Panic Attacks And Panic Disorder

A panic attack is a sudden feeling of extreme anxiety accompanied by significant physical symptoms such as trembling, sweating and shortness of breath. They are usually accompanied by an overwhelming fear of catastrophe - the person may feel they are dying or suffering a heart attack, or they may fear they are going mad. They can occur in response to specific situations (such as crowded areas) or spontaneously and with no obvious cause. They are usually short-lived (lasting a few minutes) but are so unpleasant that a person may live in fear of it happening again - in many cases, this will lead to the person avoiding situations that they think will trigger an attack ("avoidance behaviour").

Panic attacks quite commonly accompany other anxiety conditions such as generalised anxiety and specific phobias (particularly Agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces). However they can occur outwith these other conditions - a study in 1994 found that 3 people in every 100 had experienced panic attacks alone.

Panic Disorder is the term used by psychiatrists for those psychological conditions in which panic attacks predominate.

Psychological Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Intense anxiety
Fear of dying
Fear of losing control or going mad
Depersonalisation (the unpleasant feeling that you are not "real" or are detached from yourself)
Derealisation (the unpleasant feeling that your environment is "fake" or you are an "actor in a play")

Physical Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Shortness of breath or feeling "smothered"
Choking
Palpitations (feeling the heart racing or beating irregularly)
Chest pain
Sweating
Dizziness or feeling faint
Nausea or abdominal discomfort
Flushing of the skin or feeling chilled
Trembling or shaking

The feeing of being unable to breath can lead to a compensatory increase in breathing rate (hyperventilation) by the person. This in turn can affect the body adversely, leading to both a worsening of the physical symptoms above and additional symptoms:

Physical Symptoms of Hyperventilation

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Numbness or tingling sensations in the hands, feet and face
Headache
Weakness
Spasms of the hand and foot muscles

In a panic attack, people will usually experience at least 4 of the above symptoms, although most experience many more than this. For a diagnosis of Panic Disorder, the person will experience at least 4 panic attacks in a 4-week period, or experience significant fear of a further attack (and exhibit avoidance behaviour) for 4 weeks following a single episode.

Treatment

If the panic attacks are associated with other conditions such as generalised anxiety, phobia or depression, then the appropriate course of action is to address these underlying issues first - the panic attacks should subside as these other issues are resolved.

If the panic attacks are the main problem, then (as with most psychological problems) two courses of action are available - drug treatment and psychological therapies.

The drug treatment of panic attacks limited. Sedative drugs such as the Benzodiazepines (e.g. Diazepam (Valium)) are very effective in the short term, but are highly addictive and can lead to dependence. Further, when these drugs are withdrawn, a resurgence of the panic is likely. Antidepressants, particularly the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Citalopram (Cipramil) and Paroxetine (Seroxat), are licensed for use in panic disorder. They can cause an initial worsening of symptoms when first taken, and can cause other side effects such as gastro-intestinal disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Drug treatments are not as effective as psychological therapies in these conditions.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive therapy for the treatment of panic attacks and panic disorder. Their research has shown it to be more effective than any drug treatments. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (nlp) involve the patient seeing a therapist on a one-to-one basis for hour-long sessions. The total treatment course is typically between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session a week. The therapies involve an explanation of the psychological and physical symptoms of panic attacks, and may involve the deliberate precipitation of a panic attack during a session. The aim is to reduce the fear associated with the physical symptoms - this fear is often a cause of the attacks itself and the associated avoidance behaviours. Once the fear of the panic attacks is reduced, the attacks themselves will lessen in frequency and severity and, hopefully, disappear altogether.

Despite the clear recommendations by NICE, the availability of Cognitive Therapy remains limited in the NHS. If your GP or local Mental Health Trust is unable to provide the appropriate treatment for your condition, they may be able to recommend a therapist in the private sector.

I have been getting heart palpitations when I eat a low calorie diet?

I usually try to eat around 1500 calories a day. I have been losing weight off and on with a low calorie diet for about 3.5 years. I have lost about 60 pounds, and I am about half way to my ideal weight. It's going much slower than I want, and it's partly because I get heart palpitations and panic attacks if I eat less than 1600 calories a day for more than 4 days. If I try to eat less than 1000 calories it gets really bad.

Exercise seems to help a little to relieve anxiety, but I still feel my heart pounding slightly when I am at rest. When I eat 2500 calories or more my heart beat becomes inperceptible again. I am considering changing my weight loss program to about 2000 calories a day, and to keep increasing the distance of my walking or bike riding until I am at a nearly marathon level, so I won't need to eat less than normal calorie intake to lose weight.

This may be just purely coincidental and not really related to the number of calories you are consuming. Maybe there is some unknown variable at work here. I would advise you to speak directly to your doctor regarding your concerns.

i get rele bad panic attacks and well im starting to get pissed i cant stand i throw up it feels like inside my head is spinning and i hate it i try calming down but i it doesnt work so anyone have any help that will make me calm down (ive seen alot of doctors and therapist and im taking pills still dont work) i also cant do anything cuz if i start running or playing a sport i get it so i cant play and if my friend is over i will get it then i will have to lay down and he just has to play video games or watch t.v help plz

YOu need to go back to your doctor and try a different medication. For some reason the one you have is not the right one for you and isn't helping you. You need to go be put on a different one that will help you. Try a different therapist or a different type of therapy. Relax. And the best cure is putting yourself through things when you feel like this. If sports make you anxious play them anyways. At the end of the season you will have accomplished a sport with anxiety and that is huge! Best of luck!

The Need to Stop Panic Attacks

If you are suffering from the following symptoms when you are feeling nervous, you are most probably under a panic attack. According to the American Psychological Association, the symptoms of a panic attack usually last approximately thirty minutes. They can be as short as 15 minutes, and in certain cases, even hours.

Anxiety symptoms

1. Headaches.

2. Chest pain. This is usually a psychological effect and is often perceived as a heart attack. This is actually harmless and does not pose any life-threatening danger. However, always seek a doctor's advice when in doubt.

3. Dizziness. It is a condition whereby the victim feels lightheadedness, sometimes even confused and disorientated. It is often linked to hyperventilation (see below).

4. Hyperventilation. It occurs when you are breathing faster than normal. This reduces the carbon dioxide level in your blood, which in turn raises the pH level of your blood. The higher pH level will affect our muscles and nerves, which in turn results in dizziness (see above).

5. Feeling nauseous. This is a common symptom. When a person is feeling nervous, the brain will induce vomiting so that the person can 'feel better'. This is a natural mechanism that our body possesses to get rid of toxins in the body.

6. Trembling. This is the involuntary movement of muscles in the body, usually in the hands. Other symptoms related to trembling include a shaky voice and feeling 'cold'. That is why we often hear the phrase 'he trembled in fear'.

The need to stop panic attacks

1. When a panic attack strikes, it can often leave a person feeling helpless and inferior. The only way to overcome an anxiety attack is to tackle the problem from the root.

2. Save yourself the embarrassment. You need not come up with some dumb excuses whenever a panic attack strikes. In a worse-off situation, you might be chasing away your potential date!

3. A recent study suggests that women during menopause with many occurrences of panic attacks have 3 times the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. However, the results are not conclusive enough to prove the relationship between panic attacks and heart damage.

Chest pain after panic attack?

I just had a severe panic attack a little over an hour ago, it was so bad that I think it was a near breakdown.

But it's been over for about an hour now and my chest still really hurts, there's a sharp pain and burning sensation where my heart is. I feel dizzy and want to vomit as well.

What should I do?
I'm only 20

How old are you? If you are over 35, you should go to the E.R. for safety's sake even though you are pretty sure it was a panic attack. Chest pain is absolutely normal to have during a panic attack, but if you are over 35 you are at greater risk for a heart attack, and heart attacks don't always feel the way we think a heart attack will. If you are over 35, better safe than sorry.

Now with that disclaimer out of the way, it really sounds like you are just having normal panic attack symptoms and the fall-out from that kind of attack. Everyone is a little bit different, but there are a handful of symptoms that are experienced across the board when it comes to panic attacks. Those symptoms are rapid heart rate, chest tightness/pain, feeling like you can't breathe, nausea/vomiting, feeling trapped, feeling hot or having chills, sweating, shaking, dizziness, feeling disconnected from your body (dissociation), etc.

Panic attacks are not fun, as someone with panic disorder I can tell you that from years of experience, I absolutely understand how you're feeling right now and it's terrible. But it will pass. Right now your chest probably still hurts because you are tense from the panic attack, and your sympathetic nervous system is kicked into high gear.

Try to take deep, relaxing breaths, drawing air all the way into your lungs through your nose slowly for three seconds, then slowly releasing it through your mouth for three seconds. When you are breathing in, imagine that you are breathing in cool, refreshing air, and when you breathe out, imagine that all of the panic and bad feelings and hotness are being blown out. In with the good, out with the bad. This kind of visualization while you deep breathe can help calm you down a lot faster.

If you have any, brew some chamomile tea, or another caffeine-free tea. Lay down in a dark room for a little while until you feel better. You can also try progressive muscle relaxation. Focus on one part of your body (like balling up your fists) and make those muscles as tight as possible. Hold it for five seconds, then release, and focus on how good it feels to release all that tension. Then move up to your arms, your shoulders, down to your back, your legs, your calves, up into your stomach... group by group, contract and then relax your muscles and focus on how that feels. When you feel yourself physically letting go of the tension in each muscle group, it helps you relieve your overall tension and anxiety.

in 5th grade i had a panic attack after seeing a video about puberty for girls. all the other girls in my class were laughing at that stuff, but i wasn't.

The child when they have kids will most likely become extremely strict or either they won't enforce rules at all or barely. I personally think its a bad thing for parents to be overly strict because when the kids become parents, there children will either be out of control, or the parents won't allow them to be able to do anything.
