How can I get help/medication for depression without insurance in California?

I'm in California, I lack insurance nor do I have money to see psychologists psychiatrists out of pocket. I don't qualify for medi-cal and am not actively suicidal (so psych wards/5150 are out). I've tried a few sliding scale therapy options, but I don't think I can make progress without medication, due to really serious issues with volition.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment Can Make All The Difference

Strangely antidepressants are not normally included in bipolar disorder treatment plan for depressive episodes as they don’t tend to work very well.
Once the bipolar disorder treatment is underway the next step could be to begin cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) so that the sufferer can start to recognise what triggers their bipolar disorder and learn ways to avoid these triggers. Therapy of this form can be hugely successful if the sufferer is willing to try this type of bipolar disorder treatment. By being able to manage their different moods a bipolar sufferer is helping to reduce the number and severity of depressive and manic episodes. Alternative bipolar disorder treatments are also quite popular with yoga and meditation being two of the most widely used by sufferers around the world.
Although there is no known cure for bipolar disorder there are a number of ways that bipolar disorder treatment can help sufferers and there is constant research into finding more ways. Whats the best treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder?

I live in an area wereby resources are low and therefore get the feeling the treatment I am recieving is just not ideal for my kind of disorder and more suited to depression and anxiety patients who would otherwise be reclusive and housebound which I am not.
I have been attending a day hospital pshychiatric unit for five months, 4 days a week and once a week psychology counciling. The councelling is good but the rest I find dimeening and barely stretches the brain beyond kindergarten levels! It tends to be activities which are supposed to be 'distraction', but I somehow do not find it all direct /intensive enough.
I was on medication but can no longer take as I am pregnant.
I am desperate for recovery!

To tell you the truth, most Day Treatment programs are a colossal waste of time and amount to little more than babysitting. CBT and specifically DBT are the most effective treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder according to the research, however I have found a psychodynamic orientation which borrows heavily from CBT and DBT to be the most effective therapy. DBT is often taught in a group and if there is a DBT group in your Day Program that is worth attending. If you live in either Michigan, Texas or California or can affors admission to the Day program at either location that is specifically designed for trauma related illnesses you would be well advised to do so.
Forestview Hospital is the one in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Charter Oaks is the one in Dallas, Texas. The other is in Del Amo, California and i believe that is Charter Oaks as well. They are all supervised by Colin Ross and offer exceedingly good programming and expertly trained therapists.
Don't waste your time in a day program that offers little in the way of real therapy unless you are extremely self-destructive and your behavior may endanger your pregnancy or unless you are very prone to repetitive crises and need the daily sup[port a therapist can offer at a day program. Seek volunteer work instead and use your therapy sessions to process the interpersonal issues that arise there as the work will be more meaningful to you and you'll have the chance to interact with healthier individuals which in itself will give you more opportunity to grow.

James D Herbert, PHD, associate professor of clinical psychology at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, says that cognitive behavioral therapy is his choice for treating panic disorders. Cognitive-behavior therapy is made up of two parts: One is to identify and modify the thinking patterns that produces anxiety (cognitive therapy), and lessening anxiety by exposing the patient to fearful scenarios (behavior therapy).

OK, its not really public speaking, just a presentation in front of my one of my classes. The problem is I'm usually extremely nervous about such things. Last time I had to present in front of the class I almost had a panic attack. Its not like me, usually Im cool and laid back. Any tips (Other than picturing people naked?)

i just had a panic attack and it was my second one in a two-week time span. i've never had one before that. also i had this weird muscular pain inside my body typically where i feel cramps. only it hurt worse the more i emptied my bladder. the more empty my bladder was the more it hurt. i was wondering if you had any idea what this could be and is it serious enough to go to the hospital with no insurence?

What is the best medication for panic attacks?

I sometimes get panic attacks during highly stressful situations. My symptoms include: sweating, increased heart rate, short shallow breathing, dizziness, confusion, extreme fear, shaking, even diarrhea, vomiting, and fainting. I've seen a RN/counselor about this and she prescribed Propanolol HCl, which is also a mild stage fright prevention medicine. It has been working well and usually prevents any panic attacks when I know it's coming. Lately however, I have been needing a higher dose and it is not sufficient enough. Is there another option that is better and not a daily medication or habit forming (I only need the pills whenever I start feeling the onset of the attack, otherwise I don't use it)????

honestly I don't know what to tell you other than stress relieving practices.
Other than daily pills like SSRI's, the only other option I know that you can take when you feel an attack coming on are benzo's like Xanax but it can be habit forming...

If you have had the misfortune to suffer from a panic attack you know what a truly terrifying experience it is.

Suddenly and without warning you start to feel dizzy or light-headed, you can't seem to catch your breath, your body starts trembling or shaking and most frightening of all your heart starts to race and you can literally feel it pounding in your chest as if it is about to explode. Your mind screams: Help! I must be having a heart attack!

The first time I suffered a panic attack, I felt sure I was either having a heart attack or about to have one, and took myself off to the local hospital. Oddly, even as I was on my way to the emergency room I felt the symptoms decrease, until by the time the doctors saw me I was feeling much better. Later I was told that this is one of the ways you can tell whether it's a panic attack or heart attack. Panic attacks symptons generally decrease in a short time, whereas heart attack symptoms generally increase or stay at the same level.

After that first panic attack, I learned that my feelings and thoughts produced the physical symptoms, which in turn fed the feelings and thoughts of panic and terror. Which is why, as I was on my way to the emergency room, the focus of my thoughts naturally moved from how terryfing the symptoms were, to thinking about how much better I would feel at the hospital were I could receive help. I literally stopped myself from being panicked by the panic itself.

Panic attacks usually lasts less than ten minutes, although some of the symtoms may last longer. As soon as you feel yourself in a spiral from anxiety to sheer panic, try and focus on your breathing, and think about how you are feeling. Remind yourself that the actual fear of a panic attack feeds on itself like a raging fire, and that this fire will quickly burn itself out. Fortunately, despite their frightening nature, be reassured that panic attacks themselves do not lead to heart attacks, loss of control, mental illness or death.

A panic attack is a mental thought process that produces the physical symptoms, whereas a heart attack produces physical symptoms that leads to the mental thought process of panic.

Quite simply, you panic first, and the panic attack itself produces the symptoms that make you think you're having a heart attack. Conversely, you have the physical symtoms of a heart attack, which then produces the worry that makes you get to the hospital.

So in answer to the question, is it a panic attack or is it a heart attack, simply try and ask yourself what came first: the mental panic or the physical pain?

If you have suffered a panic attack, please either get yourself to a hospital or see your doctor to rule out any physical problems. I need to go somewhere, but the thought of going there is giving me a panic attack?

I really need to go register for classes. Its a college an hour away but the thought of driving there and registering is giving me a panic attack already, cant imagine actually being there. I have respirdone and invega (and seroquel but thats outa the question) that i can take to calm me down, but it might affect my driving abilities. Idk what i should do. :( d/x psychotic depression.

What you are going through I go through everyday of my life.

Things to keep in mind, you've done it before, you can do it again.
Everything is hard.
Deep relaxing breaths before you leave.
Don't give yourself any time to think about leaving the house. Get up get dressed and get the *hell"* out of the house as soon as you can. The more you think the worse it gets.
Give yourself permission to pull over and have a rest if you need to.
Go for a fast walk for about 5 minutes to burn off the adrenaline before you get in the car.
Have some milk it does help you calm down.
Be brave, no matter how scary it is, you can do it.
Put a rubber band on your wrist, when you feel the panic snap the rubber band real hard. The brain can't deal with two things at once, the pain of the rubber band will override the anxiety and panic.

I hope even one of these helps just a little bit, I have to go out today also........I am not going to let the panic crap stop me this time.

Remember a panic attack can only last for a certain period of time.

Driving Anxiety - 5 Tips To Stop A Panic Attack While Driving

I have a confession to make...I get really stressed out when I'm behind the wheel of a car. Well, that wasn't much of a confession was it? Because most people get stressed out, worn thin, pushed to the brink, or whatever you want to call it, when driving. It happens. A couple of times I have even felt a rush of almost overwhelming fear and anxiety while diving in heavy traffic or sometimes when going over a long high bridge. What is that anyways? The answer is: it is driving anxiety - fear of driving - freeway phobia. It goes by a lot of different names but what it is, is a type of panic attack.

Now, my mild driving anxiety has never gotten out of control, and I have always been able to calm myself by taking a few deep breaths. But there are those of us that have such a fear of driving, or fear of having an anxiety attack while driving, that they can barely get in the drivers seat anymore. For the people that fall into this really intense category of panic attacks while driving, there needs to be some sort of mechanism to retrain and calm their brains to be able to regain their ability to drive normally. There are methods and it is very possible to do.

SOME SIMPLY THINGS TO DO IF YOU ARE HAVING A PANIC ATTACK WHILE DRIVING:

1) Get in the slow lane. There is nothing like having 20 cars honking at you and passing you on the right hand side, flipping you the bird, to cause your anxiety level to escalate.

2) Breath deeply and turn on the radio if it helps. The radio often takes my mind off of my worries.

3) Slow down, you are in the slow lane now, let all the crazy SOBs pass. You do not have to participate in their game of: "I'll get there before you will."

4) Open a window, get some fresh air, even if it's freezing outside. The cold air will give you something to think about besides your racing heart.

5) If you need to - pull SAFELY off onto the shoulder. Give it a five minute rest. Don't get out of the car, best to just breath deeply and let things pass.

You need to be able to recognize that these are irrational fears you are having and that as long as you keep your wits about you then you are perfectly safe. I know that is hard to do when you are traveling down the road at 70 mph with a car on your tail and another one cutting you off every 15 seconds.

Unfortunately driving and stress go hand in hand especially when it comes to city driving these days. Stress and driving anxiety can be overcome, but first recognize that it is somewhat normal to feel some anxiety while driving. What is not normal is letting this driving anxiety control you, causing such fear as to interfere with your normal day to day life. If your driving anxieties get out of hand, get some help. There are some wonderful programs that can really work when it come to quieting your irrational fear of driving. Good Luck and Best Wishes!

I think I had a panic attack while riding in the car with someone who was driving - how do I prevent it?

It was night, and he was driving around a curve and I freaked out. I think I scared him - I know I scared him. I started breathing really fast and grabbing the seat. I was so scared - how do I prevent this from happening in the future?

I get this alot too. If it is an unsafe driver, I would drive that person the next time. Don't let your self get over worked. Make sure you have your seat belt on and everything will be fine.
