Depression Tests: A Great Help in Diagnosing Depression Disorders

Depression tests are given by health providers in order to assess the level of depression of the patient. Different Depression Tests vary not only in their set of questions but on their assessment procedures as well.

Depression tests are grouped as self-test questionnaires given by health providers. There are several self tests for determining a person's level of depression.

• Self-Tests

Zung Depression Scale - This is a 10 minute screening test with 20 questions. This is for people who experienced symptoms in the past 2 weeks. Scoring includes 50-69 common range for depression and 70+ for severe depression.

Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) - This test has a total of 20 questions. It was developed by Lenore S. Radloff for the assessment of depression symptoms for the past week. This also tracks the progress, on a weekly basis, in a short form. Depression is present when there are a 16+ point gained. This is also equivalent to 10+ points in short form of.

Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) - This is for adults. It is screening test with 30 questions and a short form of 15 questions. Scores indicates; 10-19 = for Mild Depression, 20-30 = for Severe Depression. For the Short Form, 4-10 = Mild Depression, 10-14 = Severe Depression.

Some of the detailed self-assessment depression tests are:

1. The National Mental Health Association Depression Screening
2. Mayo Clinic Depression Assessment
3. The Wakefiled Self-Report Questionnaire on Depression

• Free Depression Tests Online

Anxiety and Depression Screening Test - These are screening questions for assessing anxiety disorders as a mental illness.

Goldberg Depression Questionnaire - This is designed by Dr. Ivan Goldberg. It consists of 18 questions. It can be answered with the use of a scale that responds to their feelings. Wakefield Depression Questionnaire - This is composed of 12 questionnaires which can assess signs of depression at the moment you are answering it. A score of 15+ points needs a care of a mental health professional.

• Tests Given By Health Care/Mental Health Professionals

Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) - This is commonly used by health providers. This has about 21 multiple test questions that can assess a patient for the past two weeks who needs further treatment. The higher the score, the more severe the depression is.

The Depression-Arkansas Scale (D-ARK) - This brief instrument developed test is made by Dr. G. Richard Smith. It has 11 questions that can assess disorders for the past 4 weeks. It is categorized by: 0-8 minimal, 9-12 mild, 13-8 moderate and 9+ severe.

Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) - This depression screening test has about 10 questions which can assess the last 7 days, for further evaluation. 9+ points indicates a suicidal tendency and 1+ point for further care assessment via health providers.

Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) - This has a total of 21 questions that can assess severe symptoms. This is handed by health professionals for proper monitoring. Severe indicates a high score.

Cornell Dysthymia Rating Scale (CDRS) - This test assesses dysthymia symptoms. It has about 20 test questions.

Depression Tests are designed to determine the risk of developing a depressive disorder. The test is a series of questions which concerns the daily habits and mood swings. This can help identify symptoms for more evaluation and can only be done by professionals.

Depression tests are now on the tip of our hands offers instant free results. Aside from this, it can be done with confidential screening nowadays. The National Mental Association even started its web based tests so as to lower the risk of people not seeking help.

Although the disorder is highly treatable, The American psychiatric Association states that eighty to ninety percent can be treated effectively with the help of depression testing. Once the testing is done, the report and personalized interpretation will pass through medical professionals for proper treatment.

Depression Tests is an early warning signal of the disorder. The best way to help a person is to undergo different tests so as to manage the stage of depression before it becomes full-blown. The type of depression will depend on the treatment given to the patient.

Symptoms of depression include the following:

• loss of activity interest
• sad mood
• changes in body weight and appetite
• less sleep or oversleep
• loss of energy
• agitation
• inappropriate guilt
• concentration difficulty
• suicide attempts
• and a feeling of worthlessness

Other warning signals include low motivation, extended fatigue and chronic frustration.

Depression Tests are not intended as the official diagnosis or a medical treatment substitute. This only serves as the primary route for the recommendation of a patient, especially for future plans of diagnosis and treatments. Treatment would include:

• Antidepressant medications
• Psychotherapy
• Or both

Aside from this, a referral to a good psychologist or psychiatrist would ease these depression problems. Thus, in order to effectively carry out these tests, doctors do a background check on the patient, particularly for past depressive episodes. Observing different situations is also part of the diagnosis. This is where the doctors can identify if the patient is suffering from emotional or physical depression.

Manic Depression/Bipolar?

I am doing a research project for my Health 250 class (Wellness.) We are supposed to choose a disease or conditional that we find interesting or that has impacted our lives in a personal way. I am doing bipolar disorder/manic depression, as I am bipolar type 2 and struggle immensely on a day to day basis with the realities of the disorder, and my SEVERELY bipolar type 1 uncle committed suicide several years ago.

Anyway, I obviously know on a personal level what bipolar disorder type 2 is, but I don't know much about type 1, cyclothemia, and that stuff.

If you have ANY statistics and/or information to share, that'd be awesome. Personal experiences are also a huge help!

Thanks!

Anna
ANYONE? Please?

Well, no personal experience to go off of. No personal knowledge either. The best I can possibly do to help is internet research.

Bipolar Depression Types Quotes:

Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. By Eleanor Roosevelt Find out about Bipolar Depression Types

Depression – Types and symptoms

Clinical depression goes by many names -- depression, "the blues," biological depression, major depression. But it all refers to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months at a time (not just a passing blue mood), accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past.

psychiatrists estimate that one in four women and one in ten men can expect to develop depression during their lifetime; depression affects at least one in 50 children under 12 and one in 20 teenagers.

Symptoms

Generally, the symptoms of depression include:

• Feeling sad, hopeless and despairing

• A loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities

• Loss of appetite or weight

• Loss of sex drive

• Sleeping problems, such as an inability to get to sleep or early waking

Types of Depression

Psychotic Depression:

sufferers of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things - - sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images.

Melancholic Depression

Is a more severe depression than non-melancholic depression and is primarily caused by biological factors. It is an uncommon type of depression, affecting only around 1-2% of the population and roughly the same number of males and females. It can occur on its own (unipolar) or as part of Bipolar Disorder.

Major Depression

An individual with major depression feels a profound and constant sense of hopelessness and despair.

Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is when a person has mild and alternating mood swings of elation and depression occurring over a long time period. Because the mood swings are mild, and the elation is often enjoyable, frequently people with cyclothymic disorder do not seek medical help.

The periods of elation and depression can last for lengthy periods, such as a few months. Often, a person with cyclothymic disorder has a relative with bipolar disorder, or they may develop bipolar disorder themselves.

Psychotic depression –

A depressed mood which includes symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you (paranoia) and having delusions.

Non-melancholic – in this case the depression is not melancholic, or, put simply, not primarily biological. Instead, it has to do with psychological causes, and is very often linked to stressful events in a person’s life, alone, or in conjunction with the individual’s personality style.

Non-melancholic depression is the most common of the three types of depression. People with non-melancholic depression experience:

• a depressed mood for more than two weeks

• social impairment

treat depression and bipolar?

I have recently been diagnosed with type 2 bipolar, mainly sever depression with lack of sleep as the main side affect of my manias. Since I have just recently been diagnosed, they are still working on finding the right dose of medicines for me. I am currently on Abilify and Zoloft. What are nonmedicinal ways to make myself feel better while waiting for the medicines to take over and/or ways to enhance the affects of the medicines? Any advice on how to treat/beat/feel better with depression would also be helpful. Thanks.

First, you should cut down on your sugar intake. Excessive sugar can help cause depression, nervous anxiety and spurts of energy followed by extreme fatigue. Caffeine products (such as coffee, non-herbal tea, cola, and some medications), cigarettes and alcoholic beverages may also contribute to nervous anxiety, depression and highs and lows of energy.

L- tyrosine has been effective for many people in reducing or eliminating depression in very short order (often in less than one hour! Take 100 to 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach.

Eat foods with lots of omega-3 fatty acids. Research studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help symptoms of depression as well as bipolar disorder. For people who do not like fish, fish oil supplements are available in health food stores.

Eat chocolate! Natural dark chocolate with little or no sugar that is. The natural occurring substance in chocolate called PEA, for short, has been found to elevate endorphin levels and act as a natural antidepressant.

Oregano may ease that depressed, heavy-hearted feeling.

If you have a juicer, whip up half a glass of watercress and a half a glass of spinach. Throw in some carrots to make the juice sweeter. Then, bottoms up and spirits up!

Eat 2 ripe bananas a day to chase the blues away. Bananas contain the chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine, which are believed to help prevent depression.

While running a warm bath, prepare a cup of chamomile tea. Add the used tea bag to the bath, along with a new one. If you use loose chamomile, wrap the herb in cheesecloth before putting it in the bathtub to avoid a messy cleanup. Once the bath is ready, take your cup of tea into the bath with you and relax in the tub.

To lighten a heavy heart, drink saffron tea and/or thyme tea that has been sweetened with honey.

Sniffing citrus essential oils every hour you're awake may help you get out of a funk. You can buy lemon or orange oil at a health food store. Do NOT take the oils internally.

Cheer yourself up by wearing rose colors - pinks and scarlets. The orange family of colors are also picker-uppers.

Making love can help people overcome feelings of depression.

If you're mildly depressed, simply change your physiology and your emotions will follow suit. In other words, do the physical things you do when your happy - and you'll feel happy. Smile! Laugh! Jump up and down! Sing! Dance! Get dressed up!

Juices seem to be calming to the nerves. Throughout the day, sip apple, pineapple, prune, grape or cherry juice. Make sure the juice has no added sugar or preservatives, and drink it at room temperature, not chilled.

Chop a large onion into very small pieces and add a tablespoon of honey. Eat half the mixture with lunch and the other half with dinner. Onions contain prostaglandin, which is proven to have stress-relieving effect.

St John's Wort - for mild to moderate depression, this herb lives up to its hype. More than 40 scientific studies have verified the traditional use of this herb for depression. It works as well as prescription drugs and has significantly fewer side effects. In all the studies though it took up to 2 weeks to have any effect. In some people it can take up to a month. Typical dosage: 900 mg of capsules standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin per day in divided doses, with meals (including a dose at bedtime if you are suffering from insomnia)

Oats - This is the same plant that goes into your morning oatmeal. It is a wonderful tonic for the nervous system, having generalized nourishing and soothing qualities. The plant is traditionally used not only for depression, but also for anxiety, stress, fatigue, and debility.

When buying dried oats for tea, look for pale green to yellow seeds, rather than something that looks like straw. Typical dosage: 3 cups of tea per day (steep 1 Tbsp of dried seeds in 1 cup of how water for 10 - 15 minutes.

Lavender - This beautiful, fragrant herb has a gentle relaxing and nourishing effect on the nervous system, while lifting the spirits and easing depression. It promotes refreshing sleep as well. It's essential oil can be applied to the body, inhaled, or added to bath water.
Typical dosage: 1 cup 3 times per day (steep 1 tsp of flowers in 1 cup of hot water for 5 minutes)

Gingko - This amazing herb is beneficial for treatment of the cardiovascular and nervous system. It enhances blood supply to the brain and improves nerve cell function. It enhances memory and other intellectual functions. Gingko can be an excellent treatment for depression especially in the elderly. Typical dosage: 40 - 60 mg of standardized extract capsules 3 times a day.

Women and Depression - Causes, symptoms and Treatment

Depression and women are closely related to each other. Depression in women is undeniable. Depression as a disease affects almost 10 percent of women.

It hampers the social, personal and professional life of women. Women tend to suffer from depression twice as more as their men counterpart. These kind of depressions are a great risk to the mental health, especially among young women. It mainly happens in women as they are in general more emotional than their male counterpart. They pile up loads of emotions in their mind without venting them.

Symptoms

There are several symptoms which can predict whether a woman is under depression or not. When depressed she does not find any interest in activities she enjoyed before. She starts blaming herself for everything and can also have suicidal tendencies. She may feel unwanted.

Anyone prescribed/taken mood stabilizers during pregnancy?

I'm bipolar and 20 weeks pregnant. Right now I'm seriously in the low end of the spectrum. I'm really worried about post partem depression considering that I'm already prone to having manic/depression episodes. I've taken the meds before and I can't function even on the low doses. Anti-depressants don't work at all. I just wanted to hear other people who may have been bipolar during pregnancy.

And yes, I will be speaking to my doctor, but that doesn't do any good without hearing some other opinions on the matter. I've tried going non-medicated and I really don't believe that it's very healthy for me to go without.

Just give me an opinion and preferably not a condescending one.

I'm sorry, but I don't know of any bipolar meds that are totally safe during pregnancy. I'm an OB nurse and I'm bipolar. There is nothing out there, that I'm aware of that I would take during pregnancy. While I was pregnant with my last child (4 years ago) I took wellbutrin to manage the depression, but it only mildly helped. I too was very worried about post partum depression. I got back on my meds very shortly after delivery and everything turned out ok. Its very important that your doctor is aware that you are bipolar now, so the two of can be on the same page about your treatment before and after delivery. By the way, if you see a psychiatrist talk to him/her, sometimes they can use different "safe" combinations of nonconventional meds to get the desired effect. Usually you would have to see a psychiatrist for that though, an ob or a family doctor may not be able to do that. Good luck to you.

My Depression Jesus Quotes:

We are more disturbed by a calamity which threatens us than by one which has befallen us. By John Lancaster Spalding Find out about My Depression Jesus

Depression Made Me Its Slave

I was watching a television program when a commercial break began explaining all the signs of depression. Without even knowing what was happening to me I felt myself being pulled into the description of hopelessness and fear. It was like a huge life-zapping suction cup that grabbed my attention and pulled at the very fiber of my thinking chaining me to everything that was wrong with my life.

Moments later the voice that directed all of my emotions and bunched all my pain into one massive ache explained why I needed to deaden the pain with anti-anxiety medicine. I was in the throws of depression; it was if the writers of the advertisement knew exactly how I was feeling. Suddenly a Spirit light entered my thinking and pulled me out of the depths of pain and instructed me that Depression was my master and I had become its Slave.

The voice of depression gnawed at a young mother's conscience pulling every thought of negativity and demanding a repeat performance of everything that she did wrong as a mother. Her three and a half year old daughter was still not potty trained. Her son was surfing the net and was looking at a pornographic site. Just yesterday she found out she was pregnant and now the list she had composed over every failure she felt as a parent surfaced and wrestled her to the ground in tears. She couldn't be a mother again!

An elderly man had been alone for years and he was desperate to find someone to love him again. In his anxiety he played with thoughts of who would want him now. He was old and worn out and even his family didn't have time for him. How could he find someone who would want to share his life with him? Every waking thought pulled at his mind and brought him to his knees reminding him constantly of his loneliness. Depression had captured him and brought him to despair with thoughts of suicide.

A woman sits before her computer and tabulates a pile of bills that are waiting to be paid. She looks at her bank account and then once again at the bills and realizes that no matter what she paid, she wouldn't have enough. Her head bounds low and a darkness of depression spreads engulfing her thinking with thoughts of hopelessness. No matter how hard she works she will never find enough money to pay all the bills.

Satan captures the minds of those who refuse to acknowledge there is a God. There is no hope for people who don't have faith. There is no future for those who depend on themselves alone without God. When you are not aware that you are fighting a spiritual war inside your head then you are mastered by Satan and held captive to negative thinking and depression.

Matthew 13: 14&15, "So the prophecy of Isaiah applies to them: 'This people will listen and listen, but not understand; they will look and look, but not see, because their minds are dull, and they have stopped up their ears and have closed their eyes. Otherwise, their eyes would see, their ears would hear, their minds would understand, and they would turn to me, says God, and I would heal them.'"

Too many people today are unaware of the unseen spiritual realm of heavenly beings surrounding our present day world. Beings that are talking constantly in your subconscious telling you that you are a loser. Voices condemning your every thought and telling you that you will always be a failure. These Demon voices relish pushing people into the darkness so they can make them slaves to hopelessness and fear.

When you place your faith in God then you begin to see the truth about the voices that captivate your mind. The Bible has story upon story of people who have been influenced by demons. God sent his only son to save people from these demonic forces. Jesus died for our sins so we would have the Holy Spirit who fights for those who surrender their lives to Him. People who have the Holy Spirit know it is a voice of positive thinking. A voice that gives inspiration, guidance, and wonder working power.

When you understand what you are fighting then you are able to break free and win the battle over your mind. Your eyes begin to see and your ears begin to hear the voice of love.

Matthew 13: 16, "As for you, how fortunate you are! Your eyes see and your ears hear."

Jesus brings us to a new light of understanding. He lifts the veil covering up the game of life that teaches us the difference between right and wrong and shows us the evil we are fighting against. He tells us about how temptation can lead us to over spend. He sets us free to believe in miracles by promising that He will divinely intervene on our behalf to help us meet our financial needs. He gives better paying jobs and promotions.

He inspires parents on how to teach their children. He helps them not to keep a list of wrongs of what their children have done and to never give up on them. He lets them enjoy their families by living one moment at a time. He inspires a love that surrounds a family and gives them the strength to face each problem.

He gives hope to the elderly. He inspires older men and women to teach Bible classes. He gives them hobbies that they enjoy. He takes the hand of the aged and guides them down paths to help them mentor the young. No one is ever alone because God surrounds each single person's life with love and a friendship that will never end. He loves people and He wants them to win the battle over evil that conspires to separate them from the joy of following Jesus' plan for their lives.

Matthew 11: 28-30, "Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light."

People today allow depression to rule their lives. They go to doctors to deaden the pain. They curl up in a ball of protection trying to hide from the demands of everyday life. But with God's help everything changes.

Romans 12: 2, "Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let 'God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind'. Then you will be able to know the will of God-what is good and pleasing to him and is perfect."

Depression is a selfish act. To give into the darkness of hopelessness is to give up on God. To allow a demon to influence your life and make you give up is to lose your game of life and to give victory to evil. When depression makes you its slave you are defeated by simple problems, like a child potting in his pants, a bill that you forgot to pay or a son who didn't show up to take his elderly father out because his job called him away suddenly. Depression is a prison that allows a person to feel sorry for themselves.

2 Corinthians 10: 4&5, "The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments; we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every 'thought captive and make it obey Christ'.

Depression gives us permission to feel bad. It robs you of your joy and sentences you to a prison of helplessness and fear. God tells us to fight against it and make our minds think according to the knowledge of God. Whenever we are fearful we must sing praises. Whenever we are feeling alone or abandoned we must read our Bibles and apply the light to our lives. Whenever we face difficulties with children we must pray and believe that God will give us the strength to win the battle with unconditional love one moment at a time.

Philippians 4: 8, "In conclusion, my brothers, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you."

Do not be afraid of tomorrow; for God is already there. By Author Unknown Find out about Depression Dummies

Anxiety symptoms For Dummy

Have you ever felt like you're walking down a hallway and the walls start closing in on you? You can see the end or the light so you start running full speed trying to reach your destination. Unfortunately you can't run fast enough and your space is getting smaller and smaller. Well, this is how anxiety makes you feel. You worry you're not going to have enough and no matter how hard you try there is no chance.

This affects millions of individuals everyday. It's important to understand that this comes from a combination of the several feelings. Being worried all the time, feeling there is disaster around the corner, and overwhelming fear are all usually present. Please understand that this plagues individuals of all ages. You could be thinking about family, work, health, money, or several other daily struggles that cause stress. Any one of them can cause an attack.

Anxiety symptoms include intense headaches, sweating, irritability, muscle tension, nausea, and tiredness. People ridden with anxiety feel on edge a lot of the time.

Often times, people with panic disorder have troubled relationships with friends and family due to always feeling they have to be on guard against whatever bad may come to them. Other anxiety symptoms include tiredness, trembling, difficulty focusing on a task at hand, and difficulty falling and staying asleep. Many people with anxiety also feel shortness of breath and often gasp for air.

Another good example of an anxiety disorder is to imagine you are drowning and you are sinking to the bottom. You can see the top and move your arms, but you are not getting there fast enough. When you finally reach the surface, you gasp for air and draw the attention of many around you. This happens to many people with anxiety in the middle of the mall, in the classroom, or in a social setting.

The cause of an anxiety disorder is attributed to many factors one example is genetics. Genetics is the passing of traits from parents to offspring. Genetics plays a large role in many disorders; anxiety disorders are at the top of that list.

Then of course you can't forget about the other factors like the environment, abuse, death, and other basic changes in life. They can all produce change, which can be difficult to handle.

Anxiety symptoms can destroy a person's life if it is not handled properly. The anxiety symptoms vary in degree from children to adults. Maybe a simple solution would be to talk it out with a friend or family member, meditate, or to just simply take a walk.

It is possible that you or the individual you know with anxiety disorder ends up developing a different disorder. Whether it's depression, panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, they should all be recognized. You have to handle panic attacks symptoms once way or another. If talking with someone else doesn't work, or you don't want to deal with others, we recommend a good self-help book. Doctors around the world have written several good books about dealing with anxiety disorder.

However, we do recommend starting with baby steps. Anxiety symptoms can definitely be overwhelming, especially for children. If you can address the situation early, you will have more options to help control the situation. Understand that panic disorder is a reaction to stress, but if it's disabling a person it needs to be handled. We deserve the chance to enjoy life, especially away from all the anxiety symptoms out there.

I asked her why she's acting different lately but she doesn't answer and just stares stupidly at me.

Manic Depression Diary Quotes:

I am reminded of the advice of my neighbor. "Never worry about your heart till it stops beating." By E.B. White Find out about Manic Depression Diary

How to cope with manic depression

Coping with manic depression, otherwise known as bipolar disorder, may be a real challenge for the individual suffering with the disease. It is difficult for the person who suffers with it, and those around them. Knowing that your health has serious effects on your loved ones may even serve to exacerbate the conditions. Knowing what to expect from your illness and planning methods to cope symptoms goes a long way in the fight against stress and anxiety of this serious disease.

First step: Understand that this is a disease. Manic depression is not a lack of staff. This is not something you choose to have. You do not feel sorry on oneself. You are not more action. You have a real disease. Do not let what others think influence how you feel, and enjoy. Most of what those who have not dealt with mental disorders know the facts are full of misinformation. While you can not be able to educate everyone, focus on the treatment of those closest to you as they learn about bipolar disorder is, and how to help you cope with the disease.

Step Two: Learning to keep stress to a minimum. Stress is a major factor in triggering manic-depressive crises. You may feel like your body has betrayed you after being diagnosed with manic depression. Do not allow feelings betrayal of your skin. It is normal to feel overwhelmed by the fact that your world has been upset. It's natural for anyone. Recognize the need for the anger and pain and give them their place, but do not address them. Instead, focus on all the positive things you can do to make your life fuller and happier. Know what the problem might be half the battle.

Step Three: Track specific medications. Your prescription drugs will help you control the way that manic depression has on your life. To be able live your life to the fullest, you must have the ups and downs in complete control. Your medications are your lifeline. Make a chart with what drugs take in it, and follow it religiously.

Step Four: Keep a plan of action. Just like your medical chart, an action plan for daily needs is a great way to be sure not to lose sight of the things you do. Make powers to make lists and follow them. Set each item on the list as a quick goal. If there are large items that must be performed to break into small individual goals to achieve. What you keep from feeling too overwhelmed by the important tasks. Fill each element will give you a sense of accomplishment, and finish your day, you feel beautiful and independent.

Step Five: keep a diary. Talking about your problems to friends and family is an excellent way to mitigate feelings of lonliness and stress of a mental disorder. Another important way to cope with your illness is to keep a diary. Sign everyday. The good and bad. That way, when you feel really upset, or emotional, you can look back and see what made you feel that way before and what you did with it, or what makes you happy in the good days and how you can get out of areas of poor this time.

Diaries can also help show you if you make improvements and bad days are less good. It can also alert you to problems if the bad days begin to catch up in good numbers. Most of all, keep a journal allows you to simply talk with you.

You live a wonderful life, happy and productive while dealing with bipolar disorder. Your friends and family will be with you on your journey and you can be independent and to enjoy the world again with just a little planning.

Depression Nos Treatment Quotes:

We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies. By Roderick Thorp Rainbow drive Find out about Depression Nos Treatment

DEPRESSION MEDICAL TREATMENT

Today there are many different treatment options available for depression. However, you should always remember that overcoming depression will take time and you will need to stay strong through some of the more difficult days.

Different types of depression  are caused by biological factors (melancholic depression and psychotic melancholia) and are more likely to need physical treatments, (e.g. antidepressants) and less likely to be resolved with psychological treatments alone (e.g. counseling, psychotherapy). Whereas, non-melancholic depression can be treated equally and effectively with physical treatments or with psychological treatments. Psychological

Treatment:

Psychological treatment is an alternative to medication or it sometimes works alongside medication and is usually provided by a mental health professional, such as a counselor, psychiatrist or psychologist.

Generally, psychological treatments or therapies used for depression include Cognitive Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Psychotherapy and Counseling.

Physical treatment:

1) Medication – Medication, to some extent, is successful in managing depression. There are several different types of antidepressant medicines available in the market which is prescribed by doctors or psychiatrists. Each antidepressant medicine works in a different way and has different applications.  Like most other medicine, these medicines too can have side-effects and some medications are better suited to adults than young people.

2) Hospitalization – If your depression is severe or if you have suicidal tendencies, then hospitalization may be necessary for you. You might have to spend a short amount of time in the hospital if you begin taking medication to make sure that it is working effectively or to gauge side effects.

Alternative Therapies

Along with seeking treatment to manage depression there are a number of things you can do yourself that may help you when you are feeling depressed. Some of these include:

1) Eating well and being active even when you might not feel like it. Exercising and eating well can help when you are feeling down as both stimulate hormones, such as endorphins, which help you feel better about yourself and your life.

2)  Whenever you are experiencing any changes in your emotions you should consider writing them down in a journal or a daily diary. This is not only a great way of understanding your emotions and a specific situation but it also helps you think about alternative solutions to your problems.

3) Always take time out to relax. When you are feeling down it may be hard to be social or motivate yourself to do things, but taking a little time out for yourself each day will help you to make a list of all the things you enjoy doing and then you can plan to do something from this list each day.

4) When you are depressed, it may seem hard, but sharing how you feel and hanging out with someone you trust can help you get through the hard times.

5) Sometimes in a race to be ambitious  you may set goals which are almost unachievable for you and then end up feeling even worse when you do not attain them. Always try to set goals that are achievable for you, even if it's on a day by day, or hour by hour, basis. And after achieving each goal, don’t forget to reward yourself.

How do I look up my Mental health records?

Im 18 but when I was 14 I went to a residental treatment center, The paper work says I was diagnosed with Depression(Dont know which kind) and a eating disorder (nos i think). I was put on prozac. (im off it now) Where is that information now? Like what if i want to be back on medication or find a theropist and say i need help for depression if i dont have nothing to prove I really have it? Or is it still in the system? Are my doctor and theropist in the system to? What will be on my mental health records? Should my mom still have the records? Help
Oh and i was under franklin county children services ( fccs) so im not sure if my mom has any info.

franklin county in what state. If you remember the name of the therapist you were seeing you can request a release of all records that pertained to you. You can also ask for the records from the RTC you were in as well. If there was any agencies involved such as children services, or CASA, (guardian adlitem) and so on you can also ask them for their records. I say this because if you do not know the name of the mental health provider you seen it will be in the records of other agencies. i wish you luck and I also wish you well. God Bless!!

P.S.. If you decide you want to go back on medication, all you have to do is tell your current mental health provider about your history. It could be to your advantage to ask your new mental health provider to re evaluate you in the best interest of making sure you have had the correct diagnosis. Also, your new provider will request records from previous providers. I hope this helps hon.

Manic Depression Disability Quotes:

A hundredload of worry will not pay an ounce of debt. By George Herbert Find out about Manic Depression Disability

Make The Best Use Of The Services Of Disability Lawyer

Even under the most perfect terms and conditions, to get your claim settled in a scheme like Social Security Disability is not that easy. Only when you begin to fill up the prescribed form and read the listing of the documents required- that too, when you are disabled, you feel the necessity to engage the services of a disability lawyer.

If your claim is once rejected, you don't wish to take a chance at the time of the appeal. In filling up any form, the technical points are more important and all such technicalities can be solved with the assistance of the lawyer.

The obvious benefits of engaging a lawyer to look after your claim are:

Better chances of winning the benefits- the lawyer will not miss any likely benefit.

The lawyer is an experienced man in the line. He is a skilled personnel and has dealt with such cases in the past.

He has trained staff for all the departments.

He makes smooth and quick movement of the file possible. Your precious time and expenses on conveyance is saved. Some lawyers don't charge anything, unless you receive your benefits. To that extent, you can consider their services free.

If you have any doubts, he has professional answers.

Take a note, Social Security and Social Security disability should not be confused. The former is a retirement plan while the later is a plan to assist the seriously disabled. Some of the disability plans drawn by the Government of USA are indeed unique and show a high sense of social responsibility. They are discussed below.

Cincinnati Social Security Disability

Physical and mental disability is the last thing one wants to live with. Along with physical pain, you suffer emotionally in every moment of your life. You compare persons with normal health with that of yours and suffer all the more. You can support yourself and can do anything for the welfare and happiness of your loved ones. Under this Scheme, the Federal Government has made two separate provisions to support such children/ individuals.

Pittsburgh Social Security Disability

USA is the land of plenty and prosperity, and this opulence of the materialistic civilization has also showered them with sufferings of many types. Those suffering from disabilities and impairments resulting from chronic diseases, accidents and congenital defects are in plenty. The Americans with Disabilities Act passed in the year 1990, provides regular income to such persons by the Federal Government.

Do not be under the false notion that you are entitled to get social security disability benefits, only in case of accidents and other very serious ailments. If you have recurring attacks of any one of the following, contact your disability lawyer and he will be able to find a way out to secure you the benefits under the existing legal provisions. We are listing below, some of them only:

Aids, arthritis, autism, bipolar disorder or manic depression, cancer, cardiomyopathy, cerebral palsy, clinical obesity, congestive heart failure, cystic fibrosis, depression, dizziness, epilepsy, fatigue, head trauma, hepatitis, learning disability, memory loss and mental retardation.

Does manic depression/Bi-polar disorder qualify as a disability covered under medicaid in the state of Fl?

Yes, but you need to be able to show that you are NOT well controlled with medication; because many believe that once you take a mood stabilizer, you are all better.

Here are things they will look at:
Have you been hospitalized
Are you in therapy
How many medications and how long
How many jobs and reasons for losing them
How many "episodes" do you have,
etc..

You will denied the first time. Almost everyone is. Then get a lawyer, reapply if you fit the "criteria" and you should be approved.

Clinical Depression Disability Quotes:

We are more disturbed by a calamity which threatens us than by one which has befallen us. By John Lancaster Spalding Find out about Clinical Depression Disability

Educating Society About Depression and Mental Illness - Must Know Facts

Depression can be a fatal illness in the elderly.

Depression is a chronic disease with a very high likelihood of recurrence. Long term treatment may be necessary for your older parent. Efficacious treatments are available.

Major depression strikes about 1 in 12 adolescents. In any given 6-month period, about 5 percent of 9- to 17-year-olds are estimated to be suffering from major depression.

Six million elderly suffer from some form of depression. Their depression tends to be dismissed as inevitable, but in fact is a serious medical condition that can magnify disability and lead to premature death.

Clinical depression can often accompany long-term illnesses that are common in later life, such as diabetes, cancer, and arthritis. Some medications can also trigger clinical depression. Depression is also a common consequence of alcohol problems among older adults.

The number of deaths from suicide each year is greater than the number of deaths from Homicide. Depression is not sadness. In depression, we lose the ability to feel any emotion strongly. The true opposite of depression is vitality the ability to feel a full range of emotions, including happiness, joy, pride, but also including sadness and grief.

Major depression is extreme and persistent and can interfere significantly with an individual’s ability to function, in contrast to the normal emotional experiences of sadness, grief, loss, or passing mood states.

Almost 20 percent of Americans have some form of depression, most without knowing it. They just assume that they can’t win, that their relationships are always trouble and that hopelessness, insomnia, chronic fatigue, and guilt are their lot in life.

In the elderly population, men are nearly six times more likely than women to commit suicide.

Men often deal with depression by withdrawing from others and throwing themselves into their work, engaging in risky or dangerous behavior, and/or becoming angry, frustrated and abusive.

Less severe forms of depression are also common among the elderly and can be as debilitating as Major Depressive Disorder.

Mild levels of depression can also impair functioning and coping with chronic illnesses and pain. Depression, however, is not a normal part of aging.

Research findings indicate that women with bipolar disorder may have more depressive episodes and more mixed episodes than do men with the illness.

As many as 80 percent of women experience the "postpartum blues," a brief period of mood symptoms that is considered normal following childbirth.

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, up to one-third of the 3.4 million children and adolescents with depression in the United States may actually be experiencing the early onset of bipolar disorder.

Mental illnesses strike individuals in the prime of their lives, often during adolescence and young adulthood. All ages are susceptible, but the young and the old are especially vulnerable.

Depression can lead to poor school attendance and performance, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Some teens try to make the pain of depression go away by drinking or taking drugs, which only makes the depression worse. Still others contemplate suicide.

All too often, depression is left untreated because people fail to recognize the symptoms and believe that it is just normal sadness, a phase that a teen is going through, or a sign of weakness. This can be a terrible mistake. It is important to know the symptoms, so that you can distinguish depression from occasional normal sadness or moodiness.

Will I ever feel like life is for living?

I have Bipolar Disorder and have treatment resistant depression. Most recently I had Electroconvulsive therapy (25 treatments) whilst inpatient at Psych hospital over 9 week stay. I discontinued treatment as memory loss and confusion was terrible. I have thought alot about suicide. I have attempted a few times in past. Some would say i was lucky to have survived! I gave up my dream career and have been put on disability pension and classified as permanently incapacitated. My mother whom i love dearly has terminal cancer and my best friend (dog) of 11 years has spinal injury & may also not have much time left. The house Im in is for sale and I dont know where to next. I cant see me getting through all this. My psychiatrist as suggested i try Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) which is still in its clinical trial stage. It requires another 2-4 weeks in hospital. Ive had enough. I was wondering if any one has tried TMS? Any opinions welcome?? Thanks

well first of all i can really tell your not-as bad as you used to be, by just you saying "i was lucky to survive". so take happiness in that and be proud of yourself of how far you've come to be able to say that. A dream is never lost forever, first thing tomorrow, get up get dressed, look in to the mirror and tell yourself this is the day your life turns around, then go to the job centre, dont look on the internet, actually go out there and find things ask things, hand in your CV, just the good things for now. even if you have to work your way back up again, you can do it, it wont be any where near as bad or hard as what youve been though, so you know you can do it!! :D and so do i!! I used to be very close to my mum and both me and her have had cancer, just squeeze out the very best of the good times, and if you force yourself to be optomisitc and possitive as much as you can, make an effort everytime you leave the house, just randomly go out for short walks etc, and youl feel so much better, and gradually you will notcie that you dont have to force yourself to be possitive it will just start turning around for you. i know this all seems very sudden and scary but delaying it even another day, will take you back to how you were. you obviously want all thee changes to be asking this question. i dont know much about bipolar but good luck with that and i hope your getting the treatment now that best suits you. x my best friend is my cat and i couldnt imagine living wihtout her and shes 13, but sometimes an injury can bring you closer together, allmost apreciating the time that was allmost so suddenly taken aaway from you, so when your dog does die, you can say you got the absolute most out of him/her. Allso if your moving, maybe look for a job somewhere completely new, vibrant and different for your job! have a day out shopping whilst your applying or something, make a weekend of it with a friend and stay in a hotel, or with your mum, some quality time, have fun! sounds like you both need a bit of relaxing x. the best treatment is what you can do for yourself then you wont feel like you have to rely on anyone, get help form your phsyciatrist and the doctor, but know you can do yourself better good if you try aswell :) xxx good luck take care. i was a self harmer and tried to kill myself, im only 17 and ive just lost a baby, but ive come through all that, and i think you can too xxx

Caffeine, Health and Recovery

Anyone in recovery desires several things. You want to remain free of the drug you had been using and you want to alleviate the negative physical and emotional conditions that were created by that addiction. Hopefully, you also want to lead a healthier life in general. In order to move along a new path in life in which you are becoming and staying healthier, you must not only stay free of your previous substance abuse, but you should live in a more wholesome manner, one that is not just, not unhealthy, but one that actively promotes good health. One important way to do this is to detoxify your body and keep it free of all harmful, toxic substances. To do this, you ought to eliminate certain habits to avoid these other substances, in addition to remaining free of the drug you were abusing. For this reason, knowledge of the effects of various foods and chemicals is essential to being able to find and stay on the path that leads you to better and better health.

Sometimes sociological conditions and peer influences can distort ones view of the real situation. A good example of this was cigarette smoking. Older movies are a good indication of the social norms at the time. Not only did most people start smoking in social situations, but the person who did not smoke was considered not really as much a part of the social group. Of course, now most people are fully aware that not only is nicotine very addicting, but the intake of the toxic smoke is extremely harmful and unwise, and it is morally wrong to make those around you inhale toxic second hand smoke. Today, things are different and it is the person who wants to smoke, who is a bit of an outsider, and who often finds themselves literally outside, when they have to smoke in another location, like outside a restaurant or even outside an apartment where they are a visitor.

Today, caffeine is an accepted drug, just like nicotine was many years ago. In fact, caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world. Some may feel that it is probably not as harmful as the toxic smoke that went along with nicotine addiction and cigarette smoking. Nevertheless, there is no doubt, that caffeine is very harmful to the health of a person. In the Western world, 8 out of 10 adults consume caffeine in some form. Presently many Americans are hooked on caffeine. Ninety percent consume it in one form or another every single day. Over half of them consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine every day. It is in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, and a variety of other things, and is our nation's most popular drug.

Caffeine occurs naturally in many plants, including coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa nuts. Caffeine is really a biological poison used by plants as a defense against being harmed and injured by the other forms of life in their environment. The caffeine gives seeds and leaves a bitter taste, which discourages their consumption by insects and animals. If predators continue to eat a caffeine-containing plant, the caffeine can cause central nervous system disruptions and even lethal side effects. Most of them learn to leave the plant alone.
Though it is widely known that caffeine is an addictive and unhealthy drug, it is widely consumed and as much a part of American contemporary life as smoking was years ago. With the spread of and popularity of coffee bars, coffee, one of the main sources of caffeine in people's diet, is more popular than ever. (Tea and hot chocolate, also consumed at these coffee bars contain significant caffeine, but not as much.) Around one third of all coffee drinkers say they can't do without it and are clearly addicted. Tolerance for caffeine for anyone drinking coffee can develop rapidly and lead to the desire to increase ones consumption. Someone used to drinking six or seven cups of strong coffee a day will begin to experience withdrawal symptoms on waking and then every two to three hours after the last coffee drink. If you are seeking optimum health, however, you should severely curtail your coffee consumption, and eventually stop consuming it at all. It is a drug and the last thing any of us needs is another addiction.

When most people think of caffeine they immediately think of coffee, and yet much of the caffeine that is ingested does not come from coffee at all. In fact, people who do not drink coffee may be ingesting quite a great deal of caffeine regularly. The fact is, caffeine is an addictive additive in most commercial sodas.
Caffeine has many effects on the body and brain. For example, as your body becomes fatigued, adenosine is made in the brain, and binds to adenosine receptors. This causes drowsiness by slowing nerve cell activity. The result is that you will want to stop and rest. You will want to go to sleep. This is healthy, for you need the rest. The adenosine also causes blood vessels to dilate in the brain, so more oxygen can reach the brain during sleep.

When caffeine is ingested and goes into the stomach, it quickly travels to the brain. Once there it binds to the adenosine nerve receptors. But instead of cellular activity slowing, this results in it speeding up. The cell can no longer bind with adenosine, because the caffeine is linked up with all of its available receptors. The usual effect of adenosine is blocked in this way and the cell begins accelerating its activity. In addition to this, because adenosine is shut out, the brain's blood vessels begin to constrict. The increased neuron firing in the brain stimulates the pituitary gland. The pituitary signals the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline (epinephrine), the "fight or flight" hormone.Unfortunately, when the adrenaline wears off, you feel fatigued and that drives you to get more caffeine. As you go through this cycle many times through the day, you will find yourself becoming more and more irritable.

Caffeine raises the blood pressure and increases the levels of various stress hormones, and for those very sensitive to it or consuming large quantities, it can cause heart palpitations and nervousness. If sustained by regular coffee drinking over a lifetime, these increases in blood pressure and heart rate will elevate the risk of stroke and heart disease. Heavy coffee drinkers, those having five or more cups per day, were two to three times more likely to have coronary heart disease than were nondrinkers.

Caffeine at a high level can eventually lead to exhaustion of the adrenal glands. Caffeine is a chemical stimulant that increases blood levels of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. The adrenal hormones regulate stress response, blood pressure, blood sugar, mineral levels, immune activity, inflammation, and cell growth and repair. Long term caffeine consumption contributes to adrenal insufficiency, in which over 150 hormones produced by the adrenals or metabolized from adrenal hormones no longer function adequately.
Caffeine causes the body to produce greater amounts of cortisol, the body's stress hormone. These elevated levels can last for hours having a negative effect on serotonin and dopamine production. Anxiety will increase and even depression can result from these changes.

People sometimes feel sharper after their cup of coffee, however the increased cortisol will lead to restricted blood to the brain and eventually causes poorer mental performance.

People who chronically stimulate their adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol alter their daily pattern of cortisol concentrations so that cortisol is low in the morning when they wake up instead of high. So they reach for a cup of coffee to artificially spike their cortisol levels up again. These same people experience huge cortisol surges at meals causing them to overeat. They have higher body fat, lower muscle mass, and reduced metabolism, so they burn fewer calories. They don't sleep well at night because elevated cortisol levels keep them from entering the deep, rebuild and repair stage of sleep the body needs for recuperation. High levels of cortisol will also compromise your immune system and interfere with your body's ability to fight off pathogens.

Be aware that if you frequently drink coffee or have other sources of caffeine, including ,especially, the many popular caffeinated sodas ,and find that at end of the day you are regularly stressed out and exhausted, even depressed and worried, it could very well be the result of the caffeine generating large amounts of cortisol in your body.

In the end, those seeking the healthiest life should avoid the caffeine to be found in many popular beverages. You should avoid caffeinated coffee, and even Decaf, which is not totally caffeine free, and get in the habit of reading the ingredients on the labels of all sodas and drinks, and choose only the ones which are free of caffeine. Fortunately, for those in successful recovery from alcohol, which had caused hangovers and interfered with the important REM sleep, the powerful need for caffeine in the form of coffee in the morning no longer exists.
