Child I'm looking after...anxiety attack?
I'm volunteering at a children's summer camp (ages 9-12)
Today a girl said she felt sick. I asked her what was wrong, and she said she was seeing black, her head and stomach hurt. She was crying and breathing heavily. We sat in the bathroom for a while, then she announced she was feeling better, and was really quiet for the rest of the class.
I personally have pretty bad anxiety, and I'm no doctor, but I think I recognized the symptoms. She felt better as soon as we were out of the room, which happens to me, and she avoided eye contact with me and everyone else, as if embarassed of what had just happened, which seems even more possible if she doesn't know what's 'wrong' with her.
Or, maybe she's just shy...again, it's not for me to judge, but I think I have enough experience with panic to know it when I see it.
Should I tell the teacher/parents? I know I have no authority or anything, but I just thought they should know before it gets worse, if it is in fact anxiety.
Help?
Ok..Allways keep a small paper bag around and let the child breath into the bag. Hyperventalation. Also with the childs index finger and thumb rub together in circular motions on both hands with the backs of the hands on the lap. Do breathing exercises..deep thru the nose the exhale through the mouth.
