The term depression is often used to refer to any of the many depressive disorders. The exact causes of these conditions are unknown but probable causes include heredity, changes in neurotransmitter levels, altered neuroendocrine function as well as changes in psychosocial factors. Depression is a mental disorder that is characterized by a negative sense of inadequacy and altered moods. It is a state of mind in which you experience sad feelings of gloom and pessimistic thinking. You will also have a low self-esteem as well as low self-reproach. When you are depressed, you feel down, low and hopeless. This condition can occur at any age but normally it develops in the mid teens, 20s or 30s.

There are several depressive disorders. Major depression normally makes you uninterested in activities that you previously enjoyed. It can lead to loss of appetite and weight. It will make you feel hopeless. Atypical depression is when you sometimes experience happiness and moments of elation. Other symptoms are oversleeping, fatigue, weight gain and overreacting to issues. When you have this disorder, you will be under the believe that outside events control your moods.

Psychotic depression is when you start to hear and see imaginary things. These things may include sounds, voices and visuals that are nonexistent. You will start imagining and frightening and negative images. These are also referred to as hallucinations which are normally common with persons suffering from schizophrenia.

Dysthymia is another depressive disorder. It is when you go through life feeling unimportant and dissatisfied. You will always be sad and frightened. Manic or bipolar disorder is characterized by altered mood swings ranging from depression to mania. People who suffer from this condition have an extremely high rate of committing suicide.

How can I help my family understand severe depression.?

I have been dealing with depression as far back as I can remember upon doing some research I have realized that there were signs of my depression in my behavior as far back as elementary school. I am now 27 and have a diagnosis of severe depression and anxiety disorder.
I have tried talking to my family about the problems I am having and some are more understanding than others. My mother however seems to have a different opinion about what is wrong with me and why. When I start to tell her about my depression she acts as if she thinks it is just an excuse and mentions her own feelings about not wanting to do a lot of the things she does. Her not understanding is really causing a problem with our relationship. Can anyone offer any advice on how I can help her understand my illness?

Hey, i am suffering like u r, and i know wot its like when ur family don't understand. i have the same problem with ma sister and ma dad and the rest of ma family. My mum tries to understand bt like ur mum, ma dad and sister see it as an excuse for me not to do anything. my advice to u is see ur doctor and get him to admit u to a physictist(pardon the spelling) that clarifies ur depression then show or tell ur mother the situation explain to her that the doctors wouldn't have admitted u for no reason

if she fails to understand and her attitude is the same i suggest (bt don't take ma word for it) become estranged from ur family, like i have, i moved out and i hardly speak to ma sister and i do not listen to ma dad. Make sure u move in with sumone though, or u have close contact with sumone who will support u and believe u through it.

it isn't easy honey, bt knowing that someone, if it be just one person is on ur side, it's better then nothing.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment Can Make All The Difference

Being bipolar and living with the illness means that you should have a bipolar disorder treatment plan in place. This usually begins to be formed from the time that a diagnosis of bipolar disorder is made. Often the bipolar disorder treatment is split into two types – one for treating manic episodes and one for treating depressive episodes. It is essential that this happens so that the person with bipolar disorder is getting the correct bipolar disorder treatment.
During a manic episode the bipolar disorder treatment will start with the elimination of any substances that might could the sufferer harm – many will turn to stimulant drugs so they should be removed as they can further alter the mood. Next an assessment should be made to determine whether the best form of bipolar disorder treatment is to hospitalise the sufferer. In particularly extreme manic episodes this can happen to prevent the sufferer from coming to any harm.
Then mood stabilising drugs need to be administered as the next phase in the bipolar disorder treatment. Lithium tends to be used at this stage as it is can be a highly effective mood stabiliser. If after a week or so the bipolar sufferer will then be given antipsychotic drugs which should help to stabilise the moods. After this stage of bipolar disorder treatment additional drugs may be prescribed along with any therapy that might be needed. By this point the bipolar sufferer should be quite stable and able to continue with their daily life as usual.
During a depressive episode the bipolar disorder treatment is quite similar with lamotrigine or lithium being given to the sufferer initially. If they fail to respond to these many doctors have the opinion that they will have to cope with the depressive episode for as long as it lasts. Strangely antidepressants are not normally included in bipolar disorder treatment plan for depressive episodes as they don’t tend to work very well.
Once the bipolar disorder treatment is underway the next step could be to begin cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) so that the sufferer can start to recognise what triggers their bipolar disorder and learn ways to avoid these triggers. Therapy of this form can be hugely successful if the sufferer is willing to try this type of bipolar disorder treatment. By being able to manage their different moods a bipolar sufferer is helping to reduce the number and severity of depressive and manic episodes. Alternative bipolar disorder treatments are also quite popular with yoga and meditation being two of the most widely used by sufferers around the world.
Although there is no known cure for bipolar disorder there are a number of ways that bipolar disorder treatment can help sufferers and there is constant research into finding more ways. It may seem as though there is nothing that can be done for someone who is bipolar but as you can see there are several options that sufferers can try to find which is the best bipolar disorder treatment for them.

Whats the best treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder?

I live in an area wereby resources are low and therefore get the feeling the treatment I am recieving is just not ideal for my kind of disorder and more suited to depression and anxiety patients who would otherwise be reclusive and housebound which I am not.
I have been attending a day hospital pshychiatric unit for five months, 4 days a week and once a week psychology counciling. The councelling is good but the rest I find dimeening and barely stretches the brain beyond kindergarten levels! It tends to be activities which are supposed to be 'distraction', but I somehow do not find it all direct /intensive enough.
I was on medication but can no longer take as I am pregnant.
I am desperate for recovery!

To tell you the truth, most Day Treatment programs are a colossal waste of time and amount to little more than babysitting. CBT and specifically DBT are the most effective treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder according to the research, however I have found a psychodynamic orientation which borrows heavily from CBT and DBT to be the most effective therapy. DBT is often taught in a group and if there is a DBT group in your Day Program that is worth attending. If you live in either Michigan, Texas or California or can affors admission to the Day program at either location that is specifically designed for trauma related illnesses you would be well advised to do so.
Forestview Hospital is the one in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Charter Oaks is the one in Dallas, Texas. The other is in Del Amo, California and i believe that is Charter Oaks as well. They are all supervised by Colin Ross and offer exceedingly good programming and expertly trained therapists.
Don't waste your time in a day program that offers little in the way of real therapy unless you are extremely self-destructive and your behavior may endanger your pregnancy or unless you are very prone to repetitive crises and need the daily sup[port a therapist can offer at a day program. Seek volunteer work instead and use your therapy sessions to process the interpersonal issues that arise there as the work will be more meaningful to you and you'll have the chance to interact with healthier individuals which in itself will give you more opportunity to grow.

A surprising number of people suffer from mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, but a lot of people don't seek help. They either don't realize that they're depressed, think that others will look down on them if they admit their depression, or they simply can't manage to get help because of the symptoms they're suffering. There are a number of causes for depression, which can be caused by stressful situations, major traumatic events, chemical imbalances in the brain, or other problems. It may be related to genetic makeup, since people who are depressed also tend to have family members who are depressed, even if these people are not in contact. No matter what its cause, depression causes significant emotional pain and is a disruption to many people's lives. It affects their friends and family, makes them less productive at work and more likely to call in sick or even lose their jobs, and it can cause many other problems, as well.

To be listed as someone suffering from major depressive disorder, at least five symptoms from the following list have to have been present during a two week period. They must represent a change from earlier functioning. People with fewer symptoms or those who haven't had a change may still be depressed or suffering from a mood disorder, but that disorder will be classed differently. Possible symptoms include a depressed mood, lack of pleasure and interested in activities formerly enjoyed, a significant change in appetite or weight, greatly increased or decreased sleep, excess guilt or feelings of low worth, trouble concentrating and thinking, and recurrent thoughts about death.

Almost anyone can suffer from depression, and most people who are diagnosed with this problem are treated successfully. Major depressive disorder may come from just one trauma, or from a series of disappointments, problems, or stresses. Some people only go through one major depressive episode in their lives. Others will deal with many episodes. This illness is not selective and affects people of all ages, races, and other descriptors. About three percent of people in the US and Europe are depressed at any one time, rising to seven percent over the course of a year. Between ten and fifteen percent of us will suffer from a major depressive episode at some time in our lives.

Treating major depression can be done in a number of different ways, of which medication is only one, though many people aren't aware of other options. Psychotherapy, behavioral and cognitive therapy, herbal treatments, and many other methods can also be used to improve symptoms and make the sufferer's life easier. If you believe you're dealing with major depressive disorder, it's important to take control and seek help. There are lots of options, and something is likely to be of help to you.

Can a person with bipolar disorder/manic depression get disability?

I filed for disability in march..with diagnosis of panic disorder, severe depression, diastolic dysfunction, diabetes..was turned down! filed for reconsideration and was diagnosed with Bipolar/manic depression. I do not go anywhere. I will drive but as far as goin in place i dont go. I havent been in a store, resturant, etc since dec 2008. I stay home and wont even go to my friends or families homes. Im afraid of havin a severe panic attacks. Those do not feel good. I try to avoid them as much as possible. I have had plenty in my sleep. can someone help me?

I understand your panic disorder. I haven't been able to travel for years because of the horror of panic disorder. You are really bad and you need to get disability. You may have to get some help, since you are not hardly able to leave your home, because this might have to be taken before a Judge in a court of law. I know a lady that has been getting disability for panic disorders for years. She can go around town and just drive a little bit from home. She has been right around her home since 1980. Can't take vacations. I am fortunate that I have been able to work, but I have had to take jobs below me because of my disability. I have a personality disorder and can't hardly stand being with people along with panic attacks and constantly being smothered because I have a fear of the sky.. They bother me so bad that I stay to myself most of the time. So I have to work alone, and sometimes I can barely do that. So I do know what you feel and how restricted you are in what you can or can't do. People who have never suffered with this phobia can not possibly have even an idea. I wish I was normal and could take a trip somewhere. Don't give up on the disability that you so deserve.

Millions of Americans every year suffer from depression. Millions more suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. Studies have shown that the two disorders coexist more often than not. Between 60 and 70% of all people who suffer from clinical depression also suffer from anxiety.

About half of all people diagnosed with this disorders also suffer from depression. Depression and anxiety overlap so much that increasingly, clinical psychologists and researchers see anxiety and depression as facets of the same illness.

Most people have feelings of sadness at some point in their lives. The loss of a job, death of a loved one, or other disappointments, causes many of the symptoms of depression. Similarly, most people experience the latter at some point in their lives when confronted with stressful situations. These feelings are normal, up to a point.

When feelings of overwhelming sadness or hopelessness, accompanied by fatigue, and changes of appetite and sleep patterns persist for more than a few weeks, the person may be diagnosed with clinical depression. When feelings of anxiety are out of proportion to the stresses being experienced, or a person has panic attacks several times over a period of weeks, they may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety and depression are so often intertwined that one must be treated before the other can be dealt with.

Just as there is a lot of overlap between depression and anxiety, there is also a lot of overlap in treatment for the two disorders. Anxiety disorders are often treated with antidepressant medications. Some forms of psychotherapy, especially cognitive and behavioral therapy, have been very successful in treating both conditions.

At times, it may be necessary to treat the depression first. In one form of therapy, called exposure therapy, the patient is exposed to gradually increasing stress factors to help them learn to cope with anxiety. Depression can drain a person of energy and leave them unable to cooperate, so sometimes it must be dealt with first for the anxiety therapy to be effective.

Sometimes, a patient's depression must be treated before the disorder of the other condition can be dealt with. Other times, it may work the other way around. Anxiety usually presents itself at an earlier age than depression, typically during childhood or adolescence.

In these cases, successful treatment of the latter may prevent depression from developing when the patient reaches adulthood. Depression and anxiety are such frequent fellow travelers that often, successful treatment of one often includes treating the other.

Panic Attacks And Panic Disorder

A panic attack is a sudden feeling of extreme anxiety accompanied by significant physical symptoms such as trembling, sweating and shortness of breath. They are usually accompanied by an overwhelming fear of catastrophe - the person may feel they are dying or suffering a heart attack, or they may fear they are going mad. They can occur in response to specific situations (such as crowded areas) or spontaneously and with no obvious cause. They are usually short-lived (lasting a few minutes) but are so unpleasant that a person may live in fear of it happening again - in many cases, this will lead to the person avoiding situations that they think will trigger an attack ("avoidance behaviour").

Panic attacks quite commonly accompany other anxiety conditions such as generalised anxiety and specific phobias (particularly Agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces). However they can occur outwith these other conditions - a study in 1994 found that 3 people in every 100 had experienced panic attacks alone.

Panic Disorder is the term used by psychiatrists for those psychological conditions in which panic attacks predominate.

Psychological Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Intense anxiety
Fear of dying
Fear of losing control or going mad
Depersonalisation (the unpleasant feeling that you are not "real" or are detached from yourself)
Derealisation (the unpleasant feeling that your environment is "fake" or you are an "actor in a play")

Physical Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Shortness of breath or feeling "smothered"
Choking
Palpitations (feeling the heart racing or beating irregularly)
Chest pain
Sweating
Dizziness or feeling faint
Nausea or abdominal discomfort
Flushing of the skin or feeling chilled
Trembling or shaking

The feeing of being unable to breath can lead to a compensatory increase in breathing rate (hyperventilation) by the person. This in turn can affect the body adversely, leading to both a worsening of the physical symptoms above and additional symptoms:

Physical Symptoms of Hyperventilation

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Numbness or tingling sensations in the hands, feet and face
Headache
Weakness
Spasms of the hand and foot muscles

In a panic attack, people will usually experience at least 4 of the above symptoms, although most experience many more than this. For a diagnosis of Panic Disorder, the person will experience at least 4 panic attacks in a 4-week period, or experience significant fear of a further attack (and exhibit avoidance behaviour) for 4 weeks following a single episode.

Treatment

If the panic attacks are associated with other conditions such as generalised anxiety, phobia or depression, then the appropriate course of action is to address these underlying issues first - the panic attacks should subside as these other issues are resolved.

If the panic attacks are the main problem, then (as with most psychological problems) two courses of action are available - drug treatment and psychological therapies.

The drug treatment of panic attacks limited. Sedative drugs such as the Benzodiazepines (e.g. Diazepam (Valium)) are very effective in the short term, but are highly addictive and can lead to dependence. Further, when these drugs are withdrawn, a resurgence of the panic is likely. Antidepressants, particularly the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Citalopram (Cipramil) and Paroxetine (Seroxat), are licensed for use in panic disorder. They can cause an initial worsening of symptoms when first taken, and can cause other side effects such as gastro-intestinal disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Drug treatments are not as effective as psychological therapies in these conditions.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive therapy for the treatment of panic attacks and panic disorder. Their research has shown it to be more effective than any drug treatments. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (nlp) involve the patient seeing a therapist on a one-to-one basis for hour-long sessions. The total treatment course is typically between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session a week. The therapies involve an explanation of the psychological and physical symptoms of panic attacks, and may involve the deliberate precipitation of a panic attack during a session. The aim is to reduce the fear associated with the physical symptoms - this fear is often a cause of the attacks itself and the associated avoidance behaviours. Once the fear of the panic attacks is reduced, the attacks themselves will lessen in frequency and severity and, hopefully, disappear altogether.

Despite the clear recommendations by NICE, the availability of Cognitive Therapy remains limited in the NHS. If your GP or local Mental Health Trust is unable to provide the appropriate treatment for your condition, they may be able to recommend a therapist in the private sector.
