Can anxiety cause depression and vice versa?

I have anxiety problems, but I get depressed sometimes on and off. Just wondered if the two are linked? I made my doctor make me a referral to a psychiatrist, but I don't know if it's going to do anything for me or I believe it won't. These SSRIs have milder forms of side effects than that of the usual anti anxiety drugs, and there is also less chance of becoming dependent upon these drugs. The main drawback to SSRIs is that you must take them continuously for up to three to five weeks before any sign of improvement begins to show.

While there are known and reported side effects from the continued use of Benzodiazepines and Buspirones, people suffering from milder complaints can use these anti anxiety drugs without becoming overly addicted to them. Benzodiazepines can be given at least 30 to 60 minutes before a person suffering from anxiety is exposed to any stressful situations. Buspirones take at least 2 to 3 weeks before an improvement can be seen.

You should also be aware of the side effects that some of these anti anxiety drugs can have on you, especially if you suffer from certain medical conditions or suffer from allergic reactions to certain drugs, or are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or you're a breast feeding mother. As with all drugs and treatments you should always consult with your doctor prior to taking any medication. It is hopeful that talking with your doctor will provide you with the information necessary to help reduce and cure your anxiety successfully.

Treatments and drugs
Social anxiety disorder typically persists for life, often waxing and waning. But don’t lose hope. Treatment can help you control symptoms and become more confident and relaxed in social situations.
The two most effective types of treatment are medications and a form of psychotherapy called cognitive behavior therapy. For the greatest effectiveness, they’re often used in combination.
Psychotherapy
Cognitive behavior therapy is the only type of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating social anxiety disorder. This type of therapy is based on the idea that your own thoughts — not other people or situations — determine how you behave or react. Even if an unwanted situation won’t change — you still have to give a presentation to management, for instance — you can change the way you think and behave in a positive way. In therapy, you learn how to recognize and change negative thoughts about yourself.
Cognitive behavior therapy may also include exposure therapy. In this type of therapy, you gradually work up to facing the situations you fear most. This allows you to become better skilled at coping with these anxiety-inducing situations and to develop the confidence to face them. You may also participate in skills training or role-playing to practice your social skills and gain comfort and confidence relating to others. You may also learn relaxation or stress management techniques.
First choices in medications
several types of medications are used to treat social anxiety disorder. However, the Food and Drug Administration has specifically approved only three medications, all antidepressants, to treat social anxiety disorder.
Those antidepressants are:
ï‚§Paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR)
ï‚§Sertraline (Zoloft)
ï‚§Venlafaxine (Effexor)
Other medication options
Your doctor or mental health provider may also prescribe other medications that haven’t been specifically approved for social anxiety disorder. This is a common and legal practice called off-label use. These medications may include:
ï‚§Other antidepressants. You may have to try several different antidepressants to find which one is the most effective and has the fewest unpleasant side effects.
Anti-anxiety medications. A type of anti-anxiety medication called benzodiazepines (ben-zo-di-AZ-uh-penes) may reduce your level of anxiety. Although they often work quickly, they can be habit-forming. Because of that, they’re often prescribed for only short-term use. They may also be sedating.
Beta blockers. These medications work by blocking the stimulating effect of epinephrine (adrenaline). They may reduce heart rate, blood pressure, pounding of the heart, and shaking voice and limbs. Because of that, they may work best when used infrequently to control symptoms for a particular situation, such as giving a speech. They’re not recommended for general treatment of social anxiety disorder.
Stick with it
Don’t give up if treatment doesn’t work quickly. You can continue to make strides in therapy over several weeks or months. And remember that finding the right medication for your situation can take some trial and error.
For some people, the symptoms of social anxiety disorder may fade over time, and medication can be discontinued. Others may need to take medication for years to prevent a relapse
Ways to Make Treatment More Effective
Many people with anxiety disorders benefit from joining a self-help or support group and sharing their problems and achievements with others. Internet chat rooms can also be useful in this regard, but any advice received over the Internet should be used with caution, as Internet acquaintances have usually never seen each other and false identities are common. Talking with a trusted friend or member of the clergy can also provide support, but it is not a substitute for care from a mental health professional.
Stress management techniques and meditation can help people with anxiety disorders calm themselves and may enhance the effects of therapy. There is preliminary evidence that aerobic exercise may have a calming effect. Since caffeine, certain illicit drugs, and even some over-the-counter cold medications can aggravate the symptoms of anxiety disorders, they should be avoided. Check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any additional medications.
The family is very important in the recovery of a person with an anxiety disorder. Ideally, the family should be supportive but not help perpetuate their loved one’s symptoms. Family members should not trivialize the disorder or demand improvement without treatment. If your family is doing either of these things, you may want to show them this booklet so they can become educated allies and help you succeed in therapy

Treatments for Social Anxiety Disorder ?

I just started seeing a therapist because I was tired of feeling depressed all the time but after a few time talking to her it turns out I Social Aniexty Disorder following depression. I was suprised to find out that I had this but talking to my therapist and doing a little research on it I found out that I really do have this. So back to my question. My therapist asked me to do a little homework and told me to look up treatments for this disorder. Can anyone with this problem tell me what kind of treatments they used ? Also, I would like to hear about your experiances with this disorder as well if you choose to share.

I don't believe in taking medicine. Not to say that you shouldn't, if that's what you want to do then go for it. I just have issues with meds. I don't like the way they make me feel.

I have social anxiety but I don't take medicine for it. I actually almost fainted once just because I was talking to my uncle. My Uncle!! Ha ha. At the time I didn't know what was wrong with me, but I did go to a psychologist when I started to figure out that that was the problem. But he didn't really help.

Pretty much I just force myself into social situations now. And if it's really stressful, I wont do it without someone going with me. I'm getting better about doing stuff by myself though. Like I said, I just force myself to go, sit quietly and listen to the conversation until my nerves die down a bit, and then eventually I'll get into the conversation. I've found that the reason I am anxious about social situations is becuase I have a nack for saying the wrong thing. So I'm just quiet.

Most of the time I smoke a lot if I'm nervous about something, and I used to just drink a lot because liquor is "liquid courage." But, don't start smoking just because you're nervous. And, I found out that drinking doesn't make you less socially awkward, it just makes you look like an idiot in front of a bunch of people. Which is worse. So I don't drink so much anymore.

Advice I can give: Just force yourself to do it. I know it's hard, but make yourself do it anyway. I tell myself that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and if I pass it up just because I am nervous, I'm never going to get anywhere in life.

When you get to the situation, just observe for a while until you become more comfortable. Then you'll see that it's not as bad as you thought it was in the first place, and it wont be as hard.

If you want to try meds, and you think they will help, go for it.

An Overview Of The Different Categories Of Anxiety Depression

Anxiety depression is a serious mental illness that affects millions of people everyday. People who experience an anxiety disorder have lives that are filled with overwhelming anxiety and fear.

Brief anxiety can be caused by a stressful event such as doing business presentations, having a first date, or giving an important speech. This depression, however, is chronic and will get progressively worse if left untreated.

Many different kinds of anxiety depression exist, and each one can cause irrational fear and dread in a person.

One form of such depression that affects roughly 2.4 million adults every day is the panic disorder. A panic disorder is when an individual experiences feelings of terror that attack suddenly and repeatedly with no warning.

A person can experience physical sensations such as an increased heart rate and the body may break out into a sweat. A panic disorder is one of the most treatable forms of anxiety that a person can have.

With the right medications and planned psychotherapy, an individual can lead a normal life without the fear of having a panic attack.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a form of anxiety depression that can be very simple or can go to extremes. With OCD as many people call it, a person has continuous obsessions that can be disturbing thoughts or behaviors.

In order to cope with these obsessions, an individual must do certain rituals called compulsions. Pleasure is not derived from doing these rituals. However, people receive relief to the anxiety that will turn into a monster if the rituals are not done.

This is one of the anxiety depression categories that can be treated with medication if it is beginning to take over a person's life, but so many people fail to realize that they have a mental illness with OCD.

No matter what type of anxiety depression a person is experiencing, treatment is available. With both the panic disorder and the obsessive compulsive disorder, carefully planned psychotherapy and medication can ease the worries that plague the person experiencing these life altering disorders.

Anxiety and depression together are a hard matter to deal will. fears and rituals can ruin a person's life. This depression is, however, a treatable condition if a person will just accept what is happening and not shrug it off. Human suffering due to any form of depression is really unnecessary.

Help is available for those who desire to make their lives more manageable. If a person who is sick will not get help, then the family or friends need to take over.

Is it easy to do this?

I have depression and general anxiety disorder. I was formally diagnosed in high school and got a pet to help keep the symptoms away. Well it worked and I was symptom free for years. I recently moved and had to get rid of my dog because there were no pet friendly apartments in the area I moved to. I know that some doctors will give notes saying that a pet is part of therapy and the apartment has to allow this. I need to know how easy it would be to get a doctor to give me a note for this as I do not have insurance and do not qualify for any free or reduced price services. I cannot find the doctor I talked to in high school because he has retired since then. I need this pet and a note is my only option so do not suggest that I move or try other treatments. I cannot afford therapy and cannot handle the medications used to treat these illnesses. Please be nice and answer my question only if you are going to be helpful.

Another idea is that your local animal shelter may have some suggestions about a doctor that could help you, and you may be able to volunteer at the shelter!
