Depression Parents Children Quotes:

When one has too great a dread of what is impending one feels some relief when the trouble has come. By Joseph Joubert Find out about Depression Parents Children

Why Are So Many Young Kids Depressed

At one time, young people were considered immune to sadness. Now mental health professionals know better. Even preschoolers can develop symptoms of depression, such as irritability, sadness, and withdrawal.

Abela, Associate Professor of Psychology at McGill and Director of the Cognitive Behaviour therapy Clinic at the Montreal Children's Hospital, says the realization that children can become clinically depressed is a recent development - within the last 20 years. But most studies of childhood depression focused on teenagers on the assumption that younger children don't have the cognitive capability and big-picture perspective to draw the negative conclusions that fuel depression.

Now Abela's research indicates that even the sandbox set can become depressed. He has found that small children, indeed, have already developed the cognitive factors that can lead to depression. Depression among children, he has found, respects no geographic boundaries.

"In the past 15 years, China has gone through the same amount of change that Europe or North America went through in 70 years during the Industrial Revolution." Marital infidelity and divorce are skyrocketing, urbanization is ripping apart traditional family compounds - and depression rates in China now equal our own.

Depression is the most common emotional problem in adolescence and the single greatest risk factor for teen suicide says child psychiatrist Peter Jensen, director of the Centre for the Advancement of Childrens Mental Health. He also notes that depression rated have been rising over the last half century: Teens born in the 1980s are more likely to develop depression than those who were born in the 1970s, whose rate of depression is higher than for those born in the 1960s.

Parents are bound to have trouble understanding a depressed teen's confusing signals; after all, who does not want to think of their child as happy and confident. But parents must pay attention to serious depression; the risks are too great if they don't.

No one knows the reason for this steady surge in sadness, but experts point to the breakdown of families, the pressures of the information age, and increased isolation. Social environment doesnt cause depression explains psychiatrist John March, M.D., who is heading a nation-wide study of therapies for teen depression. But environmental stress can bring out depression in people who are susceptible. Depression is more than teenage angst. It is an illness of the central nervous system that is common, impairing, and lethal.

Stress may predispose individuals to an initial episode. several factors associated with physical illness may contribute to the onset or worsening of depression. These include the psychological impact of disability, decline in quality of life, and the loss of relationships.

Medication side effects may also be a contributing factor. Physical illness may also contribute directly to the onset of depression by affecting physiological mechanisms such as neurotransmitters, hormones, and the immune system.

However, the strongest predictor of depression might be cigarette smoking. Depressed teens may smoke because they think smoking will make them feel better, but nicotine alters brain chemistry and actually worsens symptoms of depression.

Discrimination is another form of a societal stressor, and it can also lead to depression. It can take many forms some as subtle as not being included in a conversation or joke, some as blatant as threats scrawled on a wall, and some as violent as brutal beatings and other hate crimes. Because it can be hard to deal with individually, discrimination is a particularly sinister form of stress. By banding together, however, those who experience discrimination can take action to protect themselves, challenge the ignorance and hateful assumptions that fuel bigotry, and promote a healthier environment for all.

In the last decade, there have been reports of greater intolerance among young people and a greater tolerance for overt expressions and acts of hatred on college and university campuses. In a study by Schellenberg, Hirt, and Sears, attitudes toward homosexuals among students at a Canadian university were measured. Their findings showed that (1) attitudes toward gay men were more negative than attitudes towards lesbians; (2) students in the faculties of Arts or Social Science had more positive attitude than students in Business and Science; (3) women were more positive than men and (4) attitudes toward gay men also improved with time spend at college, but only for male students.

Genetic depression in child not adopted vs. child adopted?

If a child grows up and their parents tell them that when they were little(the parents), they had depression, and that depression is genetic in their family,so that the children might get depression in their lifetime because its genetic.
Now on the other hand...A child is adopted and this child has a genetic history of depression. Now if the child dosen't know that they were adopted and they do have a genetic history of of depression....
my question is: Is the child who grows up with a family that tells them that they have a chance of getting depression going to get it (at a higher chance) than the child who has it in its background but isn't told about it.
If this is confusing pls tell me to add more details. Its very hard to word but thanks for awnsering.

If it's going to develop there's not much to prevent it. Nature vs. nuture...I think it's a bit of both.
I think the person who's been warned would keep it in the back of their mind and analyze feelings closer. And the person who doesn't know might miss important clues and delay a diagnosis.

For those that don't know, ibogaine comes from the iboga plant and is illegal in the US (but not in Canada, Mexico, and many European countries). Negotiating a better Salary in a depressed Job Market

Getting a job that you are truly happy with is often about weighing up what you really want out of your employment and then prioritising what is most important to you. Office environment, job description, colleagues, location and benefits are all under consideration when applying for a dream job. However, these things are often seem to become less important when it comes down to the right salary. By far the most important negotiation you will have is your salary negotiation. Here are a few tips and hints to help you receive your full worth in remuneration, despite the current job market.

The first thing to remember is that if you are being offered a position in today’s market, the company must really NEED you and your skill set. Jobs are so few and far between that anyone being offered a position is definitely the best possible candidate. Companies and recruiters alike are being inundated with applications for available vacancies, so they can be as picky as they like when making a job offer. If they have offered you a position, take it as a sign that they have identified you as an asset and tackle your salary negotiation with this in mind.

Keeping the above- mentioned point in mind, it is best not to mention your expected salary until you have actually been offered the role. By doing this you are putting yourself in a position to request the salary you feel is accurate and fair, instead of simply accepting what is offered to you during the interview process, for fear of not being considered further if you don’t. By the time a company has chosen to offer YOU a role, despite loads of competing candidates, they will be more open to salary negotiation if it means avoiding the interview process all over again.

Research is the key to a successful salary negotiation. Browse vacancies online, enquire with recruiters, or even ask friends and family you may have who work in similar industries and roles. It is important that you have a realistic point of comparison when entering into salary negotiations. Firstly, it is important to know market-related salary norms in order to where you stand. This will establish realistic expectations as well as ensuring that you come across as knowledgeable when dealing with a potential employer. Making outlandish salary demands without any supporting evidence or justification will just annoy an employer. Secondly you need to ensure that you know what is required in order for you to be able to support yourself and your family.

If you are at a point where you feel a salary offer is too low, but also can’t afford to run the risk of losing a job offer altogether by pushing salary negotiations, then there is an alternative approach in attempting to meet half way. The best way to tackle a negotiation in this situation is to give a salary offer some time and thought before deciding to accept or decline. Once an offer is made and you feel that the salary offer is too low, ask for a little time to consider everything, making sure to express that the time for additional consideration is due to the salary offering being lower than what you had expected. This will give you the opportunity to gauge how flexible the company is as they may choose to offer more in the interim for fear of you rejecting the offer. If they choose not to offer anymore, you may not be entirely happy with the salary, however you won’t have lost out on an employment opportunity.

A great starting point is using the Internet to search for available vacancies. From legal jobs to finance, banking and marketing, all can be found and researched at one of the many online recruitment websites.

Depression Nausea Fatigue Quotes:

If you see ten troubles coming down the road you can be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you. By Calvin Coolidge Find out about Depression Nausea Fatigue

Morning Fatigue

Brighten your morning.

Wake up at the same time, and bathe yourself in sunlight. It enables your circadian rhythms, which are governed by your body’s “master clock” in the hypothalamus gland, to stay in sync with the 24-hour day. In the absence of light, your body’s sleep-wake cycle wants to delay by an average of twelve minutes every day and work on a 24.2-hour rhythm. Experts don’t understand why, but think it may relate to the sun’s seasonal shifts. That means your body wants to keep pushing your bedtime to later, but if you let that happen and still have to get up at the same time every day, you’re going to be tired.

chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Morning Cortisol Response

People who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often endure months of persistent fatigue, muscle pain, and impaired memory and concentration. Understanding the physiological changes that accompany CFS, however, has been difficult, but a new study accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) reveals that abnormally low morning concentrations of the hormone cortisol may be correlated with more severe fatigue in CFS patients, especially in women.

Fatigue and morning sickness

So after a month of experiencing fatigue and just total loss of exercise motivation I went to my Dr and much to my shock I'm pregnant! It is still sinking in, found out on Wednesday and while my husband and I are thrilled it’s still damn scary.

Causes

There are many possible physical and psychological causes of fatigue. Some of the more common are: An allergy that leads to hay fever or asthma, Anemia (including iron deficiency anemia), Depression or grief ,Persistent pain

Home Care

Here are some tips for reducing fatigue: Get adequate, regular, and consistent amounts of sleep each night. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Exercise regularly. Learn better ways to relax. Try yoga or meditation.

Early pregnancy: Morning sickness, fatigue and other common symptoms:

Early pregnancy has its share of discomforts. Some, such as mild nausea and fatigue, are almost universal. Others, including nosebleeds and bladder infections, are less common.

Exercise Tips for Fatigue and Morning Sickness

Fatigue is a normal part of pregnancy, especially during the first and third trimester. This doesn't mean you should ignore it or resign yourself to being continually exhausted. As always, fatigue is a signal from your baby that you should slow down. Take the hint: Make rest and relaxation a priority. Cut back on the nonessential activities. Make sure your spouse or partner and family members are helping out with the household chores. If possible, try to get extra sleep at night or take a nap during the day. Make sure your diet is nutritious and well balanced.

Meditate in short bursts:

Take some time out from the daily grind and spend it on meditation. Even in the span of 3 minutes, meditation can decrease the stress hormones that tense your muscles and constrict your blood vessels, and boost endorphins. Quick time-outs throughout your workday are also easier to fit into a busy schedule than a longer one at the end.

What are the symptoms of thyroid problem?

are any of these associated with it?

diaroea
nausea
dizzy
tremors
palpitations
headaches
hunger
depression
hair falling out (not in clumps but strands)
fatigue and sometimes insomnia

I've had these symptoms for coming upto 3 years and have can i point out i have a severe needle phobia which is being worked on by a therapist...which is the reason i haven't had any tests done.

I also have had agoraphobia for 3 years.
thanks

It is possible that you have a hyper thyroid yes. I suggest asking your doctor for a blood test to put your mind at ease. I went to my doctor 5 years ago with all those symptoms and more. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and stayed on PTU tablets for 3 years. 12 months ago I had radioactive idodine to kill off my thyroid which didnt work. 3 weeks ago I had a total Thyroidectomy. Best thing I ever did in my life :) . I now feel normal (despite the side effects which I am experiencing). If I were you I would go to the doctor soon for blood tests as if it is a thyroid problem you really need to do something about it before you end up like I did. It caused alot of panic attacks for me also, and I had never had before I was hyper. As for the needle phobia, Take a couple of panadol before you go, and take a book to read while they are taking blood. It helps to take you mind off it all. Let me know how you go :) Chin up

Depression Era Photos Quotes:

We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies. By Roderick Thorp Rainbow drive Find out about Depression Era Photos

The New Craze: Digital Photography!

What is most outstanding in the ongoing progress in digital photographic technology is that it enables everybody capture special moments of his or her lives with extra detail and precision more so now than ever. Enhancements in picture resolution and shutter velocity makes it uncomplicated for proficient photographers and novices to equally capture splendid pictures. And though a picture may not be perfect at the time it was shot, highly sophisticated photo-editing application packages (i.e. software) is capable of transforming the picture into a masterpiece of art in no time flat!

Guess What? One of the enormous rewards of digital photography is that it allows you to rapidly and without difficulty distribute your pictures and snapshots with acquaintances and relatives wherever they may be on earth via electronic mail (e-mail). Do you care to remember the hassle that you would have gone through if you tried using your old your film camera to do that?

Veteran digital or film photographers affirm that timing is, for the most part, a major important issue for shooting a first-class picture. There is only a small, fraction of time available to capture a grand shot. Be it a shot of a splendid sunset or a snapshot of athletes as they cross the finish line, your timing must be razor-sharp, this is the intuition that lets you know precisely when to depress that shutter knob. This is the reason why digital photography is an art form.
To a large extent, majority of photographers never really actualize their dream of shooting that "perfect" shot. For instance, their picture may be framed well, but the lighting is not exactly right. Or maybe they've got the lighting accurately, but they forget to use the flash or red-eye decreasing option. Instances like these give digital photography an obvious edge because it offers a brilliant method to getting the precise look you intended to capture in a picture.

Guess what? A second tremendous advantage of digital photography is its capability to print out your snapshots almost instantly. Whereas with film cameras you would have had to take the film to be processed before going back to pick them up, digital photography gives you an instant alternative!

All shots taken via a digital camera can be altered digitally via photo-enhancing software to attain its full potential - color improvement, zoomed or cropped to their finest size, red-eye reduction etc., etc. All of these editing options occur within minutes, giving you the opportunity and advantage of having the most outstanding photos ever shot.

The tag-team of a high-quality digital camera and a good photo-editing software package can achieve great things. Your camera has built-in capabilities that represent only the start of the editing potential expected of the digital photographic era.

Guess what? Another gigantic advantage of digital photography is the ability for you to tweak and change your pictures and images in any way that you please. Due to the fact that your photos are in digital files, they can be worked on in photo-editing software packages that enables you adjust the images in a variety of ways thereby enhancing its final output.

Editing software can be utilized to tweak images in any way you wish. Depression Era Photos 2 <h2>Depression Era Photos Brand New Information</h2>
Depression regarding past

I've been feeling very nostalgic about a certain period of time in my life, and I feel depressed as it gets further and further from this time. People change and the environment around me has changed.

I've grown into such an obsession with my past that I've even modified my Windows theme and looked up old candies and video games. I always listen to music from this era, and I look at photo albums from back then. I'm questioning my mental health, because I feel this is causing a serious issue.

Sometimes I just want to cry, there's nothing I can ever do. What DO I do? Is there something wrong with me? I know this has to be more than a mild case of nostalgia, because its all I ever think about now. No matter how hard I try to think about the present or future, or even bettering myself, I'm simply disinterested in the now.

Things change. People change. Life changes. I get the same away about a certain time in my life. I hear a song on the radio, or smell a certain smell and it instantly takes me back. I had a fiance for 6 years during that time. We were together through the biggest events in our lives (graduation, prom, first real jobs, first apartment, first house, first cars...) and then we split up. Two years later, he died in a car accident. I feel bad about it. Dwell on it a little. But I eventually get over it.

Give it time. Give in to what you are feeling for a while. It will eventually crawl back into it's storage space in your memory.

Depression Drugs Children Quotes:

panic at the thought of doing a thing is a challenge to do it. By Henry S. Haskins Find out about Depression Drugs Children

Is your Child Depressed? Watch Out as the Risks are Increasing!

Depression is a mental disorder that is today common even among the children. More often than not mental disorders are caused in the grown ups. But the situation is quite different nowadays. It is really a worrying prospect that our future generations are also not free from the curse of depression. It is indeed sad to know that even the children go through a number of mental complications nowadays. They also face mental dilemmas and problems. They are also vulnerable to a number of anti social elements that confuse and perplex them mentally. It becomes really difficult for them to understand what is bad and good. The saddest part is that most of the cases of children remain untreated for a long period of time. The parents also fail to take into account that their young ones are suffering one of the most killing mental disorders.

It is not that the symptoms of depression are not noticeable in the children. They show certain symptoms that are not uncommon but at the same time they are not normal also. Normally the parents think that it is quite natural for the children to show symptoms like sulking, refusal to answer to unknown people, refusal to go to school, feigning sickness etc. These symptoms are common but what is unique is that they have also been discovered as the most common symptoms of depression. The guardians, when their wards show these symptoms, concentrate on curing the symptoms and not the inherent cause. The parents also cannot be blamed. After all there are no parents who would want their children to ail in an ailment. Children undergoing depression never show a complete development in these symptoms. In short the symptoms do not cease. Because the symptoms are just the effects. The cause still exists quite strongly in the psyche of the depressed child. And if the symptoms are ignored for a long time as quite normal and mundane you might also run the risk of leading your child wayward. If the seeds of depression are allowed to remain in the child for long, the child might also get caught in the anti social elements as I mentioned earlier and might grow into juvenile delinquents.

Therefore, these kinds of symptoms on the part of the children should not be overlooked. Immediate help should be taken from the doctors to determine if the symptoms are the result of depression and complete subsequent medication should be carried out. There are ways of depression cure in children. However, they cannot be exactly administered depression drugs just like that. Let us take for example the case of Xanax online. Depression drug Xanax is quite successful in the adults but it cannot be given to the children without medical consultation. Even while administrating to the adults Xanax prescription should be attained first. The condition is also applied to those who buy Xanax online. Just because depression should not be neglected in the children, does not mean that you give them depression pills on your own. This kind of unwarranted action might put your child's life at stake.

what does everyone think of the supreme court's decision on child rape?

I think it SHOULD be elligible for the death penalty. To do something so evil and twisted to a child is the worst thing you could do in your life. You are killing part of them, which few ever recover from. A lifelong battle with depression, drugs, and/or alcohol will ensue, i am sure. I think any crime against the innocense of a child should have serious death penalty ramlifications. At least life in prison should be the penalty for such a crime.

I don't agree w/ the decision either. If you are not put to death you should have your yaya's cut off.

Depression Diagnosis Treatment Quotes:

A hundredload of worry will not pay an ounce of debt. By George Herbert Find out about Depression Diagnosis Treatment

Depression Diagnosis

Depression diagnosis is important because it helps to identify the type of depression you are suffering from. It also determines the type of treatment to be administered. This disorder can be either mild or severe and therefore treatment is administered according to the severity or the mildness of the condition. Diagnosis normally involves a thorough mental or psychological evaluation to determine whether you really have the condition or if there is another underlying cause. Depending on the type that you have, a physician will prescribe medication. Treatment can involve the use of antidepressants or therapy.

Diagnosis is normally based on the signs and the symptoms that you have exhibited over a period of time. Apart from the symptoms, a doctor will also evaluate your medical history as well as the medical history of your parents. Other factors of depression will also be put into consideration.

For you to be diagnosed for major depression, you ought to have exhibited most of the following symptoms for more than two weeks. The emotional symptoms include feeling sad, empty and hopeless. Loss of interest in the things you previously enjoyed, irritability, anxiety, feeling guilty or worthless and having trouble in making decisions. Thoughts of death and suicide are other emotional symptoms.

Physical symptoms include headaches, back pains, exhaustion, fatigue and dizziness. Others are muscle aches, joint pains and chest pains. Sleeping problems will include insomnia and hypersomnia or oversleeping. Changes in appetite and weight are other signs. All these signs and symptoms are used in depression diagnosis.

if i have manic depression, how do i get the right treatment? what is the treatment? &how do i get a diagnosis

what can you do also if you keep havin flash backs of past traumas, like when i was in supportive housin years ago with care workers, who when i was out would steal all my clothes, i couldnt prove who it was or who was doing it, this was in 2001. now i get angry at being taken advantage of and think, the injustice of it. what do flash backs mean? plus my thoughts are racing bad at the moment.
im finding it very hard to get a grip at the moment

You need to seek professional help now.
Manic depression never remembers any good times, and only results in downward spiral of mood.
If you have an HMO, consult with him or her first, and ask for a referral to psychiatry.
If you're really pushed into a corner, and feel like you are at your wits end, call 1-800-SUICIDE.
It sounds like you might have PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome with the flashbacks. On-going counseling and or medication can help with the flashbacks.

Please consult with a psychiatrist soon.

Good luck to you and don't give up.

Depression Before Period Quotes:

It's hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head. By Sally Kempton Esquire1970 Find out about Depression Before Period

What Are The Initial Signs Of Depression?

Considering that there are three common types of depression which include:

* major depression (clinical depression)

* manic depression (bipolar disorder)

* dysthymia (dysthymic disorder)

We shall address each one as best possible and go over the early signs and symptoms of each.

1. Major depression

Also known as clinical depression or unipolar depression, is classified as a type of mental disorder that is usually diagnosed when a patient displays any of the symptoms below for a period averaging about a few to 6 months.

It's often times characterized by the following signs:

* persistent feelings of sadness

* feeling hopeless or helpless

* loss of interest in usual activities or activities once enjoyed

* difficulty with relationships

* sleep disturbances (i.e., insomnia, hypersomnia)

* changes in appetite or weight

* decreased energy

* difficulty concentrating

* suicidal thoughts or attempts

* irritability, hostility, aggression

2. Manic depression

This is a major mental health problem. People diagnosed with manic depression tend to experience mood swings from periods of severe depression to periods of elation known as mania.

In its early and latter stages, it is often characterized by the following signs:

-An overly inflated self-esteem

-A decreased need for rest and sleep

-Increased distractibility and irritability

-Increased talkativeness (may include increase in rate of speech, changes topics quickly, cannot be interrupted)

-Uncharacteristically poor judgment

3. Dysthymic Disorder

This disorder is characterized by chronic depression, but with less severity than a major depression. The essential symptom for Dysthymic disorder is an almost daily depressed mood for at least two years, but without the necessary criteria for a major depression.

Being as though this is quite similar to clinical depression, dysthymia could be characterized by the following signs:

-Having a poor appetite or overeating

-Insomnia or hypersomnia

-Low energy or fatigue

-Low self-esteem

-Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions

-Feelings of hopelessness

Now, that we've gone over the early signs of each of these common depressive disorders, suffice it to say that if they are applicable to yourself or someone you know, it will be best to try to deal with the situation in these early stages.

This is a classic example of how "a stitch in time could save nine".

It is my hope that in informing you of these characteristics to look out for, it will be an easier task for you to overcome the situation.

In Friendship.

Army with a history of depression?

I was wondering if it is possible to get a waiver for prior depression or if one is even needed. I was diagnosed around 12-13 and i am now 18. I have not been taking medicine since 15. I was just going through my teens and my parents overreacted and i don't believe i have depression. How long is the period before i am clear? Will i have to see a psychiatrist to be able to get a waiver?

A recruiter and a psychologist will help. They do psych evals at the MEPS station. Now the military is going to put you through some changes you never experienced. So get your head right that you want to make it. The people that quit during my basic training were still waiting to outprocess and get discharged for their issues while we graduated. We don't need any people who can't pull their load out there.

Depression Family Member Quotes:

There is a time to take counsel of your fears and there is a time to never listen to any fear. By George S. Patton Find out about Depression Family Member

Cancer Issues : Seeing Changes in Your Friend or Family Member

Illness brings changes to our loved ones. You can expect your family member with cancer to go through physical changes and emotional ones as well. You may be expecting some of these changes. For example, the doctor may explain to you that chemotherapy can cause hair loss and weight loss. You may not be as prepared for some of the emotional changes you might see. Your loved one may be depressed or irritable and they may withdraw from you altogether. All of these reactions are normal, and it’s important to remember that each person deals with challenges differently.

As the person who has cancer changes, this is likely to cause strong emotions for you. This person you love is going through a challenging time, and it is likely to have an impact on the way they look and behave.

To see a parent ageing before your eyes can be an uncomfortable experience. A beloved partner who no longer wants to be held or caressed because touch is uncomfortable can make you feel like they have rejected your love. If a favourite uncle turns from cheerfulness to complaining, it can seem as though you have lost the real person already. Don’t deny the feelings that come up for you. Notice how you feel, and admit when you find it hard. Ways for dealing with the feelings you find vary from person to person, but can include sharing them with a friend, writing a journal or meditation.

Try as well to remember that the real person is still there inside what you see. When we look at someone we don’t only see what’s on the surface. It has been said that the eyes are the windows of the soul – so you see much of the real person in their eyes. So remember to look for the real person underneath the changes. Perhaps then you will find your emotions easier to deal with.

Bear in mind that some of the physical changes your loved one undergoes may be temporary, as they could be reactions to medications or the physical strain that comes with undergoing treatment. If the changes are temporary, remember that you’ll likely see them rebound later in the treatment cycle.

Emotional changes can be more difficult to accept, since you may want to help your loved one, but may not know how, or your help may not be accepted. In some cases, the person who has cancer may just need some time to accept the situation. In other cases, you may be able to offer support and help them work through the emotions that are causing the changes.

A diagnosis of cancer is a blow. It can wreak havoc on a person’s body and their mind. These blows can cause all sorts of changes; some of them will be temporary and some may be permanent. Offer the support that you can and maintain patience as your loved one adjusts to the changes in their life. Remember that the person you’ve loved all along is still there.

Is this a sign of depression or a personality disorder: extreme anger, physical assaulting family members?

This person has everyone else walking on eggshells. He is very angry and has attacked one family member and blames that family member for everything. He has accused this family member of talking about him all the time...which is not the case. No one in the house can have a private conversation or talk on the phone without the fear of setting this person into a tailspin.
He spends the majority of his time lying around the house looking at TV or on the computer.

Appreciate your take on this one.

could be a number of things, personality disorders, mood disorders probably paranoia associated with whatever is going on with him. Only a psychiatrist could say. If he attacked someone he needs to be hospitalized ASAP. It may be to late to from that incident, but the next time he attacks or even treatens someone, the police need to be called. Cant just leave it go.....can only get worse, and if he has already attacked someone once, cant wait for it to be attacking somone with a weapon do do somthing about it. His family cant live walking on eggshells around him.

Depression – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Why Did the Great Depression Occur?

Economists still cannot agree on what caused the Great Depression. Most however have agreed that it was a combination of events and decisions that came into play that caused the Great Depression.

It has been suggested that people who tend to get depressed may have inherited a subtle chemical abnormality in their brain. This might make them more sensitive or susceptible to one or more of the life events mentioned above.

Symptoms:

• Persistent sad, anxious or empty feelings

• Feeling constantly pessimistic

• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness

• Loss of interest in hobbies or activities

• Tiredness and loss of energy

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions

Causes

Traumatic Factors

o The loss of a loved one or death of a parent during childhood increases the chance of a person developing depression in later life.

o Being abused, neglected or abandoned during adolescence.

o Traumatic experiences, such as moving away, divorce from a partner, losing a job and a family or friend break up.

Trigger Factors

o Unemployment

o Loss of a parent, sibling or partner

o Absence of someone to talk to and confide in

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression is a type of depression that a mother experiences immediately after childbirth. It is more serious and lasts longer than 'baby blues'.

Postpartum depression occurs in approximately 10 percent of childbearing women.

The symptoms of postpartum depression include:

• Feeling sad or down often

• Frequent crying or tearfulness

• Feeling restless, irritable or anxious

• Loss of interest or pleasure in life

• Loss of appetite

• Less energy and motivation to do things

• Depressed mood—tearfulness, hopelessness, and feeling empty inside, with or without severe anxiety.

• Loss of pleasure in either all or almost all of your daily activities.

Causes

The rapid hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy and delivery may trigger depression. After childbirth, women experience a big drop in estrogen and progesterone hormone levels. Thyroid levels can also drop, which leads to fatigue and depression. These hormone dips—along with the changes in blood pressure, immune system functioning, and metabolism that new mothers experience—can all play a part in postpartum depression. It has been theorized that women who are more sensitive to these hormone imbalances develop postpartum depression.

How is postpartum depression treated?

therapy, support networks and medicines such as antidepressants are used to treat postpartum depression. Psychotherapy has been shown to be an effective treatment and an acceptable choice for women who wish to avoid taking medications while breastfeeding.

• Antidepressant medicine, which effectively relieves symptoms of postpartum depression for most women. Since breast-feeding is also important for your baby, talk to your doctor and your baby's doctor about an antidepressant medicine you can use while breast-feeding. Certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants are considered relatively safe for use while breast-feeding.

Treatment for Postpartum Depression can be as varied as the symptoms. Common approaches include:

• Creating a supportive environment for the mother

• Self-Care

• Support groups

• Counselling

• Psychotherapy

• Medication

can you get symptoms "during pregnancy" that mean you will have PND?

can you get symptoms "during pregnancy" that mean you will have post natal depression after the birth?

In my case no,

I was fine in pregnancy, I was so happy, so excited and I loved my baby so much even before he was born.

Then along he came, I was admitted to hospital 3 days after he was born again with a suspected blood clot on my lung. I thought I was going to die - I developed PND because of that.

It then took me 18 hard months to properly love my son. (Awful of me)

Some people have it mildly, some have it severe... But it doesn't start until after your child is born so you can't really have symptoms.

However you can have antepartum depression. It does mean you have a higher chance of developing PND, but it doesn't mean you will.

Hope you are ok xxx
