How to Help Your Man Beat Depression
In the current climate, unemployment is soaring, businesses are failing and closing, and government
economists are predicting more gloom for many months.
While many people are being made redundant across the entire spectrum of industries, a greater ratio
of men than women are finding themselves on the scrapheap.
Historically, men have been the household breadwinners. In the 21st century, the distinctive gender
roles have become a little more fuzzy, but on the whole, in a typical family, men work full time,
women work full or part time, and women still run the household and raise the children.
So when a middle aged man loses his job due to a debt ridden company going into decline, or because
he is seen as expendable, the fragile male ego can take a beating, and your man could well spiral
into mental and physical decline.
Most women would be very sympathetic at first. But men in this position tend to do very little about
looking for another job, or do next to nothing to help around the house. If a woman works full time,
and then comes home to find her partner moping in the same position she left him earlier, things
could become a little difficult.
Women need to just take a small step backwards, and look at his situation. More often than not, it
is easier said than done, but in truth, he is probably suffering from clinical depression.
The male identity is hugely connected to work, status at work, and his power within the workplace, not
to mention the kameraderie of teamwork, and the overall feeling of being part of something good.
Redundancy can take away all these good feelings and make him feel completely hopeless. Needless to
say, a full time working woman would be driven completely crazy by his poor attitude.
So the last thing to do is to moan and whine. Instead, try to set him small goals, and praise him
each time he achieves them. A calm and measured 'thank you' for completing a small task will do
wonders for his self esteem. Also, encourage him to take up a hobby, or hone a skill that he has
always wanted to have a go at. Golf is not a good idea, as it is expensive, and you would probably
never see him!
Anger with a man who is depressed is very understandable, but never a great idea. Men are usually
very poor at expressing how they feel, so he may not even recognise that he has a problem. Anger,
shouting, and confrontation will probably not even register, he will merely see you complaining at
him. Remember that your man is feeling like the world has collapsed around him. He does not want you
to baby him, or mother him - he just doesn't know that he cannot rebuild himself on his own.
In severe cases, some men find it difficult to get out of the house, as they feel intimidated by
people who still have jobs, those with better cars, and bigger houses. They may even feel totally
intimidated by their partner, being female, still working, and now earning more money than him.
In these cases, it is important to remember that your man is ill, that he needs your help and
support, and that he will never fully recover without it.

Was Herbert Hoover one of the most inept presidents America has had?
Hoover was adamant in his refusal allow the U.S. government to help the starving, the jobless and the homeless through goverment run programs because he viewed such actions as being Socialist and Communist. Did this view give the Depression a greater chokehold on America?
No. Hoover while far from perfect had bad timing on his side. In the 1920s the stock market took off in an incredible orgy of speculaion. In 1928 the economy was going gangbusters, but it was all based upon insane speculation. (Read "The Great Crash," by John Kenneth Galbraith for a good read about how unbridled speculation leads to dissaster) Government regulation, much like today, was seen as communist, socialist and denounced. Hoover was well liked and was a skilled engineer with prominent accomplishments before he became President. However, in 1929 the economy collapsed (Please note that today's economy is very similar in that we are at the end of a long speculaive orgy in housing and also, like in Hoover's time, great amounts of wealth are held by the rich and not the middle class and their are tremendous deficits and regulation has been largely repealed by succesive Republican administations).
In 1929, the economy collapsed. The collapse was inevitable due to totally unregulated, runaway capitalism and unregulated speculation. The crash was inevbitable regardless of who was in the White House. Hoover would, of course, take the fall.
The effects on the American people were devistating: joblessness, countless people saw their prized stocks become valueless, foreclosures soared, people starved. The concept of the saftey net so often denounced in Y!A had yet to be created.
The American people suffered horribly. The economic collapse went international. To make things worse prohibiion was in force and people could not even get drunk. (This did not contribute to Hoover's popularity)
Hoover's believed largely in volunteerism and opposed regulation and socialism as bad policy. He took many steps, some of them in error, to try and stave off the effects of the depression. See the article in Wikipedia--URL below:
Hoover was a lot more comptetent than Harding or Bush. Hoover could have done a much better job than he did. But he was an educated man. He just had very bad timing and did a man's work when we needed a miricle worker.
While there is much merit in hindsight that Hoover should have taken much stronger measures and provided aid to the common people who suffered horribly from the depression. Those views would have seemed incredibly radical at the time. He should have taken radical measures, but he believed in "volunterism." He attempted a lot of reforms. He was not inactive, but it would have taken very serious, radical actions to ease the sufferings of the people in the depression. We needed an FDR.
Bush, I think, will be looked upon with much less kindness than Hoover once the actions from his policies are recognized and take hold.
Hoover could have been a much better president, but he was scr*wed with the depression which he did not create. If God were President then the people would still be cursing him for the depression. What's sad is how little we seem to learn from economic and political cycles.
Let us pray we are not about to have another depression. The Republicans have led the country to economic ruin for the common people. Bush has left us with debt that was unimaginable in Hoover's day.
