Effects of depression on the hippocampus?
Through the little research I have done (internet only) it seems the hippocampus decreases in size during a period of major depression. First, is this true? If this were true is there a limit to which it would shrink? And lastly, if it had shrunk is there a treatment for such a disorder?
That's interesting. The hippocampus shirnks/grows seasonally in animals that store (cache) their food for the winter. I remember learning it's involved in spatial memory.
Increasing the enrichment of the patient's environment, would reverse this, I think. If it follows the typical use it or lose it phenomenon.
