If you see ten troubles coming down the road you can be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you. By Calvin Coolidge Find out about Cognitive Behavior Therapy Anxiety

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treatment has traditionally been used in the treatment of numerous conditions such as anxiety disorders, delusional disorders, depression, phobias, and other mental disorders.  Recently Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment programs have found that this is also effective in the treatment of and recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction.  It is much more innovative and offers the client a greater chance of succeeding, although it is not 100% guaranteed for each and every client.

We provide our clients with an environment that is conducive to the specific needs of the client – physically, mentally, and spiritually.  There is never a lack of respect for any client’s beliefs or faith or that these clients have a strong need to walk their spiritual path in order to enhance their recovery and treatment.  In this way, most clients succeed in the Cognitive Behavioral TherapyTreatment program and go on to lead productive lives while remaining clean and sober for years to come.

Additionally, these Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment programs also provide the client with an ideal path or “track” essential to the success of both the treatment and the recovery.  Client types such as the following are positively affected by this program:

  • Clients who do not favor a Christian-based or 12-Step program
  • Clients that personal empowerment along with overcoming the addiction comes from one’s inner being without seeking strength outside of themselves
  • Clients who are seeking enhancement to the current treatment and recovery program base with key benefits such as their belief systems, cognitive processes, and “triggers” while having their own spirituality or beliefs in spiritual issues.

cognitive behaviour therapy not working for my social phobia panic attacks anxiety lonelyness and depression?

im now trying xanax and it helps alot with the panic but i still have the crushing lonely feeling and depression...anyways ill talk to my counseller about this today and ask a new question tonight on how it goes. good luck with your problems guys :)

I am physician who also has generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD). I hope I can provide some useful info.
several points. 1. xanax is a good med to treat GAD and social phobia but can be addictive. Short term use is ok but I would not recommend it for long term use (> 3 months) due to addictive potential. A better choice for more long term use would be an SSRI such as Lexapro, Celexa or other similar antidepressant/antianxiety meds. Such meds do not have any addictive potential. These meds can also help w/ the depression which xanax may not fully address. Oftentimes, I will start a patient on Lexapro (for example) and also use xanax (or simiar anxiolytic) for a short term to act as a "bridge" for treating someone's anxiety. Lexapro takes awhile (2-4 weeks) to really start working, where as xanax works within a few mins of taking. When a patient is improving, I then will tapper them off the xanax while continuing the other med.
2. Cognitive Behaviour therapy can be helpful so do not give up on it. Unfortunately, it does take a lot of time (months or even years) to get the full potential. I recommend reading Dr. Burns' "Feeling Good" where he helps explain the background for CBT (cognitive Behav Therapy). He also has a book on anxiety (which I have not read) that may be helpful in applying CBT to GAD. Also, I would assume that you are getting the CBT thru INDIVIDUAL psychotherpay. For 16 yrs, drugs and individual psychotherapy did not help me. It was not until I had GROUP psychotherapy that CBT (and other techniques) were helpful to me. The "group" dynamic made all the difference. In individual psychotherapy, the therapist would tell me I'm not alone and listen to me talk and use CBT techniques to redirect my thinking. However, it was not until being a part of a group that I really did not feel "alone", that others were suffering w/ some of the similar problems that I have. In group psychotherapy, the group helps you solve the problems and the therapist only serves as a guide. Thru the group, you help each other in sharing each other's stories and cooping strategies, identifying maladapative coping technqiues and alternative choices. The problem is there are not very many therapy groups around, except in inpatient (hospitlized) setting or in drug/alchohol treatment programs. I attended my group set up specifically for prefessionals in crisis. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of similar such programs for the general public. An option for group therapy maybe Coda (co-dependence anonomyous, see www.coda.org) meetings. The problem is there is no therapist leading the group, only other group members that follow coda principles (modified AA, 12-step program). Adjusting your meds, continuing w/ individual psychotherpay, and attending coda meetings may be helpful for you. Bridge the informartion obtained in individual and group meetings to help yourself, with your therapist serving as your guide. Talk to your therapist about the Coda idea to see what he/she thanks. 3. Furthermore, make sure you identify your "core issue(s)", the underlying, typically childhood derived issues that have lead to your social phobia, etc. Ask yourself "What am I lonely about?", "What has been missing in my life?, or "What is it that I'm really anxious about?" Thinking about your childhood can really help you identify the wounded child within (sometimes referred to as the "True self") and where these feelings may have originated. Books to help you identify core issue(s) include "Healing the Child Within" (Charles Whitfield), "Bradshaw on: Healing the Shame that Binds You" (John Bradshaw), and "Changing course" (Claudia Black). 4. Finally, there is another book that I also recommend: "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. He gives 4 codes to live life by that are so basic, yet so powerful.

I hope this helps and I hope that you find true pleasure in life!

Scott M.

Anxious Behavior Quotes:

Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is. By German Proverb Find out about Anxious Behavior

Could You be Anxious Because You are a Pleaser?

Take a Quiz and Find out What Kind You Are

The truth is, your pleasing behaviors are affecting your self-esteem and self-confidence.The truth is this: nothing and no one can give you self-esteem and acceptance-only yourself. Real self-confidence and self-esteem always comes from within. It's a gift you give yourself.

Answering the following questions may give in insights into your behaviors. Answer with the first thing that jumps into your mind. If you change it you are second guessing yourself and second guessing is being dishonest with yourself.

Take the quiz and use this number key for your answers.

 •1. "That's me."

•2. "That's me sometimes and sometimes not."

•3. "No not me, but there are some similarities."

 •4. "That's not really me."

 •5. "No not me."

______1. I feel insecure and not very confident much of the time.

______2. I feel I have to "walk on eggs" to keep everyone from getting angry.

______3. My father was distant or unloving most of the time.

______4. When I'm at the grocery store and shorted a penny or two on change, I don't ask for it.

______5. I feel overpowered by my husband, boyfriend, or fiancé'.

______6. I feel I really can't do most things right.

 ______7. I'm always saying, "I should have, I ought to ......"

______8. My husband and children know how to make me feel guilty.

______9. I feel like hiding, running away, not dealing with things.

 ______10. I don't like confrontations. They're just too unpleasant.

______11. I often fake it and tell others I like what they're doing or saying when I really don't.

______12. If I try on six or seven pairs of shoes at the store, I feel I'm obligated to buy at least one pair.

______13. I often feel as if lm not really running my own life.

______14. I don't get many "strokes" from those I love.

______15. I am easily talked into choices that please other people more than they please me.

______16. When I take the initiative or stand up for my rights, I feel apprehensive or embarrassed.

______17. If I am ignored, insulted or given poor service in a store or restaurant, I let it go because it isn't worth the hassle to complain.

______18. I feel I have few choices or options to improve my life.

______19. I don't get much respect from my mate.

______20. Taking on new tasks makes me feel afraid and apprehensive.

 SCORING:

25 or below -You are a SUPER sufferING PLEASER. You are definitely in the hands of a controller or possibly a misogynist who is constantly criticizing and abusing you verbally and, on occasions, physically. You need help, probably from an outside source such as a counselor.

25-50 You are a DEPRESSED PLEASER. You have a knack for finding the losers or the losing situations in life. You are probably tied to a "mega loser" who keeps you involved with him because "he needs you." Or perhaps you are being victimized by a husband who is a womanizer wanderer or deadbeat who can't keep a job. You are hanging on by your fingernails but starting to slip.

50-75 You are a PLAYED - OUT PLEASER. You are making a go of life, but often feel exhausted and under pressure - as if someone‘s always wanting a piece of you. You don't get respect, you wish you could stand up for your rights but you really don't know how.

75-90 You are a MILDLY DISCOURAGED PLEASER. Life isn't all that bad. You have good times to offset the bad, but you know things could be much, much better.

9O and above You are a POSITIVE PLEASER. You like to please but have enough assertiveness and self-esteem to find fulfillment, satisfaction, and enjoyment. Your family gives you the love and support you need, and your pleasing efforts are an even exchange for that love and support.

Now go back and reread the questions and circle the ones you feel you can begin to change. Ask yourself, "How can I change this behavior in myself?" Remember the first step is learning the truth about of your behaviors. Awareness is like a golden key that opens the door to change. In making a commitment between yourself and your Higher Power to do the best you can in changing that one behavior, you have chosen an important step towards your freedom and peace of mind. It's never too late to gain a healthy self-esteem and self-confidence.

My hubby has an anxiety behavior that drives my crazy! Anytime he feels upset anxious he vacumes.?

A clean home is great, but its like all the time, and I think its an anxiety issue. What can I do to help? BTW I hate the vacuming noise esp during the day.

LOL my husband has the issue too. Not just vacuuming but any kind of cleaning. He dusts, and reorganizes things. I'm pretty sure that that is an obsessive compulsive disorder but my husband hates taking any meds so we just live with it. If your husband sees it as a problem he might be willing to go to a therapist but he may not be as bothered by it as you are. Sorry I do know what it's like. My DH has made us late to appointments, meetings even church because he has to vacuum LOL

Rapid Cycling Manic Depression Quotes:

As a rule what is out of sight disturbs men's minds more seriously than what they see. By Julius Caesar Find out about Rapid Cycling Manic Depression

Use Depression Medication With A Lot Of Caution

Depression is normally a health problem that no one would want to come across in there lifetime. However, this condition is among the challenges that people cannot easily run away from. For this reason, depression medication had to be found so that patients could easily be helped come out of this situation once they find themselves in it. These medications are often vital for the proper recovery of the patient in the hard process of recovering. At times, the medicines may need to be combined in order to achieve needed results something that is usually not new to depressed patients.

Mood stabilizer is among the most commonly used depression medication today. It is mostly used for bipolar depression where it is used to control and stabilize your moods so that you do not find yourself swinging from high levels (manic) to low levels (depression). A good example of a mood stabilizer is Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). This stabilizer is usually administered in the first line of treatment where manic episodes have taken place. Unfortunately, in most cases, mood stabilizers often need to be taken throughout the patient's life so as to avoid a recurrence of the bipolar depression. One major side effect of this medication is that, once taken, it may result in harming a developing fetus or a nursing infant.

Anti-seizure medication also known as an anticonvulsant, is another depression medication that can be used to stop mood swings from occurring. However, unlike the mood stabilizer, the anticonvulsant is usually meant to be used by patients with a certain kind of bipolar depression known as the rapid cycling bipolar disorder and not any other type of depression. Among the commonly used anticonvulsants today are such as divalproex (Depakote), lamotrigine (Lamictal) and valproic acid (Depakene). All these medicines can always be obtained from any pharmacy that is near you but they need to be taken according to the doctors instruction to avoid any misfortunes that may easily come with them.

Whenever anti-seizure medication does not respond well with the patient, anti psychotic medication such as risperidone (Risperdal) and olanzapine (zyprexa) can easily be used as its substitute. Just like the anti-seizure medication, this depression medication works by regulating the mood swings of the patient hence preventing them from reaching both extreme ends. Although anti psychotic medication may be seen to cure depression problems, it may at times increase the risks of getting diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity and therefore, not many doctors recommend this type of medication. Hence, before you decide to use anti psychotic medication consult your doctor first and let him conduct a proper diagnosis on you so as to know for sure whether you are fit to use this medication or not.

For anxiety depression, anti-anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines are usually recommended by many doctors since they help a lot in reducing the intensity of the anxious episodes being experienced by the patient. In addition to this, these medicines assist the patient to sleep well. Another anti-anxiety medication known as quetiapine (Seroquel) has also been recently approved by food and drug administrations all over the world. This medicine is greatly considered to be one of the best depression medication since it is able to treat both the manic and depressive episodes without having to leave much side effects behind with the patient.

Having known that depression medication may come with side effects, it is usually advisable to talk to your doctor about undertaking constant monitoring for any health problems that may be as a result of this.

In this scenario, could the psychiatrist be wrong about bipolar?

Diagnosis: Bipolar 1 "Mixed", Rapid Cycling.

Moods last for week, days, or hours.

Manic: Tends to not be a happy manic, (very rarely), tendency to have irritable & angry manic episodes with delusions, paranoia and odd thinking patterns, but little "risky" behavior (other than shopping sprees), increased sex drive.

Depression: empty feelings, hopelessness, tendency to lay in bed in the dark for hours, suicidal thoughts, etc so on.

Could this be something other than bipolar?
Nothing wrong with the thyroid or anything else on the blood test

Does one have to be extremely risky like in the movie Mr. Jones ?
Or can their mania be extreme agitation/irritable ?

I have seen many Psychiatrists and they didn`t diagnose me with Bipolar right away. Ì`m not a doctor, but the mania sounds similar to mine, as the depression. It took me along time to accept the diagnoses and keep on the medications. (which is a must!) You are absolutely untitled to 2nd, even 3rd options, but yes it sounds like Bipolar I to me.

Dealing With Separation Anxiety Quotes:

" People gather bundles of sticks to build bridges they never cross. By Author Unknown Find out about Dealing With Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety For Your Dog

Lots of people feel anxious when they're alone for long periods of time. But you may not realize that dogs feel the same way sometimes, too!

If you come home from being away to find your dog has torn up furniture, soiled the floor, or you get a report from neighbors that your dog barked and howled the whole time you were gone, your dog probably has separation anxiety problems. Unfortunately, many dog owners think their dogs are acting out of anger at being left alone or because they are "bad dogs." This leads to you handling the problem as bad behavior, which won't solve it. One of the keys to dealing with separation anxiety in dogs is understanding what it is, and why some dogs don't deal with being alone as well as others.

First, you should know that dogs are social animals. Their mentality is based on living in a pack (much like our family structure), so when they're left alone, they don't handle it well. Their instinct is to find the rest of their pack, and when they can't do that, they become agitated. This leads to the behavior that frustrates owners when they get home.

If you suspect that your dog has separation anxiety, there are some signs and symptoms you can look for that can help. When you're home, does your dog cling to you and demand constant attention? Does your dog start to get upset when you're getting ready to go out? When you're away, does your dog whine, bark, or howl the whole time you're gone? Is your dog restless while you're away? Is your dog destructive, or does your dog soil the carpets or floor in several areas while you're gone? If so, your dog most likely isn't simply bored, but is having anxiety at being separated from you.

It takes a lot of patience and love to deal with your dog's separation anxiety. Essentially, you have to train your dog to know that it's safe when home alone, and help your dog to know that you'll always come home, no matter how long it thinks you've been gone.

If your dog has mild separation anxiety, one way you can help is to make sure your dog has a variety of dog toys to play with while you're gone. A good selection of dog toys will help keep your pet occupied while you're away, distracting it from looking for you.

Getting dog toys may sound too easy, but with mild separation anxiety, it could be that all your dog needs is something to occupy its time until you get home. Making sure there are lots of toy options available could save a lot of anxiety for your dog, as well as frustration for you!

In addition to helping to keep your dog occupied while you're gone, dog toys can also help keep your dog from chewing on objects and furniture in your home. If there's a dog toy to chew on, you may save yourself from having to replace things at home.

Separation anxiety can be a serious issue for dogs, but with patience, love, and some great dog toys, you shouldn't have any problem helping your dog feel safer alone, and keeping your home from being destroyed. And that will mean a happier home for everyone!

Anxiety Disorder Nos Quotes:

If worrying were an Olympic sport you'd get the gold for sure. By Stephenie Geist Find out about Anxiety Disorder Nos

Diagnosing And Treating Anxiety Disorder

In this day and age of juggling work and family, people are under more stress than ever. What may be a temporary bump in the road for some, can be downright debilitating for others. When people refer to anxiety they are often referencing a "feeling" that they get under exorbitant amounts of stress. And we have all experienced what is considered to be anxiety at one time or another. Anxiety disorder, however, is something very different; a general term that medical professionals use to describe a variety of psychological conditions related to fear, anxiety, and phobias.

Most noticeable, anxiety disorder can interfere with everyday activities, getting in the way of work responsibilities, social activities, and personal relationships. Even the most commonplace activities - shopping, driving; even leaving the house - can seem insurmountable to those suffering from an anxiety disorder. The conditions associated with anxiety disorder are numerous and not everyone feels them acutely as others. But these conditions are considered to be a disorder if they are ongoing, irrational, and interfere with daily life.

People who suffer from anxiety in any capacity will report varied emotions when faced with situations that activate their fight or flight response. This feeling of heightened anxiety can also be described as fear - an emotion that the body reacts to by releasing adrenalin throughout the body. When we are not able to calm this reaction - when the fear or anxiety takes over - the adrenalin takes over as well and a host of physiological reactions ensue. Those with anxiety report increased heart rate, sweating, the inability to catch their breath, and paralyzing fear.

Thankfully, there are a number of excellent medications on the market today that have been designed to help people who suffer from anxiety. But in order to treat sufferers appropriately, it is necessary to determine the anxiety disorder subcategory from which the patient suffers.

Generalized anxiety disorder refers to ongoing and persistent fear and anxiety that comes and goes with no particular catalyst. A sufferer of generalized anxiety may feel a heightened state of awareness, fear, and worry most of the time - manifesting itself in a host of physical symptoms including body tension, sleep disorders, headaches, stomach ailments, and heart palpitations.

panic disorder refers to episodes of anxiety generally provoked by one or several catalysts. The sufferer reacts to a particular stress by experiencing heightened anxiety and panic translated to often severe physical symptoms that sometimes include hyperventilation, dizziness, shaking, and incapacitating fear. Many new sufferers of panic disorder have confused the symptoms of the condition with those experienced during a heart attack.

Social anxiety is anxiety experienced in any social situation, rendering the sufferer incapable of being within groups of people without feeling embarrassed or scrutinized. Often the anxiety is so great that those suffering from this disorder avoid most social interaction.

Phobias also fall under the umbrella of anxiety and include agoraphobia - where sufferers limit their visitation to places because of their fear of anxiety surfacing; many agoraphobics have difficulty leaving their homes for this reason. Other phobias are included in this subcategory as well; in essence, a phobia is an irrational and ongoing fear of a particular place, situation, or object. Often, the fear is so great that people will avoid the catalyst altogether.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is anxiety that is manifested through compulsive behavior - activities that the sufferer can not help but complete. Such disorders vary in severity and circumstance; those who suffer most strongly experience very real feelings of dread if they do not complete certain repetitive, often ritualistic behaviors - checking locks, counting steps, etc. Often the OCD sufferer is completely aware of how irrational their behavior is but they are unable to stop doing it nonetheless.

There are many comprehensive medications on the market today that have made significant strides in managing and even eliminating many disorders of this kind. Those who live with an anxiety disorder no longer have to suffer at the hand of their irrational thoughts; with proper medical diagnosis, supervision, and pharmaceutical intervention if necessary, anxiety need no longer run the show.

Worry is a complete cycle of inefficient thought revolving about a pivot of fear. By Author Unknown Find out about Dog Anxiety

How To Train Your Dog Out Of Separation Anxiety

If you thought that separation anxiety only happened in humans, you are incorrect. Your dog can suffer from separation anxiety as well. Fortunately, you can train your dog to get over it.

It is vital in any type of dog training to assert your dominance as the pack leader. Establishing yourself as the alpha will get rid of most of your dog's behavioral problems. Most dogs who have separation anxiety feel they are the alpha, and thus, get upset when you leave him as he feels he has to take care of you and worries about you while you are gone.

You also do not want your dog to be very attached to you. If your dog is more independent, he will not have as many issues when you leave him for a time. Have others in the home take on caring and feeding tasks for the dog, so he doesn't only see you as his sole source of love and attention. In addition, do not make it a big deal every time you leave the house or arrive home.

It is important to utilize positive reinforcement methods so your dog can learn that it is not bad when he is alone. Always ignore his behavior when it is bad and reward good behavior. A good example is commanding him to stay and then walking out of the room. If he stays sitting there when you leave and come back into the room, give him a treat and healthy rub on the head. He will learn that it is okay for him to be in one place and you in another.

Consistency is important, so practice this technique regularly during the day, going further and further away from your dog each time and taking longer and longer to return to your dog. Make sure to always reward him upon your return if he has stayed in place and waited patiently for you to come back.

Each time your dog gets up to follow you, take him back to his original position and remind him that he has to stay there until you come back. However, do not punish your dog for not staying as this will have a negative impact on your training attempts.

Whatever method of training you choose, make sure that you are training your dog in a positive manner.
