Are there any games or exercises that will make my brain less lazy?

I once scored a 148 on an IQ test when I was a young,
But since then, due to depression, self esteem issues, and problems with anxiety my grades have always been low and work have been hard for me to do, I even got a poor score on my SAT.
Is there any way I can jump start my brain to reach back on into the levels of intelligence I had as a kid?

Take up an instrument and learn to play it. At 40 and having played for 20 years now, I would need someone to spoon feed me if not for the guitar. It keeps the neural pathways from atrophying.

Not imbibing alcohol helps as well, but hindsight is 20/20, or so they say.

Living an ordinary life is not easy. Each and everyday, a person goes through bad situations and experience difficulties in different aspects of daily life, be it personal, social, work, or even in light situations such as recreation.  External activities or events taking place everyday can cause a person to feel bad, have problems, and experience high anxiety. feeling scared? awkward? uneasy? restless? or just plain bad? These are caused by encounters from negative reactions acquired by the person or through outside experiences. Fortunately, not all people are subject to high anxiety.

In recent studies, it has been determined that medically sound manipulations of the brain organ called "Amygdala" somehow showed some influence or control over anxiety levels. The amygdala are almond-shaped neurons located inside the medial temporal lobes. This brain organ is active in important human cognitive and emotional functions such as emotional learning, memory modulation, and other neuro-psychological activities.  

High anxiety can affect anybody anywhere, anytime but there are some people who are more predisposed to this psychological and emotional distress. For example, in NBA today, Commissioner David Stern was questioned and had a conference regarding a certain NBA referee named Tim Donaghy who supposedly was betting on NBA games.  Claims have been made regarding the alleged involvement of Stern and Donaghy in game-fixing. During the said conference, in front of dozens of reporters, Stern tried hard to maintain proper composure while answering questions fielded by the media.  Surely, he was trying to mask the anxiety he felt.  It is also most likely that a majority of the basketball referees were feeling fear and anxiety about what might happen should the game-fixing controversy escalates.

In that situation, it can be show that these two emotions can occur at the same time or in conjunction when a person is faced with a very serious situation or problem.  There are moments when the problem or tension gets so high that a person experiencing fear and anxiety may resort to acts of hostility or hysteria.

In reading all this, one has to ask, "Is there any way to avoid fear and anxiety?"

Well, it depends on the person. By not being bothered by the outside opinion, by being strong and true to oneself, knowing that you can stand on your own, that the person can avoid fear and anxiety.   Perhaps, self-confidence is the key to maintain peace of mind and a sense of control over one's life.  

Being calm and collected helps a person to approach a problem or difficult situation with psychological and emotional stability. That way, undertaking a difficult task or facing a problem becomes a challenge, and not a paralyzing burden.

However, it is important to note that there are situations that call for more responses other that having a self-confidence boost.  People with psychological disorders or serious emotional problems may need the help of doctors and other health professionals so that they can deal with stressful situations and other matters that bother them.  Medications may be prescribed to control the symptoms of their severe emotional distress.  Anti-stress medication, together with counseling and therapy, can do miracles for people who have long suffered from fears and worries that prevent them from living a good, satisfying life.

Would this really be that bad?

So, I play ice hockey in the winter, and now roller in the summer. And we all carpool out to the rink, since it's like an hour away. And someone always brings beer for after the game. I am so tempted to have a beer with the crew. But I take a lot of meds, that all say, don't take with alcohol. I take an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, two bipolar meds, and Ativan as need.

Would it really be that bad if I had a beer with them? Like, what might happen if I do have a beer, combined with these medicines? Thanks in advance.
You guys are saying that I might get really sick. But how so? Like throwin up, or just really groggy, or what?

I don't think one beer would do much. as long as youre not drinking 20 shots of vodka you should be fine. Just don't drink too much

Studying for your Cisco CCNA Exam

To pass the CCNA exam, you've got to create a study plan. Part of that plan is scheduling your study time, and making that study time count.

You've scheduled your exam you've created a document to track your study time you've planned exactly when you're going to study. Now the plan must be carried out, without exception.

What exceptions do I mean? Cell phones. Televisions. IPods. Significant others. The list can go on and on.

It's one thing to have a plan, and an important thing now you've got to make sure you carry it out to its fullest potential. That's easy to say until you're studying and a friend calls, or you remember that TV show you wanted to watch is on tonight, or you start surfing the Web for Cisco information and end up playing a game.

You MUST make these small sacrifices in order to achieve your main goal, the CCNA. Any worthwhile accomplishment requires some small sacrifice.

TV will be there when you're done studying. Your significant other will be there when you're done studying. And believe it or not, people once existed without cell phones! Turn the phone off. Turn your instant messenger service off. Turn your text pager off. Despite what we think, the world can do without communicating with us for 90 minutes. Remember, it's better to have 90 minutes of great study than 180 minutes of constantly interrupted study. Studies show that while a single phone call causes an 11-minute interruption on average, it takes well over 20 minutes to get back to what you were doing with the proper mental focus. This is true at the office and at your home!

How To Spend Your Study Time CCNA candidates generally spend their time split between book study, practice exams, and lab time on real Cisco equipment. The best study is done by a combination of these, not by overly relying on one. Let's take a look at each method.

Book study - I've never understood why some people (usually the trolls we were talking about earlier) talk about book study like it's a bad thing. "You can't learn about technology from books." What a load of manure. You have to learn the theory before you can understand how a router or switch operates. The best way to learn the theory is to read a good book.

At the CCNA level, you doubtless know that you have dozens of choices when it comes to books. Some of the better-known books really do gloss over some important topics, such as binary math and subnetting. Make sure to pick a book or books that go beyond just explaining the theory and that give you a lot of explanation of router configs and real-world examples as well.

Practice Exams: Practice exams are good in moderation, but don't use them as your main focus of study. Occasionally, I'm asked for study tips by candidates who have taken the exam a few times and not passed yet. I ask them what they're doing to prepare, and they give a list of companies they bought practice exams from. (You see a lot of this on Internet forums as well.)

Don't fall into this trap. Practice exams are fine if used as a readiness check, but some candidates just take them over and over again, which renders them basically useless.

On top of that, some of them cost hundreds of dollars. That's money you'd be much better off spending on Cisco equipment to practice on.

Again, I'm not against practice exams as a supplement to your studies. Just don't make them the main focus of your study. Taking practice exams over and over and hoping the exam will be just like the practice exam is a recipe for disaster. As I tell my students, when you're in front of a rack of routers and switches during a job interview (or at 2AM when you've been called in to fix a problem), the correct answer is not "D". You've got to know what to do.

And how do you learn these skills? Funny you should ask.... Lab Time On Real Cisco Equipment. Again, speaking from experience: This is the most important part of getting your CCNA, succeeding on the job, and going on to get your CCNP.

Getting hands-on experience is critical to developing your networking skills, especially your troubleshooting skills. Although simulators are better than they used to be, they're still not Cisco routers, and they never will be.

You do your best learning not only when you're configuring your routers, but when you screw something up.

That's so important, I want to repeat it - loudly: You do your best learning when you screw something up. Why? Because then you have to fix it that's how you develop your troubleshooting skills. You can read about all the debug and show commands in the world, but you don't really understand how they work until you're figuring out why your Frame Relay connection isn't working, or your RIP configuration isn't working.

This is true at every level of the Cisco Learning Pyramid. I can show you the show ip protocols output or what you get when you run debug ip rip, and you might remember it for a little while. But when you use it to troubleshoot a lab configuration, you WILL remember it.

Putting your own practice lab together will also help get you over what I call "simulator question anxiety". If you spend any time on CCNA Internet forums, you'll see discussion after discussion about these exam questions. To a certain point, this discussion is justified. The simulator questions carry more weight on your exam than any other question while you can earn partial credit on them, you've got to get them right or you will most likely fail the exam.

There's no reason to be anxious about them if you're prepared. You don't want to be the person who walks into the testing room that's scared to have to create a VLAN or an access list you want to be the person who walks into the testing room confident of their ability to perform any CCNA task. The best way to be that confident is to know you've done it - on real Cisco equipment.

There are several vendors that sell routers and switches on ebay most of them sell CCNA and CCNP kits that include all the cables and transceivers that you'll need as well. (And how is a simulator going to help you learn about cables and transceivers?) Keep in mind that you can always sell the equipment after you're done with the CCNA, or you can add a little equipment to it to go after your CCNP.

Whichever of these methods you use (and I hope you'll use all of them), make sure to keep them in balance with each other. Don't depend too much on just one.

On the topic of learning how to troubleshoot... as you run labs on your Cisco equipment, you'll run into questions or problems that you don't know the answer to yet. Get used to using Google (or your favorite search engine) to find the answer to these problems - but try to figure it our yourself first!

There's nothing wrong with asking questions of someone else if you're not able to find the answer yourself. Trying to find the answer yourself is another important troubleshooting skill you need to start developing today. Don't be one of these people who posts a simple question on a forum without trying to find the answer on your own. Besides, you get more satisfaction and build more confidence when you determine the answer yourself.

feeling depressed...?

I can't stop myself from feeling depressed lately. Everyday goes by with anxiety and stress bombarding through and sometimes I just wish my life ended. The main reason for all of this is is my school, I did everything i can to be top student in class but my bad luck seemed to play a game on me and because of that my grades werent good at all. My teachers are concerned and don't understand. I talk to my councillor and friends too but the feeling just doesnt go away! I am constantly worrying and i hate this feeling!!!! I feel dumb, helpless and worthless. I can't do math, my science always turns out horrible even when i stay up really late studying for it and biology is too hard for me! My teachers won't get it! I talk to them about it but all they do is consider me a tutor, which I have but STILL isn't working!! I feel really stupid, and all my friends including my family, is expecting alot from me. I can't cope with the pressure anymore,

i think we have gifts in one filed or another. few of us if any have gifts in all fields

I see these bumper stickers on cars that says their kid is a straight A student and i see how false that is. Almost no one is excellent at everything

sorry, but we all have strengths AND weaknesses.

Parenting 101: How Can Traditional Games Benefit Your Child?

For the past few years, I’ve talked to parents complaining about their kids and their online or computer habits.

“They spend too much time playing online games. No time for homework,” reports a single mom.

“When my child loses a game, he yells at me,” adds a frustrated mother.

“My son forgets to eat meals. He’s so immersed with it that he completely ignores me,” says another.

I feel bad for them but it’s true. Our children are simply bombarded with tons of new online stuffs. I’m not against online games. At least, they have some role in engaging our kids. But most of these online games are designed to entertain and so after a while, some kids get bored. And if done in excess, some even become grouchy.

Meanwhile, traditional games are overlooked if not ignored. When I say traditional games, I’m not just referring to old, classic games. I consider most board, word, or card games as traditional games because they don’t use computer or “hi-tech” gadgets.

Unlike traditional games, today’s online games don’t involve social interaction. If permitted, kids can stay with the computer all day long. Instead of spending time with their parents, siblings, or friends, they spend time with a cold, lifeless machine. And this is where the problem comes in — the lack of connection with a human soul.

How can traditional games help kids?

First, traditional games can help kids learn to acknowledge their emotions, although indirectly. During play, kids learn to deal with frustration after a loss, with excitement after a win, with anger after getting a “bad turn,” with anxiety when pride is on the line.

By playing traditional games, kids also learn how to communicate politely with other players. They show empathy to players who loses, become assertive with those who bend the rules, and control their temper when others become rowdy.

I strongly believe in the educational value of traditional games. Hence about three years ago, I developed a board game — now known as Oikos Game —designed not only to entertain and to create fun but also to provide an educational experience for parents and kids. Learning through play is one of the ways to teach life lessons to kids.

Second, traditional games provide a venue for families to spend time together, to generate lively banter, and to communicate with one another —done in the spirit of fun. The time spent each day to play with kids is a time well-spent. At the end of the day, what kids remember are the happy times spent with their parents and siblings. It won’t matter to them who wins or loses.

They will cherish those moments of togetherness and treasure those periods of laughter. The closeness and warmth among family members will forever be celebrated.

Kids love to connect with their parents. They need to feel secure, to be affirmed, to be listened to. They want frequent hugs, comforting words, and even high fives. If given a choice, most kids will prefer a warm, genuine touch and a caring, healing voice over an online game.

So a daily thirty-minute playtime with kids is an occasion to help families thrive.

Third, traditional games stimulate the brain through logical thinking and strategy. Studies have shown that to keep our brain healthy, we need to frequently stimulate it. Through reading, learning new things, playing word or board games, solving puzzles, or doing physical activities, our brain stays fit.

Like many specialists, I’ve recommended brain-stimulating activities to individuals who suffer from dementia. In my experience, those who often play card or word games and solve puzzles get worse slower than those who don’t. Indeed, our brain also needs “mental aerobics” to keep it sharp and healthy.

In summary, traditional games allow families to have quality time together while improving relationships, creating laughter, keeping the brain healthy, and strengthening the bond that glue the family’s fabric.

laid off....graduated high school...and girlfriend is away. i found this coffee shop...but i don't know what to do next. the only thing im good at is playing video games. i also exercise, but im in a funk and i can't seem to be as energetic as i used to be btw.....im only 20
should i just join in on random conversations...or will that be just too weird?

What Self-Help Treatments Are Helpful For Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are mental illnesses that involve overwhelming fear or persistent anxiety that interferes with daily life. They include panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress disorder.

Anxiety disorders are very common (e.g. about 10% of people will have one in any year). Recommended treatments for anxiety disorders include medication (e.g. selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and psychological treatment (e.g. cognitive behavior therapy). Although these treatments are effective, studies show that many people do not seek treatment from health professionals. However, many people self-treat their anxiety symptoms with complementary and alternative therapies that often don't involve a professional.

This article will give an overview of what self-help treatments are effective for anxiety disorders as shown by scientific research. Although anecdotal evidence or personal testimonials are intuitively convincing, this type of evidence is not a good guide to a treatment's effectiveness. This is because other factors may have caused the improvement, such as the passage of time, other outside events, or other treatments the person was using. Improvement or changes should also be measured accurately and systematically. Evidence is much more convincing from scientific studies that compare a treatment with some sort of control (e.g. a placebo), have many participants, randomly assign participants to the treatments, and keep participants unaware of whether they are using the treatment or the placebo. These studies are called randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Only these types of studies were examined in this review of what self-help treatments work for anxiety. (ref) Keep in mind that these studies are expensive to conduct, so there are fewer studies of self-help treatments than for standard treatments.

Kava is a herb from the South Pacific. Products containing kava are banned in many countries due to concerns over damage to the liver. Several studies indicate that kava may be effective for anxiety disorders, but not all studies agree.

Withania somnifera

Withania somnifera is a plant used in India for centuries. One study found it was better than placebo for anxiety disorders, but more studies are needed to be sure.

Yoga

Hi, I was wondering if I should take Kava for my anxiety problem and social phobia. But I don't know about kava very well like can you take it forever or do you have to stop at a specific time and cycle it again? If so how many dose do you take? And what is the side effect of it? Your answer sures mean alot. Thanks.

Not unless you discuss it with your doctor. I have tried Kava and found it had a very mild sedating effect, but did not relieve the depression and anxiety to any great extent or for any period of time. It can effect certain other medications that people commonly take and certain medications used during surgery and recovery.

How should I take these natural treatments?

For anxiety I have: kava, theanine, lemon balm, and valerian. For depression: St. John’s Wart. I also have Nootropil - a “smart pill”.
•For anxiety, can I suddenly stop taking one treatment and start taking another right away?
•I can take one treatment for anxiety, St. John’s wort for depression, and the “smart pill” at the same time, correct?
•I cannot take all of the above mentioned anti-anxiety medicines at the same time, correct?

I wouldn't take all this stuff even in the same day. I've taken all the herbs you've mentioned but haven't used any of the drugs. I'm even very careful with the herbs.

My suggestion would be to meet with a well qualified herbologist who is also knowledgable about western medicine, specifically the smart pills and anti anxiety meds - this person might be hard to find.

When two drugs, or even herbs - especially those like kava and valerian, are taken together they have the effect of each drug then an additional synergistic effect of the combination. You could be treading on very dangerous ground by combining all these meds and herbs.

If you are taking all this stuff you may want to consider trying to wean yourself of all of it (with medical advice most likely) and experience "real" reality. It might not be as bad as you think.

Side effects of the standardized preparalions were rare and mild in the controlled trials. There were isolated reports of stomach complaints, restlessness, drowsiness, tremar, and headache. Gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, dizziness, and allergic skin reactions have been reported in 2.3% of patients in open trials.
Dosage

The usual prescribed dose of kava is 140 to 250 mg daily of the kava pyrone constituents, in 2 to 3 divided doses. In European studies, the most common dose was 70 mg t.i.d. (210 mg daily), but ranged from 60 to 210 mg daily . In U.S. brands kava pyrone content usually varies between 30% and 55%. Kava extracts are commonly available in capsules, tablets, and liquid forms.
Drug Interactions

There is limited data on drug interactions with kava. Severe disorientation has been reported in a patient using a U.S. kava product in conjunction with alprazolam, cimetidine, and terazosin; whether his symptoms were actually due to a drug

Build Your Own Self hypnosis Kit

For many years, people have used self hypnosis to treat anxiety, ease phobias, and cure themselves of destructive habits. Self hypnosis kits are available on the market, but self hypnosis is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all proposition. For example, a woman who has been molested or raped may have a lot of trouble relaxing and entering a trance state when guided by a male voice. Similarly, a man getting out of an abusive relationship with his wife may not find a female voice particularly soothing. And suppose the kit you buy addresses smoking cessation when what you really want to do is lose weight?

So why not create your own self-hypnosis kit? Your self hypnosis kit should contain several items.

Progressive Relaxation Tape or CD

The first thing your self hypnosis kit needs is a progressive relaxation tape or CD.

Progressive relaxation starts with your toes and leads you to relax each major muscle group. Once you are completely relaxed, the trance can be deepened by suggestions of sleepiness, "sinking" into a deeper trance, etc.

There are literally dozens of CDs that offer progressive relaxation. Some have male readers, others female. Some include music, others include white noise, others no sound but the voice of the reader. If possible, try a few of these CDs to find out which works best for you.

You may also want to record the CD yourself, or have a friend do so, if a familiar voice is more comforting to you.

List of Affirmations or Images

Before you start your hypnosis, have a clear idea of what you want to get out of the session. If deep relaxation is all, that's fine, but many people focus on things that they want to change while they're in a trance state.

Write down what you're going to say to yourself and the images you plan to use and keep them with your self hypnosis kit. Keep your messages positive. For instance, don't say, "I'm not going to be fat anymore." Instead say, "I see myself thin and beautiful," or, if you can bypass words, just picture yourself thin and beautiful.

Blankets, Candles, Etc.

Whenever you practice self-hypnosis, try to use the same environment--the same room, the same blanket over your lap, the same scented candles or incense, etc. As you continue to self hypnotize, you will find yourself reaching a trance more and more easily. Eventually, you may not need the relaxation tape at all--just being in the familiar atmosphere will ease you into a trance.

Once your self hypnosis kit is complete, all you need to do is set aside thirty minutes or so a day to practice reaching a trance state and using your affirmations. In no time at all, you'll be reaping the benefits of deeper relaxation and enhanced self esteem.

THC detox and taking my xanx?

Ok I have been off the weed for a week now after smoking for 10 years off and on. I just got the Rescue detox kit it’s a 5 day permanent clean. I am taking it to rid my self of the THC that has built up over the years. Drug test my be coming up for new job. You should not take it just to be safe. If you really can't handle the withdrawals go ahead and take it but you should really try to get past that if you don't need the pills anymore. You're only making yourself more and more addicted to them by continuing to take them.
