Cause of Social Anxiety Disorder and Managing It

The world we currently live in is a social one. Communications advance to promote better socialization between people. It is something unavoidable, yet can present many challenges and difficulties for us. We may try to avoid socializing as much as possible as a result. This may be due to things that may be a Cause of Social Anxiety Disorder.

 

One of the causes can actually be genetic. It can run in the family, as we may naturally shy away from social activities, gatherings, and meeting new people. This can be associated with imbalances in our anxiety response system.

 

Having excessive fears about what others may think about us can contribute to another Cause of Social Anxiety Disorder. This can range from thoughts about what people may think about our hear, clothes, voice, movement, etc... These fears can be so strong, we prefer to avoid social activities and meeting other people also as a result of being potentially embarrassed for being so nervous.

 

As we can gather from the above, going through it can result in very few, if any friends outside of family. How can we manage this?

 

It is possible that it may be just a passing phase, or a normal response to high pressure situations. Where it has been going on for awhile however, other things may need to be done. Avoiding social contact and activities can make the condition worse.

 

Although the comfort zone is relatively small, try to expand it slowly. Attend a low key social event with some family and look around and see how everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves. Be a little more active, one step at a time and simply greet people you may not have met. There does not need to be a conversation yet, although some may try and you may be surprised to find there are things in common you can talk about a little more openly.

 

By taking small steps gradually to expand this comfort zone, it will help to reduce the fears associated with Social Anxiety Disorder, gradually reverse the process over time and help manage social actions better as a result of more experience with them.

looking for good things about myself?

I'm obese, ugly as hell, antisocial (actually social anxiety disorder, but close enough), and worthless except for my intelligence.

The only thing I have is my academics. I'm not trying to be cocky, but I'm a genius. I skipped 2 grades and I'm at one of the countries most prestigious colleges and working about half as hard as everybody else and getting the same grades. I was published as lead author in a genetics journal at age 15, and found a new gene when I was 14.

Sometimes I can think about my academic accomplishments as a way to see myself as worth something, but there's only so much that that can do. I have virtually no friends, I've tried to kill myself once (it was an epic failure), and I just want some other reason that I might be worth something when I don't get any value of thinking about my academic accomplishments.

Any ideas?

You seem to be a very interesting person. I find it hard to believe that all those accomplishments would have caused you to withdraw from society and be that person that you are. If anything, it should help you find some social interaction, at least within the circle of academic professionals who share the same ideas and goals as you.

You may have a problem with your physical appearance, and that's what the internet is so good with hiding. In the internet, nobody cares how you look -- just how you think, how you write, and how you interact in words. If you steer clear of youtube and facebook, you shouldn't worry about appearances.

Interact through interesting online forums/chatrooms. Find friends this way -- or if you are scared of socializing -- find people to share ideas with. Forums are a great way to interact and debate, forming acquaintances before you know it.

I'd kill for your brains. I wish I was that smart. Instead, all I have are my artsy hands and my flair for failure. I am not good at math - and i've failed a board exam twice. I should be killing myself .. but I'm still good for something I think. :p As long as I'm helping other people, I am still worth something. Maybe you can try something along the lines of that. My mom and I started a Christmas tradition of going to hospitals and giving presents/cards to needy patients who have to stay there for Christmas. It made me feel stupid for all those times I've felt bad about my life-- here are people who are ill, needy and without nobody to care for them but are still struggling to stay alive. It's inspiring, and it makes me want to do better things than to sit and mope at how retarded I am. :)
