For many North Americans, winter's shorter days bring with them a different kind of darkness: seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, which is a type of depression that strikes mostly during the colder months of the year.

While the disorder affects many types of people, medical experts say it can be treated and the seriousness of the illness reduced by watching for symptoms and taking early action. Those affected by SAD begin to see symptoms in late fall to early winter, said Dr. Peter Swanljung at Friends Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital, in Philadelphia. "To distinguish someone from seasonal affective disorder and a major depressive disorder (like clinical depression), it usually depends on timing," he said.

The causes of SAD are not fully known, but there appears to be a relationship between depression and sunlight, Swanljung said. Northerners are more susceptible to the disorder, he said, because of the darker and shorter days - a person living in Florida is less likely to suffer from SAD than one in Maine, for example.

There are a few theories about why this connection exists, Swanljung explained. One is that the change in light exposure during the winter months effects levels of serotonin, which affects energy and mood, in the brain. Another is that SAD is related to levels of melatonin, a naturally-occurring hormone involved in regulating our sleep cycles. And a third, he said, is that the changes in the amount of daylight somehow affect our circadian rhythm, our body's 24-hour clock.

A recent study from researchers at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto discovered that there are greater levels of serotonin transporters in the brain in the winter than in the summer, the first time such a difference has been found. When there was less light, more serotonin transporters were found. Serotonin transporters remove serotonin, so the finding suggests that there is more serotonin removal in the brain in the winter.

"This offers an explanation for why some healthy people experience low mood and energy in the winter, and why there is a regular reoccurrence of depressive episodes in fall and winter in some vulnerable individuals," Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, a researcher on the study, said in a statement. "The next steps will be to understand what causes this change and how to interfere with it."

Winter is also a stressful time of year for many North Americans, because of the holidays and the increased spending, travel time and busy social schedules that often go along with them. But the symptoms of SAD go beyond simple winter blues or holiday stress, Swanljung said. They are similar to those of clinical depression and include tiredness, increased appetite and weight gain, loss of interest in usual activities and low energy. Symptoms like those shouldn't be written off, he said, and if they include self-harm and suicidal feelings or attempts, they should be brought to the attention of a health professional as soon as possible.

SAD may not be as profound as other forms of depression, experts say, but it still warrants attention and treatment. "People need to understand that seasonal affective disorder is a real condition," Robin Monson-Dupuis of Aurora Behavioral Health in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, said in an email response. People in northern climates, where winters are particularly harsh, may think that negative feelings during that time of year are just a consequence of their location, Monson-Dupuis said, but if they affect your day-to-day functioning then they require investigation.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available for SAD. Light therapy, where patients sit in front of a very bright lamp or light box, is an option that many people have found helpful, Swanljung said. Though a prescription is not required to buy the equipment, it's worthwhile to talk to your health professional about it, he advised. Talk therapy can also be beneficial, as can simply keeping up with your contacts and avoiding social isolation. Exercise has been shown to help relieve depression, he said. Medication may be prescribed for more serious cases.

Paying attention to your mood and watching for patterns is a way to prevent seasonal depression from negatively affecting your life, Swanljung said. If it has been a problem for you in the past, beginning light therapy or medication ahead of time can help stave it off or reduce its severity.

S.A.D in the Summer?

(Reverse) Seasonal Affective Disorder. The sun makes me tired, sensitive to light, induces headaches, and all and all makes me want to be in a cooler, shadier place. I used to have very bad skin, (still do to an extent), and have always been prone to easy sunburns/face very red. Basically my depression just seems to get much worse when the sun comes out, which is a shame. I live in Southern California, so, any natural remedies or ideas for this?

I have a similar problem, but not SAD. When the sun is affecting my mental state and my physical health negatively, I just let myself stay inside most of the time. I try opening the windows here and there at least. Sometimes I'm able to go on an outing with family or friends, where they are distracting me and we're doing activities and such that make me feel better. Having people you care about around always helps someone get through these difficult situations.

Who all is treating their disorder the natural way, no meds?

I am diagnosed schizo-affective with severe anxiety and have tried lots of meds and finally decided to stop them. Im living a very happy life dealing with the things on my own and being spiritual with my God. i've found this is all the help i need, and with the guidance of my guardian i can live a happy successful life. Thus said, i have made my first plan and am sticking to it, something very hard to do with my bipolar manic phases. im going to join the Air Force next year as it will be one year i have been off my medications.

I did it the "natural" way, I used weed to self medicate, and when I stopped, I relapsed, really BADLY.

It depends on the severity of the disorder. If its manageable, I think people don't even notice they have the disorder, thus never get medicated.

If it is moderate, then some people try to do it the natural way, but it comes back to haunt them eventually, but sometimes it might never show itself again, as long as the triggers are being managed too.

If its serious, I don't think anyone should/anyone does not take medicine. Most people that don't take medicine with a serious form of a disorder end up living pretty messed up lives.

So either your disorder is really mild(which doesn't sound like it) or you might feel normal/able to handle you problems alone, but you might relapse into a bad episode sooner or later.

Schizo-affective disorder is partly(not sure if fully) a biological disorder with psychological effects. So there is no way to tell if you might get hit with a bad episode, but since its biological, something could eventually trigger it.

Also, I didn't know you could be allowed to enter the Air Force with a bipolar disorder/schizo-affective disorder. That's pretty cool.

I really need help i am very sick?

I dont know what to do i am 24 years old and live in Missouri. I have endometreosis, ulcerative colitis, chrons, and severe anxiety, and no insurance. I have applied for ssi and medicaid and have been denied for both, they told me my only shot at medicaid was to get pregnant, and I cant have children. As I sit here I am scared and in pain, and at a total loss for what to do. I never was depressed before but sometime I think it would be easier just to be dead. I cant work, so I cant afford a doctor, and Ive been to the er a million times and they cant help me, untill i am dying i guess. I feel very lost, and I am very sick and do not know what to do.
I am married and my husband is in jail, and my family is very poor. they won't give me medicaid without disibility benefits or children.
I have even tried all the churches in my area, and talked to me like I was dumb for calling them.
That will take a long time, in the mean time i am getting worse

It sounds like you would qualify for state disability with the diagnosis you listed. Don't walk away from SS after one denial. In some states there are programs that offer free or very inexpensive insurance. In CA, the program is called Healthy families. I am not familiar with Missouri, but you might contact your local health department for information. Hospitals usually have information, as well. Since you have online access, I recommend searching for support groups for people with your same diagnosis. It will be a good start to finding some help.

Your situation is very sad, but you can find help. Keep asking and it will come. There are amazing resources available and varius charitable organizations that will help you. If you were in CA, I would know exactly where to send you. Check the places I stated. It will be a good start. Don't give up!

Fibromyalgia sufferers - are You Fed Up?

Well, I'm tired of it! I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome in 1995, just when some doctors were beginning to recognize is as a "real" syndrome/chronic disorder. Many were still uninformed or didn't care and believe it or not, there are many professionals out there who STILL don't recognize it for what it is! I actually had my son's therapist tell me that he could cure me of it because it was more psychological than physiological! Needless to say, my son is seeing a new therapist!

I have spent the last 5 or 6 years educating myself about FMS from, symptoms, natural remedies, physical therapy, myofascial release therapy, medications and case studies. Yes, I tried many of them myself - some with great results, some with almost deadly results.

Most "Fibromytes" know the symptoms and have already been through the gauntlet of medications and therapies, and though I will address them in another article, I won't go into that right now. I am more concerned about how you are feeling emotionally and mentally. Yes, the pain can lead to depression and depression increases your pain and anxiety disorders soon follow in many cases, and that's something we have to take control of. Medications do help and I would never recommend not following your doctor's advice - NEVER, but there are other things you can do to help yourself and overtime, maybe get rid of some of those drugs or find the one's that work best for you!

The reactions of those around you to your FM can greatly affect the way you feel. There is nothing more demoralizing than having someone treat you like you are a big baby, a drama seeker, or even worse, an attention monger or narcotic seeker. I was embarrassed to tell people I had FM because I knew what their reaction was going to be. Some people even lose friends over it! Ridiculous! They need a wake up call!

You are not crazy, delusional, attention starved or an addict - you're a HUMAN BEING IN PAIN. I met one of the best P.A.'s I've ever known when I moved to San Antonio and one day, while I was crying in her office because of all the meds I was on and feeling like a hypochondriac, she told me, "Look, you are a woman in pain. Real pain. And you need these medications in order to have any quality of life, so you need to accept it and get over it!" She changed my whole way of thinking.

I'd been through the ringer with bad doctors who patronized me or filled me with drugs without checking for interactions and rushed me out the door! I went through a period of deep depression and couldn't get out of bed. This went on for two years! I ended up with Serotonin Syndrome because a doctor who prescribed new meds over the phone gave me THREE Serotonin affecting drugs at once, on top of all my other meds (about 10 at the time). Serotonin Syndrome can kill you! Always check your meds online, with your pharmacist AND your doctor. Don't rely on the two of them to put 2 and 2 together! Ask lots of questions! That's what they're getting paid for! Don't let them rush you out the door feeling more hopeless and confused than when you walked in!

It's my goal to help educate people with FM, their friends and loved ones, coworkers - I guess everyone I can! Let's face it, those around us really don't get it and most never will! I want to at least arm you with the power to be more in control of your treatment, your emotional health and overall well-being. This article is just the beginning!

I have high anxiety and need to calm myself down and anxiety meds aren't enough, how can I avoid caffeine completely, can you make a list of foods that contain even the slightest amounts of caffeine? thanks

This is by no means a comprehensive list but since I saw this I thought I might give it a shot for you.

Chocolate of nearly any sort
Coffee (even decaf has trace amounts)
Caffeinated soda (caffeine is added to soda separately so caffeine free should be safe)
Some types of medication (Excedrine, Midol, and Triaminecin amongst others)

I know that dealing with anxiety can be tough; it disrupts even the smallest parts of your life. I am not caffeine sensitive but have dealt with varying degrees of issues over the years including OCD. It's no fun at all. Good luck getting things under control.

Anxiety: 5 No-Holds-Barred Techniques To Wiping It Out

We all get nervous at some point in our lives, but when it begins to take over our lives and affect daily activities, sleep and our overall health, it is time to take some action. "Me" Time
Set aside some moments where you can just be alone and have some quiet time all to yourself. It will be good to be away from some distractions, and just enjoy your own company. But the most important thing with taking time for yourself is to be able to truly relax and put your feet up once in awhile.

Aromatherapy
You know how you feel when you inhale particular smells. They can be really bad, or really good. The good scents have the power to make you feel much better, because they signal a certain reaction or memory within the brain. This will certainly help you to feel a sense of peace and calm, and will help make your anxiety a thing of the past.

Following this advice, while it will not rid you completely from anxiety, will certainly help you work through your problems. Tackle those anxious feelings head on and work toward a more relaxed you. Home is where the heart is, and there is no need to feel anxiety within those walls. Take a breath or two, and begin sorting through all of those negative feelings. where do i find a therapist/councilor?

i suffer with depression and anxiety been on pills dont like been to a therapist(from my doctor)was on a waiting list for months i was in for 20 mins and i didnt think she was very good at all ,she just took personal details and didnt talk much about why i was feeling this way resulting in nothing basically.is there anywhere else i can go,that is free? i live in scotland thanks

What you're describing with the therapist sounds like an INTAKE SESSION. Those are important! A good counselor will start out by getting a thorough personal/medical history before the actual counseling begins. (For example, if a person has recently stopped taking a prescription medication and begins to feel depressed, the counselor will check right away to find out if the feelings could be related to the medication. That way, you're not paying for counseling sessions when you really need a medical appointment instead!)

The thing about counselors is that it takes a little time to open up. Counselors look for a 'base line' in your life - how much (on average) energy you have, what your mood is, etc. - so that they can help you monitor the ups and downs of your depression and anxiety.

Receiving counseling is hard! You can't just walk in and spend an hour with a stranger, and walk out "fixed." You have to invest time and energy, and the first few meetings are usually the hardest. Just like you said, you might not start talking about what's 'wrong' right away, but that doesn't mean the counselor is wasting time.

If I were you, I'd go back and give the therapist another try - make a committment to go three or four times, and I'll bet you see the difference. Or, if you'd rather, pick a new one (but be aware that you'll go through the same thing again... routine questions that can be very personal but probably not all that 'emotional'). It's part of the method, and it really pays off in the long run!

I have suffered off and on for about 2 years and it is getting to be debilitating.
I've tried Lexapro, Paxil and nothing seems to work. Did you have any success w/a particular antidepressent?

Exercise

If your Doctor tells you you're fit enough to perform aerobic exercises, it couldn't hurt to add it to your weekly routine. There is a lot of good exercise can do and a lot of this good is the feeling of well being it brings to those who do it. Of course, it is recommended you start slowly.

Some people are unable to get out and go for a long walk because they are too anxious. For these people it is recommended they start with some exercise program they can do in the home such as following along with a tape or DVD.

In the long run, exercise can prove to be very instrumental in the healing process of one who is recovering from anxiety but it is not in itself a cure. It can promote a feeling of well being, but it does nothing to cut off anxiety at its root.

Relaxation

Performing relaxation techniques such as "Progressive Relaxation" can certainly help overcome feelings of anxiety, at least on a temporary basis. However, after continued use of relaxation, the reprieve from constant anxiety will help give you a solid ground from which the anxious condition may become less severe.

After a couple weeks of using such techniques, anxiety sufferers are able to recall the relaxed feelings the practicing of relaxation brought about and perhaps this will quell an anxiety attack. Doing so, will break the cycle of fear-adrenaline-fear and create a stepping-stone to a complete recovery.

Knowledge is King

After you become familiar with how the nervous system works and you become wise to the fact it is adrenaline, which is bringing on the scary feelings you have been experiencing, a cure can take place. Nervousness is a normal human reaction to outside stimuli, but if it is occurring on a regular basis and it is misunderstood, it can eventually lead to extreme nervousness complete with panic and all the other goodies anxiety is known for.

The ability to relax is helpful, and together with the knowledge of how your nervous system works anxiety can be defeated.

The cure comes in unmasking adrenaline's dirty work. Overcoming anxiety in this manner is as natural a process as there is. It is more natural than even herbs. However, it is a process that has to be learned. The good news is this cure has been achieved on countless occasions. Is the anti-depressant Zoloft addicting?

i got perscribed zoloft for some post partum depression and im wondering if i should take them or not. are they addictive? will i be extremely depressed when i get off them? is there any bad side effects i should know? my dr. said its safe but personally im not too sure about anti-depressants , i asked my dr. if this would just be temporary and he said "maybe" which makes me uneasy.

My answer to you comes out of my own experience, and from my heart, to any new mom experiencing depression. Truly I do not mean to scare you. I do, however want to communicate about a potentially serious condition with even more serious consequences. It isn't fun to talk about. But you really do need to know.

Post partum depression is a serious condition with potentially deadly consequences (You've heard of the mothers who kill their newborns? - that's the one) .........So, it is absolutely necessary to get yourself treated. (I've been there - that's why I know) It is so important that you do not delay getting onto medication by even a day. Postpartum depression can have milder times, but the intensity of it can come up rapidly and intensely, overwhelming your thoughts and feelings and actions. Something that would seem unreasonable to you on a normal day, can look and feel like the only way out on a day of postpartum depression. Your thinking and reasoning can, in a matter or minutes or hours become way outside of reality.

I take Zoloft. This medication has been a godsend. My ability to think and reason and figure things out has returned.

Antidepressants work differently from other drugs, so far as addiction. Zoloft is not addictive. Infact you have to make yourself remember to take it. The reason you take it is because your body and your hormones have thrown you a curve-ball. You are lacking chemicals in your brain at this time. The lack causes the depression (difficulty functioning, and down mood, and change in thought patterns, loss of hope and perspective of a future) Zoloft is used to "kick-start" your body into making these missing chemicals -- much as using "starting fluid" will help to get a stubborn car started. Once started functioning for a number of months, most people can slowly end their use of Zoloft. Only a few of us who have had serious (other reasons we don't function) defincency that we are incapable of maintaining a normal brain chemical function.....and we need longterm replacement therapy.

So, when you asked your Dr. if this would just be temproary --- this is why he answered "maybe". Because in most people it is a temporary situation that can be changed by use of the medication. (I'm just not one of those people)

Will you be extremely depressed when you get off of them?
Assuming you are like most people, who's healthy function can be re-started by the medication, and you stay on it a long enough time to re-establish your own functioning - and you taper off rather than stop suddenly (Always under Drs approval and supervision) chances are you will not return to depression - and your brain chemicals will remain at normal levels on their own.

Any bad side-effects? Of all the medications I have tried, Zoloft is just about free of side-effects for me. I just have to take a nap each day.

Before starting on antidepressants - I held a personal belief that depression could be overcome by "thinking my way out". But I was uninformed as to the REASON for my depression.
It was far more dangerous for myself and my babies for me to be unmedicated. 3 of my 5 I was seriously dealing with postpartum depression. I'm just fortunate we're all still alive.
I just want to warn you other new moms of the potential dangers of NOT getting medication.

The antidepressants will help you to think and reason and to not experience the depth of how low you can feel. It helps to even out the holes in the emotional and mental road of life, so you don't fall so deep. Antidepressants like Zoloft work like a safety net for the trapeeze artist. You don't hit so deep or so hard. And they keep you safe. -- Your precious baby too.

For any mom who is deeply depressed and is experiencing fears of harming her children - place your baby in their bed, or in the arms of a neighbor - and walk out the door of your home. Received the help you need at the hospital. You will heal. And everyone will still be safe. Let yourself get the help of the antidepressant your body is not making right now. Do it out of love for your child. When you are stable, you can return to being a loving and caring mom - likely to never again be so ill as to think of harm. Antidepressant medications do work and help in a helpless situation. They provide the ability to hope.
