It's now quite clear that Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil are good for your health. But what about during pregnancy?Should you take Omega 3 during pregnancy?
There's a few questions here. Firstly is fish oil safe to take in pregnancy? Absolutely. There are no documented risks to taking fish oil capsules during pregnancy, for the normal healthy mother.
Secondly, what are the benefits of Omega 3 in pregnancy? This is really 2 questions. What are the benefits to the mother, and what are the benefits to the fetus, or to the infant after birth?
Studies have shown a wide range of benefits to healthy (and unhealthy) adults from taking more Omega 3 fats. The same benefits should apply to any pregnant woman. And more, see below.
But equally importantly what benefits are there to the fetus or the baby, later, from the mother taking fish oil supplements during pregnancy?
Well studies have shown quite a wide range of benefits. About 95% of adults in the US are deficient in DHA, the most important of the Omega 3 fatty acids. You get DHA from fish oil.
There is a high percentage of fats in the brain, primarily DHA. The fetal brain develops, mainly during the third trimester, needing plenty of DHA. During this time it has a high demand for essential fatty acids. And if there is a deficiency this has implications for later brain performance.
Studies have suggested that taking fish oil during pregnancy and thereby boosting the supply of DHA to the fetus can have the following benefits to the fetus:
Improved brain function. Increased ability to concentrate as a child. Improvements in hand/eye coordination. Improvement in the ability to concentrate. Better sleep patterns in infancy. A beneficial, or preventative effect for ADHD. Improvements in visual acuity.

And there are also studies that low levels of DHA during pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of need for a cesarean.
That's a pretty impressive list. Lets look at the benefits of taking fish oil capsules during pregnancy to the mother again.
Lower risk of postpartum depression. Reduced risk of breast cancer. Lower risk of developing pre-eclampsia. Reduced risk of a cesarean birth.
Convinced to take fish oil supplements during your pregnancy yet? Remember, around 95% of the population are deficient in Omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil, and that doesn't change when you're pregnant, unless you make it change.
So should you eat fish for your Omega 3 fats? Well that's fine, except that you'd better not eat too much because there are US government agencies like the FDA that tell us not to eat a lot of fish, especially during pregnancy, as it is contaminated with nasty toxins like mercury. So how do you get your DHA in pregnancy? You take fish oil supplements. The good ones aren't contaminated. Not all are good.

What drugs are usually safe to take during pregnancy? Anti-depressants? Ambien? Konopin? Tylenol? etc?
I'm on Wellbutrin, which I know I need to talk to my doctor about before i get pregnant. But I am so afraid that just going off of it will make my depression come back even worse. And with all those hormones swirling around, woohoo!! Also, I have bad allergies and asthma, and chronic insomnia for which I take Ambien for. I presume that I will have to learn how to live without these drugs for awhile? Sometimes they say that the mother taking drugs can sometimes outweigh the risks of going off the drugs. With my history of depression and anxiety, I have a feeling I might be one of those people....but I definitely would not want to cause any harm to my unborn baby. I know I should talk to my doctor, and I will, but I wanted to hear any of your experiences with this kind of situation?

No one one here can give you a safe enough answer. Talk to your doctor. Talk to another doctor too to get another opinion. Talk to your pharmacists, or a variety of them from different stores that have pharmacy's you can contact people at. Get the answers from people who work in that type of field and deal with those important questions. Make a list of medications (perscribed, AND over the counter meds)/foods/mulitvitamins that they tell you are unsafe...a make a list of the ones they tell you are safe. Ask if they have lists already made up.
Anti-depressants are usually a no no. But in some cases they may be nessesary. Don't forget your moods throughout the pregnancy will have an impact on the child. This is something you have to talk to your doctor about, and something you may have to make the best educated choice.
Most drugs have a potential for harm (unless we know for sure otherwise), as we do not know if they cause harm or not....you can't very well test pharmacutical medications on a pregnant women like you can on mice.
Also something else you might want to take into consideration. Keep an eye on the things you eat...as any chemicals contained within the food maybe transfered to the growing child. Breating air in the city (all the exuast, and smog), is very unhealthy for the babe.
