Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Depression In Children

It is true. Your children can suffer from depression. Everyone should be aware that childhood depression is more than a child feeling "blue".

Blues are known to be emotions that children experience as they develop. If your child becomes sad , that don't mean he/she is suffering form depression. If your child was to persistently stay sad , or you noticed one having a disruptive behavior that interfered with their social welfare ; schoolwork; interests; or with family life, you may want to consult a professional that deals with mental health.

Always remember , that depression is a serious illness , but it can also be treated.

How can one tell if their child is depressed?

Depression in children has been know to vary with symptoms. Often depression is undiagnosed and left untreated because it is often looked at as normal emotional psychological changes that tend to happen as a child grows. Many children suffer just like an adult in that they stay sad and have a very low self esteem. You should watch for symptoms that revolve around sadness; hopelessness; and severe mood swings.

Learn the signs and symptoms of your child being depressed:

Irritability

Anger

Feeling of sadness or hopelessness, continuously.

No social interaction

Sensitive to rejection

Appetite changes

Sleep pattern changes

Vocal outburst

Crying

Finding it hard to concentrate

Feeling fatigued

Complaints of stomachaches or headaches that are resolved with treatment.

Failing to function properly when it comes to school; friends; hobbies; interests.

Worthlessness feeling

Concentration and thinking seems impaired.

Experiencing thoughts of death or suicide.

It has been found that many children don't suffer with the same symptoms. There may be different symptoms and different times and settings in which you will notice a behavior change. Often the most noticed difference occurs in social interaction. You may even notice a change in one's school work and academic performance. Appearance in a child can also be detected. Children tend to lean towards drugs or alcohol if they are over the age of twelve.

Children younger than twelve have been known to attempt suicide. This often occurs when the child becomes angry or upset. Girls are more prone to attempting suicide. Boys are actually more out to kill themselves in attempting suicide. If your child has a family history of violence or alcohol abuse ; or sexual abuse , the risk goes even higher for attempting suicide. It is important to know the depressive symptoms.

Can depression in children be prevented?

If a child comes from a family with a family history of depression , they have a greater chance of suffering from depression. Children that have parents with depression tend to suffer from their first episode of depression much earlier than children whose parents don't suffer from depression. Children with chaotic or conflicting families and teens which have abused substances such as alcohol or drugs stand a greater risk of suffering from depression.

How do you deal with depression when you have children?

I need tips. i'm very depressed I have been on meds in the past but am currently breastfeeding and may be preggers again any tips? advice? anything?

First off, you should probably find out if you're pregnant again... pregnancy hormones can totally make you feel weird, including depressed, so if you are pregnant it might be a temporary thing and go away in a little bit.

Obviously, there is counseling... you really should talk to a psychologist.

Finally, when I was pregnant I was depressed too, and the psychiatrist prescribed 10mg Prozac per day. Because it's such a low dose (adult doses normally start at 20mg/day), the risk for the baby is quite minimal (although the risk *is* highest in the first trimester, and I didn't start it until the third... you'd have to discuss with a psychiatrist (not your GP)). The psychiatrist said I could continue taking it while breastfeeding, which I did... my son seems just fine.
