Stress and anxiety often go hand-in-hand. Sometimes we feel stressed but it is a temporary emotion. When the stressor is dealt with, the emotion passes. This is when stress is a good thing as it gives us an extra push when we need it - to finish an essay on time, deal with a crisis at the office or take evasive action at a time of danger.

Stress is nature's way of helping us deal with temporary crises. Originally meant to cope with physical danger, our response to stress has not evolved to deal with the constant mental triggers that, for many people, are a fact of life. When we feel stressed, our 'fight or flight' reflex is triggered and an incredible series of events in our body is initiated.

First of all, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system releases steroid hormones such as cortisol which prepare the body for attack. Neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, are released which activate the amygdala, an area inside the brain responsible for the emotional response to the event - the emotion is usually fear or apprehension. Short term memory is suppressed so as to enable quick reactions while the long-term memory is activated to store the event in order to avoid it in the future.

heart rate and blood pressure increase and rapid breathing results in a larger intake of oxygen, which is carried around the body via a more efficient blood stream. The immune system is primed for action in case of injury; blood is rushed to the heart and muscle tissues and away from the skin and metabolic systems are shut down so energy can be used for more important actions.

Once the stressor goes away, the body resumes a more relaxed position. But what if the stressor doesn't go away? What if it is a constant phenomenon and the body is constantly in 'fight or flight' mode? In this case, the effects of chronic stress can be catastrophic. The first effect is that of anxiety, which is the emotion of stress without a stressor. It is the fear and apprehension of the future which looms large, threatening and uncontrollable. depression and anxiety disorders as well as heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure are some of the consequences if stress and anxiety are not dealt with.

Some of the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety are as follows:

•indigestion, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome

•constipation, diarrhea

•nausea

•weight gain or loss, eating disorders

What are the physical effects of anxiety and stress?

Can somebody give me a list of physical effects of anxiety and stress such as fatigue, rashes, etc. I've had rashes, dry skin, fatique, sore throats, colds, and weak joints, and more during the last 3 months, and i want to know if these are normal symptoms for people under stress and anxiety.

I would like to know the answer to this as well. I believe that i have some pretty bad anxiety problems going on right now that just feeds my paranoia about my health. I am constantly symptoms checking everything and i constantly think something is wrong with me.

i believe anxiety can bring things onto you by lowering your bodies immune response or by overstimulating certain brain channels. For me, I might feel fine right up to the time i start worrying about a particular illness - then i begin to notice itching, soreness, stiffness and aches - all of which i connect and attribute to this one problem that I may be experiencing.

May i take a leap of faith an assume you are paranoid about an STD, maybe HIV? your 'symptoms' sound similiar to mine, and that is what i constantly worry about.

Just take note next time of when the symptoms begin occuring, you will probably realise that they begin when you start worrying and fade when you dont think about them.

Remember - most of the time you have nothing seriously wrong with you and you ahve nothing to worry about. Try to break up your symptoms and attribute them to the lifestyle factors that are influencing them, rather than conglomerate them into one massive illness thats going to kill you.
