How to conquer your fear of speaking

How to conquer your fear of speaking - 3 Causes and 3 choices
By Dr. Robert Portnoy

As professionals, we are often asked to give both formal and informal presentations - whether to customers, colleagues, bosses and members the council itself. Some of us are trained, easily established, and eagerly welcome or create an opportunity to inform, demonstrate, persuade, inspire and motivate. Others of us run, idolatry, and when absolutely necessary - by Squeak. And many We are scared to death, even if we can not show it. In fact, statistics show that nearly 75% of the population is afraid to talk. It is often said that when it comes of the widespread fears, the fear of speaking tops the list right up there with fear of snakes, spiders and death itself. Like Jerry Seinfeld said: "The average person at a funeral would rather be in the coffin of praise. "
While certainly common, fear of speaking can be devastating - not only for careers, but of relationships. Communication is the key bridge that links people and when it is compromised by fear, the connection is limited, threatened and break easily.
The magnitude of this fear along a continuum from normal and mild to severe and debilitating. Almost everyone feels a little nervous when going before the public or make an important presentation, even if only a few people - if they may influence the success of the speaker. And this nervousness light is easy to manage and overcome once the presentation begins - especially when the speaker is well prepared with a point and a goal. But towards the end of the continuum severe anxiety can be overwhelming and the physical manifestations can be important - including the impact on blood pressure, heart rate, muscle weakness, flushed skin, sweaty palms and more.
Much has been written about the fear of speaking. And a variety of practitioners, ranging from the so-called experts of very educated professionals, offer methods and remedies for assist stakeholders to overcome. From the perspective of all, there are three main causes - only one (or combination) that lead to the fear of speaking.
The first type of question is an anxiety disorder - leading to a phobia. A phobia is defined as an irrational, intense fear of an object or situation that poses little or no real danger. At first glance, a phobia may seem similar to a normal fear. It is the degree to which a person has determines whether this fear has become a phobia. The fear of speaking is a type of social phobia - a fear of being embarrassed in public. The key to understanding and treatment of phobia is to recognize that, although fear and anxiety can be intense and "real", there is little or no actual danger. There is nothing in the situation that can actually harm the person who experiences anxiety. There is no snake bite, no scale will fall no gun to shoot, etc. The danger is not real - only imagined. Getting out in public, for a person who is afraid of speaking is not imaginary. What is imaginary is the danger that the speaker believes is hiding in the room. There is no real danger - at least nothing that he could not be trained to handle.
The second type of cause is erroneous beliefs. The person who is afraid to speak may believe they are unable or not enough. These beliefs can often be related to situations in their past when their parents treated in a manner that makes them doubt themselves and feel powerless. For example, Imagine the impact on a young child who hears repeatedly, "What is with you? "Or" How many times have I said? "Coupled with a "crying" tone of voice, these messages can lead to beliefs that shape a child's self-esteem and the impact of their choices make when trying to cope with life's challenges. Consider the impact that the belief of "I'm not good enough" might have on a speaker as he faced a hostile audience. Certainly, fear and anxiety are understandable in light of these kinds of beliefs.
Third type of cause is jurisdiction. In many cases the difference between an average and an exceptional speaker is training. oratory, while a "gift" and an art for some, comes down to learning, experience and information for most. Learning buiild and deliver a presentation convincingly requires education, guidance and time. It is natural that the less experienced players will feel more anxious than speakers accomplished.
While these three types of cases may occur in any combination. An inexperienced speaker who has irrational fears and mistaken beliefs will have much more difficulty dealing with people that a speaker who is suffering from one of three conditions.
But there is hope. Each of these conditions causality can be changed - if not completely, at least to some extent. Is how.
Phobias can be managed by certain forms therapy and medication. An approach that has been effective for many people with a fear of speaking is called virtual reality training. Using this method, the individual is exposed to the feared situation and even in the absence of any real danger. To manage the fear of speaking, the person faces, speaks and gives presentations to a virtual audience. The trained practitioner monitors the responses of the audience using virtual specialized software. With repeated exposure, fear and anxiety decrease help the person cope with a real audience with more comfort and confidence. When erroneous beliefs are the cause, beliefs can be targeted and essentially replaced by new beliefs and healthier. This approach is based on the idea that beliefs are that - beliefs. You can not see them, you can not feel them, and you can not show them to someone else. They exist only in your head. The goal is to get them out of your head so you do not bother you more, then replacing them with healthy beliefs that are grounded in reality. This approach is now available through a self-learning DVD and has been validated as effective through research university. For more information, contact me at greatspeakers@aol.com.
