supplement if your doctor doesn't contraindicate it.

2) Get enough sleep: Again, with depression, usually the norm is that you either sleep too little or too much. What we are looking for here is a happy medium! Both too little and too much sleep can make you feel even more depressed! If you aren't tired or you have repetitive thoughts running around in your head, try to read prior to going to bed, watch TV, exercise before bed so that you are tired. Take a hot bath, have your husband or partner give you a massage, use relaxation techniques. Try anything. Remember, don't lie awake in bed if you can't sleep. Get up and do something and then try lying down again. That way you only associate bed with sleep.

3) Get outside: Why? because that puts you back in the world of the living! It is especially helpful for me to go out to the woods and take in all of the scenery with all of the sights and sounds. There is something about hearing birds chirping that helps. Sunshine helps depression so get out in the sun and let it do it's work! Breathe in the fresh air. Even if you have no desire to get off of your sofa or out of your bed, believe me, I have been there and I understand, trust me, you absolutely need to get outside! Go do an errand that needs to be done, even if it is just a small one. You CAN do it if you try!

4) Exercise: Ok, I KNOW that you have heard this one! I used to think "yeah, right! I can't even get the strength to stand up from my chair but you want me to exercise?!!" I hear you loud and clear, but before you completely disregard it, let me inform you that exercise releases endorphins that naturally reduce depression so that it scientifically does help you! When I say exercise, I don't mean that you have to start an aerobics class or anything that intense!! I am talking about just walking around the block to start with..or as far as you can tolerate the first time. Try to increase your endurance and distance every time you walk. You can also try the Wii fitness, if you have it. It can be quite helpful because it offers Yoga as an exercise, which I happen to use. The main point is get your body moving! It may be painful at first..but you definitely will see a difference in the end.

5) Use Relaxation Techniques: If you have not learned how to relax or any easy relaxation techniques, there are many videos out there that will walk you through a full body relaxation and it is something that you can also do for yourself. One example of this is to start at the top of your body, ( your head) tense by the count of three and relax by the count of three, and continue this with every muscle of your body down to your toes until you feel physically relaxed.
Relaxation also applies to whatever it is you do that is your passion. You may not be "feeling" it right now, but attempt to try it. Going through the motions can sometimes be helpful. Write in a journal, paint, go fishing, listen to music, dance...whatever it is to you that can give you peace of mind, even for a moment. Go to your "place of peace" or an imaginary place that you feel safe, secure and free of stress. Basically, it means try to imagine yourself in a place where you feel the most comfortable and safe. Imagine it and memorize it to the fullest detail. This will be helpful for you when you get stressed out. You can mentally take yourself back to that place quickly with practice!

6) Pet a pet: Sound simple? Well, it is! Research has shown that people who have pets are less stressed. Think about how relaxing it is to pet a cat or dog. They love you unconditionally and only want to please you. What more could you want? More and more hospitals, nursing homes, etc. are allowing "pet therapy" for their residents because they realize it's value. Try it for yourself. You will be glad you did!

7) Act "As if..": Most people who are in any type of recovery program knows only too well what this saying means! To explain it.. it means even if you are feeling completely depressed, try as hard as you can to act "as if" you aren't depressed. Go through the motions of your daily life. It is important to keep up your routine. Depressed people tend to get out of their normal routine and find it difficult to resume it sometimes. This does not mean that you will automatically feel completely wonderful and not depresse

Al though this illness is completely curable, bipolar disorder is not easy to diagnose and in some instance, a person with this depressive disorder may suffer for a long period prior to its diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of Bipolar Disorder

The reasons of bipolar disorder have not yet been exactly determined. According to the studies and researches, this mental disorder is due to a combination of factors such as genetic, neurochemical, and environmental.

  • Genetic causes of bipolar disorder

It is reported that about 80% of bipolar disorder is inherited or occur due to certain genetic factors. In other words, a person is more is likely to get this mental illness if he has a:

    • Family member with mood disorder like depression
    • Parents with bipolar disorder
    • Twin brother or sister with bipolar disorder
  • Biological causes of bipolar disorder
    • Over emission of stress hormones such as cortisol
    • Atypical hyperactiveness in brain's parts that are related to emotion as well as movement coordination and low bustle in brain's parts that are related to inhibition, attention, judgment, and concentration
    • A person with a family history of bipolar disorder
    • Brain's unusual serotonin chemistry
  • Environmental causes of bipolar disorder
    • Increased usage of alcohol and drugs
    • Hormonal problems
    • Substance abuse
    • Seasonal factors

Types and symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is classifies into four different types such as Bipolar I Disorder (Mania), Bipolar Disorder II (Hypomania), and Cyclothymia. In fact, the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder vary depending on the type of this disorder.

  • Bipolar Disorder I symptoms
    • Irritability
    • Excessive talk
    • Magnified self-esteem
    • Impulsiveness
    • Unusual energy
    • Highly distracted
    • Impaired judgment
  • Bipolar Disorder II symptoms
    • Fatigue
    • feeling sad as well as hopelessness
    • Mental and physical indolence
    • Weight variations
    • Tendency to commit suicide

The symptoms of Cyclothymia are less severe when compared to other types of bipolar disorders.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The earlier the bipolar disorder is diagnosed, the more effective would be its treatment. A variety of options are available for curing this disease, from medication and counseling to psychotherapy.

Ole! Seniors Choosing Nursing Homes in Mexico

As millions of baby boomers reach retirement age and U.S. health care costs soar, Mexican nursing home managers expect more American seniors to head south in coming years.

Mexico's proximity to the USA, low labor costs and warm climate make it attractive, although residents caution that quality of care varies greatly in an industry that is just getting off the ground there.

Here's more:

After Jean Douglas turned 70, she realized she couldn't take care of herself anymore. Her knees were giving out, and winters in Bandon, Oregon, were getting harder to bear alone. Douglas was shocked by the high cost and impersonal care at assisted living facilities near her home. After searching the Internet for other options, she joined a small but steadily growing number of Americans who are moving across the border to nursing homes in Mexico, where the sun is bright and the living is cheap.

For $1,300 a month--a quarter of what an average nursing home costs in Oregon--Douglas gets a studio apartment, three meals a day, laundry and cleaning service, and 24-hour care from an attentive staff, many of whom speak English. She wakes up every morning next to a glimmering mountain lake, and the average annual high temperature is a toasty 79 degrees. "It is paradise," says Douglas, 74. "If you need help living or coping, this is the place to be. I don't know that there is such a thing back (in the USA), and certainly not for this amount of money."

An estimated 40,000 to 80,000 American retirees already live in Mexico, many of them in enclaves such as San Miguel de Allende or the Chapala area, says David Warner, a University of Texas public affairs professor who has studied the phenomenon. There are no reliable data on how many are living in nursing homes, but at least five such facilities are on Lake Chapala.

"You can barely afford to live in the United States anymore," said Harry Kislevitz, 78, of New York City. A stroke victim, he moved to a convalescent home on the lake's shore two years ago and credits the staff with helping him recover his speech and ability to walk. "Here you see the birds, you smell the air, and it's delicious," Kislevitz said. "You feel like living."

Many expatriates are Americans or Europeans who retired here years ago and are now becoming more frail. Others are not quite ready for a nursing home but are exploring options such as in-home health care services, which can provide Mexican nurses at a fraction of U.S. prices.

Retirement homes are relatively new in Mexico, where the aging seniors usually live with family. There is little government regulation. Some places have suddenly gone bankrupt, forcing American residents to move. Some Mexican homes have rough edges, such as peeling paint or frayed sofas, that would turn off many Americans.

"I don't think they're for everyone," said Thomas Kessler, whose mother suffers from manic depression and lives at a home in Ajijic. "But basically, they've kept our family finances from falling off a cliff."

Residents such as Richard Slater say they are happy in Mexico. Slater came to Lake Chapala four years ago and now lives in his own cottage at the Casa de Ancianos, surrounded by purple bougainvillea and pomegranate trees.

He has plenty of room for his two dogs and has a little patio that he shares with three other American residents. He gets 24-hour nursing care and three meals a day, cooked in a homey kitchen and served in a sun-washed dining room. His cottage has a living room, bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom and a walk-in closet.

For this Slater pays $550 a month, less than one-tenth of the going rate back home in Las Vegas. For another $140 a year, he gets full medical coverage from the Mexican government, including all his medicine and insulin for diabetes.

"This would all cost me a fortune in the United States," said Slater, a 65-year-old retired headwaiter.

On a recent afternoon, lunch at the Casa de Ancianos consisted of vegetable soup, beet salad, Spanish rice, baked dogfish stuffed with peppers, garlic bread and a choice of four cakes and two Jell-O salads. Slater's neighbor doesn't like Mexican food, so a nursing home employee cooks whatever she wants on a stove beside her bed.

Like many retirees, Slater has satellite television, so he doesn't miss any American news or programs. When he wants to see a movie or go shopping downtown, the taxi ride is only $2 or $3. Guadalajara, a culturally rich city of four million people, is just 30 miles away.

For medical care, Slater relies on the Mexican Social Security Institute, or IMSS, which runs clinics and hospitals nationwide and allows foreigners to enroll in its program even if they never worked in Mexico or paid taxes to support the system. He recently had gallbladder surgery in an IMSS hospital in Guadalajara, and he paid nothing.

Many of the nursing home employees speak English, and so does Slater's doctor.

The Casa de Ancianos began accepting foreigners in 2000 as part of an effort to raise extra money, director Marlene Dunham said. It built the cottages especially for the Americans and uses the income received from them to subsidize the costs of the 20 Mexican residents at the home.

The program was so successful that the nursing home has plans for 12 more cottages, a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi and a gazebo with picnic area. The nursing home now advertises on the Internet and through pamphlets distributed in town. Some U.S. companies have also begun investing in assisted living facilities in Mexico, said Larry Minnix, president of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, which represents 5,800 nursing homes and related services.

However, Minnix cautioned that lax government regulation poses dangers at smaller homes.

"It's the same danger you have of going across the border looking for cheap medications," Minnix said. "If you don't know what you're getting, and you're not getting it from people you trust, then you've got an accident waiting to happen."

Since many nursing homes are run out of private homes, regulation by state health departments is often spotty. Managers such as Beverly Ward of Casa Nostra and Maura Funes of El Paraiso, both in Ajijic, said that Mexican officials inspect them only once a year, unlike U.S. inspectors, who may visit a home several times a year.

The U.S. Embassy said it had no record of complaints against Mexican nursing homes, but some residents in the Lake Chapala area reported bad experiences at now-defunct homes.

The first home that Jean Douglas lived in after she moved from Oregon was staffed by "gossips and thieves," she said. It went out of business. Irene Chiara of Los Angeles also lived in a home that was shut down by Jalisco state authorities.

"It was filthy, and the food was very bad. It was all made in the microwave," she said.

Some Mexican managers also underestimate the costs and difficulty of running a retirement home. Two hotels turned into assisted living facilities, The Spa in San Miguel de Allende and The Melville in the Pacific Coast city of Mazatlán, recently abandoned the business, their managers said.

"It was very expensive to run it," said Luis Terán, manager of The Melville. Some managers said they were especially selective when admitting foreign residents, to make sure they'll be able to pay. Medicare, Medicaid, the Department of Veterans Affairs and most U.S. insurance companies will not cover care or medicine as long as patients are outside the USA.

Some American residents said they had doubts about the quality of Mexican medical facilities and would go back to the USA if they became seriously ill. Jim May, 74, a resident of the Casa de Ancianos, said he recently decided to move to Texas to be closer to Veterans Affairs hospitals.

The language barrier can be daunting, and Mexican food can be very different, some residents said.

Some residents said they miss home and find it hard to make friends with Mexican residents. "It's a very nice place, but it's lonesome," said Polly Coull, 99, of Seminole, Fla., a resident at Alicia's Convalescent Nursing Home in Ajijic.

Mexican entrepreneurs are doing their best to prepare for a tide of Americans. In the Baja Peninsula town of Ensenada, the Residencia Lourdes opened in 2003, offering care for patients with Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia. The towns around Lake Chapala have at least five small retirement homes. Most of them opened in the last five years and house from one to 25 foreigners. The largest, Alicia's Convalescent Nursing Home, consists of four renovated homes, one of them specializing in stroke victims and another for Alzheimer's patients. Prices range from $1,000 to $1,500 a month and include everything except medicine and adult diapers. The rooms are outfitted in Mexican style, with murals, hand-carved beds, arched ceilings lined with brick and individual patios.

In other American enclaves, in-home healthcare services have sprung up to serve the retirees. In Rosarito, just south of the U.S. border, INCARE provides nursing aides to retirees starting at $8.33 an hour, less than half the cost of the same service in nearby San Diego.

Developers of independent living facilities for seniors are also beginning to look to Mexico. A Spanish-U.S. venture is building Sensara Vallarta, a 250-unit condominium complex aimed at Americans age 50 and older in the Pacific Coast resort of Puerto Vallarta. And in the northern city of Monterrey, El Legado is marketing itself as a "home resort" for seniors.

Academics and government officials are beginning to take notice. In March, the University of Texas at Austin held a forum for developers, hospital officials, insurance companies and policymakers to discuss health care for retirees in Mexico.

"With the right facilities in place, Mexico could give (American retirees) a better quality of life at a better price than they could find in the United States," says Flavio Olivieri, a member of Tijuana's Economic Development Council, which is seeking funding from Mexico's federal government to build more retirement homes, including senior apartments. "We think this could be a very good business as these baby boomers reach retirement age," he says.

Heavy thoughts bring on physical maladies; when the soul is oppressed so is the body. By Martin Luther Find out about Bipolar Depression Forums

Understanding Depression Cycles Among Bodybuilders and Athletes

Whether among adults, teenagers or children, depression is a medical condition primarily caused by imbalances of natural chemicals supplied to the brain. The imbalances make a person to constantly experience feelings of loneliness, negativity, sadness, and de-motivation. These feelings have been realized to occur mostly among young individuals who hardly engage in any physical exercise, from bodybuilding to mild fitness exercises. It could some mild brief experience among most people or it can last for extended durations from weeks to years becoming a serious condition in some people. The causes of extended depression cycles include stress, disillusionment, disappointment, natural occurrences, and disasters or even be triggered by nothing tangible at all.

Depression cycles can occur among people of all ages, but it is more lethal in teenagers and very young children. When young people suffer depression disorders, their parents wonder what caused it, and more importantly, how to treat it. Depression is a treatable condition. Medical research has established that the most effective treatments for depression are Neuro-Linguistic based Programming techniques.

It was the common perception traditionally that younger people cannot suffer from depression. It is however possible to have depression across all ages and in young people it is especially triggered by factors like relationship breakups, lack of exercises and proper training regimens, serious illnesses, tragic loss in the family, a change of schools, divorce in the family, physical and psychological abuse among others. Actually, research has shown that in some individuals, depression may have no external trigger. Acute depression cases may run in family such that if parents are prone to depression, their offspring are very likely to suffer from it too.

Depression comes in various forms and unfortunately depression in children is a major form depression. This type totally obstructs a child's ability to live, enjoy life or even engage in the basically normal activities like his or her peers. Still, young people may suffer mild depression usually called Dysthymic Disorder (DD). DD is also a long-term form of depression but has less severe symptoms as compared to the major depression for. The third form of depression to which children and teens are susceptible, is manic-depression also called bipolar disorder. This form of depression is mainly characterized by acute mood shifts ranging from extreme incidental happiness to extreme uncalled for sadness.

Symptoms of young people's depression make it harder to diagnose and treat because they vary from those displayed by adults. Young people with depression do not necessarily feel sad like adults do, rather, their constant irritability and temper is the biggest signs or indicator of depression. Most young people suffering from depression have difficulty in concentrating, sleeping and maintaining a discussion with adults. They always feel exhausted and disinterested in group activities. As a result, they perform poorly at school, make no friends and have constant disciplinary problems at home or school. Persistent untreated depression cycles in teens ultimately leads them to alcohol and drug abuse as they try to escape from their depression triggers.

While attempting to treat depression in young people the first thing to remember is that, depression is not a person's fault. It can be treated and prevented from recurring. Treatment is done through counseling, therapy or use of antidepressant medication, and lots of exercises, which keep the mind busy and healthy, as well as few heart related problems. Group psychotherapy is especially helpful to young people where common experiences are shared. Today, there are hundreds of online forums where depressed teens can get information or group therapies.

Do you think a person with psychiatric disorder can understand others with psychiatric disorder better ?

I strongly feel so. May not be necessarily in all cases, but at least for those with Bipolar disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Phobia I have experienced this. Not only that, when they are cured, or when there is phase of absence of symptoms, they can informally help the patients either by working with psychiatrists , or by answering their questions in forums etc. This may sound exaggeration but sometimes I feel they can do better counseling than the experienced and trained counselor! What do you think?

Oh, I think so, absolutely. a psychiatrist or a counselor can never say they've been there, because if they had severe mental illness, they probably wouldn't be holding down a professional job anymore (except in rare cases). Psychiatrists really are there only to help you adjust your meds, and counselors can help teach you techniques, like breathing, and meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy, but other people with psychiatric disorders can offer understanding, something you can't get anywhere else. Even my own husband was more understanding about my knee I twisted badly last week (and it still hurts) than he is about my life-threatening bipolar. Well, he used to be a football player, and has had other injuries, so he understands that, he has never had depression like I get it (ok, it is mixed moods).

Sometimes other psychiatric patients tell other people what to do about their meds, though, even tell people who have bipolar or schizophrenia to go off their meds, and that can be dangerous. So that's my misgiving about it. And some patients have substance abuse problems or personality disorders and victimize other patients - I helped run a drop in center for awhile, and this one guy made incest jokes all the time, because he knew I was a sex abuse victim. He did it on purpose - some sick thing in him, he needed to stir the pot.

Mostly, I think it is great when people who have psych problems help out other people with the same problems. You know what doctors and counselors are good, what help is available, etc. & are more understanding.

Manic Depression Family Quotes:

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves. By Edmund Hillary Find out about Manic Depression Family

Defining Manic Depression

Manic depression or Bipolar depression is actually considered as one of the worst type of depression that people usually suffer from.

Characterized by sudden and extreme changes in their mood, Manic depression is said to be called as such because manic = mania refers to the 'ups' while depression refers to the 'downs'.
A lot of people actually experience erratic changes in their moods, some times, these so-called mood swings may not just be caused by PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or stress. Doctors actually have diagnosed mood swings as a common symptom of depression.

But when these so-called mood swings have gone to utmost absurdity, from getting irked even by the littlest or simplest of thins like not getting your favorite ice cream flavor, this may not be just a sign of brattiness, but when getting irked means you'll cuss and swear on the ice cream vendor and throw absurd tantrums, this may already be the start of Manic depression. The so-called 'manic' or 'ups' in Manic depression is described as to be the times when a person suffering from Manic depression may experience overly high periods, consisting of heightened energy, a sudden outburst of euphoric mood, extreme irritability, thoughts racing as well as aggressive behavior.
According to therapists, someone suffering from Manic depression may have these so-called manic 'periods' wherein sudden outbursts of euphoric and elevated mood swings may actually go through this for as long as not just a day, in can actually go on for as long as one week, even longer than that.

When it comes to the so-called 'low' or 'down' periods, as its name suggests can actually bring someone who is suffering from Manic depression may experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from actual depression. People who are suffering from Manic depression may actually experience episodes showing a depressed state of mind - a feeling of worthlessness and being unloved may start to corrupt the individual's mind. Various symptoms, showing guilt, extreme sadness, anxiety attacks, feeling of not belonging, extreme pessimism and obvious loss for pleasure. According to therapists, an individual who is depressed. consistently for more than a week can officially be diagnosed as someone who is suffering from Manic depression.

In spite of being one of the most common, yet severe type of depressive disorder, Manic depression, according to doctors can actually be treated. There's no reason to worry too much about it, just follow the proper procedures that the therapist will instruct you to do, take the proper prescribed medications as well as the proper dosage in order to help you (or your friend or love one) overcome Manic depression before it becomes too late. Also, individuals who are suffering from Manic depression should always be able to see their therapists on a regular basis so as to be able to release their pent up emotions to some one who can interpret and understand what they're going to a lot better as compared to "normal" people.

Although positive results for a Manic depressive patient can still be achieved from natural alternatives, a proper and a more lasting relief from Manic depressive symptoms can still be best acquired through seeing cognitive behavior therapists. Contrary to some beliefs, when it comes to psychiatric treatments, psychiatrists, preferably cognitive behavior therapists are still the best ones to consult for Manic depression, as well as the ones who'll most probably be able to cure Manic depression.

Anyone out there being treated for manic depression?

I have written on this site regarding a friends son who's been suffering from manic depression about l5 years possibly(Bipolar)he has all the symptoms. His depressive states are getting longer,he has cut himself off from his family saying he just wants to be alone and doesn't want to talk to anyone. He has suicidal thoughts all the time and says, every day he wakes up feeling empty and in hell.He has rejected anti-depressants,says they do nothing(but has only taken them for a few days). He has no self worth, can't mix with people. Was recently emotionally slaughtered in a relationship which has completely wiped out any self esteem he may have built up.Anyone out there who can tell us what to do next.He can't see any help out there. His parents are so desperate, sectioning him is being considered,as he won't go willingly for help and they fear for his safety.Anyone been there, what happened to you and how did you get help. They don't want to section him but don't know what else to do.

I have been treated for manic depression for over 10years now, I have just been put on anti-depressants for the umpteenth time, I also felt like there was no light at the end of the tunnel. Tell your friend's son that if he wants to talk to someone who won't try to 'shink' him then he can email me. I had the councelling a couple of times and didn't find it that helpful, but I have a great support network at home.
All your friends have to do is be there for him when he finds a way through the darkness inside. He needs understanding not sectioning, I do understand that it would be a last resort but they should think very long and hard about.
I know it is hard on your friends and they should also try and find someone they can talk to so they find a way to help him and to cope with all the possible outcomes.

Good Luck with everything and I hope he finds a way through the darkness.

Fear is faith that it won't work out. By Sister Mary Tricky Find out about Manic Depression Facts

Top 3 Types Of Depression Faced By People Today

Everyone in this world has suffered from depression at some point in their lives. It is almost impossible to find a person who has never experienced sadness or misery in his or her life. With life becoming more demanding in today's competitive world, more and more people are feeling stressed and worried out. This then leads many to become depressed if they are unsuccessful in achieving their goals. The severity of the depression depends on various environmental factors that contribute to one's stress. The two most distinct types of depression are depressive disorder, also known as major depression, and dysthymic disorder. Another type of depression that is common is bipolar disorder, or manic depression.

Major depression, or depressive disorder, is a mixture of feelings that inhibits the person from dealing with normal or daily activities in a regular manner. This is the type of depression that many associate with clinical depression, and is usually related to the subject when depression is first mentioned. Those with severe cases usually find it difficult to get through the day, and often have problems getting out of bed in the morning.

Dysthymia disorder is a condition that can last for two or more years, but has way milder symptoms compared to major depression. Dysthymia is often referred to as chronic depression. It prevents the sufferer from functioning like a normal person or excelling in his or her talents. In addition, those with dysthymia will often have sporadic episodes of depressive disorder.

The specific symptoms of dysthymic disorder include restless sleep, or excessive sleeping, a lack of energy or feeling of fatigue, a sense of hopelessness, low self-esteem, and difficulty making simple decisions. Due to the fact that dysthymia has only a few symptoms compared to that of major depression, it is much more likely to go untreated and ignored. The symptoms also tend to be more resistant to regular forms of treatment.

Manic depression, or bipolar disorder, has several cycles of mania and depression symptoms. Mania is known as sporadic periods of overexcitement, delusions, or overly extreme responses. It is also known to include violence if the condition is very severe. The manic "episodes" as they are called, can last anywhere from one day to one week. The person will show an elevation in self-esteem, lesser need for sleep, and they will usually react with impulse purchases or risky behavior. They are also more talkative than usual. In the most extreme cases, hospitalization is needed to prevent them from harming themselves or other people around them.

Each form of depression has its own requirement for treatment and ways of approaching the issue. Many researchers feel that it is genetic and is likely to affect a patient if their parents or other relatives have been diagnosed with a similar condition. However, depression can also happen to those with no medical history of depression in the family.

One is also capable of being diagnosed with depression over multiple times. Many people go through their entire lives normally until one misfortunate event takes place which ignites their repressed feelings that have been bottled up over the years. Also, some are aware of their condition but only wait until their sadness and hurt is too hard to bear before deciding to seek help. This is unhealthy for one's mental health and overall well being. Instead, medical help or advice should be sought for in advance to help one alleviate the severity of the condition, so as to put the patient back in control of his or her life again.

Therefore, if you think that you may be suffering from depression, tell someone. Seeking help is the first step, and there are many effective treatments out there that can help you enjoy a better life. Many avoid treatment because they are worried that they will have to rely on medication for the rest of their lives. While this is true for some, it is not always necessary if your case is a minor one. Many people are able to stop medication after intervals of dosages after they have managed to learn how to cope better. Certain rounds of therapy may also be required depending on your case. Thus, understanding the top 3 types of depression faced by people today helps you identify the potential reasons for your unhappiness in life.

Relationship dilema...?

I split up with my husband 2 years ago, he developed manic depression and lied about everything and anything. In the last 6 months weve not had a single row and have stayed good friends for our little boys sake. We made one rule and that was if either of us started seeing someone we would tell the other straight away. He goes out most nights and has had loads of texts from girls etc but denyed it, I have now just found a la senza underwear receipt in his wallet and am totally gutted hes not been honest. I know for an absolute fact it wasnt for a family member etc
I want to tell him straight but I shouldnt have looked in his wallet. What do I do ? I just can't stand the fact I know hes lying. How can I make him be honest? I wouldnt mind if he was just honest and he knows that.
I dont want him back but the fact I know hes lying is making me so cross we will be rowing again and our child will suffer.

Quick statistic: when men open their mouth and their lips start moving, nine times out of ten, they are lying.

Is this man my current boyfriend? He says that he is 'protecting me' from the truth (bareface lying in my language). Why do men do that?!?!?! If I wanted protecting, I'd buy a f******g tank!

You've nothing to lose when you tell him that you've been through his wallet - he has more to be in trouble about. You have found the receipt for a reason - normally they go in the bin or carrier bag - thank fate for intervening, bite the bullet and ask him why he can't be honest with the mother of his child. His depression etc. makes a touching excuse, but we've all had a lot of shit in our lives and it boils down to one thing - personal responsibility for our actions. Good luck and hope it works out.

Important Depression Info & Treatment Choices - How to Get Your Life Back

There is a lot of depression info out there. How do you sort through it all to find the treatment that is right for you? In this article, you will learn important facts about prescription drugs and natural remedies that will help you choose the best treatment. Once you get started on a treatment program, you will be able to take charge of your life.

The most advertised depression information is for prescription drugs, so you may think this is your only option, but this is simply not the case. Pharmaceutical companies have deep pockets and spend millions of dollars every year, teaching potential customers about their drugs. While these drugs are effective for some people, it's important to understand that they do not heal the cause of depression, instead, they just suppress the symptoms. This is good news for the pharmaceutical companies because if you can find a drug that works for you, you are pretty much a customer for life.

While I'm not trying to knock depression info published by the drug companies, it's important for you to be aware that they do have a vested interest in getting you on their drugs. After all, the recurring income they earn is one of the reasons they are the richest industry on earth.

Fortunately, these companies are regulated by the government. At the end of every television commercial, they are required to list the potential side effects of their medications. Have you ever listened to one of these commercials and laughed because there were so many side effects listed, it seemed ridiculous to consider taking the drug? Well, it's smart to pay attention to these side effects because in some people, they can worsen the symptoms of depression and even lead to suicide.

Currently, there are three types of drugs used for depression on the market: tricyclics, SSRIs, and MAOIs. Within each class of drug, there are a number of different drugs. Certain drugs work better for certain people and some people cannot tolerate the side effects of these drugs which can include sleep problems, stomach issues, lowered libido, weight gain, anxiety, heart issues and more. Also, some of these drugs can interact negatively with other drugs and supplemental hormones, so you need to ask your doctor about the interactions specific to that drug.

Further, what you won't learn from the depression information out there is that in the scheme of human history, these drugs are relatively new. As such, the drug companies do not know the long term effects these drugs have on the brain. Since we know that there are short term effects, long term implications should be of primary concern.

It's important for you to understand that it's not your fault that you are suffering from depression. Life is stressful and sometimes, chronic stress depletes the feel-good neurochemicals in the brain that balance stress and help us regain our footing after difficult life events. But think about it: if your brain chemicals are depleted, doesn't it make sense to build them back up again with nutrients that will help the brain to heal itself, rather than drugs that at best only suppress symptoms temporarily and can potentially make them worse?

For centuries, people have turned to proven herbs like St. John's Wort and Passion Flower to alleviate depression and restore energy and vitality. When these herbs are delivered in a standardized formulation that ensures the same dose every time, they provide a gentle, but effective way to give the brain the nutrients it needs to heal and start producing those feel-good brain chemicals on its own. This is a healthy solution to all the depression info out there that leads you to believe that your only option is prescription drugs.

Once you start taking a natural remedy and are feeling better, you will have the motivation to make small lifestyle changes that will continue to support a positive outlook and help you climb out of depression once and for all.

As the commercial says, "Depression hurts." It hurts everyone who loves and depends on you, but it doesn't have to be this way. It's not your fault that you're depressed, but now that you have the depression information needed to choose the best solution for yourself, you can take the first step in getting your life back.

OCD facts, symptoms, etc.?

I posted this question yesterday. I recently recovered from 5 years of serious depression and I'm still recovering. I won't fully recover for approx. 3 yrs. Ever since I was a kid, I had difficulty relaxing. I was always studying, never had much of a social life. I figured it was mild and I ignored it, I found it to be rather philanthropic toward my academic work. Though I've noticed it has beginning to worsen. I'm assuming it's post depression, or perhaps environmental. If you have OCD, I would appreciate YOUR symptoms and YOUR treatment and so on. Thanks.

Bipolar Depression Disorder Quotes:

Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal. By Albert Camus Find out about Bipolar Depression Disorder

13 Bipolar Affective Disorder Triggers - 4 Treatment Plans

Manic Depressive is now known as Bipolar Affective Disorder, a mood disorder of which there are millions of sufferers. It is natural for people to have mood swings, but in this disorder moods go beyond what is normal. Sufferers experience extremes of low depression and high moods of elation or mania, and the frequencey varies from person to person.

Experts seem to think that the causes of Bipolar Disorder is through genetics or hormone levels, but this hasn't yet been fully established. In some cases acquired illnesses in a person have contributed to them getting a Bipolar Disorder.

In our daily lives, we all experience different events that give us emotions, some of which can at times, trigger mood swings. Having to cope with happy, joyful moments and then unpleasant, sad times can threaten to cause depression or a manic episode.

These triggers are also know as Stressors, which can cause mood swings. The following are examples:

1 No regular sleep
2 Alcohol or drug abuse
3 Stopping medication
4 Starting medication or herbal products for depression
5 Medical conditions such as thyroid problems
6 Changes in the seasons
7 Illness
8 Holidays
9 Having disagreements with family or friends
10 Problems at work
11 Death of a loved one, family or friend
12 Marital strife
13 Start of a new job or course

Once you have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, you will begin to recognise what triggers it. Devising your own mood chart or keeping a diary will help as you record all the events that have happened and how you felt about them. Certain patterns will emerge after some time which will help you find the triggers, and for each person it can be different.

Having help at hand to make your mood chart can be difficult. Enlist the aid of a trusted friend or member of the family. If you prefer, talk to a therapist or other healthcare provider; you can get their views and understand what they see. This can help you pick up on things that you may not have noticed.

By working out what triggers your mood swings, you can plan how best to avoid these situations. It will require some effort to get rid of bad habits, so help make your family and friends aware of your struggles, especially those who are strong enough to help you muddle through, and those who understand you better.

Some people can go through years without being diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. Many do not seek professional help, as laboratory tests do not needed to be carried out, as for other illnesses. The MDQ is what a medical provider uses, which is a questionnaire specially utilised for Bipolar disorders. The person conducting the questionnaire has a checklist to fill on all the symptoms that a person may exhibit. Only a medical professional can use this to give the correct diagnosis, and nobody else.

Bipolar Affective Disorder can be treated with many different medicines available, which are:

1 Antidepressants - Used alone can trigger a mania episode if a person is having a depressive episode, or it can be used with a mood stabiliser.

2 Antipsychotic - For people going through mania episodes; depressive episodes or severe mania can end in psychosis, for which an antipsychotic can help with. Can be used alone or prescribed with other medications if a person has trouble sleeping or feels nervous.

3 ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy) - A treatment rather than a medication to help those who suffer from severe depression or from mania episodes. This therapy can also be given to those who do not respond to medications.

4 Mood Stabilisers - Medicine which can ease or delay depression and to relieve mania episodes.

ECT is only used as a therapy to help those who have acute depressive and manic symtoms. It is effective at reducing mood instability and cycling, and also helps to mimimise bipolar symptoms and side effects from given treatments. A bipolar patient can resume a normal life with a good management plan.

Bipolar Affective Disorder affects the individual as well as their families, but we all need to remember that with good proper treatment and medications, the disorder can be stabilised and controlled. Seek medical advice now.
